The invasion of North American forests by exotic earthworms is producing profound ecosystem changes, such as alterations in soil nutrient cycling, and redistribution and loss of soil organic matter. However, the present and future extent of these invasions is difficult to evaluate without a better understanding of the factors that control the distribution and abundance of earthworms in previously non-invaded habitats. In this study, the species composition and short-term dynamics of three exotic earthworm invasion fronts were studied at a northern hardwood forest in south-central New York State (USA). Belt transects were established at each of the three locations to sample from earthworm-invaded areas through transition zones and into invasion front areas. Lumbricus rubellus, L. terrestrisandOctolasion tyrtaeum were the most common species, but their distribution was not homogeneous along the transects. Whereas, L. rubellus was the only species with relatively high adult densities at transition zones and invasion fronts, L. terrestris and O. tyrtaeum occurred mostly in the heavily earthworm-invaded areas and were rare at the invasion fronts. The density of earthworms along the transects decreased by 60–87 from June 2001 to October 2002 and then recovered in 2003 to values similar to those of 2001. This decrease was apparently caused by reduced recruitment of immature earthworms, probably related to the severe drought periods that the study area experienced in 2001 and 2002. Our data suggest that climate and topography, through their effects on soil moisture patterns, can be critical factors controlling the distribution and spread of exotic earthworms in previously non-invaded habitats.

Dispersal of the nematode Steinernema carpocapsae (All strain), applied on the top or the bottom of soil columns, was tested in the presence or absence of two earthworm species, Lumbricus terrestris or Aporrectodea trapezoides. Nematode dispersal was estimated after a 2-week period with a bioassay against the greater wax moth, Galleria mellonella. Vertical dispersal of nematodes was increased in the presence of earthworms. When nematodes were placed on the surface of soil columns, significantly more nematodes dispersed to the lower half of the columns when either earthworm species was present than when earthworms were not present. When nematodes were placed on the bottom of soil columns, significantly more nematodes dispersed to the upper half of the columns when L. terrestris was present than when A. trapezoides was present or in the absence of earthworms. Because nematodes were found on the exterior and in the interior of earthworms, nematode dispersal may be enhanced by direct contact with the earthworms.

In northern North America, invasive earthworms (including the nightcrawler Lumbricus terrestris) have been dispersing from points of introduction and dramatically affecting soil structure, soil food webs, and forest floor dynamics. However, little is known about the factors influencing the local distribution of invasive earthworms south of the Wisconsinan glaciation. Earthworms were sampled at suspected sites of introduction near Mountain Lake Biological Field Station, Virginia, USA. The density of invasive earthworms decreased as distance from suspected sites of introduction increased; native earthworms displayed the opposite relationship. However, the distance that L. terrestris was found into the forest was less than expected given dispersal rates calculated from more northern invasions. We also found correlations among population densities of L. terrestris and physical–chemical properties of the soil, and differences between field and forest soils in terms of temperature, moisture, and soil chemical properties. We conducted two experiments to analyze some factors possibly responsible for the observed distribution: (1) temperature and moisture, and (2) soil type (field vs. forest) and food resources. Our results suggest that L. terrestris may not disperse as far into forested habitats of the Southern Appalachians compared to northern forests due to local physical‐chemical soil characteristics.

A greenhouse mesocosm experiment, representing earthworm-free North American Acer-dominated forest floor and soil conditions, was used to examine the individual and combined effects of initial invasion by three European earthworm species (Dendrobaena octaedra, Lumbricus rubellus and Lumbricus terrestris) on the forest floor and upper soil horizons, N and P availability, and the mortality and biomass of four native understory plant species (Acer saccharum, Aquilegia canadensis, Aralia racemosa, and Carex pensylvanica). All the three earthworm species combined caused larger impacts on most variables measured than any single earthworm species. These included loss of O horizon mass, decreased thickness of the O horizon and increased thickness of the A horizon, and higher availability of N and P. The latter finding differs from field reports where nutrients were less available after invasion, and probably represents an initial transient increase in nutrient supply as earthworms consume and incorporate the O horizon into the A horizon. Earthworms also increased mortality of plants and decreased total mesocosm plant biomass, but here the impact of all the three earthworm species was no greater than that of L. terrestris and/or L. rubellus alone. This study corroborates field studies that European earthworm invasions alter North American forest ecosystem processes by initiating a cascade of impacts on plant community composition and soil properties.

The taxonomic structure of yeast communities was studied in forest litter and soil, as well as in substrates transformed by the activity of Lumbricus terrestris earthworms (leaves in heaps, the gut contents, and coproliths). The activity of L. terrestris has a weak effect on the total yeast abundance but results in substantial changes in the community taxonomic composition. The share of ascomycetous yeasts is significantly higher in the substrates associated with the activity of earthworms. The teleomorphic ascomycetes Williopsis saturnus were isolated from the gut contents. The effect of earthworms on the composition of the yeast community in the process of forest litter destruction is more pronounced than seasonal changes.

Th effect of fenvalerate 20% EC (a synthetic pyrethroid) on the growth of two ectomycorrhizal fungi, Thelephora terrestris and Laccaria laccata, was studied in vitro. In the case of T. terrestris, mycelial growth was promoted at lower concentrations of the insecticide but inhibited at higher concentrations; mycelial growth of L. laccata decreased with increase in concentration. The effect of the insecticide at three concentrations (0.25, 0.5, 1.5 ppm) was also studied on ectomycorrhizal formation in 4-month-old seedlings of Pinus patula in nursery trials. At lower concentrations the insecticide had no significant effect on mycorrhizal formation.

Previous studies indicated that dispersal of S. carpocapsae may be enhanced in soil with earthworms. The objective of this research was to determine and compare the effects of earthworms on dispersal of other Steinernema spp. Vertical dispersal of Steinernema carpocapsae, S. feltiae, and S. glaseri was tested in soil columns in the presence and absence of earthworms (Lumbricus terrestris). Dispersal was evaluated by a bioassay and by direct extraction of nematodes from soil. Upward dispersal of S. carpocapsae and S. feltiae increased in the presence of earthworms, whereas upward dispersal of S. glaseri was not affected by earthworms. No significant differences were detected in downward dispersal of S. carpocapsae and S. feltiae in soil with earthworms compared to soil without earthworms. Downward dispersal of S. glaseri, however, was greater in soil without earthworms relative to soil with earthworms. In soil void of earthworms, dispersal of S. glaseri was greatest followed by dispersal of S. carpocapsae. The presence of earthworm burrows in soil did not influence nematode dispersal. Nematodes were recovered from the surface, interior, and casts of earthworms. Therefore, nematodes may have a phoretic association with earthworms.

Earthworms are known to generally increase plant growth. However, because plant-earthworm interactions are potentially mediated by soil characteristics the response of plants to earthworms should depend on the soil type. In a greenhouse microcosm experiment, the responsiveness of plants (Veronica persica, Trifolium dubium and Poa annua) to two earthworm species (in combination or not) belonging to different functional groups (Aporrectodea. caliginosa an endogeic species, Lumbricus terrestris an anecic species) was measured in term of biomass accumulation. This responsiveness was compared in two soils (nutrient rich and nutrient poor) and two mineral fertilization treatments (with and without). The main significant effects on plant growth were due to the anecic earthworm species. L. terrestris increased the shoot biomass and the total biomass of T. dubium only in the rich soil. It increased also the total biomass of P. annua without mineral fertilization but had the opposite effect with fertilization. Mineral fertilization, in the presence of L. terrestris, also reduced the total biomass of V. persica. L. terrestris did not only affect plant growth. In P. annua and V. persica A. caliginosa and L. terrestris also affected the shoot/root ratio and this effect depended on soil type. Finally, few significant interactions were found between the anecic and the endogeic earthworms and these interactions did not depend on the soil type. A general idea would be that earthworms mostly increase plant growth through the enhancement of mineralization and that earthworm effects should decrease in nutrient-rich soils or with mineral fertilization. However, our results show that this view does not hold and that other mechanisms are influential.

The anthropogenic spread of exotic ecosystem engineers profoundly impacts native ecosystems. Exotic earthworms were shown to alter plant community composition of the understory of deciduous forests previously devoid of earthworms. We investigated the effect of two exotic earthworm species (Lumbricus terrestris L. and Octolasion tyrtaeum Savigny) belonging to different ecological groups (anecic and endogeic) on the emergence of plants from the seed bank of a northern North American deciduous forest using the seedling emergence method. We hypothesized that (1) exotic earthworms change the seedling emergence from the plant seed bank, (2) L. terrestris increases the emergence of plant seedlings of the deeper soil layer but decreases that of the upper soil layer due to plant seed burial, and (3) O. tyrtaeum decreases plant seedling emergence due the damage of plant seeds. Indeed, exotic earthworms altered the emergence of plant seedlings from the seed bank and the functional composition of the established plant seedlings. Surprisingly, although L. terrestris only marginally affected seedling emergence, O. tyrtaeum changed the emergence of native plant species from the seed bank considerably. In particular, the number of emerging grass and herb seedlings were increased in the presence of O. tyrtaeum in both soil layers. Moreover, the impacts of earthworms depended on the identity of plant functional groups; herb species benefited, whereas legumes suffered from the presence of exotic earthworms. The results highlight the strong effect of invasive belowground ecosystem engineers on aboveground ecosystem characteristics and suggest fundamental changes of ecosystems by human-spread earthworm species.

Our interest in detecting genotoxic exposure in earthworms led us to isolate high quality DNA from theEisenia fetida species. For that, we compared a modification of the conventional phenol-chloroform extraction procedure, usually refered to as the Maniatis procedure, to two commercially available kits reportedly eliminating multiple partitions in phenol and chloroform, namely the Qiagen and Nucleon protocols. From the 260 nm optical density values, the commercial kits extracts hinted toward higher DNA recovery with those procedures. However, the 260/280 nm ratios indicated that the quality of the DNA isolated with the modified Maniatis procedure was purer than that isolated with the commercial kits, the latter being most probably contaminated by proteins and/or RNA. The Maniatis procedure was slightly modified by the introduction of a potassium acetate step for protein precipitation and by shortening the proteinase K treatment from 12–18 h to only 2 h. The higher quality of the DNA isolated by phenol-chloroform extraction was confirmed by quantification with the fluorescent 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid assay. Preliminary results suggest that the modified Maniatis procedure herein described is not only applicable for DNA adducts studies using32P-postlabelling techniques but is also suitable for DNA extraction from other earthworm species such asLumbricus terrestris.

Pinus pinaster seedlings were grown in a sandy dune soil either inoculated withHebeloma cylindrosporum or let to natural colonisation. Six months later, half of the seedlings of both treatments were subjected to a 3-week moderate drought. Root colonisation analysis showed that root tips were colonised to almost 100% independent of the inoculation. DNA determination of the ectomycorrhizal morphotypes showed that inoculated seedlings were extensively mycorrhized byH. cylindrosporum (more than 75%) whereas non-inoculated seedlings were mycorrhized by the exotic speciesThelephora terrestris (50%) andLaccaria bicolor (30%) and to a lesser extent byH. cylindrosporum (20%). Drought did not affect these frequencies. Total plant biomass was not affected by the mycorrhizal status or by drought but the root/shoot biomass ratio as well as the root/leaf surface area ratio were much lower in seedlings extensively colonised byH. cylindrosporum. Root hydraulic conductivity was higher in plants mainly mycorrhized byH. cylindrosporum, showing that this fungus improved the water uptake capacity of the root system as compared toT. terrestris and/orL. bicolor. This positive effect was also found under drought but to a lesser extent.H. cylindrosporum also increased the amount of root-adhering soil as compared to the other fungal symbionts, illustrating the performance of this association in aggregating sandy soil particles and developing the rhizosheath. The origin of the reduced root hydraulic resistance byH. cylindrosporum mycorrhization is discussed for the whole path including soil, soil-root interface and root cortex.

Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh. seedlings inoculated with Pisolithus tinctorius (Pers.) Coker & Couch and Thelephora terrestris Ehrl. per Fr. were grown in well watered soil (s –0.03 MPa) or subjected to a long-term soil water stress of up to –1.0 MPa over 13-week period in a glasshouse. After 13 weeks, all seedling containers were watered to field capacity and then water was withheld from the E. camaldulensis seedlings to induce a short-term drought. Diurnal measurements of seedling photosynthesis rate (A), leaf stomatal conductance (g) and leaf water potential (p) were completed before, during, and after the short term drought. Although they were growing in an equal soil volume, photosynthesis rate (A), leaf stomatal conductance and leaf water potential (p) of larger seedlings with P. tinctorius ectomycorrhizae were similar to those of smaller seedlings colonized with T. terrestris during the short-term drought period. Seedlings inoculated with Pisolithus tinctorius maintained higher photosynthesis rates over the course of the short-term drought. Thus, P. tinctorius ectomycorrhizae appear to be more efficient than those of T. terrestris in assisting seedlings to maintain gas exchange and photosynthesis under limited soil moisture conditions.

Exotic European earthworms have expanded into worm-free forests of the United States. Concurrently, populations of the white-tailed deer, Odocoileus virginianus, have also increased. During winter, deer use hemlock stands for cover while browsing elsewhere, creating a net organic matter flux into these stands. Deer fecal pellets can provide annual inputs of 48.1 kg C, 1.4 kg N, and 1.3 kg Ca per hectare. We tested the hypothesis that these pellets were readily consumed by invading earthworms. The litter-feeding anecic earthworm Lumbricus terrestris redistributed fecal pellets and accelerated mass and nutrient loss rates. These losses are likely due to the combination of enhanced fragmentation and decomposition as earthworms drag pellets into their burrows for consumption. This nutrient subsidy may be an important source of high quality “litter” input to hemlock stands, which may in turn facilitate the invasion of these stands by earthworms under high deer densities.

Summary Plants ofPicea abies (L.) Karst were grown in mycorrhizal association withTelephora terrestris (Pers. ex Fr.) andPisolithus tinctorius (Mich. ex Pers.) Coker and Couch on sphagnum peat in petri dishes or Perspex chambers. After 1 yearT. terrestris had formed prominent rhizomorphs which were characterized by light microscopy and investigated for32P-orthophosphate uptake. The absorbed phosphate was transported to sinks throughout the rhizomorphal system as well as into the plant. The calculated translocation velocity and flux rate in the rhizomorph were in the range of 1–3 cm/h and 0.5–4.0 × 10-10 mol cm-2 s-1, respectively. Label was observed to accumulate in the needles 2–3 days after application. Feeding a non-mycorrhized root with32P-orthophosphate led to an accumulation of label in needles within 1 h, but no radioactivity appeared in the associatedT. terrestris rhizomorphs. The rhizomorphs ofP. tinctorius revealed a higher structural differentiation than those ofT. terrestris. Translocation of labelled phosphorus through rhizomorphs ofP. tinctorius into spruce needles was also demonstrated.

Ferns are good ecological indicators of arsenic accumulation in contaminated abandoned mines. The rhizomes of ferns were analyzed for arsenic and other heavy metals using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. In addition, we examined the ribulose-bisphosphate carboxylase (rbcL) gene isolated from the indigenous species of ferns at the pithead, tailings and soil sites in the vicinity of the Myoungbong abandoned mine, Republic of Korea. A search of the GenBank database revealed that the predicted amino acid sequence of this gene was homologous with 99% of Pteridium aquilinum As-2 (EU476184), 99% of Deparia petersenii As-6 (EU476188), 97% of Deparia lobatocrenata As-8 (EU476190), and 98% of Deparia conilii As-7 (EU476189). High concentrations of heavy metals (arsenic, 17.6 mg/kg in rhizomes and 2690 mg/kg in soil; copper, 17.1 mg/kg in rhizomes and 40.7 mg/kg in soil; cadmium, 2.9 mg/kg in rhizomes and 12.2 mg/kg in soil; lead, 41.9 mg/kg in rhizomes and 135 mg/kg in soil; zinc, 27.0 mg/kg in rhizomes and 172 mg/kg in soil) were found in P. aquilinum As-2 (EU476184) from the Myoungbong mine area, which may play an important role as ecological indicators of the contaminated areas.

Glyphosate N-(phosphonomethyl) glycine is a widely-used herbicide in agriculture. The anecic earthworm, Lumbricus terrestris feeds and forages for surface plant materials meaning that this species has a unique and direct exposure to agrichemicals. At the recommended product rates, significantly (F1,44 = 8.67, p = .005) higher numbers of L. terrestris middens were found in the glyphosate treated areas of an arable crop field. Laboratory feeding assays using field aged plant materials indicated that previous glyphosate treatment was a statistically significant factor affecting earthworm L. terrestris biomass (F1,12 = 5.75, p = .03). Negligible glyphosate residues were detectable, and the field aged plant materials were encrusted with fungal hyphae. This suggests that glyphosate influences the colonisation of plant material by a litter-fungus complex which improves the food quality to earthworms. Concentrations of epoxiconazole, a fungicide, were detected in some plant materials and may influence overall food quality to earthworms. Glyphosate treatment on fresh volunteer plant leaves (unwanted crop seedlings) was not a statistically significant factor affecting earthworm L. terrestris biomass (F1,6 = 0.16, p = .92). These results indicate fungal communities influence feeding behaviours, and plant materials are a direct source of agrichemicals to anecic earthworms.

In order to test the feasibility of using native halophytes to reclaim brinecontaminated soil, seedlings of five inland halophytes, Atriplexprostrata, Hordeum jubatum, Salicornia europaea, Spergularia marina, and Suaeda calceoliformis, were planted at threedensities on a site near Athens, Ohio which had been contaminated by oilwell brine water. Ten replicates of each density treatment weretransplanted on two distinct areas of high and low salinity in May of 1993. Seedling survivorship, soil moisture, and soil salinity were monitored weeklythroughout the growing season. Biomass production and ion uptake weredetermined for each plant surviving until harvest. Soil analyses wereperformed prior to planting and after harvest to determine overall changesin soil chemistry and to determine the amount of Na+ reductionfrom the soil due to leaching by precipitation during the course of theexperiment. Survival was determined to be density independent for all ofthe species with the exception of S. marina where survival wasfacilitated at high density. Increased salinity negatively affected the survivaland yield of A. prostrata. The remaining species had greater survivalunder high salinity conditions, and density appeared to be the key factorinfluencing yield. Sodium and chloride ions were accumulated in planttissues in much greater amounts than K+, Ca+2or Mg+2. Salicornia europaea plants grown in high densityon the high salinity site accumulated the highest amount of Na+ andH. jubatum grown in low density on the high salinity site accumulatedthe lowest amount of Na+. Soil salinities measured directly from theroot zone were significantly reduced (p<0.05) at the end of thegrowing season when compared to their controls. Atriplex prostrata(high density/low salinity) plots produced the greatest reduction in soilsalinity (15.8%) and S. marina (high density/high salinity) plots hadthe least reduction (1.2%).

The goal of this study is to determine whether a parasitic nematode may regulate, or destabilise by inducing demographic cycles, its host populations. We explore three host–parasite systems through population dynamic models. The hosts considered are the fossorial water vole, Arvicola terrestris, the common vole Microtus arvalis and the bank vole Myodes (Clethrionomys) glareolus and the parasitic nematode is Trichuris arvicolae. Three differential equation-based mathematical models are developed including host immunity and the existence of trade-off between immunity and host survival. Using parameters estimated from field data and laboratory observations, all these models show that T. arvicolae can induce host population regulation but not demographic cycles. The regulation effect of the nematode is un-ambiguous for the water vole (reduction of 50.2% of the host population size), but less obvious for the common vole (5.9%) and even less for the bank vole (1.4%). Important biological parameters to be taken into account in such models are discussed. Experimental confirmation of the regulatory potential of the nematode and of the costs of mounting an immune response against this nematode are now required. Communicated by W. Lutz
