The dependence of salinity stratification on the vertical structure of the longitudinal salinity gradient is investigated by solving the equations of longitudinal momentum and salt conservation. The results are used to interpret measurements made throughout 31 tidal cycles in the Merbok Estuary, Malaysia, as part of an ecological study of a tropical mangrove estuary. The solutions show that a substantial part of the salinity stratification was caused by vertical shear in the currents coupled with advection of the longitudinal salinity gradient. This mechanism led to maximum stratification around low water and minimum stratification around high water. Observed intratidal variations in stratification at neap tides greatly exceeded modelled values when a depth-independent, longitudinal salinity gradient was assumed. Simulations made using a longitudinal salinity gradient of simple depth-dependent, power-law form implied that this difference arose mainly because the near-surface, longitudinal salinity gradient in the field was significantly larger than that near the bed during neap tides and at times of high run-off. The longitudinal, dispersive transport of salt, fresh water and solutes due to vertical shear is shown to be important during periods of stratification at neap tides and during high run-off. The relevance of stratification to mangrove estuaries is discussed.  相似文献

Colmation refers to the retention processes that can lead to the clogging of the top layer of channel sediments and decolmation refers to the resuspension of deposited fine particles. Internal colmation, clogging of the interstices directly below the armor layer, may form a thin seal that disconnects surface water from hyporheic water by inhibiting exchange processes. The settling of particles under low flow conditions can cause external colmation. Colmated channel sediments are characterized by reduced porosity and hydraulic conductivity as well as by a consolidated texture. The term ‘depth filtration’ refers to the transport and storage of fine matrix sediments in interstitial layers. Depth filtration is of significance for the transport of colloidal and fine particulate inorganic as well as organic matter within the hyporheic interstices and into the alluvial aquifer. The role of depth filtration is assessed for the content (given in mg per liter) of matrix fine particles retained in the coarse framework sediment of a gravel-bed river in Switzerland. Sediment samples were taken by freeze-coring with liquid nitrogen down to 70 cm depth and by piezometers down to 150 cm depth. Seventy-two percent of the mobile matrix fine particles were smaller than 0.1 mm and 50% were smaller than 0.03 mm. The content of fines tended to increase with depth, although higher accumulations were found at intermediate depths in sediments influenced by exfiltrating ground water. Interstitial detrital particles >90 μm showed vertical distribution patterns opposing those of total particles. These relationships revealed a differential significance of import, storage, and transport within three types of hydrological exchange zones (infiltration, horizontal advection, exfiltration) in the cross-section of the stream.  相似文献

为研究干旱区群落根系生物量的空间分布格局及其与土壤中水分、盐分的关系,以宁夏沙湖地区的沙枣-芨芨草群落为研究对象,以立木冠幅的20%为带宽,由立木向空旷地依次划分8个冠幅梯度带(Z1-Z8),采用分层挖掘法对群落中植物根系生物量密度、土壤含水率、土壤溶液电导率的垂直与水平分布特征进行了研究.结果表明:随着离沙枣立木距离的增加,群落中植物根系生物量密度逐渐减小,总根系生物量密度较高层次的埋深渐次增加,各层次土壤含水率及不同土壤层次间土壤含水率的差异性依次变大,表浅层土壤溶液电导率趋势性上升,但在较深层次,位于立木冠层垂直投影区边缘的Z3带的电导率最低,向沙枣立木方向、空旷地方向两侧递增;同时发现,群落中两种主要物种间根系生物量密度较高的土壤层次总体上相互分离,离立木较近各带出现下层土壤含水率低于上层的逆含水率梯度层.总体上,群落中地下生物量、土壤水分、土壤溶液电导率的垂直与水平分布特征揭示,植物根系吸水与土壤水分蒸发是影响土壤剖面中盐分、水分分布与运动的两个主导因子.  相似文献

土壤盐渍化问题是干旱半干旱地区农业发展的主要障碍,也是制约荒漠植物生长状况的关键因素之一,严重影响到绿洲生态环境的稳定与安全。研究土壤剖面盐分的分布情况,能及时探究盐渍化对生态的影响。以渭干河-库车河三角洲绿洲为研究靶区,利用电磁感应仪技术与传统采样方法获取该地区典型地块的土壤电导率,剖析其剖面分布特征,在建立磁感式表观电导率和土壤样本实测电导率之间的线性混合模型的基础上,采用自然邻近插值方法解析和评估研究区土壤剖面盐分的空间分布特征。结果表明:研究区土壤电导率具有较强的表聚性与空间变异强度,土壤主体属于中度盐渍化类型;基于各深度层土壤电导率与磁感表观电导率所构建的3种线性混合模型均能达到0.01的显著性水平,其中磁感表观电导率两种模式相结合解译模型预测精度最高;自然邻近法插值结果直观反映研究区土壤剖面盐分的空间分布状况,与水平模式和垂直模式相结合的土壤盐分解译模型相结合则能够更有效的提高土壤盐分空间分布的预测精度。研究结果表明,借助构建的土壤盐分解译模型可对研究区土壤盐渍化空间分布情况进行快速监测与评估,为该区土壤盐渍化的防治提供了一定的技术支撑。  相似文献

In meromictic lakes such as Lake Shira, horizontal inhomogeneity is small in comparison with vertical gradients. To determine the vertical distribution of temperature, salinity, and density of water in a deep zone of a Lake Shira, or other saline lakes, a one-dimensional (in vertical direction) mathematical model is presented. A special feature of this model is that it takes into account the process of ice formation. The model of ice formation is based on the one-phase Stefan problem with the linear temperature distribution in the solid phase. A convective mixed layer is formed under an ice cover due to salt extraction in the ice formation process. To obtain analytical solutions for the vertical distribution of temperature, salinity, and density of water, we use a scheme of vertical structure in the form of several layers. In spring, the ice melts as top and bottom. These processes are taken into account in the model. The calculated profiles of salinity and temperature of Shira Lake are in good agreement with field measurement data for each season. Additionally, we focussed on the redox zone, which is the zone in which the aerobic layers of a water column meet the anaerobic ones. Hyperactivity of plankton communities is observed in this zone in lakes with hydrogen sulphide monimolimnion, and Lake Shira is among them. The location of the redox zone in the lake, which is estimated from field measurements, coincides with a sharp increase in density (the pycnocline) during autumn and winter. During spring and summer, the redox zone is deeper than the pycnocline. The location of pycnocline calculated with the hydro physical model is in good agreement with field measurement data.  相似文献

Temporal and spatial heterogeneity of resources is likely to have dramatic effects on the behaviors of zooplankton and ichthyoplankton, which in turn are likely to have strong effects on ecological dynamics such as predation, growth, and mating. The objective of this study was to determine whether vertically thin layers of extreme prey concentration affect the vertical distribution of larval Pacific herring (Clupea pallasi). We employed 2-m tall experimental tanks equipped with video cameras that scanned the vertical extent of the tanks to investigate the effects of thin layers on the vertical distribution of 5- and 10-day-old herring larvae. Three treatments were established: (1) a thin layer of prey (rotifers, Brachionus plicatilis) through density (salinity) stratification, (2) homogeneous vertical distribution of both prey and density, and (3) density (salinity) stratification, but with a homogeneous distribution of prey. We found that in all treatments the majority of larval herring were at the surface, near the light, despite the absence of a peak in rotifer abundance at this depth in some instances. However, there were also clear effects of the thin layers—secondary subsurface peaks in herring abundance occurred at the mid-depths in the stratified tanks, in and around the thin layers. In addition, our results provide some evidence that thin layers specifically, rather than prey patches generally, influence the vertical distribution of larval herring, i.e., larvae may use the physical properties of thin layers to locate and distribute themselves, instead of reacting solely to the prey patches. Thus thin layers can affect directly the vertical distribution of larval herring, and perhaps indirectly their horizontal distribution, as herring larvae live in environments (e.g., estuaries) where advective transport is also often vertically heterogeneous.  相似文献

The vertical distribution of the variables relevant to P forms in sediments were studied in a shallow Chinese freshwater lake (Lake Donghu) in 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000, to assess the contribution of enzyme to P availability in sediment cores. Sediment P was fractionationd into iron-bound P, calcium-bound P, acid soluble organic P (ASOP) and hot NaOH extractable residual organic P. The former two species made the largest contribution to the sediment P pool. All P species exhibited significantly higher concentrations in different depths at Station I, compared with those found at Station II, except for ASOP. Coupled with these lower ASOP concentrations, the V max data of alkaline phosphatase, measured on the same samples, were significantly higher at station I. Taken together, ASOP were probably important in supplying the enzymatic substrate (Phosphatase Hydrolyzable Phosphorus, PHP) into interstitial water. Dissolved orthophosphate and PHP concentrations were highly heterogeneous , but peaked in subsurface, paralleled by higher V max and lower K m values of alkaline phosphatase, throughout the sediment core. Sediment in the eutrophic lake is not only enriched in available P (iron-bound P), or stores residual P, but also tends to release PHP, thereby inducing the production of alkaline phosphatase and releasing o-P into water column by enzymatic hydrolysis. The general features of the horizontal and vertical distributionof the main zooplankton groups in the northern Benguela upwellingregion during a period of abated upwelling in April 1986 arediscussed. Three different types of water were detected: (i)an inshore strip of recently upwelled water; (ii) oceanic waterover the slope; and (iii) Angola Current water penetrating fromthe north. Abundance of the most representative zooplanktongroups, as well as of the total volume of zooplankton, was highestin the shelf region, particularly south of Walvis Bay. Zooplanktonwas most abundant in areas where phytoplankton concentrationswere high and offshore transport was low. There were significantdifferences between the abundance levels of copepods, euphausiids,chaetognaths, and fish eggs and larvae in the different layersof the water column sampled, with the highest concentrationsin the surface layers. The sharpest vertical gradients wereobserved at stations affected by Angolan water, where the thermoclinewas very strong. In contrast, inshore, where stratificationwas low, no such vertical gradients existed.  相似文献

Sediment samples and environmental data were collected from November 1973 to August 1974 to analyze the distribution of sediment-associated diatom assemblages relative to vertical, horizontal, and seasonal gradients in Yaquina Estuary, Oregon. The distribution of diatoms was regulated primarily by mean salinity and characteristics of the sediment, i.e., mean sediment size and percentage of organic carbon. Prominent taxa in the river above Yaquina Bay exhibited overlapping distributions along the salinity gradient to a location in brackish water where the mean salinity was approximately 5%o. At this salinity, a relatively sharp discontinuity in the diatom flora existed which appeared to represent the biochemical and biophysical mechanisms involved in the osmotic regulation of fresh- and brackish-water diatoms. Relatively large disparities m the structure of diatom assemblages were found within relatively small areas of Yaquina Bay. These differences were attributed to properties of the sediment. Differences in diatom assemblages relative to variations in light intensity, water temperature and exposure to intertidal emergence were not apparent from the analysis of field data.  相似文献

Nickel-contaminated sediment can be remediated by electrokinetic techniques. In practical application, nickel may migrate into deep layers and potentially pollute unpolluted layers. In this study, the influence of different types of electric field operation modes on nickel migration in sediment layers was studied. The following experiments were conducted: without current application (NC), with horizontal electric field (HEF), with vertical electric field (VEF), and 2D electric field (horizontal and vertical). The following Ni overall removal efficacies were achieved: 48.9, 49.4, 55.7, and 58.1 after VEF, NC, 2D, and HEF, respectively. Using a vertical electric field in 2D and VEF resulted in less Ni found in the vertical sediment bed (25% and 60%, respectively). The available Ni content in a contaminated sediment bed decreased significantly after using the electrokinetic treatments: 46%, 62%, and 79% after HEF, VEF, and 2D, respectively. Vertical electric field is the most efficient for Ni removal in terms of the amount of Ni that migrated into deeper layers of sediment bed and its amount in mobile form. Thus, the vertical electric field is a promising and practical method for the remediation of nickel-contaminated sediments. Risk analysis indicated the efficiency of EK treatment as available Ni content was reduced after the applied treatments to a degree that poses no risk for the environment.  相似文献

Intensive surveys have been conducted to unravel spatial patterns of benthic infauna communities. Although it has been recognized that benthic organisms are spatially structured along the horizontal and vertical dimensions of the sediment, little is known on how these two dimensions interact with each other. In this study we investigated the interdependence between the vertical and horizontal dimensions in structuring marine nematodes assemblages. We tested whether the similarity in nematode species composition along the horizontal dimension was dependent on the vertical layer of the sediment. To test this hypothesis, three-cm interval sediment samples (15 cm depth) were taken independently from two bedforms in three estuaries. Results indicated that assemblages living in the top layers are more abundant, species rich and less variable, in terms of species presence/absence and relative abundances, than assemblages living in the deeper layers. Results showed that redox potential explained the greatest amount (12%) of variability in species composition, more than depth or particle size. The fauna inhabiting the more oxygenated layers were more homogeneous across the horizontal scales than those from the reduced layers. In contrast to previous studies, which suggested that reduced layers are characterized by a specific set of tolerant species, the present study showed that species assemblages in the deeper layers are more causal (characterized mainly by vagrant species). The proposed mechanism is that at the superficial oxygenated layers, species have higher chances of being resuspended and displaced over longer distances by passive transport, while at the deeper anoxic layers they are restricted to active dispersal from the above and nearby sediments. Such restriction in the dispersal potential together with the unfavorable environmental conditions leads to randomness in the presence of species resulting in the high variability between assemblages along the horizontal dimension.  相似文献

Fluctuations in the salinity and physicochemical characteristics of water quality were surveyed in brackish Lake Obuchi on the Shimokita Peninsula in Aomori, Japan. The mean salinity in the surface layer in all regions of Lake Obuchi was about 10 psu, whereas in the basin region at depths of greater than 3 m it was 20 psu. Furthermore, all the year round the halocline was formed at depths of 1–4 m. The maximum density gradient along a vertical axis in the center of the lake was observed at depths of 1–2 m in summer and 2–4 m in spring and fall. The depth of the maximum density gradient fluctuated with the seasons. In summer the water in the bottom layer was anoxic, and Fe, Mn, PO4 3−-P, and NH4 +-N supplied from the bottom sediment accumulated at high concentrations below the halocline. Thus, it was observed that the transfer of substances between the layers above and below the barrier formed by the halocline is suppressed. Although Lake Obuchi is small and shallow, the inflowing seawater easily resides, and a stable halocline readily forms because of the shape of its basin, which suddenly deepens on the Pacific Ocean side. The processes affecting the in-sea diffusion of nutrients at the Tiber River mouth are strongly dependent on seasonal conditions. In summer, during the low-flow period, a two-layer structure is established and it is then possible to detect the occurrence of biological processes in the lower layer, at the sediment level. During these conditions, the mean concentrations of dissolved organic carbon, inorganic phosphorus and nitrogen increase in the lower saline layer above the theoretical dilution values and, in some cases, the concentrations are double those in the upper layer.During high flow periods, mixing between the river and sea water occurs in the coastal area away from the mouth, with the transport of pollutants being affected mainly by physico-chemical processes.This paper reports the results of surveys of the distribution of soluble and particulate nutrients in the Tiber River estuary, as a function of salinity. The role of biological regeneration processes is inferred from a comparison of the different behaviour of the pollutants in summer and winter.  相似文献

1. We studied vertical and horizontal distribution of macroinvertebrates within a dense stand of Chara spp. in Lake Krankesjön, southern Sweden. Invertebrates were sampled at three depths within the vegetation and at three distances from the vegetation edge during day and night in July and August. Corresponding samples of oxygen content of the water were taken.
2. The densities (number of invertebrates per unit plant biomass) of most invertebrate taxa were generally lower in the upper layers of the vegetation than in the layers close to the sediment. The densities of several taxa ( Asellus aquaticus , Cloëon sp. and Polycentropodidae), as well as total density of invertebrates, were higher at the edge than in the innermost parts of the macrophyte stand, whereas snail densities generally were highest at the innermost sites.
3. Densities of A. aquaticus , Chironomidae larvae and Helobdella stagnalis generally increased at night. These taxa appear to undertake a diel vertical migration within the vegetation, towards, or even down to the sediment in daytime and up into the vegetation, in some cases to the vegetation surface, at night. Factors underlying the diel vertical migration are discussed, as are their ecological consequences.  相似文献

Bees were trained to discriminate between two or more black bars and similar bars at right angles, presented on a vertical surface. The positions of the bars were shifted every 5 min to prevent their locations being used as cues. The experiments exploit the fact that bees do not discriminate the global orientation of a straight line of small black squares that are individually resolved, because the local responses to equal lengths of edges at right angles cancel out, and each square has no residual orientation cue. The experiments measure the resolution of this effect by control of the width of the gaps between the squares. At the limit the unit orientation detectors cannot span the gaps. Training with vertical or with horizontal bars in separate experiments, and testing with vertical or horizontal lines of squares, shows that the vertical gaps in horizontal rows are detected with better resolution than horizontal gaps in vertical rows. The results show that unit orientation detectors span not more than 3 ommatidia.  相似文献

Three-dimensional structure of a mixed broad-leaved forest in Japan   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
An investigation was made in a mixed broad-leaved forest in Japan to determine the three-dimensional structure of the crowns of the component species. Vertical extensions and positions of foliage above a circle with a 20-cm diamter on the forest floor were measured using a grid of 177 points in the forest. The first leaf layer above a point was defined to be the highest aggregation of the foliage above the point, and the second leaf layer to be the one below. There were generally two leaf layers above each point, the first and the second. Each of the nineteen species in the plot belonged to either the first leaf layer or the second. Because the leaf layers varied in height from place to place in the forest, the two leaf layers were not separated clearly. Mean vertical depth of each leaf layer was about 2 m irrespective of the leaf layers and component species. Since the depths were similar among the species, species mean crown volumes (volumes of the spaces occupied by foliage) per unit land area mainly depended on horizontal extensions of their crowns, or the coverage. That is, species varied in their horizontal rather than vertical crown extensions. There was an upper limit (6 m) to the sum of vertical depths of the leaf layers above a point on the forest floor. The present study determined whether puffer Takifugu rubripes and T. xanthopterus larvae use selective tidal stream transport (STST) for migration into the nursery area. The influence of the tidal cycle on the vertical distribution of Thkifugu larvae was investigated during a 24 h sampling period at one location off Shimabara Peninsula in Ariake Bay. Samples were collected in three depth layers, from near the sea floor to near the surface (5, 20 and 30 m depth). The change in vertical distribution in relation to tidal phase was not observed. This data did not support STST hypothesis. Diel vertical migration was observed irrespective of tidal phase, where larvae migrated to the middle layer during the night, and sank to the bottom layer during the day, however, larvae hardly emerged into the surface layer during the study period. In Ariake Bay, the residual current leads to a layered vertically stratified structure, in which surface water flows towards the mouth and the middle-bottom water flows toward inner part of the Bay. It is suggested that Takifugu larvae use not STST but residual currents for transport into the nursery ground, namely, undergoing nocturnal diel vertical migration in the water column between the middle layer and the bottom layer where the net flow is northward.  相似文献

1. In the absence of fish predation, Daphnia exploiting a deep‐water algal maximum are faced with a trade‐off. They can either dwell in the epilimnion where development in the warm water is fast, but food shortage causes low egg production, or in the hypolimnion, where food availability is high but development is slow because of low temperatures. 2. We tested the hypotheses that (i) depth distributions of various ontogenetic stages (size classes and egg‐bearing females) differ because daphnids react to light with size‐specific diel vertical migration (DVM) even in the absence of fish (residual predator avoidance hypothesis) and (ii) differently sized daphnids select different depths because the relative importance of temperature and food varies for ontogenetic stages (physiological hypothesis). We used large indoor mesocosms (Plankton Towers) to test these hypotheses experimentally. 3. Temperature was the strongest factor governing the distribution, with larger proportions of the population dwelling in the food‐rich hypolimnion if the temperature gradient was shallow. There were small but significant differences between ontogenetic stages during the day, but not at night. This suggested the existence of a ‘residual’ effect of light on depth distribution in the absence of a fish cue. 4. Although large individuals exhibited greater amplitude of DVM, the physiological hypothesis had to be rejected. A stage‐specific physiological effect is unlikely to be directly triggered by light, hence vertical movement of the individuals should not be synchronised. Rather, being forced into deeper layers by the residual light response during the day, large and egg‐bearing females experience a lower average temperature during day than juveniles. They probably compensate for this by spending longer time periods in warm waters at night.  相似文献

The degree to which behaviour, vertical movement and horizontal transport, in relation to local hydrodynamics, may facilitate secondary dispersal in the water column was studied in post-larval Sillaginodes punctata in Port Phillip Bay, Australia. S. punctata were captured in shallow seagrass beds and released at the surface in three depth zones (1.5, 3 and 7 m) off-shore at each of two sites to mimic the re-entrainment of fish. The behaviour, depth and position of S. punctata were recorded through time. The direction and speed of local currents were described using an S4 current meter and the movement of drogues. Regardless of site, fish immediately oriented toward the bottom, and into the current after release. In shallow water (1.5 m), 86% of fish swam to the bottom within 2 min of release. At one site, the net horizontal displacement of fish was largely unrelated to the speed and direction of local currents; at a second site, fish could not maintain their position against the current, and the net horizontal displacement was related to the speed and direction of currents. In the intermediate depth zone, wide variability in depths of individual fish through time led to an average depth reached by fish that was between the shallow and deep zones. Based on daily increments in the otoliths, however, this variability was not related significantly to the time since entry of fish into Port Phillip Bay. In the deepest depth zone, 81% of fish remained within 1 m of the surface and their horizontal displacement was significantly related to the direction and speed of currents. Secondary dispersal of post-larval fish in the water column may be facilitated by the behaviour and vertical movements of fish, but only if fish reach deeper water, where their displacement (direction and distance) closely resembles local hydrodynamic regimes. In shallow water, fish behaviour and vertical migration actually reduce the potential for secondary dispersal.  相似文献
