This review article provides a general analysis of the legal challenges presented by antimicrobial use in food animal production and the emerging public health responses to such use. The article stresses the importance of national and international law to the public health strategies and the interdependence between national and international law. The article argues that antimicrobial use in food animal production poses a challenge to the development of global health jurisprudence.     

Journeys of difference: The use of migratory narratives among British Hindu Gujaratis

Increasing attention is being paid to the heterogeneous identity of British Asians. This article wishes to contribute to this literature by using research on British Hindu Gujaratis to highlight the type of distinct migratory histories contained in the term ‘South Asian diaspora’ and the importance these histories have in perceptions of community identity in the British context. The article will focus on how two research cohorts used migratory histories to distinguish the contemporary British Hindu Gujarati community. The article contends that histories are used selectively and have a direct relationship to the experience of the community in the British context.

'Beyond being': emergent narratives of suffering in Vietnam

Intertwining ethnographic and literary accounts, this article explores the mutual relationship between suffering and agency. The article describes how young Vietnamese women use narrative to find meaning in the suffering that a late-term abortion causes. Seeking to further develop anthropological use of the concept of social suffering, the article argues that existing scholarship has tended to neglect the importance of human agency and imagination, hinging as it does on suffering as entrenched within structural forces. The article contends that this neglect must be understood in the context of the particular epistemological and ethical conditions under which anthropological studies of human suffering are produced, and that closer attention to the human engagements out of which ethnographic accounts are fashioned may bring into analysis not only the harm that social forces can inflict on people, but also their capacities for action and imagination.     

The origins of “new assimilation theory”

Boundaries play an important role in Richard Alba’s articulation of new assimilation theory, as is evident in the major works he has produced during the past two decades. This article traces his interest in boundaries to “The Twilight of Ethnicity among Americans of European Ancestry: The Case of Italians”, an article he published in ERS in 1985. It is in this article and a related book published the same year that one can begin to trace the evolution of his thinking on both ethnic boundaries and the cultural content contained within those boundaries.     

City of Details: Interpreting the Personality of London

This article investigates the ways in which a group of enthusiasts for London constitute their city. The 'personality' attributed to London is described, as well as the interpretive acts that reveal it. These people, who also lead walking tours across the city, privilege 'detail' as their term of analysis. The article examines the identified qualities of that category, in particular its perceived capacity to animate the plural time-spaces of the city. This sensitivity to detail is presented as part of a sensing of place, which allows people to regard themselves as uniquely able to see the city. The article is intended as a contribution to the ethnography of London.     

Transnationalism reloaded: the historical trajectory of a concept

In this commentary, I discuss the importance of Portes, Guarnizo and Landolt’s article, focusing on three specific points. First, I argue that this 1999 article represented a turning point in transnational migration studies, in that it made it possible to address important weaknesses in this field of study. Second, I reflect on the article’s lack of reference to the nation-state and its power to shape transnational fields. Third, I argue that the cumulative knowledge gained over the last two decades – triggered in part by the claims of this 1999 article – have been steadily integrated into this field of investigation, rendering possible important theoretical alterations. These insights have made possible a shift towards a new stance, a transnational perspective whose specific epistemology makes it possible to develop explanatory frameworks for current transformation processes and to revise social theory more generally.     

Integration of genomes of infectious viruses

Summary The article contains a review relating to the integration of genomes of infectious viruses in Eukaryotic cells. Data are presented that were obtained in the study of tissue cultures chronically infected with viruses, in the study of pathologic and ecologic processes. Based on the evidence accumulated, some theoretical and applied aspects of the problem are discussed.An invited article.

Social semantics: toward a genuine pluralism in the study of social behaviour

Pluralism is the coexistence of equivalent theoretical frameworks, either because they are historically entrenched or because they achieve separate insights by viewing the same process in different ways. A recent article by West et al. [Journal of Evolutionary Biology (2007) vol. 20, 415-432] attempts to classify the many equivalent frameworks that have been developed to study the evolution of social behaviour. This article addresses shortcomings in the West et al.'s article, especially with respect to multilevel selection, in a common effort to maximize the benefits of pluralism while minimizing the semantic costs.

This article discusses the need for transporter‐mediated uptake for investigations addressing the mechanism of action of microcystins [with reference to the previous article in Cell Biology International by de Souza Votto (2007) 31:1359–1366].     

Disease mitigation measures in the control of pandemic influenza

The threat of an influenza pandemic has alarmed countries around the globe and given rise to an intense interest in disease mitigation measures. This article reviews what is known about the effectiveness and practical feasibility of a range of actions that might be taken in attempts to lessen the number of cases and deaths resulting from an influenza pandemic. The article also discusses potential adverse second- and third-order effects of mitigation actions that decision makers must take into account. Finally, the article summarizes the authors' judgments of the likely effectiveness and likely adverse consequences of the range of disease mitigation measures and suggests priorities and practical actions to be taken.
