Females of three skimmers,Orthetrum japonicum, O. albistylum andO. triangulare, were captured in forests and paddy fields. They were dissected and examined for the number of submature and mature eggs.Orthetrum japonicum andO. albistylum continuously developed eggs throughout their reproductive period. The volume of mature eggs inO. albistylum was the smallest among the three species. The number of mature eggs in ovaries decreased from morning to afternoon, suggesting that all of them oviposited around noon. The number of mature eggs laid byO. japonicum, O. albistylum andO. triangulare was estimated at about 400, 800 and >2000 a day, respectively.  相似文献

为了解不同林龄杉木、马尾松人工林地地下根系生物量及碳储量特征,以广西杉木、马尾松主产区5个不同林龄阶段(幼龄林、中龄林、近熟林、成熟林、过熟林)的人工林为研究对象,采用全根挖掘法和土钻法获取标准木根系生物量、灌草根系生物量和林分细根生物量,并测定其碳含量,分析其不同林龄阶段地下根系生物量和碳储量分配特征。结果表明:杉木、马尾松林地下根系总生物量分别在9.06—31.40Mg/hm~2和7.91—53.40Mg/hm~2之间,各林龄阶段根系总生物量总体上呈现随林龄增加而增加的趋势,杉木林细根生物量随林龄的增加呈现出先减后增的趋势,马尾松呈现出逐渐减小的趋势;林分各层次根系碳含量表现为乔木灌木草本、细根;杉木、马尾松地下根系碳储量变化趋势与生物量变化趋势相同,杉木、马尾松林不同林龄阶段各层次根系和土壤细根总碳储量分别在7.56—21.97Mg/hm~2和8.86—29.95Mg/hm~2之间;地下根系碳储量总体上以乔木根系占优势,且随林龄的增大其比例呈增加的趋势。  相似文献

We investigated the influence of human activities on the spawning migration of the mud loach, Misgurnus anguillicaudatus. Mud loaches migrate from rivers to paddy fields for spawning. In this study, the number of adult loaches in paddy fields showed a peak in late May and rapidly decreased in July. In early July, water is discharged from paddy fields in order to allow the fields to dry for a few weeks, and water is again supplied later. The spawning season of the loaches probably spans from mid May to August; this was concluded by observing physiological indicators such as the gonad somatic index, oocyte maturity and serum levels of testosterone, estradiol-17β and 17α, 20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one. When the loaches mature, they migrated to paddy fields if they could swim upward through the drainage ditches. However, the drainage ditches of modern paddy fields were reconstructed to deepen the water levels. The artificial drought of the rice culture management led to a discharge of water and loaches from the paddy fields during their spawning season. These results indicate that modern rice cultivation causes obstruction of the migration route and loss of spawning grounds; consequently, loaches use limited space and period of the paddy field for their spawning.  相似文献

Flight activities of three Spodoptera species were measured by the aid of flight actograph: S. litura and S. exuiga being regarded as long‐distance migratory insects, and S. depravata being non‐migratory and diapause‐inducible species. In all species tested, flight activities were observed only in scotophase, males showed far higher activities than females, being several times higher at the time of maximum flight activity, which was observed within 2 days after adult eclosion. Total flight activity in males was highest in S. litura, some being flyable even 12 days after eclosion, followed by S. exigua being one‐third compared to the former species, while in S. depravata flight activity was nearly half of that of the second species and most ceased to fly within a week after eclosion. There occurred species‐specific daily rhythms in flight activity during respective scotophase. In S. litura, both females and males exhibited a peak of flight activity shortly after light‐off and exhibited the second flight activity in late scotophase, the females slightly but the males more actively compared to early scotophase. In S. exigua, both sexes did not respond to light‐off, did not show a peak of flight activity in early scotophase, whereas males, but not females prominently increased activity toward the end of scotophase. In S. depravata, both sexes exhibited a peak of flight activity in early scotophase, and the males revived flight activity, being maximum shortly before light‐on, but the females did not show a clear rhythm in flight activity. These features observed in flight activity were discussed in relation with migratory capability.  相似文献

探讨不同林龄麻栎林地下部分根系的生物量与碳储量,为麻栎林的经营管理及碳汇管理等提供科学依据。以江苏省句容市不同林龄(幼龄林、中龄林、近熟林、成熟林)的麻栎林为研究对象,采用全根挖掘法获取麻栎各级根系及灌草层根系,并测定其生物量、碳含量,构建麻栎根系生物量模型,估算麻栎林地下部分根系碳储量及麻栎林群落碳储量。通过11种数学回归模型的比较,构建麻栎各级根系生物量幂回归模型,计算得到幼龄林、中龄林、近熟林、成熟林麻栎根系生物量分别为14.81t/hm~2、41.15t/hm~2、50.36t/hm~2、53.75t/hm~2,各级根系生物量大小顺序是:根桩粗根大根细根;灌木与草本植物根系生物量分别为0.48—1.71t/hm~2、0.13—0.60t/hm~2;不同林龄麻栎林群落根系生物量为15.42—56.06t/hm~2,且随林龄的增大而增大。麻栎根系碳含量大小顺序为:根桩粗根大根细根,且碳含量差异显著;灌木与草本植物根系碳含量分别为41.84%—43.79%、34.03%—38.48%,随林龄变化均无明显变化规律。麻栎林乔木根系碳储量随林龄增大而增大,幼龄林、中龄林、近熟林、成熟林根系碳储量分别为6.01t/hm~2、17.41t/hm~2、21.79t/hm~2、21.99t/hm~2;灌木与草本植物根系碳储量均随林龄增大而增大;幼龄林、中龄林、近熟林、成熟林群落根系碳储量分别为6.26t/hm~2、17.74t/hm~2、22.37t/hm~2、22.94t/hm~2,且乔木层灌木层草本层。麻栎林地下部分根系生物量与碳储量随林龄的增大而增大,幼龄林到近熟林生长过程中生物量与碳储量增加快速,近熟林后生物量与碳素积累缓慢,且与成熟林接近。  相似文献

The emerald ash borer, Agrilus planipennis, is a serious invasive pest of North American ash (Fraxinus) trees. In captivity, mating is initiated by beetles at least 10 days old, and appears to be based simply on random contact with a member of the opposite sex. In the field, male A. planipennis search the tree during flight, and attempt to copulate with dead beetles of both sexes pinned to leaves, after descending rapidly straight down onto the pinned beetles from a height of from 30 to 100 cm. All evidence suggests that males find potential mates using visual cues. Equal numbers of feral males approach all ‘dummy’ beetles; however, considerably more time is spent attempting copulation with dead females rather than males, suggesting a contact chemical cue. Sticky traps prepared from dead, pinned EAB capture crawling insects as well as male A. planipennis, at a rate similar to that at which small purple sticky traps of similar overall area capture crawling insects and both sexes of feral EAB.  相似文献

Emergence, preening, and flight initiation were studied in laboratory-reared Trichogramma minutum Riley (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae). Male parasitoids emerged first and flew before females. When both sexes were present in flight cylinders, female parasitoids flew before males. Flight propensity in males was negatively related to the number of emerging females, while flight propensity in females was independent of the number of males present. Ambient temperature significantly affected the propensity and timing of flight; between 70–80% of the parasitoids flew at 25 and 30 °C while less than 4%, mostly males, flew at 20 °C. No flights were observed at 15 °C. The presence of fresh host eggs caused a reduction in the proportion of female parasitoids that flew and a delay in the time to flight for the females that did fly. The presence of food increased the flight propensity of female parasitoids, but did not affect the timing of flight. The relationship between flight behaviour and the efficiency of mass-reared Trichogramma is discussed in terms of its importance for inundative release programmes.  相似文献

Disturbances by fire and harvesting are thought to regulate the carbon balance of the Canadian boreal forest over scales of several decades. However, there are few direct measurements of carbon fluxes following disturbances to provide data needed to refine mathematical models. The eddy covariance technique was used with paired towers to measure fluxes simultaneously at disturbed and undisturbed sites over periods of about one week during the growing season in 1998 and 1999. Comparisons were conducted at three sites: a 1‐y‐old burned jackpine stand subjected to an intense crown fire at the International Crown Fire Modelling Experiment site near Fort Providence, North‐west Territories; a 1‐y‐old clearcut aspen area at the EMEND project near Peace River, Alberta; and a 10‐y‐old burned, mixed forest near Prince Albert National Park, Saskatchewan. Nearby mature forest stands of the same types were also measured as controls. The harvested site had lower net radiation (Rn), sensible (H) and latent (LE) heat fluxes, and greater ground heat fluxes (G) than the mature forest. Daytime CO2 fluxes were much reduced, but night‐time CO2 fluxes were identical to that of the mature aspen forest. It is hypothesized that the aspen roots remained alive following harvesting, and dominated soil respiration. The overall effect was that the harvested site was a carbon source of about 1.6 gC m?2 day?1, while the mature site was a sink of about ?3.8 gC m?2 day?1. The one‐year‐old burn had lower Rn, H and LE than the mature jackpine forest, and had a continuous CO2 efflux of about 0.8 gC m–2 day?1 compared to the mature forest sink of ? 0.5 g C m?2 day?1. The carbon source was likely caused by decomposition of fire‐killed vegetation. The 10‐y‐old burned site had similar H, LE, and G to the mature mixed forest site. Although the diurnal amplitude of the CO2 fluxes were slightly lower at the 10‐y‐old site, there was no significant difference between the daily integrals (? 1.3 gC m?2 day?1 at both sites). It appears that most of the change in carbon flux occurs within the first 10 years following disturbance, but more data are needed on other forest and disturbance types for the first 20 years following the disturbance event.  相似文献

Life history parameters were estimated for Dall's porpoise, Phocoenoides dalli, from biological specimens collected in the western Aleutian Islands, during 1981–1987. Of 2,033 males and 3,566 females examined, reproductive data were available for 1,941 males and 1,906 females; ages were determined for 813 males and 1,297 females. Female sexual maturity was based on the presence of one or more corpus on either ovary; 845 were sexually immature and 1,061 were sexually mature. Two estimates of female average age at sexual maturity (ASM) were 3.8 and 4.4 yr; average length at sexual maturity (LSM) was 172 cm. Males were considered sexually mature when evidence of spermatogenesis was detected; 1,136 were sexually immature and 805 were sexually mature. Two estimates of male ASM were 4.5 and 5.0 yr; LSM was 179.7 cm. Physical maturity was assessed for 246 males and 446 females by examining the degree of fusion in thoracic vertebral epiphyses. For both sexes, the average age at physical maturity was 7.2 yr. Average length at physical maturity was 202.6 cm for males and 192.7 cm for females. Average lengths of physically mature males (x?= 198.1 cm, SE = 0.8566) and females (x?= 189.7 cm, SE = 0.4002) were significantly different(P < 0.0001). Early postnatal growth was rapid in both sexes. A secondary growth spurt in both mass and length was characteristic for both sexes; the increase in length preceded the mass increase by 1–2 yr. Average length at birth (LOB) was approximately 100 cm; birth mass averaged 11.3 kg (SE = 0.0772). By the time the umbilicus had healed (<2 mo), the average length and mass had increased to 114.1 cm and 23.8 kg, respectively. Gestation period based on projections using LOB was 12 mo, but this was considered an overestimate. Calving was modal, centered in early July; an annual reproductive interval was indicated. Among the sexually mature females, 120 were pregnant, 55 were pregnant and lactating, 321 were pregnant with colostrum, and 33 were “resting.” By 3 July (95% CI =x? 1 d), 50% of births had occurred, during each of the seven years sampled. The ovulation rate was estimated at 0.914 ovulations per average reproductive year. Enlarged follicles and recent ovulations were observed in postpartum females in late July.  相似文献

In the southwestern United States, Eretmocerus eremicus (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) is a native parasitoid of the Bemisia complex (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae). However, little information currently exists on its potential as a biological control agent of whiteflies or on the factors that influence its tendencies to disperse. In this study, we examined the flight behavior of male and female E. eremicus in response to skylight (here simulated by a mercury-vapor lamp) and plant cues (a 550-nm filtered light) in a vertical flight chamber. Approximately 90% of the parasitoids took off in response to the skylight cue. Both sexes were capable of sustained flights in excess of 60 min; however, males had higher rates of climb than females (3.31±0.17 and 2.63±0.19 cm s–1, respectively). When a plant cue was presented during the parasitoid's phototactic flight, four relatively distinct responses were observed. Fifty-one percent of the individuals responded to the plant cue throughout their flight by flying toward or by landing on the cue. The majority of these parasitoids were females. Approximately 12% of the wasps exhibited an intermittent, positive response to the plant cue. Twenty percent exhibited a `migratory' response. These parasitoids, which were predominantly males, failed to respond to the plant cue until they had flown for a considerable period. Finally, 17% failed to respond to the target during their flight. Approximately 37% of the individuals that showed a positive response to the plant cue actually landed on it and the majority of these were female. The differential response to the plant cue by male and female parasitoids could be, in part, because females are driven to locate hosts in which to oviposit, and males are driven to find mates.  相似文献

为探讨我国亚热带毛竹林(Phyllostachys edulis)生长季的能量平衡关系,利用开路涡度相关法,对2011年毛竹林生长季的能量通量的变化特征进行了研究,并应用能量平衡比率法和线性回归2种方法,分析了能量闭合的特点。结果表明,我国亚热带毛竹林生长季的净辐射总量为1738.2 MJ m–2,显热通量为354.3 MJ m–2,潜热通量为1146.0 MJ m–2,土壤热通量为58.9 MJ m–2,土壤为热汇,显热通量占净辐射的20.4%,潜热通量占65.9%,土壤热通量占3.4%。毛竹林生长季的能量闭合度为0.89,月平均闭合度为0.91,但仍有11%的能量不闭合。可见,毛竹林生长季以潜热能量散失形式为主,各能量分量均以净辐射变化为基础,且日变化基本呈单峰型曲线。  相似文献

The ecological and social bases of the mating system of the seed-feeding bug, Dysdercus bimaculatus(Hemiptera: Pyrrhocoridae), were studied in the lab and in aggregations at the host tree, Sterculia apetala(Malvales: Malvaceae), in Panama. On theoretical grounds, two factors are predicted to be of importance in determining the evolution of male mating tactics in Ms species: the operational sex ratio and the probability that undefended females will mate with other males, subjecting the gametes of deserters to sperm competition. Results of a study of a related species suggested that sperm displacement is probably substantial. Adult sex ratios at numerous sites were significantly male biased, and females whose mates were removed remated before oviposition (i. e., sperm utilization). These results predict that a mate defense tactic is likely to be superior to a nondefense tactic. The biological significance of the parameters is supported by observations that captive pairs often remained in copulafor several days, until just before oviposition. However, substantial variation in copulation duration was also observed, and possible causes of this variation are considered. Causes of male biased adult sex ratios were investigated by monitoring demographic changes within a single aggregation over 2 months. Both female juvenile and adult mortality rates were greater than male. In addition, dissections of reproductive adults showed that the flight muscles of females, but not males, had histolyzed, so that female reproduction is physiologically limited to a single site. Greater rates of immigration among both mature and young males suggests that an excess of males may also be found in the populations of bugs that subsequently colonize other host plants, so that female scarcity is typical of aggregations in all stages of development. The evolution of sex-limtied flight muscle histolysis may be explained by greater patchiness of females than males as mating resources, plus a lower energetic benefit/cost ratio of histolysis for males.  相似文献

The eyes of stalk-eyed flies (Diopsidae) are positioned at the end of rigid peduncles projected laterally from the head. In dimorphic species the eye-stalks of males exceed the eye-stalks of females and can exceed body length. Eye-stalk length is sexually selected in males improving male reproductive success. We tested whether the long eye-stalks have a negative effect on free-flight and aerial turning behavior by analyzing the morphology and free-flight trajectories of male and female Cyrtodiopsis dalmanni. At flight posture the mass-moment-of-inertia for rotation about a vertical axis was 1.49-fold higher in males. Males also showed a 5% increase in wing length compared to females. During free-flight females made larger turns than males (54 ± 31.4 vs. 49 ± 36.2°, t test, P < 0.033) and flew faster while turning (9.4 ± 5.45 vs. 8.4 ± 6.17 cm s−1, ANOVA, P < 0.021). However, turning performance of both sexes overlapped, and turn rate in males even marginally exceeded turn rate in females (733 ± 235.3 vs. 685 ± 282.6 deg s−1, ANCOVA, P < 0.047). We suggest that the increase in eye-span does result in an increase in the mechanical requirements for aerial turning but that male C. dalmanni are capable of compensating for the constraint of longer eye-stalks during the range of turns observed through wingbeat kinematics and increased wing size.  相似文献

The efficacy of using natural enemies to control pests under field conditions largely depends on their mobility and, more specifically, on their capacity to quickly locate pest infestation. For many natural enemies, for example parasitoids, mobility is directly related to flight aptitude, which is determined by the capacity and inclination of a species to engage in flight. In this study, we determined the various factors that affected flight performance of Microplitis mediator (Haliday) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), using a computer-monitored flight mill. No differences were found in flight performance (i.e., flight distance, duration, speed) between both sexes of M. mediator, and flight capacity increased up to an age of 5–7 days followed by a gradual decline afterwards. For one-day-old female parasitoids, mean (±SE) flight distance and duration were 6.23 ± 0.88 km and 85.15 ± 14.44 min, respectively, with a maximum flight distance of 18.0 km. For male parasitoids, mean flight distance and duration were 5.27 ± 0.51 km and 85.74 ± 7.63 min, respectively. Mating status did not affect flight performance of males, while flight distance of four-day-old ovipositing M. mediator females was much lower than that of un-mated females of the same age. Un-mated adults flew most actively at 22–24°C and inclination to fly gradually declined with decreasing temperature. Temperatures above 26°C considerably reduced flight activity of M. mediator. Wasps engaged in normal flight under a broad range of relative humidity (RH) conditions, with an optimum RH range identified as 75–90%. Our research shows that M. mediator is a highly active parasitoid, because both sexes show great inclination to fly under a range of environmental conditions and flight capacity at different ages. This paper compares male life history parameters of two populations of Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata Blyth, 1875), studied without provisioning: Yakushima (M. f. yakui), a subtropical forest habitat in southwestern Japan, and Kinkazan (M. f. fuscata), a temperate, deciduous forest habitat in northeastern Japan. The males of the two sites experienced similar life histories with respect to several traits. Age at natal dispersal was at about 5 years. Average troop residence was about three years. Most males joined troops at the bottom of the rank order, although a few males joined troops at the top rank. Dominance ranks of males tended to rise with the death or departure of higher ranking males. Visiting males accounted for about 41% of observed mating at both sites. However, the two sites differed in the sex ratio of troops, partly because a larger proportion of males apparently lived outside of troops in the Kinkazan site compared to Yakushima. In particular, non-natal young males were absent from the main study troop at Kinkazan. Large within-species variation may exist in the degree to which males associate with troops.  相似文献

This study investigated the uptake of 134Cs by Lactuca sativaL., Silybum marianumGaertn., Centaurea cyanusL., Carthamus tinctorius L. from the Asteraceae, and Beta vulgaris L. var. `Lutiancai' and Beta vulgaris L. var. `Hongtiancai' from the Chenopodiaceae grown in two widely-distributed soils (a paddy soil and a red soil) in South China. The results showed that the plants growing on the paddy soil had a relatively high yield and low [134Cs] while those growing on the red soil showed the opposite trend. The accumulation of 134Cs was dependent on plant species and soil types. For the paddy soil, mean values for [134Cs] were higher for the species of the Asteraceae (ranging from 165 to 185 Bq g–1) than for those of the Chenopodiaceae (less than 140 Bq g–1). For the red soil, S. marianumand C. cyanus of the Asteraceae had high average concentrations of 134Cs ranging from 340 to 400 Bq g–1 but L. sativa and C. tinctorius from the same family had low concentrations of 134Cs ranging from 115 to 200 Bq g–1 on a dry weight basis. B. vulgaris L. var. `Lutiancai' and Beta vulgaris L. var. `Hongtiancai' accumulated from 120 to 231 Bq 134Cs g–1 of plant shoot. The transfer factor values of 134Cs for the studied species were in general higher in red soil than in paddy soil except C. tinctorius. All plant species from the Asteraceae family growing on the paddy soil had higher transfer factors than the B. vulgaris species. S. marianum, and C. cyanus growing on the red soil had TFs >1, being much higher than the B. vulgaris species. The results therefore showed that the plant species from the Asteraceae could accumulate higher concentrations of radiocesium than the Beta vulgaristhat has previously been suggested as a candidate for phytoremediation of radiocesium contaminated soils.  相似文献

Variation in copulation duration of Drosophila mojavensisstrains was influenced by both sexes. Males maintained predominant control, as copulation duration of pairs from different strains was more similar to that of the strain from which the male was derived, but female origin also contributed significantly to the duration of copulation. Variation among strains was controlled by genes acting additively in both sexes. The size of both males and females also affected copulation duration. Small males copulated longer on average than large males, while males paired with large females copulated longer than those paired with small females. The importance of copulation duration to fitness was tested by correlation analyses with male size, female size, female remating latency, and number of eggs laid prior to female remating. Longer copulations stimulated earlier oviposition, possibly by increasing accessory gland secretions that are passed by males during copulation.  相似文献

The role of gibberellins (GAs) in determining sex in the gametophyte of the fern Blechnum spicant L. was studied through (a) the effect of exogenous GA4+7 and GA3 (b) quantitation of the endogenous levels of GA1, GA3, GA4, GA7, GA9, and GA20 in male and female gametophytes, and (c) the effect of flurprimidol, a GAs biosynthesis inhibitor of the steps of oxidation of ent-kaureno to ent-kaurenoic acid. Our results show that GA4+7 had a slight effect of inducing either male or female sexual organs, antheridia and archegonia, respectively. The endogenous GAs content was not significantly different between sexes, but the GA4, GA7, and GA20 levels were raised above those of the other GAs in both sexes. Neither antheridiogen biosynthesis nor antheridia formation was inhibited by flurprimidol. Gametophytes regenerated from homogenized mature gametophytes (HG) show a different physiological behavior than spore-derived gametophytes. In the first case, gametophytes are males and synthesize antheridiogen before they attain maturity, in contrast to what occurs in spore-derived gametophytes which are females and synthesize antheridiogen when mature.  相似文献

Summary Mayflies (Ephemeroptera) are known to have short adult life-spans. Adults are unable to feed, and they utilize reserves stored during their aquatic larval stage. Energy reserves (fat, glycogen, and free sugars) of mature larvae, subimagoes and imagoes of both sexes of Siphlonurus aestivalis Eaton were compared. All the stages of both sexes had low glycogen and free sugar contents, and the only significant change occurred during the transformation of the mature larva to subimago when almost all the reserves of free sugars were used up. Glycogen and free sugars may serve as energy sources permitting individuals to swim and fly out of the water during emergence. Fat made up most of the energy reserves of mature larvae and was the main source of energy used during the final development of both sexes. Young adult males had high fat reserves which they used as a source of energy for their swarming flights. In contrast, females did not seem to use a significant amount of fat for flight. This difference is probably related to the different mating strategies of the sexes in this species. Males perform long flights waiting for females, whereas females perform only brief flights to mate and reproduce.  相似文献
