ABSTRACT In a review of the horseflies of the Tabanus mandarinus species group in Korea, six species are recognized. Among them, Tabanus nipponicus is newly recorded from Korea. Interspecific symbiotic relationships involve a complex network of interactions, and understanding their outcome requires quantification of the costs and benefits to both partners. We experimentally investigated the costs and benefits in the relationship between European bitterling fish (Rhodeus sericeus) and freshwater mussels that are used by R. sericeus for oviposition. This relationship has hitherto been thought mutualistic, on the premise that R. sericeus use mussels as foster parents of their embryos while mussels use R. sericeus as hosts for their larvae. We demonstrate that R. sericeus is a parasite of European mussels, because it (i) avoids the cost of infection by mussel larvae and (ii) imposes a direct cost on mussels. Our experiments also indicate a potential coevolutionary arms race between bitterling fishes and their mussel hosts; the outcome of this relationship may differ between Asia, the centre of distribution of bitterling fishes, and Europe where they have recently invaded.  相似文献

Plastic pollution in the form of small particles (diameter less than 5 mm)-termed 'microplastic'-has been observed in many parts of the world ocean. They are known to interact with biota on the individual level, e.g. through ingestion, but their population-level impacts are largely unknown. One potential mechanism for microplastic-induced alteration of pelagic ecosystems is through the introduction of hard-substrate habitat to ecosystems where it is naturally rare. Here, we show that microplastic concentrations in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre (NPSG) have increased by two orders of magnitude in the past four decades, and that this increase has released the pelagic insect Halobates sericeus from substrate limitation for oviposition. High concentrations of microplastic in the NPSG resulted in a positive correlation between H. sericeus and microplastic, and an overall increase in H. sericeus egg densities. Predation on H. sericeus eggs and recent hatchlings may facilitate the transfer of energy between pelagic- and substrate-associated assemblages. The dynamics of hard-substrate-associated organisms may be important to understanding the ecological impacts of oceanic microplastic pollution.  相似文献

The resource allocation patterns within populations of Spinifex sericeus R.Br, were studied on the mid north coast of NSW. Sand burial and nutrient availability were two major factors influencing the allocation of resources to roots, culms, tillers and inflorescences, resulting in different growth forms in different sections of the dune. The data suggest that pollen availability may affect allocation to seeds late in the flowering season. Spinifex sericeus was found to have a greater below- than above-ground biomass, especially on the crest of the incipient foredune where sand accretion was high. The ability of culms of S. sericeus to grow upwards at a rate that generally prevents complete burial of the tillers is one mechanism which allows S. sericeus to vary resource allocation patterns in response to a varying environment. Differences in the inflorescence characteristics of males and females indicate their different functions. The much greater floret number of males indicated the importance of pollen dispersal. Female inflorescences consisted mainly of structures other than florets and suggested the importance of the female inflorescence in seed dispersal. Addition of nitrogen and phosphorus increased the number of spikelets and seeds but not the proportion of spikelets which produced seed.  相似文献

Abstract:   The spatio-temporal distribution of the pod borer Maruca vitrata was assessed on Lonchocarpus sericeus over a period of 6 months, in order to develop sampling plans and facilitate sampling on this host plant. Lonchocarpus sericeus , one of the preferred alternative host plants of M. vitrata is widely spread in Benin and should therefore be included in the ecological management of the insect. Some experiments were conducted at an ecological site in south Benin, where L. sericeus can be found. The analysis of 17 weekly samples showed that tree canopy did not have a significant effect (P=0.3471) on larval distribution. Significant differences (P=0.0001) were obtained between the sizes of flowers (10, 20, 30 and 40 racemes). Geographical quadrants consisting of the upper east branches, lower east branches, upper west branches and lower west branches did not differ significantly (P=0.8713). The time of infestation of L. sericeus by M. vitrata was investigated by taking samples every 2 days. Data analysis of these samples revealed that L. sericeus was infested at the open flower stage. Temporal distribution of larvae showed the greatest abundance of larvae occurred in June. The index of aggregation was 1.37 with the T aylor law and 1.26 with the Iwao procedure. These values showed that the larval dispersion pattern is negative binomial. On this basis, sequential sampling plans were developed and these could permit an accurate estimate of tree data for sampling .  相似文献

Polyamines extracted from whole bodies of four springtails, Tomocerus ishibashii, Hypogastrura communis, Sinella cruviseta and Folsomia candida, a bristletail, Pedetontus nipponicus, and two silverfish, Lepisma saccharina and Thermobia domestica, were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography. All seven apterous insect species contained putrescine, cadaverine and spermidine as the common major polyamines, detected at the level of micromol/g wet mass. T. ishibashii also contained spermine, S. cruviseta contained norspermidine and norspermine and H. communis, F. candida and P. nipponicus contained diaminopropane, norspermidine and norspermine, as minor polyamines above the detection limit (0.01 micromol/g wet mass). The occurrence of diaminopropane, norspermidine, norspermine, spermine and thermospermine was confirmed in L. saccharina and T. domestica. The novel polyamines norspermidine, norspermine and thermospermine, widespread in higher insects, were also distributed within the primitive apterygotan insects.  相似文献

A complex of invasive weevils that consume roots as larvae and foliage as adults have become established in northern hardwood forests in North America. We evaluated adults of the two most prominent species, Phyllobius oblongus and Polydrusus sericeus, for longevity, foliage consumption, and egg production on several putative hosts commonly found in this ecosystem. Adult pairs were monitored in no-choice laboratory assays for the duration of their lifespans on basswood, Tilia americana, ironwood, Ostrya virginiana, sugar maple, Acer saccharum, raspberry, Rubus spp., or leatherwood, Dirca palustris. Overall, P. sericeus lived more than twice as long as P. oblongus and lived longer on all hosts. P. sericeus consumed more total leaf area than P. oblongus on basswood, ironwood, and raspberry, but P. oblongus had a higher leaf consumption rate on sugar maple. Basswood was a very good host for P. sericeus. Leatherwood was not a suitable host for either weevil species. The higher longevity and fecundity of P. sericeus than P. oblongus did not agree with that expected from population data, in that the latter species is substantially more abundant. This likely reflects P. oblongus ' superior performance on sugar maple, the dominant flora in the study area. These data provide a basis for estimating the broader impacts of adult weevil feeding.  相似文献

The presence and distribution of nitric oxide synthase (NOS)-like neurons as well as tyrosine hydroxylase-immunoreactive (TH) neurons was studied in the diencephalon of the cypriniform teleost Rhodeus sericeus. The anatomical relationships between tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)- and nitric oxide synthase (NOS)-containing cells were visualized both by NOS-immunohistochemistry and NADPH-histochemistry. Immunohistochemical labeling and morphological studies were performed on the same sections. The results reported in this paper show that both a NOS and TH activity are present in the preoptic region, posterior tuberculum, paraventricular organ and hypothalamus of R. sericeus. Putative nitrergic neurons were identified in all major hypophysiotrophic nuclei of the R. sericeus brain using both NADPH-d histochemistry and nNOS immunohistochemistry. In the preoptic region, nitrergic neurons were found in both the parvocellular and the magnocellular nuclei. Within these nuclei, the distribution of NADPH-d reactivity was similar to that of nNOS immunoreactivity. However, we found no evidence of colocalization of NADPH-d and nNOS in consecutive sections. NOS- and TH-containing neurons were observed in all the nuclei under study (hypothalamus, posterior tuberculum, ventral thalamus) and telencephalon (preoptic region), although most neurons showing the coexistence of both substances were mainly located in the preoptic nucleus and hypothalamus, some labelled neurons were found in the posterior tuberculum. Most of the cerebrospinalliquor-contacting cells (LCNs) in diencephalic periventricular area of R. sericeus were TH-immunoreactive. Also, a large number ofnitrergic small LCNs distributed throughout the third ventricle were observed in these regions. The data obtained supports the existence of a nitrergic circumventricular system in teleost. LCNs in R. sericeus are thought to be involved in osmoregulatory functions as osmosensitive neurons. Due to their chemical properties, NO produced by these cells might play an important role in the maintenance and regulation of CSF homeostasis through the modulation of cerebral blood flow.  相似文献

Restriction site maps of the rDNA genes of nine Bromus species are described. The rDNA repeat units ranged from 8.2 to 11.1 kbp in length. Intraspecific length variation was observed in the BamHI digestions in three of the nine species. Restriction site variation was observed mainly in the intergenic spacer (IGS) but was also detected in the coding region. A unique KpnI site was present in the IGS of Bromus tectorum and Bromus sericeus (subgenus Stenobromus); in addition, B. sericeus contained an extra EcoRI site. An additional DraI site was observed in the IGS of Bromus trinii (subgenus Neobromus). A BstEII site in the IGS, common to seven of the species, was absent in B. tectorum and B. sericeus. In the coding region, a 2.1-kbp BstEII fragment was present in four subgenera represented by Bromus inermis and Bromus erectus (subgenus Festucaria), Bromus marginatus and Bromus carinatus (subgenus Ceratochloa), B. tectorum and B. sericeus (subgenus Stenobromus), and B. trinii (subgenus Neobromus); a similar fragment of only 1.1 kbp was present in Bromus mollis and Bromus arvensis (subgenus Bromus). An additional BamHI site was present in the coding region of B. erectus. Ribosomal DNA data suggested that B. mollis and B. arvensis (subgenus Bromus) are genetically isolated from the other subgenera, which showed a derived relationship. Restriction site mapping of the rDNA genes could provide useful molecular data for species identification and population and evolutionary studies in Bromus. Meiotic and mitotic chromosomes of Dichotomius nisus, D. semisquamosus and D. sericeus were analyzed after conventional staining, C-banding and silver nitrate staining. In addition, Dichotomius nisus and D. semisquamosus chromosomes were also analyzed after fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) with an rDNA probe. The species analyzed had an asymmetrical karyotype with 2n = 18 and meta-submetacentric chromosomes. The sex determination mechanism was of the Xy(p) type in D. nisus and D. semisquamosus and of the Xy (r) type in D. sericeus. C-banding revealed the presence of pericentromeric blocks of constitutive heterochromatin (CH) in all the chromosomes of the three species. After silver staining, the nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) were located in autosomes of D. semisquamosus and D. sericeus and in the sexual bivalent of D. nisus. FISH with an rDNA probe confirmed NORs location in D. semisquamosus and in D. nisus. Our results suggest that chromosome inversions and fusions occurred during the evolution of the group.  相似文献

A new subgenus of the genus Hylaeus Fabricius, 1793 is described and illustrated. The subgenus Laxoprosopis subgen. nov. is erected for one new Chinese species, H. Enzyme electrophoresis was used to estimate genetic variability within and among populations of five species of the genus Leucodon (L. atrovirens, L. luteus, L. nipponicus, L. sapporensis, and L. temperatus). All of these perennial, dioecious plants are epiphytic on tree trunks and produce numerous spores that are released in winter. Gene diversity within populations (HS) was low (0.070) in L. nipponicus, which grows in disturbed habitats, and high (0.169–0.202) in the other four species, which inhabit stable environments. Gene diversity between populations relative to total diversity (GST) was low in L. temperatus (0.042) and L. luteus (0.043), suggesting that extensive gene flow occurs among populations. GST was moderate in L. sapporensis (0.104) and L. atrovirens (0.114); these values are still less than those previously reported for terrestrial mosses. Since epiphytes could disperse their spores effectively by the wind, low genetic divergence among populations may be related to the epiphytic habit of the species. On the other hand, high GST value (0.208) was found in L. nipponicus. It is probably explained by the genetic differentiation of populations by genetic drift, for the species forms geographically and ecologically isolated populations with small number of individuals. We also observed incongruity between morphological and genetic similarity among species.  相似文献

The reproductive success of alternative mating behaviours may vary within and among populations in relation to environmental factors and demographic parameters. We used behavioural and genetic data to investigate how male density affects reproductive success of territoriality and sneaking in the European bitterling (Rhodeus sericeus, Cyprinidae), a freshwater fish that spawns on the gills of living freshwater mussels. Keeping the number of spawning sites constant, we manipulated male densities in laboratory and mesocosm experiments. We showed that sneaked fertilizations were common in R. sericeus, and that they increased significantly with male density. Territorial mating was almost 17 times more successful than sneaking at the lowest male density treatment, and still 2-3 times more successful at intermediate densities. However, both behaviours conferred the same fitness pay-off at the highest male density. While the success of territorial males declined with male density, the success of individual sneaking males remained constant across densities. Notably, the capacity of territorial males to outcompete sneakers by preoviposition sperm loading was the best predictor of male reproductive success, rather than aggression, body size or postoviposition ejaculation.  相似文献

Thirteen new microsatellite loci were isolated and tested on two land snail species, Trochulus villosus and T. sericeus (Pulmonata: Hygromiidae), resulting in a set of eight polymorphic markers for each species. The expected heterozygosity was high for all loci and species (between 0.616 and 0.944).
