The distribution of immunoreactivity after applying an antibody against gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP) was studied in the brain of the collared dove (Streptopelia decaocto). In the forebrain GRP-immunoreactive (GRP-ir) cells were found in the hyperstriatum accessorium, medial and lateral parts of the neostriatum, corticoidea dorsolateralis and temporoparieto-occipitalis areas, hippocampus, pre- and parahippocampal areas and prepiriform cortex. In the brainstem, GRP-ir cells were restricted mainly to the substantia nigra and ventral tegmental nucleus. Areas with densely packed GRP-ir clusters of varicosities were the medial intermediate hyperstriatum ventrale and lateral septal nucleus; dense GRP-ir neuropil was found in the parolfactory lobe, and in the dorsal half of the intermediate and caudal archistriatum. The ventral lamina medullaris contained many GRP-ir fibers. Forebrain areas devoid of immunoreactivity were the basal nucleus, ectostriatum, rostral archistriatum, most of the paleostriatum augmentatum and the lateral bed nucleus of the stria terminalis. Moderate densities of GRP-ir elements were found in the other telencephalic areas and further in, among others, the preoptic and hypothalamic region, ventral area of Tsai, cerulean nuclei, parabrachial complex, dorsal glossopharyngeal and vagus motor nuclei and medial nuclei of the solitary complex. The observations are compared with data from the literature and the implications for the definition of specific centers within the avian brain are discussed, with emphasis on systems with a role in visceral and motivational functions and in learning.  相似文献

Aim The study of the spatial dynamics of invasive species is a key issue in invasion ecology. While mathematical models are useful for predicting the extent of population expansions, they are not suitable for measuring and characterizing spatial patterns of invasion unless the probability of detection is homogeneous across the distribution range. Here, we apply recently developed statistical approaches incorporating detection uncertainty to characterize the spatial dynamics of an invasive bird species, the Eurasian collared dove (Streptopelia decaocto). Location France. Methods Data on presence/absence of doves were recorded from 1996 to 2004 over 1045 grid cells (28 × 20 km) covering the entire country. Each grid cell included five point counts spaced along a route, which was visited twice a year, allowing for an estimation of detection probability. Each route was assigned to one of six geographical regions. We used robust design occupancy analysis to assess spatial and temporal variation in parameters related to the spatial dynamics of the species. These parameters included occupancy rate, colonization and local extinction probabilities. Our inference approach was based on the selection of the most parsimonious model among competitive models parametrized with conditional probabilities. Results The probability of detecting the presence of doves on a given route was high. However, we found evidence to incorporate detection uncertainty in inference processes about spatial dynamics, since detection probability was neither perfect (i.e. it was < 1), nor constant over space and time. Results showed a clear positive trend in occupancy rate over the study period, increasing from 55% in 1996 to 76% in 2004. In addition, occupancy rate differed among regions (range: 37–79%) and further analysis showed that colonization probability by region was positively related to occupancy rate. Finally, local extinction probability was lower than colonization probability and showed a tendency to decrease over the study period. Main conclusions Our results emphasize the importance of estimating detection probabilities in order to draw proper inferences about the spatial and temporal dynamics of the invasion pattern of the collared dove. In contrast to the perceived spatial dynamics from national atlas surveys, we provide evidence that the range of this species is currently increasing in France. Other results, such as regional specificity in colonization probabilities and time variation in local extinction are consistent with expectations from invasion and metapopulation theory.  相似文献

Pakistan is bestowed by a diversified array of wild bird species including collared doves of which the taxonomy has been least studied and reported. DNA barcoding is a geno-taxonomic tool that has been used for characterization of bird species using mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I gene (COI). This study aimed to identify taxonomic order of Pakistani collared dove using DNA barcoding. Purposely herein, we present a phylogenetic analysis of Pakistani collared dove based on 650 base pairs of COI gene sequences. Analysis of phylogenetic tree revealed that Pakistani collared dove shared a common clade with Eurasian collared dove (Streptopelia decaocto) and African collared dove (Streptopelia roseogrisea) which indicated a super-species group in Streptopelia genus. This is the first report of molecular classification of Pakistani collared dove using DNA barcoding.  相似文献

The Eurasian collared‐dove (Streptopelia decaocto) has recently experienced a population explosion in North America. It is frequently infected with West Nile virus (WNV). To test the hypothesis that the Eurasian collared‐dove is competent to transmit WNV, we experimentally infected two cohorts of doves with two different strains of WNV, CO08, and NY99, respectively. Both virus strains induced a low‐level viremia, capable of infecting a small fraction of vector mosquitoes. We suggest that the Eurasian collared‐dove plays a relatively insignificant role as an amplifying host for WNV, but it may be important where it is locally abundant.  相似文献

The preoptic area of the hypothalamus is a key area that produces gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH). In birds, the chicken GnRH-I-form neurons are responsible for the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal system, which controls reproduction. In the ring dove, electrolytic lesion in the adult hypothalamus induces neurogenesis. In this study, we determined whether adult neurogenesis is involved in repairing GnRH neurons, specifically by generating newborn cells exhibiting GnRH-I immunoreactive properties. We selectively applied electrolytic lesions to three different regions of the diencephalon, including the preoptic area, which contains GnRH-I neurons, and identified new cells (BrdU-positive cells) that co-labeled with GnRH-I-immunoreactive cells. The BrdU+/GnRH+ double labeled cells were then confirmed with confocal laser analysis. In brains of both male and female ring doves we found new neurons at the lesion site of the preoptic region that were GnRH-I immunoreactive. However, the total number of GnRH neurons in the lesioned brains was less than that of sham-lesioned brains. When two other regions of the diencephalon that contain GnRH-I neurons were damaged, no recruitment of new GnRH-I neurons was detected. The rate of neurogenesis depends on the bird's reproductive phase when the lesion was applied. We found BrdU+/GnRH+ double-labeled cells almost exclusively during the pre-laying phase when birds are engaged in active courtship that leads to egg laying. Our observations suggest that recruitment of GnRH immunoreactive new neurons is restricted to the hypothalamic region and is sensitive to the reproductive stage of the birds.  相似文献

Responding of individuals outside the conspecific range hasbeen largely explained by biases in sensory or cognitive systemstoward particular traits or trait values. More recently, ithas been shown that such responses might occur if individualsstill respond to signal traits that have been lost over time. However, empirical evidence remains scarce. We report a casesupporting the latter mechanism. Phylogenetic analysis suggeststhat the collared dove, Streptopelia decaocto, had lost thetrilled vocalization present in most congeneric taxa. We testedwhether males retained the ability to respond to these trillsin the context of territory defense. We synthesized trilledsongs by inserting trills from the sister species S. roseogriseainto S. decaocto songs. We show that trilled songs yielded higherresponses than did natural conspecific songs, and that the intensityof the response depended on the number of trilled elements. We also show that trilled songs elicited as strong reactionsas frequency modulated coos, which are stronger releasers ofterritorial response than are nonmodulated coos, but are notproduced by every males. Additional tests suggest that the frequencypattern is the most important feature of the trill used by males. However, it is still unknown whether reactions to trilled andfrequency modulated coos have the same perceptual basis. Toour knowledge, this study is the first report of a stronglydeviating signal that is still effective in vocal intrasexualcommunication in birds.  相似文献

Serum proteins of the collared peccary (Tayassu tajacu) were analyzed by agarose gel electrophoresis for wild adult males and females, nursing young, and reproductively-active females in captivity. Electrophoretic profiles of the adult peccary showed at least six distinct protein bands corresponding to the fractions: albumin, alpha-1, alpha-2, beta-1, beta-2, and gamma globulin. Globulin fractions of the peccary had different mobilities from the domestic swine. The only sexual dimorphisms were associated with the beta globulin:albumin ratio and the albumin:globulin ratio. Ingestion of colostrum in 1-day-old neonates was marked by a very large increase in gamma globulins. The only significant difference between pregnant and lactating females was in the alpha globulin:beta globulin ratio. Lactating females had higher concentrations of alpha-2 globulin than non-pregnant females.  相似文献

We identified 11 polymorphic microsatellite loci in collared lizards (Crotaphytus collaris). Polymorphism assessment in 512 individuals from 52 populations sampled across much of the species distribution revealed a fairly high degree of genetic diversity (six to 20 alleles per locus) and a wide range of average expected heterozygosity values (0.143–0.530). We found no evidence for linkage, very few deviations from HW expectation (two of 572 possible population/locus analyses) and thus no evidence for null alleles. There was a tendency for reduced polymorphism towards the northern periphery.  相似文献

In the male quail forebrain, aromatase-immunoreactive (ARO-ir) elements are clustered within the sexually dimorphic medial preoptic nucleus (POM), nucleus striae terminalis (nST), nucleus accumbens (nAc), and ventromedial and tuberal hypothalamus. These ARO-ir cells are sensitive to testosterone and its metabolites: Their number and size increase after exposure to these steroids. The POM and lateral septum are also characterized by a dense vasotocinergic innervation that is also sensitive to testosterone. We analyzed here the anatomical relationships between ARO-ir elements and VT-ir fibers in the quail prosencephalon. Sequential staining for vasotocin, aromatase, or vasotocin plus aromatase was performed on adjacent 30-μm-thick cryostat sections. High concentrations of thin VT-ir fibers were observed within the POM, nST, lateral septum, periventricular mesencephalic central gray, and ventromedial and tuberal hypothalamus. There was a close correspondence between the extension of the ARO-ir cells and of VT-ir fibers. In double-labeled sections, all clusters of ARO-ir cells with the exception of those located in the nAc were embedded in a dense network of VT-ir fibers. Many of the VT-ir terminals appeared to end in the neuropile surrounding ARO-ir elements rather than directly on their cell bodies. This study supports the idea that the testosterone-dependent aromatase system is directly innervated by a testosterone-dependent peptidergic system. Aromatase-containing cells could therefore be modulated by steroids both directly and indirectly through the vasotocin system. Alternatively, this neuroanatomical arrangement may mediate the control of vasotocin synthesis or release by steroids. Functional studies demonstrate that both aromatase and vasotocin affect reproductive behavior in quail, and the present data provide anatomical support for the integration of these effects. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Onset of sexual maturation was determined in weanling male collared lemmings exposed to one of three experimental regimens of different photoperiods before and after weaning. Animals gestated in photoperiods of either 16 h light:8 h dark or 8 h light:16 h dark. Those from 16 h light:8 h dark were transferred at 19 days of age to either 20 h light:4 h dark or 8 h light:16 h dark; those gestated under 8 h light: 16 h dark remained in that photoperiod throughout the experiment. After exposure for 15, 20, 25 or 30 days to the postweaning photoperiod, animals were killed and the following parameters assessed: body weight, testes weight, seminal vesicle weight, the presence or absence of epididymal spermatozoa and serum concentrations of prolactin, testosterone and corticosterone. All parameters except serum testosterone were significantly influenced by photoperiod. Animals housed under 8 h light:16 h dark had significantly greater body weights than those housed under 20 h light:4 h dark, a response that differs from that reported for other arvicoline rodents. The group gestated on 16 h light:8 h dark and transferred on day 19 to 8 h light:16 h dark had lower testes and seminal vesicle weights than the other two groups, and mature spermatozoa in the epididymides appeared 5 days later than in the 20 h light:4 h dark group. Serum prolactin was largely undetectable in animals from both 8 h light:16 h dark groups, but all males housed in 20 h light:4 h dark had 2.0-15.0 ng prolactin ml-1. Concentration of serum corticosterone was higher in animals weaned into long photoperiod, and decreased with age. These data indicate that weanling male D. groenlandicus are reproductively photoresponsive, but use a decrease in photoperiod, not static short-photoperiod exposure, to alter the rate of development. Prolactin was largely undetectable in animals exposed to short photoperiod, indicating that high concentrations of this hormone are not important for maturation. Low prolactin concentrations in animals in short photoperiods may mediate the annual moult to white pelage. The short-photoperiod-mediated decrease in corticosterone may play a role in seasonal changes in body weight and composition.  相似文献

Summary The epithelial framework of the human thymus has been studied in parallel by immunohistochemical methods at the light- and electron-microscopic levels. Different monoclonal antibodies were used, reacting with components of the major histocompatibility complex, keratins, thymic hormones and other as yet antigenically undefined substances, which show specific immunoreactivities with human thymus epithelial cells. The electron-microscopic immunocytochemical observations clearly confirm microtopographical differences of epithelial cells not only between the thymic cortex and medulla, but also within the cortex itself. At least four subtypes of epithelial cells could be distinguished: 1) the cortical surface epithelium; 2) the main cortical epithelial cells and thymic nurse cells; 3) the medullary epithelial cells; and 4) the epithelial cells of Hassall's corpuscles. The various epithelial cell types of the thymus display several common features like tonofilaments, desmosomes and some surface antigens as demonstrated by anti-KiM3. In other respects, however, they differ from each other. The cortical subtype of thymic epithelial cells including the thymic nurse cells shows a distinct pattern of surface antigens reacting positively with antibodies against HLA-DR (anti-HLA-DR) and anti-21A62E. Electron-microscopic immunocytochemistry with these antibodies clearly reveals a surface labeling and a narrow contact to cortical thymocytes particularly in the peripheral cortical regions. An alternative staining pattern is realized by antibodies to some antigens associated with other subtypes of thymic epithelial cells. Medullary epithelial cells as well as the cortical surface epithelium react likewise positively with antibodies to special surface antigens (anti-Ep-1), to special epitopes of cytokeratin (anti-IV/82), and to thymic hormones (anti-FTS). The functional significance of distinct microenvironments within the thymus provided by different epithelial cells is discussed in view of the maturation of T-precursor cells.Glossary of Abbreviations Anti-X anti-X antibody - APUD-cells amine precursor uptake and decarboxylation (gastro-intestinal endocrine cells) - DAB diamino-benzidine - DMSO dimethyl sulfoxide - FTS facteur thymique sérique - HLA-A, B, C human leucocyte antigen, A, B, C-region related - HLA-DR human leucocyte antigen, D-region related - IDC interdigitating cell - MHC major histocompatibility gene complex - PBS phosphate-buffered saline - TNC thymic nurse cell This investigation was supported by grants from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, and its Sonderforschungsbereich 111Fellow of the Alexander von Humbold-Stiftung, Institute of Pathology, University of Würzburg, Federal Republic of GermanyThe authors appreciate the contribution of human thymus tissue from Professor Alexander Bernhard, Abteilung kardiovasculäre Chirurgie der Universität Kiel; the gift of monoclonal antibodies from Dr. M.J.D. The roles of different forebrain structures in stages of memory formation were investigated by injecting agents into either the left medial hyperstriatum ventrale (MHV) or right lateral neostriatum (LNS) close to the time of one-trial taste-avoidance training. Withl-glutamate injected into either the left MHV or right LNS 5 minutes pretraining, retention was good 1 minute posttraining but significantly impaired at 5 minutes and each subsequent time point. With emetine injected into either area, retention was still good 60 minutes posttraining but significantly impaired at 90 minutes. With ouabain, retention declined more slowly following injection into the right LNS (at 45 minutes) compared to injection in the left MHV (at 30 minutes). A second experiment confirmed the regional difference in amnesia development produced by ouabain. These results indicate that the duration of short-term memory is longer following inhibition of intermediate-term memory (ITM) in the right LNS, compared to inhibition of ITM in the left MHV.Special Issue dedicated to Prof. Holger Hydén.  相似文献

A. H. Macpherson suggested that much of the current geographic diversity in Canadian Arctic mammals resulted from isolation in refugia during the Wisconsin glacial stage. This study evaluates the refugium hypothesis, insofar as it applies to Nearctic Dicrostonyx , by means of a statistical analysis of geographic variation in 13 skull characters. Overall, geographic variation among samples is not significant, although D. hudsonius and D. unalascensis are geographically and morphologically distinct. Some variation in skull shape is correlated with winter temperature. Partitioning tests on other measures of shape variation indicate some discontinuities consistent with the refugial hypothesis. Discrete samples reflect possible refugial populations in northern North America, Eastern Beringia and two southern periglacial refugia, one in eastern North America and at least one in western North America.  相似文献

The effect of photoperiod on sexual function and growth in weanling male and female collared lemmings (Dicrostonyx groenlandicus) was studied. Males and females maintained in 6 hr light:18 hr dark after weaning were larger at the end of 70 days than their siblings kept in 20L:4D. Males in 6L:18D were longer and overall body growth was greater. Males in 6L:18D had heavier adrenals but there were no differences in the weights of testes, preputial glands or seminal vesicles or in the mean testosterone levels of the two groups. Females in 6L:18D had heavier preputial glands than the 20L:4D females. There were no differences between the two groups in uterine, ovarian or adrenal weights or in the number or mean size of atretic or healthy Graafian follicles. Adult males kept in 6L:18D increased more in body weight than those in 20L:4D, but there was no detectable influence of the short photoperiod on reproductive function.  相似文献

The immunohistochemical characteristics of brush cells in the laryngeal mucosa were examined using immunohistochemistry for various immunohistochemical cell markers including villin at the light and electron microscopic levels. Cells that were immunoreactive to villin were barrel-shaped with thick cytoplasmic processes extending toward the lumen of the laryngeal cavity. Immunoelectron microscopic observations revealed thick and short microvilli with long rootlets of microfilaments. Numerous small clear vesicles and small finger-like cytoplasmic processes were observed in the apical process and lateral membrane, respectively. Double immunofluorescence showed villin-immunoreactive cells were not immunoreactive for the markers of solitary chemosensory cells, GNAT3 and phospholipase C, β2-subunit (PLCβ2), or for that of neuroendocrine cells, synaptosome-associated protein 25kD. Furthermore, immunoreactivities for cytokeratin 18 (CK18) and doublecortin like-kinase 1 in the perinuclear cytoplasm of villin-immunoreactive cells. However, some CK18-immunoreactive cells were immunoreactive to GNAT3 but not to villin. Regarding sensory innervation, only a few intraepithelial nerve endings with P2X3, SP, or CGRP immunoreactivity attached to villin-immunoreactive cells. In the present study, brush cells in the rat laryngeal mucosa were classified by immunoreactivity for villin, and were independent of other non-ciliated epithelial cells such as solitary chemosensory cells and neuroendocrine cells.  相似文献

Sixty-three Eurasian collared-doves (ECDs) (Streptopelia decaocto) from Florida were examined for parasitic helminths from June to December 2001. Nine species of helminths were identified (5 nematodes, 2 cestodes, and 2 trematodes). The most prevalent helminths were Ascaridia columbae (73.0%), Fuhrmannetta crassula (28.6%), Ornithostrongylus quadriradiatus (12.7%), and Bruscapillaria obsignata (11.1%). The helminths with the greatest mean intensity were Tanaisia bragai (13.5), A. columbae (9.3), and O. quadriradiatus (7.1). In Florida, the mean intensity of A. columbae in ECDs (9.3) was similar to that found in white-winged doves (Zenaida asiatica) (9.1) (P = 0.461), and both the intensities were significantly higher than that in the native mourning doves (Zenaida macroura) (3.7) (P = 0.001 and 0.005, respectively). Fuhrmannetta crassula is reported for the first time in columbids from Florida.  相似文献
