Summary The fine structure of the nervous system of lower fresh-water Turbellaria was investigated. This system consists of a brain, short nerve trunks and a network of subepithelial nerve cells. The brain structure shows ganglion cells and their proccesses, forming a neuropil. The ganglion cells are most probably unipolar. The perikaryon contains numerous ribosomes, few mitochondria, and golgi complexes. Thus it corresponds structurally to neuroblasts of higher animals. The neurites contain mitochondria, neurotubules, and empty or dense core vesicles. All (inStenostomum sp.) or some of the nerve cells (inCatenula sp.) have neurosecretory vesicles.  相似文献

The distribution and ultrastructure of sensory nerve endings were investigated in the deep lateral elbow region of the rat. Three zones of distribution of mechanoreceptors were distinguished, each in relation to the functional architecture of the connective and muscular tissue in that area: (1) a zone with muscle spindles, Golgi tendon organs, free nerve endings and single small lamellated corpuscles ('muscle-tendon spectrum'), situated in the middle third of the supinator muscle and its superficial aponeurosis; (2) a zone with small lamellated corpuscles and free nerve endings, situated pericapsularly to the humeroradial joint capsule ('shearing spectrum'): this moderately dense, irregular connective tissue is covered by the proximal continuation of the supinator's aponeurosis, and muscle fibers insert from beneath this aponeurosis, which displays, as a part of the joint capsule, a strong collagenous tissue plate; (3) a zone with only free nerve endings within the tendon-like, most proximal part of the supinator's aponeurosis, inserting into the periosteal layer of the lateral humeral epicondyle ('endotenonial spectrum'): it is part of the joint capsule. The ultrastructure of these sensory endings is described and the distribution pattern of the mechanoreceptors observed is discussed in relation to the classification into 'muscle receptors' and 'joint receptors'.  相似文献

Summary Three types of setae were found on the antenna of workers of C. formosanus. Sensilla basiconica function as chemoreceptors. They are non-socketed, with fixed plate base, thin walled, and perforated. Pore tubules are contained within the cuticular pores of s. basiconica. The pore tubules have direct contact with the dendritic branches within the sensilla. The other sensilla are tactile mechanoreceptors. The longest setae (sensilla trichodea) are thick walled, socketed, mononeuronic, and non-perforated. The shorter mechanoreceptors (sensilla chaetica) have the same characteristics as s. trichodea, exept that they are sometimes dineuronic. The numbers and distribution of the sensilla were established.Supported by the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, University of Wisconsin, Madison, and in part by the M.U.C.I.A. program, the National Science Foundation Grant No. 36700, and the U.S.D.A., Forest Service Cooperative Project 12-13. Summary The ultrastructure of the pinealocytes of the golden mole (Amblysomus hottentotus), a blind subterranean mammal living in complete darkness, was examined and compared with that of pinealocytes of other mammals. On the basis of the presence of granular vesicles and glycogen granules, only one population of pinealocytes was found. Large mitochondria, ribosomes, lipid inclusions and scarce lysosomes were observed in the perikaryon. Numerous glycogen granules, often forming typical accumulations, were frequently found to be associated with typical vacuoles. An extraordinary large number of granular vesicles is characteristic of the golden mole pinealocyte. Phenomena of excretion of compound(s) stored in the granular vesicles were identified. Morphologically this is characterized by dissociation of its granular core in situ while its limiting membrane is preserved. The physiological significance of the secretory process characterized by the formation of these granular vesicles is discussed.A portion of these observations were presented at the International Symposium on the Pineal Gland, Jerusalem, Israel, November 14–17, 1977  相似文献

The cationic form of beta-galactosidase (EC 3.2.1.23) from the germinating seeds of Vigna sinensis has been separated from its other isoforms by DEAE-cellulose (DE-52) column chromatography and further purified by gel filtration and affinity chromatography. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of the purified enzyme imparted a single protein band. The molecular mass of the enzyme as determined by Sephadex G-150 gel filtration is 58,800 Da. The optimum temperature and the optimum pH are 60 degrees C and 4.5, respectively. Most of the metal ions tested were inhibitory to the enzyme activity. The enzyme has Km for p-nitrophenyl beta-D-galactoside and o-nitrophenyl beta-D-galactoside of 0.56 and 2.0 mM, respectively. The Ki values of galactose and lactose are 2.4 and 70.0 mM, respectively. The energy of activation of PNPG for the enzyme is 10.3 kcal/mol.  相似文献

We report the identification of four residual stations for Trifolium michelianum Savi (Fabaceae) in Sicily, whereas the species was documented to be extinct at the Gorgo Cerro station (western Sicily), the only locality previously reported in the literature. In addition to an update on the distribution of the species, a survey on the new Sicilian populations led to their biological, ecological and phytosociological characterization, as well as to an assessment of the risk factors. The species, here relegated to the limit of its distribution area, occurs in particularly sensitive and vulnerable environments, such as the “Mediterranean temporary ponds”, considered “priority” by the Council Directive 92/43/EEC. Moreover, a new Sicilian association (Trifolio michelianiGlycerietumspicatae ass. nova), framed in the alliance Glycerio-Sparganion (class Phragmito-Magnocaricetea), is described.  相似文献

The ontogenesis and structural characteristics of the seminal vesicles in Clarias gariepinus (sharptooth catfish) were studied by light and electron microscopy and are described in detail. The seminal vesicles, beginning as simple protrusions from the vas efferentia, becomes more complex with age. Their distal ends become fingerlike and the bases form palm-like extensions. Juvenile male organs do not reveal any signs of seminal vesicles although spermatogenic tissue is already well delineated. The developing gonads contain clusters of large cells, close to the sperm duct and cysts of the testis, from which seminal vesicles are formed. Secretory epithelium lines the tubules of the seminal vesicles and becomes columnar as the tissue matures. Electron micro-graphs of these epithelial cells reveal two types of cells: opaque cells and cells with very vacuolized cytoplasm. Dense pinocytotic vesicles are present between the membranes of neighbouring seminal tubules and apical cell membranes facing the lumen. Maturation and onset of secretion by the secretory cells is accompanied by morphological changes. Protruding cylindrical cells become shortened, modified to cuboidal, rounded cells that send tubular extensions into the lumen. In the final stage of differentiation, only connective tissue membranes supporting the tubule walls remain intact. At the points of contact between the testis, seminal vesicles, and sperm duct, the epithelia of these organs often become confluent. The distal parts of the seminal vesicles, rarely contain sperm; during spawning sperm accumulated in the proximal tubules of the vesicles. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The structure of mechanoreceptors at the base of labeilar taste hairs of the blowfly Phaenicia serricata were examined in stimulated and unstimulated conditions (i.e. with the hair bent or unbent). Physiological recordings from the mechanoreceptor showed that the receptors responded when the hair is bent dorsally or ventrally and when the hair is bent at extreme angles. These conditions are the same as those placed on hairs in the anatomical studies. Bending the hair toward the ventral labellar surface caused the hair base to compress and indent the tubular body and its surrounding membrane and sheath at the distal end of the mechanoreceptor dendrite. In compressed tubular bodies, microtubules oriented longitudinally were bent and separated a greater distance from each other. Separation as much as 70 nm was observed in compressed tubular bodies as compared with a maximum of 26 nm between microtubules in tubular bodies of unbent hairs. The dense amorphous material between microtubules of compressed tubular bodies formed prominent bridges 18 nm thick connecting the microtubules at intervals of 48–74 nm. Thin 10 nm filaments were also evident in the spaces between microtubules. When the hair was bent toward the proximal end of the proboscis, the tip of the tubular body was bent about 15 °. The tubular body appears to function as a firm but resilient structure over which the dendritic membrane can be stretched during mechanostimulation. Comparison of morphology of bent and unbent hairs suggests a means by which mechanical force from the movement of the hair is transferred to the receptors by structures in the hair socket region. No differences were found in ciliary structures of stimulated and unstimulated receptors.  相似文献

Summary The separation and properties of a new immunopotentiator, Benincasa cerifera mitogen (BCM) fraction, were investigated. BCM fraction was separated from hot water extract of the seed of Benincasa cerifera Savi (Tohgashi) by gel filtration using Sepharose 4B. BCM fraction is a heteropolymer consisting of uronic acid, neutral sugars, protein, and phosphorus. The proliferation and differentiation of murine B cells were markedly stimulated by BCM fraction. The in vitro development of peritoneal macrophages into antitumor macrophages was also activated by the addition of BCM fraction to cultures. BCM fraction augmented the IgM and IgG antibody responses against sheep erythrocytes (SRBC) and the induction of delayed-type footpad reaction against SRBC. The antitumor activity of BCM fraction was observed in terms of prolongation of the survival period of mice bearing Meth A fibrosarcoma. After hydrolysis with 1% acetic acid at 100° C for 4 h, marked mitogenic activity was found in a precipitate composed of 29% neutral sugars, 50% uronic acid, 1% protein, and 0.1% phosphorus. The precipitate did not contain detectable amino sugar. The possibility that the biological activities of BCM fraction may be due to contamination by bacterial lipopoly-saccharide was ruled out on the basis of the results of chemical analysis and of marked mitogenicity noted in C3H/HeJ spleen cell cultures. Abbreviations used: BCM, Benincasa cerifera mitogen; SRBC, sheep erythrocytes; PFC, plaque-forming cells; TNP-HRBC, trinitrophenylated horse erythrocytes; PBA, polyclonal B-cell activation; SI, stimulation index  相似文献

Sperm structure and ultrastructure in the Hymenoptera (Insecta)   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
A light and electron microscopical survey of spermatozoan gross morphology and ultrastructure in the Hymenoptera is presented. Details are provided for the first time for members of the families Xyelidae, Argidae, Tenthredinidae, Diprionidae, Cephidae, Figitidae, Proctotrupidae, Diaprii- dae, Heloridae, Eurytomidae, Leucospidae, Perilampidae, Torymidae, Braconidae, Dryinidae, Sphecidae, Pompilidae and Vespidae. Spermatozoan length ranged from 8 μ m in some Braconidae to 500 μm in one chalcidoid. Considerable variation in gross morphology and ultrastructure were observed between taxa. Several phylogenetically informative characters were noted. Very small spermatozoa characterized most of the non-cyclostome subfamilies of Braconidae; spirally twisted axoneme and mitochondrial derivatives occur in the Eulophidae, Eurytomidae and Pteromalidae; spermatozoa with virtually indistinguishable head (nucleus and acrosome) regions characterized the Vespinae and Polistinae. The presence of well-developed spermatodesmata in the vas deferens and seminal vesicle characterize the Symphyta and were largely absent from other groups though they are occasionally present in some bees.  相似文献

The homology of pharynges within the mostly pharynx-less Acoela has been a matter of discussion for decades. Here, we analyze the pharynges of three members of the Solenofilomorphidae, Myopea sp. and two species of the genus Solenofilomorpha, by means of light and transmission electron microscopy. Special focus is placed on the ultrastructure of the pharyngeal musculature, epidermis surrounding the mouth, pharyngeal epithelium, and junction with the digestive parenchyma. The main goal of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of certain characters for broader comparisons within the Acoela. Among the three species, characters relating to position of the mouth, presence and elaboration of sphincter muscles, presence of pharyngeal glands, and ultrastructure of epitheliosomes proved to be variously species- and genus-specific. The arrangement of pharyngeal muscles and their connection with body wall musculature, ultrastructure of receptor cells, and morphology of a nonciliated glandular region in the posterior pharynx, in contrast, appear to be characteristic of the family Solenofilomorphidae and thus of predominant interest for comparisons with other acoel families.  相似文献

Summary Cowpea responded well to phosphorus and P application increased green-fodder production and P uptake. With respect to green-fodder production, the rock phosphate was found to be 50–55% as effective as superphosphate. Phosphorus when applied at 50 kg P2O5/ha as superphosphate or rock phosphate almost doubled the P uptake by the summer-season crop of cowpea as compared to no phosphorus control. The residual effect did not differ significantly on succeeding rainy-season crop of cowpea. Application of starter N increased the total green-fodder yield of two crops by 38 q/ha. re]19750710  相似文献

The structure of the human caput epididymidis was examined by gross morphological and light and electron microscopic techniques. There were at least seven types of tubules, each characterized by a different epithelium. These tubules were connected with one another by at least eight types of junctions to form a network. Most of the caput epididymidis was composed of efferent ducts. Within these, five types of tubules, each with a different ciliated epithelium, were found in different regions; and four types of junctions between the efferent ducts and the epididymal tubule were observed. The efferent ducts left the testis, initially as parallel straight tubules containing both ciliated and non-ciliated cells in an epithelium of irregular height. Each efferent duct then coiled tortuously into lobules that folded over one another. These efferent ducts then branched out as thin tubules to join a network of dark tubules which were lined by a regular epithelium containing prominently vacuolated, non-ciliated cells. These tubules anastomosed via common cavities characterized by a ciliated cuboidal epithelium and sometimes joined tubules exhibiting a non-vacuolated ciliated epithelium. The latter, as well as typical efferent ducts, made connection with the epididymis proper in both end-to-end and end-to-side junctions. In the more distal junctions with the epididymis, the efferent ducts joined to a transitional epididymal ductule before joining to the side of the epididymis proper. Post-junctional epithelia in the beginning of the epididymis occasionally contained patches of cells characteristic of efferent ducts. Tall cells with long stereocilia constituted a discontinuous "initial segment"-like region of the epididymis. This is the most detailed study so far of the epithelia and the tubule organization in the caput epididymidis of any species, and most of the results are reported for the first time for the human. Although the pattern of the tubule network resembles that of some domestic species, the rich variety of epithelia has not been appreciated before.  相似文献
