In this conchometric study, the systematics and distribution of the freshwater gastropod Melanopsis in the Levant are described. Of the ten species found, three are widespread, two have narrow distributions and five are known only from their type locality. Five smooth‐shelled species are recognized (buccinoidea, ammonis, dircaena, khabourensis and meiostoma). Within M. buccinoidea, Jordan Valley populations may belong to a separate subspecies. M. ammonis is clearly differentiated from buccinoidea of the nearby Jordan Valley, but less so from buccinoidea of more distant sites; differences between ammonis and meiostoma are significant but not diagnostic. Five species have ribbed shells. Within costata, four subspecies are recognized (in the northern Orontes, upper Jordan, Sea of Galilee, and in southernmost parts of the Levant). Throughout the Levant, M. buccinoidea frequently hybridizes with M. costata and fossil evidence suggests that these species have been hybridizing for the last 1.5 Myr. M. saulcyi differs from M. costata in its narrower shell and shorter, bumpier ribs and frequently hybridizes with M. buccinoidea throughout the Levant. Specimens from Homs differ from those of the Jordan Valley in their higher figurativity index, fewer ribs and lower rib density. M. germaini differs from M. costata in its more numerous ribs, M. pachya in its shorter ribs, and M. infracincta in its bumpy shell in which each rib has huge tubercles, with a pronounced ridge flanking the columella. Our conclusion that there are ten species in the Levant differs from previous studies that suggested only two subspecies of one species (or superspecies). This difference could stem from (1) our use of nonstandard as well as standard conchometrics, (2) a reappraisal of the importance of the shell vs. the radula in intrageneric systematics, and (3) differences of opinion on the subspecies concept. © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2005, 144 , 229?260.  相似文献

Pseudosuccinea columella and Radix natalensis live in the same habitat in Egypt and are important intermediate hosts of Fasciola hepatica and F. gigantica. Our study aimed to characterise both snail species using molecular analysis and shell measurements. The ranges of morphometric parameters overlapped in the two lymnaeids, indicating that they do not clearly differentiate the two species. PCR-sequence analysis of the nuclear ribosomal small subunit rRNA and the polymorphic mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (CO1) genes were used to determine the genetic identity and the potential diversity of the snails. Little intrasequence variations were detected in the sequences of both gene loci, indicating the potential homogeneity of lymnaeid populations in Egypt. Generated sequences of the mitochondrial CO1 gene locus for R. natalensis showed obvious heterogeneity compared to other sequences in GenBank. Molecular characterisation of these lymnaeids might help to understand the snails’ biodiversity in a bid to control these populations and their related diseases.  相似文献

Marstonia comalensis, a poorly known nymphophiline gastropod (originally described from Comal Creek, Texas) that has often been confused with Cincinnatia integra, is re-described and the generic placement of this species, which was recently allocated to Marstonia based on unpublished evidence, is confirmed by anatomical study. Marstonia comalensis is a large congener having an ovate-conic, openly umbilicate shell and penis having a short filament and oblique, squarish lobe bearing a narrow gland along its distal edge. It is well differentiated morphologically from congeners having similar shells and penes and is also genetically divergent relative to those congeners that have been sequenced (mtCOI divergence 3.0-8.5%). A Bayesian analysis of a small COI dataset resolved Marstonia comalensis in a poorly supported sub-clade together with Marstonia hershleri, Marstonia lustrica and Marstonia pachyta. The predominantly new records presented herein indicate that Marstonia comalensis was historically distributed in the upper portions of the Brazos, Colorado, Guadalupe and Nueces River basins, south-central Texas. The species has been live collected at only 12 localities and only two of these have been re-visited since 1993. These data suggest that the conservation status of this snail, which has a critically imperiled (G1) NatureServe ranking and was recently proposed for federal listing, needs to be re-assessed.  相似文献

The Glacidorbidae, a family restricted to the Gondwanan realm (Tasmania, southeastern and southwestern Australia, and southern Argentina and Chile), previously included five genera with 20 identified species; 19 of them are Australian, with one genus and species, Gondwanorbis magallanicus (Meier-Brook & Smith, 1976 Meier-Brook, K. & Smith, B.J. (1976) Glacidorbis Iredale, 1943, a genus of freshwater prosobranchs with a Tasmanian-Southeast Australian-South Andean distribution. A new aberrant species of the planorbid genus Gyraulus, Gyraulus luguhuensis n. sp., is described from Lake Lugu (Lugu-hu, in Chinese), Southwest China. The generic assignment with Gyraulus is based on features of the genital anatomy that are characteristic for members of that genus, in particular the presence of a chitinized penial stylet. Gyraulus luguhuensis n. sp. differs from most other congeners by its large, thick shell with an elevated spire. Similarly, aberrant shells are known from congeners in other Ancient Lakes worldwide indicating a potentially convergent evolution of shell characteristics in exclusively lacustrine species. Gyraulus luguhuensis differs from other lacustrine Gyraulus species with similarly large shells in having a sub-terminal penis pore and an unkeeled shell.  相似文献

Six microsatellite loci were isolated and characterized in Bulinus globosus, a freshwater snail with a wide distribution throughout sub‐Saharan Africa. Bulinus globosus is an intermediate host of Schistosoma haematobium, the causative agent of human urinary schistosomiasis. Microsatellites were tested using 32 snails from four populations collected from Pemba and Unguja islands of Zanzibar. The microsatellite loci displayed relatively low levels of variation, with between two and five alleles per locus. FST estimates indicate that gene flow is low, as has previously been suggested for other species of Bulinus.  相似文献

The Paiva's blenny Lupinoblennius paivai is redescribed and its range redefined along the Brazilian coast. It differs from its congeners by the presence of three cephalic pores between the dorsal‐fin base and lateral line, dorsal‐fin elements XII, 12, anal‐fin elements II, 16, pectoral‐fin rays 14 and 10 + 20 vertebrae. It is here reported from Amazon estuaries (Marajó and Mosqueiro islands, Pará State), increasing its range by c. 3000 km. Lupinoblennius paivai is one of the few blenniid species able to tolerate low salinities. New data about its meristics and morphometrics are presented, as well as a new habitat type.  相似文献

Eostrobilopshumicolus Páll-Gergely & Hunyadi, sp. n. is described from Guangxi Province, China. It is characterized by the combination of a small shell (diameter: 2.3–2.4 mm), strongly ribbed dorsal surface, an infraparietal lamella not reaching the callus, and long basal folds. The new species is found approximately 500 and 800 km from the two nearest species Eostrobilopsinfrequens (northern Vietnam), and Eostrobilopsdiodontina (Hunan, China), respectively. A checklist of extant Eostrobilops Pilsbry, 1927 and Enteroplax Gude, 1899 species is provided. Enteroplaxyaeyamensis Habe & Chinen, 1974, Enteroplaxkanjiokuboi Minato & Tada, 1992 and Enteroplaxtaiwanica Minato & Tada, 1992 are moved to the genus Eostrobilops because of the lack of an elevated parietal callus and a peripheral thread. The morphological definition of taxa has proved difficult within the Bulinus forskalii group, which includes intermediate hosts of medically important Schistosoma species in West Africa. Although B. forskalii and B. senegalensis transmit different schistosome species they are conchologically similar and their distributions overlap. Randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) allows differentiation of sibling species in the genus Bulinus, but RAPDs are difficult to standardize, impairing their value as a taxonomic tool. Hence, RAPD products diagnostic for either B. senegalensis or B. forskalii from West Africa were cloned, sequenced and a panel of species-specific primers designed. Sequencing of RAPD products identified a homology in two apparently independent RAPD loci, a problem where RAPDs are indiscriminately scored for phylogenetic analyses. Specificity of primers was confirmed by widespread sampling throughout each species' range. This approach produced a simple, robust, unambiguous PCR-based species identification strategy for this difficult group.  相似文献

Isolated closed basins provide a natural laboratory to study the differentiation among wild populations. Here we examined the phylogenetic relationships of the Southern Altiplano populations of Biomphalaria, a genus with medical importance, using nuclear (ITS1, ITS2) and mitochondrial (16S) ribosomal gene markers and a species of Helisoma as outgroup. Phylogenetic trees based on separate and combined analyses show that these populations form a particular lineage within Biomphalaria along with Biomphalaria peregrina (d'Orbigny, 1835) and Biomphalaria oligoza Paraense, 1974. The origin of this clade was estimated to have occurred in the middle Pleistocene. Molecular analyses showed that the nominal species Biomphalaria crequii ( Courty, 1907 ) from the Salar de Ascotán and Biomphalaria costata (Biese, 1951) from the Salar de Carcote, previously synonymized with Biomphalaria andecola (d'Orbigny, 1835) and B. peregrina, respectively, are distinct taxa. Molecular data did not resolve the relationship of Biomphalaria aymara Valdovinos & Stuardo, 1991 from the Isluga swamps to other Biomphalaria species, but confirm that the populations from the Lauca and Huasco basins may represent a distinct undescribed species of Biomphalaria from the Southern Altiplano. ABSTRACT

The planorbid species that were described by Shuichi (Syuiti) Mori from Japan have long been enigmatic and their taxonomy has been highly confused. This situation is also an impediment to action for the conservation of Japanese planorbids which are one of the most threatened freshwater snail groups in the country. Based on our examination of Shuichi Mori’s collection stored in the Kyoto University Museum, type materials of the taxa described by him are re-illustrated and re-examined for the first time. Our examination suggested that Gyraulus amplificatus (Mori, 1938) is not a morphological form of Gyraulus biwaensis but a distinct species. Gyraulus pulcher (Mori, 1938) can be regarded as a junior synonym of Gyraulus chinensis.  相似文献

The genus Potamolithus (Gastropoda: Tateidae) is endemic to South America where it is distributed mainly in the Ribeira, Itajaí-açú and Jacuhy Rivers in southern Brazil and the Uruguay River, part of the Paraná and Río de la Plata drainage systems. An exception to the pattern of distribution is Potamolithus valchetensis Miquel, 1998, which is endemic to the Valcheta Stream, Somuncurá Plateau, Patagonia, Argentina. Here we provide a review of Potamolithus from this plateau based on new samples and review of material deposited in collections. A new species, Potamolithus elenae, is named. The shell, head-foot, penis, pallial organs and radula are described. Differences between the new species and P. valchetensis include details in the shell, radula, body pigmentation and penis. A phylogeny using mitochondrial gene cytochrome c oxidase subunit I is provided which shows that Potamolithus is related to species in New Caledonia (Australasia), suggesting that the Tateidae has a Gondwanan distribution.  相似文献

Aylacostoma Spix, 1827, contains species that are the subject of focused conservation efforts under the auspices of the ‘Aylacostoma Project’, the only ex situ conservation programme for freshwater gastropods in South America. Two species from the High Paraná River (Argentina–Paraguay) are included in this programme (Aylacostoma chloroticum Hylton Scott, 1954 and Aylacostoma brunneum Vogler & Peso, 2014), as their habitats have disappeared as a consequence of the filling of the Yacyretá Reservoir in the 1990s. At present, A. chloroticum is restricted to only one known wild population in a small and fragile habitat, and wild populations of A. brunneum are presumed to have gone extinct. We used partial sequences of the cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene to provide the first phylogeographical perspective on these species from a limited dataset containing representatives of several wild populations that are successfully being bred in captivity. We found low genetic diversity and two haplotypes in A. chloroticum, and absence of variation with one haplotype in A. brunneum. The reservoir's entry zone was identified to be of great interest for conservation, and is where we suggest re‐introductions and translocations should be targeted, to preserve the future evolutionary potential of the extant diversity. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London  相似文献

Gas—liquid chromatographic studies were done to determine the fatty acid composition of Goniobasis virginica Physa sp., and Viviparus malleatus (Mollusca: Gastropoda), from Lake Musconetcong, NJ, U.S.A. Palmitic acid was the predominant saturated fatty acid, followed by stearic acid, in all three molluscan species. The chief monoenes were 16:n−7, 18:1n−7; 20:1n−11+9, and 22:1n−11+13, which together accounted for all monoene fatty acids and one-quarter of the total fatty acids. Considerable amounts of linolenic acid (2.7−4.1%) and arachidonic acid (7.8−12%) were found in all three species. The percentage composition of docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n−3) was low compared to that of eicosapentaenoic acid (22:5n−3). Non-methylene interrupted dienes (20:2 NMID), characteristic of marine molluscs, ranged from 2 to 3% in the three species of freshwater snails.  相似文献

The lymneid snail Lymnaea bogotensis Pilsbry 1935 is synonymized with L. cousini Jousseaume 1887, based on morphological comparisons of the reproductive systems. The shell, renal tube, and reproductive system are described and illustrated from specimens collected in the type locality and the municipality of Paipa, Colombia. Bibliographical records reveal L. columella to be the commonest lymneid in the country. The latter two species can be differentiated based on the morphology of the penial complex.  相似文献

The genus Aylacostoma Spix, 1827, is mainly endemic to South America, and comprises about 30 nominal species, most of which were described based solely on conchological features following the typological approaches of most of the 19th and the mid‐20th century authors. Here, we redescribe Aylacostoma chloroticum Hylton Scott, 1954, and describe A ylacostoma brunneum sp. nov . from the High Paraná River (Argentina–Paraguay) by means of morphological and molecular characters. Both are threatened species currently included into an ongoing ex situ conservation programme, as their habitats have disappeared because of damming and the filling up of the Yacyretá Reservoir in the early 1990s. We used DNA sequences from cytochrome b and cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) genes to estimate their genetic distances, and the COI sequences were also used to assess their specific status under the evolutionary genetic species concept by means of the K/θ method. Our results clearly demonstrate that both must be recognized as evolutionary genetic species, despite only minor differences in morphological characters other than in the shells. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London  相似文献

During the course of a project aiming at the reconstruction of the colonization of the South Pacific islands by tateid gastropods based on molecular data we discovered five new species on New Caledonia belonging to the genera Hemistomia and Leiorhagium, respectively. We describe these species based on morphological, anatomical and genetic data. All five species are morphologically cryptic as they closely resemble or are even indistinguishable from known species stressing the importance of a comprehensive taxonomic approach integrating several methods. As a consequence of their small and fragmented geographic ranges and the rapidly progressing anthropogenic land cover changes on New Caledonia, all five species qualify as critically endangered according to the criteria of the IUCN.  相似文献

Madagascar's magnificent and environmentally threatened endemic radiation of the land-snail genus Tropidophora Troschel has recently been classified into three subgenera, 95 species and 142 varieties, based on often subtle conchological variation among small samples; it seems best to ignore temporarily this confusing plethora of names until true biological species and their relationships are better understood. The author's field work in 1990 succeeded in obtaining live Tropidophora from 40 populations distributed throughout the island. Allozyme analysis (108 snails, 15 loci, 117 alleles) yielded a cladogram suggesting nine genetically coherent taxa (T. taxa A-I), each represented in the collections by 1–10 populations. Comparisons among shells (total 1634) and penes (total 31 from 20 populations representing eight of the nine taxa) revealed: (1) two conchologically indistinguishable taxa (H and I) fixed for alternative alleles at 13 of 15 loci, with only a very subtle difference in penes, and with mosaic and overlapping geographical distributions in the Northeast; (2) two extremely polytypic taxa (C in the Southwest, F in the Southeast) with parallel trends toward depressed, broadly umbilicate, heavily sculptured shells with apertural lips widely reflected at the umbilicus at inland, more arid sites, resulting in sympatric convergence; (3) one southeastern taxon (G) in which the penis apparently doubles in length but the shell does not change 6.0 km to the northwest, but in which the shell shifts dramatically in sculpture, colour, and lip reflection 0.5 km to the westnorthwest; and (4) generally such extreme intra- and inter-population variation in shell and male-genital characters as to render many of them dubious at best for systematics. Thus the Madagascan Tropidophora present a fascinatingly complex problem in evolutionary morphology/ecology, the solution of which will require even more extensive collecting, followed by molecular comparisons or detailed anatomical comparisons, or both. The total number of biological species is still likely to be quite large, despite irrelevance of much of the current taxonomy, because many smaller species remain to be discovered.  相似文献
