Commensal breeding habits of the Anthracophora rusticola (Coleoptera: Cetoniidae) in stick nests of carnivorous, piscivorous, and omnivorous birds were recently reported, but the detailed life history of the scarab beetle has not been thoroughly elucidated. To understand the breeding cycle of the declining A. rusticola related to that of nesting Chinese sparrowhawks (Accipiter soloensis) in Korea, we examined six sparrowhawk nests from 2005 to 2008 and reared larvae and cocoons in a cage in 2008. Each sparrowhawk nest hosted 11.3 ± 3.0 larvae and cocoons, implying that sparrowhawk nests might be the most important nesting resource of the beetles in Korea. The beetles may lay their eggs between late May and early July after nest building by sparrowhawks. Larvae were observed from July to August in the sparrowhawk nests, and adult beetles emerged in September after a mean pupal period of 25.5 days. Our results on the coinciding breeding of two commensal taxa over three months from May to September may provide key information regarding the life history of the commensal scarabid beetle and potential causes of the concurrent decline of both taxa in Korea.  相似文献

To encourage nest use in breeder poultry flocks, it is important that nest boxes are attractive. Few studies have evaluated factors affecting nest attractiveness to ducks. We assessed the effects of nest box experience (Experiments 1 and 2) and features of nests, including degree of enclosure (Experiments 1 and 2) and the presence of an egg (Experiment 3), on nest site selection by sexually mature Pekin ducks. The hens were tested individually in pens containing different nest box choices. Nest preferences were determined based on the locations of 14 successively laid eggs. Ducks in Experiment 1 were provided with nest box access prior to the onset of lay (20 weeks of age, EXP group, N = 12) or at the time of preference testing (35 weeks of age, DELAYED-EXP group, N = 12). Delaying nest box access by 15 weeks did not significantly affect the proportion of eggs laid in nest boxes rather than on the floor (P = 0.40). Regardless of experience ducks laid more than 66% of their eggs in nest boxes offering a higher degree of enclosure. Ducks in Experiment 2 were reared with either open-top (OP, N = 12) or closed-top (CL, N = 12) boxes. Regardless of rearing condition, ducks preferred boxes with the highest level of enclosure offered. Ducks laid twice the expected proportion (25%) of eggs in CL boxes with curtains (P = 0.0004). CL boxes without curtains were used as predicted by chance, 25% (P = 0.746), while OP boxes with (P = 0.009) and without (P = 0.015) curtains each contained only half the expected number of eggs. Ducks in Experiment 3 were provided with two nest boxes, one of which contained the egg laid the previous day. Each day, the newly laid egg was marked and either placed back in the nest box where it was found (HANDLED, N = 12) or moved into the adjacent nest box (MOVED, N = 12). Ducks in HANDLED and MOVED laid 97.6% and 79.8%, respectively, of their eggs in boxes containing the previous day's egg. While ducks in HANDLED were consistent in their choice throughout the test, those in MOVED developed the preference over time (P = 0.039), suggesting that the preference for laying in a nest containing an egg may be influenced by experience. These results indicate that nest box enclosure and the presence of an egg are important in determining the nesting choices of Pekin ducks. Incorporating these features into nest boxes may be useful for increasing consistency of nest use in breeder duck flocks.  相似文献

Many frogs from temperate climates can tolerate low temperatures and increase their thermal tolerance through hardening and acclimation. Most tropical frogs, on the other hand, fail to acclimate to low temperatures. This lack of acclimation ability is potentially due to lack of selection pressure for acclimation because cold weather is less common in the tropics. We tested the generality of this pattern by characterizing the critical temperature minimum (CTMin), hardening, and acclimation responses of túngara frogs (Engystomops pustulosus). These frogs belong to a family with unknown thermal ecology. They are found in a tropical habitat with a highly constant temperature regime. The CTMin of the tadpoles was on average 12.5 °C. Pre-metamorphic tadpoles hardened by 1.18 °C, while metamorphic tadpoles hardened by 0.36 °C. When raised at 21 °C, tadpoles acclimated expanding their cold tolerance by 1.3 °C in relation to larvae raised at 28 °C. These results indicate that the túngara frog has a greatly reduced cold tolerance when compared to species from temperate climates, but it responds to cold temperatures with hardening and acclimation comparable to those of temperate-zone species. Cold tolerance increased with body length but cold hardening was more extensive in pre-metamorphic tadpoles than in metamorphic ones. This study shows that lack of acclimation ability is not general to the physiology of tropical anurans.  相似文献

To test the hypothesis that impaired mitochondrial respiration limits cardiac performance at warm temperatures, and examine if any effect(s) are sex-related, the consequences of high temperature on cardiac mitochondrial oxidative function were examined in 10 °C acclimated, sexually immature, male and female Atlantic cod. Active (State 3) and uncoupled (States 2 and 4) respiration were measured in isolated ventricular mitochondria at 10, 16, 20, and 24 °C using saturating concentrations of malate and pyruvate, but at a submaximal (physiological) level of ADP (200 µM). In addition, citrate synthase (CS) activity was measured at these temperatures, and mitochondrial respiration and the efficiency of oxidative phosphorylation (P:O ratio) were determined at [ADP] ranging from 25–200 µM at 10 and 20 °C. Cardiac morphometrics and mitochondrial respiration at 10 °C, and the thermal sensitivity of CS activity (Q10=1.51), were all similar between the sexes. State 3 respiration at 200 µM ADP increased gradually in mitochondria from females between 10 and 24 °C (Q10=1.48), but plateaued in males above 16 °C, and this resulted in lower values in males vs. females at 20 and 24 °C. At 10 °C, State 4 was ~10% of State 3 values in both sexes [i.e. a respiratory control ratio (RCR) of ~10] and P:O ratios were approximately 1.5. Between 20 and 24 °C, State 4 increased more than State 3 (by ~70 vs. 14%, respectively), and this decreased RCR to ~7.5. The P:O ratio was not affected by temperature at 200 μM ADP. However, (1) the sensitivity of State 3 respiration to increasing [ADP] (from 25 to 200 μM) was reduced at 20 vs. 10 °C in both sexes (Km values 105±7 vs. 68±10 μM, respectively); and (2) mitochondria from females had lower P:O values at 25 vs. 100 μM ADP at 20 °C, whereas males showed a similar effect at 10 °C but a much more pronounced effect at 20 °C (P:O 1.05 at 25 μM ADP vs. 1.78 at 100 μM ADP). In summary, our results demonstrate several sex-related differences in ventricular mitochondrial function in Atlantic cod, and suggest that myocardial oxidative function and possibly phosphorylation efficiency may be limited at temperatures of 20 °C or above, particularly in males. These observations could partially explain why cardiac function in Atlantic cod plateaus just below this species׳ critical thermal maximum (~22 °C) and may contribute to yet unidentified sex differences in thermal tolerance and swimming performance.  相似文献

Studies examining the effects of incubation temperature fluctuation on the phenotype of hatchling reptiles have shown species variation. To examine whether incubation temperature fluctuation has a key role in influencing the phenotype of hatchling Chinese skinks (Plestiodon chinensis), we incubated eggs produced by 20 females under five thermal regimes (treatments). Eggs in three treatments were incubated in three incubators, one set constant at 27 °C and two ramp-programmed at 27±3 °C and 27±5 °C on a cycle of 12 h (+) and 12 h (−). The remaining eggs were incubated in two chambers: one inside a room where temperatures varied from 23.0 to 31.1 °C, with a mean of 27.0 °C; the other outside the room where temperatures varied from 20.2 to 35.3 °C, with a mean of 26.1 °C. We found that: (1) for eggs at a given embryonic stage at ovipositon, the mean rather than the variance of incubation temperatures determined the length of incubation; (2) most (egg mass, embryonic stage at oviposition, incubation length and all examined hatchling traits except tail length and locomotor performance) of the examined variables were affected by clutch; and (3) body mass was the only hatchling trait that differed among the five treatments, but the differences were tiny. These findings suggest that incubation temperature fluctuation has no direct role in influencing incubation length and hatchling phenotype in P. chinensis.  相似文献

We asked whether or not the thermal characteristics of fertile avian eggs changed throughout incubation. The cooling and warming times, expressed by the time constant τ of the egg temperature response to a rapid change in ambient temperature, were measured in fertile chicken eggs at early (E7), intermediate (E11) and late (E20) stages of embryonic development. Same measurements were conducted on eggs emptied of their content and refilled with water by various amounts. The results indicated that (1) the τ of a freshly laid egg was ~50 min; (2) τ decreased linearly with the drop in egg water volume; (3) the dry eggshell had almost no thermal resistance but its wet inner membrane contributed about one-third to the stability of egg temperature; (4) the egg constituents (yolk, albumen and embryonic tissues) and the chorioallantoic circulation had no measurable effect on τ; (5) the presence of an air pocket equivalent in volume to the air cell of fertile eggs reduced τ by about 3 min (E7), 5 min (E11) and 11 min (E20). Hence, in response to warming the egg τ at E20 was slightly shorter than at E7. In response to cooling, the egg τ at E20 was similar to, or longer than, E7 because embryonic thermogenesis (evaluated by measurements of oxygen consumption during cold) offset the reduction in τ introduced by the air cell. In conclusion, until the onset of thermogenesis the thermal behavior of a fertile egg is closely approximated by that of a water-filled egg with an air volume equivalent to the air cell. It is possible to estimate the cooling τ of avian eggs of different species from their weight and incubation time.  相似文献

Several studies demonstrate how beavers influence waterfowl habitat availability, ultimately improving waterfowl breeding success; however, no current research links beavers to early season nesting activities of Canada geese (Branta canadensis) in northern climates. We examined how beavers facilitate early access to open water for geese at Miquelon Lake Provincial Park (MLPP), Canada. We surveyed 32 active and 39 inactive beaver ponds to examine whether beavers facilitate early access to open water. Open water occurred 10.7 days earlier at active beaver ponds (mean ice-off day = 87.54, s = 13.88) than inactive ponds (mean ice-off day = 98.19, s = 9.07), especially adjacent to main lodge entrances and winter food caches. Snowpack was on average 5.9 cm shallower at active ponds. Prior to availability of open water, Canada geese exhibited intraspecific territoriality over beaver lodges as nest sites and once water was present, preferred island lodges over bank lodges. These findings support other studies that examined island nesting as protection from terrestrial predators and highlight the importance of beavers in creating open water areas earlier in the season.  相似文献

Coping with cold winter conditions is a major challenge for many insects.In early spring we observed newly emerged Drosophila subobscura, which had overwintered as larvae and pupae. As temperatures increase during spring these flies are faced with higher minimum and maximum temperatures in their natural microhabitat. Thus, there is a potential costly mismatch between winter and early spring acclimatization and the increased ambient temperatures later in adult life.We obtained individuals from a natural Danish population of D. subobscura and acclimated them in the laboratory to 20 °C for one generation, and compared critical thermal maximum (CTmax) and minimum (CTmin) to that of individuals collected directly from their natural microhabitat. The two populations (laboratory and field) were subsequently both held in the laboratory at 20 °C and tested for their CTmax and CTmin every third day for 28 days.At the first day of testing, field acclimatized D. subobscura had both higher heat and cold resistance compared to laboratory flies, and thereby a considerable larger thermal scope. Following transfer to the laboratory, cold and heat resistance of the field flies decreased over time relative to the laboratory flies. Despite the substantial decrease in thermal tolerances the thermal scope remained larger for field acclimatized individuals for the duration of the experiment.We conclude that flies acclimatized to their natural microhabitat had increased cold resistance, without a loss in heat tolerance. Thus while a negative correlation between cold and heat tolerance is typically observed in laboratory studies in Drosophila sp., this was not observed for field acclimatized D. subobscura in this study. We suggest that this is an adaptation to juvenile overwintering in temperate cold environments, where developmental (winter) temperatures can be much lower than temperatures experienced by reproducing adults after emergence (spring). The ability to gain cold tolerance through acclimatization without a parallel loss of heat tolerance affects thermal scope and suggests that high and low thermal tolerance act through mechanisms with different dynamics and reversibility.  相似文献

Supplementation of host resource can be more economical method for the biological control of insect pest compared to direct release of adult parasitoids. Periodical release of non-viable cold-stored eggs of Riptortus pedestris (Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Alydidae) has been found to enhance parasitism of this pest in soybean fields. To find the optimum environmental conditions for cold storage of these host eggs, we evaluated nine different combinations of temperature (2, 6, and 10 °C) and relative humidity (high 90–95%, medium 70–75%, and low 30–35%). After 30 d of cold-storage, eggs were weighed and held at 26.6 °C and 75% relative humidity for 8 d before testing. To test the eggs’ suitability as hosts following cold storage, females of Ooencyrtus nezarae Ishii (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) were released individually onto batches of eggs, and parasitization rates and the development, emergence, sex ratio, adult longevity, and size of parasitoid progeny were examined. Eggs stored at high relative humidity showed less weight loss than those stored at low relative humidity. The number of eggs parasitized was highest (5.9/15) on eggs stored at 6 °C and high relative humidity. Developmental times and adult emergence were optimal on host eggs stored at 2 °C and high relative humidity. A significantly lower proportion of eggs produced male parasitoids when eggs were stored at 2 or 6 °C. Adult longevity was not affected by egg storage conditions, but adult size of progeny decreased in eggs stored at 10 °C. In conclusion, eggs of R. pedestris stored below 6 °C and with a high relative humidity maintained the best quality for parasitization by O. nezarae.  相似文献

Insects and their products are included in the traditional pharmacopoeia of various ethnic groups worldwide. In the Brazilian semiarid region can be highlighted the use of the termite Nasutitermes corniger for the treatment of various diseases. This study evaluated the ethanol extract of N. corniger and its nest as an antimicrobial agent and as a modulator of bacterial resistance against multidrug strains. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of the extract on Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli by microdilution was determined, as well as MIC of antibiotics in the presence and absence of extract. Despite having no significant antimicrobial activity (MIC  1000 μg mL−1), the extract showed additive activity to the antibiotic efficacy, significantly reducing its MIC. These results suggest that N. corniger and its nest are promising natural products for use in antimicrobial therapy.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that exposure of chick embryos to corticosterone leads to increased fear, reduced competitive ability, reduced ability to cross a barrier and reduced growth in juvenile chicks. Behaviour was studied in birds subjected to three different egg injection treatments: a negative control (no treatment of eggs), a positive control (100 μl sesame oil vehicle) and a corticosterone treatment (0.6 μg corticosterone in 100 μl sesame oil). Eggs were injected prior to incubation and the behaviour of chicks was studied during the first 4 weeks of life. Corticosterone treatment increased fear in chicks, as indicated by greater avoidance of an observer in the home pen at 2 weeks of age (P < 0.0001), reduced ability to cross a wall to access feed at 2 weeks of age (P < 0.05) and reduced ability to compete for a wormlike object at 4 weeks of age (P < 0.01). Treatment with corticosterone also reduced body weight at 1 week of age (P < 0.003) and 4 weeks of age (P < 0.04), but not at hatch (P < 0.28). The sesame oil vehicle reduced fear (P < 0.0001), but had no other significant effects. These results indicate that embryonic exposure to corticosterone leads to behavioural and growth deficits in chicks.  相似文献

The threat of global warming has prompted numerous recent studies on the thermal tolerance of marine species. A widely used method to determine the upper thermal limit has been the Critical Thermal Maximum (CTMax), a dynamic method, meaning that temperature is increased gradually until a critical point is reached. This method presents several advantages over static methods, however, there is one main issue that hinders interpretation and comparison of CTMax results: the rate at which the temperature is increased. This rate varies widely among published protocols. The aim of the present work was to determine the effect of warming rate on CTMax values, using different animal groups. The influence of the thermal niche occupied by each species (intertidal vs subtidal) and habitat (intertidal vs subtidal) was also investigated. CTMax were estimated at three different rates: 1 °C min−1, 1 °C 30 min−1 and 1 °C h−1, in two species of crab, Eurypanopeus abbreviatus and Menippe nodifrons, shrimp Palaemon northropi and Hippolyte obliquimanus and fish Bathygobius soporator and Parablennius marmoreus. While there were significant differences in the effect of warming rates for some species, for other species warming rate produced no significant differences (H. obliquimanus and B. soporator). While in some species slower warming rates lead to lower CTMax values (P. northropi and P. marmoreus) in other species the opposite occurred (E. abbreviatus and M. nodifrons). Biological group has a significant effect with crabs' CTMax increasing at slower warming rates, which did not happen for shrimp and fish. Subtidal species presented lower CTMax, at all warming rates tested. This study highlights the importance of estimating CTMax values at realistic rates that species encounter in their environment and thus have an ecological value.  相似文献

Thermal limits of insects can be influenced by recent thermal history: here we used thermolimit respirometry to determine metabolic rate responses and thermal limits of the dominant meat ant, Iridomyrmex purpureus. Firstly, we tested the hypothesis that nest surface temperatures have a pervasive influence on thermal limits. Metabolic rates and activity of freshly field collected individuals were measured continuously while ramping temperatures from 44 °C to 62 °C at 0.25 °C/minute. At all the stages of thermolimit respirometry, metabolic rates were independent of nest surface temperatures, and CTmax did not differ between ants collected from nest with different surface temperatures. Secondly, we tested the effect of brain control on upper thermal limits of meat ants via ant decapitation experiments (‘headedness’). Decapitated ants exhibited similar upper critical temperature (CTmax) results to living ants (Decapitated 50.3±1.2 °C: Living 50.1±1.8 °C). Throughout the temperature ramping process, ‘headedness’ had a significant effect on metabolic rate in total (Decapitated CO2 140±30 µl CO2 mg−1 min−1: Living CO2 250±50 CO2 mg−1 min−1), as well as at temperatures below and above CTmax. At high temperatures (>44 °C) pre- CTmax the relationships between I. purpureus CTmax values and mass specific metabolic rates for living ants exhibited a negative slope whilst decapitated ants exhibited a positive slope. The decapitated ants also had a significantly higher Q10:25–35 °C when compared to living ants (1.91±0.43 vs. 1.29±0.35). Our findings suggest that physiological responses of ants may be able to cope with increasing surface temperatures, as shown by metabolic rates across the thermolimit continuum, making them physiologically resilient to a rapidly changing climate. We also demonstrate that the brain plays a role in respiration, but critical thermal limits are independent of respiration levels.  相似文献

Retrieving leaf chlorophyll content at a range of spatio-temporal scales is central to monitoring vegetation productivity, identifying physiological stress and managing biological resources. However, estimating leaf chlorophyll over broad spatial extents using ground-based traditional methods is time and resource heavy. Satellite-derived spectral vegetation indices (VIs) are commonly used to estimate leaf chlorophyll content, however they are often developed and tested on broadleaf species. Relatively little research has assessed VIs for different leaf structures, particularly needle leaves which represent a large component of boreal forest and significant global ecosystems. This study tested the performance of 47 published VIs for estimating foliar chlorophyll content from different leaf and canopy structures (broadleaf and needle). Coniferous and deciduous sites were selected in Ontario, Canada, representing different dominant vegetation species (Picea mariana and Acer saccharum) and a variety of canopy structures. Leaf reflectance data was collected using an ASD Fieldspec Pro spectroradiometer (400–2500 nm) for over 300 leaf samples. Canopy reflectance data was acquired from the medium resolution imaging spectrometer (MERIS). At the canopy level, with both leaf types combined, the DD-index showed the strongest relationship with leaf chlorophyll (R2 = 0.78; RMSE = 3.56 μg/cm2), despite differences in leaf structure. For needleleaf trees alone the relationship with the top VI was weaker (D[red], R2 = 0.71; RMSE = 2.32 μg/cm2). A sensitivity study using simulated VIs from physically-modelled leaf (PROSPECT) and canopy (4-Scale) reflectance was performed in order to further investigate these results and assess the impacts of different background types and leaf area index on the VIs’ performance. At the leaf level, the MNDVI8 index showed a strong linearity to changing chlorophyll and negligible difference to leaf structure/type. At canopy level, the best performing VIs were relatively consistent where LAI  4, but responded strongly to differences in background at low canopy coverage (LAI = 2). This research provides comprehensive assessments for the use of spectral indices in retrieval of spatially-continuous leaf chlorophyll content at the leaf (MTCI: R2 = 0.72; p < 0.001) and canopy (DD: R2 = 0.78; p < 0.001) level for resource management over different spatial and temporal scales.  相似文献

A new strain of the parasitoid Trichogramma pretiosum, was collected in Rio Verde County, State of Goiás, Central Brazil, and designated as T. pretiosum RV. This strain was then found to be the most effective one among several different strains of T. pretiosum tested in a parasitoid selection assay. Therefore, its biological characteristics and thermal requirements were studied, aiming at allowing its multiplication under controlled environmental conditions in the laboratory. The parasitoid was reared on eggs of Pseudoplusia includens and Anticarsia gemmatalis at different constant temperatures within an 18–32 °C temperature range. The number of annual generations of the parasitoid was also estimated at those temperatures. Results have shown that T. pretiosum RV developmental time, from egg to adult, was influenced by all temperatures tested within the range, varying from 6.8 to 20.3 days and 6.0 to 17.0 days on eggs of P. includens and A. gemmatalis, respectively. The emergence of T. pretiosum RV from eggs of A. gemmatalis was higher than 94% at all temperatures tested. When this variable was evaluated on eggs of P. includens, however, the figures were higher than that within the 18–30 °C range (more than 98%), and were also statistically higher than the emergence observed at 32 °C (90.2%). The sex ratio of the parasitoids emerged from eggs of A. gemmatalis decreased from 0.55 to 0.29 at 18–32 °C, respectively. However, for those emerged from eggs of P. includens, the sex ratio was similar (0.73, 0.72 and 0.71) at 20, 28 and 32 °C, respectively. The lower temperature threshold (Tb) and thermal constant (K) were 10.65 °C and 151.25 degree-days when the parasitoid was reared on eggs of P. includens; and 11.64 °C and 127.60 degree-days when reared on eggs of A. gemmatalis. The number of generations per month increased from 1.45 to 4.23 and from 1.49 to 4.79 when the parasitoid was reared on eggs of P. includens and A. gemmatalis, respectively, following the increases in the temperature.  相似文献

The main objective of this paper was to assess the performance of the ambulatory device μHematron to measure indirectly skin blood flow relative to the well-established Laser Doppler flowmetry method. The μHematron device is dedicated to the non-invasive measurement of effective thermal conductivity of living tissues, based on the thermal clearance method. Its major advantage is its ambulatory functionality, as available methods for evaluation of microcirculatory activity are non-ambulatory methods. An experiment was conducted on ten healthy women exposed for one hour in three different thermal environments (22 °C, 25 °C and 30 °C). Skin microcirculatory activity was analyzed after an acclimatization period of 30 minutes. The time between each exposure was at least one hour. Performances of the μHematron device were assessed and a comparative study with a laser Doppler perfusion monitor (LDPM) was performed. Good correlation coefficients between the two devices (r = 0.71 at T1 = 22 °C, r = 0.77 at T2 = 25 °C and r = 0.83 at T3 = 30 °C) were obtained while the LDPM signal was filtered by a low pass filter (0.1 Hz). These results showed that continuous monitoring of effective thermal conductivity was possible in neutral and warm ambiences. Then, the μHematron device could be considered as a complementary tool to Doppler techniques for the investigation of skin blood flow, when ambulatory conditions are required.  相似文献

The efficacy of an essential oil obtained from Pimpinella anisum fruits and its major compound, trans-Anethole, was tested on the eggs, larvae and adults of Culex quinquefasciatus. While causing no significant mortality on eggs, other tested stages were very sensitive to the essential oil and trans-Anethole. LC50 for the 2nd to 4th instar larvae was estimated as 26–27 μL·L 1 and 15–19 μL·L 1 for the essential oil and trans-Anethole, respectively. As for the essential oil applied on adults, LC(LD)50 was estimated as 9.3 μL mL 1 (spray test), 1.9 μL L 1 (fumigation test) and 0.6 μg cm 2 (tarsal test), and for trans-Anethole as 8.1 μL mL 1 (spray test), 2.1 μL L 1 (fumigation test) and 0.4 μg cm 2 (tarsal test). The time needed to achieve 50% mortality after application of LC(LD)99 of the essential oil was significantly different; for example, in larvicidal assays it ranged from 15 to 235 min depending on the larval instar, and from 9 to 180 min when applied to adults, depending on the mode of application. It was also found that temperature had an important effect on the larvicidal efficacy of the essential oil, and oviposition deterrent activity was studied.The essential oil and trans-Anethole were toxic for Daphnia magna (62–92% mortality) and significantly reduced its fertility at high concentrations (35–50 μL mL 1) and long exposure (48 h). However, no negative effect on Daphnia mortality or fertility was found at shorter exposure times (6 h) and/or lower concentrations (20 μL mL 1).Based on the results of this study, we can recommend the essential oil from P. anisum as a suitable active substance for potential botanical insecticides.  相似文献

This study details on cloning and characterization of Cu,Zn superoxide dismutase (Ca–Cu,Zn SOD) from a medicinally important plant species Curcuma aromatica. Ca–Cu,Zn SOD was 692 bp with an open reading frame of 459 bp. Expression of the gene in Escherichia coli cells followed by purification yielded the enzyme with Km of 0.047 ± 0.008 μM and Vmax of 1250 ± 24 units/mg of protein. The enzyme functioned (i) across a temperature range of −10 to +80 °C with temperature optima at 20 °C; and (ii) at pH range of 6–9 with optimum activity at pH 7.8. Ca–Cu,Zn SOD retained 50% of the maximum activity after autoclaving, and was stable at a wide storage pH ranging from 3 to 10. The enzyme tolerated varying concentrations of denaturating agent, reductants, inhibitors, trypsin, was fairly resistant to inactivation at 80 °C for 180 min (kd, 6.54 ± 0.17 × 10−3 min−1; t1/2, 106.07 ± 2.68 min), and had midpoint of thermal transition (Tm) of 70.45 °C. The results suggested Ca–Cu,Zn SOD to be a kinetically stable protein that could be used for various industrial applications.  相似文献

A preliminary study was conducted to delineate the ameliorating effect of dietary zinc nanoparticles (Zn-NPs) against thermal stress in Pangasius hypophthalmus reared under concurrent exposure to lead (Pb) and elevated temperature (34 °C). Three diets were formulated such as control (no Zn-NPs), Zn-NPs 10 and 20 mg/kg diet. Two hundred and thirty four fish were randomly distributed in to six treatments groups in triplicates; such as control group (no Zn-NPs in diet and unexposed to Pb and temperature, Ctr/Ctr), control diet with concurrent exposure to Pb and temperature (Pb-T/Ctr), Zn-NPs 10 and 20 mg/kg without stressors (Zn-NPs 10 mg/kg, Zn-NPs 20 mg/kg), Zn-NPs 10 and 20 mg/kg diet with concurrent exposure to Pb and temperature (Pb-T/Zn-NPs 10 mg/kg, Pb-T/Zn-NPs 20 mg/kg). The Pb in treated water was maintained at the level of 1/21th of LC50 (4 ppm) at 34 °C temperature in stressors groups. Post 60 days feeding trial, critical thermal minimum (CTmin), lethal thermal minimum (LTmin), and critical thermal maximum (CTmax), lethal thermal maximum (LTmax) and biochemical attributes on P. hypophthalmus were evaluated. The results indicated that, dietary supplementation of Zn-NPs increased the CTmin, LTmin and CTmax, LTmax in P. hypophthalmus. Positive correlations were observed between CTmin LTmin (Y = − 0.495 + 10.08x, R2, 0.896) and CTmax LTmax (Y = − 0.872 + 4.43x, R2, 0.940). At the end of the thermal tolerance study, oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation (LPO) were significantly reduced and neurotransmitter enzyme was significantly increased in the groups fed with Zn-NPs @ 10 mg and 20 mg/kg diet. Overall results indicated that dietary Zn-NPs can confer protection against thermal stress in P. hypophthalmus.  相似文献
