Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) has a phenomenology resembling many culture-bound (culture-specific) syndromes described in the anthropological literature. Viewed as a culture-specific syndrome, PMS is an appropriate symbolic representation of conflicting societal expectations that women be both productive and reproductive. By simultaneously denying either alternative, PMS translates role conflict into a standardized cultural idiom. Thus, despite obvious biopsychological determinants, PMS is best understood as a sociocultural phenomenon illustrating both the special status of women in Western culture and the ethnocentrism of Western anthropology which heretofore has only recently begun to identify culture-specific syndromes in its own back yard.  相似文献

We investigated a family with an autosomal recessive syndrome of cafe-au-lait patches and childhood malignancy, notably supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumor. There was no cancer predisposition in heterozygotes; nor was there bowel cancer in any individual. However, autozygosity mapping indicated linkage to a region of 7p22 surrounding the PMS2 mismatch-repair gene. Sequencing of genomic PCR products initially failed to identify a PMS2 mutation. Genome searches then revealed a previously unrecognized PMS2 pseudogene, corresponding to exons 9-15, within a 100-kb inverted duplication situated 600 kb centromeric from PMS2 itself. This information allowed a redesigned sequence analysis, identifying a homozygous mutation (R802X) in PMS2 exon 14. Furthermore, in the family with Turcot syndrome, in which the first inherited PMS2 mutation (R134X) was described, a further truncating mutation was identified on the other allele, in exon 13. Further whole-genome analysis shows that the complexity of PMS2 pseudogenes is greater than appreciated and may have hindered previous mutation studies. Several previously reported PMS2 polymorphisms are, in fact, pseudogene sequence variants. Although PMS2 mutations may be rare in colorectal cancer, they appear, for the most part, to behave as recessive traits. For technical reasons, their involvement in childhood cancer, particularly in primitive neuroectodermal tumor, may have been underestimated.  相似文献

This study compared the levels of 18 red cell elements and 22 hair elements in 46 patients (median age: 36.2 yr) diagnosed with PMS (premenstrual syndrome) to 50 normals (median age: 37.7 yr). Significantly lower amounts of calcium, chromium, copper, and manganese were found in the blood of patients with PMS. The ratios of Mg/Ca and K/Na and toxic metals such as lead, arsenic, and germanium were significantly elevated in the PMS patients. In hair, mercury and the Zn/Cu ratio were significantly greater in the PMS patients than the controls, but iron, potassium, and the Mg/Ca ratio were lower. The highly significant Mg/Ca ratio in blood cells may be indicative of a more complex relationship between PMS and magnesium and calcium than either element alone. The significantly lower blood cell calcium level found in these studies may provide additional evidence that PMS may be related to a calcium-deficiency state or a metabolic defect involving calcium.  相似文献

This study is the first to describe age-related changes in a large cohort of patients with Phelan–McDermid syndrome (PMS), also known as 22q13 deletion syndrome. Over a follow-up period of up to 12 years, physical examinations and structured interviews were conducted for 201 individuals diagnosed with PMS, 120 patients had a focused, high-resolution 22q12q13 array CGH, and 92 patients’ deletions were assessed for parent-of-origin. 22q13 genomic anomalies include terminal deletions of 22q13 (89 %), terminal deletions and interstitial duplications (9 %), and interstitial deletions (2 %). Considering different age groups, in older patients, behavioral problems tended to subside, developmental abilities improved, and some features such as large or fleshy hands, full or puffy eyelids, hypotonia, lax ligaments, and hyperextensible joints were less frequent. However, the proportion reporting an autism spectrum disorder, seizures, and cellulitis, or presenting with lymphedema or abnormal reflexes increased with age. Some neurologic and dysmorphic features such as speech and developmental delay and macrocephaly correlated with deletion size. Deletion sizes in more recently diagnosed patients tend to be smaller than those diagnosed a decade earlier. Seventy-three percent of de novo deletions were of paternal origin. Seizures were reported three times more often among patients with a de novo deletion of the maternal rather than paternal chromosome 22. This analysis improves the understanding of the clinical presentation and natural history of PMS and can serve as a reference for the prevalence of clinical features in the syndrome.  相似文献

With ever-increasing importance, plant maintenance is no more regarded as second line or non-productive activity. It is about time maintenance received due attention from various business improvement initiatives such as total quality management or business process reengineering (BPR). This paper builds on previous work by the authors that examines the role of performance measurement systems (PMS) in maintenance, with particular reference to developing a new PMS framework using the quality function deployment (QFD) technique. In the light of the fact that there is only limited evidence of BPR applications pertinent to equipment maintenance, this paper explores the use of the PMS framework to enable and guide sound BPR endeavors in maintenance. Condensed literature on BPR is presented followed by an outline of the PMS framework. The benefits of utilizing such a framework are examined with reference to BPR in maintenance. The practical implications of the findings are discussed based on a case study conducted in a local company.  相似文献

Nexplanon(?) is a new long-term reversible contraception method. The current review is aimed to analyze the published data concerning the contraceptive effectiveness of Nexplanon(?) and its effects on reproductive function. Pharmacological properties and technical procedures of insertion and removal, as well as the efficacy and safety data available, were discussed. Possible strategies for treating Nexplanon(?)-related bleeding were also described. With regard to the future research and the future scientific developments of contraceptive implants, the possible use of Nexplanon(?) wide-ranging for the symptomatic treatment of endometriosis and premenstrual syndrome (PMS) were considered. Finally, it was defined in which women the use of Nexplanon(?) is indicated and in which it is contra-indicated.  相似文献

This paper describes the properties and application of 1-methoxy-5-methylphenazinium methyl sulfate (1-methoxyPMS), which is a photochemically stable, versatile electron carrier. Like 5-methylphenazinium methyl sulfate (PMS), it mediates electron transfer between NADH and various electron acceptors such as tetrazolium dyes or the electrode of an enzymic electric cell, and yet it does not deteriorate upon storage under scattered light in normal laboratories. The rate of reduction of 1-methoxyPMS coupled to the reoxidation of NADH produced by the lactate dehydrogenase reaction, was even faster than that of PMS. It was also successfully employed as an electron mediator in the enzymic electric cell method for the assay of NAD-linked dehydrogenases. 1-MethoxyPMS solution is rosy pink, and its standard redox potential (E0') is approximately +0.063 V. The use of 1-methoxyPMS will be beneficial in biochemistry as well as medical technology, where PMS has been used as an electron mediator in various electron transfer systems.  相似文献

The typical dose for insemination into the uterine body of the mare is > 300 x 10(6) progressively motile spermatozoa (PMS) and an insemination dose of > 200 x 10(6) PMS is recommended for frozen-thawed semen. Low-dose insemination techniques allow for a drastic reduction in the numbers of spermatozoa required to achieve pregnancy. Acceptable pregnancy rates can be achieved with doses ranging from 1 to 25 x 10(6) PMS in volumes ranging from 20 to 1000 microL. Two techniques have been described: hysteroscopic insemination and transrectally guided deep horn insemination using a pipette. Similar pregnancy rates can be attained by either method when 5 x 10(6) PMS are used. Hysteroscopic insemination may provide an advantage when the dose is 1-3 x 10(6) PMS. These techniques have the potential to make more efficient use of frozen-thawed or sex-sorted semen from certain stallions. The use of low-dose insemination to improve fertility of infertile stallions warrants further investigation.  相似文献

Kinetic constants were compared among p-quinone, 2,6-dichlorophenolindophenol, phenazine methosulfate (PMS), methylene blue, and FAD in the oxidation of NADH. Among those, PMS was selected for its highest rate constant as a mediator for the electrochemical oxidation of NAD. The PMS could be stably immobilized on a graphite electrode surface by adsorption. The PMS adsorbed and that in the solution showed distinctly separated peaks in the cyclic voltammogram. The immobilized PMS functioned as an immobilized mediator to reduce the overpotential in the electrochemical oxidation of NAD so that the electrode could be used as an NAD regenerator. For the construction of an electrochemical bioreactor, a specially designed rotating disk graphite electrode was used. In spite of its extraordinarily large surface area, the behavior of the rotating disc electrode was described well by the Levich law. The NAD oxidation system of the rotating graphite disk electrode with PMS adsorbed was combined with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase reaction, which reduced NAD with the consumption of glucose-6-phosphate. The electrochemical bioreactor system worked well with recycling of NAD at a high current efficiency.  相似文献

1. In species such as quasi-gregarious egg parasitoids, which exploit defendable patches, the fitness pay-off from superparasitism is an important factor in considering the evolution of patch defence and optimal patch defence strategies.
2. When oviposition in a previously parasitized host has a non-zero fitness pay-off, competing parasitoids are not only able to diminish the future value of a patch to other females by depleting unparasitized hosts, but also devalue the previous investment of other females in the patch by superparasitizing.
3. In Trissolcus basalis , an egg parasitoid of pentatomid bugs, the fitness pay-off from superparasitism is higher than 0.5 when the time interval between ovipositions is less than 3 h, suggesting that defending a previous investment will be an important component of patch defence behaviour.
4. The data suggest a mechanism for the high early pay-off, which involves the superparasitizing female adjusting the sex ratio of its offspring in favour of males. Males develop more quickly than females and thus may have a competitive advantage.  相似文献

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized clinically by progressive impairment of memory and cognition. Previous data have shown that beta-amyloid (Aβ) cascade plays a central role in AD pathophysiology and thus drugs regulate amyloid precursor protein (APP) metabolism may have therapeutic potential. Here the effects of PMS777, a new cholinesterase inhibitor with anti-platelet activated factor activity, on APP processing were investigated. Using SH-SY5YAPP695 cells, it showed that PMS777 treatment caused significant decreased secretion of sAPPα into the conditioned media without affecting cellular holoAPP synthesis. When PC12 cells were incubated with PMS777, the same effect was observed. The data also indicated that 10 μM PMS777 incubation decreased the release of Aβ42 into the cell media as compared with vehicle group in SH-SY5YAPP695 cells. Pretreatment of cells with M-receptor scopolamine antagonized the decreased secretion of sAPPα induced by PMS777, but N-receptor α-bungarotoxin pretreatment did not have such an effect. These results indicated that PMS777 could modulate APP processing in vitro and that decreasing Aβ generation might demonstrate its therapeutic potential in AD.  相似文献

Objectives

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) refers to a series of cycling and relapsing physical, emotion and behavior syndromes that occur in the luteal phase and resolve soon after the onset of menses. Although PMS is widely recognized, its neural mechanism is still unclear.

Design

To address this question, we measured brain activity for women with PMS and women without PMS (control group) using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). In addition, the participants should complete the emotion scales (Beck Anxiety Inventory, BAI; Beck Depression Inventory, BDI, before the scanning) as well as the stress perception scale (Visual analog scale for stress, VAS, before and after the scanning).

Results

The results showed that compared with the control group, the PMS group had decreased connectivity in the middle frontal gyrus (MFG) and theparahippocampalgyrus (PHG), as well as increased connectivity in the left medial/superior temporal gyri (MTG/STG) and precentralgyrus within the default mode network (DMN); in addition, the PMS group had higher anxiety and depression scale scores, together with lower stress perception scores. Finally, there were significantly positive correlations between the stress perception scores and functional connectivity in the MFG and cuneus. The BDI scores in the PMS group were correlated negatively with the functional connectivity in the MFG and precuneus and correlated positively with the functional connectivity in the MTG.

Conclusion

These findings suggest that compared with normal women, women with PMS displayed abnormal stress sensitivity, which was reflected in the decreased and increased functional connectivity within the DMN, blunted stress perception and higher depression.  相似文献

Hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) is an autosomal dominant syndrome characterized by predisposition to early-onset cancers. HNPCC is caused by heterozygous loss-of-function mutations within the mismatch repair genes MLH1, MSH2, MSH6, PMS1, and PMS2. We genotyped the MLH1 and MSH2 genes in patients suffering from Lynch syndrome and in 11 unrelated patients who were diagnosed with colorectal cancer and had subsequently undergone surgery. Five Lynch syndrome patients carried germline mutations in MLH1 or MSH2. Two of these were identified as known mutations in MLH1: deletion of exon 10 and a point mutation (V384D). The remaining three patients exhibited novel mutations: a duplication (937_942dupGAAGTT) in MLH1; deletion of exons 8, 9, and 10; and a point mutation in MLH1 (F396I) combined with multiple missense mutations in MSH2 (D295G, K808E, Q855P, and I884T). The findings underline the importance of efficient pre-screening of conspicuous cases.  相似文献

Pseudomonas aeruginosa produces several phenazines including the recently described 5-methyl-phenazine-1-carboxylic acid (5MPCA), which exhibits a novel antibiotic activity towards pathogenic fungi such as Candida albicans. Here we characterize the unique antifungal mechanisms of 5MPCA using its analogue phenazine methosulphate (PMS). Like 5MPCA, PMS induced fungal red pigmentation and killing. Mass spectrometry analyses demonstrated that PMS can be covalently modified by amino acids, a process that yields red derivatives. Furthermore, soluble proteins from C. albicans grown with either PMS or P. aeruginosa were also red and demonstrated absorbance and fluorescence spectra similar to that of PMS covalently linked to either amino acids or proteins in vitro, suggesting that 5MPCA modification by protein amine groups occurs in vivo. The red-pigmented C. albicans soluble proteins were reduced by NADH and spontaneously oxidized by oxygen, a reaction that likely generates reactive oxygen species (ROS). Additional evidence indicated that ROS generation precedes 5MPCA-induced fungal death. Reducing conditions greatly enhanced PMS uptake by C. albicans and killing. Since 5MPCA was more toxic than other phenazines that are not modified, such as pyocyanin, we propose that the covalent binding of 5MPCA promotes its accumulation in target cells and contributes to its antifungal activity in mixed-species biofilms.  相似文献

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a cyclical disorder observed in late luteal phase and presenting with behavioral changes that can affect interpersonal relationships and normal daily activity. Sleep disturbances are also common. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between PMS and subjective sleep quality with Pitsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) in the Medical Academy students, whom have considerable information about menstruation. PMS was detected with "Premenstrual Syndrome Scale", and PSQI was used to evaluate subjective sleep quality. Chi-square test and Kendall's rank correlation analysis were used in statistical analysis. p values (p < 0.05) were considered as statistical significant. Poor sleep quality was found in the 75.6% of the participants with PMS, and 58.8% of the participants without PMS (p < 0.05). Only component 5 (sleep disorder component) of the PSQI components revealed statistically significant difference (1.7 ± 0.6 in participants with PMS, and 1.5 ± 0.6 without PMS, p < 0.05). There was a positive correlation between total PSQI score and all of its' components, except component 6 (sleeping pill usage component) (p < 0.05). The strongest association was found to be in the component 5 (r = 0.528; p = 0.0001). Results of our study suggested the poor sleep quality due to sleep disorders in women with PMS.  相似文献

SARS作为急性呼吸道传染病,其肺损伤的早期与急性呼吸窘迫综合征(ARDS)有关,后期表现为肺纤维化。患者体内免疫防御机制可出现针对SARS病毒的过度激活,造成肺部白细胞免疫炎性损伤。粘附分子及其介导的白细胞粘附可能参与了SARS的急性肺损伤。设想在病毒感染早期,通过抗粘附免疫调节,抑制患者过激的免疫防御机制,阻抑活化白细胞的粘附级联反应,进而减轻肺损伤,以减轻或延缓病变的进一步发展。  相似文献

Summary The use of phenazine methosulfate (PMS) has been investigated in the histochemical demonstration of dehydrogenase in some organs of the rat. The demonstration of nicotinamid-adenine-dinucleotide (NAD) linked dehydrogenases, which in the conventional methods without PMS is dependent upon the localisation of reduced NAD (NADH)-diaphorase, is greatly hindered by PMS. This inhibition is caused by the inactivation of the diaphorase by PMS. However in tissues or cells lacking the diaphorase, the nucleotide-linked dehydrogenases can be made visible by the addition of PMS to the conventional dehydrogenase reagents. PMS strongly activates the nucleotide-independent dehydrogenases such as succinate dehydrogenase.  相似文献

A cell suspension in a water-insoluble organic solvent (benzene: n-heptane, 1 : 1 by volume) of Nocardia rhodocrous (previously induced to synthesize steroid Δ1dehydrogenase) rapidly catalyzed the stoichiometric oxidation of 4-androstene-3,17-dione (4-AD) to androst-l,4-diene-3,17-dione (ADD) in the presence of phenazine methosulfate (PMS). High levels of 4-AD or PMS reduced the conversion rates. No appreciable decrease in the conversion rate was observed on adding aqueous buffer solution to the thawed ceils (up to 9.4 g water/g dry cell). The whole cells were immobilized by entrapment in a hydrophilic gel (H-gel) or a lipophilic gel (L-gel) by use of a water-soluble or water-insoluble photocrosslinkable prepolymer. The reticula of H- and L-gel matrices were impregnated with water and organic solvent, respectively. Both the H- and L-gels could convert 4-AD to ADD in the presence of PMS, the L-gel showing a slightly higher conversion rate. Various lines of evidence indicate that the limiting factor is the penetration rate of 4-AD into gel particles for the H-gel, and the penetration rate of PMS for the L-gel. The catalytic activities decreased considerably after several successive runs with the free cell suspension system, while the immobilized cells were more stable, the stability of H-gel and L-gel being almost the same.  相似文献

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of platelet activating factor (PAF) antagonists, PMS 536 and PMS 549, on LLC-PK1 toxicity induced by Cyclosporin A (CsA). The LLC-PK1 cell line was used as an in vitro model. CsA cytotoxicity was determined in relation with ATP content. Alkaline phosphatase and N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase activities, which are directly correlated with tubular cell damage, were used as markers for renal injury. CsA alone provoked in the LLC-PKI cell line a marked decrease in cell viability (55%) and membrane integrity (56%), and a significant increase in AP and NAG activities and in oxidized glutathione level. The ATP decrease and the ADP increase, resulting in a decline of the ATP/ADP ratio, is indicative of an anoxic energy charge. Co-treatment with CsA plus PMS 536 or PMS 549 resulted in a minor decrease in cell viability and in significant membrane integrity recovery. Moreover, the ATP depletion and the increase in ATP metabolites, hypoxanthine and uric acid induced by CsA were strongly prevented by PAF antagonists. In contrast, GSSG level remained high as in CsA-treated cells, but GSH level was in the range of controls. Our results suggest that both PAF antagonists attenuate CsA oxidative injury and prevent energy metabolism disturbances probably by maintaining cell integrity. The lipophilicity of both molecules may be responsible for membrane stabilization and may confer the protective effects observed in energy metabolism. The results obtained with PMS 536 and PMS 549 are indicative of interactions between PAF and CsA in renal injury and suggest the therapeutic potential of these PAF-antagonists against CsA-induced nephrotoxicity.  相似文献
