Brachypterolus pulicarius (L.) (Coleoptera: Kateridae) is an inadvertently introduced biological control agent that can reduce seed set in two North American invasive species, yellow (Linaria vulgaris P. Mill.) (Scrophulariaceae) and Dalmatian toadflax (Linaria genistifolia (L.) P. Mill. ssp. dalmatica). The beetles are more common on yellow toadflax than on Dalmatian toadflax. To understand their distribution on the two host plants, we investigated whether they prefer one host to the other and whether individuals aggregate toward conspecifics. In field and laboratory experiments where beetles were presented with a choice of both toadflax species, B. pulicarius sampled from both host plants preferred yellow toadflax. However, in the laboratory experiment, beetles collected from Dalmatian toadflax showed a weaker preference for yellow toadflax than beetles collected from yellow toadflax. In the field experiment, all beetle populations sampled showed similar preferences. When given a choice between yellow toadflax plants with and without trapped adult B. pulicarius, beetles preferred plants with conspecifics, suggesting aggregation toward beetle pheromones or host‐plant volatiles induced by beetle activity. These results do not support the current practice of redistributing North American B. pulicarius onto Dalmatian toadflax because of their preference for yellow toadflax.  相似文献

Herbivory and pollination are important determinants of female reproductive success in flowering plants. Plants must interact with herbivores and flower visitors simultaneously and interaction with one may alter the outcome of the interaction with the other. These indirect effects can have dramatic impacts on plant fitness. The purpose of this study was to examine whether the stem-boring weevil Mecinus janthiniformis (Curculionidae: Coleoptera) affects flower visitation rate and seed set of the exotic plant Dalmatian toadflax (Linaria dalmatica (L.) Mill. Scrophulariaceae). We compared the flower production, flower morphology, visitation rate, fruit production, and pollen limitation on Dalmatian toadflax plants with and without larval feeding by M. janthiniformis. Feeding by M. janthiniformis reduced the number of flowers and per plant visitation rate, and there was a significant interaction between herbivory and flower number suggesting that the change in visitation rate was not solely a function of a reduction in flower abundance. Herbivory also had direct negative impacts on the reproductive success of Dalmatian toadflax. Total flower and fruit production decreased by over 30 % in plants attacked by M. janthiniformis. However, plants with M. janthiniformis were not more pollen-limited than those without M. janthiniformis. This suggests that herbivory had primarily direct effects female reproductive success.  相似文献

Although some introduced plants arrive into their new range without their generalist and specialist herbivores, for others, their herbivores arrive prior to, with, or after the introduction of the plant, reestablishing the link between natural enemies and invaders in the introduced range. Research documenting the effects of adventitiously introduced herbivores on their target plants in the introduced range, and the mechanisms by which those effects occur, can provide insight into potential biological weed control. We studied the effects of an accidentally introduced beetle Brachypterolus pulicarius on the growth and reproduction of its host, the invasive plant Linaria vulgaris (yellow toadflax), growing under field conditions across multiple years and sites in western Colorado, USA. We found that feeding by B. pulicarius on L. vulgaris was variable among 3 years (2002–2004) and across eight local sites. Part of the variation in damage was explained by ramet density; sites with greater ramet density experienced a higher proportion of damage. In an observational study across 2 years, damage was positively correlated with estimates of sexual reproduction, ramet growth, and clonal shoot production. However, opposite trends were observed in an experiment; damage by B. pulicarius decreased estimates of sexual reproduction. Differences between the results of the observational and experimental studies were likely driven by selective feeding by B. pulicarius on larger ramets. Nonetheless, the ability of B. pulicarius to control established L. vulgaris population growth remains uncertain under the environmental conditions we studied. In both the observational and experimental study, B. pulicarius did not affect L. vulgaris survival, and we found no evidence that established L. vulgaris populations were seed limited, suggesting that reductions in seeds may not translate into demographic changes in heavily infested populations. Interactions among insect foraging behavior, individual plant responses to damage, and the demographic consequences of seed input may help to explain the varying degrees to which herbivores affect plants and populations in this and other systems.  相似文献

The effects of two entomopathogenic fungal endophytes, Beauveria bassiana and Purpureocillium lilacinum (formerly Paecilomyces lilacinus), were assessed on the reproduction of cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover (Homoptera:Aphididae), through in planta feeding trials. In replicate greenhouse and field trials, cotton plants (Gossypium hirsutum) were inoculated as seed treatments with two concentrations of B. bassiana or P. lilacinum conidia. Positive colonization of cotton by the endophytes was confirmed through potato dextrose agar (PDA) media plating and PCR analysis. Inoculation and colonization of cotton by either B. bassiana or P. lilacinum negatively affected aphid reproduction over periods of seven and 14 days in a series of greenhouse trials. Field trials were conducted in the summers of 2012 and 2013 in which cotton plants inoculated as seed treatments with B. bassiana and P. lilacinum were exposed to cotton aphids for 14 days. There was a significant overall effect of endophyte treatment on the number of cotton aphids per plant. Plants inoculated with B. bassiana had significantly lower numbers of aphids across both years. The number of aphids on plants inoculated with P. lilacinum exhibited a similar, but non-significant, reduction in numbers relative to control plants. We also tested the pathogenicity of both P. lilacinum and B. bassiana strains used in the experiments against cotton aphids in a survival experiment where 60% and 57% of treated aphids, respectively, died from infection over seven days versus 10% mortality among control insects. Our results demonstrate (i) the successful establishment of P. lilacinum and B. bassiana as endophytes in cotton via seed inoculation, (ii) subsequent negative effects of the presence of both target endophytes on cotton aphid reproduction using whole plant assays, and (iii) that the P. lilacinum strain used is both endophytic and pathogenic to cotton aphids. Our results illustrate the potential of using these endophytes for the biological control of aphids and other herbivores under greenhouse and field conditions.  相似文献

Dalmatian toadflax (Linaria dalmatica (L.) Mill.) is an important invasive plant on rangelands throughout western North America. In 1991, the stem-mining weevil, Mecinus janthinus Germar, was introduced into Canada from Europe as a classical biological control agent to reduce toadflax densities and improve rangelands, particularly in British Columbia. To determine if the program was a success at a regional level, this paper answers three key questions: (1) has M. janthinus spread throughout the study area, (2) is M. janthinus causing a decline in toadflax plant size or density at the regional scale, and (3) has the distribution of toadflax plants changed following M. janthinus introduction? These questions are answered by combining historical survey data and mensurative experimental data on plant and weevil densities across a 40,000 km2 area in southern British Columbia. The results show that through a combination of intentional redistribution and natural dispersal weevils have spread throughout the study area. Stem densities at naturally colonized sites and historical release sites were equally low. Across weevil populations between 3 and 10 years old, weevil densities peaked in the eighth year, and there was a negative relationship between weevil density and stem length. Between 2000 and 2007, toadflax patches were found to both decrease in density and become more fragmented over time, with 15% of patches disappearing completely. These findings show that M. janthinus has had a significant negative impact on both the density and distribution of Dalmatian toadflax throughout a large part of its range in British Columbia.  相似文献

The monophagous weevil Rhinoncomimus latipes Korotyaev (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) has been introduced into North America as a biological control agent for the invasive vine mile-a-minute weed, Persicaria perfoliata (L.) H. Gross. This weevil has been shown to reduce the percent cover of mile-a-minute and the number of seed clusters produced, as well as altering the phenology of seed production. However, prior work has not examined the potential impact of the weevil on seed viability and numbers of seeds per cluster. When both adult and larval weevils fed on whole plants in the greenhouse, seed production and fruit maturation were delayed and both the total number of seeds and number of seeds per cluster were reduced. Overall, weevils in greenhouse cages reduced the reproductive potential of P. perfoliata by 35%. When adult weevils were confined on developing seed clusters in the field, the number of seeds produced per cluster, the weight of seeds produced, and seed viability all decreased. Overall, the number of viable seeds per cluster was reduced by 37% in the presence of adult weevils. Taken together, these findings demonstrate that this biological control agent can have important impacts on the reproductive potential of its target weed through mechanisms that have not previously been shown.  相似文献

Dalmatian toadflax has been a target for biological control in North America since the 1960s. The stem-mining weevil Mecinus janthiniformis was first released in Canada and the western United States in the mid-1990s. Since 2007, a citizen-based monitoring program in Idaho, USA has supplemented data collection to help evaluate the impact of M. janthiniformis on Dalmatian toadflax abundance and assess changes in the surrounding plant community. We monitored and analysed trends in toadflax, weevil, and the plant community abundance following weevil releases at the regional and site level (34 sites) across the state of Idaho, USA. Significant declines in toadflax cover and stem density were recorded across the majority of sites. Weevil populations have established at all release sites. The mechanistic model indicated that the population dynamics of toadflax at our sites are negatively affected by M. janthiniformis abundance. When averaged across the region, 15 years after weevil release, Dalmatian toadflax stem density and cover declined by 93 and 84%, respectively. We observed significant declines in toadflax abundance in over 75% of the sites. Changes to the surrounding plant community following weevil releases were less consistent among sites. At the regional scale we found evidence for an overall increase in average cover of native perennial grasses and other exotic weeds (primarily annual grasses and exotic forbs) but a decline in native forbs.  相似文献

Mungbean (Vigna radiata (L) Wilczek cv ML — 267) is a recalcitrant grain legume species. Direct multiple shoots were developed from the cotyledonary node explants of 2-day-old in vitro grown seedlings of mungbean. Maximum number of shoots (an average 12.1 shoots per explant) was obtained on a medium containing MS salts, B5 vitamins and 5.0 mg l?1 BAP. A medium with lower BAP concentration appeared suitable for rapid shoot elongation. The elongated shoots were rooted on 0.2 mg l?1 NAA. The rooted plants were acclimatized under field conditions. The survival of the plants in the greenhouse was 90 %. Plants flowered and set seed normally.  相似文献

The combined effects of herbivory and water stress on growth and reproduction of mile-a-minute weed (Persicaria perfoliata (L.) H. Gross) were investigated in greenhouse trials over two years, with well-watered or water-limited plants either exposed or not exposed to herbivory by the mile-a-minute weevil (Rhinoncomimus latipes Korotyaev). Moisture limitation and weevil herbivory significantly reduced the number of seeds produced by P. perfoliata, with the fewest seeds produced when both factors were present. Seed weight was reduced by moisture limitation and weevil herbivory the second year, and seed viability was reduced by herbivory both years. Plant biomass was lower both years under conditions of water limitation, with an additional effect of herbivory the second year. Well-watered plants the second year also produced substantially more weevils than water-limited plants by the end of the season. Results are consistent with field observations suggesting that years of high rainfall allow resurgence of P. perfoliata plant populations that were previously suppressed by R. latipes. An additional environmental chamber trial assessed the interaction between the weed and weevil at two different temperatures. Here, plant mortality occurred only at the higher temperature with weevil herbivory, suggesting that herbivory has a greater negative effect on P. perfoliata under warm conditions. Additional studies on temperature effects are needed for a more complete understanding of interactions between P. perfoliata and R. latipes under different abiotic conditions.  相似文献

The endocarpic microorganisms of peanut fruit dried in either a random windrow (plants left as they fell from the digger) or an inverted windrow (plants inverted to expose fruit to sunlight) were different from that of freshly dug fruit. Chaetomium, Penicillium, Trichoderma, Rhizoctonia, and Fusarium were the dominant fungi found associated with shells (pericarp) of freshly dug fruit. The dominant fungi of shells of windrowed fruit included Chaetomium, Rhizoctonia, Fusarium, Sclerotium, and Alternaria. Seeds of freshly dug fruit were dominated by Penicillium and Aspergillus. The only dominant species in seed of windrowed fruit was Penicillium. Microorganisms were isolated from shells and seed of freshly dug fruit at a frequency of 79% and 52%, respectively. The percentage of infestation was reduced by drying in the field. This was particularly true of the inverted windrow. The proportion of shells and seed infested with a microorganism was reduced 13% and 36%, respectively, after field drying for 5 to 7 days in random and inverted windrows. Microorganisms were isolated much more frequently from shell pieces (73%) than from seed (36%).  相似文献

Sex-specific interactions with herbivores and pollinators have been observed in female and male plants of dioecious species. However, only a limited number of studies have revised sex-specific patterns in mycorrhizal symbiosis. To test whether female and male plants of Antennaria dioica differ in their relationship with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, we examined the temporal and spatial variation in AM fungi in female, male and non-reproductive A. dioica plants in three natural populations in Finland during flowering and after seed production. Our results are consistent with previous studies both under greenhouse and field conditions with the same species showing differences in AM colonization between the sexes linked with allocation to reproduction. Taken together, the results indicate that there is a sex-specific interaction between A. dioica and AM fungi. Overall, females have a greater investment in AM fungi, likely to enhance their uptake of soil nutrients and support the reproduction by seed.  相似文献

We examined the effects of self-pollination and resource addition to maternal plants of Wild Lupine on seed production in the field, and on offspring performance in the greenhouse. Although 24% of flowers set fruits when open-pollinated, only 11% of flowers set fruits when self-pollinated. Self-pollination significantly reduced fruit and seed production per inflorescence and increased aborted seeds per fruit. Resource addition to maternal plants significantly increased fruit and seed number in the field. Moreover, selfed plants exhibited greater variability in seed production in the absence of resource addition to the maternal plant. We planted a total of 1,306 of the seeds from this experiment in the greenhouse. While self-pollination did not affect the proportion of seeds emerging, it slowed seedling emergence by 5–10%, and reduced offspring biomass by 25–35%. Interestingly, resource addition to the maternal plants significantly decreased proportion of seedlings surviving after 5 months. Moreover, offspring from maternal plants with resource addition expressed more inbreeding depression in the seedling stage compared to offspring from maternal plants without resource addition, for which more inbreeding depression occurred during seed maturation and emergence. These results indicate that conservation efforts using benign environments to increase number of seeds or offspring may face compensating reductions in survivorship at other life stages.  相似文献

The efficacy of abamectin as a seed treatment for control of Meloidogyne incognita on cotton was evaluated in greenhouse, microplot, and field trials in 2002 and 2003. Treatments ranging from 0 to 100 g abamectin/100 kg seed were evaluated. In greenhouse tests 35 d after planting (DAP), plants from seed treated with abamectin were taller than plants from nontreated seed, and root galling severity and nematode reproduction were lower where treated seed were used. The number of second stage juveniles that had entered the roots of plants from seed treated with 100 g abamectin/kg seed was lower during the first 14 DAP than with nontreated seed. In microplots tests, seed treatment with abamectin and soil application of aldicarb at 840 g/kg of soil reduced the number of juveniles penetrating seedling roots during the first 14 DAP compared to the nontreated seedlings. In field plots, population densities of M. incognita were lower 14 DAP in plots that received seed treated with abamectin at 100 g/kg seed than where aldicarb (5.6 kg/ha) was applied at planting. Population densities were comparable for all treatments, including the nontreated controls, at both 21 DAP and harvest. Root galling severity did not differ among treatments at harvest.  相似文献

One of the challenges facing orchid conservationists is to get a better understanding of seed parent fecundity. This can be especially laborious for orchids whose seed is difficult to germinate. Mature seeds ofCypripedium calceolusvar.pubescens(Willd.) Correll (Orchidaceae) have been reported to require 8 weeks pre-chilling at 4°C and a further month at 20°C to induce germination, but seeds prematurely harvested at 7–8 weeks post-pollination germinate asymbiotically without chilling in less than 1 month. Mature seeds ofEpipactis helleborine(L.) Crantz (Orchidaceae) have also presented a challenge but the identification of plants whose seeds are quick and easy to germinate has provided us with a tool to study patterns of production of this seed class. Preliminary field experiments suggest that timing of pollination in these two taxa is critical for the development of seed. When seeds from capsules ofC. calceolusvar.pubescensharvested 7 weeks after pollination were examined, the proportion of fully mature embryos increased with increasing anthesis-pollination interval over the first 10 days. Paired flowers from five genets xenogamously hand-pollinated at 2-day intervals from the second day after anthesis until the flowers wilted were significantly less likely to produce fruits as the flowers aged but the flower age at which this occurred varied between genets. The germinability of seeds from different pollen and seed parent combinations was tested on eight different media formulations and over a range of post-anthesis and post-pollination intervals. Different aged seeds germinated variably, the post-anthesis interval being the most reliable predictor of germination outcomes. Intercrossing of plants ofC. calceolusvar.pubescenssuggests that seed production and germinability are maternally mediated traits. WithE. helleborine, germinable seed can be produced both by self- and by cross-pollination of selected plants but we have observed an influence of flower position in the inflorescence on self-compatibility and on the production of the easy-to-germinate seed class. The timing of pollination in these two unrelated orchids has a considerable influence upon seed production and seed quality in plants of established fecundity. These findings suggest that flower age at pollination must be considered when interpreting similar studies in the Orchidaceae.  相似文献

Pseudomonas fluorescens strains antagonistic to Sarocladium oryzae, the sheath rot (Sh-R) pathogen of rice (Oryza sativa L.), were evaluated in greenhouse and field tests for suppression of Sh-R severity and enhancement of grain yields of rice. Imprints of rice seedlings and a direct-observation technique of staining roots with fluorochromes confirmed the association of P. fluorescens with roots and the ability of the strain to move along shoot tips. In greenhouse tests, P. fluorescens-treated rice plants (cv. IR 20) showed a 54% reduction in the length of Sh-R lesions. In three field tests, treatment with P. fluorescens reduced the severity of Sh-R by 20 to 42% in five rice cultivars. Bacterization of rice cultivars with P. fluorescens enhanced plant height, number of tillers, and grain yields from 3 to 160%.  相似文献

The potential roles of seed and microsite limitation in local spatial spread of the invasive grass Microstegium vimineum were experimentally investigated in a woodland and open lawn in central New Jersey, USA. Plots (30 × 30 cm) in three sites previously unoccupied by M. vimineum for at least 8 years (woodland interior, woodland edge, and open lawn) were sown with ~262 M. vimineum seeds in early spring 2008. Seedling emergence, density, summer growth and autumn reproduction were compared to plots in a nearby control population where natural recruitment occurred. Seedling emergence was greatest in the open lawn (54% of seeds sown) where plants showed the greatest growth and reproduction due to high light availability. Seedling emergence was lowest in the woodland interior (24%) and edge sites (9%), and growth and reproduction were greatly reduced there (relative to the control). Plots in the open lawn supported a consistently high density of M. vimineum (>1,000 plants per m2) through the growing period (April to October). The number of seeds in both cleistogamous and chasmogamous spikelets was correlated with shoot dry mass and thus, total seed production was greatest in the sunny open lawn where plants were largest, despite high density there. Across all sites, plants in plots at the highest densities produced the most seeds. Total seed production correlated with levels of light, but not soil moisture. Both seed availability and microsite limitation may reduce the probability of establishment of new M. vimineum populations into previously unoccupied sites. Intraspecific density does not negatively affect survival or reproduction. Light and soil moisture can be limiting abiotic factors in some areas, but poor, natural seed dispersal limits the distribution of this invasive species on a local scale.  相似文献

Exogenous application of cytokinin to raceme tissues of soybean(Glycine max(L.) Merr.) has been shown to stimulate flower productionand to prevent flower abortion. The effects of these hormoneapplications have been ascertained for treated tissues, butthe effects of cytokinins on total seed yields in treated plantshave not been evaluated. Our objectives were to examine theeffects of systemic cytokinin applications on soybean yieldsusing an experimental line of soybeans, SD-87001, that has beenshown to be highly sensitive to exogenous cytokinin application.Soybeans were grown hydroponically or in pots in the greenhouse, and 6-benzylaminopurine (BA) was introduced into the xylem streamthrough a cotton wick for 2 weeks during anthesis. After theplants had matured, the number of pods, seeds per pod, and thetotal seed weight per plant were measured. In the greenhouse, application of 3.4 x 10-7 moles of BA resulted in a 79% increasein seed yield compared with controls. Results of field trialsshowed much greater variability within treatments, with consistent, but non-significant increases in seed number and total yieldsof about 3%. Data suggest that cytokinin levels play a significantrole in determining total yield in soybeans, and that increasingcytokinin concentrations in certain environments may resultin increased total seed production. The consequences of selfing were examined for a population of self-compatible, protandrous, Sabatia angularis L. (Gentianaceae). Field-collected plants were hand-pollinated in the greenhouse to produce selfed progeny and outcrossed progeny from parents separated by a maximum of 5 m (near-outcross) and 85 m (far-outcross) in the field. Self, near-outcross, and far-outcross half sib progeny were grown in the greenhouse, a garden plot, and their native habitat. Progeny were compared by multiplicative fitness functions based on seed production per hand-pollination, seed germination, rosette formation, survival to reproduction, and reproduction in each environment. Variation in reproduction among progeny groups was influenced by the environment in which they were grown. Significant inbreeding depression was detected between the self and far-outcross progeny in each environment. Only the natural environment demonstrated a greater than 50% reduction in relative fitness of self compared to near-outcross progeny. This is of biological relevance since near-outcross hand-pollinations occurred within the range of pollen and seed dispersal suggesting that inbreeding depression in S. angularis is strong enough to maintain outcrossing in the study population. In the field, the far-outcross progeny outperformed the near-outcross progeny suggesting local population substructure. The magnitude of the inbreeding depression expressed among the self progeny was the greatest in the field, intermediate in the garden plot, and the least in the greenhouse.  相似文献

We conducted three experiments to examine the influence of ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B; 280–320 nm) exposure on reproduction in Brassica rapa (Brassicaceae). Plants were grown in a greenhouse under three biologically effective UV-B levels that simulated either an ambient stratospheric ozone level (control), 16% (“low enhanced”), or 32% (“high enhanced”) ozone depletion levels at Morgantown, WV, USA in mid-March. In the first experiment, we examined whether UV-B level during plant growth influenced in vivo pollen production and viability, and flower production. Pollen production and viability per flower were reduced by ≈50% under both enhanced UV-B levels relative to ambient controls. While plants under high-enhanced UV-B produced over 40% more flowers than plants under the two lower UV-B treatments, whole-plant production of viable pollen was reduced under high-enhanced UV-B to 17% of that of ambient controls. Whole-plant production of viable pollen was reduced under low-enhanced UV-B to 34% of ambient controls. In the second experiment, we collected pollen from plants under the three UV-B levels and examined whether source-plant UV-B exposure influenced in vitro pollen germination and viability. Pollen from plants under both enhanced-UV-B treatments had initially lower germination and viability than pollen from the ambient level. After in vitro exposure to the high-enhanced UV-B levels for 6 h, viability of the pollen from plants grown under ambient UV-B was reduced from 65 to 18%. In contrast, viability of the pollen from plants grown under both enhanced UV-B treatments was reduced to a much lesser extent: only from ≈43 to 22%. Thus, ambient source-plant pollen was more sensitive to enhanced UV-B exposure. In the third experiment, we used pollen collected from source plants under the three UV-B levels to fertilize plants growing under ambient-UV-B levels, and assessed subsequent seed production and germination. Seed abortion rates were higher in plants pollinated with pollen from the enhanced UV-B treatments, than from ambient UV-B. Despite this, seed yield (number and mass) per plant was similar, regardless of the UV-B exposure of their pollen source. Our findings demonstrate that enhanced UV-B levels associated with springtime ozone depletion events have the capacity to substantially reduce viable pollen production, and could ultimately reduce reproductive success of B. rapa.  相似文献

Plant spatial patterns critically influence community dynamics, including plant interactions, resource distribution, and community invasibility. Research suggests that resistance of western US plant communities to further invasion by the exotic annual grass Bromus tectorum may be linked to the positions of, and spacing between, perennial plants. In particular, gaps between aggregated clusters of perennial plants may facilitate B. tectorum invasion by providing safe sites for seed germination and establishment. We tested the effects of random, regular, and aggregated bunchgrass patterns, manipulated at both community (plot) and neighborhood scales, on B. tectorum biomass and spikelet production after experimental seed addition. We found strong evidence of treatment effects on both biomass and spikelets, which varied between treatments by approximately 2.5-fold. Mean biomass and spikelet counts were lowest in plots in which bunchgrasses were aggregated at both community and neighborhood scales, likely due to the increased competition. Although not statistically distinguishable from most other treatments, B. tectorum biomass and spikelet counts were highest in plots with bunchgrass patterns that were random at the community scale and aggregated at the neighborhood scale. These plots were characterized by relatively large gaps between bunchgrass clusters, suggesting that B. tectorum may exploit gaps between aggregated perennial plants. Our results support the emerging hypothesis that community resistance to B. tectorum invasion could be increased through manipulation of perennial vegetation to reduce basal gap size and connectivity.  相似文献
