Abstract

Many plant diaspores dispersing by epizoochory bear special structures, such as burrs with hooks, which are responsible for the mechanical interlocking with animal fur or feathers. The number, dimensions and distribution of the interlocking structures on the diaspore can strongly vary depending on the plant species. In this study, to evaluate the interlocking ability of distantly related plants having different diaspore morphologies, the contact separation force (CSF) of single burrs was measured in Arctium lappa, Bidens tripartita, Desmodium sp., Uncinia uncinata and Xanthium strumarium. This force is required to separate the single burr from interlocking with the loop. Usually in the experiment, the burr was broken after separation. The CSFs differed significantly, ranging from 7.07 to 820.94?mN, among the five taxa studied. Six morphometrical variables were measured from each burr and the correlations between the CSFs and these morphometrical variables were analyzed. We have shown that (1) the burr length, (2) the diameter of the distal part and (3) the hook span had significant influences on the CSF. The comparison between the CSF and the fruit weight indicated that single burrs of all taxa studied could bear at least 100-fold weight of the diaspore.  相似文献

Euphorbiaceae s. str. and Phyllanthaceae were earlier components of Euphorbiaceae. This separation was mainly based on molecular data and also on morphological characteristics. Nevertheless, the structure and development of fruits are poorly investigated in these families and considering this, fruits (pericarp and seed) of Euphorbia hyssopifolia L., Croton glandulosus L. (Euphorbiaceae), Phyllanthus niruri L. and Phyllanthus tenellus Roxb. (Phyllanthaceae) were structurally studied to see in what respects they are similar or different. The Euphorbiaceae schizocarps present two meristems (adaxial and subadaxial) in the ovary wall, but the adaxial meristem is entirely lacking in Phyllanthus fruits. The seeds have an exotegmen with Malpighian palisade cells in Euphorbiaceae species and a short palisade in Phyllanthus. Some special structural features, such as nucellar beak, anatropous ovules and schizocarp fruits were found in all the species and constitute a unique combination. From the present results, it appears that there is no significant difference in fruit and seed development between the studied Euphorbiaceae and Phyllanthaceae.  相似文献

Frugivory and seed dispersal have been poorly studied in Neotropical freshwater fishes. We studied frugivory and seed dispersal by the piraputanga fish (Brycon hilarii, Characidae) in the Formoso River, Bonito, western Brazil. We examined the stomach contents of 87 fish and found the diet of piraputanga consisted of 24% animal prey (arthropods, snails, and vertebrates), 31% seeds/fruits and 45% other plant material (algae/macrophytes/leaves/flowers). The piraputangas fed on 12 fruit species, and were considered as seed dispersers of eight species. Fruits with soft seeds larger than 10 mm were triturated, but all species with small seeds (e.g. Ficus, Psidium) and one species with large hard seed (Chrysophyllum gonocarpum) were dispersed. Piraputangas eat more fruits in the dry season just before the migration, but not during the spawning season. Fish length had a positive relation with the presence of fruits in their guts. The gallery forest of the Formoso River apparently does not have any plant species that depend exclusively on B. hilarii for seed dispersal because all fruit species are also dispersed by birds and mammals. Based on seed size and husk hardness of the riparian plant community of Formoso River, however, the piraputangas may potentially disperse at least 50% of the riparian fleshy fruit species and may be particularly important for long-distance dispersal. Therefore, overfishing or other anthropogenic disturbances to the populations of piraputanga may have negative consequences for the riparian forests in this region.  相似文献

Mammalian frugivory is a distinctive biotic interaction of tropical forests; however, most efforts in the Neotropics have focused on cases of animals foraging in the forest canopy, in particular primates and bats. In contrast much less is known about this interaction when it involves fruits deposited on the forest floor and terrestrial mammals. We conducted a camera-trapping survey to analyze the characteristics of the mammalian ensembles visiting fruits of Licania platypus and Pouteria sapota deposited on the forest floor in a well preserved tropical rainforest of Mexico. Both tree species produce large fruits but contrast in their population densities and fruit chemical composition. In particular, we expected that more species of terrestrial mammals would consume P. sapota fruits due to its higher pulp:seed ratio, lower availability and greater carbohydrate content. We monitored fruits at the base of 13 trees (P. sapota, n = 4 and L. platypus, n = 9) using camera-traps. We recorded 13 mammal species from which we had evidence of 8 consuming or removing fruits. These eight species accounted for 70% of the species of mammalian frugivores active in the forest floor of our study area. The ensemble of frugivores associated with L. platypus (6 spp.) was a subset of that associated with P. sapota (8 spp). Large body-sized species such as Tapirus bairdii, Pecari tajacu and Cuniculus paca were the mammals more frequently interacting with fruits of the focal species. Our results further our understanding of the characteristics of the interaction between terrestrial mammalian frugivores and large-sized fruits, helping to gain a more balanced view of its importance across different tropical forests and providing a baseline to compare against defaunated forests.

Fruit selection, i.e., the consumption of fruits disproportionately to their availability, results from the interaction between diet preferences and ecological factors that modify them. We assessed the importance of functional fruit traits to explain fruit selection by birds in Andean subtropical forests, taking into account temporal variation in trait distribution in the assembly of available fruits. During 2 yr, we measured the abundance of ripe fruits and their consumption by birds in a 6‐ha plot during 11 bimonthly samplings, and we used 17 phenological, morphological, and nutritional traits to characterize fruits selected by four bird species. Fruit selection was pervasive year‐round, highly variable over time and across bird species. Fruit species were selected over time periods shorter than their ripening phenology, and the selection of fruits with particular traits was specific to the fruit‐eating species. Maximization in pulp reward per consumed fruit seems to be the main driving force behind fruit selection, indicating that birds select fruits with traits that directly affect net energy gain. Our results can be interpreted in a framework of a hierarchy of foraging decisions, under which the spatiotemporal context of the fruiting environment modifies the relative intake rates of a particular fruit, while the ability to discriminate fruit contents becomes increasingly important on a smaller dimension. We show that fruit‐selection properties are contingent on specific fruit traits and particular spatiotemporal conditions, which modify the structure of mutualistic interactions.  相似文献

Frugivorous animals play a major role in dispersing tropical, and to a lesser extent, temperate tree species. In order to attract potential seed dispersers, plants generally offer a reward of fleshy fruit pulp. Criteria for fruit choice by avian frugivores are influenced by a number of non-nutritive (e.g. fruit size and colour) factors; and nutritional composition of the fruit. There is a paucity of nutritional composition and other fruit trait data of indigenous South African fruit. This information is necessary in order to determine which frugivores are likely to ingest which fruits and consequently act as potential seed dispersal agents. This information would provide us with an understanding of the inter-relationships between indigenous fruit and frugivores in South Africa. Consequently nutritional composition was investigated in various indigenous fruit species that avian frugivores feed on. Fruits were collected from 38 indigenous tree species found in KwaZulu-Natal Afromontane and coastal forests. Pulp was freeze-dried to constant mass and then analysed for sugar, lipid and protein content; and for water content determination. Fruit width in this study ranged from 4 mm (Searsia rehmanniana and Trema orientalis) to 40 mm (Annona senegalensis, Ficus sur and Xylotheca kraussiana). Of the fruits examined in this study 29% were black and 43% were red when ripe. Most (84%) fruit species analysed for sugar content were hexose dominant with 50% being fructose and 34% being glucose dominant. Only 16% of the fruit species analysed were sucrose dominant. Fruits in this study were generally observed to be high (mean: 68.1 ± 3.3%; n = 30) in water content; and low in protein and lipid content respectively (mean: 8.2 ± 0.5%; 9.3 ± 2.2%; n = 30) indicating that these fruit species could be considered as nutrient-dilute. Future studies need to determine the nutritional composition of the remaining indigenous South African fruit in order to develop a comprehensive database as well as examining non-nutritive factors.  相似文献

Ganaspis individuals parasitizing Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura), a pest of fruit crops, were examined for host use and molecular and morphological differences from those attacking D. lutescens Okada and some other Drosophila species that breed on fermenting fruits. Wild cherry fruits were collected in the suburbs of Tokyo, and drosophilid pupae obtained from these fruits were examined for parasitism. Drosophila suzukii was the only drosophilid species infesting fresh wild cherry fruits, and Ganaspis individuals were the major parasitoids attacking D. suzukii in wild cherry fruits. In parasitism experiments, these Ganaspis individuals parasitized D. suzukii larvae in fresh cherry fruits, but did not parasitize those in Drosophila medium. In addition, they did not parasitize larvae of some other fruit-feeding Drosophila species even when these occurred in fresh cherry fruit. These Ganaspis individuals parasitizing D. suzukii were different from those parasitizing D. lutescens and some other drosophilids in nucleotide sequences of the COI gene, as well as in ITS1 and ITS2. They were also different in forewing and antenna morphology, although they showed some overlap in morphological traits. They are tentatively assigned as the suzukii- and lutescens-associated types of G. xanthopoda Ashmead. In the present field survey, Leptopilina japonica Novkovi? & Kimura and some Asobara species were also observed to attack D. suzukii larvae in wild cherry fruit.  相似文献

In the late growing season of apples, most eggs of the codling moth, Cydia pomonella L. (Lepidoptera, Tortricidae), of the second and third generations are deposited directly on fruits. The apple fruit surface is densely covered by three-dimensional micro- and nanoprojections, the epicuticular wax crystals, emerging from an underlying wax film. These epicuticular waxes render the apple fruit surface hydrophobic, which could affect the attachment of insect legs and eggs to it. A better survival of the codling moth offspring is expected to be ensured by the selection of suitable oviposition sites by females, as well as by a proper adhesion of deposited eggs to these sites. In this study, we investigated egg adhesion of the codling moth to the fruit surface of different cultivars of the domestic apple, Malus domestica Borkh., by measuring the pull-off force required to detach eggs from fruits. Since surface characteristics may influence insect egg adhesion, the information about morphological and physicochemical properties of the fruit surface is crucial for understanding oviposition site selection by females. In the present study, surface morphology, wettability, and free surface energy of the apple cultivars ‘Boskoop’, ‘Elstar’, ‘Golden Delicious’, ‘Jonica’, and ‘Topaz’ were analyzed. Eggs adhered tightly to the fruit surface of all apple cultivars tested: pull-off forces averaged 63.9 mN. These forces are four- to tenfold stronger than those previously measured on adaxial and abaxial leaf surfaces of the identical apple cultivars. The mechanisms used by the moth to fix its eggs on the waxy surface of apple fruits, and the influence of fruit surface properties on egg glue adhesion are discussed. Furthermore, the results are debated in the context of the oviposition site selection by females, and its role in offspring survival of the second and third generations of the codling moth.  相似文献

The genus Arachis encompasses 80 validly described species and the most striking characteristics is the geocarpic fruit, which occurs in every species of the genus. Taking into consideration that much of the current knowledge about this subject is based on the anatomy and morphology of A. hypogaea, a cultivated species with fruits that were modified during domestication, the objective of this study was to learn more about the development of the geocarpic fruits of wild species of Arachis (A. paraguariensis, A. pintoi, A. stenosperma, and A. tuberosa), and to provide characters that can be used in future phylogenetic works about this group. Buds, flowers and fruits at different stages of development were collected and processed according to standard methods used for light field, interferential contrast, and scanning electron microscopy. Although the geocarpic fruits of the wild species share many adaptations, this study identified potentially diagnostic infrageneric characters, such as the type of trichomes on the pericarp, the presence of sclerenchyma caps in the bundles of the pericarp of the seed chamber of the fruit and isthmus, the presence of tracheoid cells in the pith of the isthmus, the location of crystalliferous cells, the presence of tannins in the cells of mesocarp outer layers, and the presence of projections in the sclerenchyma tissue. In addition, this article brings some inferences about functional characteristics of this peculiar geocarpic fruit.  相似文献

Structural and regulatory genes control fruit colors in plants. Real-time quantitative PCR results showed significantly higher expression levels of structural genes (FpCHS, FpDFR, FpANS, and FpUFGT) as well as of the regulatory gene MYB10 in red fruits of Fragaria pentaphylla compared to white fruits. These genes were strongly associated with anthocyanin accumulation within fruits. The full-length sequence of the FpDFR gene in red fruits of F. pentaphylla had a length of 2080 bp, was separated by five introns, and shared 95% homology with the F. vesca DFR sequence. Twenty-seven SNPs were detected in the FpDFR gDNA sequences between red and white fruits. Among these, transition substitutions were more frequent than transversions (66.7% vs. 33.3%), and a larger number of nucleotide variants existed in introns compared to exons (70.4% vs. 29.6%). A Chi-square test showed only three SNPs significantly associated with fruit color. Combined with structural analyses of the FpDFR protein and an expression analysis of the anthocyanin pathway genes, these results indicate that trans-regulation might contribute to color control in F. pentaphylla.  相似文献

There is a global threat of invasive alien plants to biodiversity and ecosystem services. Of these, fleshy-fruited species are credited as some of the worst invaders and this is largely due to their mutualisms with local dispersers. Comparative studies between invasive and indigenous species can shed new insights into the traits which promote invasive plants success over their indigenous counterparts. This study compared the germination success of indigenous Solanum giganteum and invasive Solanum mauritianum, following ingestion by Red-winged Starlings (Onychognathus morio, Sturnidae) and Speckled Mousebirds (Colius striatus, Coliidae) and compared these with de-pulped seed and whole fruit controls. Nutritive and morphological fruit traits were also considered. Seed retention times were only obtained for Red-winged Starlings on both diets, and these did not differ. For both plant species, ingested and de-pulped seeds had similar germination success and mean daily germination, irrespective of frugivore type. However, pulp removal was important for S. giganteum. The type of avian frugivore affected the onset of germination, with the comparatively larger Red-winged Starlings promoting earlier germination of both S. mauritianum and S. giganteum seeds when compared to their controls, except for de-pulped S. mauritianum. These germinated at the same time as ingested S. mauritianum, but significantly earlier than de-pulped S. giganteum. Speckled Mousebirds consumed more S. mauritianum than S. giganteum, while Red-winged Starlings showed the opposite. While S. mauritianum had larger yellow fruits, their seeds were smaller, lighter and more numerous than those in the red fruits of S. giganteum. Furthermore, S. mauritianum fruits contained considerably more sugar content than S. giganteum fruits. In summary, offering greater nutritional rewards and generating greater reproductive outputs than indigenous species, can explain why fleshy-fruited exotics become highly invasive.  相似文献

Alternaria rot has been recently described as an emerging fungal disease of citrus causing significant damage in California groves. A survey was conducted to determine latent infections on fruits, twigs, and leaves and investigate their seasonal patterns during 2019 and 2020. On fruits, latent infections were more associated with the stem end than with the stylar end, except during spring when a significantly high percentage of flowers (86%) had latent infections. Latent infections on twigs varied markedly between years (28% in 2019 and 9.5% in 2020), while Alternaria spp. were also recovered from citrus leaves. Alternaria isolates collected during the survey were identified based on multigene sequence analysis, confirming that Alternaria alternata and Alternaria arborescens are the two species associated with infections of citrus fruits. Of the 23 isolates, 19 were identified as A. alternata and demonstrated the dominance of this species over A. arborescens. Isolates representing populations of these two species were selected as representative isolates for physiological and morphological studies. A. alternata and A. arborescens showed similar conidial dimensions but differed in the number of conidia produced. Growth rates demonstrated that A. alternata grows faster than A. arborescens at all the temperatures evaluated, except at 25 and 35 °C. The growth patterns were similar for both species. The sporulation rate of the Alternaria isolates was influenced differently by temperature. This parameter also influenced conidial germination and appressorium formation, and no significant differences were observed between Alternaria species. Pathogenicity and aggressiveness tests on detached fruit demonstrated the ability of A. alternata and A. arborescens to cause internal lesions and produce fruit drop in the orchards with no quantitative differences between them (disease severity indexes of 58 and 68%, respectively). The fungicide sensitivity tests showed that DMI fungicides are the most effective fungicides in reducing mycelial growth. The SDHI fungicides had intermediate activity against the mycelial growth but also suppressed spore germination. The spore germination assay suggested that some of the isolates included in this study might have some level of resistance to QoI and SDHI fungicides. The findings of this study provide new information about the pathogens associated with the excessive fruit drop recently observed in some California citrus groves.  相似文献

Colletotrichum spp. are causal agents of anthracnose disease in chili fruits and other tropical crops. The disease is increasing in chili fruits in Thailand and significantly reduces fruit quality and fruit production. Forty-eight isolates of Colletotrichum spp. associated with chili anthracnose were collected from different areas of Thailand during 2010–2015. Based on morphological characteristic identification, 10 isolates were shown to belong to the C. gloeosporioides species complex, 24 isolates belong to the C. acutatum species complex and 14 isolates to C. capsici. For molecular identification, two primer sets, ITS1/ITS4 and ACT528/ACT738, were used for amplification of the internal transcribed spacer of rRNA gene (ITS1–5.8S–ITS2) and partial region actin gene (ACT), respectively. The phylogenetic analysis of individual and combined ITS region and actin nucleotide sequences identified the collected isolates into 4 species: C. gloeosporioides, C. siamense, C. acutatum and C. capsici. The pathogenicity test demonstrated that all four species were pathogenic on intact unwounded and healthy fruits. These results indicated that C. capsici, C. acutatum, C. gloeosporioides and C. siamense were the causal agents of chili anthracnose disease.  相似文献

In central Chile, Rhagoletis brncici and R. conversa, can be found in sympatry, associated with the fruit of their native host plants: Solanum tomatillo and S. nigrum (Solanaceae), respectively. Third-stage larvae must emerge from its host in search of pupation sites, and during this period larvae must find an appropriate pupation microhabitat while avoiding predation and adverse abiotic factors. In this study, we explored whether these sympatric species differ in terms of the timing of their larval exit from the host fruit in search of pupation sites. Field-collected fruits from host plants were checked daily for larval emergence, within 24 h, under laboratory conditions, in order to determine the time of the event. We found that these species differed significantly in their diel larval emergence. For R. brncici, most larvae left the host fruit between late evening and past midnight, meanwhile larvae from R. conversa concentrated their peak of emergence near midnight and early morning. We discuss these findings in terms of the ecological and evolutionary implications of the temporal separation of larval emergence regarding the use of pupation sites, abiotic stress and risk of predation for these sympatric species.  相似文献

Optimal sexual reproduction in relation to fire effects varies in Fabaceae species. Calliandra species have a large investment in reproduction. We investigated the consequences of fire during the fruiting period of Calliandra parviflora Benth., by checking fruit exposure to fire, pre-dispersal seed predator infestation, and the effect of fruit burning on germination. We conducted this study in a floodable savanna in central Brazil, where we collected burnt and unburnt fruits. We measured the fruit and seed mass, and counted the number of damaged and undamaged seeds and live larvae per fruit. We analyzed the seed germination percentage from burnt and unburnt fruits. The burnt fruits presented greater mass than the unburnt fruits, despite their seed mass being similar. The number of damaged seeds per fruit was only slightly higher in burnt compared to unburnt fruits (p = 0.047). The number of larvae on pre-dispersal seeds per fruit varied from 0 to 4 and did not differ between burnt and unburnt fruits. The germination percentage of unburnt fruit seeds (mean = 22 ± 17%), was significantly higher than that of burnt fruit (mean = 3.0 ± 2.0%, p < 0.001). Fire during fruiting or pre-dispersion decreases seed germination from 22 to 3%, but it does not hurt vegetative regeneration or resprout capacity of C. parviflora, which is a facultative seeder. Hence, we suggest that C. parviflora has potential for post-fire restoration in floodable open grassy savannas, in the ecotone between Cerrado and Pantanal, because this species may sprout quickly after first post-fire rains.  相似文献

3D dental microtexture analysis is a powerful tool for reconstructing the diets of extinct primates. This method is based on the comparison of fossils with extant species of known diet. The diets of primates are highly diversified and include fruits, seeds, grass, tree leaves, bark, roots, tubers, and animal resources. Fruits remain the main component in the diets of most primates. We tested whether the proportion of fruit consumed is correlated with dental microtexture. Two methods of microtexture analysis, the scale-sensitive fractal analysis (SSFA) and the Dental Areal Surface Texture Analysis (DASTA; after ISO/FDIS 25178-2), were applied to specimens of eight primate species (Alouatta seniculus, Gorilla gorilla, Lophocebus albigena, Macaca fascicularis, Pan troglodytes, Papio cynocephalus, Pongo abelii, Theropithecus gelada). These species largely differ in the mean annual proportion of fruit (from 0 to 90%) in their diet, as well as in their consumption of other hard items (seeds, bark, and insect cuticles) and of abrasive plants. We find the complexity and heterogeneity of textures (SSFA) to correlate with the proportion of fruits consumed. Textural fill volume (SSFA) indicates the proportion of both fruits and other hard items processed. Furthermore, anisotropy (SSFA) relates to the consumption of abrasive plants like grass and other monocots. ISO parameters valley height, root mean square height, material volume, density of peaks, and closed hill and dale areas (DASTA) describe the functional interaction between food items and enamel facets during mastication. The shallow, plastic deformation of enamel surfaces induced by small hard particles, such as phytoliths or dust, results in flat microtexture relief, whereas the brittle, deep fracture caused by large hard items such as hard seeds creates larger relief.  相似文献
