The egg nest of male three‐spined sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus is constructed with a glue‐like secretion that this study demonstrates has antimicrobial properties. Glue collected from reproductively active males decreased the growth rate of bacteria and opportunistic fungi, and eggs were more likely to mature and hatch after exposure to their father’s glue. This phenomenon may represent a direct physiological contribution from a male towards protecting his offspring from pathogens, and if so is a novel form of parental protection.  相似文献

The influence of relatedness on male–male aggression was tested in three‐spined sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus. The intensity of aggression against brothers and non‐kin males did not differ significantly, indicating that kin recognition plays at most a minor role in aggressive interactions between male G. aculeatus.  相似文献

Experiments done in aquaria under control and either turbid or densely vegetated conditions indicated that three‐spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus sneaking behaviour is affected by decreased underwater visibility. Success of sneaking behaviour decreased significantly under increased turbidity but not increased vegetation density. The total number of sneaking attempts, including unsuccessful ones, was not affected by either form of decreasing visibility.  相似文献

Several factors related to buoyancy were compared between one marine and two freshwater populations of three‐spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus. Fish from all three populations had buoyancy near to neutral to the ambient water. This showed that neither marine nor freshwater G. aculeatus used swimming and hydrodynamic lift to prevent sinking. Comparing the swimbladder volumes showed that freshwater completely plated G. aculeatus had a significantly larger swimbladder volume than both completely plated marine and low‐plated freshwater G. aculeatus. Furthermore, body tissue density was lower in low‐plated G. aculeatus than in the completely plated marine and freshwater fish. The results show that G. aculeatus either reduce tissue density or increase swimbladder volume to adapt to lower water density. Mass measurements of lateral plates and pelvis showed that loss of body armour in low‐plated G. aculeatus could explain the tissue density difference between low‐plated and completely plated G. aculeatus. This suggests that the common occurrence of plate and armour reduction in freshwater G. aculeatus populations can be an adaptation to a lower water density.  相似文献

Morphometric differentiation among freshwater fish populations is a commonplace occurrence, although the underlying causes for this divergence often remain elusive. We analysed the degree and patterns of morphological differentiation among nine freshwater three‐spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) populations inhabiting isolated karst rivers of the Adriatic Sea basin, to characterise the phenotypic diversity and differentiation in these populations. The analyses revealed marked and significant morphometric differentiation – especially in traits related to predator defence amongst most populations – even among those located within close geographic proximity in the same catchment system. Accordingly, the degree of morphometric and neutral genetic differentiation, as assessed from variability in 15 microsatellite loci from a parallel study, were uncorrelated across the populations. However, PST/FST comparisons revealed that the degree of phenotypic differentiation (PST) among populations exceeded that to be expected from genetic drift alone, suggesting a possible adaptive basis for the observed differentiation. In fact, avian predation pressure and several physiochemical environmental variables were identified as the main putative drivers of the observed differentiation, particularly in the dorsal spines, ascending process and lateral plates. Hence, the high degree of morphometric differentiation among Adriatic three‐spined stickleback populations appears to reflect adaptation to local ecological conditions. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2015, 115 , 219–240.  相似文献

Different lines of evidence suggest that the occurrence and extent of local adaptation in high gene flow marine environments – even in mobile and long‐lived vertebrates with complex life cycles – may be more widespread than earlier thought. We conducted a common garden experiment to test for local adaptation to salinity in Baltic Sea sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus). Fish from three different native salinity regimes (high, mid and low) were subjected to three salinity treatments (high, mid and low) in a full‐factorial experimental design. Irrespective of their origin, fish subjected to low (and mid) salinity treatments exhibited higher juvenile survival, grew to largest sizes and were in better condition than fish subjected to the high salinity treatment. However, a significant interaction between native and treatment salinities – resulting mainly from the poor performance of fish native to low salinity in the high salinity treatment – provided clear cut evidence for adaptation to local variation in salinity. Additional support for this inference was provided by the fact that the results concur with an earlier demonstration of significant differentiation in a number of genes with osmoregulatory functions across the same populations and that the population‐specific responses to salinity treatments exceeded that to be expected by random genetic drift.  相似文献

We investigated the trade‐off between conflict and cooperation, using predator inspection behaviour in sticklebacks as a model system. Male three‐spined sticklebacks ( Gasterosteus aculeatus ) compete for territories during the breeding season and it has been demonstrated that the level of aggression between territorial neighbours declines with time, a phenomenon known as the dear enemy effect. In this experiment we examine whether this increase in familiarity between territorial neighbours can facilitate an increase in cooperation during predator inspection events. This was analyzed using male sticklebacks from four pond populations, two with and two without predatory rainbow trout ( Oncorhyncus mykiss ). Males were each exposed to five different treatments: (1) the presentation of a live rainbow trout when alone; (2) with a newly revealed territorial neighbour; (3) with this neighbour after two days of familiarization; (4) with another unfamiliar neighbour (termed a 'floater'); and (5) a second solitary trial (to provide controls at the start and end of the experiment). As predicted, fish from predator‐sympatric populations showed higher levels of predator inspection and lower rates of misdirected territorial aggression towards the predator throughout. However, familiarity between neighbouring males did not facilitate an increase in predator inspection behaviour. Instead, predator inspection behaviour decreased throughout treatments involving the presence of any sort of neighbouring male. Familiarity between neighbours did not influence their ability to cooperatively inspect, but only the nature of any aggressive territorial behaviours, all of which detracted equally from individual inspection effort.  相似文献

Three-spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus L.) were collected during different sampling trails from three locations in Northern Germany, which differ in the amount of sewage-treatment effluent that they receive. Due to natural population developments, the size of the specimens caught decreased significantly from April to August. The fish were examined for DNA damage in their blood cells by means of the comet (single-cell gel electrophoresis, SCGE) assay and the micronucleus test (MT). The suitability of stickleback erythrocytes as indicators for genotoxic substances in water was assessed. The median level of strand breakage ranged from 5.23 to 9.67%, and decreased significantly from April to August. The difference between the locations was marginally significant. The amount of micronuclei was more variable (ranging from 0.40 to 4.35%), but appears to better reflect the pollution state of the sampling location. Significant differences between the locations were found. The relatively strong micronucleus induction found in this study may be related to the fish species selected. Contrary to the SCGE results, a significant increase in the number of micronuclei from April to August was observed. A significant negative correlation between strand breakage and micronuclei was found for the sticklebacks from the most polluted location and for the pooled data of all locations. The length of the fish was positively correlated with results of the SCGE and negatively with those of the MT, whereby males show a clearer relation between size and the amount of genotoxic damage. The test results are predominantly affected by seasonal impacts. This study indicates that the outcome of the SCGE and MT applied to sticklebacks is determined by multiple factors, which need to be identified first before these tests can be applied routinely. Because of the profound negative correlation between SCGE and MT results, we recommend to apply both tests for the evaluation of the genotoxic potential of surface waters.  相似文献

Hypotheses and models to explain female ornaments often assume that the elaborated traits are condition dependent; nevertheless, few empirical studies have addressed this topic. We studied a population of three-spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) in which the females have conspicuous, carotenoid-based red coloration to their pelvic spines. The red coloration seems not to be condition dependent, as coloration is negatively associated with age and body length and not associated with condition. Furthermore, redder females did not have a lower density of leucocytes. We found a negative association between the females' red carotenoid-based coloration in the spines and the amount of carotenoids in the female's gonads. Males choosing red-coloured females will fertilize eggs with small amounts of carotenoids and appear not to gain any benefit from their mates' phenotypic quality that could result in offspring of improved quality. These results do not support the 'direct selection hypothesis' to explain the existence of the female ornaments.  相似文献

Conspicuous ornaments are often considered a result of evolution by sexual selection. According to the social selection hypothesis, such conspicuous traits may also evolve as badges of status associated with increased boldness or aggression toward conspecifics in conflicts about ecological resources. This study tested predictions from the social selection hypothesis to explain evolution of conspicuous red color of the pelvic spines of the three‐spine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus). Wild nonreproducing sticklebacks were presented to pairs of dummies which differed at their pelvic spines, having either (i) normal‐sized gray or red pelvic spines or (ii) normal‐sized gray or large red pelvic spines. The experimental tank was illuminated by white or green light, since green light impedes the sticklebacks’ ability to detect red color. The dummies moved slowly around in circles at each end of the experimental tank. We quantified the parameters (i) which of the two dummies was visited first, (ii) time taken before the first visit to a dummy, (iii) distribution of the focal sticklebacks in the two zones close to each of the two dummies and in the neutral zone of the tank, (iv) close to which of the two dummies did the focal fish eat its first food‐piece, and (v) time spent until the first piece of food was eaten. This was carried out for 22 females and 29 males sticklebacks. The results suggested no effect of the color or size of the dummies’ pelvic spines, on none of the five behavioral parameters. Moreover, neither the color of the pelvic spines of the focal sticklebacks themselves (as opposed to redness of the dummies’ spines) nor their body length was associated with behavior toward the dummies. Thus, this study did not support predictions from the social selection hypothesis to explain evolution of red pelvic spines in sticklebacks.  相似文献

Most studies seeking to provide evolutionary explanations for brain size variability have relied on interspecific comparisons, while intraspecific studies utilizing ecologically divergent populations to this effect are rare. We investigated the brain size and structure of first‐generation laboratory‐bred nine‐spined sticklebacks (Pungitius pungitius) from four geographically and genetically isolated populations originating from markedly different habitats. We found that the relative size of bulbus olfactorius and telencephalon was significantly larger in marine than in pond populations. Significant, but habitat‐independent population differences were also found in relative brain and cerebellum sizes. The consistent, habitat‐specific differences in the relative size of bulbus olfactorius and telencephalon suggest their adaptive reduction in response to reduced (biotic and abiotic) habitat complexity in pond environments. In general, the results suggest that genetically based brain size and structure differences can evolve relatively rapidly and in repeatable fashion with respect to habitat structure.  相似文献

Exposure to enhanced levels of ambient ultraviolet (UV) radiation (UVR) can have adverse effects on aquatic organisms including damage at the cellular and molecular level and impairment of development, fecundity and survival. Much research has been conducted on the role of the harmful UVB radiation. However, due to its greater penetration in water the more abundant UVA radiation can also act as an environmental stressor. Little is known about UVR effects on sperm characteristics although sperm cells should be especially prone to UV-induced oxidative stress. Moreover, UV-related changes in oxidative status may affect the phenotypic expression of energetically costly sexual ornaments. We investigated the effects of long-term exposure to ecologically relevant levels of simulated UVA radiation on sperm quality and sexual ornamentation in three-spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus). Males were assigned to three spectral exposure treatments differing in the UV spectral part so that they received either enhanced, moderate or no UVA radiation. The results reveal that exposure to enhanced ambient UVA levels had detrimental effects on both male breeding coloration and sperm velocity providing evidence that UVR affects traits targeted by pre- and post-copulatory sexual selection. By highlighting the role of UVA as a factor influencing fitness-relevant traits, our findings may contribute to a better understanding of the consequences of current and future levels of solar UVR for mating systems and life history.  相似文献

The suprachiasmatic nucleus of the hypothalamus (SCN) plays an essential role in the generation and maintenance of circadian rhythms in mammals. The SCN activity is also dependent upon the photoperiod. The duration of the SCN sensitive phase to light, in term of Fos induction, is variable and tied to the length of the night. The question is how and by which pathways can photoperiod influence SCN? It is possible following the theoretical model of evening and morning component of the clock that the SCN build itself the photoperiodic signal. That the SCN integrate the photoperiodic information through indirect neural or neuroendocrine pathways is also to consider. Data in favor of these different interpretations are presented.  相似文献

Several biologically active compounds structurally include the enantiopure 2‐substituted‐1,4‐benzodioxane scaffold. The straightforward racemization that affects reactions involving most of the common chemical reactives is thus a crucial issue. The developing of a completely stereo‐controlled synthetic route that does not affect the enantiomeric excess is consequently mandatory. It is also important to set up a reliable chiral HPLC method, able to follow the reaction, and to improve the synthetic performances. Here, we report the chiral investigation of two different synthons, we specifically evaluated the synthetic pathways that could be run in order to afford them, avoiding the racemization processes, which could normally occur in basic conditions. In addition, we developed peculiar chiral HPLC methods in order to resolve the enantiomers, define the enantiomeric excess, and fully characterize these compounds.  相似文献

Are three‐dimensional spider webs defensive adaptations?   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Spider webs result from complex behaviours that have evolved under many selective pressures. Webs have been primarily considered to be foraging adaptations, neglecting the potential role of predation risk in the evolution of web architecture. The ecological success of spiders has been attributed to key innovations in how spiders use silk to capture prey, especially the invention of chemically adhesive aerial two‐dimensional orb webs. However, araneoid sheet web weavers transformed the orb architecture into three‐dimensional webs and are the dominant group of aerial web‐building spiders world‐wide, both in numbers and described species diversity. We argue that mud‐dauber wasps are major predators of orbicularian spiders, and exert a directional selective pressure to construct three‐dimensional webs such that three‐dimensional webs are partly defensive innovations. Furthermore, patterns of diversification suggest that escape from wasp predators may have facilitated diversification of three‐dimensional web‐building spiders.  相似文献

Preferences for rejoining shoals composed of familiar individuals have recently been documented in a variety of small, shallow-water fish species. Such preferences are assumed to be adaptive, since familiar groups have improved anti-predator defences and more stable dominance hierarchies. However, the design of these studies may have created conditions that elevate preferences for familiar individuals. Furthermore, in natural habitats, where significant opportunities for inter-shoal transfer may exist, it is unclear whether shoals stay together long enough for such preferences to develop. Here we present the results of a laboratory study examining whether prior familiarity influences the subsequent shoal composition of sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) allowed to re-assort freely in a large arena tank. We show that fish from different familiarity groups associate with familiar conspecifics significantly more than predicted by a model of random assortment, suggesting that even when there is ample opportunity for inter-group transfer, shoal composition can remain stable. We discuss the phenomena that may lead to the formation of familiar groups in natural habitats. In addition, we suggest that familiarity benefits may reduce the relative value of transferring to otherwise more attractive (e.g. larger or more phenotypically matched) groups, and thereby stabilize shoal structure.  相似文献

Individuals of most bat species hang head‐down by their toenails from rough surfaces, but Madagascar's endemic sucker‐footed bat (Myzopoda aurita) clings head‐up to smooth leaves using specialized pads on its wrists and ankles. We investigated the adhesive performance of 28 individuals and found that attachment performance on brass was not affected by the presence or absence of a seal around the pad–surface interface. Furthermore, on smooth acrylic, the wrist pads were more than nine‐fold weaker when lifted perpendicular to the surface than when pulled parallel to it. The unimportance of a seal and the difference in strength in those directions on a smooth surface are characteristic of wet adhesion, but not of suction. Thus, despite its name, the sucker‐footed bat appears to adhere using wet adhesion. We observed that when wrist pads were pushed anteriorly, they unpeeled easily from the surface because of deformation of the pads. This most likely permits rapid detachment during crawling, but would also cause passive detachment if bats roosted head‐down. This provides an ecomorphological explanation to the head‐up roosting behaviour of these unique bats. The results obtained in the present study thus link morphology, behaviour, and roosting ecology for an enigmatic Malagasy endemic. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 99 , 233–240.  相似文献

To understand and forecast biological responses to climate change, scientists frequently use field experiments that alter temperature and precipitation. Climate manipulations can manifest in complex ways, however, challenging interpretations of biological responses. We reviewed publications to compile a database of daily plot‐scale climate data from 15 active‐warming experiments. We find that the common practices of analysing treatments as mean or categorical changes (e.g. warmed vs. unwarmed) masks important variation in treatment effects over space and time. Our synthesis showed that measured mean warming, in plots with the same target warming within a study, differed by up to 1.6 C (63% of target), on average, across six studies with blocked designs. Variation was high across sites and designs: for example, plots differed by 1.1 C (47% of target) on average, for infrared studies with feedback control (n = 3) vs. by 2.2 C (80% of target) on average for infrared with constant wattage designs (n = 2). Warming treatments produce non‐temperature effects as well, such as soil drying. The combination of these direct and indirect effects is complex and can have important biological consequences. With a case study of plant phenology across five experiments in our database, we show how accounting for drier soils with warming tripled the estimated sensitivity of budburst to temperature. We provide recommendations for future analyses, experimental design, and data sharing to improve our mechanistic understanding from climate change experiments, and thus their utility to accurately forecast species’ responses.  相似文献

It is increasingly recognized that evolution may occur in ecological time. It is not clear, however, how fast evolution – or phenotypic change more generally – may be in comparison with the associated ecology, or whether systems with fast ecological dynamics generally have relatively fast rates of phenotypic change. We developed a new dataset on standardized rates of change in population size and phenotypic traits for a wide range of species and taxonomic groups. We show that rates of change in phenotypes are generally no more than 2/3, and on average about 1/4, the concurrent rates of change in population size. There was no relationship between rates of population change and rates of phenotypic change across systems. We also found that the variance of both phenotypic and ecological rates increased with the mean across studies following a power law with an exponent of two, while temporal variation in phenotypic rates was lower than in ecological rates. Our results are consistent with the view that ecology and evolution may occur at similar time scales, but clarify that only rarely do populations change as fast in traits as they do in abundance.  相似文献
