Bioerosion experiments at Lizard Island,Great Barrier Reef   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
The rates at which dead coral substrates are modified by bioerosional processes were determined by exposing recently killed corals for up to four years in a variety of reef environments at Lizard Island (northern Great Barrier Reef). Grazers were the major croding agents of these coral substrates and exhibited differences between sites that varied between sampling periods. Subtidal reef slopes and lagoon environments of water depths < 20 m were subjected to higher average rates of grazing erosion (0.30–1.96 kg/m2/y) than shallow depths less than 1 m (0.07–0.26 kg/m2/y). A deep site at 20 m experienced low average rates of grazing (0.08–0.29 kg/m2/y). Boring rates by worms (polychaetes and sipunculans), sponges and molluscs were relatively low and varied between sites, but increased with length of sampling period as larger borers succeeded the initial colonizing small polychaete worms. We hypothesize from these experiments that the extent of boring in reef substrates will be influenced by the interaction between the succession of the boring community and the rate at which the substrate is destroyed by grazing. We suggest that the level of grazing modifies the successional pattern of borers by removing the surface substrate and continually exposing bare substrate that can be colonized by early boring colonists. Thus, constant high levels of grazing may maintain the boring community at an early successional stage and prevent the development of a mature boring community. In order to establish large borer populations, reef substrates must be protected from extensive grazing bioerosion. This interaction of grazing and boring has important implications for the way dead coral is preserved in different reef environments.  相似文献

Grazing by large herbivores, in interplay with environmental productivity, is a key driver of the composition of the vegetation with important consequences on the ecosystem and, consequently, for land management. We tested the predictions of the resource availability – resource–acquisition theory by assessing the extent to which community averages of plant traits, known to be related to plant growth, competitive ability and response to grazing were correlated with resource gradients within local (200 km2) geographical ranges. Second, we assessed the applicability of the same set of plant traits to make inferences on ecological effects of grazing by sheep in alpine ecosystems in Norway, using a data set consisting of 16 sites in central Norway. We estimated grazing intensity by free-ranging sheep based on GPS telemetry, soil properties, plant species composition and species traits i.e. specific leaf area (SLA), leaf dry matter content (LDMC), leaf size and plant height. Soil fertility and the interaction between soil fertility and grazing, but not grazing intensity alone, were significantly related to plant species and traits composition. Generally, average SLA showed lower correspondence with soil fertility and grazing than the other traits. Leaf size and plant height were lowest at sites with high grazing intensity and in sites with low fertility, and increased with soil fertility in little and moderately grazed sites, but declined at high fertility sites when grazing was intense. LDMC showed the opposite trend. Grazing intensity was more related to the variability in plant composition and average plant traits when environmental productivity was high. Our results therefore are indicative of a convergence of responses to grazing and nutrient limitation.  相似文献

Calcium binding to spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) stromal proteins was examined by dual-wavelength spectrophotometry using the metallochromic indicator tetramethylmurexide. The data are consistent with the existence of at least two, probably independent, classes of binding sites. The total number of binding sites varied between 90–155 nmol·mg–1 protein with average binding constants of 1.1–2.7·mM–1. Both Mg2+ and La3+ inhibited calcium binding competitively, with average inhibitor constants of 0.26·mM–1 and 39.4·mM–1, respectively; an increase in the potassium concentration up to 50 mM had no effect. In a typical experiment a decrease in pH (7.8 to 7.1) resulted in a decrease in the total number of calcium binding sites from 90 to 59 nmol·mg–1 protein, but in an increase of the average affinity from 2.7 to 4.5·mM–1. Calculations, using these data and those of Gross and Hess (1974, Biochim. Biophys. Acta 339, 334–346) for binding site I of washed thylakoid membranes, showed that the free-Ca2+ concentration in the stroma under dark conditions, pH 7.1, is higher than under light conditions, pH 7.8. This study provides a comparison between vegetation of relatively recent and long-unburnt shrubland in terms of structural and functional groups, annual net primary productivity and water relations. Adjacent areas of vegetation long-unburnt or burnt 5 years previously were compared within a remnant block of AcaciaAllocasuarinaMelaleuca arid shrubland at Kalannie, south west Western Australia. Species were classified according to growth and life form, fire response, phenology and rooting morphology and densities, mean plant above-ground dry weights and shoot:root dry mass ratios of each assessed. Species compositions, seedling densities and absence of recruitment in the long-unburnt area suggested marked dependence on fire in maintenance of biodiversity. Comparisons of above-ground standing dry biomass and annual net primary productivity of total (above-ground plus below-ground) dry matter showed the 4.09 kg m–2 biomass of long-unburnt vegetation to be increasing at 0.52 kg m–2 year–1 versus 0.45 and 0.18 kg m–2 year–1 for vegetation of the burnt area. Water relations of soils indicated consistently wetter profiles in burnt than long-unburnt areas and no deep drainage during the year of study. Lower water stress of key species in burnt than long-unburnt areas were indicated by less negative pre-dawn water potentials and higher stomatal conductance during the year of study and more negative carbon-isotope composition (13C) in wood laid down over the past 5 years. Budgets for water use were estimated for both sites and compared with annual net primary productivities. Data suggested much greater transpiration loss per unit dry matter gain by the rapidly growing plants at the burnt site (437 ml H2O g–1 DM) than by the plants of the long-unburnt community (92 ml H2O g–1 DM). Results are discussed in relation to composition and functioning of other Western Australian ecosystems. It is clear that time since fire affects productivity and water-use of vegetation of semi-arid shrublands and is therefore an important consideration for management and protection of remnant vegetation.  相似文献

Results of an extensive vegetation survey of 214 miombo woodland sitesare reported, encompassing the full spectrum of site types in the northernregion of Zimbabwe. At each sample site the vascular species (altogether640) were recorded, as well as 38 environmental variables (climatic,topographic, edaphic factors; geology, vegetation features, exploitation andland tenure). The sampling design was orientated along the environmentalgradients: altitude, slope, precipitation and geology. A reduced species set(286 species; frequency > 3%)was analysed by Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA), complementedby the Monte Carlo Permutation Test. The first axis represents acombination of the major environmental variables, altitude, precipitation andsoil texture, and the second – being of marginal importance – thePiriwiri and Lomagundi sediments. The matrix–consisting of the species and sites arranged according to the firstordination-axis – shows a diagonal feature embodying the moistureavailability gradient of the study area, subsequently divided into sevenordinalmoisture classes. The weighted averages of the species scores of therelevés – the scores being fixed by the membership of the singlespecies to one of the respective moisture classes – permits ranking thesites due to moisture availability, thereby assessing their land use capacity.  相似文献

Summary The present paper deals with the distribution of nitrogen in the different plant compartments and in the top 30 cm soil among the protected, semi-protected and open-grazed grasslands at Kanpur (26° 26 N latitude and 80° 22 E longitude).The protected site indicated greater nitrogen content (g N m–2) in the aboveground and belowground plant parts as compared to those of semi-protected and open-grazed sites. Nitrogen content in the combined live and dead herbage varied from 2.6 to 53.5 g m–2 in protected community, 1.6 to 27.6 g m–2 in semi-protected and 0.9 to 17.4 g m–2 in open-grazed community. The content ranged between 1.0 to 17.7, 0.5 to 9.7 and 0.4 to 6.6 g m–2 for belowground and from 0.1 to 1.1, 0.1 to 0.5 and 0.1 to 0.3 g m–2 for litter compartments in protected, semi-protected and open-grazed community respectively.A significant positive relationship was found with the nitrogen per gram dry weight in combined live and dead herbage of the study sites and the average monthly relative humidity.The distribution pattern of nitrogen in plant/soil system indicated that the major portion of nitrogen (91 per cent in the protected, 95 per cent in the semi-protected and 96 per cent in the opengrazed stands) in the system was retained in the soil while a small fraction of it (9 per cent, 5 per cent and 4 per cent on protected, semi-protected and open-grazed area respectively) resided in plant compartments. Partitioning, uptake, transfer and release of nitrogen have been discussed in detail for all three sites.  相似文献

End-plate potentials (EPP) and miniature EPP (MEPP) were recorded in a single neuromuscular synapse of the frog sartorius muscle by means of two microelectrodes with a resistance of 0.5–2.0 M. Groups of signals (fields), reflecting transmitter secretion in spatially distinct release sites were identified by extracellular recording on MEPP amplitude scatter diagrams. Release sites in the nerve ending were found to be unevenly distributed, to be grouped in certain areas, and to differ in their probability of secretion of a quantum of transmitter. Comparison of fields on MEPP and uniquantal EPP amplitude scatter diagrams in solution with low Ca++ concentration (0.2–0.4 mM) showed that ability to induce evoked and spontaneous transmitter release at the release site differs, and that sometimes a release site does not participate in evoked secretion. The results of simultaneous recording of synaptic potentials using extra- and intracellular electrodes indicate that transmitter secretion in spatially distinct groups of release sites leads to the appearance of polymodality in the distribution of amplitudes of intracellularly recorded MEPP and uniquantal EPP.S. Many species-rich Themeda triandra grasslands in south-eastern Australia have been burnt annually in summer as a land management practice for decades. The characteristics of annual fires (maximum surface temperatures, maximum soil temperature changes at 10 mm depth, Byram fire intensity and duration of surface heating) were compared to fires that occur less frequently (2, 4 or 7-year inter-fire interval). The impacts of annual summer fires on seed survival, perennial plant dynamics and flowering were also documented at two sites over two years.Annual grassland fires differ principally from other grassland fire types in their duration of surface temperatures above 100°C (i.e., <1 min versus >2–3 min in grasslands burnt at 4–7-year intervals). This was correlated to fuel load, but not rate of spread or Byram fire intensity. Maximum surface temperatures were variable within annual fire events (98–458°C ) and did not differ significantly from those observed in other grassland fires. All sites experienced temperatures above 350°C but no site had its soil temperature increase at 10 mm depth by >10°C during fire. Byram fire intensity was lower in annually burnt sites, but positively correlated with rate of spread moreso than fuel load.Many perennial species (34–55%) and most perennial individuals (70–83%) avoid the annual summer fire event by being dormant at the time of burning. All perennial species regenerated rapidly by vegetative means after fire and seedlings were absent or rare for most species. As a result, turnover of species at the small-scale was low.Annual burning permits high perennial species richness (mean 18 species/0.25 m2) and high numbers of individual perennial plants (range 189–1036 plants/0.25 m2) to co-exist at the small-scale. Seasonal plant density maxima peaked in spring, 6–8 months after fire, and the number of plants in a species' population each year following fire depended on their seasonal response more than their direct fire response. The direction and magnitude of population change from one year to the next was species and site specific and did not correlate with life form or a plant's ability for vegetative spread. All perennial species have a short secondary juvenile period (i.e., 6–11 months) but relatively few individual plants flower in any one year. Seed that has made its way into the soil is completely protected from the direct effects of fire and hence, occasional post-fire seedling recruitment may be possible for all species.Maintaining annual burning in grasslands as a management regime is unlikely to lead to a decline in richness and plant density in the short-term. Rather, delayed burning (i.e., >3 year intervals), and the impact that this may have on interval dependent processes such as above-ground competition, are predicted to have more substantial long-term effects on the small-scale dynamic of this community.  相似文献

Estuarine Microbial Food Web Patterns in a Lake Erie Coastal Wetland   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Composition and distribution of planktonic protists were examined relative to microbial food web dynamics (growth, grazing, and nitrogen cycling rates) at the Old Woman Creek (OWC) National Estuarine Research Reserve during an episodic storm event in July 2003. More than 150 protistan taxa were identified based on morphology. Species richness and microbial biomass measured via microscopy and flow cytometry increased along a stream–lake (Lake Erie) transect and peaked at the confluence. Water column ammonium (NH4+) uptake (0.06 to 1.82 M N h–1) and regeneration (0.04 to 0.55 M N h–1) rates, measured using 15NH4+ isotope dilution, followed the same pattern. Large light/dark NH4+ uptake differences were observed in the hypereutrophic OWC interior, but not at the phosphorus-limited Lake Erie site, reflecting the microbial community structural shift from net autotrophic to net heterotrophic. Despite this shift, microbial grazers (mostly choreotrich ciliates, taxon-specific growth rates up to 2.9 d–1) controlled nanophytoplankton and bacteria at all sites by consuming 76 to 110% and 56 to 97% of their daily production, respectively, in dilution experiments. Overall, distribution patterns and dynamics of microbial communities in OWC resemble those in marine estuaries, where plankton productivity increases along the river–sea gradient and reaches its maximum at the confluence.  相似文献

Biomass, production, and nutrient distribution of a pure Quercus variabilis Bl. stand (stand 1) and two mixed Q. variabilisQ. mongolica Fisch. stands (stand 2 and 3) were investigated in central Korea. Stand 1 naturally occurred on a site with a southern aspect while stand 2 and stand 3 occurred on sites with a northern aspect. Total (overstory+understory vegetation) biomass (tha-1) and annual production (tha–1year–1) were 137.8 and 11.1 for stand 1, 216.2 and 16.6 for stand 2, and 253.3 and 19.7 for stand 3. Nutrient contents (kgha–1) in the vegetation were distributed as follows: K, 478–860; N, 471–839; Ca, 428–791; Mg, 72–125; Na, 77–141; and P, 37–71, and were greatest in stand 3 followed by stand 2, and stand 1. Stand density influenced the differences in biomass, annual production and nutrient contents in the vegetation. Forest floor dry mass and N content (kgha–1) were 13400 and 169 for stand 1, 10400 and 133 for stand 2, and 11200 and 127 for stand 3. Total amounts of N, P and Na in the ecosystem were greatest in the upper 40cm of mineral soil followed by the vegetation and forest floor. However, the vegetation contained a greater amount of K than the mineral soil. It appeared that microenvironments, such as, aspect influenced the distribution of natural oak species within a relatively small area and resulted in differences in biomass, production and nutrient distribution among the stands.  相似文献

In order to gain information about seasonal and interannual variations of CH4-fluxes at a spruce control site, a limed spruce site and a beech site of the Höglwald Forest, Bavaria, Germany, complete annual cycles of CH4-exchange between the soil and the atmosphere with 2-hourly resolution were followed for 4 consecutive years. The ranges of CH4 fluxes observed for the different sites were: +12.4 to –69.4 g CH4 m–2 h–1 (spruce control site), +11.7 to –51.4 g CH4 m–2 h–1 (limed spruce site), and –4.4 to –167.3 g CH4 m–2 h–1 (beech site). Lowest rates of atmospheric CH4-uptake or even a weak net-emission of CH4 by the soils were observed during winter/spring times, whereas highest rates of CH4-uptake were always found in summer/spring. Over the entire observation period of 4 years, mean CH4-uptake rates were –1.82 kg CH4-C ha–1 yr–1 at the spruce control site, –1.31 kg CH4-C ha–1 yr–1 at the limed spruce site, and –4.84 kg CH4-C ha–1 yr–1 at the beech site. The results obtained in this study demonstrate that in view of the huge interannual variations in CH4-fluxes of approx. 1 kg CH4-C ha–1 yr–1, multiple year measurements of CH4-fluxes are necessary to accurately characterize the sink strength of temperate forest for atmospheric CH4. By comparison of CH4-fluxes measured at the spruce control site and the limed spruce site, a significant negative effect of forest floor liming on CH4-uptake could be demonstrated. Compared to the spruce stand, the beech stand showed on average approx. 3 times higher rates of atmospheric CH4-uptake, most likely due to pronounced differences between both sites with regard to the organic layer structure and bulk density of the mineral soil. Regression analysis between CH4-fluxes and environmental parameters revealed that at all sites the dominating factors regulating temporal variations of CH4 fluxes were soil moisture and soil temperature. Field measurements of CH4 concentrations in the soil profile and laboratory measurements of CH4-oxidation and CH4-production activity on soil samples taken from different soil depths showed that the CH4-flux at the Höglwald Forest sites is the net-result of simultaneous occurring production and consumption of CH4 within the soil. Highest CH4-oxidation activity was found in the uppermost centimeters of the mineral soil, whereas highest potential CH4-production activity was found in the organic layer.  相似文献

Three bacterial strains, two identified as Pseudomonas stutzeri and one as a strain of cucurbit yellow vine disease bacterium, isolated from a foundry soil and a tannery, respectively, in Pakistan, were resistant to up to 1 mM chromate and anaerobically reduced Cr(VI) up to 100 M. The highest removal was by P. stutzeri CMG463: 88 mol l–1 (88% of that supplied; specific rate was 3.0 nmol mg–1 protein h–1), while 58 and 76 mol l–1 (58% and 76%) were removed by P. stutzeri CMG462 and cucurbit yellow vine disease bacterium CMG480, respectively. These isolates were compared to strains isolated from an uncontaminated coastal site in the UK and designated as K2 (Pseudomonas synxantha) K3 (Bacillus sp.), and J3 (unidentified Gram-positive strain). Strain K3 was Cr-sensitive, partially lysed by Cr(VI), but had the highest removal of chromate anaerobically: 92 mol l–1 (92% of that supplied) at a specific rate of 71 nmol mg–1 protein h–1. Analysis of cell sections using transmission electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis showed intracellular chromium in P. stutzeri but the cucurbit yellow vine disease bacterium and the Bacillus sp. precipitated chromium extracellularly. The isolates from the Cr-contaminated sites did not remove more Cr(VI), overall, than Cr-unstressed bacteria, but their tolerance to Cr(VI) is potentially useful for bioremediation, particularly since other studies have shown that the two P. stutzeri strains can bioaccumulate Cu2+.  相似文献

Complete annual cycles of N2O and CH4 flux in forest soils at a beech and at a spruce site at the Höglwald Forest were followed in 1997 by use of fully automatic measuring systems. In order to test if on a microsite scale differences in the magnitude of trace gas exchange between e.g. areas in direct vicinity of stems and areas in the interstem region at both sites exist, tree chambers and gradient chambers were installed in addition to the already existing interstem chambers at our sites. N2O fluxes were in a range of –4.6–473.3 g N2O-N m–2 h–1 at the beech site and in a range of –3.7–167.2 g N2O-N m–2 h–1 at the spruce site, respectively. Highest N2O emissions were observed during and at the end of a prolonged frost period, thereby further supporting previous findings that frost periods are of crucial importance for controlling annual N2O losses from temperate forests. Fluxes of CH4 were in a range of +10.4––194.0 g CH4 m–2 h–1 at the beech site and in a range of –4.4––83.5 g CH4 m–2 h–1 at the spruce site. In general, both N2O-fluxes as well as CH4-fluxes were higher at the beech site. On a microsite scale, N2O and CH4 fluxes at the beech site were highest within the stem area (annual mean: 49.6±3.3 g N2O-N m–2 h–1; –77.2±3.1 g CH4 m–2 h–1), and significantly lower within interstem areas (18.5±1.4 g N2O-N m–2 h–1; –60.2±1.8 g CH4 m–2 h–1). Significantly higher values of total N, C and pH in the organic layer, as well as increased soil moisture, especially in spring, in the stem areas, are likely to contribute to the higher N2O fluxes within the stem area of the beech. Also for the spruce site, such differences in trace gas fluxes could be demonstrated to exist (mean annual N2O emission within (a) stem areas: 9.7±0.9 g N2O-N m–2 h–1 and (b) interstem areas: 6.2±0.6 g N2O-N m–2 h–1; mean annual CH4 uptake within (a) stem areas: –26.1±0.6 g CH4 m–2 h–1 and (b) interstem areas: –38.4±0.8 g CH4 m–2 h–1), though they were not as pronounced as at the beech site.  相似文献

The chemical and biological conditions, and the bacteria-heterotrophic nanoflagellate (HNF) relationship were investigated in the vicinity of Funka Bay, southwest of Hokkaido, Japan during early spring 1999. At the time of sampling, chlorophyll a concentration, bacteria, phycoerythrin rich-cyanobacteria, and HNF abundance were in the following ranges: 0.3–3.6 g l–1, 2.5–5.6 × 105 cells ml–1, 0.6–1.2 × 103 cells ml–1, and 2.2–4.2 × 103 cells ml–1, respectively. Dissolved inorganic nitrogen, phosphate and silicate concentrations were in the ranges: 8.7–12.2 M, 0.9–2.0 M, and 21.6–25.5 M, respectively. Primary production ranged from 6.4 to 76.3 mg C m–3 d–1. Using water samples from regions of different productivity levels (in and outside bay), the bacteria - HNF relationship was uncoupled experimentally by the size-fractionation technique. Higher primary production (19.9 mg C m–3 d–1) in the bay supported higher bacterial growth rate (0.029 h–1). However, outside the bay both primary production (6.4 mg C m–3 d–1) and bacterial growth rate (0.007 h–1) were lower. The HNF growth rates and grazing rates were similar for both but by comparing both HNF grazing capacity and bacterial production, there was net decrease in bacterial abundance outside the bay and net increase inside the bay. The microbial parameters (rates and abundance) and the amount of carbon flow estimated through the phytoplankton – dissolved organic matter (DOM) – bacteria loop were different between the coastal station and the open ocean station. However HNF grazing and growth rates was similar for both stations.  相似文献

IntensiveStrongylocentrotus droebachiensis grazing of a previously sampled one-hectare plot provided an opportunity for quantitatively investigating grazing impact on the benthic macrophyte community and community recovery. The changes induced by grazing are compared with changes in a similar plot located nearby which was not grazed. A total of 154 quantitative 0.25 m2 quadrats were collected in mid-summer, from the two sites, over a 4-year period. The results presented indicate thatS. droebachiensis populations in the Strait of Georgia undergo periodic, environmentally controlled, outbreaks and that these outbreaks are responsible for localized perturbation of the benthic macrophyte community. Short-term grazing, where the urchins do not remain in the area, result in a 60 percent reduction in most community parameters measured. The community requires 2 or 3 years to regain or exceed pre-grazing biomass levels while other parameters had not recovered after 3 years. An estimated 4–6 year period is required to achieve ecological climax (Fishelson, 1977) and species enrichment follows. The largest macrophyte in the Strait of Georgia, the kelpNereocystis luetkeana, is a successional species whose abundance is controlled, in part, by the successional status of the community.  相似文献

The composition, abundance, population structure and distribution patterns of all woody species ( 30 cm gbh) were investigated in an undisturbed and two adjacent human-impacted sites of a tropical wet evergreen forest in Kalakad National Park, Western Ghats, south India. Three 1-ha plots were established, one each in (i) an undisturbed site (named site UD), (ii) in a site selectively felled 35 years ago (site SF – small stems felled leaving the large trees (as shade) for developing it into a cardamom estate, on the failure of which the site was abandoned) and (iii) a frequently disturbed site (site FD – round woods logged for use in ovens for curing cardamom). These sites are 1 to 3 km apart in the same wet evergreen forest. In the three study plots a total of 2150 stems (mean density 716 ha–1) covering 122 species in 89 genera and 41 families were enumerated. Species richness was greatest (85 species ha–1) in the undisturbed site UD, intermediate (83) in SF and lowest (80) in FD. Tree density was greatest (855 stems ha–1) in site SF, intermediate (720) in UD and lowest (575) in FD. The forest stand was exceptionally voluminous in site UD (basal area 94.64 m2 ha–1), intermediate (66.9 m2) in SF and least (61.7 m2) in FD, due to tree removal for fuel in the latter sites. Species composition and abundance patterns markedly varied between the three sites. In UD and SF, primary forest species (Cryptocarya bourdillonii , Cullenia exarillata Myristica dactyloides etc.) occurred in greater density. In FD heliophilic secondary forest species (Elaeocarpus venustus, Litsea wightiana, Viburnum punctatum and Vitex altissima) were abundant, while these were absent in UD and SF. The species–area curve did not reach an asymptote in any of the sites on the 1-ha scale. The stand population structure was clearly reverse J shaped in UD and SF, while small stems were 2- to 3-fold fewer in FD. Most trees exhibited clumped distribution of individuals on the 1-ha scale. Variation in the kind and richness of species and their abundance is related to human interference and the need for forest conservation is emphasized.  相似文献

Protistan community grazing rates upon both bacterioplankton and autotrophic picoplankton were estimated using fluorescently-labeled prey and by measurement of extracellular hydrolysis of 4-methylumbelliferyl (MUF) -N-acetylglucosaminide in a eutrophic reservoir and an oligo-mesotrophic lake during phytoplankton blooms. In addition, enzyme methods were optimized in bacterivorous flagellate cultures by two enzyme assays, based on fluorometric detection of protistan digestive activity, which were compared and calibrated independently against flagellate bacterivory. Enzymatic hydrolyses of MUF -N,N,N-triacetylchitotriose and MUF -N-acetylglucosaminide were measured in cell-free (sonicated) and whole-cell (unsonicated) samples. The hydrolysis of both substrates, using the whole-cell enzyme assay at in situ pH, was correlated significantly with total grazing rate of Bodo saltans. Thus the whole-cell enzyme assay with MUF -N-acetylglucosaminide was used for freshwater samples. High-affinity (K m < 1 mol 1–1) and low-affinity (K m > 100 mol 1–1) enzymes were distinguished kinetically in most samples from both systems studied. Activities (V max ) of the high-affinity enzyme varied from 0.24 to 1.43 nmol 1–1 h–1. Protistan community grazing on bacterioplankton was in the range of 0.15–1.36 g C 1–1 h–1. both for lake and reservoir, the differences being observed in grazing on picocyanobacteria (lake, 0.03-0.22 g C 1–1 h–1. reservoir, 0.35–1.56 g C 1–1) h–1. The enzyme activities were correlated significantly with the protistan grazing both on bacterioplakton (r s = 0.62, P < 0.001) and total procaryotic picoplankton (the sum of organic carbon grazed from bacteria and picocyanobacteria, r s = 0.73, P < 0.001) in the eutrophic reservoir. Weaker relationships (r s = 0.42) with a lower slope were found for the oligo-mesotrophic lake. Ingestion rate studies are time-consuming and the digestive enzyme assay with MUF -N-acetylglucosaminide presents a rapid alternative for estimating total protistan prokaryotic picoplanktivory in freshwaters.  相似文献

Taihu Lake is one of the largest freshwater lakes in China. The lake is very shallow with a mean depth of 1.9 m and an area of 2428 km2. This is the first time that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon concentrations in the surface sediments of Taihu Lake have been analyzed. A distinctive spatial distribution of PAHs was observed. Sediments from Lake Wulihu and Meiliang Bay (sites 1–5) had significantly higher PAH concentrations (858–5260 g kg–1 dw) than any other area of Taihu Lake. These high PAH levels were associated with the input of untreated and partially treated domestic and industrial sewage from Wuxi, Changzhou, Wujin and other cities. Special PAH ratios, such as phenanthrene/anthracene and fluoranthene/pyrene, were calculated to evaluate the relative importance of different origins. The data confirmed a relatively high level of petrogenic contamination in sites 1–5 (mainly sewage discharge and the river runoff). The other samples were further from the sources of pollution and have relatively low PAH concentrations (410–768 g kg–1 dw). The sources of PAHs in these sites (6–13) were characterized by combustion-derived PAH contamination associated with atmospheric deposition. In addition, effects range low (ERL) and effects range median (ERM) guidelines (Long et al., 1995) were used to estimate the potential of adverse effects resulting from PAH contamination in Taihu Lake sediments. The results indicated that some sites in the northern part of the lake had levels of PAH that exceeded the ERL value. This was interpreted to mean that acute biological effects may occasionally be expected to occur.  相似文献

Grazing rates of zooplankton were analysed in the summer of 1999 in Yellow Belly Lake, an oligotrophic system in the Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho (U.S.A.). The colonial rotifer Conochilus unicornis was a dominant species in the epilimnion, with densities reaching 20 colonies l–1 (ca. 400 ind. l–1). Clearance rates were measured with an in situ Haney Grazing chamber and synthetic microspheres 5, 9 and 23m in diameter. At epilimnetic temperatures of around 14 °C, mean clearance rates for 5m particles ranged from 30 to 65 l ind.–1 h –1. Clearance rates were 2–9 times higher on the 5m spheres than on the 9 m spheres, and C. unicornis almost never fed on the 23 m spheres. Grazing rates did not change over the diel cycle. Clearance rates declined more than 10-fold as temperatures declined from 14 °C in the epilimnion to 7 °C in the metalimnion. In the epilimnion, grazing by C. unicornis was more important than grazing by crustaceans in the community, at least on particles 9m. The results show the importance of grazing by rotifers in lakes, and the significance of spatial variations that influence grazing rates.  相似文献

The complicated routes by which organic material is channelled up to higher trophic levels via bacteria and protozoans is a major issue in aquatic microbial ecology. Because of the fragile nature of protists it is not straightforward to perform experimental studies of prey–predator interactions. Here we present an approach for the assessment of ciliate grazing on living heterotrophic nanoflagellates. Stationary phase cultures of a heterotrophic nanoflagellate (Cafeteria sp.) were live-stained by allowing them to take up fluorescently labelled macromolecules. Controls revealed that this label persisted for several hours. Fluorescently labelled living flagellates (FLLF) were added into enriched natural assemblages of marine oligotrich ciliates and uptake of FLLF was monitored over time. Oligotrich ciliates did not incorporate fluorescent-labelled macromolecules but a linear FLLF uptake over time was observed for 20–30 min at 20°C. Ingestion rates were 21–46 FLLF h–1 at a concentration of about 2×104 FLLF ml–1, which corresponded to clearance rates of 0.7–0.8 l ciliate–1 h–1. These results are in the same order of reported ciliate grazing on phytoplankton of similar size. This method represents a direct approach to measure ciliate grazing specifically on living heterotrophic nanoflagellates.  相似文献
