ABSTRACT. Two odour receptor cells were physiologically identified within male antennal hair sensillae of the gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar L, and the nun moth, L. monacha L. In the gypsy moth, one cell responded to (+)-disparlure, while a neighbouring cell responded to (-)-disparlure. In the nun moth both cells responded to (+)-disparlure. The lack of sensitivity to (-)-disparlure in the nun moth was corroborated by electroantennogram (EAG) recordings, which indicated no affinity to this enantiomer. Single cell responses of male gypsy moth to different concentrations of the synthetic enantiomers of disparlure were then compared to responses elicited by hexane extracts of female glands of both species. The gypsy moth's extracts stimulated almost exclusively the receptor cell specialized for (+)-disparlure, while both cells were simultaneously stimulated by the extracts of the nun moths. From the response characteristic of the cells it is estimated that pheromone production of the nun moth is about 10% (+) and 90% (-)-disparlure, and that of the gypsy moth is almost 100% (+)-disparlure. Stimulation of the antenna of each species by female gland extracts of both species did not indicate the presence of receptors for other hexane elutable pheromone components in either species.

Fourth instar gypsy moth larvae, Lymantria dispar, from a laboratory colony were transferred between artificial diet and three ages of leaves from a preferred tree, Quercus rubra. Mortality after transfers was generally minimal (<13.3%) and did not differ from mortality of larvae remaining on the same food. Larvae that were transferred to a new food accepted artificial diet and the early season foliage that is normally eaten by early instars as readily as larvae that were not transferred. Pupal weights from larvae continually fed artificial diet or transferred from artificial diet to early season foliage were not significantly different. For trials beginning during June and later, 12-day weight gain and pupal weight were greater for individuals transferred to or reared continually on artificial diet than for individuals transferred to or reared continually on mature foliage.First instars of wild larvae fed artificial diet gained less weight after 3 weeks than foliage-fed first instars. Pupal weights of wild larvae transferred from June foliage to artificial diet as fourth instars were not significantly different from pupal weights of wild larvae remaining on foliage. Thus, the response of laboratory colony larvae to artificial diet was superior to that of wild larvae.

The poplar clearwing moth, Paranthrene tabaniformis Rott. (Lepidoptera: Sesiidae) was successfully reared through two generations on a semi-artificial diet. Because of the long period required for larval development, three diets were used in a labour-extensive method. The mean times required for rearing the first and second generations to adulthood on the most suitable diet averaged about 352 and 250 days, respectively. The survival to the adult stage was 6.8% for the first generation and 43.5% for the second. Biological data on sex ratio, longevity and number of eggs per female are given for adults obtained from the wild.

Abstract. . The independent and interactive effects of temperature and dietary nitrogen content on performance of the gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar L.) were examined. In long-term feeding trials, larvae were reared from egg hatch to pupation on low (1.5%) and high (3.7% dry weight) nitrogen diets, under three temperature regimes. Short-term feeding trials with fourth instars and the same treatments were conducted in order to calculate nutritional indices.
Higher temperatures did not influence larval survival and marginally increased final pupal weights, but strongly decreased long-term development rates. They also accelerated short-term growth and consumption rates, and tended to improve food processing efficiencies. High concentrations of dietary nitrogen increased survival rates and final pupal weights markedly, but decreased long-term development rates only marginally. A high content of dietary nitrogen also accelerated short-term development and growth rates, reduced consumption rates, and improved food digestibility. Insects responded to low nitrogen-content diets primarily by eating faster, rather than by altering efficiency of nitrogen use. In the short-term feeding trials, thermal regime and dietary nitrogen interacted to influence growth rates, overall food processing efficiencies and nitrogen consumption rates. No interactive effects were observed in long-term studies.
This research demonstrates that small changes in thermal regime and ecologically relevant variation in dietary nitrogen content can strongly affect gypsy moth performance. Moreover, various performance parameters are differentially sensitive to the direct and interactive effects of temperature and diet.

A peptide (Lymantria TE) was isolated from brains of the gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar, which stimulates synthesis of ecdysteroid in the testes of larval and pupal insects. This ecdysiotropic peptide was purified and its structure determined to be NH2-IIe-Ser-Asp-Phe-Asp-Glu-Tyr-Glu-Pro-Leu-Asn-Asp-Ala-Asp-Asn-Asn-Glu-Val-Leu-Asp-Phe-OH using protein sequence analysis and electrospray mass spectrometry. The peptide was biphasic in activity, with maximal activity in the pupal testes at 10−13 M and 10−9 M, with a minimum at 10−10 M, and with maxima at 10−15 M and 10−10 M and minimum at 10−13 M for larval testes. 1. It has been predicted that temperature increases of 3.6–5.8 °C would shift the northern distribution limit of Lymantria monacha (Linnaeus) and Lymantria dispar (Linnaeus) by 500–700 km, but these predictions ignore the effects of minimum winter temperatures. It was hypothesised that winter cold can limit range expansion due to high egg mortality in cold temperatures. 2. The present study determined the supercooling points of overwintering eggs of these forest pests, and compared these with recent minimum winter temperatures in the areas of origin of three populations. Eggs from one L. monacha and one L. dispar population from the species' core distribution area in Germany were included, as well as L. monacha eggs from Finland, near the northern border of the species' distribution. 3. The median supercooling points of both species were more than 10 °C lower than the median minimum winter temperatures of their areas of origin, and the median supercooling points of Finnish and German L. monacha eggs did not differ significantly. The median supercooling point of German L. monacha eggs differed from that of German L. dispar eggs. 4. Previous literature on the topic is referenced, and translations of the old German and Russian sources are given. Based on these results, it is argued that the frequent claim that L. monacha eggs can survive cold down to ?40 °C is unsupported, with a value near ?30 °C being a more likely limit. 5. Winter cold alone can limit the predicted range shifts of these species to 200–300 km under 3.6–5.8 °C increase scenarios, which is less than half the value of earlier estimates.

1 The native range of the gypsy moth Lymantria dispar (L.) spans the temperate forests of Eurasia. Across this region, a clinal female flight polymorphism exists; gypsy moth females in eastern Asia are mostly capable of directed flight, those in western and southern Europe are largely incapable of flight and populations distributed across the centre of the distribution exhibit a range of intermediate flight behaviours. 2 Although information exists about the timing and duration of female flight from laboratory and wind tunnel studies, little or no quantitative data are available on average distances flown by Asian gypsy moth females prior to oviposition in the field. This information is critical for estimating risk of contamination at specific ports and transit terminals, as well as for predicting the spread of populations that might someday invade currently uninfested regions of the world. 3 In the present study, an extensive visual survey of gypsy moth egg masses was conducted during a walk through streets and paths in a 3.92 × 5.76 km area in Kanazawa, Japan. This area consisted of a matrix of urban, agricultural and forest land uses. The distribution of egg masses relative to distances from host forests was used to infer the magnitude of pre‐ovipositional female flight. 4 A total of 3172 egg masses was recorded from surveys conducted during the search of a path totalling 384 km. Within urban areas, egg masses were most abundant in the area <1 km from the edge of forest land. 5 These results suggest that most female gypsy moth flight is limited to the area within 1 km of host forests. They also suggest that shipping containers and other parcels located >1 km from forests are at a much lower risk of contamination with Asian gypsy moth egg masses.

The nun moth, Lymantria monacha L., is one of the most important defoliators of Eurasian coniferous forests. Outbreaks during 2011–2015 in the natural/planted larch, and larch‐birch mixed forests of the Greater Khingan Range in Inner Mongolia, China, caused tremendous timber losses from severe defoliation and tree mortality. A series of trapping experiments were conducted in these outbreak areas to evaluate the efficacy of a synthetic species‐specific pheromone lure based on the female pheromone blend of European nun moth populations. Our results clearly show that the nun moth in Inner Mongolia is highly and specifically attracted to this synthetic pheromone, with few gypsy moths (Lymantria dispar) captured. Flight activity monitoring of L. monacha male moths using pheromone‐baited Unitraps at 2 locations during the summer of 2015 indicated that the flight period started in mid‐July, peaking in early August at both locations. Based on male moth captures, there was a strong diurnal rhythm of flight activity throughout the entire scotophase, peaking between 22:00 and 24:00. Unitraps and wing traps had significantly and surprisingly higher catches than the gypsy moth traps. Unitraps fastened to tree trunks 2 m above ground caught significantly more male moths than those at the ground level or at 5 m height. Male L. monacha moths can be attracted to pheromone‐baited traps in open areas 150–200 m distant from the infested forest edge. Our data should allow improvement on the performance of pheromone‐baited traps for monitoring or mass‐trapping to combat outbreaks of this pest in northeastern China.

Abstract. Food selection behaviour, food utilization efficiency and growth performance of a generalist insect, the gypsy moth ( Lymantria dispar (L.), Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae), were examined with respect to variation in food nitrogen concentration. The results suggest that gypsy moth do not suffer physiologically and in fact may benefit from intraplant variation by selective feeding. When provided with diet cubes containing identical nitrogen concentrations, control larvae tended to consume food from a single cube. This behaviour contrasted with that of larvae provided cubes differing in nitrogen concentration. These larvae tended to consume more from the high nitrogen cube, but allocated feeding more evenly among diet cubes than did control larvae. Overall, larvae mixed foods so as to obtain a mean concentration of 2.9-3.2% nitrogen, a concentration assumed to approximate the 'intake target'. Larvae confined to single nitrogen concentrations mitigated the impact of imbalanced diets on body composition via both pre-ingestive and post-ingestive compensation. When confined to a specific nitrogen concentration, larvae adjusted their intake to the point of best compromise. In this case, this was the geometrically closest point to the estimated intake target. Larvae with a choice of foods that deviated more than ±1% from each other in nitrogen concentration grew as well as or better than larvae without a choice but given identical mean nitrogen concentrations. These results demonstrate that selectivity and nitrogen consumption by gypsy moth larvae are altered according to the particular choices available. Insects may benefit from intraplant variation in food quality because such variation provides the opportunity to choose foods and mix them in ways that permit close matching with the intake target. Variation may be particularly important to insects which must offset changing nutritional demands.

    ABSTRACT.
    • 1 Numbers of gypsy moth larvae feeding on each of 922 randomly sampled trees in a Quercus—Acer—Fraxinus forest in southwestern Quebec, Canada were counted in 1979 and in 1980 to quantify the larval feeding preferences as observed in the field for eighteen deciduous and one coniferous tree species at the northern range limit of the gypsy moth.
    • 2 Both the diameter at breast height (dbh) and the estimated foliage biomass of the sampled trees were used to calculate the relative proportions of foliage represented by each of the nineteen tree species in the forest canopy. With these data on availability and utilization of the tree species by the gypsy moth larvae an Ivlev-type electivity index was used to quantify the larval feeding preferences. These preferences observed in the field define the susceptibility of a tree species to attack by the gypsy moth.
    • 3 The feeding preferences calculated using estimated foliage biomass were comparable to the simpler calculation based on dbh (Spearman's rho = 0.79; P= 0.0001). The dbh-based feeding preferences remained almost unchanged in 1979 and 1980 (Spearman's rho = 0.83; P= 0.0001).
    • 4 The composite 1979—80, dbh-based feeding preferences show Quercus rubra, Populus grandidentata, Ostrya virginiana, Amelanchier spp. and Acer saccharum were preferentially attacked by gypsy moth. Prunus serotina, Betula lutea, Acer rubrum, A. pensylvanicum, Fraxinus americana, Ulmus rubra, P. pensylvanicum and B. papyrifera were avoided. All nineteen tree species were, however, utilized to at least some degree by gypsy moth larvae.
    • 5 These results quantitatively affirm and clarify earlier reports of gypsy moth feeding preferences in North America and Eurasia. The advantages and limitations of using an electivity index to estimate the susceptibility of different tree species to attack by folivores like the gypsy moth are discussed.

Rogas lymantriae Watanabe was reared onLymantria dispar (L.) for 125 generations in the laboratory following importation from Japan. No deleterious effects of colonization were observed and one measured parameter, successful parasite emergence, significantly improved over time. Decreased density of the host or conspecific female parasites resulted in higher levels of parasitism and numbers of females in the next generation. During 3 different years, colony production was significantly increased with little difficulty to provide parasites for inoculative releases in the field.

ABSTRACT. Surgical removal of the brain or disconnection of the last abdominal ganglion from the ventral nerve cord prevented sex pheromone release in female Lymantria dispar (L.) (Lymantriidae), as assayed by the male wing-fanning response. The calling behaviour continued to occur in individuals whose terminal abdominal ganglion had been thus isolated, however, indicating that the neural mechanisms controlling calling function independently in the last abdominal ganglion.

    ABSTRACT.
    • 1 Larval gypsy moth Lymantria dispar (L.) mortality depends upon the number and type of plant species consumed as well as the sequence in which they are consumed.
    • 2 When a two-species diet is composed of a favourable and an unfavourable species, larval mortality is higher on the two-species diet than on the diet of the favourable species alone.
    • 3 When a two species diet is composed of a favourable and unfavourable coniferous species, larval mortality is higher on the single conifer species diet than on the two-species diet.
    • 4 Two-species diets, in which one species is a conifer, produce individuals with a greater fecundity than diets of either species alone.
    • 5 The influence of diets composed of two favourable species, on development, size and fecundity, depends both on the relative quality of each of the two plant species and which of the two is consumed by older instars.

Abstract. 1. The effect of increasing concentrations of an iridoid glycoside, catalposide, was tested on a generalist and an adapted specialist lepidopteran, using artificial diets.
    2. Two strains of the gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar (L.) (Lymantriidae), were tested. Larvae of a wild strain showed a negative dose-dependent response to increasing concentrations of catalposide (up to 7.2% dry weight), while a laboratory strain showed no such pattern. Choice tests using the laboratory strain showed that these larvae often preferred diets relatively low in catalposide over those with higher concentrations.
    3. In contrast, larvae of the iridoid glycoside specialist, the buckeye, Junonia coenia Hübner (Nymphalidae), showed a positive dose-dependent response and grew better on diets with higher doses of catalposide.
    4. We tested whether the improved growth of J. coenia at higher concentrations of catalposide may have been due to extra glucose yielded by hydrolysis of catalposide. Larvae were fed increasing doses of glucose equivalent to the amount potentially obtained by hydrolysing the quantities of catalposide used in the previous experiment. However, added glucose did not effect growth, suggesting that increased growth at higher catalposide concentrations was due to increased feeding rates.
