Pacific herring (Clupea pallasii) is divided into three subspecies: two in northeast Europe and one in the north Pacific Ocean. Genetic studies have indicated that the populations in northeast Europe have derived from the northwest Pacific herring recently, or during the last 10–15 kyr, and that they are distinct from the population in the northeast Pacific. In addition, hybridization between the Pacific herring and the Atlantic herring has been documented. Otolith variation has been considered to be largely affected by environmental variation, but here we evaluate whether the genetic differentiation is reflected in otolith shape differences. A clear difference in otolith shape was observed between the genetically differentiated herring species Clupea harengus from the Atlantic and C. pallasii. The otolith shape of C. p. suworowi in the Barents Sea was different from the shape of C. pallasii in northern Norway and C. p. pallasii from the Pacific. Populations of C. p. pallasii, sampled east and west of the Alaska Peninsula, which belong to two genetically different clades of the C. p. pallasii in the Pacific Ocean, show a clear difference in otolith shape. C. p. suworowi and the local C. pallasii peripheral population in Balsfjord in northern Norway are more similar to the northwest Pacific herring (C. p. pallasii) than to the northeast Pacific herring (C. p. pallasii), both genetically and in otolith shape. The Balsfjord population, known to be influenced by introgression of mtDNA from the Atlantic herring, does not show any sign of admixture in otolith shape between the two species. A revised classification, considering the observed genetic and morphological evidence, should rather group the northwest Pacific herring in the Bering Sea together with the European populations of C. pallasii than with the northeast Pacific herring in the Gulf of Alaska.  相似文献

Otolith shape variation of seven Atlantic herring Clupea harengus populations from Canada, the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Ireland, Norway and Scotland, U.K., covering a large area of the species' distribution, was studied in order to see if otolith shape can be used to discriminate between populations. The otolith shape was obtained using quantitative shape analysis, transformed with Wavelet and analysed with multivariate methods. Significant differences were detected among the seven populations, which could be traced to three morphological structures in the otoliths. The differentiation in otolith shape between populations was not only correlated with their spawning time, indicating a strong environmental effect, but could also be due to differing life‐history strategies. A model based on the shape differences discriminates with 94% accuracy between Icelandic summer spawners and Norwegian spring spawners, which are known to mix at feeding grounds. This study shows that otolith shape could become an accurate marker for C. harengus population discrimination.  相似文献

Otolith shape analysis is a powerful method for fish stock identification. We compared the otolith shape of Pagrus pagrus (Linnaeus 1758) along with its distribution in four south-western Atlantic regions where it is commercially fished: Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil, the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone (UA) and the Argentinian Exclusive Fishing Zone (AR). Otolith shapes were compared by Elliptical Fourier and Wavelet coefficients among specimens in a size range with similar otoliths, morphometric parameters and ages. Four potential stocks were identified: one in the AR, a second along the UA which included specimens from southern Brazil with well-marked opaque bands in its otoliths (MRS), the third in southern Brazil with faint or absent opaque bands in its otoliths (FRS) and the fourth along Rio de Janeiro. The difference in the otolith shape among regions followed differences reported using other stock identification techniques. The similarity between otoliths from UA and MRS (ANOVA-like, P > 0.01) can be explained by seasonal short-range migrations. Otoliths shape differences between MRS and FRS (ANOVA-like, P < 0.01) suggest that P. pagrus does not form a homogeneous group in southern Brazil.  相似文献

Newly hatched autumn-spawned herring larvae Clupea harengus were released in two 2500-m3 outdoor mesocosms and reared over a 2-month period. Hydrographic conditions were similar in the two mesocosms, but the average plankton density was initially more than 10 times higher in mesocosm B compared to mesocosm A (>11−1 v. <0.11−1). Half-way through the experiment the feeding conditions reversed with three times higher average densities in mesocosm A than in mesocosm B (>31−1 v. ∼11−1). Herring larvae were sampled with a 0.3-m2 two-chambered net twice weekly, and survivors were harvested by draining the mesocosms at the end of the experiment. Otolith growth trajectories of individual larvae were determined by relating radial otolith size with number of increments from the outer edge of the otolith (days before capture). The increment widths during the first 3 weeks after hatching, including the first-check size, were generally wider among larvae from mesocosm B (relatively good initial feeding conditions) than among those from mesocosm A (poor initial feeding conditions). The otolith growth pattern also confirmed that the surviving herring in mesocosm A belonged to the upper size range of larvae in the mesocosm after only 2–3 weeks from hatching; no such trend was found in mesocosm B. In both mesocosms the otolith size-at-age indicated that with the present sampling gear, herring larvae larger than 20–25 mm were underrepresented in the net samples. The information obtained from otolith-size-at-age is compared with other morphometric and biochemical measures of size and condition of larvae obtained throughout the experiment.  相似文献

Otolith morphology is an efficient tool for the discrimination of fish stocks, populations and species when comparative genetic data are not available. Currently, the relationship between environmental factors and otolith shape is poorly characterized for the European eel (Anguilla anguilla), a highly migratory catadromous species constituting a single, randomly mating stock. The present study analyses the differences in otolith morphology between three Mediterranean eel local stocks from different environmental contexts (i.e. two brackish lagoons and one river). The relationship between otolith shape and otolith size was studied by means of Elliptic Fourier analysis and multivariate statistics. Otolith profile was digitally acquired and Cartesian coordinates were extracted. Partial Least Square (PLS) analysis pointed to continuous allometric growth in size and shape in otoliths from all three sites. In the three environments, shape variations occurred during growth as indicated by the presence of a significant and positive relationship between otolith size and the first PLS latent vector (i.e. which bears most of the information regarding otolith outline). Differences between smaller and larger sized otoliths were investigated using PLS Discriminant Analysis (PLSDA) and cluster analysis. Results indicate that otolith shape is highly uniform at smaller than at larger sizes. These shape differences apparently overlap the initial differentiation of the small otolith outlines acquired by eels during the growing phase as elvers in the marine environment. Data were discussed considering that the physical and chemical habitat variability in brackish lagoons and river could underlie a marked change in otolith shape during the animals' growth.  相似文献

Otolith growth rates of the early life stages of herring Clupea harengus ( n = 472) and smelt Osmerus eperlanus ( n = 348) collected in the Vistula Lagoon (Baltic Sea) during 1997–1999 were analysed. The larvae and early juveniles were not only collected in the same geographical area they were also of the same size (range 15–43 mm standard length, L S), similar ages and were collected during the same seasons (May to July). Although the two clupeid species experienced very similar environmental conditions, there were significant discrepancies in the analysed relationships. The otolith growth of larval and juvenile smelt was very strongly related to somatic growth while temperature had a minor effect. In herring, the effect of somatic growth, although clearly visible and statistically highly significant, was of less importance than temperature. Furthermore, variation in the otolith size and L S relationship was affected by temperature and somatic growth in both species, but the variance of otolith size at L S was higher for herring than for smelt. Although growth backcalculation from otoliths can presently be recommended as an appropriate method for use with both smelt and herring (despite possibly lower precision and accuracy with the latter), other methods referring directly to short-term increment width changes ( e.g. marginal increment analysis) are recommended for smelt but not for herring.  相似文献

Pacific herring (Clupea pallasi) are an abundant and important component of the coastal ecosystems for the west coast of North America. Current Canadian federal herring management assumes five regional herring populations in British Columbia with a high degree of exchange between units, and few distinct local populations within them. Indigenous traditional knowledge and historic sources, however, suggest that locally adapted, distinct regional herring populations may have been more prevalent in the past. Within the last century, the combined effects of commercial fishing and other anthropogenic factors have resulted in severe declines of herring populations, with contemporary populations potentially reflecting only the remnants of a previously more abundant and genetically diverse metapopulation. Through the analysis of 85 archaeological herring bones, this study attempted to reconstruct the genetic diversity and population structure of ancient herring populations using three different marker systems (mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), microsatellites and SNPs). A high success rate (91%) of DNA recovery was obtained from the extremely small herring bone samples (often <10 mg). The ancient herring mtDNA revealed high haplotype diversity comparable to modern populations, although population discrimination was not possible due to the limited power of the mtDNA marker. Ancient microsatellite diversity was also similar to modern samples, but the data quality was compromised by large allele drop-out and stuttering. In contrast, SNPs were found to have low error rates with no evidence for deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, and simulations indicated high power to detect genetic differentiation if loci under selection are used. This study demonstrates that SNPs may be the most effective and feasible approach to survey genetic population structure in ancient remains, and further efforts should be made to screen for high differentiation markers.This study provides the much needed foundation for wider scale studies on temporal genetic variation in herring, with important implications for herring fisheries management, Aboriginal title rights and herring conservation.  相似文献

Engraulis encrasicolus is of great economic importance in the Mediterranean. However, little is known about its stock structure. Otolith shape analysis has been successfully used for fish stock identification. In this study, the stock structure of anchovy caught off the open sea and the coastal area of the Gulf of Tunis, lagoon of Bizerte and Lake of Ichkeul were investigated using otolith shape. Otolith shape was determined by Fourier analysis and then compared among specimens sampled from different areas with forward stepwise canonical discriminant analysis. Significant differences in otolith shape between the open sea and inshore anchovy groups were detected. Otolith shape of anchovy collected in the Lake of Ichkeul was distinct from the other groups. This finding suggests a clear discreteness of the open sea and the continental groups. The data highlighted the potential for using otolith shape analysis for anchovy stock identification, as well as the role of oceanographic features in determining stock separation. These findings will have major implications for anchovy fisheries management in Tunisia. By using a precautionary approach and considering the three areas as separate stocks, fisheries management strategies should be adjusted to achieve optimum sustainable production from each stock and to avoid decreases in genetic variety.  相似文献

Otolith shape and chemistry of Mediterranean horse mackerel Trachurus mediterraneus were simultaneously used to assess the feasibility of using these natural tags to discriminate populations throughout the Black, Marmara, Aegean and eastern Mediterranean Seas. Otolith shape and chemistry analyses showed a similar pattern of differentiation between T. mediterraneus stocks, revealing a clear discreteness of the middle Black Sea (Sinop) and Aegean Sea (Izmir) samples. Otolith upper side length and width, and Na, K, Mg and Ba, were the morphological traits and trace elements, respectively, differing most among groups. Overall assignment of individuals into their original sample was high for both otolith shape and chemistry. Highest reclassification rate was observed for the south-middle Black Sea and Aegean Sea samples for both analyses. Hierarchical cluster analyses also supported high differentiation of the south-middle Black Sea and Aegean Sea samples for both analyses. Mantel's test revealed that the Euclidean distance both for otolith shape ( r =−0·0917, P > 0·05) and chemistry ( r =−0·1248, P > 0·05) between these populations were not significantly associated with their geographical distances.  相似文献

Genetic studies on Atlantic herring, Clupea harengus, have generally revealed a low level of genetic variation over large geographic areas. Genetically distinct herring populations in some of the Norwegian fjords are exceptions, and juvenile herring from the large oceanic herring, Norwegian Spring Spawners (NSS), are often found in mixture with local fjord populations as well as widely distributed in the Barents Sea. Research surveys in the eastern Barents Sea (Goose Bank) in 1993, 1994 and 2001 included collection of herring samples for allozyme analyses. As expected the results identified juveniles from NSS stock, but an additional unique group of herring (low vertebrae number), being almost fixed for alternative alleles at several allozyme loci, was detected. In some cases, the two groups of herring were taken in the same trawl catches as documented by highly significant departure from Hardy—Weinberg expectation with large excess of homozygotes providing evidence for population mixing. Large genetic differences (Nei's genetic distance = 1.53; FST = 0.754) were detected in pairwise comparisons based on five allozyme loci. The two herring groups were also compared with reference samples of Pacific herring, Clupea pallasi, including one sample from Japan Sea and three Alaskan samples. UPGMA dendrogram based on five allozyme loci revealed a close genetic relationship between the low vertebrae herring in the Barents Sea and the group of samples of Pacific herring. Although significant different in allele frequencies, one of the herring samples clustered together with the reference sample from Bering Sea with genetic distance of 0.008 and FST value of 0.032. The close genetic relationship found in this paper, suggest a re-evaluation of the taxonomic status of the Barents Sea herring populations investigated.  相似文献

Trace element concentrations of otoliths from larval herring Clupea harengus collected from known spawning beds in the Celtic and Irish Seas, were investigated using laser ablation ICP-MS and compared with concentrations in the larval cores of juvenile otoliths from the same populations and year class. A range of elements (Mg, Zn, Sr, Ba and Pb) was detectable in early larval otoliths (20–40 µm diameter). Larval otolith concentrations exceeded the larval core concentrations of juvenile otoliths and also the concentrations reported in the literature, for Mg, Zn, Ba and Pb, indicating that the measurement of elements in larval otoliths was severely affected by post-mortem contamination, most likely due to adherence of tissue and endolymph residue on the otolith surface. Comparison of otolith composition between larvae from two freezing treatments showed that contamination from Mg and Zn was more serious in otoliths that had remained in frozen larvae for prolonged periods. Larval populations from the two seas showed significant differences in otolith Sr concentrations, which were consistent over two sampling years. Similar differences were seen in the corresponding juvenile populations. The results show that while early larval otoliths are extremely susceptible post-mortem contamination, Sr concentrations can be reliably measured using laser ablation ICP-MS and for this element, the detection of region specific differences is possible.  相似文献

Viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus (VHSV) infects a wide range of marine fish species. To study the occurrence of VHSV in wild marine fish populations in Norwegian coastal waters and fjord systems a total of 1927 fish from 39 different species were sampled through 5 research cruises conducted in 2009 to 2011. In total, VHSV was detected by rRT-PCR in twelve samples originating from Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus), haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus), whiting (Merlangius merlangus) and silvery pout (Gadiculus argenteus). All fish tested positive in gills while four herring and one silvery pout also tested positive in internal organs. Successful virus isolation in cell culture was only obtained from one pooled Atlantic herring sample which shows that today''s PCR methodology have a much higher sensitivity than cell culture for detection of VHSV. Sequencing revealed that the positive samples belonged to VHSV genotype Ib and phylogenetic analysis shows that the isolate from Atlantic herring and silvery pout are closely related. All positive fish were sampled in the same area in the northern county of Finnmark. This is the first detection of VHSV in Atlantic herring this far north, and to our knowledge the first detection of VHSV in silvery pout. However, low prevalence of VHSV genotype Ib in Atlantic herring and other wild marine fish are well known in other parts of Europe. Earlier there have been a few reports of disease outbreaks in farmed rainbow trout with VHSV of genotype Ib, and our results show that there is a possibility of transfer of VHSV from wild to farmed fish along the Norwegian coast line. The existence of biologically differentiated populations has been credited with a major role in conferring sustainability and in buffering overall productivity of anadromous fish population complexes where evidence for spatial structure is uncontroversial. Here, we describe evidence of correlated genetic and life history (spawning season linked to spawning location) differentiation in an abundant and highly migratory pelagic fish, Atlantic herring, Clupea harengus, in the North Sea (NS) and adjacent areas. The existence of genetically and phenotypically diverse stocks in this region despite intense seasonal mixing strongly implicates natal homing in this species. Based on information from genetic markers and otolith morphology, we estimate the proportional contribution by NS, Skagerrak (SKG) and Kattegat and western Baltic (WBS) fish to mixed aggregations targeted by the NS fishery. We use these estimates to identify spatial and temporal differences in life history (migratory behaviour) and habitat use among genetically differentiated migratory populations that mix seasonally. Our study suggests the existence of more complex patterns of intraspecific diversity than was previously recognized. Sustainability may be compromised if such complex patterns are reduced through generalized management (e.g. area closures) that overlooks population differences in spatial use throughout the life cycle.  相似文献

Otoliths in bony fishes play an important role in the senses of balance and hearing. Otolith mass and shape are, among others, likely to be decisive factors influencing otolith motion and thus ear functioning. Yet our knowledge of how exactly these factors influence otolith motion is incomplete. In addition, experimental studies directly investigating the function of otoliths in the inner ear are scarce and yield partly conflicting results. Herein, we discuss questions and hypotheses on how otolith mass and shape, and the relationship between the sensory epithelium and overlying otolith, influence otolith motion. We discuss (i) the state‐of‐the‐art knowledge regarding otolith function, (ii) gaps in knowledge that remain to be filled, and (iii) future approaches that may improve our understanding of the role of otoliths in ear functioning. We further link these functional questions to the evolution of solid teleost otoliths instead of numerous tiny otoconia as found in most other vertebrates. Until now, the selective forces and/or constraints driving the evolution of solid calcareous otoliths and their diversity in shape in teleosts are largely unknown. Based on a data set on the structure of otoliths and otoconia in more than 160 species covering the main vertebrate groups, we present a hypothetical framework for teleost otolith evolution. We suggest that the advent of solid otoliths may have initially been a selectively neutral ‘by‐product’ of other key innovations during teleost evolution. The teleost‐specific genome duplication event may have paved the way for diversification in otolith shape. Otolith shapes may have evolved along with the considerable diversity of, and improvements in, auditory abilities in teleost fishes. However, phenotypic plasticity may also play an important role in the creation of different otolith types, and different portions of the otolith may show different degrees of phenotypic plasticity. Future studies should thus adopt a phylogenetic perspective and apply comparative and methodologically integrative approaches, including fossil otoliths, when investigating otoconia/otolith evolution and their function in the inner ear.  相似文献

There were no significant differences in otolith chemistry (Li, Mn, Sr, Cd, Ba) of Diplodus vulgaris between sites (distances >100 m) and few differences among locations (distance >10 km) along the south-west coast of Spain. Multivariate analysis of otolith chemistry detected a difference among locations, but a posteriori comparisons could not detect which locations differed. This is one of the few studies to show little variation in otolith chemistry among locations. Of the studies reviewed, <10% showed non-significant differences. It is suggested that the region of the Mediterranean where this study was conducted may be relatively homogeneous in comparison to estuarine and coastal regions where many of the other studies have been conducted.  相似文献

Yellow-legged gulls Larus michahellis from the Atlantic Iberian coast exhibit some phenotypic similarities with the herring gull L. argentatus from Western Europe. To assess this phenomenon and its possible origin, we compared Mediterranean yellow-legged gulls, Atlantic Iberian yellow-legged gulls and herring gulls for several phenotypic traits (morphology, plumage), and used genetic data to determine the evolutionary history of the Atlantic Iberian yellow-legged gulls. Data from mitochondrial cytochrome b gene and microsatellite loci clearly indicate that Atlantic Iberian gulls are closely related to Mediterranean yellow-legged gulls, and do not show stronger signs of introgression with herring gulls relative to other populations of yellow-legged gulls. Atlantic Iberian yellow-legged gulls are more similar to herring gulls in body size and shape than to other yellow-legged gulls populations, but not in mantle colour and wing-tip pattern. Body size and other phenotypic and life history similarities with the herring gull ( L. argentatus argenteus ) such as voice, winter plumage and breeding phenology, previously described in several studies, might thus be interpreted as convergent characters. Within the yellow-legged gull, the high F st-values obtained from four nuclear microsatellite loci indicate substantial population structure and reduced levels of gene flow between gull populations in Mediterranean France and Atlantic Iberia. Differences among these populations in breeding phenology and migration patterns, likely resulting from different local selection pressures, might contribute to this low level of gene flow.  相似文献

Otolith chemical composition differed between juveniles of five fish species ( Solea solea , Solea senegalensis , Platichthys flesus , Diplodus vulgaris and Dicentrarchus labrax ) in nursery areas of six estuaries along the Portuguese coast (Douro, Ria de Aveiro, Mondego, Tejo, Sado and Mira). Spatially consistent patterns in the concentration of some elements were responsible for differences between species. Discrimination of estuaries using data from all species simultaneously averaged 44·7% of correctly classified cases, whilst discrimination of species averaged 76·2%. Moreover, species-related patterns in otolith fingerprints were highlighted when comparing species for each estuarine nursery area, with intra estuarine species discrimination averages ranging from 86·2 to 100·0%. Similarities in the otolith elemental fingerprints were larger between species with close phylogeny and ecology, particularly between flatfish and perciform species. In addition to the differences in physiological regulation of species, specific microhabitat use in a common environment was suggested as a relevant factor for the differentiation of otolith chemistry among species occurring in the same locations. Despite positive results in specific estuaries, variation in otolith composition limited the use of species as proxies to classify others to their system of origin.  相似文献

An analysis of genetic variation is made according to four allozyme loci of reproductive (spawning) groups of oligovertebrate herring Clupea pallasii collected in various bays of the White Sea and the south-eastern part of the Barents Sea in 1995–2002. The temporal stability of genetic characteristics during several years is shown. The analysis of genetic variation revealed a significant difference between herring from the south-eastern part of the Barents Sea and spring-spawning and summer-spawning herring from inner bays of the White Sea. The analysis of geographic variation of genetic characteristics of spawning aggregations revealed the change in frequencies of alleles of loci LDH-2* and MDH-4* from the north-east to the south-west along the coast.  相似文献

Gillnet sampling and analyses of otolith shape, vertebral count and growth indicated the presence of three putative Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus L.) populations mixing together over the spawning season February–June inside and outside an inland brackish water lake (Landvikvannet) in southern Norway. Peak spawning of oceanic Norwegian spring spawners and coastal Skagerrak spring spawners occurred in March–April with small proportions of spawners entering the lake. In comparison, spawning of Landvik herring peaked in May–June with high proportions found inside the lake, which could be explained by local adaptations to the environmental conditions and seasonal changes of this marginal habitat. The 1.85 km2 lake was characterized by oxygen depletion occurring between 2.5 and 5 m depth between March and June. This was followed by changes in salinity from 1–7‰ in the 0–1 m surface layer to levels of 20–25‰ deeper than 10 m. In comparison, outside the 3 km long narrow channel connecting the lake with the neighboring fjord, no anoxic conditions were found. Here salinity in the surface layer increased over the season from 10 to 25‰, whereas deeper than 5 m it was stable at around 35‰. Temperature at 0–5 m depth increased significantly over the season in both habitats, from 7 to 14°C outside and 5 to 17°C inside the lake. Despite differences in peak spawning and utilization of the lake habitat between the three putative populations, there was an apparent temporal and spatial overlap in spawning stages suggesting potential interbreeding in accordance with the metapopulation concept.  相似文献
