The social behaviour of a group of eight moustached tamarins,Saguinus mystax, (five males, three females) was studied on Padre Isla in northeastern Peru. About 60% of all allogrooming was done by the two adult males in the group, and about 11% by a young adult female. All other group members groomed very little. The adult breeding female received more grooming than any other group member. After the death of the adult female (preyed upon by an anaconda) the amount of active allogrooming remained constant for all group members except for the young adult female, who increased her contribution to about 30%. Her preferred grooming partner was the subadult female, which generally screamed when being groomed by the young adult female and terminated grooming by going away. This kind of grooming relation is termed “forced grooming” and is interpreted as a possible social control mechanism. The young adult female groomed the adult males more often after the death of the adult female than before. This might have had the function of strengthening the social bond with the adult males and in obtaining the breeding position in the group. After the death of the adult female, the vulva of the young adult female grew to full adult size. Agonistic behaviour was less frequent than allogrooming. Most aggressive interactions (50%) originated from the subadult male of the group. The young adult female was the target of most of these aggressions. Extremely little aggression occurred between the three females. The young adult female was the only individual who tried to emigrate from the group during the study period. Her attempt to join a neighbour group failed due to rejection by all four members of this group. All group members participated in carrying an infant, but the adult males and the young adult female carried most frequently. Contribution to infant carrying varied with the infant's age.  相似文献

Immunologically damaged Strongyloides venezuelensis adult worms were examined for their mucosal invasion ability and secretion of heparin-binding adhesion substances. S. venezuelensis was expelled from male Wistar rats 4 to 5 weeks after infection. Four-week-old adult worms were smaller and had fewer eggs than 1-week-old adult worms. One-week-old, 4-week-old, and 5-week-old adult worms equally established in the recipient mouse intestine when surgically implanted. Adult worms of 4 and 5 weeks of age secreted adhesion substances as much as 1-week-old adult worms. There was no difference in the heparin-binding activities and the lectin-binding profile of adhesion substances among adult worms of different ages. The rate of secretion of adhesion substances from the mouth was also identical. Heparin-binding activities were detected in crude adult worm proteins; however, proteins of 5-week-old adult worms had weaker heparin-binding activities than those of 1-week-old adult worms. Western blotting revealed that a number of heparin-binding proteins were lost in 5-week-old adult worms. A heparin-binding protein of 42. 0 kDa, which was consistently expressed in adult worms, was a possible component of heparin-binding adhesion substances which are secreted from the mouth.  相似文献

Neural messengers affect Drosophila heart rate. Serotonin increases larval, pupal, and adult heart rate. Octopamine and dopamine are inactive in larva, decrease pupal rate, and increase adult heart rate. Acetylcholine and nicotine decrease larval and pupal heart rate, while acetylcholine decreases and nicotine increases adult heart rate. Muscarine decreases pupal heart rate, but is inactive in larva and adult. GABA is inactive in larva and adult, but decreases pupal heart rate. Glutamate is inactive in larva and pupa, but decreases adult heart rate. Proctolin decreases heart rate in all three stages. Caffeine acts only to decrease adult heart rate.  相似文献

Natural selection on juveniles is often invoked as a constraint on adult evolution, but it remains unclear when such restrictions will have their greatest impact. Selection on juveniles could, for example, mainly limit the evolution of adult traits that mostly develop prior to maturity. Alternatively, selection on juveniles might primarily constrain the evolution of adult traits that experience weak or context-dependent selection in the adult stage. Using a comparative study of dragonflies, I tested these hypotheses by examining how a species’ larval habitat was related to the evolution of two adult traits that differ in development and exposure to selection: adult size and male ornamentation. Whereas adult size is fixed at metamorphosis and experiences consistent positive selection in the adult stage, ornaments develop throughout adulthood and provide context-dependent fitness benefits. My results show that species that develop in less stable larval habitats have smaller adult sizes and slower rates of adult size evolution. However, these risky larval habitats do not limit ornament expression or rates of ornament evolution. Selection on juveniles may therefore primarily affect the evolution of adult traits that mostly develop prior to maturity.  相似文献

Adult-associated chemical cues can stimulate settlement and metamorphosis of invertebrate larvae into habitats with an enhanced likelihood of juvenile and adult survival. For example, sediments from adult fiddler crab habitat stimulate fiddler crab megalopae to metamorphose (molt) sooner than sediments without adult cues. A similar stimulation of molting occurs after exposure to waterborne chemical cues from adult habitats and to exudates and extracts of adult crabs. We tested whether sediments from habitats without adult Uca pugnax (Smith), which do not stimulate molting of their megalopae, could become stimulatory through brief exposure to adult crabs. Sediments were collected from tidal flats at several distances (∼ 1 m, ∼ 50 m, and ∼ 5.4 km) from adult habitats, and incubated for 24 h with or without adult crabs. Molting rates of laboratory-reared megalopae exposed for 48 h to adult-conditioned sediments were compared to those for untreated controls. Sediments collected in or within 1 m of adult habitat elicited the highest molting rates, and natural sediments from 50 m and 5.4 km had little or no effect on molting. However, incubating sediments collected away from adult habitat with adult crabs produced a higher molting response, and the magnitude of the enhancement increased with distance from adult habitat. Results suggest that the chemical cues that adult crabs release are retained by sediments and consequently stimulate molting of megalopae, regardless of the nature of the sediments themselves. Lack of chemical cues may retard colonization of newly created or heavily disturbed habitats that are otherwise suitable settlement and adult habitat.  相似文献

Juveniles of Stegastes nigricans occur in adult colonies, solitarily, and occasionally in juvenile colonies. We concentrated on solitary juveniles and those in adult colonies. We examined the costs and benefits of different settlement strategies, quantified the territory requirements of adults, and investigated the process of how juveniles make the transition to adult territorial fish. An adequate adult territory lies next to those of other adults, is proportional in area to the size of the adult, and contains a refuge tunnel whose entrance is sufficiently large. Compared with solitary juveniles, those <4 cm total length inhabiting adult colonies experienced reduced heterospecific competition for algal food and consequently benefited from a greater density of algae. A cost of recruiting into an adult colony, however, was increased attacks by adults. Juveniles that settled in adult colonies avoided attacks by retreating into small holes inaccessible to adults. As juveniles in adult colonies grew, they were chased less often by adults, whereas they themselves chased adults and heterospecific fish more often. Because territory size correlated with fish size in adult colonies, its area had to expand as the young fish grew, and that expansion was done at the expense of neighbors. Obtaining the space needed by an adult may be possible only when the juvenile settles directly into an adult colony. Juveniles that first settle down solitarily, or in juvenile colonies, may later attempt to enter adult colonies. However, because they do so as larger juveniles, they would have difficulty insinuating themselves into small refuges, which is essential for retreat from the adults. The present study investigated the preference of prepubescent and adult rats for an unrelated conspecific over a closely related conspecific (e.g., father, mother). Preference was measured by the amount of time spent in the vicinity of the stimulus animals as well as who was visited first. To prevent mating behavior, stimulus animals were housed behind wire-mesh. Experiment 1 determined if adult female offspring prefer an unrelated, unfamiliar adult male or their father. The preference of adult female rats was independent of kinship. Experiment 2 evaluated the preference of prepubescent female and male offspring for an unrelated, unfamiliar adult male or their father. The preference of prepubescent female and male rats was also independent of kinship. Experiment 3 evaluated the preference of adult male offspring for an unrelated, unfamiliar adult female or their mother. The preference of adult male rats was independent of kinship. In summary, prepubescent and adult rats do not demonstrate preference for kin vs. non-kin (as measured by time spent near stimulus animals or who was visited first). Although kin recognition provides a mechanism for inbreeding avoidance (Wilson, 1987), in the present study adult rats show no evidence of inbreeding avoidance.  相似文献

We explored the effect of extracellular matrix (ECM) produced by fetal and adult hepatocytes on tissue-specific gene expression and proliferation of fetal and adult hepatocytes. Adult hepatocytes ECM strongly induced expression of both albumin and HNF-4 in adult hepatocytes. In contrast, fibroblast ECM reduced the expression of mRNAs for albumin and alpha-fetoprotein in fetal hepatocytes. Adult hepatocytes ECM also increased the activity of liver-specific enzymes of adult hepatocytes (DPP IV and glucose-6-phosphatase) in both fetal and adult hepatocytes, while fetal hepatocyte-derived ECM increased activity of the fetal hepatocyte enzyme GGT in fetal hepatocytes. Fibroblast ECM was inhibitory for the activity of all enzymes assayed. Removal of heparin chains from the various matrices by pretreatment of the ECM with heparinase resulted in reduction of glucose-6-phosphatase and DPP IV in adult hepatocytes. Removal of chondroitin sulfate chains from fetal hepatocyte-derived ECM resulted in loss of induction of GGT in the fetal cells. Fetal hepatocytes proliferated best on adult hepatocyte-derived ECM. Adult hepatocytes showed only modest proliferation on both fetal and adult hepatocytes ECM and their growth was inhibited by fibroblast ECM. In conclusion, adult hepatocyte ECM better supports the expression of adult genes, whereas fetal hepatocyte ECM induced expression of fetal genes. Fibroblast derived-ECM was inhibitory for both proliferation and tissue-specific gene expression in fetal and adult hepatocytes. The data support a role for heparan sulfate being the active element in adult ECM, and chondroitin sulfate being the active element in fetal ECM.  相似文献

Environments experienced during development have long‐lasting consequences for adult performance and fitness. The “environmental matching” hypothesis predicts that individuals perform best when adult and developmental environments match whereas the “silver spoon” hypothesis expects that fitness is higher in individuals developed under favorable environments regardless of adult environments. Temperature and nutrition are the two most influential determinants of environmental quality, but it remains to be elucidated which of these hypotheses better explains the long‐term effects of thermal and nutritional histories on adult fitness traits. Here we compared how the temperature and nutrition of larval environment would affect adult survivorship and reproductive success in the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. The aspect of nutrition focused on in this study was the dietary protein‐to‐carbohydrate (P:C) ratio. The impact of low developmental and adult temperature was to improve adult survivorship. High P:C diet had a negative effect on adult survivorship when ingested during the adult stage, but had a positive effect when ingested during development. No matter whether adult and developmental environments matched or not, females raised in warm and protein‐enriched environments produced more eggs than those raised in cool and protein‐limiting environments, suggesting the presence of a significant silver spoon effect of larval temperature and nutrition. The effect of larval temperature on adult egg production was weak but persisted across the early adult stage whereas that of larval nutrition was initially strong but diminished rapidly after day 5 posteclosion. Egg production after day 5 was strongly influenced by the P:C ratio of the adult diet, indicating that the diet contributing mainly to reproduction had shifted from larval to adult diet. Our results highlight the importance of thermal and nutritional histories in shaping organismal performance and fitness and also demonstrate how the silver spoon effects of these aspects of environmental histories differ fundamentally in their nature, strength, and persistence.  相似文献

为探讨印迹基因H19的甲基化状态与ES小鼠胚胎发育之间的关系, 以遗传背景相同的正常成年对照小鼠、22只成年ES小鼠和8只新生死亡的ES小鼠以及不同传代次数的ES细胞为实验材料, 利用甲基化敏感性限制性内切酶-PCR技术分别检测了其印迹基因H19的5′非翻译区两个位点的甲基化状态。结果表明, 发育至成年的ES小鼠印迹基因H19所检测位点的甲基化状态与正常成年对照小鼠之间没有差异, 而新生死亡的ES小鼠印迹基因H19所检测位点的甲基化状态与成年ES小鼠以及正常成年对照小鼠相比则存在明显差异。推测ES细胞中印迹基因H19所检测位点的甲基化状态与成年ES小鼠以及正常成年对照小鼠之间可能存在 差异。  相似文献

Infant tolerance by adult males has been observed in many primate species with multimale–multifemale mating systems, but males do not usually initiate interactions with infants. In male philopatric species, such as spider monkeys, adult males within a community exhibit high levels of cooperation and affiliation, and they might therefore be motivated to create bonds with potential future allies. Based on this hypothesis we predicted that adult male spider monkeys would participate in infant handling more than adult females and they would preferentially direct handling toward male infants. Between January 2008 and July 2010, we collected 884?h of observation on a community of wild spider monkeys at Runaway Creek Nature Reserve in Belize. During this period we observed 120 incidences of affiliative interactions between infants and adults other than their mother. The adult initiated the majority of nonmother adult–infant interactions (78?%). All available infants (5 males, 7 females) were handled during the study. All 9 of the community adult males handled infants but only 7 of 14 adult females did so. Adult males handled infants significantly more often than did adult females and males also handled young infants more often than older infants. Significant infant sex differences in handling appeared in infants >6?mo when adult males handled males significantly more than females. The patterns of infant handling among age–sex class dyads reflect the affiliative social patterns that we see in adult spider monkeys. These results provide support for the hypothesis that adult males preferentially handle male infants as a strategy for fostering social bonds.  相似文献

Seasonal differences in behavioral interactions between wild-caught adult and juvenile meadow voles, Microtus pennsylvanicus, were measured in paired encounters in a neutral arena. Seasonal differences existed in the adult-juvenile paired encounters. Early in the breeding season (May—Aug.) paired encounters between adult males and juvenile males were more agonistic than other adultjuvenile pairings. Late in the breeding season (Sep.—Dec.) adult female-juvenile male encounters were more agonistic than other adult-juvenile pairings. Odor preferences of juveniles were determined in a Y-maze olfactometer. Juveniles did not demonstrate seasonal differences in odor preference. Males preferred the odor of adult females to the odor of adult males or their own odor. Females preferred the scent of an adult male to the odor of an adult female, but did not show a preference between their own odor and the odor of an adult male or an adult female. The results are consistent with hypotheses that state in a promiscuous species, females should be philopatric, and males should disperse as a consequence of adult competition. The data suggest that agonistic behavior by adults may regulate juvenile dispersal and recruitment, and define the composition of overwintering groups.  相似文献

Adult male mice (Mus musculus) which have a prior history ofexperience with other adult male and adult female mice readilyproduce 70 kHz ultrasonic vocalizations in the presence of urinefrom adult females but not in the presence of urine from adultmales. Urine from immatures of either sex does not elicit ultrasoundsfrom socially experienced adult males. The ultrasound elicitingpotency of adult male urine was not improved substantially followingcastration of adult males, injection of testosterone propionateto castrated adult males, administration of estradiol benzoateto castrated adult males, or neonatal castration. Ovarian hormonesdo not appear to be necessary for either the appearance at puberty,or the maintenance during adulthood, of the ultrasound elicitingcues of female urine. Stage of estrus did not have a major modulatingeffect on urinary cues eliciling male ultrasounds. Treatmentsthat did not substantially reduce the signal value of adultfemale urine include ovariectomy before or after puberty, ovariectomywith adrenalectomy, and neonatal administration of testosterone.The administration of testosterone to ovariectomized adult females,and hypophyseclomy, virtually eliminated the ability of urinefrom adult females to elicit ultrasounds from socially experiencedadult males. The implication of pituitary hormones in the modulationof female urinary cues thai elicit ultrasounds is particularlyinteresting since pituitary factors are also implicated in theproximal causation of postparturient maternal aggression, whichadult male ultrasounds may function to moderate.  相似文献

A method has been developed for the long-term culture of dissociated adult mouse dorsal root ganglia (DRG). Of critical importance to the success of this technique was a three-hour incubation in collagenase which softened the DRG and permitted gentle dissociation. The morphological and electrophysiological features of the dissociated adult DRG were similar to those observed in previous studies of immature (i.e., embryonic and newborn) DRG in culture and also to those of adult DRG in situ. With regard to electrophysiological work, the adult DRG neurons are superior to embryonic and newborn neurons because of their larger size and greatly increased survival in culture (no degeneration for first six days, and thereafter a relatively slow decrease). The adult neurons regenerated nerve fibers to an extent comparable to that of immature neurons. Therefore, the adult DRG cultures might be useful to study factors influencing regeneration in the adult mammalian nervous system. The adult cultures might also be useful to investigated factors influencing the aging process.  相似文献

The temporal expression of elastogenesis is unique among connective tissues in that elastin production occurs primarily during late fetal and early neonatal periods and is essentially fully repressed once fiber assembly is completed. To test whether elastin synthesis in adult nuchal ligament fibroblasts is permanently repressed or whether the cells retain the ability to reinitiate production upon proper stimulation, we examined in adult ligament cells various parameters known to be involved in the regulation of elastin production. Elastin synthetic capacity, as determined by the levels of steady-state tropoelastin mRNA, of adult tissue was significantly decreased relative to fetal tissue. Likewise, fibroblasts grown from explants of adult ligament had about a fourfold decrease in elastin production and elastin-specific mRNA levels. On the other hand, adult cells were similar to fetal ligament cells in that they were sensitive to glucocorticoid stimulation and demonstrated chemotactic responsiveness to elastin peptides. Since our previous studies have shown that the extracellular matrix (ECM) plays an important role in influencing elastin phenotypic expression, fetal and adult fibroblasts were grown on slices of nonviable adult ligament to test if repression of elastin production was directed by factors in ECM of adult tissues. No change in elastin synthesis was detected with either cell type grown on adult ligament, whereas both fetal and adult cells demonstrated increased elastin production in response to contact with fetal ligament. These results suggest that adult ligament ECM does not provide a metabolic signal to shut off the elastin gene and that adult cells remain responsive to external stimuli that may reinitiate high levels of elastin synthesis.  相似文献

This paper presents data on the basal gene expression patterns, determined by microarray analysis, for cultured neonatal and normal adult striatal astrocytes, and for comparison, for astrocytes isolated directly from adult rat striatum (in vivo adult astrocytes). Of the 1176 genes on the Clontech array, 1101 were expressed in one of the three types of astrocyte samples. Nineteen of the genes were expressed only in the astrocytes taken directly from adult rats (in vivo adult). The cultured neonatal astrocytes expressed many genes at a two-fold or greater level than their expression in cultured adult astrocytes, including genes in the adhesion, cytoskeleton, and extracellular matrix (ECM) family, signal transduction genes, and genes related to apoptosis, DNA-binding, and cell cycle regulation. Overall the results support the concept that cultured neonatal astrocytes are more "activated" than cultured adult cells, although the adult cells expressed higher levels of many metabolic enzyme and protease/protease inhibitor genes.  相似文献

Cell population and neuropile morphology of larval and adult brains of the monarch butterfly, Danaus plexippus plexippus, L., are compared. The larval brain is in continuous transition, the processes of adult brain development being underway from the earliest larval stages. It is characterized by a less diverse population of cells and more homogenous fiber areas than those of the adult. Neuroblasts, which divide to form the neurones of the adult brain, occur either in discrete proliferation centers or scattered among the larval ganglion cells. The larval brain contains, in addition to small homogeneous antennal centers and a distinct larval optic center, rapidly developing adult optic centers, corpora pedunculata, and protocerebral bridge. The larval brain lacks a central body. Major differences between larval and adult brains are clearly related to the increased dependence of the adult upon sensory input from the eyes and antennae.  相似文献

We examined the mechanism by which Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba, shrink, and suggest that cellular changes occurring during shrinkage may provide a means for identifying krill that have undergone shrinkage. We compared the muscle tissue of juvenile, adult and shrunken adult krill to identify changes in cell number associated with maturity and shrinkage. Comparison of the absolute number and density of nuclei in abdominal segments of juvenile, adult and shrunken adult krill revealed differences related to maturity and shrinkage. Shrunken adult krill had nearly twice as many nuclei per unit area than adult krill that had not shrunk. This suggests that krill shrink by a reduction in cell volume, rather than cell loss. This simply detected variation in muscle cell nucleus density may be useful in distinguishing shrunken adult krill from juveniles, and contribute to our knowledge of age structure in natural populations.  相似文献

对实验室内不同光周期条件下的布氏田鼠陌生成体—亚成体间社会行为模式的初步研究显示:不同光周期下成体对亚成体(特别是对雄性亚成体)的行为反应具性二型特征,长光照周期下(light:dark,14L:10D)成体与亚成体同性组合间的争斗较异性组合间的明显,容忍性低,其中成体雄对亚成体雄尤甚。短光照周期下(light:dark,10L:14D)成体雄对亚成体雄、成体雌对亚成体雌及亚成体雄的相容性均较成体雄对亚成体雌的容忍性低,尤成体雌对亚成体雄的排斥表现更为突出,其容忍性也较长光照条件下对应组的低。结果表明,不同光周期条件下布氏田鼠成体与亚成体间的社会行为模式不同。在自然条件下,这些行为模式是其对环境季节变化的一种有效适应,它影响种群中未成年个体存活、补充、扩散重组以及社群结构、种群空间格局季节变化,对该鼠的生存和繁殖有利。  相似文献
