Daily increment validation in fish otolith is fundamental to studies on fish otolith microstructure, age determination and life history traits, and thus is critical for species conservation and fishery management. However, it has never been done for Schizothoracine fish, which is the dominant component of fish fauna in the Tibetan Plateau. This study validated the daily increment formation of Gymnocypris selincuoensis, as a representative of Schizothoracine fish, by monitoring the growth of hatchery‐reared larvae group and wild‐caught post‐yolk‐sac larvae group under controlled experiments. The results from monitoring the hatchery‐reared larvae group showed that sagittae and lapilli were found in yolk‐sac larvae, and formed 5–7 days before hatching, but asterisci were not found until 11 days post‐hatching. The first increment in sagittae and lapilli was formed in the first day after hatching. The daily periodicity of increment formation was examined and confirmed in sagittae and lapilli of both larvae groups. However, sagittae were better for age determination than lapilli for larvae at earlier days. For larval G. selincuoensis older than 50 days, lapilli were the only otolith pair suitable for larvae daily age determination. This study validated the daily increment formation in Schizothoracine fish for the first time has primary implications to other fishes from this subfamily.

This assesses features of otoliths from laboratory-reared embryos, larvae and juvenile European chub Squalius cephalus from hatching to 180 days post-hatching (dph). We observed the development of the three pairs of otoliths (lapilli, sagittae and asterisci) and more precisely shape changes, as well as timing and deposition rate of increments of the lapilli. The lapilli and the sagittae were present at hatching, whereas the asterisci formed between 20 and 30 dph. The lapillus and sagitta shapes were round until 20 dph. From 60 dph the anterior and the posterior rostra of the sagittae were well developed, but very thin, making this otolith too fragile to manipulate for further studies of shape and validation of otolith increment deposition rate. The lapilli provided reliable age estimates for free embryos, larvae and juveniles up to 120 dph. However, caution should be taken when ageing fish older than 150 dph as an underestimation was noticeable. The regression of the number of otolith increments on age showed a slope and an intercept not significantly different from 1 and 0, respectively, which indicated that otolith growth increments were deposited on a daily basis, with the first microincrement occurring at hatching. Increment counts were consistent between three interpreters, indicating a consistent and reliable age estimate. This study validates that the otolith increment deposition rate can be used to assess hatching dates and daily growth of wild S. cephalus under 150 dph and in environments similar to the conditions used in this study.

Allometric growth is a common feature during fish larval development. It has been proposed as a growth strategy to prioritize the development of body segments related to primordial functions like feeding and swimming to increase the probability of survival during this critical period. In the present study we evaluated the allometric growth patterns of body segments associated to swimming and feeding during the larval stages of Pacific red snapper Lutjanus peru. The larvae were kept under intensive culture conditions and sampled every day from hatching until day 33 after hatching. Each larva was classified according to its developmental stage into yolk-sac larva, preflexion larva, flexion larva or postflexion larva, measured and the allometric growth coefficient of different body segments was evaluated using the potential model. Based on the results we can infer the presence of different ontogenetic priorities during the first developmental stages associated with vital functions like swimming during the yolk-sac stage [total length (TL) interval = 2.27–3.005 mm] and feeding during the preflexion stage (TL interval = 3.007–5.60 mm) by promoting the accelerated growth of tail (post anal) and head, respectively. In the flexion stage (TL interval = 5.61–7.62 mm) a change in growth coefficients of most body segments compared to the previous stage was detected, suggesting a shift in growth priorities. Finally, in the postflexion stage (TL interval = 7.60–15.48 mm) a clear tendency to isometry in most body segments was observed, suggesting that growth priorities have been fulfilled and the larvae will initiate with the transformation into a juvenile. These results provide a framework of the larval growth of L. peru in culture conditions which can be useful for comparative studies with other species or in aquaculture to evaluate the changes in larval growth due to new conditions or feeding protocols.

Otolith microstructure of reared and wild cresthead flounder Pseudopleuronectes schrenki larvae and juveniles was used to investigate the daily periodicity of ring formation, morphological change and unique otolith structure related to important life events. By comparing microstructural features of P. schrenki with those reported for other flatfish species, it was shown that there may be microstructural features that are common to all flatfishes. In the sagittae and lapillus, a check (a distinct ring) was formed in the centre of otoliths at c. 6 days post hatching, and the daily formation of rings observed outside the check was confirmed. During metamorphosis, accessory primordia (AP) of otolith growth were formed on the outer edge of the sagittae, and the shape of the sagittae became more complex. No AP was formed on the lapilli, however, and otolith rings were concentrically formed throughout the larval and juvenile (≤51·6 mm standard length, LS) stages. It is proposed, therefore, that lapilli are more appropriate than sagittae for analysis throughout the larval and juvenile (≤51·6 mm LS) stages. During metamorphosis, unique rings that are relatively wide and show weak contrast are formed on lapilli (metamorphosing zone, MZ). Hence, the duration of metamorphosis, larval duration and the days of juvenile life can be estimated by the number of rings within the MZ, using rings from the check to outermost ring of the MZ, and that of rings formed outside MZ, respectively. The formation of AP on sagittae as well as the absence of AP, bilateral asymmetry and the formation of a unique structure during metamorphosis on lapilli have also been reported for other flatfishes.

Synopsis Otolith microstructure of about 120 Gymnocypris potanini larvae from the Minjiang River in China was examined and analyzed. Larvae had multiple primordia in most lapilli and sagittae, while had only one primordium in a few specimens. There had only one nucleus in otoliths of the larvae, except for some few specimens with 2 nuclei. The transparence of many otoliths differed from center to edge, and part of them could be divided into inner low optically dense zone (LODZ) and outer optically dense zone (ODZ). Based on increment clarity, otoliths of this species could be classified into three types, which were otolith with subtile increments, otolith with almost identified increments, and otolith with fairly clear increments characterized by high contrast. The last two types of otolith accounted for 87.07% in lapilli and 94.46% in sagittae, respectively. Increment clarity of sagitta was higher than that of lapillus. Natural checks were identified in 32.50% lapilli and 48.33% sagittae. These checks primarily located in the first to sixth increment. According to the number of increments in otoliths, the age of this batch larvae was 14 – 22 days, birth date was on June 17 – 25, and average growth rate of body length was 0.8936 ± 0.08769 mm/d.

Morphological development, including fin and labyrinth organ, body proportions and pigmentation, in laboratory-reared larval and juvenile climbing perch Anabas testudineus was described and behavioral features under rearing condition were observed. Body lengths (BL) of larvae and juveniles were 1.9 ± 0.1 (mean ± SD) mm just after hatching (day-0), 8.7 ± 1.3 mm on day-19, reaching 18.4 ± 2.1 mm on day-35 after hatching. Aggregate fin ray numbers attained full complements in juveniles larger than 8.3 mm BL. Preflexion larvae started feeding on day-2 following formation of the upper and lower jaws, the yolk being completely absorbed by day-7 after hatching. Teeth appeared in flexion larvae larger than 5 mm BL on day-6, with cannibalism starting shortly after and continuing with further growth. Melanophores on the body increased with growth, a large dark spot developing on the lateral midline around caudal margin of the body in the postflexion and juvenile stages. The labyrinth organ differentiated in postflexion larvae larger than 7.2 mm BL on day-16, with air-breathing starting at the same time. Body proportions attained constant in postflexion larvae larger than 7.0 mm BL, and habitat of fish shifted from bottom to mid-layer. With the exception of fin ray numbers, the above morphological developments corresponded to behavioral shifts that occurred in the postflexion stage (ca. 7 mm BL), their subsequent continuity illustrating that the species possessed most juvenile-equivalent functions from ca. 7 mm BL.

The electric yellow cichlid Labidochromis caeruleus is a mouth‐brooding haplochromine cichlid from Lake Malawi and one of the most popular cichlids in the ornamental fish industry. To investigate the early development of L. caeruleus from hatching until the juvenile stage, we studied its morphological development and allometric growth patterns. In newly‐hatched larvae, most organs and body parts were not yet differentiated and continued to develop until 15 days post hatching (dph). The yolk sac was depleted at 13 dph. There was allometric growth, primarily in the anterior and posterior regions of the body, and inflection points when trajectories of allometric growth changed. Head and tail growth was prioritized, suggesting that body parts linked to feeding and swimming behaviour mature earlier than the rest of the body. Additionally, growth patterns revealed that development of organs related to vital functions such as branchial respiration, sensation, exogenous feeding and swimming was prioritized. Comparisons with other African and Neotropical cichlids revealed differences in ontogenetic processes and allometric growth along the anterior–posterior axis as well as variation in developmental timing. These results indicate how early morphological development and ontogenic processes might respond to the distinctive parental care observed in mouth‐brooding cichlids.

Embryonic, larval, and juvenile development of a Taiwanese cyprinid fish, Candidia barbatus, is described from laboratory-reared specimens. The eggs, measuring 1.8–2.1 mm in diameter, were demersal, almost spherical in shape, transparent and unpigmented, with a pale yellow yolk and no oil globule. Hatching occurred 56–69 h after fertilization, the newly hatched larvae measuring 4.9–5.3 mm in body length (BL) with 25–26 + 13–14 = 39–40 myomeres. The yolk was completely absorbed at 7.6 mm BL. Notochord flexion was initiated at 6.8 mm BL and finished at 7.6 mm BL. Aggregate numbers of all fin rays were completed at 12 mm BL. Barbels on the upper jaw appeared near the corner of the mouth at 17 mm BL. Eggs of the species closely resembled those of its related cyprinid genera, Opsariichthys and Zacco. Larvae and juveniles of C. barbatus were similar to those of O. uncirostris subspp., Z. platypus, and Z. pachycephalus, but differed from the latter in the process of disappearance of the adipose finfold (postflexion larval stage), barbels on upper jaw (juvenile stage), and pigmentation on the lateral body surface (postflexion larval and juvenile stages). Although C. barbatus also differed from the Z. temminckii species' group [Z. temminckii and Zacco sp. (sensu Hosoya, 2002)] in having barbels, larvae and juveniles of the former showed more similarity to the latter species group than to O. uncirostris subspp., Z. platypus, and Z. pachycephalus, from the aspect of head and body pigmentation.

This study describes the morphological development and early growth of laboratory-raised chub, Leuciscus cephalus (L. 1758), larvae. Larvae hatched with relatively large yolk sacs, stayed motionless at the tank bottom and exhibited short and sudden bursts from time to time. They were olive in colour and with complete absence of melanophores on the body. Larvae were transparent but showed brownish eye pigment. Intense body pigmentation first appeared on day 4 after hatching. By day 8 the yolk sac was fully absorbed; only 30% of the initial population of larvae successfully established exogenous feeding. Fin rays first appeared on the dorsal and anal fins of larvae around day 12. Growth during the yolk sac stage was initially fast but slowed down with the increasing size of larvae at the time of yolk absorption. The specific growth rate (SGR) of larvae declined with time, although the total observation period was relatively short (12 days). SGR values ranged from 5.18 (day 2) to 2.97 (day 12). Only a negligible egg mortality was observed during the period of early endogenous feeding (between days 1 and 6), and about 45% towards the end of endogenous feeding and immediately after the yolk sac phase (between days 7 and 9). During the exogenous feeding period (between days 10 and 12) deaths were negligible.

Embryonic and larval development of an Indian cyprinid fish, Barilius canarensis, is described from laboratory-reared specimens. The eggs, measuring 2.1–2.4 mm in diameter, were demersal, almost spherical in shape, transparent and unpigmented, with a pale yellow yolk without oil globules. Hatching occurred 39–45 h after fertilization at 26.8°–27.4°C. The newly hatched larvae, measuring 4.8–5.1 mm in body length (BL) with 22 + 17 = 39 myomeres, were characterized by melanophores already deposited on the eyes. The eggs of B. canarensis resembled those of the related danionin species Candidia barbatus, Opsariichthys uncirostris uncirostris, Zacco platypus, Z. sieboldii, and Z. temminckii. Although the larvae of B. canarensis were also similar to those of the foregoing species in general morphology, they differed in having a straight notochord tip and pigmentation on the eyes at hatching and the almost entire absence of melanophores on the ventral body surface from the yolk sac to postflexion larval stages. Conversely, melanophores occurred on the anterior abdominal and pericardial cavities from the preflexion to postflexion larval stages.

Morphological development, including that of fins, labyrinth organ, body proportions, and pigmentation, in laboratory-hatched larval and juvenile snakeskin gourami Trichogaster pectoralis is described. Body lengths (BL; mean ± SD) of larvae and juveniles were 2.3 ± 0.1 mm just after hatching (day 0) and 8.2 ± 0.6 mm on day 22, reaching 14.1 ± 2.3 mm on day 48. Aggregate fin ray numbers attained their full complements in juveniles >11.8 mm BL. Preflexion larvae started feeding on day 2 following upper and lower jaw formation, the yolk being completely absorbed by day 12. Subsequently, oblong conical teeth appeared in postflexion larvae >8.2 mm BL (day 16). Melanophores on the body increased with growth, with a large dark spot developing on the lateral midline at the caudal margin of the body in flexion larvae >6.1 mm BL. Subsequently, a broad vertical dark band from the eye to the caudal peduncle developed in postflexion larvae >8.9 mm BL. Proportions of head and pre-anal lengths became constant in postflexion larvae greater than ca. 9–10 mm BL, whereas those of maximum body depth, eye diameter, and snout length failed to stabilize in fish of the size examined in this study. First soft fin ray of the pelvic fin elongated, reaching over 40% BL. The labyrinth organ differentiated in postflexion larvae >7.4 mm BL (day 22). Comparisons of larval and juvenile morphology with another anabantoid species Anabas testudineus were also made, revealing several distinct differences, particularly in the numbers of myomeres and fin rays in the dorsal/anal fins, mouth location and body shape.

This study assessed the otolith (sagittae, lapilli, and asterisci) increment deposition rate in the range-shifting damselfish, A. vaigiensis, using different concentrations of Alizain Red S and evaluated the impact of staining on increment width. Daily increment deposition was verified in all otolith types and presented clearer fluorescent markings in the lapilli and sagittae than the asterisci, with high stain concentration showing the best clarity. Higher stain concentrations were found to decrease increment width, suggesting care is needed when using stained otoliths as a proxy for growth for this species.

Cod larvae from Irish Sea stocks were reared under differentgrowth conditions, and the otolith growth and increment formationexamined in sagittae and lapilli. Otolith increments were firstdeposited around the time of hatching and increment counts,on average, reflected larval age. The growth rate of fish larvaereared in different sized tanks was significantly different(P < 0.001), but there was no detectable effect on incrementformation. Otolith size was independent of larval size for individuals<5 mm in length. In larvae >6 mm, larger, faster growingindividuals had larger and faster growing otoliths.

Embryonic, larval, and juvenile development of an Indian cyprinid fish, Chela dadiburjori, is described from laboratory-reared specimens. The eggs, measuring 0.7–0.9mm in diameter, were demersal, almost spherical in shape, transparent and unpigmented, with a pale yellow yolk and no oil globule. Hatching occurred 50–61h after fertilization at ca. 27°C. The newly hatched larvae, measuring 2.4–2.6mm in body length (BL), had melanophores on the body with 14–16+14–17=29–31 myomeres. Two dark transverse bands on the ventral body surface and one melanophore on the lower margin of the eye in newly hatched larvae were diagnostic. Additionally, a cement organ for adhering to objects was present on the forehead of yolk sac larvae <3.1mm BL. The yolk was completely absorbed at 3.5mm BL. Notochord flexion was initiated at 5.0mm BL and finished at 6.0mm BL. Aggregate numbers of all fin rays were completed at 9.2mm BL. Squamation was initiated on the caudal peduncle at 8.0mm BL and completed at 10mm BL. The eggs of C. dadiburjori resembled those of the closely related species Devario malabaricus and Danio rerio. The larvae and juveniles of C. dadiburjori were also similar to those of the latter species in general morphology, especially the presence of body melanophores in newly hatched individuals and a distinctive lateral streak on the head during the period from yolk sac to postflexion larvae. However, early yolk sac larvae of C. dadiburjori were more similar to those of Devario malabaricus than Danio rerio in having a cement organ on the forehead. Larvae and juveniles of C. dadiburjori differed from those of the latter two species in pigmentation on the ventral body surface at hatching and around the mouth during the period from preflexion to early postflexion larvae and in having a dark lateral streak or band on the body in postflexion larvae and juveniles.

The cosmopolitan opah Lampris immaculatus (also known as the moonfish or mariposa) occurs commonly in New Zealand waters. The otoliths of 23 individuals were examined by light microscopy. All three of the otoliths of the endolymphatic sac of the opah have the characteristic appearance of the Stolkowski crystal form of the vaterite morph of calcium carbonate. Five randomly chosen pairs of asterici and sagittae and two lapilli otoliths were shown by X-ray diffraction to be composed of vaterite. In addition to their mineral composition, the sagitta and astericus of the opah present an unusual combination of anatomical features found in both what are generally regarded as primitive and as advanced fish. Vaterite otoliths also occur in the sunfish Mola mola and M. ramsayi, but with a different crystalline habit to that found in the opah, and in a distinctively different anatomical arrangement of the endolymphatic sac. It is argued that, based on their otolith mineralogy and morphology, the opah and the sunfish are each side of one of the biochemical and anatomical boundaries involved in the separation of the teleosts from other actinopterygian fish (sturgeons, paddle fish, gars and bowfins).

Embryonic, larval, and juvenile development of a small cyprinid species, Tanichthys albonubes, is described from laboratory-reared specimens. The eggs, measuring 1.0–1.2 mm in diameter, were demersal, almost spherical in shape, transparent and unpigmented, with a pale yolk without oil globules. Hatching occurred 45–53 h after fertilization at 25.5°–26.9°C. The newly hatched larvae, measuring 2.2–2.6 mm in body length (BL), had melanophores on the head and body. In particular, a dark vertical streak occurring posterior to the otic capsule and melanophores above the eyes were distinctive. The yolk was completely absorbed at 3.4 mm BL. Notochord flexion was initiated at 5.0 mm BL and finished at 6.0 mm BL. Aggregate numbers of all fin rays were completed at 11 mm BL. Squamation was initiated at 8.4 mm BL and completed at 13 mm BL. Although the eggs of T. albonubes resembled those of other small danionin species, including Aphyocypris chinensis, Chela dadiburjori, Danio rerio, Devario malabaricus, Gobiocypris rarus, Hemigrammocypris rasborella, and Horadandia atukorali, they differed from those of A. chinensis, C. dadiburjori, G. rarus, and Horadandia atukorali in having a wider perivitelline space. The larvae and juveniles of T. albonubes were similar to those of the aforementioned seven species plus Danio albolineatus, Danio kerri, and Devario sp. (cf. D. aequipinnatus) in general morphology. However, the early life stage morphology of T. albonubes differed from them in having a dark vertical streak posterior to the otic capsule and melanophores above the eyes in the yolk sac larval stage, and a dark lateral streak with an unpigmented area just above the former on the body, a dark blotch on the caudal fin, and reddish dorsal, anal, and caudal fins during the postflexion larval and juvenile stages.
