The solitary pupal parasitoid Diadromus pulchellus was released in 2010 as a classical biological control agent against leek moth, Acrolepiopsis assectella, an important new pest of onion crops, Allium spp. in Eastern North America. Post-release monitoring using sentinel leek moth pupae revealed that the facultative hyperparasitoid Conura albifrons was attacking leek moth and potentially D. pulchellus as well. We used laboratory choice and no-choice tests to assess the potential impact of C. albifrons on leek moth and D. pulchellus. C. albifrons is capable of developing in newly formed leek moth pupae and leek moth pupae containing first instar D. pulchellus, as well as in fully developed D. pulchellus pupae. Survivorship of both leek moth and D. pulchellus exposed to C. albifrons was significantly lower than that of unexposed controls. In choice trials, prior host experience significantly influenced host choice by C. albifrons. These results suggest that C. albifrons could impact the establishment of D. pulchellus through both competition and intraguild predation, and that the impact has the potential to change as the relative frequency of the two hosts shifts in field populations.  相似文献

The generation time of Lobesia botrana (Den. & Schiff.) was estimated as the number of day-degrees required between the start of a flight and the start of the following flight in two regions in northern Greece. The day-degrees required for the first generation ( x =339.3, Naoussa; x =275.6, Thessaloniki) were significantly shorter than for the second ( x =751.5, Naoussa; x =833.8, Thessaloniki) and the third generations ( x =899.5, Naoussa; x =1197.0, Thessaloniki). Nonlinear models were developed using trap catches of male L. botrana during 1987–1989 for predicting its flight activity. A lower threshold temperature of 6.45°C was used in calculating daily day-degrees from 1 March. The models predicted with sufficient accuracy the accumulated male moth catch and they accounted for the 60–78% and 86–91% of year-to-year variation in male flight activity in Thessaloniki and Naoussa, respectively.  相似文献

The egg and nymphal development, fecundity and survival of the green mirid, Creontiades dilutus were examined at a range of temperatures and a modified day-degree model fitted to the data. Day degree (DD) requirements for egg and nymphal development, and threshold temperatures were calculated from the fitted lines. Female fecundity and longevity, egg and nymphal development, and survival of C. dilutus were significantly influenced by temperature. Eggs and nymphs failed to complete development at temperatures below 17 and at 38°C. Females also failed to produce any eggs at 11 and 38°C. The optimum temperature range for female fecundity was found to be 26–32°C. The optimum temperature for the development of eggs was calculated from the model as 30.5°C and for nymphs as 31.5°C. The threshold temperature for development was 15.8°C for egg and 15.1°C for nymph; 69.4 and 156.7 DD were required for completing the egg and the nymphal development, respectively. At the optimum temperature, it was estimated that development from egg to adult took 15 days. Survival was highest at 26°C for eggs and at 30–32°C for nymphs.  相似文献

The susceptibility of larvae of the leek moth, Acrolepiopsis assectella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Acrolepiidae) to different concentrations of an autochthonous strain of Steinernema feltiae (Rhabditida: Steinernematidae) was examined in laboratory experiments using Petri dishes. The efficacy of this strain in pots and field experiments was also evaluated. High mortality (80%–100%) of leek moth larvae was observed when these larvae were exposed to low concentrations (3 × 103 to 1 × 104 IJs/m2) of S. feltiae under laboratory conditions. Foliar application of 30,000 IJs/leek in pot experiments caused a 98% reduction in leek moth larvae. Field experiments showed a 87.7% reduction of leek moth larvae with the nematode treatment, significantly higher than the 22% reduction with the Bacillus thuringiensis treatment. The efficacy of the treatments with S. feltiae in relation to the microhabitat of the leek moth larvae between the interfolded leaves of the leek is discussed.  相似文献

1. The hypothesis that a 3 °C elevation in temperature and doubled CO2 concentration would have no effect on the synchronization of winter moth egg hatch with budburst in oak was tested by comparing the separate and interactive effects of ambient and elevated (+ 3 °C) temperature and ambient and elevated (doubled to 340 p.p.m.) CO2 in eight experimental Solardomes. In addition, an outdoor control was compared with the ambient temperature/CO2 treatment combination.
2. Elevated temperature accelerated darkening (preceding egg hatch by about 5–10 days) and hatching of eggs developing off the trees; elevated CO2 had no effect. The same effects were observed in eggs developing on the trees.
3. Within treatments, date of egg hatch was the same on trees with early or late budburst.
4. Egg darkening and budburst were closely synchronized at both ambient and elevated temperatures.
5. Both eggs and trees required fewer cumulative heat units (day degrees > 4 °C), for hatching and budburst, respectively, at ambient than elevated temperatures. The requirements in the outdoor control treatment were similar to those in the ambient Solardome treatment.
6. Egg hatch between 10 and 25 °C, on a temperature gradient in the laboratory, required a constant number of heat units; fewer were required below 10 °C.
7. Elevated temperatures, in the Solardomes and the field, delayed adult emergence from the pupae.
8. The results suggest that a general increase in temperature with climatic change would not affect the closeness of the synchronization between egg hatch of winter moth and budburst of oak.  相似文献

The diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.), is the most important pest of brassicaceous crops worldwide. Since temperature is the major abiotic factor influencing insect development and thermal requirements may vary among insect populations, it is important to know the effect of temperature on development and survival of a subtropical strain of P. xylostella. Development and survival of the diamondback moth was evaluated under seven constant temperatures ranging from 10°C to 35°C. Development was completed between 10°C and 32.5°C, but at 35°C all individuals died in the larval stage. Data were fitted to one linear and five nonlinear models. Considering as criteria the goodness of fit and the ability to estimate parameters of biological significance, the models Briere-1 and Briere-2 were the most adequate to describe the relationship between temperature and development of P. xylostella. The linear model demonstrated that P. xylostella required 312.5 degree-days above a lower threshold of 6.3°C to complete development. The degree-day model showed that the number of diamondback moth generations in the tropical region of Brazil is nearly twice the number in the subtropical region of the country. This result explains, at least in part, the higher population levels of this species in the tropical region of Brazil, and also demonstrates that P. xylostella is tolerant to a wide range of temperatures (6.1-32.5°C). Therefore, temperature cannot be considered a limiting factor for the occurrence of diamondback moth throughout the year in most regions of Brazil.  相似文献

A demographic study of the Nile crocodile Crocodylus niloticus at Lake Ngezi, Zimbabwe, revealed that females predominated in all size classes and among embryos. The sex of C. niloticus was shown to be determined by the temperature of egg incubation in constant temperature laboratory experiments. At 31 °C and below only females were produced. The threshold temperature for maleness was between 31 ° and 34 °C, but appeared to vary between clutches. The duration of the incubation period varied with temperature and was 110 days at 28 °C, falling to 85 days at 34 °C. Incubation temperature affected hatchling length, but not mass. Hatchlings from incubation at 34 °C were shorter on average than those from incubation at 28 °C and 31 °C, but by three months had outgrown them. There was no sex-related difference in length in a random sample of 200 two-year-old C. niloticus on a crocodile farm. Mean temperatures in wild nests were consistently lower than 31 °C and therefore the male threshold as determined in the laboratory. Embryonic development was slow and hatching success poor. The shallowest eggs in a nest had higher mean temperatures and more advanced embryos than the deepest eggs. They also experienced daily temperature fluctuations of up to 10 °C during which the maximum occasionally rose to 35 °C. Constant temperature incubation was not a good model of field conditions, but the correlation between nest temperatures and embryonic sex is consistent with temperature-dependent sex determination in the wild.  相似文献

Euplectrus melanocephalus is a gregarious, primary ectoparasitoid of larvae of the fruit-piercing moth genus Eudocima Billberg (Noctuidae: Catocalinae). In northern Queensland, E. melanocephalus parasitised second- and third-instar larvae of Eud. aurantia (Moore), Eud. cocalus (Cramer) , Eud. fullonia (Clerck), Eud. iridescens (Lucas), Eud. jordani (Holland) and Eud. materna (L.). In the laboratory, E. melanocephalus also parasitised Eud. salaminia (Cramer) but failed to oviposit on larvae of two other noctuids, Erebus terminitincta (Gaede) (Catocalinae) and Spodoptera litura (F.) (Amphipyrinae). When parasitising Eud. materna , eggs of E. melanocephalus were deposited dorsolaterally on one of the first five abdominal segments of second- and third-instar larvae. Fourth instars were occasionally parasitised when the density of parasitoids was increased, but successful development to adults was markedly reduced. Pupation took place between the leaf substrate and host. Female parasitoids provided with honey survived 21 days (range = 1–42) and deposited 112 eggs (range = 11–196), while development from egg to adult occupied 12–13 days at 25°C. The minimum temperature threshold for oviposition was 17.5°C, while minimum and maximum development thresholds for larvae were 18.5°C and 30°C, respectively. Studies on the parasitoid/host interactions of E. melanocephalus indicate that it is adapted principally to the larvae of Eudocima spp.  相似文献

Tomicus piniperda is the first bark beetle to swarm in the spring in Fennoscandia. The intensity of swarming is directly related to air temperature above a certain threshold and reaches 100% asymptotically. While temperature sums above the threshold accumulate, swarming rate slows down. A non-linear model was built on these considerations. The model was calibrated to window trap material from northern Finland, and it was validated against published material mainly from Norway. The threshold temperatures in these materials were 10.8°C and 11.6°C, respectively. The predictions of the model were satisfactory, and the model will be tried as a part of an entire population dynamics model. The possibilities to predict not only timing, but also the frequency of attack are discussed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The interaction of photoperiod and temperature in the regulation of the induction and termination of the larval diapause of the Southwestern corn borer, Diatraea grandiosella Dyar (Lepidoptera), was examined. A population originating from south-eastern Missouri had critical daylengths for diapause induction of about 15h 5min (ecological threshold) and llh (physiological threshold). The ecological threshold was more stable than was the physiological threshold at temperatures lower than 25°C. Above 25°C the diapause response was suppressed. The insect appears to measure photoperiods in a stationary manner since a stepwise increase or decrease in photoperiod did not affect the incidence of diapause. In the critical region of the photoperiodic response curve, a higher incidence of diapause was found among females than among males. Females entered diapause later than did males, but resumed active development earlier than males. The rate of diapause development was more temperature dependent than was the rate of diapause induction, yet it was also clearly under photoperiodic control. The temperature coefficient (Q10) for this process was about 4. Several other factors including sex-linkage, age, and geographic adaptations are involved in controlling the rate of diapause development, even more so than they are in controlling diapause induction. In the laboratory, the intensity of diapause declined gradually without larvae being exposed to non-diapause inducing conditions. Incubation of field-collected larvae revealed that their sensitivity to diapause maintaining photoperiods had ended by January. Three generations of selection of a Mississippi population of D. grandiosella at 30°C and LD 12:12 led to the production of an essentially diapause-free strain and a diapause strain.  相似文献

The potential of trap cropping as a pest control strategy was explored for two specialist moth species, where oviposition behaviour determines larval distribution. Oviposition behaviour was studied at three different scales: Individual plants in the laboratory, small scale field experiments with and without cages, and medium scale field trials. The study insects were the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), a specialist on Brassica species and the leek moth, Acrolepiopsis assectella (Z.) (Lepidoptera: Acrolepiidae), a specialist on Allium species. The diamondback moth preferred Indian mustard, Brassica juncea (L.) over white cabbage, B. oleracea var alba (L.). The leek moth did not show preference when offered leek, Allium porrum (L.) and chives, A. schoenoprasum (L.). However, the leek moth did prefer to oviposit on plants of a larger biomass over smaller plants. In both the small scale and the medium scale field studies the trap crops reduced the number of eggs laid on the primary crop. The total number of eggs laid in the monoculture and the trap crop treatments were the same in the small scale field cage study, but the females distributed their eggs differently. More eggs were laid on trap crops compared with primary crops and this pattern was also validated in the medium scale field trials. In this study only the direct effects of trap cropping were considered. Indirect effects of vegetation diversity such as enhancement of natural enemies could potentially increase the efficacy of trap cropping.  相似文献

Abstract:  The leek moth, Acrolepiopsis assectella (Zell.), is a recently discovered exotic species in eastern Ontario and western Quebec. This Allium spp. (Asparagales, Alliaceae) specialist can cause up to 40% crop damage. A no-choice experiment was used to determine the relationship between oviposition behaviour and larval survival of the leek moth as the phylogenetic distance from the preferred host Allium ampeloprasum var. porrum L. increased. Results indicate that oviposition preference and larval survival of the leek moth declined as the phylogenetic distance from the preferred host increased. These results support the conclusion that the leek moth is a specialist feeder on closely related Allium spp. although the strength of this preference may decline as the motivation to oviposit increases. This may indicate that the leek moth is able to use closely related novel hosts as temporary refuges if the preferred host plant is unavailable.  相似文献

The influence of temperature on life-table parameters, fecundity and survivorship of the predatory ladybird, Stethorus gilvifrons , fed on Tetranychus urticae was determined at seven constant temperatures of 15°C, 20°C, 25°C, 28°C, 30°C, 35°C and 40°C. No development was observed at 40°C, thus being regarded as the threshold for the development of S. gilvifrons . The results indicate a significant decrease in male and female longevity with increasing temperature from 15°C to 35°C. The longest and shortest longevity were 18.40 and 12.75 days for males and 17.40 and 8.80 days for females, respectively. The intrinsic rate of natural increase ( r m ) and the net reproductive rate ( R 0) of S. gilvifrons linearly increased with increasing temperatures from 15°C to 35°C, while the mean generation time ( T ) and doubling time (DT) decreased linearly within this temperature range. The highest values of r m (0.240 females/female/day) and R 0 (59.27 females/female) and the lowest mean generation time (17.01 days) and DT (2.88 days) were recorded at 35°C. The maximum (185.50 eggs) and minimum (25.50 eggs) measurement of total fecundity was also recorded at 35°C and 15°C, respectively. The results indicate that temperature greatly affected fecundity, survivorship and life-table parameters of S. gilvifrons , and that 35°C is a suitable temperature for population growth of this predator.  相似文献

The developmental time, survival and reproduction of the cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover (Hom., Aphididae), were evaluated on detached cotton leaves at five constant and two alternating temperatures (15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 25/30, and 30/35°C). The developmental periods of the immature stages ranged from 12.0 days at 15°C to 4.5 days at 30°C. A constant temperature of 35°C was lethal to the immature stages of A. gossypii. The lower developmental threshold for the cotton aphid was estimated at 6.2°C and it required 108.9 degree-days for a first instar to become adult. The average longevity of adult females was reduced from 39.7 days at 15°C to 12.6 days at 30/35°C. The average reproduction rate per female was 51.5 at 25/30°C and 20.9 at 30/35°C. Mean generation time of the population ranged from 10.4 days at 30°C to 24.5 days at 15°C. The largest per capita growth rate ( r m = 0.413) occurred at 30°C, the smallest at 15°C ( r m = 0.177). It was evident that temperatures over 30°C prolonged development, increased the mortality of the immature stages, shortened adult longevity, and reduced fecundity. The optimal range of temperature for population growth of A. gossypii on cotton was 25/30–30°C.  相似文献

Reproduction and population parameters of vegetable leafminer, Liriomyza sativae Blanchard were measured on cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) at seven constant temperatures (10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40℃). No eggs were found at 10℃ and flies died after exposure to 40℃. The significantly highest intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm), net reproductive rate (R0) and finite rate of increase (λ) ofL. sativae were obtained at 25℃ as 0.196, 52.452, and 1.216, respectively. The above-mentioned parameters decreased at 15℃ and 135℃ and this reduction at 35℃ was strong. Doubling time (DT) varied significantly with temperature. The shortest doubling time was obtained at 25℃. Mean generation time (T) decreased significantly with increasing temperature between 15℃ and 35℃. Percentage of immature ages in the stable age distribution was more than 95% at all temperatures. Female longevity was greater than male at all temperatures. Liriomyza sativae lived for a long time at 15℃, whereas at 35℃ had lower survival rates. The effect of temperature on reproduction, especially the intrinsic rate of increase of L. sativae would be useful for predicting its longterm population fluctuation over several generations.  相似文献

Abstract This study investigated the effect of temperature on the development and winter survival of the predatory mirid Macrolophus caliginosus Wagner, recently introduced into the U.K. as a biocontrol agent for glasshouse whitefly Trialeurodes vaporariorum . The developmental threshold for M. caliginosus calculated by three methods was between 7.3 and 8.4 °C, with a day-degree requirement per generation varying between 472 and 524 day-degrees. It was estimated that under outdoor conditions M. caliginosus could complete two generations per year in the U.K. All life stages of M. caliginosus had supercooling points around −20 °C, with some pre-freeze mortality evident in both acute and chronic low temperature exposures. Acclimation increased survival of nymphal M. caliginosus from approximately 24–52 days when exposed to a constant 0 °C. Provision of prey extended survival of nymphs in the laboratory at a constant 5 °C from 39 to 64 days and in the field by c . 150 days. The results are discussed in the context of the occurrence and establishment of M. caliginosus in the U.K. and the need to develop a reliable risk assessment system for non-native species used in glasshouse biocontrol.  相似文献

House mice bred for many generations in two environments   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Wild house mice, Mus musculus L., were trapped, and their descendants reared, in permanently mated pairs, for a number of generations in two laboratory environments, at about 21°C (controls) and -3°C, respectively. All mice had sawdust and cottonwool for bedding; but the nests of those at -3°C were colder than those in the warm, and fluctuated greatly in temperature.
Reproductive performance was inferior in the cold environment: more pairs were barren, and the fecund pairs reared fewer young than the controls. Yet litters at birth were usually larger in the cold, and the young at three weeks were always heavier. Over ten generations nestling mortality declined at -3°C.
From generation 1 on, adult mice at -3°C were heavier than the controls, but there was no corresponding increase in body length. Tails were much shorter relative to body length in the first generations in the cold, but returned to control proportions by generation 10. Most of the structural changes in the cold accord with the "rules" of Bergmann and Allen.
The incidence of abnormal sixth lumbar vertebrae was low in all generations at both temperatures.
After nine generations, some mice were transferred from the cold to the warm environment, and bred for a further three generations. There they outstripped the controls both in reproductive performance and in growth. They also had more fat, and a heavier and longer small intestine; but the heart, stomach and kidneys were lighter than those of the controls. Adrenal weights at 21°C declined over the generations, but those of the mice at -3°C did not.
The secular changes observed, especially those in the cold environment, are attributed principally to differential selection of genotypes, not to inbreeding; but maternal effects may also have been involved.  相似文献
