Vegetation zonation in dune slacks on the Leba Bar,Polish Baltic Sea coast

Vegetation zones in dune slacks on the Leba Bar on the Polish Baltic Sea coast are described. Plant colonization starts on moist sand in eastern ends of slacks, in the wake of receding mobile dunes. Communities on deflation ribs, dominated by psammophytic grasses, sedges and lichens, are structurally simple. Communities in troughs, dominated by species of fresh habitats, become structurally more complex in a western direction and they culminate with the Pinus silvestris forest. The main lines of vegetation variation correlate with groundwa-ter depth, micro topography, soil profile build-up and substrate acidification.

The effect of largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides on aquatic macro-invertebrate communities in the Wit River,Eastern Cape,South Africa

Fish predation is one of the driving forces of freshwater invertebrate community structures, with alien predators having a pronounced effect. A quantitative assessment of aquatic invertebrates in the Wit River, Sundays River catchment, Eastern Cape, South Africa, was undertaken to assess the impact of the alien fish Micropterus salmoides on their relative abundance and community structure. Communities in the stones-in-current and marginal vegetation biotopes were sampled in the presence and absence of M. salmoides in late summer (February–April) 2008. Results suggest that the presence of M. salmoides does have an impact on indigenous macroinvertebrate fauna and communities. Community structure in the stones-in-current biotopes did not differ significantly between sections of the river with or without fish. However, there was a significant difference in community structure in marginal vegetation between sections of river. In sections with M. salmoides several large or conspicuous taxa (Odonata, Hemiptera and Coleoptera) were significantly reduced (p < 0.05) or even absent, while cryptic/inconspicuous taxa (Trichoptera, Leptoceridae and Mollusca, Physidae) were significantly more abundant (p < 0.05).     

Length–weight relationship of Rastrelliger brachysoma (Bleeker, 1851) and Rastrelliger faughni Matsui, 1967 from the Andaman Islands,India

This study reports the length–weight relationships (LWRs) of Rastrelliger brachysoma (Bleeker, 1851) and Rastrelliger faughni Matsui, 1967 from Andaman Islands, India. Sample sizes for the two fish species were 78 for R. brachysoma and 57 for R. faughni. Fish collected monthly from Junglighat fish landing center. Fish were captured by commercial ring seine units (mesh size ranging from 2 to 4 cm) between February 2016 and March 2017. LWRs were established as TW = 0.0042TL^3.332 (r² = .989) for R. brachysoma and TW = 0.0096TL^3.022 (r² = .980) for R. faughni.

Effects on soil,microclimate and vegetation of the native-invasive <Emphasis Type="Italic">Retama monosperma</Emphasis> (L.) in coastal dunes

The aim of this study was to analyse and quantify the effects of the canopy of the native-invasive N-fixer woody shrub Retama monosperma in the dune ecosystem, affecting the structure and function of the dune environment as well as plant community, in the context of the facilitation mechanism. Air temperature and relative humidity; soil pH, electric conductivity, organic matter (OM) and nutrient content; above and below-ground vegetation biomass, litter mass, species richness and Shannon diversity were determined and compared from sampling plots below the R. monosperma canopy and in canopy gaps within a coastal dune system in SW Spain. The relationships between soil OM and nutrient contents and above and below-ground vegetation biomass, litter mass, species richness and Shannon diversity were also assessed. A predominance of positive interactions was confirmed. The canopy of R. monosperma ameliorated temperature extremes beneath, and soil OM and nutrient concentrations were increased by 188–466%, compared to those found in gaps. Plant biomass increased by 442% beneath the canopy and was composed almost exclusively of herbaceous annuals. Plant diversity was not affected. Plant communities were clearly structured as fertility islands, distributed in an environmentally stressful dune matrix characterized by scarce vegetation cover and low biomass.
