A study of populations of Eucalyptus viminalis found on both acid and alkaline soils showed that seedlings differ in their tolerance of calcareous soils and their susceptibility to lime chlorosis. Seedlings from an open-forest population on calcareous dunes in the Otway Ranges, Victoria, averaged a significantly greater yield than seedlings of three other populations found on acid soils when all were grown on calcareous soil of pH 6.8. A tall ribbon gum form of E. viminalis, from Paradise gully in the Otways, was the least tolerant of alkaline conditions and showed severe signs of chlorosis and reddening of leaf margins. The latter appeared to be related to high uptake of phosphorus. This population showed rapid growth on a fertile acid loam. The data presented also emphasize the need to consider the variation in soils which can occur at any one site. Population differences were most marked when seedlings were grown on soils of pH near 7.0. Yield was reduced in the Otways calcareous population when seedlings were grown on the more leached soil from swales (pH 6.5) between dunes and on the highly calcareous soil from the dune crests (pH 7.8–8.0). The failure of any of the populations of E. viminalis studied to grow well on soils of high pH suggest that this species is not tolerant of highly calcareous soils. This may in part explain the absence of this species from the drier calcareous areas on the Mornington Peninsula and the Yanakie Isthmus, Victoria. Since seedlings had reduced root development on the soil collected from the Peninsula, E. viminalis may be restricted, in effect because of drought stress, to non-calcareous sites in the eastern part of Victoria.  相似文献

 The present study was carried out to elucidate the response mechanisms of 50-year-old Pinus halepensis Mill. trees to a long-term and severe drought. The amount of water available to trees was artificially restricted for 12 months by covering the soil with a plastic roof. Over the short term a direct and rapid impact of drought was evident on the water relations and gas exchanges of trees: as the soil dried out in the Spring, there was a concurrent decrease of predawn water potential; transpiration was strongly reduced by stomatal closure. Seasonal changes in the water volume fractions of twig and stem xylem were observed and interpreted as the result of cavitation and refilling in the xylem. When droughted trees recovered to a more favourable water status, refilling of embolized xylem was observed; twig predawn water potentials were still negative in the period when the embolism was reversed in the twig xylem. A few months after the removal of the covering, no differences in whole plant hydraulic resistance were observed between droughted and control trees. Needle and shoot elongation and stem radial growth were considerably reduced in droughted trees; no strategy of trees to allocate carbon preferentially to the stem conducting tissues was apparent throughout the experiment. Fate ofDigitaria adscendens andEleusine indica seedlings under field conditions and their responses to salt spray, drought and nutrients were experimentally investigated in order to evaluate the possible mechanisms controlling the different distributions of the two species in coastal sand dune areas. Salt spray produced no apparent positive effect on the growth or survival of both species. Seeds of each species germinated well in the field, although 80% ofE. indica seedlings died during a summer drought and surviving seedlings neither grew nor bore fruit. The mortality ofD. adscendens seedlings due to the drought was less than 10% and the survivors mostly bore fruit by the end of the growth season. No major difference in the sublethal water saturation deficit was noticed between the two species. However,D. adscendens individuals extended their roots into the deep sandy soil to a much greater extent in water-stressed conditions than in well watered conditions, whereasE. indica showed no such behavior. Additional watering in a dune environment did not help the growth ofE. indica seedlings, but additional nutrients had a markedly stimulatory effect.D. adscendens maintained its growth and fruition with much smaller amounts of nutrients thanE. indica. Soil nitrogen content at a site whereE. indica andD. adscendens were distributed sympatrically was higher than that at a site where onlyD. adscendens was present. Based on these findings, it is proposed thatE. indica seedlings are unable to become established because of their lower resistance to summer drought and the poor nutrient conditions present in a coastal rear sand dune habitat. Changes in the cover and density of shrubs and trees were assessed from aerial photographs (1940, 1974 and 1998) as well as from fixed-point photographs taken in 1984 and 1996 in the Kruger National Park, South Africa. Woody cover (trees and shrubs combined) increased by 12% on granite substrates but decreased by 64% on basalt substrates over the past 58 years. Both these figures are expressed in terms of the initial values, respectively. The density of the large tree component of woody vegetation decreased on both substrates. Woody vegetation cover declined as fire return periods became shorter, but the relationship was weak. The increases in woody plant density and cover on granite are thought to be the result of decreased competition from grasses, which in turn is a result of overgrazing by wild herbivores whose numbers have been kept high through the provision of surface water. These effects were not seen on the relatively nutrient-rich basalts, where grasses can recover rapidly even after heavy grazing. The decline in overall woody cover on basalts is interpreted as a result of regular, short-interval prescribed burning over the past 40 years, while the universal decline in large trees seems to result from an interaction between regular, frequent fires and utilization by elephants. A Salix viminalis/gravel system based on hydroponics was developed for wastewater renovation in order to avoid the problems of soil damage and pollution associated with long-term application of wastewater to soil. For such a system to work the mineral elements applied must match closely the requirements of the tree species. To examine this the growth and nutrient uptake of S. viminalis in wastewater was compared with that in Long Ashton nutrient solution (1/4 strength). S. viminalis grew more slowly in wastewater than in Long Ashton solution, but exhibited no obvious deficiency or toxicity symptoms. Since industrial wastewaters often contain metals, the extent to which copper might inhibit wastewater treatment in this system was also examined. S. viminalis was grown in wastewater amended with 10 and 100 ppm copper. Trees were unaffected by wastewater with 10 ppm copper when compared to trees grown in wastewater alone. Wastewater containing with 100 ppm copper was too toxic for the trees to thrive and wastewater treatment was reduced. Treatment efficiencies for unamended wastewater were 57.7% for nitrogen, 90.6% for phosphorus and 24.9% for potassium. These efficiencies are much greater than those quoted for a Salix/soil system, and thus Salix/gravel systems may have potential for wastewater treatment in environmentally sensitive areas or situations.  相似文献

We investigated the ectomycorrhizal communities on the roots of adult trees and seedlings associated with three Norway spruce stands in the Czech Republic using morphological and molecular tools. The stands had different degrees of forest decline due to air pollution. The aims of the study were to obtain information about the belowground ectomycorrhizal community in a heavily damaged spruce forest and to assess whether missing ectomycorrhizal fungal partners could be one of the reasons for the observed lack of regeneration. The ectomycorrhizal species richness on the roots of adult trees was significantly lower in the heavily damaged site Mumlavska hora than in the other two, but less drastically so than that found in a fruitbody survey. The roots of adult trees and seedlings were fully mycorrhizal at this site although they were less species-rich. The most abundant ectomycorrhizal species on the root system of adult trees in all three forest stands was Tylospora fibrillosa, a member of the athelioid clade. It made up over 60% of root tips in Mumlavska hora and its proportion was at least twice that in the other two sites. This species was also an efficient colonizer of roots from seedlings, in particular, in the most damaged site. The different soil properties in this site may have caused the observed differences in the ectomycorrhizal species richness and composition. For example, cation exchange capacity and soil base saturation were lower and the soil more often saturated. However, the number of living trees and their defoliation status may well directly impact the ectomycorrhizal species composition by presumably affecting the amount of carbon delivered to the symbiotic fungal partners. Athelioids and thelephoroids are an important component of the belowground ectomycorrhizal community in most temperate and boreal forests, but the role they play might even be more crucial in stressed forest ecosystems. Based on our results, we suggest that factors other than missing ectomycorrhizal inoculum constrain natural regeneration in the heavily damaged site Mumlavska hora.  相似文献

Canopy dieback of Eucalyptus blakelyi trees is often associated with defoliation by insects: the foliage of trees with dieback is nutritionally superior for insects and is more heavily damaged by them. I investigated whether differences in the nutritional quality of foliage were genetically determined, or caused by environmental stress. In a series of glasshouse experiments, with seedlings and grafted plants derived from dieback and healthy populations of trees. I tested the influence of deprivation of nutrients, drought, waterlogging, saline waterlogging and addition of excess phosphate, on the nutritional quality of foliage. Differences in the foliar properties of plants from different genetic sources were not consistent with the differences between the source populations. Most of the environmental stresses applied caused a reduction in foliar quality (decreased water and nitrogen contents, and increased specific leaf weights). I hypothesize that the enhanced nutritional quality of the foliage of dieback trees is more likely to be a consequence of benign growing conditions (e.g. improved soil fertility) than of environmental stress. Field data for soil properties and the effect of drought on mature trees are consistent with this view.  相似文献

为了解长白山地不同地貌类型典型农田生态系统土壤跳虫群落结构及其分布,探讨不同地貌类型对土壤跳虫群落结构和分布及其季节动态的影响,于2015年春季(5月)、夏季(7月)、秋季(9月)分别对长白山地玄武岩台地、花岗岩低山、花岗岩丘陵三种地貌类型玉米田土壤跳虫进行了研究。研究表明,3个生境共获土壤跳虫881头,隶属10科16属22种。其中,玄武岩台地土壤跳虫个体密度是1 760头/m~2,17种;花岗岩低山个体密度是2 206.67头/m~2,13种;花岗岩丘陵个体密度是1 906.67头/m~2,18种。地貌及取样时间的差异对土壤跳虫个体密度、物种数、多样性指数均有一定的影响。花岗岩低山与花岗岩丘陵的个体密度和物种数大小为秋季春季夏季,而玄武岩台地的个体密度和物种数表现出随季节变化呈递增的趋势(P0.05)。不同地貌土壤跳虫多样性均在秋季达到最大,夏季玄武岩台地多样性指数显著高于花岗岩低山和花岗岩丘陵,秋季,玄武岩台地丰富度指数和均匀度指数显著高于花岗岩低山,玄武岩台地优势度指数显著低于花岗岩低山(P0.05)。不同土壤环境因子对跳虫的影响不同,土壤温湿度、有机质、全氮、速效氮和全磷与土壤跳虫的群落结构、生态分布有明显的相关性。综上可知,长白山地农田生态系统土壤跳虫群落结构和生态分布因地貌类型不同而存在差异,季节变化也对其影响明显。  相似文献

The response of three eucalypt species (Eucalyptus pulchella, Eucalyptus coccifera and Eucalyptus delegatensis) to a severe drought in the summer of 1982/83 was examined at Snug Plains, south-eastern Tasmania. Few large differences in leaf water potential (Ψl) or stomatal conductance (gs) were apparent even at the height of the drought when both Ψl and soil water potentials (Ψs) reached ca. — 4.5 MPa. However, E. pulchella maintained a higher relative water content (RWC) in its leaves than E. coccifera and E. delegatensis, and showed less severe crown damage. After the first light rains substantial interspecific differences in Ψl and gs occurred. Eucalyptus pulchella restored normal Ψl, gs and RWC more rapidly than the other two species and, even for severely droughted trees, crown growth commenced via epicormic buds near the ends of its branches while for E. delegatensis and E. coccifera crown regeneration was via epicormic buds arising from stems and larger branches. This resulted in a change in dominance in certain stands and showed that E. pulchella was more drought-resistant than E. coccifera, which was in turn more resistant than E. delegatensis. This conclusion was confirmed during competition experiments using potted seedlings. However, potted seedlings differed from mature field trees by maintaining moderate gs at high vapour pressure deficits and closing stomata at Ψl below ca. — 2.0 MPa. Substantial variation in the severity of drought symptoms was observed over short distances. This variation appeared to be determined by the moisture-holding capacity of the soil and the biomass of the stand. Although differences in the rooting patterns of seedlings were evident, field measurements of Ψl and Ψs suggested that all three species were exploiting the same water resource. In contrast to previous studies, the results suggest that large interspecific differences in tissue hydration and crown damage may be present, even though differences in Ψl, gs and characteristics of the root system may appear small.  相似文献

We investigated scaling of physiological parameters between age classes of Quercus rubra by combining in situ field measurements with an experimental approach. In the in situ field study, we investigated changes in drought response with age in seedlings, juveniles, and mature trees of Q. rubra. Throughout the particularly dry summer of 1995 and the unusually wet summer of 1996 in New England, we measured water potential of leaves (ΨLeaf) and gas exchange of plants at three sites at the Harvard Forest in Petersham, Massachusetts. In order to determine what fraction of the measured differences in gas exchange between seedlings and mature trees was due to environment versus ontogeny, an experiment was conducted in which seedlings were grown under light and soil moisture regimes simulating the environment of mature trees. The photosynthetic capacity of mature trees was three-fold greater than that of seedlings during the wet year, and six-fold greater during the drought year. The seedling experiment demonstrated that the difference in photosynthetic capacity between seedlings and mature trees is comprised equally of an environmental component (50%) and an ontogenetic component (50%) in the absence of water limitation. Photosynthesis was depressed more severely in seedlings than in mature trees in the drought year relative to the wet year, while juveniles showed an intermediate response. Throughout the drought, the predawn leaf water potential (ΨPD) of seedlings became increasingly negative (–0.4 to –1.6 MPa), while that of mature trees became only slightly more negative (–0.2 to –0.5 MPa). Again, juveniles showed an intermediate response (–0.25 to –0.8 MPa). During the wet summer of 1996, however, there was no difference in ΨPD between seedlings, juveniles and mature trees. During the dry summer of 1995, seedlings were more responsive to a major rain event than mature trees in terms of ΨLeaf , suggesting that the two age classes depend on different water sources. In all age classes, instantaneous measurements of intrinsic water use efficiency (WUEi), defined as C assimilation rate divided by stomatal conductance, increased as the drought progressed, and all age classes had higher WUEi during the drought year than in the wet year. Mature trees, however, showed a greater ability to increase their WUEi in response to drought. Integrated measurements of WUE from C isotope discrimination (Δ) of leaves indicated higher WUE in mature trees than juveniles and seedlings. Differences between years, however, could not be distinguished, probably due to the strong bias in C isotope fractionation at the time of leaf production, which occurred prior to the onset of drought conditions in 1995. This publication is an extension of the 1956 review of drought resistance in woody plants. The more important recently used terms are listed and defined. Summaries of reports of drought effects on forest trees are presented in tabular form. Frost-drought is discussed as an important factor in the limitation of woody plants’ geographical ranges. The role that droughts play in the initiation of tree diseases is considered, especially in the light of new evidence from studies of diebacks-declines of forest trees. Interactions between soil moisture and transpiration are discussed as well as ways to control transpiration in large stands. Also considered are drought experiments with tree seedlings and symptomatology of drought injury. The means by which woody plants survive drought (excluding ephemerals) are discussed.  相似文献

采用盆栽试验在适宜水分、中度干旱和重度干旱(土壤田间持水量的70%-75%、45%-50%和30%-35%)条件下,研究了4种沙生灌木柠条、花棒、沙木蓼和杨柴1年生幼苗的光合光响应特性。结果表明:各灌木光响应曲线的变化趋势基本一致,采用非直角双曲线模型拟合良好;各灌木净光合速率在同等光合有效辐射时均表现为适宜水分中度干旱重度干旱;各灌木在干旱条件下叶片表观量子效率与最大净光合速率均较适宜水分下降低,两项参数在中度与重度干旱下的平均降幅柠条均为最小,反映出柠条光合作用对干旱胁迫较强的适应性;干旱条件下光饱和点的降低是造成4种沙生灌木对光照需求改变的主要原因,光补偿点和饱和点的协同变化表明柠条具有对光环境良好的适应性;4种沙生灌木在干旱条件下暗呼吸速率均降低。在西北沙区人工植被建设中从光合特性考虑,柠条更宜作为土壤水分较差立地上的先锋树种。  相似文献

Current climate models predict a shift to warmer, drier conditions in the southwestern US. While major shifts in plant distribution are expected to follow these climate changes, interactions among species and intraspecific genetic variation rarely have been incorporated into models of future plant distributions. We examined the drought‐related mortality of pinyon pine (Pinus edulis) in northern Arizona focusing on trees that showed genetically‐based resistance or susceptibility to a nonlethal herbivore, the shoot‐boring moth, Dioryctria albovittella. Because moth resistant trees have outperformed susceptible trees during 20 years of study, and herbivory has been shown to increase drought related mortality, we expected higher mortality rates in susceptible trees. However, our field observations and greenhouse experiments showed several unexpected patterns relevant to understanding the consequences of climate change: (1) The mortality of adult P. edulis resistant to the moth was three times higher than the mortality of trees susceptible to the moth. (2) Over a few years, differential mortality caused a shift in stand structure from resistant dominated to equality (3 : 1 resistant : susceptible to 1 : 1). (3) Adult moth resistant trees suffered significantly greater water stress than adult moth susceptible trees, suggesting that variation among the two groups in drought tolerance may be a mechanism for differential mortality. (4) When grown under drought conditions in the greenhouse, seedlings from resistant mothers died sooner than seedlings from susceptible mothers. These data support the hypothesis that drought can act as an agent of balancing selection and that drought resistance is a heritable trait. Taken together, our findings suggest that genetic variation in a population can be an important factor in determining its response to future climate change, and argue for the inclusion of genetics into models developed to understand the consequences of climate change.  相似文献

香果树为我国Ⅱ级野生保护植物,由于原生境中香果树种群的数量迅速减少,目前已濒临灭绝,种群亟待恢复。研究了武夷山不同海拔的香果树种群种子雨、种子库及其幼苗存活现状,目的是阐明不同海拔地区的香果树种群自然更新的动态过程,寻找其更新脆弱的环节及其影响因素,为香果树自然种群的恢复提供理论依据。以分布于不同海拔高度(819、980、1 140及1 301 m)的香果树母树为中心,在其周围(东、南、西、北四个方位)布设种子雨收集框和土壤种子库样方,连续观测种子雨和种子库的动态,并对不同地表覆盖物中种子萌发及幼苗数量进行观测和记录。结果表明,武夷山香果树种群种子雨持续时间近2个月,尤其是11月底至12月中旬为种子雨高峰期;随着海拔的上升,香果树种子总密度以及虫蛀种子密度均显著降低,但千粒重以及饱满种子密度则有所增加;香果树土壤种子库为瞬时种子库,其水平分布以母树南侧和西侧种子密度较大,母树北侧种子密度最小。香果树种子的垂直分布主要集中于枯落物和苔藓层;3月时香果树土壤种子库中存留的饱满种子仅占种子散布后1.80%,而1年实生苗存活率为6.18%,土壤种子库的损耗是其种群自然更新困难的主要原因;不同地表覆盖物对香果树幼苗的存活产生显著影响,枯落物及苔藓层的幼苗死亡率显著高于土壤表面。建议清理林内枯落物及苔藓,增加林内裸露土壤的面积,减小地上草本的盖度,以减少种子霉烂、虫蛀的几率,增加香果树实生苗胚根与土壤接触的几率以及改善光照条件,促进香果树自然更新。  相似文献

Monoclonal antibodies were raised against Frankia 0RS020607, a strain isolated originally by H.G. Diem from nodules of Casuarina equisetifolia from Senegal. One of these antibodies, mAb8C5, was shown by ELISA to have high, but not absolute specificity for 0RS020607. This antibody was employed to investigate the mobility and persistence of 0RS020607 in plantations of C. equisetifolia. Seedlings were inoculated in pots of sand in a forest nursery with 0RS020607, with local crushed nodule suspensions or were left uninoculated. They were planted out after 5 months in experimental plots on a moderately fertile black soil site and on a low organic, oxidised red soil site. Compared with crushed nodule inoculated seedlings or uninoculated controls, growth of seedlings at transplant was improved by inoculation with Frankia 0RS020607. However, 4 years after transplant to experimental plots, the growth of trees receiving different treatments was similar. The possibility that movement of ORS 020607 between treatment plots contributed to new nodulation and enhanced growth of uninoculated trees was tested using mAb8C5 in ELISA of Frankia mycelium, extracted from the nodules of trees of the three treatments. No significant differences in reactivity were detected between nodules from uninoculated and 0RS020607 inoculated trees at either the black or the red soil sites, showing that 0RS020607 moved between treatment plots at both sites. However, at both sites, nodules from plots of trees that were inoculated originally with local crushed nodules gave reactions in ELISA that were significantly lower than values for 0RS020607 inoculated trees, possibly due to the competitive effects for new nodulation of enhancement of the indigenous population of Frankia. Serological techniques using antibodies of high specificity against Frankia strains have value for rapid screening of field samples as a preliminary for further analysis by more discriminatory techniques based on assays of genetic polymorphisms.  相似文献

The occurrence of mature individuals of Pseudotsuga menziesii in stands of Arctostaphylos species mark the initial stages of mixed evergreen forest invasion into chaparral in central coastal California. We planted two cohorts of P. menziesii seeds at three sites under stands of two Arctostaphylos species and Adenostoma fasciculatum in order to determine whether first-year seedling emergence and survival, particularly during the regular summer drought, underlie the spatial distribution of mature trees observed in chaparral. Regardless of the chaparral species they were planted under, P. menziesii seeds that were not protected from vertebrate predation displayed very little emergence and no survival. In contrast, emergence of P. menziesii that were protected from vertebrate predators was much higher but still did not significantly differ among the three chaparral species. However, survival of protected seedlings under Arctostaphylos glandulosa was much greater than under A. fasciculatum, with intermediate survival under Arctostaphylos montana. While mortality of protected seedlings due to insect herbivory, fungal infection, and disturbance displayed no consistent patterns, summer drought mortality appeared to drive the patterns of survival of P. menziesii under the different chaparral species. These emergence, mortality, and survival data suggest that spatial patterns of P. menziesii recruitment in chaparral are driven by first-year summer drought seedling mortality, but only in years when seeds and seedlings are released from vertebrate predation pressure. Because the first-year drought mortality and survival patterns of P. menziesii seedlings differed strongly depending on the chaparral species, we examined the additional hypothesis that these patterns are associated with differences in the availability of soil moisture under different chaparral species. Both higher survival and lower drought mortality of P. menziesii seedlings were associated with higher soil water potential under Arctostaphylos stands during the summer drought, especially in the subsurface soil. The data suggest that Arctostaphylos stands, particularly stands of A. glandulosa, ameliorate xeric summer conditions to a degree that facilitates first-year establishment of P. menziesii and strongly influences spatial distribution of mature trees. Vegetation change from drought-induced mortality can alter ecosystem community structure, biodiversity, and services. Although drought-induced mortality of woody plants has increased globally with recent warming, influences of soil type, tree and shrub groups, and species are poorly understood. Following the severe 2002 drought in northern Arizona, we surveyed woody plant mortality and canopy dieback of live trees and shrubs at the forest–woodland ecotone on soils derived from three soil parent materials (cinder, flow basalt, sedimentary) that differed in texture and rockiness. Our first of three major findings was that soil parent material had little effect on mortality of both trees and shrubs, yet canopy dieback of trees was influenced by parent material; dieback was highest on the cinder for pinyon pine (Pinus edulis) and one-seed juniper (Juniperus monosperma). Ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) dieback was not sensitive to parent material. Second, shrubs had similar mortality, but greater canopy dieback, than trees. Third, pinyon and ponderosa pines had greater mortality than juniper, yet juniper had greater dieback, reflecting different hydraulic characteristics among these tree species. Our results show that impacts of severe drought on woody plants differed among tree species and tree and shrub groups, and such impacts were widespread over different soils in the southwestern U.S. Increasing frequency of severe drought with climate warming will likely cause similar mortality to trees and shrubs over major soil types at the forest–woodland ecotone in this region, but due to greater mortality of other tree species, tree cover will shift from a mixture of species to dominance by junipers and shrubs. Surviving junipers and shrubs will also likely have diminished leaf area due to canopy dieback.  相似文献

采用盆栽试验与称重控水法,将土壤相对含水量分别控制在田间最大持水量的100%、91.68%、82.85%、60.00%、41.86%和21.28%,并在这6个不同的土壤相对含水量条件下,分别设添加苯菌灵(杀真菌剂)(低AMF)和不添加苯菌灵(高AMF)处理,研究干旱胁迫下AMF对极小种群野生植物云南蓝果树幼苗生长和光合特征的影响,揭示云南蓝果树濒危的微生物学机制,为云南蓝果树保护措施的制定与实施奠定基础。结果表明,添加苯菌灵处理显著降低了不同水分条件下的AMF侵染率,说明试验中AMF处理的实生苗在生长和光合特征上的差异是苯菌灵处理下侵染率下降导致的;随着干旱胁迫的加剧,云南蓝果树幼苗的根部AMF侵染率显著降低、叶面积等生长指标和净光合速率(Pn)等光合参数都发生显著变化;高AMF处理可以显著增加水分充足和轻度干旱胁迫条件下云南蓝果树幼苗的大部分生长指标和光合参数,而对重度胁迫下的云南蓝果树幼苗没有显著影响,说明重度干旱胁迫对其影响大于AMF的影响;另外,整合了可塑性指数分析和隶属函数分析两种方法对其抗旱性进行评价,云南蓝果树幼苗基本上无法通过调节形态和光合能力来适应水分环境的变化,但是高AMF处理可使云南蓝果树幼苗具有较强的可塑性和更强的抗旱性。实验结果为云南蓝果树的科学保育及种苗繁育提供了理论依据。  相似文献

Water deficiency is the primary limiting factor for tree growth in arid and semi-arid areas. Droughts associated with rising temperatures have increased in severity and frequency globally over the past few decades, making the trees in the drought-prone sites first be affected by water shortages. However, our understanding of tree growth status in these areas, and of their response to drought, is currently insufficient; especially in the context of global warming. Here, we studied 94 Chinese pine (Pinus tabulaeformis) and 86 spruce (Picea crassifolia) trees from different altitudes [2,100–2400 m above sea level (a.s.l.)] distributed at the desert margins of Northwestern China to explore tree growth and drought response from multiple perspectives using dendroecological approaches. Significant growth decline, across all tree species and altitudes, was detected in response to an interdecadal trend towards a drier climate. Moreover, the extent of tree growth decline, the proportion of affected trees, and the degree of moisture dependence have all tended to increase in each sample site, most likely due to enhanced drought severity and duration in recent decades. The more sensitive and susceptible trees were found at lower elevations (drier sites) and may signify a higher vulnerability to heating-induced drought stress. Tree resistance to drought showed strong negative correlation with drought severity across all sample sites. However, the connection between post-drought tree resilience and drought intensity is weak, perhaps because the samples were all collected from living trees, while those that had died were not sampled. The priority for future work should be to combine surviving and dead trees simultaneously, thus achieving a more representative view of tree resilience to drought; this will improve our knowledge of forest dynamics and even ecosystem succession in these vulnerable and sensitive environments.  相似文献

The underlying mechanisms of drought resistance in seedlings ofLarix kaempferi as compared with those inAbies veitchii were investigated. First, seedlings of the two species were desiccated in air of differing water potential, and their survival rates were compared to detect any difference in desiccation tolerance between them. Contrary to differences in their drought resistance,A. veitchii showed higher survival. Next, the shoot heights and root depths of the two species were compared to detect any difference in desiccation avoidance. Although the shoot height differed little between the two species, the roots ofL. kaempferi seedlings were much deeper than those ofA. veitchii seedlings, and the death rate under progressing drought was well correlated with the root extensibility of each species. It was thus concluded thatL. kaempferi seedlings are able to avoid desiccation by extending their roots in deep soil faster thanA. veitchii seedlings, thereby resisting to drought.
