Summary: Though harvester ants are closely similar in ecology, species differ in their worker size polymorphism as well as in the glandular source of their trail pheromones and defensive compounds. In the harvester ant Messor barbarus, we find that the recruitment trail pheromone is located in the Dufour gland, while defence-alarm substances are produced in the poison gland. We also investigated how the glandular development and the ethological response to these abdominal glands are related to worker body size. For both glands, M. barbarus workers show monophasic and nonisometric growths with slopes of allometric regression lines lower than 1. The highest trail-following response is elicited by the Dufour gland secretion from media workers, responsible for most foraging activities in M. barbarus. Aggressive behaviour is more frequently observed in the presence of poison gland secretions from medium and large-sized workers. Differences between species and between worker size classes in the ethological role of sting associated glands are discussed in relation to the foraging ecology and defensive characteristics of harvester ants. 相似文献

Mating success in the western harvester ant, Pogonomyrmex occidentalis, increases with male size. We tested the hypothesis that increased mating success increases male fitness and the fitness of colonies that make large males by comparing the sperm content of males prior to and at the conclusion of the mating swarm. The number of sperm a male initially possesses is a function of male size, and large males transfer a greater proportion of their sperm than do small males. For colonies, the payoff per unit of investment is an increasing function of male size, and investment in large males is not equivalent to investing in a larger number of small males. Allocation ratios in species that show size variation in reproductives may need to be modified by the individual fitness functions. 相似文献

We analyzed the sociogenetic organization of the ant (Leptothoraxacervorum) from Nrnberger Reichswald in Southern Germany. Accordingto relatedness estimates from allozyme analyses, virgin femalesexuals produced in polygynous colonies were on average fullsisters, whereas workers in a pooled sample of polygynous colonieswere significantly less closely related. Rather than attributingthis to reproductive hierarchies among nest mate queens, weshow how this phenomenon could result from seasonal fluctuationsof colony composition and a decline of the production of femalesexuals in polygynous colonies. We suggest that by queen adoptionand emigration or budding, colonies easily switch from monogynyto polygyny and vice versa. Due to the long developmental timeof sexual larvae, colonies that have become polygynous onlyrecently will still produce the female sexual progeny of a singlequeen. In older polygynous nests, fewer and fewer female sexualsare produced, but colonies may fragment into monogynous budsin which the production of female sexuals may begin again. Relatednessestimates, dissection results, and field observations supportthis suggestion. This pattern of cyclical monogyny and polygynykeeps nest mate relatedness high and probably facilitates colonyfounding in boreal habitats. Preliminary data suggest that thepattern of the production of sexuals in colonies of L. acervorumfits the expectations of sex allocation theory. 相似文献

Using four highly polymorphic microsatellite markers (12-28 alleles), we gentoyped workers from 63 colonies of Pogonomyrmex occidentalis. Colonies have a single, multiply mated queen, and an average number of 6.3 patrilines per colony. Colony growth was measured over an 8-year period in the study population. Intracolonial relatedness and colony growth are correlated negatively, indicating a substantial fitness benefit to multiple mating. 相似文献

Summary The structure and thermal environment produced by the nest cones of the western harvester ant,Pogonomyrmex occidentalis, are investigated. The nest cone is oriented so that the longest slope faces towards the southeast ad the nest entrance faces the southeast. The temperature of the soil was monitored at thirty-six locations within the nest in order to measure the daily temperature change as a function of depth, aspect and radial distance from the center of peak of the cone. The occupancy of the nest cone by workers and by brood was assessed by core samples taken at different times of day in different portions of the cone. The brood are only present during the midmorning sample and are present in greatest numbers on the eastern side of the cone. The adult workers are present in the cone in highest numbers during the midmorning, virtually absent from the cone during mid-afternoon and returning in smaller numbers at dusk, apparently spending the night near the surface on the eastern side of the mound. The eastern and southern portions of the cone are occupied most frequently while the western side of the cone is nearly vacant. The nest cone is an adaptation which magnifies the amplitude of daily temperature fluctation. By moving to appropriate areas of the nest cone, the ants can take advantage of the increased range of temperature. 相似文献

Directional fidelity as a foraging constraint in the western harvester ant,Pogonomyrmex occidentalis
Jennifer H. Fewell 《Oecologia》1990,82(1):45-51
Summary Understanding the foraging behavior of an animal is critically dependent upon knowledge of the constraints on that animal. In this study, I tested whether fidelity to foraging direction acts as a behavioral constraint to foraging western harvester ants, Pogonomyrmex occidentalis. Individual P. occidentalis foragers showed strong fidelity to foraging route and direction. Directional fidelity in this population was not related to trunk trail use, food specialization, colony activity levels, or mortality risks. Directional fidelity constrained individual foraging decisions; when colonies were offered seeds of different quality in 2 directions, individuals did not switch directions to obtain the energetically more rewarding seeds. Colony-level recruitment was increased for energetically more profitable seeds, indicating that colonial responses may compensate for the constraints of directional fidelity on individual foragers. 相似文献

Social insects are well-known for their ability to achieve robust collective behaviours even when individuals have limited information. It is often assumed that such behaviours rely on very large group sizes, but many insect colonies start out with only a few workers. Here we investigate the influence of colony size on collective decision-making in the house-hunting of the ant Temnothorax albipennis. In experiments where colony size was manipulated by splitting colonies, we show that worker number has an influence on the speed with which colonies discover new nest sites, but not on the time needed to make a decision (achieve a quorum threshold) or total emigration time. This occurred because split colonies adopted a lower quorum threshold, in fact they adopted the same threshold in proportion to their size as full-size colonies. This indicates that ants may be measuring relative quorum, i.e. population in the new nest relative to that of the old nest, rather than the absolute number. Experimentally reduced colonies also seemed to gain more from experience through repeated emigrations, as they could then reduce nest discovery times to those of larger colonies. In colonies of different sizes collected from the field, total emigration time was also not correlated with colony size. However, quorum threshold was not correlated with colony size, meaning that individuals in larger colonies adopted relatively lower quorum thresholds. Since this is a different result to that from size-manipulated colonies, it strongly suggests that the differences between natural small and large colonies were not caused by worker number alone. Individual ants may have adjusted their behaviour to their colony’s size, or other factors may correlate with colony size in the field. Our study thus shows the importance of experimentally manipulating colony size if the effect of worker number on the emergence of collective behaviour is to be studied. Desert seed-harvester ants, genus Pogonomyrmex, are central place foragers that search for resources collectively. We quantify how seed harvesters exploit the spatial distribution of seeds to improve their rate of seed collection. We find that foraging rates are significantly influenced by the clumpiness of experimental seed baits. Colonies collected seeds from larger piles faster than randomly distributed seeds. We developed a method to compare foraging rates on clumped versus random seeds across three Pogonomyrmex species that differ substantially in forager population size. The increase in foraging rate when food was clumped in larger piles was indistinguishable across the three species, suggesting that species with larger colonies are no better than species with smaller colonies at collecting clumped seeds. These findings contradict the theoretical expectation that larger groups are more efficient at exploiting clumped resources, thus contributing to our understanding of the importance of the spatial distribution of food sources and colony size for communication and organization in social insects. 相似文献

Summary: Ponerine ants display a number of social structures to which particular behaviours are associated. In the ponerine ant species Gnamptogenys striatula Mayr, queens occur and queenright colonies are functionally polygynous. However, some workers are capable to mate and to produce their own worker offspring. These gamergates appear several days after the queens are experimentally removed, allowing some workers to adopt a sexual calling posture inside the nest. At that time, other workers get outside the nest to collect males in the arena and carry them back into the colony. There, these males are groomed before they can mate with sexual calling workers. As for queens, several gamergates may coexist in a same colony. The social profile of gamergates is similar to those of nurses and they stay closer to the egg piles. 相似文献

Mating success in males of the lek mating ant species,Pogonomyrmex occidentalis, increases with increased body size. We estimated the magnitude of the selection coefficients on components of size by collecting males in copula and comparing their morphology to that of males that were collected at the lek but that were not mating. Four characters, body mass, head width, wing length, and leg length, were measured for a sample of 225 mating and 324 nonmating males and 225 females. Significant direct selection favors increased wing length and leg length. Multiple regression of transformed variables (principal components) indicated that the increased mating success of larger males is a function of all four characters. We found no evidence of positive assortative mating on the basis of any individual character or on the multivariate general size variable (the first principal component). 相似文献

Colony structure of a slavemaking ant. I. Intracolony relatedness, worker reproduction, and polydomy 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Colony and population structure of the obligate slavemaker ant Protomognathus americanus was analyzed via four nuclear microsatellite loci and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) markers. Colonies of P. americanus usually contain a single queen, and here we show that she is singly inseminated. Nestmate workers are generally full sisters and their relatedness does not deviate from the expected value of 0.75. Even though colonies were strictly monogynous, we were able to infer that colony takeover by related queens was common and queen replacement by unrelated queens was rare. Polydomy is widespread, with neighboring nests having the same genetic composition. Although we found no evidence of population viscosity or inbreeding from nuclear markers, mtDNA markers provided evidence for small-scale genetic structuring. Haplotype structuring and takeover by related queens suggest philopatry of newly mated queens. In this species, workers reproduce in queenright and queenless nests and worker reproduction accounts for more than 70% of all males. Although sex-ratio theory points to slavemaking ants as important systems for studying queen-worker conflict, our results indicate no basis for such conflict in P. americanus, because extensive worker reproduction generates shifts in relatedness values. Rather, the dual effects of independent polydomous nest units and local resource competition among queens produce male-biased allocation ratios in this species. 相似文献

In the polymorphic harvester ant Messor barbarus, the colony modulates response during foraging according to seed characteristics. The easiness of picking up small seeds (oat fragments or canaryseeds) shortens the time lapse between food discovery and the return of scouts to the nest, favouring the onset of recruitment and higher mobilisation rates than bigger seeds (whole oat). However, size is not the only criterion, as canaryseeds are preferred among small ones. A modulation of the trail laid by the first scouts also plays a role in the shaping of harvesting patterns and in the enhancement of recruitment towards small and/or preferred seed. This flexibility extends to the relative participation of the three worker sizes classes, which differs according to seed. Media are the most numerous at the foraging arena and largely responsible for trail-laying. Minor participate in seed harvesting and trail-laying, mostly when they can be efficient in carrying seeds, such as oat fragments. Major scarcely participate in harvesting and trail-laying, but are involved in the exploitation of bigger and/or preferred seed species. When faced with different seed species, M. barbarus seems thus to collectively adopt a “foraging time minimisation” rather than an “energetic gain per item harvested maximisation” strategy. Dynamics of foraging and division of labour between foragers of different sizes are related to both the workers’ ability to carry seed items, and the transfer of information to nestmates by trail-laying, all parameters that vary according to seed characteristics. 相似文献

- 1 Fields of citrus, cacao and rubber in Trinidad were surveyed to measure the number and density of nests of Acromyrmex octospinosus. The greatest density (=153 nests/ha) was in an undisturbed field of young cacao; in established crops density ranged from 3–36 nests/ha.
- 2 Mounds of new nests appeared throughout the year, but most often 4–10 months after the main nuptial flights. Nests reached maximum size, with up to 17 holes, about three years after foundation.
- 3 The ratio of workers to brood was between 5 and 9: 1 for most of the year but it increased to 27: 1 as the sexuals developed. A medium-large colony produced 200–300 queens and males/year; the largest single nest contained about 14,000 individuals.
- 4 The average intake of leaf fragments into laboratory nests was 1 fragment/6.5 individuals. It increased to 1 fragment/2.1 individuals when sexuals were present. Foragers collecting from fields of established cacao preferred flowers to leaves.
- 5 In fields with crops planted on cambered beds, nests were concentrated on the dry edges of drains in the dry season, but they were moved to drier ground in the wet season. Nests were aggregated in 13 of the 16 fields examined, the remaining three fields were exceptionally well drained.
- 6 In newly planted cacao an estimated 6—17% of plants were defoliated and destroyed. In established cacao ants collected about 3000 flowers/ha each day. Laboratory data suggest that ants could defoliate about 25 three-year old citrus trees in a year.

Summary: Queens of the pharaoh's ant Monomorium pharaonis (L.), like several other ant species, feed on larval secretions as their main nourishment and their fecundity is positively correlated with the number of large larvae present in the nest. The surplus of secretions produced by larvae is stored in a temporary caste of replete workers, which comprises young workers who remain in the nest and store liquid nourishment. Repletes are characterised by a conspicuously large gaster, caused by large amounts of liquid food stored in the crop, from which it may be regurgitated and distributed among colony members. In this study, repletes of pharaoh's ants were demonstrated to be functioning as buffers, smoothing fluctuations in availability of high quality food to the reproductive queens when larvae are scarce or missing, thus temporarily keeping up the egg production of queens.¶In undisturbed two-queen colonies with 20 large worker larvae and 30 workers (15 young and 15 old workers), approximately 10 repletes developed (one replete per two larvae). Development of older workers into repletes, when some or all repletes had been removed from the colonies, demonstrated that their temporal polyethism exhibits great plasticity in this trait.¶This study confirmed that, in pharaoh's ants, the regulation of fecundity depends not only on the food flow to the queen from larvae or from repletes but also on an unknown larval stimulus.¶The term crop repletes is suggested for replete workers which use their crop to store nourishment, as opposed to fat-body repletes, which store nourishment in their fat body.¶The presence of brood tending crop repletes in nests in several European ant species of Leptothorax, Myrmica, and Lasius, show that repletism is a common trait in ants, and that it may play an important role in regulation of nutrition in ant colonies, as demonstrated in Monomorium pharaonis. 相似文献
