Interspecific hybridization may occur in situations of recent contact between a colonizer and a resident species, being more intense in the colonization front. Atlantic salmon Salmo salar and brown trout S. trutta have been sympatric species since their origin and they share spatial and temporal spawning niches, exhibiting low levels of bidirectional interspecific hybridization and introgression throughout their distribution range. Different causes have been identified for increased hybridization, from escapes or deliberate releases of domesticated fish to sneaking male behavior. We have examined hybridization rates and direction in different situations of advance of one of these species into a territory formerly inhabited by the other (247 samples were analyzed in northern Spain and 487 in Kerguelen Islands). In all cases, hybrids found in the colonization front were offspring of colonizer females and resident males. We hypothesize that these findings are the result of adaptive relaxed mate choice of colonizing females, regardless of the relative abundance of each species. 相似文献

The aims of the present study were to assess the microbial quality of Mya arenaria clams from the north shore of the St. Lawrence River estuary and to validate various microbial indicator microorganisms of bivalve mollusks contamination. Clams were collected from nine sites, including four harvesting sites closed by virtue of the Canadian Shellfish Sanitation Program (CSSP). Six contamination indicators (fecal coliforms, somatic coliphages, F-specific coliphages, fecal streptococci, Clostridium perfringens, and Escherichia coli) and four pathogens (Campylobacter sp., Cryptosporidium parvum, Giardia sp., and Salmonella sp.) were identified in the clams. Indicators sensibility, specificity and predictive values with respect to the presence of pathogens were calculated. Pathogenic microorganisms detection frequency in clams was important (92%). Globally, pathogens tend to be less frequently detected in opened harvesting sites (p = 0.086). Although the assessed indicators were not perfect, when F-specific coliphages are associated with E. coli or fecal coliforms, a good sensibility (62%-64%) and good positive predictive value (88%) with respect to the investigated pathogens are obtained. 相似文献

A serological technique known as ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) was used in an attempt to aid the identification of visually unidentifiable seabird stomach contents. A series of seabird-prey muscle-protein antisera was established. When these antisera were tested against pieces of digested and undigested prey species, the ELISA technique detected the prey from both digested and undigested samples. This method also enabled rapid quantitative analysis of the samples. 相似文献

Reproduction and growth of a boulder beach population of the nocturnal skink Leiolopisma suteri on Motutapu Island were studied for 19 months. Epididymes contain sperm from April to November, and copulation probably occurs in October or November (spring). Ovulation occurs in late October or early November, and three or four (mean, 3.7) eggs are laid in late December. Incubation takes 3 months. Total development time from ovulation to hatching is 5 months, one of the longest development periods recorded for Scincidae. Growth to sexual maturity is slow, most females depositing their first clutch 33 months after hatching; males mature at 29 months. 相似文献

The changes in the activities of mucus hydrolytic enzymes and plasma cortisol levels were examined following infection of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar with the salmon louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis and these changes were compared with those resulting from elevated plasma cortisol. Salmon were infected at high (Trial 1; 178 +/- 67) and low (Trial 2; 20 +/- 13) numbers of lice per fish and the activities of proteases, alkaline phosphatase, esterase and lysozyme in the mucus, as well as plasma cortisol levels were determined. At both levels of infection, there were significant increases of protease activity over time (1-way K-WANOVA; Trial 1, p = 0.004; Trial 2, p < 0.001). On several sampling days, generally on later days in the infections, the mucus protease activities of infected fish were significantly higher than control fish (Student's t-tests; p < 0.05). In addition, zymography experiments demonstrated bands of proteases at 17 to 22 kDa in the mucus of infected salmon that were absent in the mucus from non-infected fish and absent in the plasma of salmon. The intensity of these protease bands increased in the mucus over the course of both infections. However, plasma cortisol levels were elevated only in the heavily infected fish from the first trial. At high infection levels (Trial 1), alkaline phosphatase activity was higher in the mucus of infected fish at all days (t-test, p < 0.05). However, at the lower infection level (Trial 2), the mucus alkaline phosphatase activity did not differ significantly between infected and non-infected fish. Esterase and lysozyme activities were very low and did not change with time nor between non-infected and infected salmon in either challenge. Mucus enzyme activities of cortisol-implanted salmon did not change over time, nor were there any differences in activities between cortisol-implanted and control salmon. The present study demonstrates biochemical changes resulting from sea lice infection of Atlantic salmon occurring at the site of host-pathogen interaction, the mucus layer. However, the origin of these enzymes, whether host or pathogen, remains to be determined. 相似文献

Three tagged Atlantic salmon Salmo salar were recaptured as subadults or adults (1·4–3 kg) between 70·5 and 78° N in the western Barents Sea, two of which originated from the Alta Fjord region in northern Norway and one from the Drammen River, south-eastern Norway. An additional tag was recovered from the stomach of a Greenland halibut Reinhardtius hippoglossoides captured south-west of Bear Island at >600 m depth; this tag was from a smolt released in the River Alta 1 month earlier. These are the northernmost tag recoveries reported for Atlantic salmon, and indicate that Norwegian Atlantic salmon, especially the fish from northern populations, may use the northern Barents Sea as a feeding area during part of their life cycle. 相似文献

Many currently accepted notions of motor control originate from a few seminal concepts developed in the latter half of the 19th century (see Bennett and Hacker, 2002). The goal of this review is to retrace some current ideas about motor control back to the thought of three French neurologists of Hospital of the Salpetrière hospital in Paris during the latter half of the 19th century and early 20th century (Fig. 1): Guillaume Duchenne de Boulogne (1806–1875), Jean-Martin Charcot (1825–1893), and Babinski, 1886, Babinski, 1896, Babinski, 1898, Babinski, 1899, Babinski, 1900, Babinski, 1902, Babinski, 1903, Babinski, 1909, Babinski, 1913. A common theoretical and methodological thread unites these three men as Charcot was taught neurology by Duchenne, and Babinski was trained by Charcot. The influential concepts developed by these pioneering French neurologists have been neglected for nearly a century and only rediscovered recently. We intend to highlight how these astute clinicians used their meticulous clinical observations of patients to reveal novel and original perspectives of motor co-ordination. Between 1850 and 1930, all three men played a major role in developing and shaping the entire field of normal and pathological motor control in addition to making important contributions to three major scientific issues; the centralist view of muscle sense, the emerging concept of muscle synergy in voluntary movements and in locomotion and finally the specific role of the cerebellum in muscle synergy. The important contributions of these men will be considered in the context of other significant schools of neurology from other countries. Finally, the concept of cerebellar asynergy as proposed by Babinski anticipated the development of the internal models which much later were able to provide a theoretical basis for understanding the mechanism of learned motor co-ordination involving the cerebellum. 相似文献

Variation in circulus spacing on the scales of wild Atlantic salmon is indicative of changes in body length growth rate. We analyzed scale circulus spacing during the post-smolt growth period for adult one sea-winter salmon (n = 1947) returning to Scotland over the period 1993–2011. The growth pattern of the scales was subjectively and visually categorized according to the occurrence and zonal sequence of three intercirculus spacing criteria (“Slow”, “Fast” and “Check” zones). We applied hierarchical time-series cluster analysis to the empirical circulus spacing data, followed by post hoc analysis of significant changes in growth patterns within the 20 identified clusters. Temporal changes in growth pattern frequencies showed significant correlation with sea surface temperature anomalies during the early months of the post-smolt growth season and throughout the Norwegian Sea. Since the turn of the millennium, we observed (a) a marked decrease in the occurrence of continuous Fast growth; (b) increased frequencies of fish showing an extended period of initially Slow growth; and (c) the occurrence of obvious growth Checks or hiatuses. These changes in post-smolt growth pattern were manifest also in decreases in the mean body length attained by the ocean midwinter, as sea surface temperatures have risen. 相似文献

Growth of farmed, wild and F1 hybrid Atlantic salmon parr Salmo salar was investigated under three contrasting feeding regimes in order to understand how varying levels of food availability affects relative growth. Treatments consisted of standard hatchery feeding (ad libitum), access to feed for 4 h every day, and access to feed for 24 h on three alternate days weekly. Mortality was low in all treatments, and food availability had no effect on survival of all groups. The offspring of farmed S. salar significantly outgrew the wild S. salar, while hybrids displayed intermediate growth. Furthermore, the relative growth differences between the farmed and wild S. salar did not change across feeding treatments, indicating a similar plasticity in response to feed availability. Although undertaken in a hatchery setting, these results suggest that food availability may not be the sole driver behind the observed reduced growth differences found between farmed and wild fishes under natural conditions. 相似文献

Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) cDNAs encoding the major histocompatibility complex (Mhc-Sasa) class II chain were isolated from a leucocyte library by a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) approach. Three different cDNAs (c144, c22, and c157) encoding the entire mature chain have been analyzed. Clone c144 differs from clone c157 in 12.6% of the nucleotides in the 1-encoding region. The corresponding differences between clones c144 and c22, and clones c22 and c157, are 10.3% and 5.2%, respectively. This variation is, at least in part, most likely attributable to allelism. The similarity indices between the highly conserved 2 domains from Atlantic salmon and corresponding sequences from humans (DQ), chicken (BL), carp (TLAII-1), and rainbow trout (O. M. No. 55) are 45%, 40%, 66%, and 97%, respectively. Variable residues in the 1 domains from Atlantic salmon correspond with polymorphic sites of 1 domains from higher vertebrates. The frequency of substitutions in the 1-encoding region exceeds that in the 3-untranslated (UT) region with several folds, indicating extensive 1 polymorphism in Atlantic salmon. The nucleotide sequence data reported in this paper have been submitted to the GenBank nucleotide sequence database and have been assigned the accession numbers (C 144) X 70165, (C 157) X 70166, and (C 22) X 70167.This study was supported by grants from the Norwegian Fisheries Research Council (NFFR) and the Norwegian Agricultural Research Council (NLVF). 相似文献

To obtain direct dietary information, carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios were measured from bone collagen acquired from the well-preserved skeleton of a Magdalenian woman from the site of Saint-Germain-la-Rivière in southwestern France. Comparison of delta13C and delta15N values of the human bone collagen to those of bone collagen from local herbivores and carnivores indicates that the woman's primary source of protein was the meat of large terrestrial herbivores. Application of a linear mixing model to the woman's isotopic signature indicates that (1) no significant marine-derived protein contributed to her average diet; (2) saiga antelope, which dominates the faunal remains at Saint-Germain-la-Rivière, was not the main source of terrestrial protein; and (3) her pattern of subsistence reflects a less opportunistic behavior than generally attributed to humans from this period. Dietary proportions of prey reflected by the number of identified specimens are revised using meat percentage estimates, which de-emphasize the importance of saiga antelope in human subsistence at Saint-Germain-la-Rivière during the middle Magdalenian. 相似文献

Under attack by herbivores, plants produce a blend of “herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPV)” that help natural enemies of herbivores locating their prey, thereby helping plants to reduce damage from herbivory. The amount of HIPV emitted by plants increases with herbivore density and is positively correlated with the intensity of the olfactory response of natural enemies. In this study, we determined the effects of density or within-plant distribution of the herbivorous mite Mononychellus tanajoa on movement of the predatory mite Typhlodromalus aripo out of apices of cassava plants. Proportions of T. aripo that migrated out of apex, and distances traveled were significantly higher when M. tanajoa was further away from the apex—i.e. on middle or bottom leaves of cassava plants—than when present on top leaves, or absent from the plant. This supports previous field observations that T. aripo is not a sit-and-wait predator but uses HIPV to search and locate its prey within cassava plant. 相似文献

From a quantitative inventory of sulphur forms and sulphur budget, the relation between the distribution of the various sulphur forms and the sulphate fluxes in three soil profiles has been addressed. These profiles are located in two forested watersheds at Mont Lozère. One has been sampled in a beech forest and the other two in a spruce forest and in a harvested plot of this spruce forest, respectively. The mean annual input-output budgets showed a sulphur immobilization in the soil cover of the three plots. In the preserved spruce forest plot, because of larger dry depositions, the sulphur immobilization is much greater than in other plots and occurs essentially in the B horizons. In the other two profiles, the dominant immobilization occurs in the parent material. The total sulphur content is very high in the forest floor reaching 2065 g S g-1 in the litter of one of the soils under spruce. In the organo-mineral horizons of soils under spruce, the total sulphur content decreases with depth and ranges from 310 to 520 g S g-1 in the A horizons to 100–200 g S g-1 in the parent material. In the profile under beech, the total sulphur content is lower except in the parent material. In all cases, the organic sulphur is the major part of sulphur often representing more than 90% of total sulphur. In organo-mineral soil horizons of the spruce forest, the part of the sulphateesters is more important than in the soil of the beech forest, probably related to the different nature of the microbial activity in the spruce forest. In contrast, the humification processes are more efficient in the soil under beech, which can be due to the greater input of organic sulphur by litterfall. It appears that the dominant organic sulphur form varies as a function of microbial ecology and sulphate flux. The maximum of the inorganic sulphate is located at the base of the B horizons in the soil of the spruce forest and in the parent material of the soil under beech. In these horizons, the high content of inorganic sulphate can be related to the higher amounts of amorphous Fe and Al phases. 相似文献

During the 20th century, the first dinosaur tracks of the Causses Basin were identified at Saint-Laurent-de-Trèves, in the Parc National des Cévennes (southern France). A recent excavation reveals a new theropod tracksite in the Hettangian deposits from Le Mazel, 2 km from the historical tracksite at Saint-Laurent-de-Trèves. The tracks are here described combining a biometric approach and 3D imaging photogrammetry. The main track-bearing surface bears 64 in situ tridactyl footprints preserved as concave epireliefs. Two morphotypes were identified, a “Grallatorid” morphotype and a “Kayentapus” morphotype. Footprints belonging to the first morphotype are closely similar to Grallator lescurei, Grallator minusculus, and Grallator sauclierensis. This study shows the difficulty to distinguish quite similar tridactyl tracks from an ichnotaxonomic point of view and highlights the importance of detailed biometric comparisons. Tracks are preserved in a brown to yellowish dolomudstone showing abundant cryptalgal laminites and mud cracks. These deposits were accrued in shallow environments such as intertidal and supratidal zones of a tidal flat. 相似文献

Summary Light and electron microscopy were used to analyze the morphology and ultrastructure of the spermatozoon of Fissurella nigra and Fissurella picta, two sympatric species of keyhole limpets from the southern Chilean coast. The spermatozoa of both species are of the aquasperm type, typical of species with external fertilization. Each species had its own distinctive spermatic morphology, particularly in relation to size. Proceeding from anterior to posterior, the spermatozoa of both species each consists of an elongated head with a conical acrosome having a deep subacrosomal space and truncated conical nucleus, followed by a midpiece containing five mitochondria associated in a compact ring around the proximal and distal centrioles, and, at the end, a flagellum. The spermatozoon head of F. nigra is almost twice as long as that of F. picta. This difference constitutes the first morphological evidence that the size of the spermatozoon could represent a candidate for the maintenance of reproductive isolation between these two sympatric species. 相似文献

The Galápagos marine iguana, Amblyrhynchus cristatus, is unique among lizards in foraging subtidally, leading to activity across a broad range of ambient temperatures ( approximately 14-40 degrees C). To determine whether the marine iguana shows any biochemical changes consistent with maintaining enzyme function at both warm and cold body temperatures, we examined the function of the aerobic enzyme citrate synthase (CS) and the muscle isoform of the anaerobic enzyme lactate dehydrogenase (A(4)-LDH) in A. cristatus and a confamilial species, Iguana iguana, from 14 to 46 degrees C. We also deduced amino acid sequences from cDNA of each enzyme. In CS, despite two amino acid substitutions, we found no difference in the apparent Michaelis-Menten constant K(m) of oxaloacetate at any temperature, indicating that the substrate affinity of CS in A. cristatus has not adapted to changes in thermal environment. In A(4)-LDH, we used site-directed mutagenesis to show that the substitutions T9A and I283V (A. cristatus --> I. iguana) individually have no effect on kinetics, but together significantly decrease the K(m) of pyruvate and catalytic rate constant (k(cat)) of the A. cristatus ortholog. Thus, our data show that A. cristatus A(4)-LDH has not become cold adapted in response to this species' aquatic foraging behavior, and instead may be consistent with moderate warm adaptation with respect to the I. iguana ortholog. 相似文献
