Short sediment cores from two small oxbow lakes located in the Vistula valley near Warsaw (Poland) were analysed for chemical composition and zooplankton (Cladocera) remains. The results of these analyses were evaluated using ordination techniques and the results were used to reconstruct the history of human impact of the lakes. The cores were dated using the 210Pb method. These analyses show that the collected sediments (60 cm- and 67 cm-long-cores) were deposited during the last 150–200 years. Cladocera assemblages were different in the two lakes; however, Bosmina longirostris was dominant among subfossil Cladocera species in both lakes. The presence of this species indicates the high trophic state of the lakes. Changes in Cladocera species composition suggest that a significant increase in the lakes’ trophic levels has occurred since the 1920s. The change could be related to the construction of flood dikes along the river Vistula, the isolation of the studied lakes from the river, changes in land use, or some combination of these factors. The chemical composition of sediments, particularly the increase in phosphorus and sulphur concentrations, confirms that the construction of dikes against flood was the major factor inducing eutrophication of the oxbow lakes. This study shows that the Warsaw small water bodies are especially sensitive to local disturbances caused by human activity, mainly water management, land use changes and agriculture. Four oxbow lakes and two neighbouring sections of their parent Warta River (Odra River system, Poland) were sampled to investigate differences in fish assemblages between habitats in 1999–2000. Additional comparisons were made with 12 other oxbow lakes in this section of the river that were sampled 30–40 years ago. Downstream of a man‐made reservoir, higher species number, diversity and evenness were recorded in oxbow lakes than in the river channel. Upstream of the reservoir, differences in these variables from both habitats were insignificant. Fluvial and stagnant water samples were clearly separated in the multivariate space of a detrended correspondence analysis (DCA). For two oxbow lakes and two neighbouring sections of the Warta River, 12 abiotic and biotic environmental variables were available, and only velocity, water temperature and conductivity were significantly correlated with canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) axes. Fish assemblages of four recently investigated oxbow lakes were clearly separated in the multivariate space of DCA from other neighbouring oxbows sampled 30–40 years ago. Species previously subdominant were becoming rare. Oxbow lakes that are continuously or at least periodically connected with the channel are indispensable for maintaining high biodiversity and a sustainable fishery in the river system.  相似文献

The main aim of the survey was to describe the diversity and richness of Chilopoda in the selected area of the Bug River valley. The study sites were located in two regions differing in the shape of the valley, the presence of thermophilous habitats and the size of riparian forests. Pitfall traps were used as a sampling method. As a result, 444 specimens belonging to 12 centipede species of two orders – Geophilomorpha (four species) and Lithobiomorpha (eight species) were caught. Lithobius (Monotarsobius) curtipes C.L.Koch, 1847, Pachymerium ferrugineum (C.L.Koch, 1835), Lamyctes (Lamyctes) emarginatus (Newport, 1844) and Lithobius (Monotarsobius) dudichi Loksa, 1947 were the most common and the most numerous species. Of particular note is Lithobius dudichi found in Poland for the first time and previously known based on a single specimen. Two to 10 Chilopoda species were found in each habitat under investigation. The greatest species richness was found in thermophilous thickets (10 species), sandy grasslands (eight), xerothermic grasslands (eight) and mesic meadows (six). The fewest number of species (two) was found in rushes at oxbows and in wet meadows. We found differences in the species composition and the number of Chilopoda between the lower (102 specimens, six species) and the middle (324 specimens, 11 species) section of the river valley. Our results confirm the need to protect xerothermic habitats, unique almost throughout entire Central Europe, which due to their distribution and their small area covered are fairly easily subject to the process of destruction.  相似文献

We conducted grazing experiments to test whether larger-bodiedDaphnia pulicaria have a different effect from smaller-bodiedDaphnia galeata mendotae on the composition of summer algalassemblages in eutrophic lakes. Three separate cubitainer experimentswere run for 5 days in a replicated factorial design utilizingtwo algal community types and the two Daphnia species. Inorganicphosphorus and nitrogen were added to prevent nutrient limitationof the algae. Both edible and inedible size fractions of chlorophylla increased in cubitainers without Daphnia spp. Grazer additionusually resulted in a reduction in edible chlorophyll; reductionswere greater in D.pulicaria cubitainers. Grazing by Daphniaspp. on presumed inedible chlorophyll was variable. Algal sizewas not always a good predictor of grazeability. The resultsof this study indicate that D.pulicaria, because of its greaterfiltration potential and ability to ingest larger particles, provides a stronger control on inedible-sized algae when comparedto equal numerical densities of D.g.mendotae. However, Aphanizomenonincreased as a response to heavy grazing pressure by D.pulicariaon other algal species. This suggests that biomanipulation effortsthat promote large-bodied Daphnia may not produce desirableresults if nutrient inputs remain high.  相似文献

Regulation of lake water level for power production and flood control is among the major anthropogenic disturbances in boreal aquatic ecosystems. In Finland, over 300 lakes, representing one third of the total inland water area of the country, are artificially regulated. To study the effects of regulation on lake littoral macroinvertebrate communities, samples were taken from upper stony littoral and from lower soft bottom littoral habitats of 11 lakes with different regulation amplitudes (wintertime fall in water level 1.19–6.75 m). Twelve unregulated (wintertime fall in water level 0.11–0.55 m) lakes with otherwise similar characteristics were used as a reference. Non-metric Multidimensional Scaling ordinations showed that the composition of macroinvertebrate assemblages was strongly associated with the amplitude of water level regulation. Taxon richness also decreased with increasing intensity of regulation. Freezing and flushing of sediments in late winter are probably the most important factors leading to the impoverished littoral macroinvertebrate fauna. Invertebrates with long life cycle seem to be particularly vulnerable to unnatural water level fluctuation. Our results show that regulation of water level has a major impact on functionally significant lake littoral macroinvertebrates.  相似文献

Disturbances, such as rainfall and hydrological management of Vouglans reservoir, seem to influence the establishment of the ecological system inside this man-made lake. In this paper, the main effect of these disturbances are changes in the zmix:zeu ratio, with a shift in the composition and phytoplankton dynamics, and consequently in the Shannon's diversity. The seasonal changes found in the surface layers of Vouglans reservoir were typical for mesotrophic and temperate lakes, but some perturbations induced the ‘reversion’ to an earlier stage in the expected successional pattern during the stratification period. This early-state displayed an intensive proliferation of the filamentous ulotrichal Planctonema lauterbornii, which remained dominant in terms of abundance from the middle to the end of the stratification. The beginning of this period was characterized by the highest value of Shannon diversity index, followed by its marked decrease, whilst zmix:zeu remained around 1. Despite the environmental variations which induced the reversion in this expected pattern, we found some sort of equilibrium, that is, stability in the assemblage simply expressed as a ‘no-change situation’, although not in the sense of equilibrium inside a competitive system. Moreover, peculiar freshwater red tides occurred in this reservoir involving Rhodomonas lacustris and Peridiniopsis durandi, whose dynamical events were also influenced by external forces.  相似文献

Late summer phytoplankton associations were studied qualitatively and quantitatively in 80 Hungarian lakes altogether (mostly shallow salt lakes, reservoirs, oxbows, gravel pit lakes). Equilibrium phases sensu Sommer et al. (1993) were found only in 17 lakes. Most of them were under some kind (high salt content or very low level of nutrients) of stress factor. It is concluded that environmental stress forces phytoplankton communities towards equilibrium. No relationship between occurrence of equilibria and trophic state was found. Species number of non-equilibrated lakes was almost three times as high as those in equilibrium. Of the 31 recently described (Reynolds et al., 2002) phytoplankton assemblages most of those were recognized that are likely to occur in shallow lakes. Separation of a functional group W S from W2 for Synura dominated lakes is suggested. It seemed also necessary to raise a group (Y Ph) for lakes dominated by Phacotus. Sorting of Dinophyta species into different already described functional groups is desirable.  相似文献

For four temperate lakes (Northeast U.S.A.) we identify periods of persistent phytoplankton assemblages and investigate the ecological conditions that correlate to these persistent assemblages. Periods of persistent assemblages, here considered as steady-state phases, were defined according to equilibrium criteria (two or three coexisting species, contributing to 80% of the standing biomass, for at least 2 weeks) defined by Sommer et al. (1993, Hydrobiologia 249: 1–7). For all four lakes, samples were taken weekly during the ice-free season and phytoplankton attributes (biomass, assemblages, diversity, species richness, change rates) and abiotic variables (temperature, I* – as light mean in the mixing zone – zmix, and nutrients) were analysed. Chodikee (CH), an eutrophic and rapidly flushed lake, did not show any persistent phase. The remaining three lakes showed single steady-state phases that occurred at varying times during the ice-free season. Steady-state phases occurred during early stratification in late spring in the stably stratified oligotrophic Mohonk Lake (MO), in the late summer stratification in the meso-eutrophic Stissing Lake (ST), and during spring mixing in Wononscopomuc Lake (WO). MO showed a 3-week period with dominance of F assemblage (Botryococcus braunii, Willea wilhelmii and Eutetramorus planctonicus), characteristic for clear epilimnia, tolerant to low nutrient and sensitive to high turbidity. For three weeks, ST had a stable assemblage with dominance of Lo(Woronichinia sp.), common assemblage in summer epilimnion of mesotrophic lakes and sensitive to prolonged or deep mixing; and P, assemblage able to live in eutrophic epilimnia with mild light and sensitive to stratification and silica depletion. In contrast, the mesotrophic Wononscopomuc Lake (WO) showed persistent assemblages during a 4-week period of spring circulation, when a dinoflagellate (Lo) was co-dominant with Nitzschia acicularis (C). The latter species is characteristic for mesotrophic lakes, tolerant to low light and sensitive to stratification and silica depletion. Both Lo and P assemblages, among seven others, had before been quoted, in literature, as dominant in maturing stages. We could not find consistent statistical differences between the periods classified as steady-state and non-steady-state. However, the data demonstrated that prolonged period of both mixing and stratification can maintain dominant assemblages. Although, historically sensed as opposite mechanisms, both mixing and stratification, if persistent, were observed maintaining dominant assemblages because both scenarios are characterized by environmental constancy.  相似文献

Here, we use a novel space-by-time approach to study large-scale changes in phytoplankton species distribution in Swedish boreal lakes in response to climate variability. Using phytoplankton samples from 27 lakes, evenly distributed across Sweden, all relatively unimpacted by anthropogenic disturbance and sampled annually between 1996 and 2010, we found significant shifts in the geographical distribution of 18 species. We also found significant changes in the prevalence of 45 species (33 became more common and 12 less common) over the study period. Using species distribution models and phytoplankton samples from 60 lakes sampled at least twice between 1992 and 2010, we evaluated the importance of climate variability and other environmental variables on species distribution. We found that temperature (e.g., extreme events and the duration of the growing season) was the most important predictor for species detections. Many cyanobacteria, chlorophytes, and, to a lesser extent, diatoms and zygnematophytes, showed congruent and positive responses to temperature. In contrast, precipitation explained little variation and was important only for a few taxa (e.g., Staurodesmus spp., Trachelomonas volvocina). At the community level, our results suggest a change in community composition at temperatures over 20 °C and growing seasons longer than 40 days. We conclude that climate is an important driver of the distributional patterns of individual phytoplankton species and may drive changes in community composition in minimally disturbed boreal lakes.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to assess the response of Trichoptera in a patchy tailwater stretch of the Drzewiczka River (Poland) to dam removal as compared to the previous pulse discharge disturbance. The study was carried out in the river at the end of a whitewater slalom canoeing track located downstream of the dam reservoir called Drzewieckie Lake (area 0.84 km2). Between February and April 2002, the dam reservoir was gradually emptied before its dredging, and the Drzewiczka River recovered its natural discharge (1.7–4.5 ms−1) for several years (temporary renaturisation). Altogether, 120 monthly samples of macroinvertebrates and their environments were collected in two sampling cycles, S1 in 2000–2001 during high discharge fluctuations (2.1–12.0 ms−1 daily) and S2 in 2002–2003 during renaturisation after emptying the reservoir, from the following five habitats: HP—pool habitat, HS—stagnant habitat, HM—macrophyte habitat, HB—bank habitat and HR—riffle habitat. On the basis of trichopteran abundance, the patterns in their assemblages were recognised with use of a self-organising map that was a Kohonen artificial neural network. The obtained classification of trichopteran samples was found to be based in general on the spatial criterion, i.e. dependent on habitats, irrespective of which sampling cycle the samples originated from, which clearly showed that the habitat mosaic of the river bed was observed both in S1 and S2. In addition, a very important function was noted for riparian and land plants, which developed intensively at the bottom of the Drzewieckie Reservoir immediately after it was emptied. They restricted extensive transport of reservoir sediments to the downstream river reach, thus reducing differences between S1 and S2 in the tailwater. It is also worth noting that in S1, in comparison to S2, Cyrnus trimaculatus, Mystacides azurea and Lype reducta flowing downstream from the reservoir were observed more frequently in the river, which confirmed that impoundments can be conducive to the presence of certain species downstream of dams. Summing up, although artificial short-term flow fluctuations usually diminish the quality and quantity of benthos, the article presents a case in which they were small and short enough to allow the formation of a mosaic of bed patches and positively affected certain parameters of macrobenthic communities according to the intermediate disturbance hypothesis. 1. During recent decades, Gonyostomum semen populations have spread in northern temperate regions forming dense blooms that may dominate the phytoplankton assemblage for extended periods. In this study, we investigate the effects of G. semen blooms in boreal brown water lakes with special emphasis on phytoplankton, fish and benthic invertebrate assemblages using data from 10 boreal lakes sampled annually over a 10‐year period. 2. Significant differences in phytoplankton and benthic invertebrate assemblages were found between lakes with high (3.01 mm3 L?1; >80% phytoplankton biomass) and lakes with low G. semen biomass (0.03 mm3 L?1; <5% phytoplankton biomass). In particular, high G. semen lakes had lower biomass of smaller, edible phytoplankton and a higher abundance and biomass of benthic invertebrates, especially Chaoborus flavicans, and perch than low G. semen lakes. 3. The length distribution of fish also suggested a tendency towards large and older fish and a lower recruitment success in high G. semen lakes, as denoted by lower abundances of fish shorter than 10 cm and higher biomass and abundance of fish longer than 15 cm in high G. semen lakes. 4. This study shows that high G. semen lakes are characterised by less edible phytoplankton, dominance by a few species and enhanced benthic secondary and fish production. Hence, the conjecture that high biomasses of G. semen create a bottleneck in the energy transfer to higher trophic levels seems less likely in boreal lakes.  相似文献

The phytoplankton communities of eleven shallow lakes from Buenos Aires Province, Argentina, were studied seasonally from 1987 to 1989. Several physical and chemical properties were measured in each lake (pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, transparency, nutrients), in order to interpret the structural and dynamic traits of the phytoplankton community.Important differences between the lakes studied were put in evidence by means of multivariate techniques (Cluster Analysis and PCA). The shallow lakes densely populated by macrophytes hosted lowest phytoplanktonic densities, with average values ranging from 690 to 16500 algae ml–1. High species diversities were observed in these lakes (4.0–4.8). Lakes less colonized by macrophytes had higher phytoplankton densities. In some of them important blooms of Cyanophyceae were recorded, with between 60 000 and 179 000 algae ml–1, and concomitant low diversities. The results of this investigation support the hypothesis that the phytoplankton community is strongly influenced by the macrophytes, by direct competition and/or by competition from periphytic algae associated with higher plants.  相似文献

In this paper we report for the first time the results of histology of the golden loach (S. baltica) gonads (25 females and 8 males) and absolute fecundity of females from the Bug River during the reproductive season. The golden loach has an asynchronous ovary and spawns in batches. The absolute fecundity of the golden loach ranged from 1507 to 7220 eggs (3050±1377). We hypothesize that the golden loach spawns twice a year.  相似文献

We evaluated the variability of cyanotoxins, water chemistry, and cyanobacteria communities in two hypereutrophic drowned river mouth lakes (Spring Lake and Mona Lake; summer 2006) in west Michigan, USA. Even with considerable geographical and watershed similarity, local variations in nutrient concentrations and environmental factors were found to influence the differences observed in cyanobacteria assemblages and cyanotoxins levels between the two lakes. Limnothrix sp. dominated the phytoplankton community in Spring Lake (82% of biovolume) and was negatively correlated with total phosphorus (TP) concentrations. Although Spring Lake was treated with alum during the previous year, Limnothrix sp. was able to bloom in the lower P environment. In contrast, the N2-fixing cyanobacterium, Anabaena flos-aquae, dominated the phytoplankton in Mona Lake (64% of biovolume). N2-fixing cyanobacteria dominance in Mona Lake was correlated with higher TP lower dissolved nitrogen levels. Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii was found in both systems; however, the toxin-producing polyketide synthetase gene was not present in either population. The higher TP in Mona Lake appeared to account for the 3-fold increase in cyanobacteria biovolume. Restoration plans for both lakes should include assessments of internal loading and continued phytoplankton monitoring to track the temporal distribution of cyanobacteria species and cyanotoxin concentrations.  相似文献

The primary production and extracellular release by phytoplankton were measured at different depths of Miko?ajskie Lake, Ryńskie Lake and Be?dany Lake (Masurian Lake District, Poland). The release of dissolved organic compounds was found to be related to the rates of primary production. The percentage of extracellular release (PER) of organic matter in the photic zone showed an inverse relationship with particulate production and chlorophyll alpha concentration. The highest PER was determined in the epilimnion of the studied lakes, where also increased release was observed. The higher release of algal products of photosynthesis in the photic zone than in the profundal is probably caused by the inhibition of physiological activity of bacteria by antibacterial substances produced by algae. The substances released by algae in the profundal are taken up by aquatic bacteria which explains the lower release and PER measured.  相似文献

Floodplain lakes along the lower River Murray are subject to a wide range of human impacts including regulation, abstraction, elevated saline groundwater tables, increased nutrient and sediment fluxes and introduced biota. These perturbations are superimposed on those arising from high inter-annual rainfall variability, driven, at least in part, by variations in the southern oscillation. Sediment-based archives from two lakes within a complex of wetlands, situated near to the first site of irrigation development in the lower River Murray, reveal substantial changes over the last 800 years. While high levels of salinity are not foreign to the sites, the recent trend is towards sustained high salinity levels. As a result of European impact, freshwater diatom plankton now dominates Loch Luna, whilst Loveday Wetland is both more saline and nutrient rich than in the pre-European period. In Loveday Wetland, the post-1960 increase in Haslea spicula (Hickie) Lange-Bertalot, may be driven by increases in sulphur salt concentrations that are believed to be a cause of recent acidification episodes. A recent increase in more salt tolerant diatoms in Loch Luna suggests that this site, which has been largely buffered from substantial change, is becoming more vulnerable to perturbation.
