ABSTRACT. The hourly and quarter-hourly distribution of larval deposition by female Glossina morsitans Westw. was studied at various temperatures. At constant temperature and humidity, peak larviposition occurred 8–9 h after lights on. The effect of confining the flies to daily (LD 12:12 h) regimes of at least twenty-five consecutive cycles that included a sudden increase in temperature of c. 6°C for 2 h was a significant reduction in depositions during each period of increased temperature, and a significant increase before the heat impulse. When the temperature was allowed to fall rapidly, larviposition rate doubled in the following 15 min.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Observations on the nature and control of spontaneous flight activity in tsetse flies have so far been made only on G. m. morsitans Westw. This paper reports preliminary observations of the same kind on two other species: G. p. palpalis (R.-D.) and G. austeni Newst. The flight pattern of all three species consisted of short bursts of activity (usually lasting <1 min) separated by long intervals of rest, changes in activity level occurring exclusively as changes in the frequency of these flight bursts. In constant conditions in LD 12:12, G. palpalis and G. austeni were almost totally diurnal, with strongly predominant afternoon activity peaks, but a slight tendency to decrease activity around noon as occurs to a much greater extent in G. morsitans. This rhythm persisted in constant darkness (DD), but whereas in most G. morsitans only the morning peak was retained in DD, in G. palpalis and G. austeni it was only the afternoon peak. The loss of the afternoon peak in G. morsitans may be due to the very low activity levels in DD. Food deprivation led to increased activity in all three species, most markedly so in G. palpalis and G. austeni , in which the amount of activity per day increased c. ten-fold over three days' post-emergence starvation.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Direct observations on the spontaneous activity and visually-evoked responses of pregnant female Glossina morsitans morsitans Westw. were made hourly during the photophase over the 4 days around larviposition. Visual stimulation was by a 5-wide vertical black stripe moving laterally, 4 times min-1 at c. 5 s-1. The numbers of take-offs and the numbers of females taking off were recorded, both in response to the stimulus and spontaneously in its absence. The visual responsiveness paralled both the day-to-day changes and the altered circadian patterns of spontaneous activity reported previously (Brady & Gibson, 1983), being very low for the 48 h before parturition. It did not, however, rise in parallel with the increase in spontaneous activity during the last 3–4 h before parturition, and the proportion of flights oriented towards the moving stripe was also much reduced at that time. The significance of this changing responsiveness to slow movement is discussed, and its potential enhancement of any behavioural avoidance of aerosol, non-residual insecticide spraying during late pregnancy is noted.  相似文献

Effects of aging on the circadian rhythm of locomotor activity in males of Drosophila nasuta were investigated. The adult life of males was divided in 1-3 stages according to spontaneous changes in free-running period x in constant darkness (DD): stage 1, days 1-19; stage 2, days 20-36; stage 3, days 37-43. Stage 1 was characterized by a bimodal activity pattern with a short light-induced morning peak and a prolonged evening peak when the flies were entrained to light-dark cycles of 12 hours of light, 12 hours of darkness (LD 12:12). The morning peak had a phase angle difference Ψm (Ψ, the time from lights on in LD 12:12 cycles to the onset of morning peak) of about 0.1h, while Ψe (Ψ of evening peak) was about 9h at stage 1. The transient morning peak was curtailed at the end of stage 1. At stage 2, the Ψe was about 10h, and the activity end was delayed by an addition of about 3h of activity in the scotophase. The changes in W during DD free runs were determined in two groups of flies: flies reared in LD 12:12 and flies reared in DD. In both groups, W increased from about 23h at stage 1 to about 25h at stage 2. Stage 3 was characterized by arrhythmicity associated with highest mean activity level (total number of passes/fly/day) in the entrained and both free-running groups. The mean activity level increased significantly from stage 1 to stage 3 in all three groups of flies.  相似文献

The properties of the pacemaker controlling the adult locomotor activity rhythm of the high-altitude Himalayan (haH) strain (Hemkund Sahib, 4121 m above sea level) of Drosophila helvetica are strikingly different from those of the low-altitude Himalayan (laH) strain (Birahi, 1132 m above sea level) of the same species. The haH strain has a unimodal activity pattern with a delayed peak occurring about 4.5 h after lights-on of the entraining light-dark (LD) cycle, while the laH strain has a bimodal activity pattern with the morning and evening peaks. It is rather unusual for a wild type strain of any Drosophila species to have a unimodal activity pattern during entrainment as observed in the haH strain. The single activity peak of the haH strain is regarded as a consequence of delayed morning peak merging with the evening one. Three experiments were performed to test this hypothesis. The first experiment examined whether the single activity peak could be dissociated into two components by LD cycles in which photoperiods varied from 10 to 16 h per 24 h. The haH strain again exhibited a unimodal activity pattern with a delayed peak in 10, 12, and 14 h photoperiods but a bimodal activity pattern in 16 h photoperiod. The laH strain had bimodality in 10 and 12 h photoperiods, unimodality in a 14 h photoperiod, but complete arrhythmicity in a 16 h photoperiod. In the second experiment, the haH flies were transferred from LD 16:8 to LL at 5 lux to confirm whether the bimodality of this strain in LD 16:8 cycles was not the result of masking by the long photoperiod of 16 h. Bimodality of the haH strain persisted in LL too; moreover, the morning component free-ran with period (tau) <24 h, while the evening component free-ran with tau>24 h. The third experiment examined the LL-induced splitting of activity peak of the haH strain. Flies were transferred from LD 12:12 cycles to LL at 0, 1, 5, and 15 lux. The haH strain was rhythmic in LL at 0 and 1 lux with a unimodal activity pattern. It was also rhythmic in LL at 5 lux, but the single activity peak was split into two discrete components; the morning component free-ran with tau<24 h, while the evening component free-ran with tau>24 h. This strain, however, was completely arrhythmic in LL at 15 lux. The laH strain was uniformly arrhythmic in LL at all levels of light intensity. These results suggest that the single but late activity component of the haH strain during entrainment appears to be the consequence of merging the delayed morning peak with the evening one as an adaptation to the environmental conditions at the altitude of origin of this strain, where these flies begin activity in the forenoon owing to non-permissible low temperature in the morning.  相似文献

Abstract. Activity rhythms of Stomoxys calcitrans (L.) were assessed under constant conditions using actographs. In LD 12:12 h, activity was almost completely diurnal, had a 24 h period, and peaked 4 h after lights-on.In constant darkness, activity peaked in the early afternoon and the period of the rhythm was c. 26 h, indicating a circadian pacemaker.A delay in feeding shortened the free-running period in constant dark to c. 24 h.In constant light, flies were arrhythmic.Starvation also affected activity, with 24- and 48-h starved flies being as much as 20 times more active than recently fed flies.  相似文献

Abstract

Activity data from two experimental lizard groups were analysed in order to search for 24 h‐entrained and ultradian periodicities. The data of a first group were obtained through motion sensitive platforms situated under the animals’ cage and continuously for up to 12 consecutive days; those from a second group were collected by manual recording of the behaviour patterns of individual animals for 2 h each day over a 10‐day period. Lizards from both groups were situated in cages inside isolated chambers in which a light‐dark cycle (12:12), a temperature of 28°C ±1° and a relative humidity of 50–60% were maintained. Periodogram analysis showed the existence of a significant period peak (p < 0.01) at 24 h. Autocorrelation functions and spectral analysis of different data‐segment lengths showed that ultradian periodicities were present in the daily motor activity, appearing as noisy though frequency‐band limited. Differences in the frequency band‐limited fluctuations were found between morning and afternoon activities: during the morning ultradian activity appears distributed in two bands (4.5–36 c/day and 63–94 c/day), the power being mainly concentrated in the second one, while during the afternoon it was in the 4.5–36 c/day band. Results from the second lizard group showed only one band (24–60 c/day) overlapped with the first one from the latter group. Although activity recording methods and some experimental conditions are discussed as possible sources of these differences, the possibility of endogenous ultradian variation within the individuals is also suggested.  相似文献

The rhythms of locomotor activity of male and virgin or mated female flies were compared in the Drosophila melanogaster wild-type strains CantonS, Berlin, and OregonR. Under light-dark conditions, most flies showed a bimodal activity pattern with a morning peak around lights-on and an evening peak before lights-off. For all strains, a distinct sexual dimorphism was observed in the phase of the morning peak. Males had a significantly earlier morning peak than females and consequently a larger phase angle between morning and evening peak (psi(m, e)). Under constant dark conditions, the morning component merged with the evening component to a unimodal activity band in about half of the flies. In those flies who maintained bimodality, the sex-specific difference in psi(m, e) disappeared. Other sex-specific differences were now apparent: Males showed a shorter free-running period than females, and in two of the three strains, females were more active than males. Morning and evening components seem to contribute to the free-running period. Spontaneous or externally provoked change in psi(m, e) were correlated with period changes. In some flies, the morning and the evening components showed splitting, indicating that they are the output of two different oscillators. The sexual dimorphism in the phase of the morning peak under LD-conditions suggests that the function of activity during morning and evening peak might be different, for example, during the morning peak, males are active to find females. Overall, the results underline the multioscillatory nature of Drosophila's circadian system.  相似文献

Abstract. Tsetse flies Glossina morsitans morsitans Westwood and G. pallidipes Austen were marked and released within 12 h of emergence at Rekomitjie Research Station, Zambezi Valley, Zimbabwe, and on Redcliff Island, Lake Kariba. Ovarian dissections were performed on recaptured flies and on wild collected samples. At Rekomitjie >90% of female G. m. morsitans were inseminated by age 4 days and G. pallidipes by 7 days. For both species at both sites the length of the largest oocyte, for flies in ovarian category zero, increased approximately linearly for about the first 6 days and was ovulated at c. 6–8 days. The largest oocyte grew significantly more slowly in later cycles. For G. m. morsitans , but not for G. pallidipes , the rate increased with temperature; the rates were always higher than observed in the laboratory. At Rekomitjie, for both species and at a mean screen temperature of 22C, the first larva was produced at c. 18 days and subsequent larvae at 11–day intervals; the intervals decreased with temperature by c. 0.5 days/C. On Redcliff Island the intervals for both species were 2 days shorter than at Rekomitjie at any given screen temperature and were sometimes as short as 7 days. The length of the larva in utero increased exponentially during pregnancy.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The responses of male Glossina morsitans morsitans West-wood and Glossina pallidipes Austen to freeze-killed females were examined in the laboratory. Analyses were performed using a specially designed, automated, computer-based, recording system. G. pallidipes were more active than G. m. morsitans , interacting with the female decoys twice as often. Interactions with the decoys divided broadly into short-stay (<60 s) and long-stay, full copulatory attempts. For G. m. morsitans 90% of interactions resulted in full copulatory attempts, the mean duration of which was >1 h. For G. pallidipes only 40% of interactions resulted in full copulatory attempts, the mean duration of which was 35 min. The initiation of interactions showed a clear V-shaped activity pattern in G. m. morsitans but in G. pallidipes only a morning peak was observed. In neither species was there a tendency for full copulatory responses to be initiated in any specific period of the diurnal activity pattern. The results indicate that the two species have very different mating systems, and represent an initial step in the quantification of these differences.  相似文献

The activity of lectins in different species of tsetse was compared in vivo by the time taken to remove all trypanosomes from the midgut following an infective feed and in vitro by agglutination tests. Teneral male Glossina pallidipes Austen, G. austeni Newstead and G. p. palpalis R-D. removed 50% of all Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense Stephens & Fantham infections within 60 h. A 'refractory' line of G. m. morsitans Westwood took 170 h to kill 50% infections while a 'susceptible' line of the same species failed to kill 50%. Agglutination tests with midgut homogenates showed differences between fly stocks which accorded with differences in rate of trypanosome killing in vivo. Flies fed before an infective feed were able to remove trypanosomes from their midguts more quickly than flies infected as tenerals. Increasing the period of starvation before infection increased the susceptibility to trypanosome infection of non-teneral flies. Teneral flies showed little agglutinating activity in vitro, suggesting that lectin is produced in response to the bloodmeal. Feeding flies before infection also abolished the differences in rate of trypanosome killing found between teneral 'susceptible' and 'refractory' G. m. morsitans, suggesting that maternally inherited susceptibility to trypanosome infection is a phenomenon limited to teneral flies. Electron micrographs of midguts of G. m. morsitans suggest that procyclic trypanosomes are killed by cell lysis, presumably the result of membrane damage caused by lectin action.  相似文献

Tsetse flies Glossina pallidipes Austen and G. morsitans morsitans Westwood deposit their larvae in warthog burrows, in August-November, at Rekomitjie Research Station, Zambezi Valley, Zimbabwe. Artificial burrows, made from 200-l steel drums, were used to sample these flies and to collect their puparia. Sand-filled plastic trays in the burrows served as a substrate for larval deposition. The sand was covered with c. 2 cm of leaf litter after it was shown that only 3% of larvae were deposited on bare sand if both substrates were available. Other burrow modifications - artificially shading the burrow entrance, increasing the relative humidity inside the burrow, or reducing the size of the burrow entrance - significantly decreased deposition rates. The use of burrows in the hot season results in a reduction in the temperature experienced by the puparium towards an assumed optimum level of 26 degrees C. Artificial burrows maintained a mean temperature of 28.5 degrees C during October-November 1998, c. 2.5 degrees C cooler than ambient; earlier work has shown that natural burrows can be c. 5 degrees C cooler than ambient at these times. This may explain why natural burrows in full sunlight were used for larviposition, whereas artificial burrows were used only when they were in deep shade, and why significantly higher proportions of G. pallidipes were found in natural (66%) than in artificial burrows (34%). Better-insulated artificial burrows might produce more puparia with higher proportions of G. pallidipes. Burrows become waterlogged during the rains and may be too cool for optimum puparial development during the rest of the year. The percentages of G. m. morsitans in catches of females from artificial burrows, refuges and odour-baited traps were 34, 26 and < 10% respectively. Traps are biased in favour of G. pallidipes; artificial burrows may show a bias in favour of G. m. morsitans that is a function of temperature. Artificial warthog burrows provide a convenient way of studying the puparial stage in tsetse and for the first time facilitate the capture of females as they deposit their larvae.  相似文献

Winter activity patterns of 16 radio-marked capercaillie, Tetrao urogallus , were studied during 1981–83 at Varaldskogen, SE Norway. Activity was confined to the light hours of the day, closely following the photoperiod. Diel distribution showed a major peak near sunset during every month. A second peak was found in the morning. This peak was comparable to the evening peak in early and late winter, but nearly disappeared in midwinter. Ambient temperature rather than photoperiod seemed to be the important proximate factor responsible for the changes in morning activity. By postponing activity to the afternoon, capercaillie avoids energy expenditure during the coldest morning hours.
Total daily activity (TDA) during the period November-April averaged about 3 h for both sexes. TDA of cocks was U-shaped with the lowest values (2.0 h) in December-January, whereas TDA of hens was fairly stable during November-March with mean value of 2.7 h, increasing abruptly to 4 h in April. TDA during December-January is believed to express the time used for feeding in pine trees. The significantly higher TDA of hens (26%) compared with cocks during this period may be explained by a higher relative heat loss of hens (body weights: hens 2.0 kg, cocks 4.3 kg). The increased level of activity during early and late winter among cocks was probably due to display and related territorial behaviour, whereas increased activity of hens during April probably was caused by a shift from feeding in pines to more time-consuming, selective feeding on the ground  相似文献

Abstract. Midgut protease activity in Glossina morsitans centralis and G. m. morsitans , at 48h post bloodmeal averaged 1.8IU of trypsin-like activity. These two tsetse subspecies differ in their susceptibility to trypanosome infection. Except for low levels in flies fed on waterbuck blood (0.7IU), activity did not differ in flies fed a variety of host bloods (goat, pig, cow, buffalo, eland) and trypanosome species ( Trypanosoma congolense, T.brucei, T.simiae ). Protease activity was also not correlated with infection rates, despite large differences in infection rates among experiments. Nevertheless, addition of 0.06M D(+)-glucosamine to parasitaemic blood resulted in a three-fold reduction in protease activity, coincident with a large increase in infection rate. This effect did not occur when parasites or D(+)-glucosamine were added alone to the bloodmeal, suggesting that the effect was due to metabolism of D(+)-glucosamine by parasites.  相似文献

Measurement of plasma progesterone, LH and FSH were made every 6 h during the first 6 days of pregnancy in the mouse. Plasma progesterone and LH were low on day 1, minimum values being recorded at 24 h post coitus. Concentrations of both these hormones started rising during the second half on day 2 with the rise continuing during day 3 to a progesterone peak of 25 ng/ml early on day 4 and an LH peak of 37 ng/ml late on day 4. Levels of progesterone fell during day 4 and LH during day 5 to approximately half their respective peak values and then remained relatively constant over the remainder of the measurement period. Levels of FSH, which were high early on day 1 (180 ng/ml), fell sharply by midday with a small rise late in the day followed by a decline during day 2 to a minimum level of 2 ng/ml at 48 h post coitus. Early on day 3 FSH values rose to 120 ng/ml then fell to 50-60 ng/ml during the next 6 h and remained relatively stable at this level during days 4 and 5. It is suggested that LH is concerned with progesterone production and maintenance of the corpus luteum whilst FSH is concerned with the production of oestrogen required for implantation in this species.  相似文献

Population-based studies indicate the risk of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is greatest in the morning, during the initial hours of diurnal activity. The aim of this pilot study was to determine whether chronotype, i.e., morningness and eveningness, impacts AMI onset time. The sample comprised 63 morning- and 40 evening-type patients who were classified by the Horne-Östberg Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ) in the hospital after experiencing the AMI. The average wake-up and bed times of morning types were ~2?h earlier than evening types. Although the lag in time between waking up from nighttime sleep and AMI onset during the day did not differ between the two chronotypes, the actual clock-hour time of the peak in the 24-h AMI pattern did. The peak in AMI of morning types occurred between 06:01 and 12:00?h and that of the evening types between 12:01 and 18:00?h. Although the results of this small sample pilot study suggest one's chronotype influences the clock time of AMI onset, larger scale studies, which also include assessment of 24-h patterning of events in neither types, must be conducted before concluding the potential influence of chronotype on the timing of AMI onset. Abstract. Ovarian dissections were performed on the tsetse flies Glossina morsitans morsitans Westwood and G.pallidipes Austen of known ages, maintained in the laboratory or on an island in Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe. The lengths ( l 2 and l u) of the second largest oocyte and of the larva in utero were found to increase approximately exponentially during pregnancy. The length ( l 1) of the largest oocyte increased exponentially for about the first 80% of pregnancy. Linear relationships between the log values of l 1, l 2 and l u in field-caught flies, of unknown chronological age, are consistent with the idea that growth patterns are similar in laboratory, island and open field situations. The egg phase takes up c. 45% of pregnancy in both species, regardless of season and the absolute duration of pregnancy. The changes in the log values of l 1, l 2 and l u, over the ranges within which they change linearly, can be used to assign flies to their stage of pregnancy. When applied to field data the rule showed that G.pallidipes caught in odour-baited traps, and on a mobile electric net, exhibited major activity peaks shortly before and after parturition. Flies from the trap (but not the net) showed a smaller peak of activity near the middle of pregnancy. The egg and the three larval phases in utero take up c. 45%, 25%, 20% and 10% of pregnancy respectively.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The typical V-shaped pattern of biting activity that Glossina morsitans show in nature has been assumed to be due to environmental control (especially by temperature), but is now known also to be under control from an endogenous circadian clock. The relative importance of these two components was investigated (a) under constant conditions in actographs, and (b) by a re-analysis of published field data. The actograph study reveals: (1) the length of flight bursts is the same at all phases of the rhythm; (2) the shape of the circadian V-pattern changes with its amplitude, so that the less active a fly is, the more of its activity it performs in the morning; (3) both arms of the V respond to dawn as their principal zeitgeber; (4) high (35°C) and low (19°C) constant temperature reduce spontaneous activity level by c. 80%, and depress the evening arm of the V disproportionately. The analysis of the field data reveals: (1) the V occurs in nature independently of temperature; (2) biting activity is correlated positively with temperature in the morning and evening, but negatively through the middle of the day; (3) light directly influences the daily rhythm mainly by its effects at low intensity (the 'photonegative reaction' being a response to high temperature); (4) humidity has little influence on activity level. It is concluded that roughly 80% of the amplitude of the V-pattern in the field is due to endogenous circadian control, and only 20% to direct control by temperature.  相似文献

Fatty acid composition of lipids from adult Glossina morsitans was unaffected by an in vitro fed diet of cow blood which induces production of under-sized offspring compared to that of flies fed on a superior diet of pig blood. The commonest fatty acids were C16:0, C16:1 and C18:1 and only small differences in proportions were detected between virgin and pregnant females. Rate of lipid accumulation by males and females was the same and was unaffected by diet, but males achieved a maximum of 2.5 mg on day 9 while both virgin and fertilised females reached a maximum of 5,0 mg on day 14 of adult life. Lipid content of pregnant flies then fell to 3.0 mg on the day of larviposition and accumulation began again. A cow blood diet reduced the extent to which the lipids were utilised for larval growth and this was reflected in an altered secretory activity cycle in the female uterine gland. However, no effect on the growth of adult fat body was detectable in such flies. Mating and fertilisation, which influence reproductive events through activity of the endrocine system do not seem to affect the acquisition of lipid reserves by female Glossina. However, they clearly exert considerable influence over distribution of such reserves between fat body and uterine gland, which distribution is also affected by diet.  相似文献
