Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) and the capacity to store large quantities of water are thought to confer high water use efficiency (WUE) and survival of succulent plants in warm desert environments. Yet the highly variable precipitation, temperature and humidity conditions in these environments likely have unique impacts on underlying processes regulating photosynthetic gas exchange and WUE, limiting our ability to predict growth and survival responses of desert CAM plants to climate change. We monitored net CO2 assimilation (A net), stomatal conductance (g s), and transpiration (E) rates periodically over 2 years in a natural population of the giant columnar cactus Carnegiea gigantea (saguaro) near Tucson, Arizona USA to investigate environmental and physiological controls over carbon gain and water loss in this ecologically important plant. We hypothesized that seasonal changes in daily integrated water use efficiency (WUEday) in this constitutive CAM species would be driven largely by stomatal regulation of nighttime transpiration and CO2 uptake responding to shifts in nighttime air temperature and humidity. The lowest WUEday occurred during time periods with extreme high and low air vapor pressure deficit (D a). The diurnal with the highest D a had low WUEday due to minimal net carbon gain across the 24 h period. Low WUEday was also observed under conditions of low D a; however, it was due to significant transpiration losses. Gas exchange measurements on potted saguaro plants exposed to experimental changes in D a confirmed the relationship between D a and g s. Our results suggest that climatic changes involving shifts in air temperature and humidity will have large impacts on the water and carbon economy of the giant saguaro and potentially other succulent CAM plants of warm desert environments.  相似文献

This paper reviews the basics of a Sonoran Desert keystone cactus species, including the ecology of its establishment and high mortality, its association with nurse plants to provide ameliorated conditions for survival, and variability in longevity and reproduction over its range such as delayed reproduction in hotter and more arid populations where this delay is met with longer lifespans. The production of flowers, branches, and spines from areoles is reviewed, as well as current methods for estimating individual age despite great variability in growth rates, most notably linked to summer rainfall. Possible implications of anthropogenic influences that impact populations as well as global climate change are discussed as are implications for potential range shifts in the future. This paper also provides a table listing of over 100 birds, mammals, insects, reptiles, and other animal species that use Carnegiea and highlighting its keystone status.  相似文献

The host‐plant environment of phytophagous insects directly affects various aspects of an insect's life cycle. Interestingly, relatively few insect groups have specialized in the exploitation of plants in the Cactaceae family, potentially because of the chemical and ecological challenges imposed by these plants. The cactophilic Drosophila buzzatii Patterson & Wheeler, 1942 is a well‐studied model in evolutionary ecology, partially because of its ability to exploit toxic cactus hosts. Previous studies have shown a negative effect on performance when flies are reared in an alternative columnar cactus host of the genus Trichocereus, relative to its primary cactus host, Opuntia. These observations were attributed to the presence of alkaloids in Trichocereus tissues, a chemical deterrent to herbivores that indirectly affects Drosophila larvae; however, the putative toxic effect of alkaloids has never been tested directly in D. buzzatii. The present study is the first attempt to relate chemical extracts in Trichocereus terscheckii Britton & Rose, 1920 with detrimental effects on D. buzzatii. We assessed the effects of a crude alkaloid extract, rich in phenylethylamines, and a ‘non‐alkaloid fraction’ on viability and adult wing morphology. Our results indicate that rearing larvae on an artificial diet containing different concentrations of the crude alkaloid extract decreased pupal viability and adult size in a concentration‐dependent manner. We discuss the role of cactus alkaloids in the evolution of host‐plant use in cactophilic flies. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2013, 109 , 342–353.  相似文献

The objective of this study is to determine the height and age at which reproduction begins (i.e., production of flowers and fruits; the transition to adulthood) in the giant saguaro cactus (Carnegiea gigantea) in four geographically and environmentally distinct populations, and to relate observed variability to environmental differences. The onset of reproduction has been estimated at a height of 2.2 m in near optimal conditions. This value has been widely accepted and applied to populations in less optimal conditions, although variations under less ideal conditions have not been investigated. In addition, previous research has demonstrated that Carnegiea growth rates are highly variable over their range. Thus, even if 2.2 m is a consistent transition height to adulthood over their range, the age of individuals in different populations would be different. I investigate the age and height at which this transition occurs. The author sampled the heights of the shortest reproductive individuals and the tallest non-reproductive individuals to estimate the mean height of the onset of flowering in each of four locales in the northern Sonoran Desert. Using a previously published age-height-growth model, the mean age of the start of reproduction was also computed for the four sites. ANOVA and t-tests were used to compare the average transition to adulthood across sites by both age and height. Statistical results are robust and significant variations in the onset of reproduction are observed by both age and height across the four sites. Saguaro National Park and Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument individuals are transitioning to adulthood, on average, at younger ages and shorter heights than the other two locales. At the arid and marginal Kofa site, individuals that established during the regeneration peak of the late 1800s-early 1900s are only now becoming reproductive (individuals that established around 1899), while at Saguaro National Park, on average, individuals that established in the 1950s are already transitioning to adulthood. These results have implications for regeneration, particularly in marginal locales where regeneration is already limited.  相似文献

Summary Cereus peruvianus seedlings were used as a source of stem explants to determine the effective conditions for inducing and maintaining callus tissues in a state of rapid growth, as well as to obtain plants regenerated from callus cultures. Factorial combinations of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and kinetin in MS medium were tested, and we concluded that the 18.1µM 2,4-D and 18.6 or 27.9µM kinetin combinations were suitable for callus induction. The cactus shoots were produced from the friable callus; root elongation occurred within 2 wk in medium without 2,4-D and with 18.6µM kinetin. This method can be used to rapidly produce manyC. peruvianus plants.  相似文献

Aim The influence of winter temperatures and other climate variables are explored to determine which variables are associated with saguaro stem diameter and to determine if Bergmann's rule is applicable to saguaros. Location The northern Sonoran Desert in Arizona, USA. Methods Thirty saguaro populations were sampled (height, diameter, number of branches), and after adjustment for population height structure, mean relative thickness of saguaros was calculated for each plot (population). Fifty‐seven climate variables were calculated for the thirty populations. Regression was run to determine which variables (cold winter, hot summer and precipitation) best predict relative thickness. Previous studies have demonstrated a significant positive relationship between winter precipitation and saguaro branching ( Drezner, 2003 , Ecography, in press). To determine if relative thickness may be an artefact of branching (branches), partial correlation analysis was employed. Results Mean March precipitation best predicts relative thickness. When only winter temperature variables are considered, none are significantly related to relative thickness. Relative thickness is not an artefact of branches. Main conclusions (1) Rainfall, not temperature, best predicts saguaro stem thickness. In addition, despite the focus on summer rains in the literature, winter precipitation is the best predictor of thickness. (2) Bergmann's rule is not applicable to saguaro populations as has been previously suggested [e.g. Niering et al. (1963) Science 142 , 15], as thickness does not increase significantly with latitude. In addition, the suggested mechanism for Bergmann's rule, cold winter temperature, does not significantly predict saguaro stem diameters over the area studied. In some populations that experience high winter rainfall as well as cold temperatures, individuals likely derive thermal benefits from a larger stem diameter; however, the trend is not observed over the area studied and it does not appear to be adaptive.  相似文献
