Natural selection is a major force in the evolution of vertebrate brain size, but the role of sexual selection in brain size evolution remains enigmatic. At least two opposing schools of thought predict a relationship between sexual selection and brain size. Sexual selection should facilitate the evolution of larger brains because better cognitive abilities may aid the competition for mates. However, it may also restrict brain size evolution due to energetic trade‐offs between brain tissue and sexually selected traits. Here, we examined the patterns of selection on brain size and brain anatomy in male anurans (frogs and toads), a group where the strength of sexual selection differs markedly among species, using a phylogenetically controlled generalized least‐squared (PGLS) regression analyses. The analysis revealed that in 43 Chinese anuran species, neither mating system, nor type of courtship, or testes mass was significantly associated with relative brain size. While none of those factors related to the relative size of olfactory nerves, optic tecta, telencephalon, and cerebellum, the olfactory bulbs were relatively larger in monogamous species and those using calls during courtship. Our findings support the mosaic model of brain evolution and suggest that while the investigated aspects of sexual selection do not seem to play a prominent role in the evolution of brain size of anurans, they do impact their brain anatomy.  相似文献

Abstract. Distributions of species along a freshwater habitat gradient, ranging from ephemeral pools with few predators to permanent lakes with fish, have been used to infer how predation establishes trade-offs that promote ecological specialization. Larval anurans are said to support the trade-off model, but there are few comparable and quantitative habitat data available to assess this claim. I performed a survey of field biologists to evaluate the habitats of similar sets of species in the northern parts of Europe (40 respondents and 12 species) and eastern North America (30 respondents and 8 species), using a standard set of criteria. For six European species I also had quantitative field sampling data, and found close agreement between survey results and predator densities experienced by tadpoles in the field. Distributions of most species were restricted to only part of the habitat gradient, as expected under the trade-off model. The survey confirmed reports that North Ameri-can Rana species replace one another along the gradient, but this was not true in Europe. European Rana were no different from the North American species in their seasonal and geographical overlap, so the absence of habitat partitioning in European Rana may result from interactions with other species or the special impact of glaciation in Europe. Habitats were unrelated to evolutionary relationships among species, suggesting that changes in habitat evolve quickly. The survey approach was useful for comparing distributions of species, and for generating hypotheses about evolutionary responses to habitat gradients.  相似文献

Invasive species can affect the ecosystems they colonize by modifying the behaviour of native taxa; for example, avoidance of chemical cues from the invader may modify habitat use (shelter site selection) by native species. In laboratory trials, we show that metamorphs of most (but not all) native frog species on a tropical Australian floodplain avoid the scent of invasive cane toads (Bufo marinus Linnaeus 1758). Cane toads also avoid conspecific scent. This response might reduce vulnerability of metamorph frogs and toads to larger predatory toads. However, similar avoidance of one type of pungency control (garlic), and the presence of this avoidance behaviour in frogs at the toad invasion front (and hence, with no prior exposure to toads), suggest that this may not be an evolved toad‐specific response. Instead, our data support the simpler hypothesis that the metamorph anurans tend to avoid shelter sites that contain strong and unfamiliar scents. Temporal and spatial differences in activity of frogs versus toads, plus the abundance of suitable retreat sites during the wet season (the primary time of frog activity), suggest that avoiding toad scent will have only a minor impact on the behaviour of native frogs. However, this behavioural impact may be important when environmental conditions bring toads and frogs into closer contact.  相似文献

Translocated from their native range in the Americas in 1935, cane toads (Rhinella marina, Bufonidae) have now spread through much of tropical and subtropical Australia. The toad's invasion and impact have attracted detailed study. In this paper, I review information on ecological interactions between cane toads and Australian anurans. The phylogenetic relatedness and ecological similarity between frogs and toads creates opportunities for diverse interactions, ranging from predation to competition to parasite transfer, plus a host of indirect effects mediated via impacts of toads on other species, and by people's attempts to control toads. The most clear‐cut effect of toads on frogs is a positive one: reducing predator pressure by fatally poisoning anuran‐eating varanid lizards. However, toads also have a wide range of other effects on frogs, some positive (e.g. taking up parasites that would otherwise infect native frogs) and others negative (e.g. eating frogs, poisoning frogs, competing with tadpoles). Although information on such mechanisms predicts intense interactions between toads and frogs, field surveys show that cane toad invasion has negligible overall impacts on frog abundance. That counter‐intuitive result is because of a broad balancing of negative and positive impacts, coupled with stochastic (weather‐induced) fluctuations in anuran abundance that overwhelm any impacts of toads. Also, the impacts of toads on frogs differ among frog species and life‐history stages, and depend upon local environmental conditions. The impacts of native frogs on cane toads have attracted much less study, but may well be important: frogs may impose biotic resistance to cane toad colonization, especially via competition in the larval phase. Overall, the interactions between native frogs and invasive toads illustrate the diverse ways in which an invader's arrival can perturb the native fauna by both direct and indirect mechanisms, and by which the native species can curtail an invader's success. These studies also offer a cautionary tale about the difficulty of predicting the impact of an invasive species, even with a clear understanding of mechanisms of direct interaction.  相似文献

5-lipoxygenase and atherosclerosis   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
PURPOSE OF REVIEW: 5-Lipoxygenase (5LO) was recently identified as a gene that makes an important contribution to atherosclerosis in mice and humans, but the underlying mechanism(s) remains unknown. RECENT FINDINGS: Studies of the 5LO pathway in other disease areas suggest that 5LO could contribute to atherosclerosis at different levels, such as lesion initiation, growth and cellular proliferation within the lesion, and/or destabilization of plaques that can lead to their rupture. SUMMARY: Recent advances in our understanding of how 5LO is involved in the atherosclerotic process will have important implications for diagnostic and therapeutic strategies in the future.  相似文献

5-lipoxygenase and FLAP   总被引:15,自引:0,他引:15
The initial steps in the biosynthesis of leukotrienes from arachidonic acid are carried out by the enzyme 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO). In intact cells, the helper protein 5-LO activating protein (FLAP) is necessary for efficient enzyme utilization of endogenous substrate. The last decade has witnessed remarkable progress in our understanding of these two proteins. Here we review the molecular and cellular aspects of the expression, function, and regulation of 5-LO and FLAP.  相似文献

The sulfhydryl reactant N-ethylmaleimide (NEM) stimulates the release and cyclooxygenase metabolism of arachidonic acid in rat alveolar macrophages. Because both 5-lipoxygenation and leukotriene (LT) C4 synthesis represent sulfhydryl-dependent steps in the 5-lipoxygenase pathway, we examined the effect of NEM on 5-lipoxygenase, as well as cyclooxygenase, metabolism in resting and agonist-stimulated cells by reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography and radioimmunoassay. NEM at 5-10 microM stimulated the synthesis of thromboxane, but not prostaglandin E2 or the 5-lipoxygenase products LTC4, LTB4, or 5-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid from endogenously released arachidonate. In the presence of exogenous fatty acid, however, NEM stimulated the synthesis of large quantities of LTB4. The effect of NEM on arachidonate metabolism stimulated by the calcium ionophore A23187 and the particulate zymosan was also investigated. NEM augmented arachidonate release and thromboxane synthesis stimulated by A23187 but inhibited A23187-induced LTC4 synthesis with an IC50 of approximately 4.3 microM. This inhibitory effect closely paralleled the ability of NEM to deplete intracellular glutathione (IC50 approximately 4.3 microM). Preincubation with the intracellular cysteine delivery agent L-2-oxothiazolidine-4-carboxylate augmented intracellular glutathione concentration and A23187-stimulated LTC4 synthesis and attenuated the capacity of NEM to deplete glutathione and inhibit LTC4 synthesis. While LTB4 and 5-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic synthesis were unaffected at these low NEM concentrations, LTB4 synthesis was inhibited at high concentrations (IC50 approximately 210 microM). Zymosan-induced eicosanoid synthesis was modulated by NEM in a similar fashion. Thus, NEM is an agonist of arachidonate metabolism with the capacity to modulate the spectrum of macrophage-derived eicosanoids by virtue of specific biochemical interactions with substrates and enzymes of the 5-lipoxygenase pathway.  相似文献

The serum concentration of circulating somatomedins was measured in the blood of healthy donors and subjects with hepatic cirrhosis, and in culture media from in vitro explants of healthy and cirrhotic human liver. Serum levels of somatomedin bioactivity were significantly lower in cirrhotic subjects (0.42 +/- 0.03 U/ml; M +/- SEM) compared with age matched controls (0.99 +/- 0.03 U/ml). Radioreceptor assay of somatomedin concentrations confirmed this reduction in cirrhotic patients (0.89 +/- 0.06 U/ml) compared with controls (1.32 +/- 0.05 U/ml). A parallel reduction in somatomedin circulating binding ability was also observed (99.43 +/- 7.28% in cirrhotic and 123.5% +/- 10.8% in normal subjects). In vitro explants from normal human liver tissue produced a significant increase (0.57 +/- 0.09 U/ml) in somatomedin bioactivity contained in the medium (0.29 +/- 0.06 U/ml), while a decreased bioactivity (0.12 +/- 0.06 U/ml) was observed with explants of cirrhotic livers. These results support a role of liver in the biosynthesis of both somatomedin and somatomedin binding protein.  相似文献

Leukotrienes (LTs) and prostanoids (Ps) were detected in sputum of patients with chronic bronchitis and/or bronchiectasis (CB/B) using selective superfusion bioassay and radioimmunoassay (RIA) techniques. Analysis of sputum extracts showed a 4-fold increase in the level of LTB4 compared to the cysteinyl-containing LTs (LTC4/LTD4). The measurement of cyclo-oxygenase products (COPs) indicated relatively greater amounts of the vasodilator prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and prostacyclin (PGI2) compared to the vasoconstrictor prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2 alpha) and thromboxane A2 (TxA2) agents (70:30% of total COPs respectively). The presence of eicosanoids (LTs and Ps) in sputum of patients with CB/B suggest that these biologically active substances may act as mediators of bronchoconstriction and inflammation in these diseases.  相似文献
