Specimens of a previously undescribed oligochaete from the Bay of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil were determined to belong to a new family of microdiles within the order Tubificida, suborder Enchytraeina. The specimens are characterized by dorsal and ventral hair setae, spermathecae in VII, testes in XI, ovaries in XII, and a clitellum. The number of primitive characters present in the new species indicate that it is a primitive member of the order that diverged early from the evolutionary line leading to the Enchytraeidae.  相似文献

In some marine algae cultivated axenically in the artificial medium ASP6 F2 (pH 8.3) vanadium at 1–100 g l-1 increases the fresh weight. In the multicellular brown algaFucus spiralis 10 g V I-1 enhances the fresh weight by about 400% while in the green algaEnteromorpha compressa the yield is increased by 90%. Red algae do not respond to vanadium. InFucus morphological effects are displayed in more frequent branching and/or broader blades. No significant increase in the chlorophyll content could be demonstrated at the early stage at which these morphological effects first appeared. Later the chlorophyll content increased.  相似文献

The presence of algae within the cases ofAgapetus fuscipes was investigated. Cases recognised as dirty or clean with the naked eye had more and less algal growth, respectively. Larvae in the former survived significantly longer when starved in the laboratory. It is suggested that the presence of algae within the cases would be of ecological advantage during periods of flood.  相似文献

Summary High concentrations of proteinaceous crystalloids accumulate in vegetative cells of the red algaWrangelia plumosa Harvey but disappear prior to sporogenesis. The distinctly structured crystalloids lack a bounding membrane and appear to autopolymerize within the cytoplasm. Chemical analysis of isolated crystalloids showed the presence of all amino acids except cysteine and cysteic acid. Carbohydrate accounted for 7.5% of the preparation. At densities of 500–9 000 cells/ml, the planktonic alga Chrysochromulina breviturrita Nich. produced obnoxious lake-wide odours in five lakes between 1978 and 1980. In one case, CuSO4 was used to kill the organism and control the odour, but in the other four lakes, the species persisted for 4–6 weeks before populations declined and odours disappeared. This is the first recorded instance of odour production by any member of the Prymnesiophyceae.  相似文献

The factors influencing the seasonal dynamics of Daphnia in a thermally stratified lake (Esthwaite Water) are described and related to long-term changes in the weather. The Daphnia produced three cohorts in the year and the strength of the cohorts was determined by year-to-year variations in the physical characteristics of the lake and the abundance of edible algae. Food was most abundant in early summer when small, fast-growing flagellates were particularly common. In late summer, the phytoplankton community was dominated by large, inedible species but edible forms re-appeared when nutrients were entrained by wind mixing. Examples are presented to demonstrate the effect that year-to-year variations in the weather have on the growth of the phytoplankton and the dynamics of the Daphnia. In ‘good’ years, when the lake stratifies early and there are periods of episodic mixing in summer, there are two ‘pulses’ of edible algae and two strong cohorts of Daphnia. In ‘bad’ years when stratification is delayed and there is little episodic mixing, the growth of the edible algae is suppressed and the Daphnia produce two weak cohorts. The results are discussed in relation to the impact of intermediate disturbances on growth of phytoplankton and current theories of population regulation in Daphnia. The evidence suggests that the dynamics of the Daphnia in the lake are strongly influenced by seasonal variations in the mixing regime, the recycling of nutrients and the episodic growth of edible algae.  相似文献

The development of male gametes (spermacia) in the red alga Gracilaria verrucosa has been studied using methods of transmission electron microscopy. Early spermatangia located along the wall of the conceptacle show an elongated shape in the thin sections. In the central part of the electron-dense cytoplasm of these cells there is a nucleus; numerous fibrous vesicles are arranged in the periphery. During the process of differentiation, the spermatangia become more rounded in shape and a large spermatangial vesicle is developed. The subsequent development of spermatium is accompanied by polarization of the spermatangium and the subsequent excretion of the spermatangial vesicle. The spermatia are oval cells containing a nucleus and fibrous vesicles. The process of differentiation of male gametes in G. verrucosa does not differ from that in five species of the genus Gracilaria, where it has already been studied. However, any conclusions about the degree of similarity between the spermatia in all the studied species can be made only after a detailed comparative analysis of the ultrastructural characteristics of these gametes.  相似文献

Two species of Gelidium, provisionally referred to as G. pusillum and G. latifolium, are included in the Scandinavian flora and reach their northern limit of distribution on the Norwegian west coast. Small frond sizes due to adverse growth conditions, extreme phenotypic variability and lack of sexual reproduction make identification of specimens very difficult. Both species were isolated into unialgal culture and were compared with cultured strains referable to G. pusillum from Ireland and France. Temperature and salinity requirements and tolerance ranges were determined and discussed in view of distribution along the Norwegian coast. Little or no growth occurs below 9 °C, corresponding to a northern summer growth limit. On the Norwegian Skagerrak coast, low winter temperature rather than reduced salinity is the limiting factor.  相似文献

The treatment of green algae Chlorococcum lobatum with the herbicide BASTA containing phosphinothricin lead to a significant decrease in the level of peak M2 of the chlorophyll fluorescence induction curve. This agrees with the suggestion that glutamine synthetase activity affects this region of the induction curve. Addition ofl-methionine-dl-sulphoximine to cells ofCyanidium caldarium brings about a loss of glutamine synthetase activity. Concomitantly ammonia assimilation is prevented.Under physiological conditions nitrate reductase [NAD(P)H: nitrate oxidoreductase EC 1.6.6.2] is reversibly converted into an inactive enzyme upon addition of ammonia. In the presence of methionine sulphoximine, when glutamine synthetase activity is lost, nitrate reductase is no longer inactivated by ammonia. Clonal variability in exponential growth rate and production of secondary metabolites was determined from clonal isolates of Alexandrium tamarense originating from a single geographical population from the east coast of Scotland. To assess variability in the selected phenotypic characteristics over a wide spectrum, 10 clones were chosen for experimentation from 67 clonal isolates pre-screened for their lytic capacity in a standardized bioassay with the cryptophyte Rhodomonas salina. Specific growth rates (μ) of the 10 clonal isolates ranged from 0.28 to 0.46 d−1 and were significantly different among clones. Cell content (fmol cell−1) and composition (mol%) of paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs), analyzed by liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection (LC–FD), varied widely among these isolates, with total PST quotas ranging from 20 to 89 fmol cell−1. Except for strain 3, the toxins C1/C2, neosaxitoxin (NEO), saxitoxin (STX), and gonyautoxins-1 and -4 (GTX1/GTX4), were consistently the most relatively abundant, with lesser amounts of GTX2/GTX3 evident among all isolates. Only clone 3 contained >20 mol% of toxin B1, with C1/C2, GTX2/GTX3 and NEO in almost equimolar ratios.Eight of the 10 clones caused cell lysis of both R. salina and the heterotrophic dinoflagellate Oxyrrhis marina, as quantified from the dose–response curves from short-term (24 h) co-incubation bioassays. For two clones, no significant mortality even at high Alexandrium cell concentrations (ca. 104 mL−1) was observed. Allelochemical activity expressed as EC50 values, defined as the Alexandrium cell concentration causing lysis of 50% of target cells, varied by about an order of magnitude and was significantly different among clones. No correlation was observed between growth rate und allelochemical potency (as EC50) indicating that at least under non-limiting growth conditions no obvious growth reducing costs are associated with the production of allelochemically active secondary metabolites.  相似文献

An infection of the great European spruce bark beetle Dendroctonus micans (from Turkey) by the parasitic green alga Helicosporidium is described. This is the first time that Helicosporidium has been found to infect a bark beetle (Scolytidae) and the first time that a naturally infected beetle has been reported for the Eurasian continent. The typical cysts of Helicosporidium contain three ovoid cells and one helical, filamentous cell. The morphological characteristics are revealed by light and electron microscopy. Distinct electron-dense inclusions with a peculiar ultrastructure may represent pyrenoids. Since D. micans is an important pest, the discovery of a natural pathogen may offer a chance for biological control.  相似文献

In a eutrophic lake, a crash of the algal population was followed by a significant increase in the number of virus-like particles (from ca. 1 106 ml–1 to ca. 26 106 ml–1), and soon thereafter by an increase of the amount of extracellular DNA (from ca. 20 µg l–1 to ca. 40 µg l–1). The same pattern of correlation between decrease of algae and increase of viruses and extracellular DNA could be demonstrated by an in vitro experiment with a Chlorella-virus-system. Lysis of algae by viruses increased both the number of viruses and the amount of DNA in the culture medium. Extracellular DNA mainly consisted of material with a molecular weight below 500 bp.The Chlorella-virus-system is discussed. It could be used as a model-system for studying the dynamics of interaction of viruses and algae in aquatic ecosystems.  相似文献

  1. Aquatic macrophytes formed dense beds in fallow areas during the four and a half months of the flood season in all but one deepwater rice-growing location in Bangladesh; these included several types of life-form, but the fine-leaved species, Myriophyllum sp., Najas indica, Utricularia stellaris were often especially abundant. The same species grew inside deepwater rice fields, but at much lower densities. A similar contrast occurred for the algae, although deepwater rice often developed dense masses of epiphytes on aquatic roots, stems and leaf sheaths, when plants were growing in isolated, well-illuminated situations.
  2. Two widespread algae, Aulosira fertilissima and Scytonema mirabile, were equally successful on soil in the period prior to the arrival of floodwaters and floating on the surface of the water during the flood season. Other species common during the flood season differed from those common on soil.
  3. Most blue-green algae inside deepwater rice fields were heterocystous; the only species not so, but forming distinct colonies, was Aphanothece stagnina. However only non-heterocystous forms were found at one location in south Bangladesh (Phaltita) and a change from heterocystous to non-heterocystous forms was noted at the main research site (near Sonargaon) during late September in at least one year. The water column at the former was almost entirely anoxic, while the change at the latter occurred at a time when the water sometimes became anoxic during the night. It is suggested that differences in ability to tolerate anoxic periods may be a key factor in determining the success of the algal and vascular plant species in the different micro-habitats within these DWR-growing areas.
  4. Although diatoms were quantitatively only a minor component of the algal biomass, they became more frequent later in the season when the water became microaerobic or anoxic for part of the day. Navicula confervacea was overall the most abundant species at the two main research locations.

Twenty-four specimen of macroalgae were collected in nearshore waters of the island of Hawaii, identified, and maintained to examine how the epiphytic relationship between Gambierdiscus toxicus (isolate BIG12) varied among the macroalgal species. Gambierdiscus cells were introduced to Petri dishes containing 100 g samples of each macroalgal host, which were examined at two, 16, 24, and every 24–72 h thereafter, over a 29-day period. Gambierdiscus proliferated in the presence of some host species (e.g., Galaxaura marginata and Jania sp.), but grew little in the presence of other species (e.g., Portieria hornemannii). Gambierdiscus exhibited high survival rates (>99%) in the presence of Chaetomorpha sp., but died before the end of the experiment (after 21 days) with other host species (e.g., Dictyota and Microdictyon spp.). Gambierdiscus avoided contact with P. hornemannii, but averaged up to 30% attachment with other host species. The numbers of Gambierdiscus cells belonging to one of three classes (alive and attached; alive and unattached; and dead) were determined for each time point. The 24 algal hosts were grouped according to their commonalities relative to these three classes using a Bray-Curtis similarity index, similarity profile (SIMPROF) permutation tests, and Multi-Dimensional Scaling (MDS) analysis (PRIMER 6). The resultant six groupings were used to construct different Gambierdiscus growth profiles for the different algal hosts. Group A is characterized by a preponderance of unattached cells and high mortality rates. Groups B, C, E, and F also displayed high proportions of unattached cells, but mortality either occurred later (Groups B and C) or rates were lower (Groups E and F). Group D had the highest proportion of attached cells. Group E contained three out of the four chlorophyte species, while Group F contained the majority of the rhodophytes. Over 50% of the species in Group F are considered to be palatable, whereas Groups A, B, and C are composed of species that exhibit chemical defenses against herbivory. The results of this study coupled with previous findings indicate that Gambierdiscus is not an obligate epiphyte; it can be free-swimming and found in the plankton. The conditions that lead to changes between epiphytic and planktonic stages need to be better studied in order to determine how they affect Gambierdiscus growth and physiology, connectivity and dispersion mechanisms, and toxin movement up into the foodweb.  相似文献

We investigated seasonal changes in the density of epiphytic cladocerans Alona spp. (Chydoridae, Anomopoda) in two habitats, emergent and submerged aquatic plants, in Lake Suwa, Japan, from April to August 1998 and from April to November 2000. Alona had a density peak in early June on reeds (emergent) and in late June on Potamogeton malaianus (submerged). In summer, Alona density remained low in both habitats. Although density was positively correlated with the abundance of epiphytic algae, the birth rate was constant and no correlation between algal abundance and clutch size was detected. In a field experiment using ropes as an artificial substrate covered with high and low densities of epiphytic algae as food, more Alona attached to the ropes with the high density of algae. These results suggest that Alona may select food-rich habitats and migrate seasonally, and that migration is an important factor in the population dynamics of epiphytic chydorid cladocerans such as Alona. In Lake Suwa, Alona may migrate from the reed zone to the submerged macrophyte zone in June.  相似文献

Summary Due to recent interest in the significance of multilayered structures (MLSs) and MLS-like structures in green algal and land plant systematics and evolution, the putative MLSs ofTrentepohlia aurea swarmers were re-examined using conventional TEM of serial thin sections, and high-voltage electron microscopy (HVEM) of thick sections. Features not previously reported to occur in trentepohlialean algae include a structure connecting MLSs to adjacent basal bodies, the lamellar nature of the sub-microtubular layer of the MLS, and the presence of appendages on microtubules overlying the lamellar strip. Reasons are given for concluding that the MLSs ofTrentepohlia and other members of theTrentepohliales are possibly homologous to MLSs ofGlaucophyceae and the MLS-like structures ofFriedmannia. It is proposed that increased attention to the details of MLS structure may be crucial to an understanding of the divergence of main lines of green algal evolution.  相似文献

Cystocarpic and sterile plants of Gigartina skottsbergii produce -carrageenans, while tetrasporophytes produce -carrageenans. No seasonal variation in the carrageenan yields in the three stages was evident. Yields were clearly higher in cystocarpic (34.1–64.7%) and sterile samples (32.3–71.8%) than in tetrasporic plants (10.1–34.0%).
