A detector dog for screwworms (Diptera: Calliphoridae)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A male German wirehaired pointer, Canis familiaris L., was trained to search for and locate screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel); pupae; and animals infested with screwworms. The command, "find it" led to the detection of a screwworm-infested animal and the command "search" led to the detection of screwworm pupae. After approximately 5 mo of training, the dog could detect screwworm-infested animals. After 3 mo more of training, the dog could detect screwworm pupae. Through 7 August 1989, the dog had a success rate of 100% (265 tests) with training dummies and 94.7% (18 successes for 19 tests) with screwworm-infested animals, for an overall success rate of 99.7% (285 successes for 286 tests). Use of detector dogs at quarantine stations could result in increased efficiency, economic savings, and decreased possibility of reintroduction of screwworms into eradicated areas.  相似文献

Clustering multiple devices to form a single powerful device is a common method for improving performance. Most designs of the clustering schemes in the current literature are deploying a traffic splitter in front of devices in the cluster which acts as a centralized job dispatcher splitting workloads to backend devices. In this paper, we propose a decentralized clustering scheme, with no traffic splitter deployed, as an alternative solution on building a cluster system for those devices configured in transparent mode, such as bandwidth controllers, NIPSs, and traffic monitors. Devices in the cluster process the network traffic in parallel in a decentralized manner to scale the throughput. A device can also migrate its workload to others for the purpose of load balance or fault tolerance. Experiment results suggest that the proposed scheme can effectively improve performance of transparent mode devices in terms of throughput, load balance, and fault tolerance.  相似文献

A submicroliter electrochemical detector for liquid chromatography has been designed, using pressure-annealed pyrolytic graphite technology. The analytical performance of this detector was studied in connection with a reversed-phase packed microcapillary column at very low flow-rates. Although the miniaturized version of the electrochemical detector is less sensitive, a direct analysis of a number of urinary metabolites in 0.1–1.0 μl samples is feasible.  相似文献

In modern X-ray computed tomography (CT) a trend to increased volume coverage by using multi-row detectors is apparent. Flat-panel detector CT (FPD-CT) systems provide an even larger field of measurement which, however, results in an increased scatter fraction. We investigated the scatter intensities registered in the case of FPD-CT. A hybrid model for the simulation of scatter combining deterministic and Monte Carlo methods was used for the scatter calculations. The influence of imaging parameters on the registered scatter intensity was examined both in single projections and reconstructed images. Scatter-to-primary ratios (SPRs) are given for various values of object thickness, field size, object-to-detector distance, incident energy and projection angle. For the simulations, homogeneous water phantoms and realistic patient data sets were used to produce scatter data representative for clinical situations. The SPR increases with object size, collimation and z-extent resulting in SPR  1 and respective scatter artifacts in the reconstructed images. In contrary, the scatter intensity decreases non-linearly with the object-to-detector distance. The angular and spatial distributions of scatter form a flat function as compared to the distribution of the primary signal. Single scatter appears to determine the distribution and magnitude of the total-scatter intensity at the detector.  相似文献

Conditioned reflex is characterized by plasticity resulting in a bilateral selective input-output linking. In simple nervous systems, input stimuli are represented by selective detectors connected with command neurons through plastic synapses strengthened during associative learning and weakened during extinction. The process of associative learning is due to temporal coincidence of excitation in both detector and command neurons. Short-term memory within a plastic synapses is mediated by phosphorilation of postsynaptic receptor molecules not requiring protein synthesis. Long-term synaptic memory parallels expression of immediate early genes that mediates structural gene expression and protein synthesis. A simple detector-command neuron association becomes more complex in the course of evolution. Input mechanism is supplemented with predetector interneurons preceding detectors. Detector selectively tuned to specific input stimulus is converging on a command neuron constitute selectivity mechanism for conditioned reflexes to complex stimuli. The complication also concerns the output mechanisms. Command neurons become more specialized, and an additional link of premotor interneurons is incorporated between command neurons and motor neurons. Via synapses, the command neurons can produce excitation in a particular set of premotor neurons controlling a specific set of motor neurons responsible for behavioral act configuration. Specialization of command neurons in combination with premotor neuron structures increases the variability of outputs. Conditioned reflexes with more complex inputs and more flexible outputs determine the diversity of acquired behaviors.  相似文献

Advances in virtualization technology have focused mainly on strengthening the isolation barrier between virtual machines (VMs) that are co-resident within a single physical machine. At the same time, a large category of communication intensive distributed applications and software components exist, such as web services, high performance grid applications, transaction processing, and graphics rendering, that often wish to communicate across this isolation barrier with other endpoints on co-resident VMs. State of the art inter-VM communication mechanisms do not adequately address the requirements of such applications. TCP/UDP based network communication tends to perform poorly when used between co-resident VMs, but has the advantage of being transparent to user applications. Other solutions exploit inter-domain shared memory mechanisms to improve communication latency and bandwidth, but require applications or user libraries to be rewritten against customized APIs—something not practical for a large majority of distributed applications. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of a fully transparent and high performance inter-VM network loopback channel, called XenLoop, in the Xen virtual machine environment. XenLoop does not sacrifice user-level transparency and yet achieves high communication performance between co-resident guest VMs. XenLoop intercepts outgoing network packets beneath the network layer and shepherds the packets destined to co-resident VMs through a high-speed inter-VM shared memory channel that bypasses the virtualized network interface. Guest VMs using XenLoop can migrate transparently across machines without disrupting ongoing network communications, and seamlessly switch between the standard network path and the XenLoop channel. In our evaluation using a number of unmodified benchmarks, we observe that XenLoop can reduce the inter-VM round trip latency by up to a factor of 5 and increase bandwidth by a up to a factor of 6.

ObjectiveTo investigate the dosimetric behaviour, influence on photon beam fluence and error detection capability of Delta4 Discover transmission detector.MethodsThe transmission detector (TRD) was characterized on a TrueBeam linear accelerator with 6 MV beams. Linearity, reproducibility and dose rate dependence were investigated. The effect on photon beam fluence was evaluated in terms of beam profiles, percentage depth dose, transmission factor and surface dose for different open field sizes. The transmission factor of the 10x10 cm2 field was entered in the TPS’s configuration and its correct use in the dose calculation was verified recalculating 17 clinical IMRT/VMAT plans. Surface dose was measured for 20 IMRT fields. The capability to detect different delivery errors was investigated evaluating dose gamma index, MLC gamma index and leaf position of 15 manually modified VMAT plans.ResultsTRD showed a linear dependence on MU. No dose rate dependence was observed. Short-term and long-term reproducibility were within 0.1% and 0.5%. The presence of the TRD did not significantly affect PDDs and profiles. The transmission factor of the 10x10 cm2 field size was 0.985 and 0.983, for FF and FFF beams respectively. The 17 recalculated plans met our clinical gamma-index passing rate, confirming the correct use of the transmission factor by the TPS. The surface dose differences for the open fields increase for shorter SSDs and greater field size. Differences in surface dose for the IMRT beams were less than 2%. Output variation ≥2%, collimator angle variations within 0.3°, gantry angle errors of 1°, jaw tracking and leaf position errors were detected.ConclusionsDelta4 Discover shows good linearity and reproducibility, is not dependent on dose rate and does not affect beam quality and dose profiles. It is also capable to detect dosimetric and geometric errors and therefore it is suitable for monitoring VMAT delivery.  相似文献

PurposeDetector uniformity is an important parameter in digital mammography to guarantee a level of image quality adequate for early detection of breast cancer. Many problems with digital systems have been determined through the uniformity measurement, primarily as a result of incorrect flat-field calibration and artifacts caused by image receptor defects. The European guidelines suggest a method for the image uniformity assessment based on measurement of Signal-to-Noise ratio (SNR) and Pixel Value (PV) across a uniform image.Nineteen mammography systems from the same manufacturer installed in our organization incorporate an a-Se direct conversion detector. Since their installation, instability and inconsistency of image uniformity has attracted medical physicist attention.A number of different tests have been carried out in order to understand and establish reasons for this instability.MethodsThree different tests have been performed to evaluate the impact of the heel effect, detector temperature and ghosting on the uniformity images. All the tests are based on the acquisition of uniform images as suggested by the European Guidelines for Quality Assurance in Breast Cancer Screening and Diagnosis.ResultsResults show that an increase in detector temperature produces an increase of SNR and decrease of uniformity. A further decrease of uniformity ranging between 20% and 30% is due to the ghosting while a decrease of about 10% is due the heel effect.ConclusionsX-ray tube, system geometry and detector have an impact on the system uniformity and an understanding of the contribution of each is necessary in order to obtain comparable image quality among all the systems.  相似文献

A new method of monitoring the rate of reactions in solid-phase peptide synthesis is described. A conductivity detector in the reaction cell (patent applied for) enables the deprotection, washing and subsequent coupling stages to be examined in detail. The half-lives of the reactions can be calculated and hence the optimum reaction times can be predicted. Difficult sequences are sensed and appropriate action taken completely automatically.  相似文献

We have presented a transparent, inexpensive, rigid dome that allows a window to the wound, humidity chamber effect to continuously observe difficult skin-grafted wounds or free-tissue transfers allowing constant monitoring by visualization. The dome is inexpensive because it is simply a discarded breast implant package.  相似文献

A synchronized accumulating radioisotope detector for radio gas chromatography was developed. It comprised seven gas-flow proportional counters each with an inner volume of 10 ml. Every counter tube was connected by a mutual anti-coincidence circuit to reduce the background. The transit time of gas particles in one counter tube could be set to an optimal value between 1 and 4 s by regulating the flow-rate of the counting gas, according to analytical requirements. The improved detector maintained high chromatographic resolution, which suggested the applicability of the apparatus to capillary gas chromatography.  相似文献

An open tank photobioreactor containing transparent rectangular chambers (TRCs) was developed to improve the photosynthetic efficiency of microalgal cultivation. The TRCs, made of transparent acrylic, conducted light deep into the photobioreactor, especially at high cell concentrations. The average irradiance, Iav, was calculated by Lambert–Beer's law, and was used to determine the light conditions in the cultivation system. The photobioreactor provided large areas of illumination that improved the effective utilization of light energy for microalgae growth and created a good artificial environment for a high rate of cell growth, even at low Iav. The biomass concentration of Chlorella sp. reached 3.745 g L−1 on the 13th day, with biomass productivity of 0.340 g L−1 d−1. The total biomass obtained was 56% more than that of similar culture systems without TRCs.  相似文献
