Histochemical characteristics and sizes of the fibers of the sternotrachealis (ST) muscle have been investigated in some Anseriformes (mallard, Pekin duck, Muscovy duck, and goose) of both sexes. A sexual dimorphism has been shown in the muscle of the species examined. In the mallard and Pekin duck, the male ST muscle shows type IIIA fibers in addition to the type I, IIA, and IIB fibers observed also in the female. In the Muscovy duck, the male muscle has only type I and IIA fibers, whereas the female muscle presents type I fibers and both types IIA and IIB fibers. Moreover, the mean frequencies for each fiber type were significantly different between males and females. In the goose, both male and female muscles present only type I and IIA fibers. In all the species examined, the mean areas of each fiber type are significantly different between male and female, being always larger in the male muscles. The anatomical sexual dimorphism observed in the ST muscle is discussed in relation to function.  相似文献

Optimal conditions for studying the ultrastructure of chromatin fibers of histone-containing spermatozoa in thin sections have been determined. Better results for preservation in sperm of the sea cucumber Holothuria tubulosa, have been found than in different frog species studied. The fine structure of chromatin fibers after different treatments was studied by computer methods. A clear superbead structure was found under all conditions which preserve the chromatin fibres. These have a diameter of 30 nm, with superbeads about 33 nm long. In the best preserved cases an additional periodicity of 11 nm along the fibres was found. There is no clear relationship of this periodicity with an eventual solenoidal structure of the chromatin fibers.  相似文献

Spiders and their silk are an excellent system for connecting the properties of biological materials to organismal ecology. Orb-weaving spiders spin sticky capture threads that are moderately strong but exceptionally extensible, resulting in fibers that can absorb remarkable amounts of energy. These tough fibers are thought to be adapted for arresting flying insects. Using tensile testing, we ask whether patterns can be discerned in the evolution of silk material properties and the ecological uses of spider capture fibers. Here, we present a large comparative data set that allows examination of capture silk properties across orb-weaving spider species. We find that material properties vary greatly across species. Notably, extensibility, strength, and toughness all vary approximately sixfold across species. These material differences, along with variation in fiber size, dictate that the mechanical performance of capture threads, the energy and force required to break fibers, varies by more than an order of magnitude across species. Furthermore, some material and mechanical properties are evolutionarily correlated. For example, species that spin small diameter fibers tend to have tougher silk, suggesting compensation to maintain breaking energy. There is also a negative correlation between strength and extensibility across species, indicating a potential evolutionary trade-off. The different properties of these capture silks should lead to differences in the performance of orb webs during prey capture and help to define feeding niches in spiders.  相似文献

Investigations of the structure and function of the flexor carpi radialis muscle (FCR) in the cat have led to the hypothesis that the compartmentalized (nonuniform) distribution of fiber types within the muscle relate to the complex motor skills of the cat. To test this hypothesis a study was undertaken to compare the FCR in four mammalian species of similar body size but with different forelimb motor tasks. The species chosen were: dog, opossum, armadillo, and cat. Comparisons were made among species with regard to general muscle morphology, fiber types and sizes, fiber proportions, and fiber distriburtions. The FCR of all species was morphologically similar and contained three muscle fiber types (SO, FOG, and FG). The mean area of muscle fibers was largest in opossum, while the FCR fibers of dogs were smallest. The percentage of SO fibers in the dog FCR was greater than in the other species studied. The opossum FCR also contained a high percentage of SO fibers. The armadillo FCR consisted of a high percentage of FG fibers. In the cat FCR the percentages of all three fiber types were similar. For each species, individual fiber proportions were in agreement with the results for fiber percentages. Compartmentalized distribution of fiber types existed in each species with the dog having the most compartmentalized fiber type distribution and the cat the least compartmentalized distribution. Therefore it seems that the compartmentalized organization of the FCR is not related to any specialized motor task, but may be a generalized pattern associated with motor patterns shared among all species studied.  相似文献

Although the coiling of tendrils and the twining of vines has been investigated since Darwin's time, a full understanding of the mechanism(s) of this coiling and twining ability has not yet been obtained. In a previous study (Planta 225: 485-498), gelatinous (G) fibers in tendrils of redvine occurred concomitantly with the ability to coil, strongly indicating their role in the coiling process. In this study, tendrils and twining vines of a number of species were examined using microscopic and immunocytochemical techniques to determine if a similar presence and distribution of these fibers exists in other plant species. Tendrils that coiled in many different directions had a cylinder of cortical G fibers, similar to redvine. However, tendrils that coiled only in a single direction had gelatinous fibers only along the inner surface of the coil. In tendrils with adhesive tips, the gelatinous fibers occurred in the central/core region of the tendril. Coiling occurred later in development in these tendrils, after the adhesive pad had attached. In twining stems, G fibers were not observed during the rapid circumnutation stage, but were found at later stages when the vine's position was fixed, generally one or two nodes below the node still circumnutating. The number and extent of fiber development correlated roughly with the amount of torsion required for the vine to ascend a support. In contrast, species that use adventitious roots for climbing or were trailing/scrambling-type vines did not have G fibers. These data strongly support the concept that coiling and twining in vines is caused by the presence of G fibers.  相似文献

In the present study VIP-immunoreactive (IR) nerve fibers were found in the skin of several mammalian species (cat, dog, pig and man). They supplied predominantly the arteries and arterial portions of arteriovenous anastomoses. Far fewer VIP-IR nerve fibers innervated veins and arterioles. Capillaries were supplied by VIP-IR fibers only in sweat and Meibomian glands. Some non-vascular VIP-IR nerve fibers were seen in contact with dermal smooth muscle strands. In eccrine sweat glands and in Meibomian glands VIP-IR fibers were targeting glandular cells. In addition, VIP-IR nerve fibers innervated the upper parts of facial hair follicles. In non-neuronal localization VIP-IR occurred in Merkel cells in all species and sites, while the intraepidermal axons consistently were not VIP-IR. Radioimmunoassay of different skin regions of cats also suggested both a neuronal and a Merkel cell origin of VIP-IR. Under physiological conditions VIP which is released from its neuronal and non-neuronal cutaneous pools may have an impact on thermoregulation by influencing blood flow and sweat production. It may also modulate axon-endings in Merkel cell-axon complexes and hair follicle receptors. Under pathological conditions an enhanced release of cutaneous VIP may lead to local inflammatory processes partly mediated via release of histamine from cutaneous mast cells.  相似文献

Various nerves of 6 representative species of mammals (including the human) were studied by the comparative association of the selective staining methods of light microscopy with the ultrastructural observation after tannic acid-glutaraldehyde fixation, which provided a reliable means of characterizing the different elastic system fibers. Although mature elastic fibers are not present in nerves, elastic-related fibers are frequently observed: oxytalan fibers are found mainly in the endoneurium, whereas elaunin fibers predominate in the epineurium. These fibers are longitudinally disposed, in a parallel orientation to the axons. The fact that these findings were consistently observed in the nerves of all species studied argues strongly in favor of the existence of a uniform structural pattern of distribution of elastic system fibers in nerves as a general phenomenon in mammals.  相似文献

Multiple roles for elastic fibers in the skin.   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Dermal elastic fibers are believed to have a primary role in providing elastic stretch and recoil to the skin. Here we compare the structural arrangement of dermal elastic fibers of chick skin and different animal species. Most elastic fibers in chick skin are derived from cells that line the feather follicle and/or smooth muscle that connects the pterial and apterial muscle bundles to feather follicles. Elastic fibers in the dermis of animals with single, primary hair follicles are derived from cells lining the hair follicle or from the ends of the pili muscle, which anchors the muscle to the matrix or to the hair follicle. Each follicle is interconnected with elastic fibers. Follicles of animals with primary and secondary (wool) hair follicles are also interconnected by elastic fibers, yet only the elastic fibers derived from the primary follicle are connected to each primary follicle. Only the primary hair follicles are connected to the pili muscle. Human skin, but not the skin of other primates, is significantly different from other animals with respect to elastic fiber organization and probably cell of origin. The data suggest that the primary role for elastic fibers in animals, with the possible exception of humans, is movement and/or placement of feathers or hair.  相似文献

Choroid plexus from rat, guinea-pig, rabbit and pig was investigated by light-microscopic immunohistochemistry and by radioimmunoassay for the presence of neuropeptides. A moderately dense supply of nerve fibers containing neuropeptide Y (NPY) and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), respectively, was found around blood vessels and in close relation to the secretory epithelium in both pig and rabbit, while lower densities of nerve fibers were found in rat and guinea-pig. Peptide concentrations ranged from 10-40 pmolequivalents/g (pmoleqv/g) for NPY and 0.5-6 pmoleqv/g for VIP in all four species. Peptide histidine isoleucine (PHI) immunoreactive nerve fibers were present in pig choroid plexus at a lower density than NPY and VIP but with a similar distribution. Low concentrations of substance P (0.3-3 pmoleqv/g) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (0.1-3 pmoleqv/g) were found to a varying degree in choroid plexus tissue from the different species, while immunohistochemical investigation was unable to detect any immunoreactive nerve fibers. NPY was often found to coexist with VIP and PHI in pig choroid plexus, while a lesser amount of nerve fibers showed coexistence of NPY and the noradrenaline synthetizing enzyme, dopamine-beta-hydroxylase. Surgical sympathetic denervation by excision of the superior cervical ganglion in the rabbit abolished NPY-containing nerve fibers, as revealed by immunohistochemistry, but only decreased NPY levels by one third, which may be due to different identity of the peptide being detected by the two techniques. It is concluded that NPY-containing nerve fibers have a dual origin in the choroid plexus and coexist with either noradrenaline or VIP/PHI.  相似文献

Fine structure of the torus semicircularis of the loach, carp, common eel and rainbow trout was studied by light and elecron microscopy. The torus semicircularis of each species is divided into four layers. The subependymal first layer comprises numerous unmyelinated fibers and their terminals which contain cored vesicles. The second and the third layers are composed of small cell bodies and their dendrites respectively. These layers develop equally in the four species and contain the usual axodendritic synapses. On the other hand, the fourth layer varies in different species. The mediumsized cells in this layer, which are inferred to be of the same origin as the small cells from their configuration and size, show differences in lamination in each species. Compared with the usual axodendritic synapse of the small cells, the medium-sized cells have quite different synaptic patterns, which include inhibitory and electrical as well as the usual excitatory chemical synapses. From these findings, the medium-sized cells are surmized to receive sound of different degrees of intensity from that received by the small cells, which may have an effect on feeding behaviors of the species. In the deepest portion of the torus semicircularis of all species, there are large multipolar cells on which numerous axon terminals synapse in much the same way as they do on the medium-sized cells. These findings suggest that the synaptic patterns in the torus semicircularis may depend not on the receptive cells in each layer but on the various characteristics of the afferent fibers.  相似文献

In primate species the m. psoas major, the only muscle simultaneously controlling the spinal column and lower extremity, is expected to reflect morpho-functional adaptation to diversified locomotor behavior. By using histochemical analysis with Sudan black B staining, composition of different types of muscle fibers in the psoas major was compared between 2 Japanese macaques, 2 hamadryas baboons, 2 anubis baboons, 2 orangutans, and 17 humans. The comparison has revealed unique features of this muscle in humans: 1) Type 1 or red fibers are thicker than Type 2 or white fibers in humans but vice versa in nonhumans; 2) among the species examined the number of the muscle fibers per unit cross-sectional area is largest, implying the fibers are thinnest, in humans; 3) frequency of Type 1 fibers is highest in humans, intermediate in monkeys, and lowest in the orangutan, whereas Type 2 fibers show an inverse trend among the species. These results suggest a correspondence in primates between the composition of the psoas major muscle fibers and difference in substrates inhabited as well as in their positional behaviors.  相似文献

This study was done to determine if pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating peptide (PACAP)-immunoreactive nerve fibers occur in cardiac muscle as well as intracardiac ganglia of rats and guinea pigs and to clarify the chronotropic actions of PACAP27 in the same species using isolated heart preparations. PACAP nerve fibers were not detected in atrial or ventricular muscle of rat or guinea pig but a few stained nerve fibers occurred in the atrioventricular bundle of the guinea pig. Stained nerve fibers were prominent in intracardiac ganglia of both species. PACAP27 caused a dose-dependent tachycardia in isolated rat hearts (+39 +/- 3 beats/min with 1 nmol, n = 6). Positive and/or negative chronotropic responses were evoked by PACAP27 in guinea pig heart, depending on dose and prior exposure to the peptide. PACAP27 also caused arrhythmias in several guinea pig hearts. Treatment with atropine eliminated or prevented PACAP-evoked bradycardia and arrhythmias, implicating cholinergic neurons in these responses. Positive chronotropic responses to PACAP were unaffected by beta-adrenergic receptor blockade in either species, suggesting that tachycardia resulted from a direct action on the heart. These observations support the conclusion that endogenous PACAP could have a role in regulating parasympathetic input to the heart but through different mechanisms in rats versus guinea pigs. A direct positive chronotropic influence of endogenous PACAP is unlikely since atrial muscle lacks PACAP-immunoreactive nerve fibers.  相似文献

An examination of the cuticle of six aquatic oligochaete species using transmission electron microscopy revealed a larger morphological variation than previously known. Three freshwater species, Aulodrilus pluriseta, Spirosperma ferox (both Tubificidae), and Pristina breviseta (Naididae), and three marine species, Clitellio arenarius, Heterochaeta costata (both Tubificidae), and Paranais litoralis (Naididae), were investigated. The arrangement of the collagen fibers in the cuticle differs among the studied species. Only S. ferox shows an "orthogonal grid," i.e., layers of parallel fibers perpendicular to each other, as earlier described for lumbricids and enchytraeids. Clitellio arenarius and H. costata have fibers arranged in layers, while A. pluriseta and P. litoralis have irregularly distributed fibers. Pristina breviseta lacks cuticular fibers. The matrix surrounding the collagen fibers (when present) continues outside the fiber layer, making up a thin epicuticle, which has a unique banding in each of the studied species. The external surface of the epicuticle is covered with epicuticular projections. Their number, shape, and attachment to the epicuticle vary among the studied species. Furthermore, a distinctive internal substructure of the projections was observed in H. costata, A. pluriseta, S. ferox, and P. breviseta. Microvilli, extensions from the epidermal cells, penetrate the cuticle and terminate at its outer surface. In three species microvilli were observed to pinch off the epicuticular projections. The size, number, and shape of the latter vary; no typical microvilli were observed in S. ferox.  相似文献

A morphologic and morphometric comparison between normal human and rat extraocular muscle nerves was performed using a computer-assisted method to obtain scatter diagrams of relative sheath thickness (g ratio = quotient axon diameter/fiber diameter). Human and rat extraocular muscle nerves (nervus abducens and ramus medialis n. oculomotorii) were excised immediately before the nerve branching at the entering point into the muscle. There was no difference in the absolute number of myelinated fibers between the oculomotor and abducens nerves in both species. The distribution of myelinated fibers was classified according to their g ratios into a two-stage density cluster analysis. Two main populations of nerve fibers for human oculomotor and rat oculomotor and abducens nerves and three main populations for human abducens nerve were differentiated morphometrically and mathematically, differing in their relative sheath thicknesses. There are distinct differences between scatter diagrams of human and rat extraocular muscle nerves, in correlation with the basically different oculomotor functions of these two species. The morphometric differences between human and rat extraocular muscle nerves suggest a difference in the myelination process and the presence of functionally different nerve fibers, strongly indicated by the populations and subpopulations of myelinating nerve fibers peculiar to extraocular muscle. The existence of more than two different types of myelinated fibers in the human nerves implies that the traditional classification based on fiber caliber must be reviewed and a comparison of different classes of nerve and muscle fibers should be performed.  相似文献

The cetacean tail fluke blades are not supported by any vertebral elements. Instead, the majority of the blades are composed of a densely packed collagenous fiber matrix known as the core layer. Fluke blades from six species of odontocete cetaceans were examined to compare the morphology and orientation of fibers at different locations along the spanwise and chordwise fluke blade axes. The general fiber morphology was consistent with a three‐dimensional structure comprised of two‐dimensional sheets of fibers aligned tightly in a laminated configuration along the spanwise axis. The laminated configuration of the fluke blades helps to maintain spanwise rigidity while allowing partial flexibility during swimming. When viewing the chordwise sectional face at the leading edge and mid‐chord regions, fibers displayed a crossing pattern. This configuration relates to bending and structural support of the fluke blade. The trailing edge core was found to have parallel fibers arranged more dorso‐ventrally. The fiber morphology of the fluke blades was dorso‐ventrally symmetrical and similar in all species except the pygmy sperm whale (Kogia breviceps), which was found to have additional core layer fiber bundles running along the span of the fluke blade. These additional fibers may increase stiffness of the structure by resisting tension along their long spanwise axis.  相似文献

Trees in the beech or oak family (Fagaceae) have a mutualistic relationship with scatter-hoarding rodents. Rodents obtain nutrients and energy by consuming seeds, while providing seed dispersal for the tree by allowing some cached seeds to germinate. Seed predation and caching behavior of rodents is primarily affected by seed size, mechanical protection, macronutrient content, and chemical antifeedants. To enhance seed dispersal, trees must optimize trade-offs in investment between macronutrients and antifeedants. Here, we examine this important chemical balance in the seeds of tropical stone oak species with two substantially different fruit morphologies. These two distinct fruit morphologies in Lithocarpus differ in the degree of mechanical protection of the seed. For 'acorn' fruit, a thin exocarp forms a shell around the seed while for 'enclosed receptacle' (ER) fruit, the seed is embedded in a woody receptacle. We compared the chemical composition of numerous macronutrient and antifeedant in seeds from several Lithocarpus species, focusing on two pairs of sympatric species with different fruit morphologies. We found that macronutrients, particularly total non-structural carbohydrate, was more concentrated in seeds of ER fruits while antifeedants, primarily fibers, were more concentrated in seeds of acorn fruits. The trade-off in these two major chemical components was more evident between the two sympatric lowland species than between two highland species. Surprisingly, no significant difference in overall tannin concentrations in the seeds was observed between the two fruit morphologies. Instead, the major trade-off between macronutrients and antifeedants involved indigestible fibers. Future studies of this complex mutualism should carefully consider the role of indigestible fibers in the foraging behavior of scatter-hoarding rodents.  相似文献

Chromatin fibers encountered in various species and tissues are characterized by different nucleosome repeat lengths (NRLs) of the linker DNA connecting the nucleosomes. While single cellular organisms and rapidly growing cells with high protein production have short NRL ranging from 160 to 189 bp, mature cells usually have longer NRLs ranging between 190 and 220 bp. Recently, various experimental studies have examined the effect of NRL on the internal organization of chromatin fiber. Here, we investigate by mesoscale modeling of oligonucleosomes the folding patterns for different NRL, with and without linker histone (LH), under typical monovalent salt conditions using both one-start solenoid and two-start zigzag starting configurations. We find that short to medium NRL chromatin fibers (173 to 209 bp) with LH condense into zigzag structures and that solenoid-like features are viable only for longer NRLs (226 bp). We suggest that medium NRLs are more advantageous for packing and various levels of chromatin compaction throughout the cell cycle than their shortest and longest brethren; the former (short NRLs) fold into narrow fibers, while the latter (long NRLs) arrays do not easily lead to high packing ratios due to possible linker DNA bending. Moreover, we show that the LH has a small effect on the condensation of short-NRL arrays but has an important condensation effect on medium-NRL arrays, which have linker lengths similar to the LH lengths. Finally, we suggest that the medium-NRL species, with densely packed fiber arrangements, may be advantageous for epigenetic control because their histone tail modifications can have a greater effect compared to other fibers due to their more extensive nucleosome interaction network.  相似文献

The pectoralis muscle (M. pectoralis) of many premier soaring birds contains a smaller, accessory, deep belly in addition to the much larger superficial belly found in all flying birds. Here we describe the muscle fiber types in both the superficial and deep bellies of the pectoralis of one such adept soaring species, the white pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos).Histochemical techniques are used to demonstrate both nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (reduced) and myofibrillar adenosine triphosphatase activities within the muscle fibers. Immunocytochemical methods employing several monoclonal antibodies, each directed against a different myosin heavy chain epitope of the chicken, are also used to characterize the fibers. While the superficial belly of the muscle consists entirely of fast-twitch oxidative-glycolytic fibers, the deep belly is composed exclusively of slow fibers. These slow fibers are labelled by two different antibodies specific for chicken slow myosin. We suggest that the fibers of the superficial belly are best suited to flapping flight, and that the fibers of the deep belly would be recruited only during soaring flight. Furthermore, we hypothesize that the deep belly found in the pectoralis of soaring species probably evolved from a deep neuromuscular compartment of the superficial belly.  相似文献

True paper, in the technical sense of the term, was first made in China in 105a.d. from the bast fibers of paper mulberry and probably also from bamboo. For many centuries old rags, principally cotton or linen, supplied the papermakers with raw material In modern times, sprucewood fibers have long been outstanding for papermaking. In recent decades, however, the spruces have been equalled, if not surpassed, in tonnage used, by various species of pine, especially the southern yellow pines. Of secondary importance have been the fibers of dozens of other species.  相似文献
