When old adults participate in a strength-training program with heavy loads, they experience an increase in muscle strength and an improvement in the steadiness of submaximal isometric contractions. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of light- and heavy-load strength training on the ability of old adults to perform steady submaximal isometric and anisometric contractions. Thirty-two old adults (60-91 yr) participated in a 4-wk training program of a hand muscle. Both the light- and heavy-load groups increased one-repetition maximum and maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) strength and experienced similar improvements in the steadiness of the isometric and shortening and lengthening contractions. The increase in MVC strength was greater for the heavy-load group and could not be explained by changes in muscle activation. Before training, the lengthening contractions were less steady than the shortening contractions with the lightest loads (10% MVC). After training, there was no difference in steadiness between the shortening and lengthening contractions, except with the lightest load. These improvements were associated with a reduced level of muscle activation, especially during the lengthening contractions. 相似文献

To test the hypothesis that increases in muscle strength and flexibility are developed by specific training programs, 43 healthy young adults were tested before and after 4 different interventions conducted twice a week for 12 weeks: (a) resistance training only (n = 13); (b) flexibility training only (n = 11); (c) resistance and flexibility training (n = 9); and (d) no intervention (n = 10). There was no change in either strength or flexibility in the control group (p > 0.05). Resistance training improved muscle strength either alone (+14%; effect size = 0.53; p < 0.001) or in combination with flexibility training (+16%; effect size = 0.66; p = 0.032), but did not change flexibility (p = 0.610). Flexibility increased with specific training alone (+33%; p < 0.001) or in combination with resistance training (+18%; p < 0.001). In conclusion, in young, healthy subjects, resistance training alone did not increase flexibility, but resistance training did not interfere with the increase in joint range of motion during flexibility training. These results support the concept that specific training should be employed in order to increase either muscle strength or flexibility. 相似文献

Thirty-five individuals aged 17 to 24 in whom severe chronic hyperactivity had been diagnosed 10 years before were studied together with 25 matched controls. There were no significant differences in mean height or weight or in electroencephalographic findings, but the mean pulse rate was significantly higher in the hyperactive group. Cognitive style tests indicated continued difficulty in reflection (resulting in more errors) but less impulsivity (longer reaction time) in the hyperactive individuals. Compared with controls, hyperactive subjects were continuing to have more scholastic difficulty, although this difference seemed to be less pronounced than 5 years before. Their adjustment in work situations and living arrangements did not differ significantly from that of the controls. Restlessness, both reported and observed, continued to be a problem for the hyperactive individuals, and socialization skills and sense of well-being continued to be poorer than in the controls. The hyperactive individuals did not show significantly more antisocial behaviour, nonmedical use of drugs or serious psychiatric disturbances. 相似文献

This study evaluates and compares the effects of strength and endurance training on motor unit discharge rate variability and force steadiness of knee extensor muscles. Thirty sedentary healthy men (age, 26.0 ± 3.8 yrs) were randomly assigned to strength training, endurance training or a control group. Conventional endurance and strength training was performed 3 days per week, over a period of 6 weeks. Maximum voluntary contraction (MVC), time to task failure (at 30% MVC), coefficient of variation (CoV) of force and of the discharges rates of motor units from the vastus medialis obliquus and vastus lateralis were determined as subjects performed 20% and 30% MVC knee extension contractions before and after training. CoV of motor unit discharges rates was significantly reduced for both muscles following strength training (P < 0.001), but did not change in the endurance (P = 0.875) or control group (P = 0.995). CoV of force was reduced after the strength training intervention only (P < 0.01). Strength training, but not endurance training, reduces motor unit discharge rate variability and enhances force steadiness of the knee extensors. These results provide new insights into the neuromuscular adaptations that occur with different training methods. 相似文献

To test the hypothesis that football training would be accompanied by physiological adaptations and hormonal changes, we analyzed the effects of a whole football season on physical fitness and hormonal concentrations in youth football players. Male football players (n = 29, age 16.51 ± 0.7 years) in a regional professional league and male healthy control subjects (n = 30, age 17.1 ± 1 years) participated to the study. Blood cortisol, testosterone, and growth hormone (hGH) concentrations were assayed before the beginning of the training period (T0), just after the training period (T1), at the middle of the season (T2), and at the end of the season (T3). In each period physical tests and anthropometric measurements were also performed. Results showed significant differences in basal values of cortisol, testosterone, and growth hormone (hGH) in the four time points evaluated (P < 0.01). In addition, the concentrations of hGH were higher in the soccer players group than in control subjects (P < 0.001). Between the start of the training period and the end of the football season significant differences were observed in the anthropometric characteristics and in the physical form of the football players. Furthermore, the hormonal status was significantly correlated with the indicators of the lower limb power (squat-jump [SqJ], and counter-movement-jump [CMJ]) and those of aerobic performance (Yo–Yo intermittent recovery test level 1 (YYIRT1) and maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max)).These data underscore the importance of establishing training protocols that present the potential to promote positive adaptations without, at the same time, provoking overtraining of young players. 相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to determine if old individuals show a greater exercise-induced decrement in motor performance and slower recovery compared to young individuals. Ten college-age women (23.6 years) and ten older women (67.4 years) performed an exercise consisting of 24 eccentric actions of the forearm flexors. In young subjects, eccentric exercise is known to produce repairable muscle damage. Before the exercise and for 5 days after, isometric strength, soreness, reaction time, and movement time were measured. For both groups, strength was reduced and soreness developed in the days following the exercise, generally indicating that muscle damage had occurred. The older subjects showed a slower strength recovery such that by 5 days after exercise they had not returned to their initial level of strength. There was no significant difference in soreness development between groups. Reaction time and movement time were not adversely affected by the exercise. Thus, the older subjects demonstrated a slower strength recovery after damage-inducing exercise, and, with regard to response speed, the older subjects could compensate for the impaired muscle function as well as the younger subjects. 相似文献

The effects of 12 wk of endurance training at 70% peak O2 consumption (VO2) were studied in 10 elderly (65.1 +/- 2.9 yr) and 10 young (23.6 +/- 1.8 yr) healthy men and women. Training had no effect on weight or body composition in either group. The elderly had more adipose tissue and less muscle mass than the young. Initial peak VO2 was lower in the elderly, but the absolute increase of 5.5-6.0 ml.kg-1.min-1 after training was similar for both groups. Muscle biopsies taken at rest showed that, before training, muscle glycogen stores were 61% higher in the young. Before training, glycogen utilization per joule during submaximal exercise was higher in the elderly. Glycogen stores and muscle O2 consumption increased significantly in response to training in the elderly only. After training, the proportion of energy derived from whole body carbohydrate oxidation during submaximal exercise declined in the young only. The absolute changes that training produced in peak VO2 were similar in both age groups, but the 128% increase in muscle oxidative capacity was greater in the elderly, suggesting that peripheral factors play an important role in the response of the elderly to endurance exercise. 相似文献

This paper examines the physiological mechanisms responsible for differences in the amplitude of force fluctuations between young and old adults. Because muscle force is a consequence of motor unit activity, the potential mechanisms include both motor unit properties and the behavior of motor unit populations. The force fluctuations, however, depend not only on the age of the individual but also on the muscle group performing the task, the type and intensity of the muscle contraction, and the physical activity status of the individual. Computer simulations and experimental findings performed on tasks that involved single agonist and antagonist muscles suggest that differences in force fluctuations are not attributable to motor unit twitch force, motor unit number, or nonuniform activation of the agonist muscle, but that they are influenced by the variability and common modulation of motor unit discharge in both the agonist and antagonist muscles. Because the amplitude of the force fluctuations does not vary linearly with muscle activation, these results suggest that multiple mechanisms contribute to the differences in force fluctuations between young and old adults, although the boundary conditions for each mechanism remain to be determined. 相似文献

This study examined the persistence rate of resistance training after intervention with progressive resistance training and the long-term changes in self-perceived function as Heath-related quality of life (HRQOL) between a maintaining group (TR) and a detraining group (DT) after the intervention. One hundred sixty-seven persons aged 65 and older participated in this study. We measured SF-36 as indices of HRQOL before intervention (T1), after intervention (T2), and 1 year later (T3).We assessed 135 participants at T3, and, of these, 58 were in TR and 77 were in DT. In TR, T2 scores significantly improved over T1 scores for Physical Functioning, Role Physical, and Mental Health (p<.05-.01). Moreover, in T3 scores, Physical Functioning (p<.01) and Role Physical (p<.05) significantly improved over T1 scores. In DT, T2 scores were significantly higher than T1 scores for Vitality and Mental Health (both p<.01), while T3 scores significantly decreased from T2 scores for Physical Functioning, General Health, Vitality, and Mental Health (p<.05-p<.01). Only Physical Functioning of TR was significantly higher than that of DT in T2. However, Physical Functioning, Role Physical, General Health, Vitality, and Mental Health of TR were significantly higher than that of DT in T3 (p<.05-.01). No subscale scores at T3 were significantly lower than at T1. Our findings suggest that for the elderly, voluntarily continuing training after the structured program has beneficial effects for HRQOL, and the differences in HRQOL with regard to how to spend time after the intervention over the long term. However, it was possible for the HRQOL of the participants to deteriorate, though not significantly, at 1 year after the intervention in comparison to the baseline. This result suggests that the significant HRQOL gains of the DT group for the intervention period are very important. 相似文献

In the course of an intense weightlifting training of young athletes the change characteristics of the first phase was an increase in lean body mass, while in the second phase it was the improvement of motor abilities. Obviously, the improvement of weightlifting performance took place at a pace matching motor conduction development. The influence to be drawn concerning training methodology is that at least a half or one whole year of conditioning is necessary to create the somatic and functional preconditions of a possibly correct execution of the weightlifting technique. This finding warns against encouraging to take in competitions at an early age as well as against employing great weights in training, because both of these are likely to severely disturb outlined healthy sequence of morphological and functional development. 相似文献

Previous studies have suggested that older adults may be more resistant to muscular fatigue than young adults. We sought to determine whether motor unit firing rate might be a factor that determines the response to fatiguing exercise in young and older subjects. Motor unit recordings and muscular forces were obtained from the tibialis anterior (TA) muscle of 11 young and 8 older individuals. Maximal voluntary force was first measured during maximal-effort dorsiflexion contractions. Each subject then performed a series of 15 maximal isometric contractions, with each contraction lasting 30 s. A 10-s rest period separated the fatiguing contractions. As a result of the fatiguing exercise, both subject groups demonstrated a significant loss in maximal force. The force decline was less in the older adults (20.4%) than in the young adults (33.8%). As expected, prior to muscle fatigue, maximal firing rates in the TA muscle were greater in the young (28.1 ± 5.8 imp/s) than in the older adults (22.3 ± 4.8 imp/s). The decrease in motor unit firing rate with fatigue was also greater in the young adults (34.9%), than in the older adults (22.0%). These results suggest that the greater fatigue-resistance exhibited by older individuals might be explained by the fact that the decline in motor unit firing rate during fatigue is greater in young persons than it is in older adults. 相似文献

Some factors influencing food intake and subjective responses to meals were assessed in 2 groups (n=40 and n=36) of healthy university students. Both groups were studied for 6 days and included both "structured" and "unstructured" times. A questionnaire was completed by all subjects at 3 h intervals while awake. The questionnaires asked the subjects to state the factors that led them to choose to eat or not to eat a meal in the previous 3 h. If they ate a meal, they were required to describe the type of meal eaten and their responses to it-their hunger before it, their enjoyment of the meal itself, and their degree of satisfaction afterwards. Subjects were also asked to describe the type of meal that they would like to have eaten (the desired meal) in the absence of any restraints due to time pressure, cost, and so on. In the first group, 3 "structured" (working) and 3 "unstructured" (rest) days were chosen. Consistant with our previous studies, structured days, as compared to unstructured days, were associated with smaller meals and less positive subjective responses to them. Also, the meals that were eaten were often smaller than those that were desired, or were even missed altogether, due to time pressure. Not only were the meals eaten on unstructured days larger and rated, to by the subjects more positively, but also there was an additional positive effect if the meal played a social role. In the second group, 6 days were chosen, during which there were structured and unstructured 3 h periods. Many of the findings (with regard to reasons for eating or not eating a meal, and the effect of meal size upon subjective responses to it, for example) were the same as in the first group. However, the effect of structured vs. unstructured 3 h periods was significantly less marked than the effect of structured vs. unstructured days that had been found in the first group, and effects due to social factors and time pressure were less reliably present. The results indicate that food intake is affected by whether the whole or only part of the day is "structured" or "unstructured." These findings might be relevant to some problems faced by the workforce, in general, and by night workers, in particular. 相似文献

Coactivation of the antagonist muscle does not covary with steadiness in old adults. 总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
The purpose of the study was to determine the association between steadiness and activation of the agonist and antagonist muscles during isometric and anisometric contractions. Young (n = 14) and old (n = 15) adults used the first dorsal interosseus muscle to perform constant-force and constant-load tasks (2.5, 5, 20, 50, and 75% maximum) with the left index finger. Steadiness was quantified as the coefficient of variation of force and the SD of acceleration normalized to the load lifted. The old adults were less steady at most target forces with isometric contractions (2.5, 5, and 50%) and with most loads during the anisometric contractions (2.5, 5, and 20%). Furthermore, the old adults were less steady when performing lengthening contractions (up to 50%) compared with shortening contractions, whereas there was no difference for young adults. The reduced steadiness exhibited by the old adults during these tasks was not associated with differences in the average level of agonist muscle electromyogram or with coactivation of the antagonist muscle. 相似文献

This study aimed to compare the effects of 8-week self-paced high-intensity interval training (HIIT) vs. self-paced moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) on the physical performance and psychophysiological responses of young adults. Twenty-eight recreationally active young adults (age: 21.1 ± 1.6 years) were randomly assigned to either the self-paced HIIT (n = 14) or the MICT (n = 14) group training protocol. The HIIT consisted of two 12–24 x 30 seconds of high-intensity runs interspersed by 30 seconds of recovery. The MICT completed 24–48 minutes of continuous running. Before and after the 8-week interventions the following tests were completed: maximum oxygen consumption (V̇O2max) estimated from the Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test level 1 (YYIRTL-1), repeated sprint ability (RSA), 10–30-m sprint test, change of direction test (T-drill), countermovement jump (CMJ) and squat jump (SJ), and triple hop distance test (THD). Training rating of perceived exertion (RPE) and physical activity enjoyment scale (PACES) were assessed during the training programme. The HIIT resulted in greater improvement in YYIRTL-1, V̇O2max, RSA and T-drill performances compared to the MICT. Furthermore, RPE and PACES values were higher in the HIIT than the MICT. This study suggested that self-paced HIIT may be a more effective training regime to improve aerobic fitness with greater physical enjoyment in recreationally active young adults. 相似文献

Exercise can phase shift the circadian rhythms of young adults if performed at the right time of day. Similar research has not been done in older adults. This study examined the circadian phase-delaying effects of a single 3-h bout of low-intensity nocturnal exercise in older (n = 8; 55-73 yr old) vs. young (n = 8; 20-32 yr old) adults. The exercise occurred at the beginning of each subject's habitual sleep time, and subjects sat in a chair in dim light during the corresponding time in the control condition. The dim-light melatonin onset (DLMO) was used as the circadian phase marker. The DLMO phase delayed more after the exercise than after the control condition. On average, the difference in phase shift between the exercise and control conditions was similar for older and young subjects, demonstrating that the phase-shifting effects of exercise on the circadian system are preserved in older adults. Therefore, exercise may potentially be a useful treatment to help adjust circadian rhythms in older and young adults. 相似文献

Individuals with an intellectual disability (ID) have higher rates of obesity, lower rates of physical activity, cardiorespiratory fitness, and muscular endurance than do typically developed individuals (TDI) and are twice as likely to develop chronic disease, living half as long as TDIs do. The purpose of this study was to examine the improvements in physical capacity and functional ability in Special Olympic Athletes (SOAs) aged 19-22 years after participating in a functional training (FT) program and compare these scores with those of the SOAs in a resistance weight training (WT) program. Twenty SOAs (13 men, 7 women with mild to moderate ID) participated in a 1-hour FT program, twice a week, for 10 weeks, compared with 22 same-aged SOAs (14 men, 8 women) participating in a 1-hour WT program (2× week for 8 weeks). Prefitness and postfitness tests consisting of heart rate (HR) for the 3-minute step test, static plank, body weight squats, static bar hang, and knee push-ups were conducted. Two-tailed, paired sample t-tests (p < 0.05) were used to evaluate the differences in the FT group. Change scores were used to compare FTG with the WT group. The HR decreased by 31.8 b·min?1 pre-post in the FTG (p < 0.001). Static plank duration improved by 22.4 seconds in the FTG (p = 0.016); static plank change scores improved (p = 0.037) for the FTG (26.5 ± 32.1 seconds compared with that for the WT group (4.6 ± 22 seconds). Height and weight values were unchanged in both the groups. The results of this study demonstrate the value of FT programs for this population, because weight equipment is not always available in many settings. 相似文献

Effects of vibration training in reducing risk of slip-related falls among young adults with obesity
This study examined the effects of controlled whole-body vibration training on reducing risk of slip-related falls in people with obesity. Twenty-three young adults with obesity were randomly assigned into either the vibration or placebo group. The vibration and placebo groups respectively received 6-week vibration and placebo training on a side-alternating vibration platform. Before and after the training, the isometric knee extensors strength capacity was measured for the two groups. Both groups were also exposed to a standardized slip induced by a treadmill during gait prior to and following the training. Dynamic stability and fall incidences responding to the slip were also assessed. The results indicated that vibration training significantly increased the muscle strength and improved dynamic stability control at recovery touchdown after the slip occurrence. The improved dynamic stability could be resulted from the enhanced trunk segment movement control, which may be attributable to the strength increment caused by the vibration training. The decline of the fall rates from the pre-training slip to the post-training one was greater among the vibration group than the placebo group (45% vs. 25%). Vibration-based training could be a promising alternative or additional modality to active exercise-based fall prevention programs for people with obesity. 相似文献
