"This article considers ethnographic data collected among divorcing men and women in Britain and adopts a Maussian view of exchange in order to understand the cultural dimensions of divorce in more depth. I argue that divorcing men and women express discontinuities and continuities in their relationships by means of particular kinds of exchanges. What is of particular interest is the way that former husbands and wives place discrepant and conflicting constructions on the transfer of money and material goods between them and between themselves and their children. The article illustrates these points by examining the conflicts between fathers, mothers and their children over the emotional and economic significance of particular transactions."  相似文献

Sensory representations in the brainstem and cortex have a number of features that support the idea that neural activity patterns are important in their development. Many of these features vary across species in ways that could result from perturbances in the balance of the effects of activity patterns and position-dependent gene expression. (1) Most notably, disruptions or septa in sensory maps often reflect actual discontinuities in the receptor sheet, and the discontinuities may be reflected in a series of interconnected maps. Species with different disruption patterns in sensory sheets have different matching disruption patterns in the sensory maps and variant individuals and strains of the same species have matching variations in the receptor disruption patterns and their sensory maps. (2) In addition, mutations that misdirect some of the retinal afferents from one side of the brain to the other create new sensory maps that preserve continuities in the altered pattern of input, while creating new structural discontinuities. (3) Furthermore, functionally different classes of afferents that are mixed in the receptor sheet often segregate to activate separate populations of target cells. (4) Finally, early developing portions of receptor sheets may gain more than their share of territory in sensory maps. These and other variable features of sensory maps are most readily accommodated by theories that involve roles for instruction by evoked and spontaneous neural activity patterns.  相似文献

Several captive chimpanzees and bonobos have learned to use symbols and to comprehend syntax. Thus, compared with other nonhumans, these animals appear to have unusual cognitive powers that can be recruited for communicative behavior. This raises the possibility that wild chimpanzee vocal communication is more complex than heretofore demonstrated. To examine this possibility, I investigated whether wild chimpanzee vocal exchanges exhibit uniquely human conversational attributes. The results indicate that wild chimpanzees vocalize at low rates, tend not to respond to calls that they hear, and, when they do respond, tend to give calls that are similar to the ones they have heard. Thus, chimpanzee vocal interactions resemble those of other primate species, and show no special similarity to human conversations. The results support the view that we need to explore cognitive and social continuities and discontinuities with nonhuman primates to understand the origin and evolution of language, but also emphasize the need for fine-grained analyses of wild chimpanzee vocal interactions.  相似文献

In this article, we analyze newspaper articles and advertisements mentioning vaccination from 1915 to 1922 and refer to historical studies of vaccination practices and attitudes in the early 20th century in order to assess historical continuities and discontinuities in vaccination concern. In the Progressive Era period, there were a number of themes or features that resonated with contemporary issues and circumstances: 1) fears of vaccine contamination; 2) distrust of medical professionals; 3) resistance to compulsory vaccination; and 4) the local nature of vaccination concern. Such observations help scholars and practitioners understand vaccine skepticism as longstanding, locally situated, and linked to the sociocultural contexts in which vaccination occurs and is mandated for particular segments of the population. A rhetorical approach offers a way to understand how discourses are engaged and mobilized for particular purposes in historical contexts. Historically situating vaccine hesitancy and addressing its articulation with a particular rhetorical ecology offers scholars and practitioners a robust understanding of vaccination concerns that can, and should, influence current approaches to vaccination skepticism.  相似文献

Summary Several types of intimate association are shown between endoplasmic reticulum or endoplasmic reticulum-like membranes and the outer membranes of mitochondria in fungal hyphae. These include close physical association, contact, thread-like continuity, and direct luminal continuity. Membranes are smooth surfaced in the immediate region of association or continuity, and some have ribosomes at other sites along their surfaces. The continuities represent sites of membrane interaction which may facilitate exchange between adjacent membrane components. Additional continuities are shown between mitochondria and other endomembrane components. Observations are discussed in relation to the body of information linking mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum in a variety of eukaryotic cells.  相似文献

Sycamore cells (Acer pseudoplatanus L.) in suspension culture were grown at 25 degrees C in culture medium containing two oxygen concentrations: 250 microM O2 (standard conditions) and 10 microM O2 (O2-limiting conditions). The decrease of O2 concentration in the culture medium did not modify significantly the relative proportion of each phospholipid. In contrast, the molar proportion of fatty acids was dramatically changed in all lipid classes of the cell membranes; the average percentage of oleate increased from 3 to 45% whereas that of linoleate decreased from 49 to 22%. When normal culture conditions were restored (250 microM O2), oleate underwent a rapid desaturation process; the loss of oleic acid was associated with a stoichiometric appearance of linoleic acid at a rate of about 4 nmol of oleate desaturated/h/10(6) cells. Under these conditions, no change in the Arrhenius-type plots of the rate of sycamore cell respiration was observed; the values of the transition temperature and of the Arrhenius activation energy (Ea) associated with the cell respiration as well as with the respiration-associated enzymes remained unchanged. Thus it was concluded that the fact that a strong decrease in the fraction of unsaturated fatty acid residues present in the mitochondria had no effect on electron transport rates and Arrhenius plot discontinuities casts doubt on the significance of such changes in terms of chilling injury. Finally it is suggested that some of the Arrhenius discontinuities observed at the level of membrane enzyme could be the consequence of intrinsic thermotropic changes in protein arrangement independent of lipid fluidity.  相似文献

Cloth, Gender, Continuity, and Change: Fabricating Unity in Anthropology   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1  
In this article, I compare backstrap-loom weaving in three cultural contexts: the ancient Maya, the ancient Aztecs, and 20th-century Mesoamerica. Although continuities are present, important differences exist in the ways that weaving was situated historically. Among the Classic Maya, weaving defined class; in Aztec Mexico, weaving defined gender; and in 20th-century Mesoamerica, weaving defined ethnicity. A comparison of these cases suggests that historical study is a useful tool for both archaeologists and ethnographers. It promotes recognition of the diversity of practice and belief in ancient societies. It helps to define the scope of contemporary ethnographic study. It combats cultural essentialism and injects agency into our accounts. It enables us to acknowledge both the rich heritage of indigenous peoples and the fact of culture change. Comparative historical study provides a strong rationale for the continued association of archaeology and cultural anthropology as parts of a wider anthropological whole.  相似文献

Current classification of eating disorders is failing to classify most clinical presentations; ignores continuities between child, adolescent and adult manifestations; and requires frequent changes of diagnosis to accommodate the natural course of these disorders. The classification is divorced from clinical practice, and investigators of clinical trials have felt compelled to introduce unsystematic modifications. Classification of feeding and eating disorders in ICD-11 requires substantial changes to remediate the shortcomings. We review evidence on the developmental and cross-cultural differences and continuities, course and distinctive features of feeding and eating disorders. We make the following recommendations: a) feeding and eating disorders should be merged into a single grouping with categories applicable across age groups; b) the category of anorexia nervosa should be broadened through dropping the requirement for amenorrhoea, extending the weight criterion to any significant underweight, and extending the cognitive criterion to include developmentally and culturally relevant presentations; c) a severity qualifier "with dangerously low body weight" should distinguish the severe cases of anorexia nervosa that carry the riskiest prognosis; d) bulimia nervosa should be extended to include subjective binge eating; e) binge eating disorder should be included as a specific category defined by subjective or objective binge eating in the absence of regular compensatory behaviour; f) combined eating disorder should classify subjects who sequentially or concurrently fulfil criteria for both anorexia and bulimia nervosa; g) avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder should classify restricted food intake in children or adults that is not accompanied by body weight and shape related psychopathology; h) a uniform minimum duration criterion of four weeks should apply.  相似文献

Culture evolves     
Culture pervades human lives and has allowed our species to create niches all around the world and its oceans, in ways quite unlike any other primate. Indeed, our cultural nature appears so distinctive that it is often thought to separate humanity from the rest of nature and the Darwinian forces that shape it. A contrary view arises through the recent discoveries of a diverse range of disciplines, here brought together to illustrate the scope of a burgeoning field of cultural evolution and to facilitate cross-disciplinary fertilization. Each approach emphasizes important linkages between culture and evolutionary biology rather than quarantining one from the other. Recent studies reveal that processes important in cultural transmission are more widespread and significant across the animal kingdom than earlier recognized, with important implications for evolutionary theory. Recent archaeological discoveries have pushed back the origins of human culture to much more ancient times than traditionally thought. These developments suggest previously unidentified continuities between animal and human culture. A third new array of discoveries concerns the later diversification of human cultures, where the operations of Darwinian-like processes are identified, in part, through scientific methods borrowed from biology. Finally, surprising discoveries have been made about the imprint of cultural evolution in the predispositions of human minds for cultural transmission.  相似文献

It has been suggested that optimization of either axonal conduction velocity or the energy efficiency of action potential conduction predominates in the selection of voltage-gated sodium conductance levels in the squid axon. A population genetics model of channel gene regulatory function was used to examine the role of these and other evolutionary forces on the selection of both sodium and potassium channel expression levels. In this model, the accumulating effects of mutations result in degradation of gene regulatory function, causing channel gene expression to fall to near-zero in the absence of positive selection. In the presence of positive selection, channel expression levels fall to the lowest values consistent with the selection criteria, thereby establishing a selection-mutation balance. Within the parameter space of sodium and potassium conductance values, the physiological performance of the squid axon model showed marked discontinuities associated with conduction failure and excitability. These discontinuities in physiological function may produce fitness cliffs. A fitness cliff associated with conduction failure, combined with the effects of phenotypic noise, can account for the selection of sodium conductance levels, without considering either conduction velocity or metabolic cost. A fitness cliff associated with a transition in axonal excitability, combined with phenotypic noise, can explain the selection of potassium channel expression levels. The results suggest that voltage-gated ion channel expression will fall to low levels, consistent with key functional constraints, even in the absence of positive selection for energy efficiency. Channel expression levels and individual variation in channel expression within the population can be explained by regulatory evolution in combination with genetic variation in regulatory function and phenotypic noise, without resorting to more complex mechanisms, such as activity-dependent homeostasis. Only a relatively small region of the large, nominally isofunctional parameter space for channel expression will normally be occupied, because of the effects of mutation.  相似文献

An apparatus for the continuous and automatic measurement of respiration during growth of micro-organisms in stirred aerated culture is described. The effluent atmosphere from the culture vessels is passed through commercially available oxygen and carbon dioxide gas analyzers, and their electrical output is fed to a multipoint recorder. The apparatus has been used to measure the respiration of Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus thuringiensis, and Methylococcus capsulatus during growth on complex and defined media. In addition, pH values and dissolved oxygen concentrations were measured. Growth of P. thuringiensis in glucose-limited media showed unexpected interruptions in the oxygen consumption curves which resembled diauxic growth; growth of B. thuringiensis in complex media showed similar discontinuities of respiration. These results are explained as the sequential utilization of preferred substrates which, in the case of P. aeruginosa were provided as transient intermediates of glucose.  相似文献

Gamma oscillations (30 to 80 Hz) have been hypothesized to play an important role in feature binding, based on the observation that continuous long bars induce stronger gamma in the visual cortex than bars with a small gap. Recently, many studies have shown that natural images, which have discontinuities in several low-level features, do not induce strong gamma oscillations, questioning their role in feature binding. However, the effect of different discontinuities on gamma has not been well studied. To address this, we recorded spikes and local field potential from 2 monkeys while they were shown gratings with discontinuities in 4 attributes: space, orientation, phase, or contrast. We found that while these discontinuities only had a modest effect on spiking activity, gamma power drastically reduced in all cases, suggesting that gamma could be a resonant phenomenon. An excitatory–inhibitory population model with stimulus-tuned recurrent inputs showed such resonant properties. Therefore, gamma could be a signature of excitation–inhibition balance, which gets disrupted due to discontinuities.

Gamma oscillations (30-80 Hz) in visual cortex have been hypothesized to play an important role in feature binding, but this role has recently been questioned. This study shows that visual stimulus-induced gamma oscillations are highly attenuated with even small discontinuities in the stimulus. This "resonant" behaviour can be explained by a simple excitatory-inhibitory model in which discontinuities lead to a small reduction in lateral inputs.  相似文献

We investigated the distribution of S-phase cells during regeneration of the imaginal wing disc of Drosophila melanogaster following excision of 30 degrees, 90 degrees, and 150 degrees sectors of tissue. The fragments were cultured in adult abdomens for 1-5 days, labeled in vitro with tritiated thymidine, serially sectioned, and subjected to autoradiography. There was negligible thymidine incorporation in unoperated controls and in the undamaged parts of the operated discs, indicating that DNA synthesis in undamaged tissue is terminated during the first day of the culture period. Almost all of the fragments from which tissue had been removed, as well as controls which were simply cut without the removal of any tissue, showed a cluster of labeled cells (blastema) even after only 1 day of culture. The blastemas in control discs were short-lived, with over 50% of these discs showing no blastema by the third day in culture. Blastemas in discs from which sectors were removed were more persistent; the time at which 50% of the fragments no longer showed a blastema was 4 days for the -30 degrees fragments, 5 days for the -90 degrees fragments, and greater than 5 days for the -150 degrees fragments. The average blastema size, measured as number of labeled cells, was directly related to the amount of tissue removed, and in most cases did not change significantly during the culture period. Both wound edges incorporated tritiated thymidine initially and the S-phase cells remained tightly clustered throughout regeneration; maximum blastema width varied from about 8 to 25 cell diameters. The results are consistent with the idea that regenerative cell proliferation is stimulated and maintained by positional information discontinuities, and terminated when these discontinuities are resolved by the addition of an appropriate number of new cells.  相似文献

Plasma membranes isolated from a yeast sterol auxotroph (RD5-R) grown on 1, 5, and 15 micrograms ml-1 exogenous concentrations of sterol showed no discontinuity in plots of steady-state fluorescence anisotropy. Liposomes constructed from phospholipid and sterol extracted from RD5-R grown on different sterols indicated that exogenously supplied sterol modulated cellular phospholipids such that lipid-phase transitions were avoided. Liposomes derived from sterol and phospholipid extracted from the same culture exhibited no lipid-phase transitions. However, when phospholipid extracted from a culture grown on a specific sterol was mixed with sterol extracted from a heterologous culture grown on a different sterol to form liposomes, discontinuities were detected in the anisotropy measurements of the liposomes produced. Quantitative analyses revealed that the exogenously supplied sterol coordinately regulated specific phospholipid species, fatty acid composition, and sterol to phospholipid ratios in yeast auxotrophs.  相似文献

Cultured confluent rat astrocytes and C6 rat astrocytoma cells transport lysine with similar kinetic parameters. More than one transport mechanism may exist as suggested by discontinuities in the kinetic parameters. Sodium ion has a dual effect, being inhibitory between 1 and 10 mM and stimulatory between 30 and 137 mM. Exchange transport appears to be a minor component of lysine influx. The rate of transport into confluent cells is also affected by the recency of culture medium replacement, probably reflecting hormonal influences.  相似文献

Unique spherical bodies with multilayered walls were observed by electron microscopy in cells of a single strain of Bacteroides fragilis subsp. fragilis. Phage-like particles were present in the same cells, both free in the cytoplasm and within the spheres. The proportion of cells containing the phage-associated spherical structures ranged from less than 0.01% to about 7% depending on the culture conditions. Phage particles of morphological type B and spherical bodies were also found free in the medium surrounding the cells. Spherical bodies with discontinuities in their walls, through which phage-like particles sometimes appeared to be escaping, were also found both intra- and extracellularly. The biological significance of these distinctive spherical structures is a matter of conjecture.  相似文献

These discontinuities immediately precede similar discontinuities in the synthesis of beta-galactosidase. The temperature dependence of glucose-6-phosphatase (D-glucose-6-phosphate phosphohydrolase EC 3.1.3.9) was studied in rat liver and kidney microsomal fractions. Arrhenius plots were non-linear and showed four distinct discontinuities in enzyme activity over the temperature range 2-41 degrees C. The discontinuities occurred at approx. 39, 30, 20 and 12 degrees C in the liver and were similar to this in the kidney. Changes in the energy of activation for the enzyme were noted at approx. 20 degrees C in both tissues. The multiple discontinuities in glucose-6-phosphatase activity are viewed as a reflection of complex reorganization and/or change in physical state of the membrane components, primarily lipid.  相似文献

The prevalence of Clostridium difficile and its toxins (A and B) in HIV-positive children in Poland was investigated in a group of 18 children, aged 6 months to 8 1/2 years. Stool samples were tested using an antigen detection method for toxin A/B, cytotoxicity-neutralization and culture. In 3 cases (17%) C. difficile toxins were detected in both stool samples and strains recovered from culture. The three strains isolated were shown by PCR methods to contain toxins A and B genes. All children had been treated previously with antimicrobial and antiviral agents. All three C. difficile-positive children had mild diarrhea that resolved without specific therapy. Further studies involving a large number of children and molecular analyses of isolated C. difficile strains are necessary to determine the frequency and rate of carriage of C. difficile strains among HIV-positive children in Poland.  相似文献

Childhood, though it is understood cross-culturally in very different ways, always has a distinctive temporal framework, since children's growth and development cannot be undone. Yet, in many contexts, the times of childhood have become discordant with the rhythms, timescales, and temporal controls of migration. Focusing on the children of Indonesian and Filipino migrants in Sabah, Malaysia, this article explores the contemporary clash between the temporalities of migration and childhood. Children face separations and ruptures in shared time due to Malaysia's migration regime, and experience the temporariness of migrant life differently to their parents. Educational exclusion leads to temporal discontinuities between Malaysian-citizen and migrant childhoods, and racialized understandings of national time emphasize the negative potentiality of migrants’ children. Overall, the article argues for the importance of considering the interaction between the temporal conflicts of capitalism and forms of natural time such as childhood.  相似文献
