Tree hollows are among the rarest habitats in today''s Central European managed forests but are considered key structures for high biodiversity in forests. To analyze and compare the effects of tree hollow characteristics and forest structure on diversity of saproxylic beetles in tree hollows in differently structured managed forests, we examined between 41 and 50 tree hollows in beech trees in each of three state forest management districts in Germany. During the two‐year study, we collected 283 saproxylic beetle species (5880 individuals; 22% threatened species), using emergence traps. At small spatial scales, the size of hollow entrance and the number of surrounding microhabitat structures positively influenced beetle diversity, while the stage of wood mould decomposition had a negative influence, across all three forest districts. We utilized forest inventory data to analyze the effects of forest structure in radii of 50–500 m around tree hollows on saproxylic beetle diversity in the hollows. At these larger spatial scales, the three forest management districts differed remarkably regarding the parameters that influenced saproxylic beetle diversity in tree hollows. In Ebrach, characterized by mostly deciduous trees, the amount of dead wood positively influenced beetle diversity. In the mostly coniferous Fichtelberg forest district, with highly isolated tree hollows, in contrast, only the proportion of beech trees around the focal tree hollows showed a positive influence on beetle diversity. In Kelheim, characterized by mixed forest stands, there were no significant relationships between forest structure and beetle diversity in tree hollows. In this study, the same local tree hollow parameters influenced saproxylic beetle diversity in all three study regions, while parameters of forest structure at larger spatial scales differed in their importance, depending on tree‐species composition.  相似文献

Although several studies demonstrated the importance of dead wood for lichen conservation in N-Europe and N-America, the lichen biota on dead wood was poorly studied in the Alps, where stumps represent one of the main available dead wood type. This work aims at evaluating species richness and composition of lichens in relation to the decay of stumps in subalpine forests of the Italian Alps. Differences in species richness between three decay stages were tested using a one-way ANOVA, while the pattern of species composition was evaluated with non-metric multidimensional scaling and an Indicator Species Analysis. Overall, 69 species were found and wood decay proved to be an important factor influencing lichen communities on stumps in our subalpine forests. Despite the fact that the mean number of species per stump did not differ between the three decay stages and lichen communities broadly overlapped, a main pattern of species turnover was identified across wood decay process as well as some indicator species for each decay stage. During the decay process, lichen communities change functional and ecological composition as an adaptive response to the continuous change of substrate. Since stumps host several nationally rare species, which are related to different stages of decay, they could have a relevant role in lichen conservation in managed forests where other types of dead wood are normally absent.  相似文献

Artificially created high-stumps (snags) are created regularly during forest felling operations in Swedish coniferous production forests. The saproxylic beetle fauna in high-stumps of spruce and birch, on 20 clearcuts in Southern Sweden, were sampled by bark sieving. Ten of the clearcuts were located in hotspot areas with documented occurrence of many red-listed saproxylic beetle species. The other ten clearcuts were located in a typical production forest landscape (i.e. the matrix). Our aim was to investigate whether the benefit of creating high-stumps differs if the clearcuts is located in a hotspot area or in the matrix. In total 4,179 saproxylic beetles were found, belonging to 66 species, 9 of which were red-listed. Birch high-stumps hosted more species, on average, than spruce high-stumps. In an ordination analysis, tree species had the strongest explanatory effect among the environmental variables. No difference in beetle fauna could be found between the hotspot and matrix clearcuts, for neither birch nor spruce, according to all parameters: species numbers, species composition and red-listed species. The study does not indicate that conservation efforts in coniferous production forests should be concentrated to hotspot areas.  相似文献

Intensive forestry practises in the Swedish landscape have led to the loss and fragmentation of stable old‐growth habitats. We investigated relationships between landscape composition at multiple scales and the composition of saproxylic beetle assemblages in nine clear‐cut, mature managed and old‐growth spruce‐dominated forest stands in the central boreal zone of Sweden. We set out fresh spruce and birch logs and created spruce snags in 2001–2002 to experimentally test the effects of coarse woody debris (CWD) type and forest management on the composition of early and late successional, and red‐listed saproxylic beetle assemblages. We examined effects of CWD availability at 100 m, and landscape composition at 1 and 10 km on saproxylic beetle abundances. Additionally, we tested whether assemblage similarity decreased with increasing distance between sites. We collected beetles from the experimental logs using eclector and window traps in four periods during 2003. CWD was measured and landscape composition data was obtained from maps of remotely sensed data. The composition of saproxylic beetles differed among different CWD substrates and between clear‐cuts and the older stand types, however differences between mature managed and old‐growth forests were significant only for red‐listed species. Assemblage similarities for red‐listed species on clear‐cuts were more different at greater distances apart, indicating that they have more localised distributions. CWD availability within 100 m of the study sites was rarely important in determining the abundance of species, suggesting that early successional saproxylic beetles can disperse further than this distance. At a larger scale, a large area of suitable stand types within both 1 and 10 km resulted in greater abundances in the study sites for several common and habitat‐specific species. The availability of suitable habitat at scales of 1–10 km is thus likely to be important in the survival of many saproxylic species in forestry‐fragmented areas.  相似文献

Stand structure including spatial patterns was studied in northern hardwood and mixed forest types in the 2000-ha old-growth Big Reed Forest Reserve in northern Maine using complete stem mapping, dendrochronology, and spatial analyses on 0.5 plots. The inclusion of saplings, dead wood, age distributions, spatial pattern, and interactions provided some idea of underlying processes and temporal change. Structural characteristics were most comparable to spruce-northern hardwood forests of northern New England and New York, and most characteristics matched expected patterns for old-growth forests of the region.Results indicated smaller maximum-tree sizes, lower basal areas (26–34 ) and downed-wood volumes (29–64), higher densities (475–649), but similar species longevities compared to other mesic old-growth forests further south and in the Lake States. The stands were dominated by very shade-tolerant tree species, including Fagus grandifolia Ehrh., Acer saccharum Marsh.,Picea rubens Sarg. and Abies balsamea(L.) Mill, with each species found in many crown positions and age and size classes. The sapling layer was dominated by Fagus grandifolia followed by Picea rubens. Most species had reverse-J shaped diameter distributions, but age distributions were indicative of synchronous, episodic recruitment. In most plots, Acer saccharum diameter distributions were skewed towards the mid-larger size classes. Lack of young and small Acer saccharum stems suggested change in forest composition towards Fagus grandifolia dominance. Most species formed small-scale clusters (15 ) perhaps in response to small gap disturbances. Snags were the dominant dead wood type and were randomly to regularly distributed in most plots. Logfall directions were unrelated to hurricane paths. Recent small-scale disturbance events and topographic position appear to be important in explaining current structure and dynamics of the hardwood and mixed forests of Big Reed Forest Reserve in northern Maine. The continued effects of beech bark disease had a greater effect on hardwood plots, whereas a recent spruce budworm outbreak had a greater effect on plots with higher conifer density.The dominance of very shade tolerant tree species in small-scale clusters, and randomly distributed snags rather than clustered uproots were indicative of the prevalence of small scale gap disturbance regimes in the hardwood and mixed forests of Big Reed Forest Reserve in northern Maine. Varying topographic position may allow for slight changes in disturbance regime leading to consequent variation in structure and dynamics. H1, a more open plot on upper exposed slopes, had distinctly different characteristics such as lower live and dead tree and sapling densities than the other plots, but more uprooted trees and Acer saccharum saplings. Such small scale gap disturbance regimes operating on an episodic basis, and effects of slight variations in this regime on stand composition and structure have significant implications for silvicultural interventions and management of these forest types.  相似文献

Green-tree retention is a relatively new forestry application, which aims at decreasing the negative effects of clear-cut logging on forest biodiversity. In this study, the value of retained aspens in maintaining diverse assemblages of wood-decaying fungi (polypores; Basidiomycota) on clear-cuts was investigated, after the retention trees had died, fallen and started to decay. A total of 110 fallen aspen trunks were investigated on clear-cuts and within old-growth forests in eastern Finland, southern boreal zone; and 499 records of polypores belonging to 46 species were made. The intermediately decayed trunks on a clear-cut area hosted more species and more red-listed species than did trunks within forests. Most of the polypore species with more than two records were found in both habitats. These results suggest that many aspen-associated polypores are able to live and reproduce in sun-exposed habitats, if the quality and quantity of dead wood fulfill the species-specific requirements. This unexpected result, however, may be partly due to the exceptionally great abundance of aspen in the study area. Furthermore, in the long term, the local benefits of fallen retention trees can be limited, unless the local continuity of large aspens, both living and dead, is ensured.  相似文献

Foresters and arborists have long used fruit-bodies of heart-rot fungi as signs of advanced live-tree decay, but such usage has not been elaborated for forest conservation. I analysed relationships between a heart-rot fungus, tree-cavity supply, and cavity-nesting bird assemblage in wet hemiboreal Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) forests in Estonia. The focal species, Phellinus pini, is the main heartwood decayer of live pines; it typically forms fruit-bodies at the stage of advanced decay on old trees. I found that the pine wetlands had few tree-cavities (mostly in snags) and cavity-nesting birds (woodpeckers being almost absent) despite abundant snag supply. Only one fruit-body of P. pini was found on cavity-tree but stand-scale abundance of the fruit-bodies correlated well with cavity-nester densities. Multifactor models indicated that cavity formation, not tree death, was the limiting process for secondary cavity-nesters, and P. pini could indeed be used (in combination with old-pine abundance) for assessing their habitat quality. This fungus could also serve as an educational flagship species to bridge conservation biology and forest pathology, and its fruit-bodies can signal trees to be retained at harvesting in pine forests. The conclusion is that there is hope for developing practical indicators to manage for the hidden decay processes that govern tree-cavity development.  相似文献

Fungi in the orders Ophiostomatales and Microascales (Ascomycota), often designated as ophiostomatoid fungi, are frequent associates of scolytine bark and ambrosia beetles that colonize hardwood and coniferous trees. Several species, e.g., Ophiostoma novo-ulmi, are economically damaging pathogens of trees. Because little is known regarding the ophiostomatoid fungi in Europe, we have explored the diversity of these fungi associated with hardwood-infesting beetles in Poland. This study aims to clarify the associations between fungi in the genera Ambrosiella, Graphium (Microascales), Graphilbum, Leptographium, Ophiostoma and Sporothrix (Ophiostomatales) and their beetle vectors in hardwood ecosystems. Samples associated with 18 bark and ambrosia beetle species were collected from 11 stands in Poland. Fungi were isolated from adult beetles and galleries. Isolates were identified based on morphology, DNA sequence comparisons for five gene regions (ITS, LSU, ßT, TEF 1-α, and CAL) and phylogenetic analyses. In total, 36 distinct taxa were identified, including 24 known and 12 currently unknown species. Several associations between fungi and bark and ambrosia beetles were recorded for the first time. In addition, associations between Dryocoetes alni, D. villosus, Hylesinus crenatus, Ernoporus tiliae, Pteleobius vittatus and ophiostomatoid fungi were reported for the first time, and Sporothrix eucastanea was reported for the first time outside of the USA. Among the species of Ophiostomatales, 14 species were in Ophiostoma s. l., two species were in Graphilbum, nine species were in Sporothrix, and seven species were in Leptographium s. l. Among the species of Microascales, three species were in Graphium, and one was in Ambrosiella. Twenty taxa were present on the beetles and in the galleries, twelve only on beetles, and four only in galleries. Bark and ambrosia beetles from hardwoods appear to be regular vectors, with ophiostomatoid fungi present in all the beetle species. Most ophiostomatoid species had a distinct level of vector/host specificity, although Ophiostoma quercus, the most frequently encountered species, also had the greatest range of beetle vectors and tree hosts. Plant pathogenic O. novo-ulmi was found mainly in association with elm-infesting bark beetles (Scolytus multistriatus, S. scolytus, and P. vittatus) and occasionally with H. crenatus on Fraxinus excelsior and with Scolytus intricatus on Quercus robur.  相似文献

Fungi play a crucial role in dead wood decay, being the major decomposers of wood and affecting microbiota associated with dead wood. We sampled dead wood from five deciduous tree species over more than forty years of decay in a natural European floodplain forest with high tree species diversity. While the assembly of dead wood fungal communities shows a high level of stochasticity, it also indicates clear successional patterns, with fungal taxa either specific for early or late stages of wood decay. No clear patterns of fungal biomass content over time were observed. Out of 220 major fungal operational taxonomic units, less than 8% were associated with a single tree species, most of them with Quercus robur. Tree species and wood chemistry, particularly pH, were the most important drivers of fungal community composition. This study highlights the importance of dead wood and tree species diversity for preserving the biodiversity of fungi.  相似文献

Habitat structure, the physical arrangement of objects in space, affects animal populations, ecological interactions, species diversity, and ecosystem functioning. Conventional forest management practices that reduce habitat structural complexity are thus under reappraisal, and there are increasing efforts to understand how habitat structure affects functionally important species. We investigate here the effect of habitat structures on small mammal dens and their interactions with widespread antagonistic species (wild boars). Among habitat structures we considered tree dimension (diameter), shrub cover, rock cover, dead wood volume, and stump area. Ground cover with rooting signs measured wild boar disturbance. The number of small mammal dens was related positively to rock cover and tree diameter, and negatively to wild boar disturbance. Additionally, a positive interaction between wild boar disturbance and tree diameter emerged, showing that the effect of big trees on small mammal nesting was more evident with higher levels of disturbance. This study suggests that habitat structures that can be affected by forest management provide effective refuges for functionally important species. The effect of habitat structure on species survival and interactions thus needs to be addressed to understand ecosystem management and functioning.  相似文献

The saproxylic beetle fauna on old oaks was sampled in four regions of southern Sweden using two methods: window and pitfall trapping. The aim was to test a way of finding indicator species which can be used to identify sites with high species number or that scored high on a conservation priority species index, based on occurrence of red-listed species. From 92 sites surveyed, in total 164 species of saproxylic beetles were identified. Different sets of indicator species were selected based upon 22 sites from a centrally located region. Predictions of species number and the index for 30 other sites from the same province were made. The correlation between observed and predicted species number and the index increased with increasing number of indicators. When comparing different treatment of species indata, the explanatory power of predictions was strongest for presence/absence data. Indicator sets of species effectively caught with pitfall traps gave overall the best predictions of both species number and the index. Predictions of species number and the index worked well within the same regions but gave varied result for the three other regions which shows that transferability of indicators between regions may be doubtful.  相似文献

Preservation of woodland key habitats has become an integral part of biodiversity-oriented forest management in northern Europe. In Finland, brook-side spruce forests constitute the most important key-habitat type in terms of total area and timber volume. Our aim was to compare polypore diversity and the occurrence of red-listed species between brook-side key habitats and comparable sites of managed forest as controls. Furthermore, we assessed the importance of stand structural features to polypore communities, and contrasted regions with different land-use history. Altogether 69 key habitats and 70 controls were inventoried in four regions across southern Finland. A total of 28,023 surveyed dead-wood units had 3,307 occurrences of 114 species of which 25 species were red-listed. Key habitats hosted on average 28% (about two species) more polypore species (mainly deciduous-specialists) than controls because of a larger average volume of dead wood and a higher proportion of dead deciduous wood. However, the average number of red-listed species was low and did not differ between the two forest categories. We detected a landscape effect connected with the intensity and length of forest management history, with the highest numbers of all and red-listed species per site in eastern Finland. Volume and diversity of dead wood were the most important variables explaining variation in species richness. Presently, key habitats in managed forests appear to contribute only little to the conservation of red-listed polypore species.  相似文献

Table Mountain maintained internationally high global conservation priority with respect to the aquatic Coleoptera. The study site displayed an overall 77% endemism with 65% of species provisionally of high IUCN international conservation status. Reservoirs were shown to have a dramatic negative impact on the endemic and endangered water beetles of Table Mountain. This comprised of an overall species loss of 73%, all endemics, and a 64% loss of high conservation status species in the Hydraenidae, Dryopidae and Elmidae. Further hydrological alteration in the region was not recommended and the necessary inclusion of water beetles in future EIA assessments stipulated. The necessity for bioinventory methodology in addition to standard netting methodology was conclusively illustrated. A Balanced Scorecard approach to conservation decisions based on species level data including appropriate bioinventory survey methodology, recent survey data, IUCN status, and levels of endemism was proposed. The differentiation of species communities with altitude produced a division between upland and lowland communities on Table Mountain. Distinct differences between the reservoir impacted and natural upland water beetle communities were demonstrated.  相似文献

The tree structure of some timberline and sub-alpine forests of the Garhwal Himalayas was studied with reference to the regeneration status and survival of tree seedlings and sprouts. Nine tree and shrub species were chosen. The dominating tree species wereAbies pindrow andQuercus semicarpifolia. Sprouts were found to have a higher survival rate than seedlings, but both suffered from winter conditions. In Sweden one forestry method, the clear-cutting method, has been used all over the country despite differences in climate, topography etc. At present there is a growing interest in using alternative methods such as selective felling, which to a larger extent mimic natural disturbances. In this study we compare virgin forests with stands which have been cut with old selective felling (dimension felling), new selective felling (single tree selection felling), and clear-cutting with respect to frequency of characters important to biodiversity (mainly dead wood). The frequency of different types of dead wood decreases with increasing intensity of the cutting method in the following order: old selective felling, new selective felling, and clear-cutting. New selective felling had higher amounts and quality of dead wood compared to clear-cutting. New selective felling also showed less differences compared to virgin forests than clear-cutting. Dead wood in new selective felling compared to clear-cutting may offer substrate for different types of faunas because of the environment surrounding the dead wood. Even if the new selective felling method seems to provide higher amounts of dead wood compared to the clear-cutting method, further studies of organisms utilising the dead wood are needed. New selective felling does not seem to solve the problem of decreasing availability of dead wood in managed forests and there is still a need to preserve unmanaged forest patches in a landscape perspective in order to offer habitats with a high amount of dead wood.  相似文献

The once extensive native forests of New Zealand’s central North Island are heavily fragmented, and the scattered remnants are now surrounded by a matrix of exotic pastoral grasslands and Pinus radiata plantation forests. The importance of these exotic habitats for native biodiversity is poorly understood. This study examines the utilisation of exotic plantation forests by native beetles in a heavily modified landscape. The diversity of selected beetle taxa was compared at multiple distances across edge gradients between each of the six possible combinations of adjacent pastoral, plantation, clearfell and native forest land-use types. Estimated species richness (Michaelis–Menten) was greater in production habitats than native forest; however this was largely due to the absence of exotic species in native forest. Beetle relative abundance was highest in clearfell-harvested areas, mainly due to colonisation by open-habitat, disturbance-adapted species. More importantly, though, of all the non-native habitats sampled, beetle species composition in mature P. radiata was most similar to native forest. Understanding the influence of key environmental factors and stand level management is important for enhancing biodiversity values within the landscape. Native habitat proximity was the most significant environmental correlate of beetle community composition, highlighting the importance of retaining native remnants within plantation landscapes. The proportion of exotic beetles was consistently low in mature plantation stands, however it increased in pasture sites at increasing distances from native forest. These results suggest that exotic plantation forests may provide important alternative habitat for native forest beetles in landscapes with a low proportion of native forest cover.  相似文献

To identify thresholds in the relationship between the number of species in viable populations and habitat availability is useful for nature conservation. However, to obtain such empirical data may be extremely laborious. Many saproxylic (wood-living) species are under threat because there is little coarse woody debris (CWD) in managed forests. Based on computer simulations of CWD dynamics, and information about the substrate requirements of red-listed saproxylic species, we conclude that it is unlikely that any specific quantity of CWD can be defined as the extinction threshold for large numbers of species, since different species are specialists in utilising different types of CWD. In our analysis, we identified a curvilinear relationship between total CWD and the number of red-listed species in viable populations, even assuming that there were sharp extinction thresholds for individual species. Thus, it is highly unlikely that it will ever be possible to identify simple targets for maintenance of CWD based on extinction thresholds for the whole community of saproxylic species. Instead other strategies are necessary when formulating conservation targets.  相似文献
