Summary Combining ability studies with respect to grain quality characteristics viz., beta-Carotene, total carotenoids, protein content, 250-grain weight, grain hardness and grain yield were carried out from a 13x13 diallel cross set in pearl millet [Pennisetum typhoides (Burm S&H)].The parents versus hybrids comparison indicated significant heterosis for all the traits under study. In general the hybrids having higher grain yield had bold hard grains with more carotene but low protein content, although a few hybrids combined high yield with an average protein percentage. The relative proportions of the general and specific combining ability variances indicated predominance of non-additive genetic variance with respect to all the traits. The per se performance of parents provided a fairly good indication of their combining ability in most cases. Parents possessing desirable grain quality characteristics were identified. Breeding implications are discussed.Part of the Ph.D. dissertation submitted to the Punjab Agricultural University by the senior author in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree  相似文献

Two pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br. emend. Stuntz] hybrids GHB-30 and MH-179 were given defoliation treatments prior to anthesis comprising zero leaf to intact control. Keeping or removing even flag leaf only significantly altered the grain yield. With increasing leaf area (leaf numbers) the grain yield also significantly increased. Test mass showed more or less a similar trend. The leaves in the upper portion (nearer to sink) showed a greater contribution to the grain yield than the lower ones (away from sink). However, the highest leaf efficiency in terms of contribution per unit leaf area and the contribution by the whole leaf to the grain yield was recorded by 4th and 3rd leaf, respectively. The stem (covered with petioles) contributed to the extent of around 12 %. The existing leaves compensated to some extent for the defoliated ones.  相似文献

Four near-isonuclear polycytoplasmic versions of 81A and two of Pb 402A male-sterile lines of pearl millet (Pennisetum typhoides) were used in factorial matings with five inbred male testers in different combinations in three sets. The cytoplasmic differences were studied for several agronomic traits using mean values and general combining effects (gca) of male-sterile lines, and specific combining ability effects of hybrids. The fertility/ sterility behaviour of different male-sterile lines in crosses with common male parents was also studied. Significant differences among near-isonuclear polycytoplasmic lines were observed in mean values for a few traits such as plant height, leaf length and peduncle length, but the differences for combining ability were more pronounced. The A3 cytoplasm was a better general combiner than the A2 cytoplasm for grain yield and both A2 and A3 cytoplasms were better general combiners for leaf length and peduncle length. In addition, superiority of A3 cytoplasm for gca was observed for plant height and ear characters over the A2 cytoplasm in set II. A differential behaviour of cytoplasms, both in combination with a common pollinator and across pollinators, was observed for several traits. The results provide evidence for the distinctiveness of different cytoplasmic sources in pearl millet and for the influence of cytoplasmic factors on the phenotypic expression of nuclear genes. A diversification of male sterility sources in the breeding of pearl millet hybrids is suggested.  相似文献

Summary Dwarf varieties have had virtually no impact on the production of pearl millet, in contrast to the case of wheat, rice, and sorghum. This research compared tall and dwarf near-isogenic F1 hybrids to attempt to determine if there were deleterious effects of the d 2 dwarfing gene that might account for the lack of release/cultivation of dwarf pearl millet cultivars. Dwarf isohybrids on average yielded less than the tails, because of a smaller average seed size combined with a similar grain number per unit area. There was, however, a larger contribution of background genetic variation (pollinator, male-sterile, and interaction effects) to hybrid variation for nearly all characters measured, including seed size, than there was of the dwarfing gene. Selection of dwarf parents capable of producing hybrids with equal seed size and yield to that of tall parents should not be difficult.Journal article no. 1469 of the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics, Patancheru, A.P. 502 324, India  相似文献

Large-scale cultivation of pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br. F1 hybrids in India has led to increased incidence of downy-mildew (Sclerospora graminicola). There is concern that the A1 male-sterile cytoplasm used in all the hybrids released so far is responsible for this increase. The influence of A1 malesterile cytoplasm on downy-mildew incidence in pearl millet was studied by comparing the disease reaction of 40 pairs of F1 hybrids, each pair carrying respectively a1 male-sterile and normal B cytoplasm. Mean downy-mildew incidence was similar in the hybrids carrying either A1 male-sterile or B cytoplasm. The general combining ability of lines with and without A1 cytoplasm was found to be similar for downy-mildew incidence. These results indicated that in pearl millet A1 cytoplasm is not associated with increased downymildew incidence. The possible danger of using only one source of cytoplasm has been briefly discussed.  相似文献

Summary Combining ability studies for grain yield and its primary component traits in diallel crosses involving seven diverse wheat cultivars of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) over generations F1-F5 are reported. The general and specific combining ability variances were significant in all generations for all the traits except specific combining ability variance for number of spikes per plant in the F5. The ratio of general to specific combining ability variances was significant for all the traits except grain yield in all the generations. This indicated an equal role of additive and non-additive gene effects in the inheritance of grain yield, and the predominance of the former for its component traits. The presence of significant specific combining ability variances in even the advanced generations may be the result of an additive x additive type of epistasis or evolutionary divergence among progenies in the same parental array. The relative breeding values of the parental varieties, as indicated by their general combining ability effects, did not vary much over the generations. The cheap and reliable procedure observed for making the choice of parents, selecting hybrids and predicting advanced generation (F5) bulk hybrid performance was the determination of breeding values of the parents on the relative performance of their F2 progeny bulks.  相似文献

Prediction methods to identify single-cross hybrids with superior yield performance have the potential to greatly improve the efficiency of commercial maize (Zea mays L.) hybrid breeding programs. Our objectives were to (1) identify marker loci associated with quantitative trait loci for hybrid performance or specific combining ability (SCA) in maize, (2) compare hybrid performance prediction by genotypic value estimates with that based on general combining ability (GCA) estimates, and (3) investigate a newly proposed combination of the GCA model with SCA predictions from genotypic value estimates. A total of 270 hybrids was evaluated for grain yield and grain dry matter content in four Dent × Flint factorial mating experiments, their parental inbred lines were genotyped with 20 AFLP primer-enzyme combinations. Markers associated significantly with hybrid performance and SCA were identified, genotypic values and SCA effects were estimated, and four hybrid performance prediction approaches were evaluated. For grain yield, between 38 and 98 significant markers were identified for hybrid performance and between zero and five for SCA. Estimates of prediction efficiency (R 2) ranged from 0.46 to 0.86 for grain yield and from 0.59 to 0.96 for grain dry matter content. Models enhancing the GCA approach with SCA estimates resulted in the highest prediction efficiency if the SCA to GCA ratio was high. We conclude that it is advantageous for prediction of single-cross hybrids to enhance a GCA-based model with SCA effects estimated from molecular marker data, if SCA variances are of similar or larger importance as GCA variances.  相似文献

Among the various available sources of male-sterile cytoplasm in pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R.Br.], the A1 source has been exploited the most for the breeding of commercial F1 hybrids. The effect of this source on the combining ability (CA) for smut severity was studied since it is the CA that determines the performance of hybrids. The effect was estimated by comparing the CA estimates of 5 pairs of lines and 35 pairs of crosses with and without A1 cytoplasm. The cytoplasm showed either a significantly desirable or at least no adverse effect on the CA of 4 out of the 5 line pairs and 56 out of 70 pairs of comparison of crosses in two environments. The differential effect of cytoplasm in some pairs might be due to its interaction with nuclear genes. These results further substantiated that the A1 cytoplasm is not linked with increased smut severity in pearl millet hybrids.  相似文献

Summary Regression analyses on grain yield of 20 hybrid and 13 composite varieties of pearl millet (Pennisetum typhoides (Burm. S. & H.)) evaluated at 19 sites in India were performed to assess their relative stability and to compare different measures of environmental values. A large portion of the significant genotype X environment interactions was attributed to the non-linear component and deviations mean squares (Sdi 2) were a very important parameter for selection of stable varieties. The mean grain yield was positively associated with regression coefficients and deviations mean squares. The hybrids MH 31, MH 35, MH 36 and MH 62 and composite populations MP 16, MP 31 and MP 36 possessed general adaptability. The use of dependent, independent and near-independent measures of environmental values has been found to have little influence on the general interpretation of regression analysis in pearl millet.  相似文献

Two heterotic groups and four heterotic patterns were identified for IRRI hybrid rice germplasm to develop hybrid rice in the tropics based on SSR molecular data and field trials.

Abstract

Information on heterotic groups and patterns is a fundamental prerequisite for hybrid crop breeding; however, no such clear information is available for tropical hybrid rice breeding after more than 30 years of hybrid rice commercialization. Based on a study of genetic diversity using molecular markers, 18 parents representing hybrid rice populations historically developed at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) were selected to form diallel crosses of hybrids and were evaluated in tropical environments. Yield, yield heterosis and combining ability were investigated with the main objectives of (1) evaluating the magnitude of yield heterosis among marker-based parental groups, (2) examining the consistency between marker-based group and heterotic performance of hybrids, and (3) identifying foundational hybrid parents in discrete germplasm pools to provide a reference for tropical indica hybrid rice breeding. Significant differences in yield, yield heterosis and combining ability were detected among parents and among hybrids. On average, the hybrids yielded 14.8 % higher than the parents. Results revealed that inter-group hybrids yielded higher, with higher yield heterosis than intra-group hybrids. Four heterotic patterns within two heterotic groups based on current IRRI B- and R-line germplasm were identified. Parents in two marker-based groups were identified with limited breeding value among current IRRI hybrid rice germplasm because of their lowest contribution to heterotic hybrids. Heterotic hybrids are significantly correlated with high-yielding parents. The efficiency of breeding heterotic hybrids could be enhanced using selected parents within identified marker-based heterotic groups. This information is useful for exploiting those widely distributed IRRI hybrid rice parents.  相似文献

Marker-based prediction of hybrid performance facilitates the identification of untested single-cross hybrids with superior yield performance. Our objectives were to (1) determine the haplotype block structure of experimental germplasm from a hybrid maize breeding program, (2) develop models for hybrid performance prediction based on haplotype blocks, and (3) compare hybrid performance prediction based on haplotype blocks with other approaches, based on single AFLP markers or general combining ability (GCA), under a validation scenario relevant for practical breeding. In total, 270 hybrids were evaluated for grain yield in four Dent × Flint factorial mating experiments. Their parental inbred lines were genotyped with 20 AFLP primer–enzyme combinations. Adjacent marker loci were combined into haplotype blocks. Hybrid performance was predicted on basis of single marker loci and haplotype blocks. Prediction based on variable haplotype block length resulted in an improved prediction of hybrid performance compared with the use of single AFLP markers. Estimates of prediction efficiency (R 2 ) ranged from 0.305 to 0.889 for marker-based prediction and from 0.465 to 0.898 for GCA-based prediction. For inter-group hybrids with predominance of general over specific combining ability, the hybrid prediction from GCA effects was efficient in identifying promising hybrids. Considering the advantage of haplotype block approaches over single marker approaches for the prediction of inter-group hybrids, we see a high potential to substantially improve the efficiency of hybrid breeding programs. Combining ability for grain yield, yield components, and several agronomic and qualitative traits, was studied in a seven-parent diallel cross. The 21 F1 hybrids and the seven parental cultivars were grown in replicated plot trials sown at normal seed density in three locations in the years 1992 and 1993. The effects of general combining ability (gca) were highly significant for all the traits measured with the exception of seeds per spikelet, while the specific combining ability (sca) effects were statistically significant for grain yield, plant height, heading time, for all the yield components, and for the Chopin alveographic parameters P and P/L ratio. For the majority of the traits measured gca was greater than sca. Standard heterosis (sh) for grain yield, i.e., the superiority of the hybrids over the best pure line cultivar(cv Eridano), was only 3.3%, confirming previous finding which indicate sh effects in the range of 10%. The most interesting hybrid derived from the cross Maestra x Golia revealed a yield level approaching that of the highest yielding cv Eridano but appeared more interesting because of its reduced plant height and superior bread-making quality, signifying a selling price 30% higher. It was concluded, therefore, that the first generation of hybrids, likely to appear on the market in the next few years, will be characterized by a yield potential only slightly superior to that of the best standard cvs but associated with other desirable traits, such as bread-making quality.  相似文献

The use of different sources of cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) in hybrid seed production of pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.] is advocated to avoid possible disease epidemics occurring due to cytoplasmic uniformity. The effects of commercially unexploited, but potentially exploitable, sources of CMS, like A2, A3 and A4, on downy mildew [Sclerospora graminicola (Sacc.) Schroet] incidence were studied by using the disease incidence of isonuclear hybrids with male-sterile and fertile cytoplasm. The mean downy mildew incidence of hybrids carrying different male-sterile cytoplasm was similar to that of hybrids retaining the fertile cytoplasm. The cytoplasm accounted for only 0.6% of the total variation and its effect was non-significant; pollinators could explain most of the variation in determining the disease incidence of hybrids. This suggested that these male-sterile cytoplasms are not linked to downy mildew susceptibility and thus can be exploited commercially to broaden the cytoplasmic base of the male-sterile lines and, ultimately, of hybrids.  相似文献

Because of its high growth rate at low temperatures in early spring, there is renewed interest in Brassica rapa as a winter crop for biomass production in Europe. The available cultivars are not developed for this purpose however. An approach for breeding bioenergy cultivars of B. rapa could be to establish populations from two or more different cultivars with high combining ability. The objective of this study was to evaluate the heterosis for biomass yield in the European winter B. rapa genepool. The genetic variation and heterosis of the biomass parameters: dry matter content, fresh and dry biomass yields were investigated in three cultivars representing different eras of breeding by comparing full-sibs-within and full-sibs-between the cultivars. Field trials were performed at two locations in Germany in 2005–2006. Mean mid-parent heterosis was low with 2.5% in fresh and 3.0% in dry biomass yield in full-sibs-between cultivars. Mean values of individual crosses revealed a higher variation in mid-parent heterosis ranging from 14.6% to −7.5% in fresh biomass yield and from 19.7% to −12.7% in dry biomass yield. The low heterosis observed in hybrids between European winter cultivars can be explained by the low genetic variation between these cultivars as shown earlier with molecular markers. In conclusion, a B. rapa breeding program for biomass production in Europe should not only use European genetic resources, but should also utilize the much wider worldwide variation in this species.  相似文献

Summary Twelve varieties representing six geographical regions and nine taxonomic groups from a World Collection ofSorghum were used in a diallel and line X tester analysis of the nature of genetic variation for protein and lysine content. In a majority of crosses, heterosis was negative for protein, and positive for lysine.Analysis of combining ability indicated that both additive and non-additive variation were important for protein, while the non-additive component was predominant for lysine. Heterosis inlow Xlow andmedium Xlow crosses also indicated the presence of substantial non-allelic gene interactions for both the characters.Associations between protein, lysine and yield in parents were significantly different from those in the hybrids indicating considerable scope for genetic manipulation. Negative correlations between protein and lysine (% protein) and between protein and grain yield were very low. The results indicated that a high level of protein and moderately high lysine may be incorporated in high yielding varieties of sorghum, by using Caudatum kaura, Roxburghii shallu and durra from Nigeria and Sudan in the hybridisation programme.  相似文献

Summary In a diallel cross of Phaseolus aureus involving five varieties, combining ability and gene action for grain yield, grains per pod and pods per plant were estimated. The study indicated that both general combining ability and specific combining ability effects were significant and important for all three traits. Partial dominance for grain yield and partial to over-dominance for grains per pod and pods per plant were observed. Dominant genes seem to govern the inheritance of all three characters. Combining ability, and graphical and component variance analyses indicated that the grain yield and two of its components are influenced by both additive and non-additive gene action.  相似文献

Heterosis is an important component of hybrid yield performance. Identifying high yielding hybrids is expensive and involves testing large numbers of hybrid combinations in multi-environment trials. Molecular marker diversity has been proposed as a more efficient method of selecting superior combinations. The aim of this study was to investigate the value of molecular marker-based distance information to identify high yielding grain sorghum hybrids in Australia. Data from 48 trials were used to produce hybrid performance-estimates for four traits (yield, height, maturity and stay green) for 162 hybrid combinations derived from 70 inbred parent lines. Each line was screened with 113 mapped RFLP markers. The Rogers distances between the parents of each hybrid were calculated from the marker information on a genome basis and individually for each of the ten linkage groups of sorghum. Some of the inbred parents were related so the hybrids were classified into 75 groups with each group containing individual hybrids that showed similar patterns of Rogers distances across linkage groups. Correlations between hybrid-group performance and hybrid-group Rogers distances were calculated. A significant correlation was observed between whole genome-based Rogers distance and yield ( r = 0.42). This association is too weak to be of value for identifying superior hybrid combinations. One reason for the generally poor association between parental genetic diversity and yield may be that important QTLs influencing heterosis are located in particular chromosome regions and not distributed evenly over the genome. Variation in the sign and magnitude of correlations between Rogers distance and hybrid-group performance for particular linkage groups observed in this study support this hypothesis. The concept of using diversity on individual linkage groups to predict performance was explored. Using data from just two linkage groups 38% of the variation in hybrid performance for grain yield could be explained. A model combining phenotypic trait data and parental diversity on particular linkage groups explained 71% of the variation in grain yield and has potential for use in the selection of heterotic hybrids.  相似文献

Trichoshield, a talc formulation consisting of spores of Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma lignorum, Gliocladium virens and Bacillus subtilis was tested, following different application methods, for its ability to promote growth of pearl millet plants and to induce resistance to downy mildew of pearl millet. Under laboratory conditions, trichoshield seed treatment enhanced seed germination and seedling vigor of pearl millet significantly over the control; under greenhouse conditions vegetative growth parameters like height, fresh and dry weight, leaf area and number of tillers were significantly enhanced over the control: Trichoshield formulation offered greater protection against downy mildew in comparison with individual strains of T. harzianum, T. lignorum, G. virensand B. subtilis. Among the methods of application, foliar spray was found to be a more efficient delivery method than seed treatment or slurry treatment. Combinations of foliar spray with seed treatment and slurry treatment produced the same effect as foliar spray alone. Under field conditions, trichoshield treatment enhanced reproductive parameters like number of earheads, length and girth of earheads, 1000 seed weight and yield significantly over the control. Days required for 50% flowering was reduced by 4 days compared to the control. Yield enhancement of 28% over the control was highly significant. Trichoshield treatment offered protection ranging from 52 to 71% under field conditions, depending on the application method. However, the chemical fungicide metalaxyl Apron provided the highest protection against downy mildew, both under greenhouse and field conditions.  相似文献
