Abstract: We developed new, and validated existing, indices of nutritional condition for live and dead mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus). Live animal indices included a body condition score (BCS), thickness of subcutaneous fat and selected muscles using ultrasonography, and body mass. Dead animal indices included femur, metatarsal, and mandible marrow fat, 3 kidney fat indices, and 2 carcass scoring methods. We used 21 female deer and 4 castrates (1-11 yr old) varying widely in nutritional condition (2-28% ingesta-free body fat). Deer were euthanized and homogenized for chemical analysis of fat, protein, water, and ash content. Estimates of fat and gross energy (GE) were regressed against each condition indicator using regression. Subcutaneous fat thickness, a rump BCS, and rLIVINDEX (an arithmetic combination of subcutaneous fat thickness and the rump BCS) were most related to condition for live animals (r2 ≥ 0.87, P < 0.001) whereas the Kistner score and kidney fat were most related to fat and GE for dead animals (r2 ≥ 0.77, P < 0.001). We also evaluated range of usefulness and sensitivity to small changes in body condition for all models. In general, indices with moderate or highly curvilinear statistical relations to body fat or those based on only one fat depot or a small number of ranking scores will have limitations in their use. Our results identify robust tools for a variety of research and monitoring designs useful for evaluating nutrition's effect on mule deer populations.  相似文献

Body condition indices are widely used by ecologists, but many indices are used without empirical validation. To test the validity of a variety of indices, we compared how well a broad range of body condition indices predicted body fat mass, percent body fat and residual fat mass in mice Mus musculus. We also compared the performance of these condition indices with the multiple regression of several morphometric variables on body fat mass, percent body fat and residual fat mass. In our study population, two ratio based condition indices – body mass/body length and log body mass/log body length – predicted body fat mass as well as or better than other ratio and residual indices of condition in females. In males one ratio based condition index (log body mass/log body length) and one residual index (residuals from a regression of pelvic circumference on body length) were best at predicting body fat mass. All indices were better at estimating body fat mass, and residual fat mass than at estimating percent body fat. The predictions of body fat were much better for females than for males. Multiple regressions incorporating pelvic circumference (i.e. girth at the iliac crests) were the best predictors of body fat mass, residual fat mass, and percent body fat, and these multiple regressions were better than any of the condition indices. We recommend 1) that condition be precisely defined, 2) that predictors of condition be empirically validated, 3) that pelvic circumference be considered as a potential predictor of fat content, and 4) that, in general, multiple regression be considered as an alternative to condition indices.  相似文献

Evaluating the validity of using unverified indices of body condition   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Condition indices are commonly used in an attempt to link body condition of birds to ecological variables of interest, including demographic attributes such as survival and reproduction. Most indices are based on body mass adjusted for structural body size, calculated as simple ratios or residuals from regressions. However, condition indices are often applied without confirming their predictive value (i.e., without being validated against measured values of fat and protein), which we term 'unverified' use. We evaluated the ability of a number of unverified indices frequently found in the literature to predict absolute and proportional levels of fat and protein across five species of waterfowl. Among indices we considered, those accounting for body size never predicted absolute protein more precisely than body mass, however, some indices improved predictability of fat, although the form of the best index varied by species. Further, the gain in precision by using a condition index to predict either absolute or percent fat was minimal (rise in r2≤0.13), and in many cases model fit was actually reduced. Our data agrees with previous assertions that the assumption that indices provide more precise indicators of body condition than body mass alone is often invalid. We strongly discourage the use of unverified indices, because subjectively selecting indices likely does little to improve precision and might in fact decrease predictability relative to using body mass alone.  相似文献

The investigation established and validated methods to measure multiple biochemical indices of condition (whole body total lipids, whole body triglycerides, muscle RNA : DNA ratio and muscle protein) simultaneously in the same individual juvenile fish. It also provided examples of their application using a species comparison (salmonids and cyprinids) of the degree of change in these indices after food deprivation. The results showed that juvenile rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss were much more susceptible to a decline in all biochemical indices of condition than juvenile fathead minnows Pimephales promelas upon food deprivation. The combination of these techniques can be used to accurately assess condition and growth potential of individuals from wild fish populations.  相似文献

Changes in blood, urine and physical condition indices in 23 adult male black-tailed jackrabbits (Lepus californicus) with ad libitum feeding and 25% feed restriction were measured over a 2 wk period from 30 May to 12 June 1988. Feed restricted jackrabbits had (1) lower post-trial body weights and kidney fat indices, (2) higher femur marrow fat, serum bilirubin and cortisol concentrations, and adrenal cortex width, and (3) depressed immune function. No single index alone could best measure the nutritional status of these jackrabbits.  相似文献

We evaluated the stored body fat of Japanese black bears (Ursus thibetanus japonicus) killed as nuisances in Gifu and Fukushima prefectures, Japan, during 2005-2007. We employed femur marrow fat (FMF), modified kidney fat index (mKFI), and abdominal subcutaneous fat (ASF) as indices for quantitative evaluation. We examined the basic characteristics of these indices, such as seasonality, age and sex dependency, and the quantitative relationship among them. mKFI and ASF increased towards the beginning of the denning period (December), while FMF was relatively stable throughout the sampling period (July-December). In cubs, all indices showed significantly lower values than in the older age classes. There seemed to be a catabolizing order between FMF and mKFI, but not between mKFI and ASF. We also evaluated the yearly change in the indices, and discussed its relevance to the incidence of bear intrusion into human residential areas. Bears nuisance-killed in summer (July-September) 2006 had a significantly larger amount of stored body fat than those killed in summer 2007, although the number of nuisance kills was larger in 2006 than in 2007. This suggests that poor nutritional condition is not a direct cause of bear intrusion.  相似文献

Body fat stores may serve as an index of condition in mammals. Thus, techniques that measure fat content accurately are important for assessing the ecological correlates of condition in mammal populations. We compared the ability of two conductive techniques, bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and total body electrical conductivity (TOBEC), to predict body composition with that of morphometric methods in three small mammal species: red squirrels (n=13), snowshoe hares (n=30), and yellow-bellied marmots (n=4). Animals were livetrapped in northern Idaho; BIA (all subjects) and TOBEC (squirrels only) measurements were taken following chemical immobilization in the field, and morphometric measurements were taken postmortem. Information provided by BIA and TOBEC failed to improve upon the predictive power of morphometric equations for total body water (TBW) and lean body mass (LBM) in squirrels and hares, which do not store substantial amounts of fat (<5% body mass comprised of fat). Although the same pattern held with respect to LBM in marmots, which accumulate substantial amounts of body fat (>10% body mass), a BIA-based model proved best at estimating TBW, suggesting that the usefulness of conductive techniques may be a function of fat deposition. However, regardless of the technique used to predict body composition, estimates of body fat furnished by our equations failed to approximate actual fat levels accurately in all three test species, probably because these techniques only provide indirect estimates of fat content. These results highlight the limitations inherent in contemporary methods of animal fat estimation and underscore the need for the development of direct and accurate measures of body fat in mammals.  相似文献

Morphometrics and isotope-labelled water were used to determine body composition [total body water, total body fat and fat-free mass (FFM)] of three captive female olive baboons (Papio anubis). Mean mass was 16.5 kg, comparable with other captive settings but heavier than wild olive baboons. Average water content was 66%; FFM averaged 90.5%. Baboon females have less body fat than human counterparts. Compared with captive or wild baboons, these females were adequately nourished for their energy expenditure. A positive association between total mass and FFM existed, but due to the small sample no general relationship was observed for body fat or FFM and condition or size measures. The kinetics of deuterium equilibration in body fluids for baboons was determined as 3-4 hours after injection, similar to that for humans. Deuterium dilution technique appears to be an appropriate method for studying body composition in baboons, although a larger sample is needed for relationships between morphometric indices and body composition.  相似文献

Body condition may predict individual fitness because those in better condition have more resources to allocate towards improving their fitness. However, the hypothesis that condition indices are meaningful proxies for fitness has been questioned. Here, we ask if intraspecific variation in condition indices predicts annual reproductive success and survival. We monitored a population of Neochmia phaeton (crimson finch), a sedentary, tropical passerine, for reproductive success and survival over four breeding seasons, and sampled them for commonly used condition indices: mass adjusted for body size, muscle and fat scores, packed cell volume, hemoglobin concentration, total plasma protein, and heterophil to lymphocyte ratio. Our study population is well suited for this research because individuals forage in common areas and do not hold territories such that variation in condition between individuals is not confounded by differences in habitat quality. Furthermore, we controlled for factors that are known to impact condition indices in our study population (e.g., breeding stage) such that we assessed individual condition relative to others in the same context. Condition indices that reflect energy reserves predicted both the probability of an individual fledging young and the number of young produced that survived to independence, but only during some years. Those that were relatively heavy for their body size produced about three times more independent young compared to light individuals. That energy reserves are a meaningful predictor of reproductive success in a sedentary passerine supports the idea that energy reserves are at least sometimes predictors of fitness. However, hematological indices failed to predict reproductive success and none of the indices predicted survival. Therefore, some but not all condition indices may be informative, but because we found that most indices did not predict any component of fitness, we question the ubiquitous interpretation of condition indices as surrogates for individual quality and fitness.  相似文献

A comparative study of 215 sedentary (no regular physical exercise undertaken) and 313 physically active (regular physical exercise undertaken) Bengalee boys aged 10-17 years was undertaken to investigate the differences in overall adiposity (body mass index), subcutaneous adiposity (skinfolds) and body composition (percent body fat, fat mass and fat mass index). Both groups had a similar age. The results revealed that boys who did not undertake regular physical exercise (NPE) had a significantly greater mean body mass index (BMI) compared with those who undertook regular physical exercise (PE); p < 0.001. The means for all the skinfolds as well as percent body fat (PBF), fat mass (FM) and fat mass index (FMI) were significantly higher among the NPE group. The percentile distributions of all these variables and indices were consistently higher among the NPE group. The results of ANOVA of physical exercise (PE = yes, NPE = no) and PBF, FM and FMI, with age as covariate, revealed that PE had a significant negative effect on all these measures of body composition even after controlling for the impact of age. The means in each case were greater among the NPE group. In conclusion, this study provided evidence that Bengalee boys, who undertook regular physical exercise, had significantly less adiposity compared with those who did not undertake regular physical exercise.  相似文献

To study the reproductive biology of Astyanax fasciatus (Cuvier, 1819) in Furnas Reservoir, Minas Gerais, Brazil, a total of 1307 specimens were captured in bimonthly sampling from August 1993 to July 1994. The sex ratio showed a predominance of females, representing 65.2% of the total sample. The stages of gonadal maturation and spawning type were determined through macro- and microscopic analysis of the gonads as well as by variation in the gonadosomatic indices. A . fasciatus showed fractionated spawning and reproduction throughout the year, with spawning peaks influenced by water temperature and rainfall. Males and females initiated gonadal maturation at a mean standard length of 6.4 and 6.5 cm, respectively. During gonadal maturation, females showed a reduction in hepatosomatic index (from 1.06 to 0.83), suggesting that hepatic substances are transferred from the liver to the ovaries. In the reproductive period, A. fasciatus had lower stomach repletion and coelomic fat indices, indicating that this species ate less and consumed more fat reserves when reproduction had the maximum GSI (11.3 for females and 2.7 for males). Weight of the ovaries had a positive influence on the condition factor (K1), as the lowest K2 value (weight without gonads) were obtained during maturation, confirming the influence of the ovaries upon the physiological condition of the females. In weight–length relationship, parameter b was 3.02 for females and 2.23 for males, and the correlation coefficient ( r 2) was 0.84 and 0.66, respectively.  相似文献

A comparative study was conducted between two independent methods to estimate body fat in 13 college male distance-runners (20.2 +/- 1.1 yrs) and 11 male college students (19.6 +/- 0.7 yrs) as control group. The methods dealt with different body component parameters. Body fat was estimated (1) in terms of total body water based on the analysis of dilution of orally ingested deuterium oxide (D2O) in urine, and (2) in terms of body density based on underwater weighing. The results were as follows: 1) The skinfold thickness at 14 sites in distance-runners were thinner than those in control group. The mean values for subcutaneous fat in distance-runners were 4.3 +/- 0.7 kg (7.2 +/- 1.1%), which were lower than those (8.3 +/- 2.7 kg & 13.3 +/- 3.4%) in control group significantly. Oh the other hand, the mean values for internal fat in distance-runners were 8.7 +/- 1.4 kg (14.4 +/- 1.6%), which were larger than those (6.5 +/- 3.1 kg & 10.2 +/- 4.3%) in control group. 2) The mean values for percent body fat in control group were 16.1 +/- 1.6% by skinfolds method, 20.2 +/- 5.1% by body density method and 23.5 +/- 4.6% by total body water method. The estimated values of percent body fat by the methods of body density and total body water were approximately the same. 3) The mean values for percent body fat in distance-runners were 11.9 +/- 1.4% by skinfolds method, 11.8 +/- 1.7% by body density method and 21.5 +/- 1.9% by total body water method. The estimated values of percent body fat in distance-runners were lower than those in control group.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Measuring body lipids and proteins of wild animals such as mallards is essential to determine the impact of the environment on their body condition. A major difficulty, however, is that biochemical analysis of carcass is tedious and therefore cannot be applied at a large scale. The main objective of this study was therefore to find out if simple measurements can be used as indices of total body lipids and proteins. Four classes of lipid and protein indices, derived on a 'source' group, were defined according to their complexity and condition of application (field or laboratory). Accuracy of the indices was evaluated on an independent group, of which the body composition calculated from indices was compared to carcass analysis. In live birds, body mass was an accurate and convenient predictor for both lipid and protein masses. If carcasses are available, extensive analysis provides a higher accuracy for body lipids only. This can be simply obtained through multiple regressions using abdominal fat mass and/or dry body mass.  相似文献

Non-invasive techniques to measure body composition are critical for longitudinal studies of energetics and life histories and for investigating the link between body condition and physiology. Previous attempts to determine, non-invasively, the body composition of snakes have proven problematic. Therefore, we explored whether dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) could be used to determine the body composition of snakes. We analyzed 20 adult diamondback water snakes (Nerodia rhombifer) with a DXA instrument and subsequently quantified their body composition by gravimetric and chemical extraction methods. Body composition components scaled with body mass with mass exponents between 0.88 and 1.53. DXA values for lean tissue mass, fat mass and total-body bone mineral mass were significantly correlated with observed masses of lean tissue, fat and ash from chemical analysis. Using regression models incorporating DXA values we predicted the fat-free tissue mass, lean tissue mass, fat mass, ash mass and total body water content for this sample of water snakes. A cross-validation procedure demonstrated that these models estimated fat-free tissue mass, lean tissue mass, fat mass, ash mass and total-body water content with respective errors of 2.2%, 2.3%, 16.0%, 6.6% and 3.5%. Compared to other non-invasive techniques, include body condition indices, total body electrical conductivity (TOBEC) and cyclopropane absorption, DXA can more easily and accurately be used to determine the body composition of snakes.  相似文献

According to the genic capture hypothesis, the maintenance of additive genetic variation in fitness-related traits is due to both condition-dependence of these traits and high genetic variation for condition. Evidence supporting this latter assumption is scarce. In this study, we investigated, using hemiclonal analysis, standing genetic variation for condition and relative adult fitness in male Drosophila melanogaster (Meigen) (Diptera: Drosophilidae). The absolute fat and the relative fat content were used as indices of body condition and were measured along with adult relative fitness from males reared in high or low larval densities. The results did not demonstrate genetic variation for condition or adult relative fitness. However, the larval density encountered during development had a strong and significant effect on all traits. Surprisingly, although not significant, negative selection gradients acting on absolute fat and relative fat content were also found in both treatments. These findings challenge one of the main assumptions of the genic capture hypothesis and the use of fat content as an ideal index of condition.  相似文献

Accurate assessment of fat intake is essential to examine the relationships between diet and disease risk but the process of estimating individual intakes of fat quality by dietary assessment is difficult. Tissue and blood fatty acids, because they are mainly derived from the diet, have been used as biomarkers of dietary intake for a number of years. We review evidence from a wide variety of cross-sectional and intervention studies and summarise typical values for fatty acid composition in adipose tissue and blood lipids and changes that can be expected in response to varying dietary intake. Studies in which dietary intake was strictly controlled confirm that fatty acid biomarkers can complement dietary assessment methodologies and have the potential to be used more quantitatively. Factors affecting adipose tissue and blood lipid composition are discussed, such as the physical properties of triacylglycerol, total dietary fat intake and endogenous fatty acid synthesis. The relationship between plasma lipoprotein concentrations and total plasma fatty acid composition, and the use of fatty acid ratios as indices of enzyme activity are also addressed.  相似文献

We investigated the relationships between blubber content and a suite of condition indices in harp seals (Phoca groenlandica). Although blubber content was significantly correlated with xiphosternal blubber depth and Condition index they were insensitive indicators of condition. Blubber depth was most variable at a site ca. 60–70% down the length of the body and a more recent index incorporating length, mass and blubber depth devised for phocids was an improved indicator of blubbler mass. Blubber volume was calculated in three ways based on a geometric approximation of a cylinder and also via truncated cones. The cone method accounted for more variance than the other methods although it overestimated blubber mass. Surface area was ascertained using the girth measurements of serial cones and was significantly correlated with total body mass and total body water. We suggest that estimates of total body water generated from surface area could be used to calculate total fat mass and lean body mass  相似文献

Background

Limited data have indicated that body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist to hip ratio (WHR) and waist to height ratio (WHtR) of athletes and young adults provide misleading results concerning body fat content. This study was aimed at the evaluation of the relationship between different surrogate indices of fatness (BMI, WC, WHR, WHtR and body adiposity index (BAI)) with the percentage of body fat in Polish students with respect to their sex and physical activity.

Methods

A total of 272 students volunteered to participate in the study. Of these students, 177 physical education students (90 males and 87 females) were accepted as active (physical activity of 7 to 9 hours/week); and 95 students of other specializations (49 males and 46 females) were accepted as sedentary (physical activity of 1.5 hours/week). Weight, height, waist and hip circumferences were measured, and BMI, WHR, WHtR and BAI were calculated. Body fat percentage was assessed using four skinfold measurements.

Results

Classification of fatness according to the BMI and the percentage of body fat have indicated that BMI overestimates fatness in lean subjects (active men and women, sedentary men), but underestimates body fat in obese subjects (sedentary women). In all groups, BMI, WHR, WHtR and BAI were significantly correlated with the percentage of body fat (with the exception of WHR and hip circumference in active and sedentary women, respectively). However, coefficients of determination not exceeding 50% and Lin’s concordance correlation coefficients lower than 0.9 indicated no relationship between measured and calculated body fat.

Conclusion

The findings in the present study support the concept that irrespective of physical activity and sex none of the calculated indices of fatness are useful in the determination of body fat in young adults. Thus, it seems that easily calculated indices may contribute to distorted body image and unhealthy dietary habits observed in many young adults in Western countries, but also in female athletes.  相似文献

Non-invasive three-dimensional imaging of live rodents is a powerful research tool that has become critical for advances in many biomedical fields. For investigations into adipose development, obesity, or diabetes, accurate and precise techniques that quantify adiposity in vivo are critical. Because total body fat mass does not accurately predict health risks associated with the metabolic syndrome, imaging modalities should be able to stratify total adiposity into subcutaneous and visceral adiposity. Micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) acquires high-resolution images based on the physical density of the material and can readily discriminate between subcutaneous and visceral fat. Here, a micro-CT based method to image the adiposity of live rodents is described. An automated and validated algorithm to quantify the volume of discrete fat deposits from the computed tomography is available. Data indicate that scanning the abdomen provides sufficient information to estimate total body fat. Very high correlations between micro-CT determined adipose volumes and the weight of explanted fat pads demonstrate that micro-CT can accurately monitor site-specific changes in adiposity. Taken together, in vivo micro-CT is a non-invasive, highly quantitative imaging modality with greater resolution and selectivity, but potentially lower throughput, than many other methods to precisely determine total and regional adipose volumes and fat infiltration in live rodents.  相似文献

The recent characterization of brown fat in humans has generated much excitement on the possibility that increased energy expenditure by heat production by this tissue will be able to reduce obesity. This expectation has largely been stimulated by studies with mice that show strong associations between increased brown fat activity and reductions in obesity and insulin resistance. Research in the mouse has been largely based upon the induction or suppression of brown fat and mitochondrial uncoupling protein by genetic methods. The review of this research literature underscores the idea that reductions in obesity in mice are secondary to the primary role of brown adipose tissue in the regulation of body temperature. Given that the variation in brown fat in humans, as detected by PET imaging, is highly associated with administration of adrenergic agonists and reductions in ambient temperature, the effects on obesity in humans may also be secondary to the regulation of body temperature. Induction of thermogenesis by reduced ambient temperature now becomes like muscle and physical activity, another natural method of increased energy expenditure to combat obesity. Furthermore, there is no evidence to indicate that heat production by adrenergic stimulation via cold exposure or drug treatment or the enriched physical environment is restricted to the thermogenic activity of the brown adipocyte. This article is part of a Special Issue entitled: Modulation of Adipose Tissue in Health and Disease.  相似文献
