After lambing forty-five ewes were allocated to three groups, two of sixteen and one of thirteen ewes. The lambs of the two groups of sixteen ewes were weaned on Day 1 after lambing and the ewes were fed a diet of 100% (Group H) or 50% (Group R) of maintenance energy requirements. The thirteen ewes in the third group (Group L) suckled twin lambs and were fed freely. During the first 3 weeks after lambing, oestrus was observed for 11/16 (Group H) and 8/16 (Group R) ewes; of the ewes which had shown oestrus in the two groups, ovulation occurred in 5/8 and 5/7 respectively. Only 1/13 Group-L ewes showed oestrus and ovulated during the same period. The mean plasma concentrations of progesterone and LH were unaffected by the treatments and were around 0-4 and 1-5 ng/ml, respectively. Restricted feeding had no effect on oestrus, ovulation or the hormone levels during the oestrus cycle following synchronization. The onset of oestrus and the start of the preovulatory discharge of LH were 3 and 6 hr later, respectively, in the lactating ewes (Group L) than in those in Groups H and R. Ewes in Group L also had a higher ovulation rate, 2-8 +/- 0-2 versus 2-1 +/- 0-2 (P less than 0-05). Restricted feeding reduced the number of ewes lambing; only 1/11 ewes in Group R, considered to have conceived because of the presence of high progesterone levels 17 days after mating, subsequently lambed compared with 6/12 in Group H and 5/9 in Group L.  相似文献

Thirty adult Mule (Blue-faced Leicester x Swaledale) ewes were actively immunized against a synthetically produced peptide corresponding to the N-terminus of the alpha-subunit of bovine inhibin conjugated to tuberculin purified protein derivative (PPD). Primary immunization in the late anoestrous period was followed by two booster injections at 5 week intervals. Control groups were either not immunized (n = 15) or received PPD only (n = 15). Ten days after the second booster, oestrus was synchronized using progestagen sponges and ovulation rate was assessed by laparoscopy on days 9-10 of the cycle. Blood samples were taken at the time of each immunization and immediately before laparoscopy. Ewes were mated with fertile rams in mid-November and the resulting conception, pregnancy and lambing rates monitored. All inhibin-immunized ewes generated antibodies that bound 125I-labelled native bovine inhibin (M(r) 32,000), and their plasma follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) concentrations after the second booster were significantly higher than the preimmunization values (30%; P less than 0.001) and the corresponding value in the controls (25%; P less than 0.025). Inhibin immunization was associated with a 90% increase in ovulation rate (P less than 0.005) and had no adverse effect on conception rate (100%), pregnancy rate (100%) or length of gestation (146 days). However, only a 37% increase (P less than 0.05) in lambing rate was recorded for inhibin-immunized ewes, indicating a higher incidence of wastage of ova, or embryos, or both, in these ewes.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Ewes with cervical ovarian autotransplants were studied after PGF-2alpha-induced luteal regression in November and February (mid- and late-breeding season) and June (anoestrum). Progesteron and oestradiol-17beta secretion rates and LH concentrations were determined in serial ovarian venous blood samples and the ewes were frequently tested for oestrus. All 4 ewes in November and 3 of the 4 ewes in February exhibited oestrus and endocrine changes indicative of ovulation. The remaining ewe in February and the three ewes in June failed to show elevated oestradiol-17beta secretion rates after luteal regression, indicating the absence of follicles in the final stages of maturation. The preovulatory rise in the oestradiol-17beta secretion rate, the LH surge and the display of oestrus all occurred earlier, with respect to the PGF-2alpha infusion, in November than in February, suggesting a greater stimulation of folliculogenesis, and therefore a greater availability of maturing follicles, in November than in February.  相似文献

The influence of Gn-RH, hCG and a PMSG-hCG mixture (PG600) on the time of ovulation, ovulation rate and on the occurrence of oestrus in ewes treated with progestagen-impregnated sponges for 12 days examined. The effects of Gn-RH analogues on plasma LH, oestrus, ovulation and conception rate were also investigated. Six separate experiments were carried out. When 50 micrograms Gn-RH were given 24 h after sponge removal ovulation occurred in 44--46% of ewes within 24 h and in all ewes by 34 h. Gn-RH was a more potent ovulation synchronizer than hCG. Both hCG and PG600 reduced the incidence of overt oestrus. Gn-RH also had this effect in ewes treated during February and May but not in August and September. Gn-RH analogues given 2 days before sponge removal significantly increased ovulation rate. The display of oestrus was not affected in ewes treated 2 days before sponge removal but was suppressed in 43-69% of ewes treated with an analogue at the time of sponge removal. Ovulation occurred in 50-62% of ewes within 30-35 h of injection of Gn-RH analogues, regardless of the time of their administration. The release of LH in response to one analogue was not influenced by the presence of the progestagen-impregnated sponge in the vagina. When given a Gn-RH analogue 2 days before sponge removal or at the time of sponge removal 63 and 62% of mated ewes became pregnant compared with 70% of control ewes.  相似文献

This study examined the effects of melatonin and level of nutrition on embryo yield during anestrous and breeding season. Adult Rasa Aragonesa ewes were assigned randomly to one of the four treatment groups in two experiments using a 2x2x2 factorial design. Individuals were treated (+MEL) or not treated (-MEL) with a subcutaneous implant of melatonin for 42d (Melovine, CEVA) and fed 1.5 (control, C) or 0.5 (low, L) times the daily maintenance requirements for 20d. Ewes were mated at oestrus (Day=0) and embryos were recovered on Day 5. Level of nutrition and melatonin supplements did not have a significant effect on ovulation rate or the number of recovered ova per ewe in the Reproductive Season (RS) and the Anestrous Season (AS). During the RS, undernutrition reduced the number of viable embryos per ewe (C: 1.1+/-0.2; L: 0.6+/-0.2; P<0.05); however, the number of viable embryos per ewe in the L+MEL group (0.2+/-0.15) was significantly lower than it was in the L, C+MEL and C groups (0.9+/-0.3, 1.2+/-0.3, 1.0+/-0.4, respectively; P<0.05). In the AS, nutrition did not have a significant effect on the number of viable embryos per ewe, although melatonin supplements might have improved rates slightly. Embryo viability rate (% viable embryos/embryos recovered) was unaffected by melatonin supplements or level of nutrition in the RS and the AS. Season had a strong effect on the number of viable embryos per functional corpus luteum among ewes in the L+MEL group, only (RS: 0.2+/-0.1; AS: 0.6+/-0.2; P<0.05). In conclusion, undernutrition impaired the viability of sheep embryos in the RS, particularly among ewes that were given melatonin supplements subcutaneously, but melatonin appeared to improve embryo quality in the AS, which suggests that the mechanisms involved in the interactive effects of melatonin and nutrition on embryo development are influenced by season.  相似文献

Twenty-four Beni-Guil and twenty-six Sardi ewes were regularly checked for oestrus during 19 consecutive months following lambing using penis-deviated rams and for ovulation by endoscopy or plasma progesterone level. Fifty percent of the Beni-Guil and Sardi ewes had a first ovulation at 41 and 71 days and first oestrus at 85 and 132 days, respectively. The seasonal anoestrus in both breeds occurs from February to May and is characterized essentially by a lack of expression of oestrous behaviour.Compared to other breeds located at higher latitudes, the two breeds studied showed a more rapid resumption of sexual activity following lambing and a seasonal anoestrus of reduced length and intensity.  相似文献

Ewes were immunized against androstenedione (Fecundin) and assigned to be mated 14 days (179 ewes Group C) or 25 days (174 ewes Group B) after a booster immunization with Fecundin. The anti-androstenedione titres at these times were 6790 and 3240 respectively (P less than 0.01). The remaining 169 ewes were untreated controls (Group A). Ewes were mated to entire rams (12 rams to 180 ewes) at their second oestrus after synchronization of oestrus. Immunization against androstenedione caused a shortening of the time from sponge removal to mating (Day 0) and a decrease in the percentage of ewes mated by the rams. Also, ovulation rate was increased after immunization (P less than 0.01), being 1.42, 2.16 and 1.93 for Groups A, C and B respectively. Egg recovery rates on Day 2 were lower in immunized ewes and there was some indication that fertilization rates were lowered. On Day 13 after mating a higher proportion of blastocysts was recovered from ewes in Group A than from those in Groups B and C. Immunization resulted in lower fertilization rates and smaller blastocysts with lower mitotic indexes (P less than 0.01). At Days 24-32 of pregnancy fetal weight was lower in the immunized ewes. At all sampling stages, the proportion of ewes pregnant (fertility) was lowered in immunized ewes. The results of the present study show that significant reproductive wastage occurs in androstenedione-immunized Merino ewes, with lower rates of embryo recovery and delayed embryonic development being found in comparison to controls.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

To identify reasons for low fertility in the Merino in South Australia, we defined the extent and sources of reproductive wastage in flocks of maiden (n=14) and mature age (n=54) Merino ewes managed on 43 properties over 4 year. In a second study, reproductive wastage was examined in a very high ovulating flock of mature age South Australian Merino ewes heterozygous for the FecB gene, mated to lamb in either the autumn or spring. Losses in the latter flock were examined in less detail than the large-scale study, but allowed wastage to be partitioned between pre- and peri/post-natal sources. In the first experiment, reproductive wastage between mating and weaning was estimated at 59.7 potential lambs or ova lost per 100 ewes exposed to rams, representing 42.4% of ova shed. The main source of wastage occurred at lambing (55.6% of total loss), with death of twins a major contributor (35.3% of total loss). Other important sources of wastage were from partial failure of multiple ovulation (PFMO; 20.4% of total loss) and from ewes mating but not lambing (13.2% of total loss). Reproductive wastage did not vary with either age of ewe (maiden versus mature) or season of mating (October-December versus January-March). Mean ovulation rate, estimated as 141 per 100 ewes ovulating (range 100-200), varied with age of ewe (129 versus 144; maiden versus mature) but not with season of mating or year (1990-1991). Values for fertility, fecundity and lamb survival were 90, 127 and 73%, respectively. Fecundity of maiden ewes was lower than that of mature ewes (116 versus 130). Survival of single and twin lambs between birth and tail docking was 83 and 56%, respectively. Net reproductive efficiency, or lambs weaned per 100 ewes exposed to rams, averaged 81 (range 31-122). In the second experiment, mean ovulation rate of FecB Merino ewes was 316 per 100 ewes ovulating, with 242 ova (potential lambs) lost between ovulation and tail docking. This loss was equally shared between pre- and peri/post-natal sources (123 versus 119), and demonstrates severe limitation of the Merino to successfully bear and rear multiple litters. We concluded that future research in commercial Merino flocks be focused on lamb mortality, particularly of twins, and on PFMO, the major source of embryo loss.  相似文献

The response to superovulatory (SOV) and estrus synchronization (ES) treatments and the fertility of donor (n=68) and recipient (n=118) Saloia ewes was evaluated in the fall and spring breeding seasons. The proportion of acyclic ewes at treatment time was significantly higher in the spring than in the fall (42.6% versus 4.0%, P<0.00001). Donors treated with eCG had a significantly higher mean number of follicles over 5mm in diameter in the ovaries at embryo recovery and a significantly lower mean efficiency of recovery than FSH-treated ewes. These negative effects were more pronounced in the fall than in the spring, which resulted in a significantly lower mean number of total and fertilized ova recovered from eCG-treated ewes, compared to FSH donors in the fall, but not in the spring. Season had no significant effect on the ovulation rate and plasma P4 concentrations of recipients treated with a progestagen plus eCG combination. Although the recipient lambing and embryo survival rates were higher in the fall than in the spring the differences were not significant. No significant differences were observed in the ovulation rate or P4 concentrations of recipients that lambed compared to those that did not lamb. These preliminary results show that, in Portugal, response of Saloia ewes to SOV or ES treatments and donor fertility following the SOV treatment were similar in the spring and the fall, which suggests that in the spring acyclic ewes are in moderate anestrus. The effect of season on fertility following embryo transfer should be confirmed in further studies involving a larger number of animals. The semilaparoscopic transfer method reported here allowed lambing and embryo survival rates higher (although not significantly) than a standard surgical approach.  相似文献

In three experiments, the onset of oestrus, time of ovulation and lambing after intrauterine insemination with frozen-thawed semen were examined following synchronisation of oestrus using intravaginal progestagen-impregnated sponges (inserted for 12 days) and an injection of PMSG at sponge removal.

The number (and percentage) of ewes detected in oestrus 12, 24, 36, 48, 60 and 72 h after sponge removal was 1 (0.3), 2 (0.6), 17 (5.2), 120 (36.7), 65 (20.0) and 10 (3.1) respectively. One hundred and twelve ewes (34.3%) remained unmarked. Egg fertilisation rates were not different between ewes irrespective of time of onset of oestrus or whether or not ewes were marked.

The median time of ovulation with respect to sponge removal (with 95% fiducial limits) for ewes joined with vasectomised rams (10:1) at spronge removal (teased ewes) was 55.8 h (54.61–57.09) and for unteased ewes 59.7 h (58.27–61.12).

In the third experiment, a total of 394 ewes were inseminated by laparoscopy with frozen-thawed semen. The percentage of ewes lambing and lambs born per ewe inseminated, and number of lambs born per ewe lambing for inseminations 48, 60, 72 and 78 h after sponge removal were 45.9, 57.7 and 1.25; 55.1, 72.0 and 1.31; 57.4, 80.9 and 1.41; and 39.3, 60.7 and 1.54, and for 59 control ewes receiving fresh semen by cervical insemination 47.5, 69.5 and 1.46 respectively. The lambing data after insemination with frozen semen was not different to that of the controls. The percentage of ewes lambing and lambs born per ewe inseminated increased with time of insemination at 48, 60 and 72 h (linear, P < 0.01) but was lower for inseminations at 78 h after sponge removal. Number of lambs born per ewe lambing increased with time of insemination after sponge removal (linear, P < 0.05).  相似文献

The effects of active immunization against oestradiol-17 beta on the ovarian response to pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin (PMSG) was investigated in Merino ewes. Immunized (79) and control (41) ewes were synchronized with intravaginal sponges, given either 750 or 1500 i.u. PMSG and then mated to rams or inseminated laparoscopically with fresh diluted semen. All control ewes mated naturally exhibited oestrus and 40 out of 41 control ewes ovulated. The ovulation rate was higher in the controls receiving 1500 i.u. PMSG than in those ewes which received 750 i.u. PMSG (10.2 v. 3.3). Immunization against oestradiol-17 beta resulted in antibody titres varying from 100 to more than 100 000 in plasma taken 1-4 days after mating. The ovarian response increased significantly in the lowest titre group (100-1000) in conjunction with stimulation with 1500 i.u. PMSG. In these ewes the ovulation rate increased over controls (16.7 v. 10.2) as did the total ovarian response, which includes follicles greater than 10 mm diameter (22.3 v. 11.1). The total ovarian response was also increased in those ewes given 750 i.u. PMSG which had titres in the 1000-10 000 and 10 000-100 000 range, but this was not accompanied by significant increases in the ovulation rate. In general, the higher titre levels (greater than 1000) were correlated with decreases in the proportion of ewes showing oestrus and ovulating and in the embryo recovery rate. The 1500 i.u. PMSG treatment group with the highest titres (greater than 10 000) also showed a significant drop in the ovulation rate as compared to the 1500 i.u. PMSG controls.  相似文献

The establishment of ovarian activity during lactation was studied in the postpartum period of Rambouillet, Dorset and Finnish Landrace ewes following lambing during the month of October (1981). The mean postpartum intervals to first ovulation and first estrus were 22.7 and 53.0 for Rambouillets, 25.2 and 51.0 for Dorsets, and 22.5 and 49.7 days for Finnish Landrace ewes. Estrus was not associated with the first ovulation postpartum in any breed. The number of silent ovulations prior to the first estrus was highest in the Rambouillet and lowest in Finnish Landrace breeds. Of the 18 ewes in the project, 14 had normal luteal phase lengths, 1 had a possible short luteal phase and 3 had prolonged luteal phases following the first ovulation postpartum. The first service conception rate of all ewes bred was 82% (14 17 ) at an average of 52 days postpartum. The lambing rate following the autumn breeding was higher (2.14 +/- 0.14) than the lambing rate which followed the previous spring breeding (1.28 +/- 0.11).  相似文献

Three experiments were undertaken to investigate the effect of a pre-mating ram exposure during progestagen synchronisation treatment on time of breeding, ovulation rate, embryo quality and fertility and any interaction with time of ram introduction for breeding post sponge withdrawal. Crossbred ewes in experiment 1a (n = 348), 1b (mule; n = 133) and 2 (n = 58) underwent a 12-14 days synchronisation protocol. Three days prior to sponge withdrawal ewes were divided into Control (ewes in continued isolation from rams) or +Ram (ram-exposed) groups. Rams were introduced to +Ram ewes and remained with ewes until sponge withdrawal. Ewes in experiments 1a and 2 received eCG at sponge withdrawal and were reintroduced to rams at either 36 or 48 h post sponge removal (PSR). In experiment 1b, ewes did not receive eCG and were reintroduced to rams at 24 h PSR. In experiments 1a and 1b time of breeding, date of lambing and litter size were recorded. In experiment 2, ewes were slaughtered 5 days post breeding, reproductive tracts flushed and corpora lutea, ova and embryos assessed. Fewer +Ram ewes were mated by 96 h PSR (P < 0.001) than Control ewes in experiment 1a but not when rams were introduced earlier in experiment 1b. In experiment 1a, ram introduction at 36 h PSR improved conception to first service compared to introduction at 48 h PSR (P < 0.01) in both +Ram and Control groups. In experiments 1a and 1b, +Ram ewes had reduced litter size caused by more single births (1a; P < 0.001, 1b; P < 0.01). In experiment 2, +Ram ewes had fewer corpora lutea than Control ewes (P < 0.001) but embryo quality was similar. However, more good embryos were produced when rams were introduced for breeding at 36 h compared to 48 h PSR (P < 0.001). We conclude that a pre-mating ram exposure during the synchronisation treatment reduced the number of ewes mated at and conceiving to the first service. This was partially overcome by introducing rams for breeding earlier (24 or 36 h compared to 48 h PSR) but the most dramatic decrease in fertility was due to a reduction in ovulation rate in the ram-exposed ewes.  相似文献

The effects of active immunization against progesterone on reproductive activity were studied in Merino ewes. Immunization against progesterone caused a shortening (P less than 0.01) of the interval between ovulations from 17-18 days (controls) to between 6 and 10 days (immunized group); this was associated with a corresponding reduction in the interval between LH surges. The immunized ewes also had higher (P less than 0.05) ovulation rates (1.72) than controls (1.25) and exhibited a reduced (P less than 0.01) incidence of oestrus (26% v. 95%). Many immunized ewes continued to ovulate despite the persistence of corpora lutea from earlier ovulations which led to an accumulation on the ovaries of many corpora lutea of different ages. The frequency of LH pulses in ewes immunized against progesterone (1.8 +/- 0.2 pulses/4 h) was significantly (P less than 0.001) higher than that of control ewes (0.3 +/- 0.1 pulses/4 h). This study highlights the importance of progesterone in the control of oestrus, ovulation, ovulation rate, luteal regression and the secretion of LH in the ewe.  相似文献

Gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) treatment was examined as a means of improving the efficacy of embryo collection in the sheep following intrauterine insemination of frozen-thawed semen. In summary, treatment consistently improved fertilization rates and the number of fertilized ova collected per ewe was enhanced compared with untreated ewes. The yield of fertilized ova in ewes treated with follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) was maximized by administering GnRH 36 h after progestagen treatment; 24 h was the preferred time in ewes treated with pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG). There was a significant (P < 0.001) increase in the percentage of unfertilized ova in the former treatment when GnRH was given at 24 h. An examination of the time of insemination (0, 6, 12 and 18 h before the median time of ovulation) indicated that fertilization rates were highest when insemination occurred at 6 h in both GnRH-treated ewes and in untreated ewes. In GnRH-treated ewes, the recovery of ova was lowest when insemination occurred at the time of ovulation. The number of motile frozen-thawed spermatozoa required for fertilization following treatment was estimated to be approximately 20 x 10(6) per uterine horn. GnRH-treatment also improved the yield of fertilized ova in sheep that were naturally mated, although this yield was lower than that obtained with intrauterine insemination of frozen-thawed semen. It is concluded that fertilization failure, a major problem in sheep embryo collection, can be eliminated through judicious use of GnRH treatment and properly timed intrauterine insemination.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to examine the effect of steroid-free bovine follicular fluid (bFF) on both ovulation and lambing rates. For this purpose, 30 adult ewes of the Karaguniki breed were randomly allocated to three treatment groups (A,B and C; n=10 ewes each) during the breeding season of 1988. The ewes in Group A received bFF (6 ml iv) twice daily during their luteal phase, starting on Day 5 and lasting until Day 9. The ewes in Group B received a mixture of bFF/arachid oil (3 ml sc, 2:1) on Days 3, 4, 5, 10 and 12 of the estrous cycle. The ewes in Group C (Controls) were treated subcutanecusly with a mixture of steroid-free bovine plasma and arachid oil (2:1) on the same days as the ewes in Group B. Plasma concentrations of progesterone showed that the luteal function during the treatment cycle was normal in all treated and control ewes. The ovulation and lambing rates, however, were greater in Group A (2.5 +/- 0.2 and 1.9 +/- 0.3, respectively) and in Group B (2.1 +/- 0.2 and 1.6 +/- 0.1, respectively) than in Group C (1.5 +/- 0.2 and 1.2 +/- 0.3, respectively). Precipitating antibodies were detected in the plasma of Group B ewes only.  相似文献

Two closed lines of sheep selected for high and low prolificacy were established in 1969. Rams within each line were selected on the basis of their dams' lambing records. Foundation ewes were assigned at random to selected rams, and no ewe selection was practiced until replacement yearlings were selected for mating. Selection of the rams used to mate the foundation ewes resulted in more lambs born per 100 ewes exposed to the ram (P<.10) and more lambs born per 100 ewes lambing from the high line rams (P<.05).Seven rams from each line were then used to estimate fertilization rate and embryonic survival rate when mated to an unrelated group of ewes. There was no difference in ovulation rate or fertilization rate of ewes mated to low and high line rams. Percent eggs recovered per CL was 80 and 92 (P<.01) for low and high line rams, respectively. At 35 days 82 and 86% of the ewes were pregnant, and 84 and 93% of the CL were represented by embryos in the pregnant ewes mated to low and high lines, respectively. Estimated embryonic survival rates were 81 and 89% in ewes mated to low and high line rams, respectively.  相似文献

We tested whether short periods of increased nutrition will improve ovulation rate and prolificacy, irrespective of the method used to synchronise the cycles of the ewes. In Experiment 1, we used 138 Corriedale ewes to evaluate two factors: synchronization treatment (sponges versus a single injection of prostaglandin) and type of pasture (native versus improved with Lotus corniculatus). Ewes were mated at the end of the grazing period and prolificacy was evaluated at lambing. Grazing Lotus corniculatus for 12 days tended to increase the number of twin lambs born (P=0.09). The percentage of ewes showing oestrus during a 9-day period was similar among synchronization treatments. Animals in Experiments 2 (n=282) and 3 (n=288) were allocated to a control group or a group fed a supplement of corn grain and soybean meal for 7 days. Ewes received 2 prostaglandin injections and the supplement was fed from Days 11 to 17 after the second prostaglandin. Ovulation rate was measured in 65 (Experiment 2) and 61 (Experiment 3) ewes that were confirmed to have consumed the supplement and showed oestrus in a 4-day period. The supplement increased ovulation rate by 14% in both experiments (P<0.05). We conclude that Corriedale ewes can respond with increases in prolificacy to a 12-day period grazing Lotus corniculatus and in ovulation rate to 7 days feeding with a supplement rich in energy and protein. Moreover, in these studies, prostaglandin was as effective as sponges for synchronising oestrus, an important factor in future decisions about hormonal management of fertility.  相似文献

The use of either 1 or 3 controlled internal drug release (CIDR) devices for progesterone priming in ewes (n=11) superovulated with 1500 IU pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin (PMSG) at 28 hours prior to CIDR device withdrawal was investigated in relation to the stages of development and viability of the ova produced. Progesterone levels in the ewes (n=6) treated with 3 CIDR devices were significantly higher (P<0.01) during the 11 days of insertion than in those (n=5) treated with 1 CIDR device (7.3 vs 3.3 ng/ml) over the same period. However, following superovulation, the mean (+/-SEM) ovulation rates were similar for both groups (8.2 +/- 1.7 vs 10.2 +/- 1.5). The number of ova (M+/-SEM) recovered by laparoscopy 5 days after insemination was 4.2 +/- 1.0 for ewes treated with 3 CIDR devices and 7.0 +/- 1.1 for those treated with 1 CIDR device (P<0.10). The respective ovum recovery rates (M+/-SEM) were 55+/-9.8 and 74+/-13.2%. There was no effect of progesterone concentration in the priming phase on either the stages of development of the recovered ova or on their ability to develop during in vitro culture. It was concluded, therefore, that progesterone concentrations within the range 3.3 +/- 0.1 to 7.3 +/- 0.3 ng/ml during the priming phase and 2.4 +/- 0.3 to 6.5 +/- 0.2 ng/ml at the time of PMSG administration did not affect the ovulation rate or the viability of ova recovered from superovulated ewes.  相似文献

Rasa Aragonesa ewes were used to evalutate whether treatment with melatonin implants in spring could modify: (i) the response to the male effect in terms of oestrous behaviour and ovulation rate; and (ii) the maintenance of sexual activity and ovulation rate at medium term, i.e. over the next 306 days. On 12 April, 42 ewes were divided into two groups, with (M; n = 21) or without (C; n = 21) a subcutaneous implant containing 18 mg melatonin. On 17 May (day 0), three aproned rams were introduced to each group to induce a ram effect. Ewes were observed for oestrus daily. The rams were removed 40 days later after which one aproned ram was introduced daily. Oestrous detection continued until 28 February, 306 days after the first male-female contact. The ovulation rate was determined by endoscopy in the first three cycles after ram introduction and in September-October and January. Progesterone was assayed from blood samples taken on 6 May, 10 and from day 0 to day 22 after ram introduction. Luteal activity before ram introduction was seen in 33% (M) and 29 (C)% of the ewes, respectively. Significantly more M ewes showed oestrous behaviour during the first 40 days after ram introduction (M: 100%; C: 62%; P < 0.01). Similar differences were observed for ewes anovulatory at ram introduction (M: 100%, C: 47%; P < 0.01). These differences were maintained over the three oestrous cycles in both groups. Treatment with melatonin implants was without detrimental effect on cyclic functions in the following breeding season, after seasonal anoestrus. Melatonin treatment significantly increased (P < 0.05) the mean ovulation rate of the first (1.62 +/- 0.11 versus 1.31 +/- 0.13), second (1.78 +/- 0.15 versus 1.36 +/- 0.15) and third cycles (M: 1.73 +/- 0.12 versus C: 1.27 +/- 0.14). There was a significant interaction between the effects of cyclicity at day 0 and melatonin treatment on the ovulation rate in the first cycle (P < 0.05). The mean ovulation rates of both groups were similar at the beginning (September) and middle (January) of the subsequent breeding season. Overall, the results confirmed that melatonin implants, combined with the ram effect, improved the reproductive parameters of reduced-seasonality ewes during spring mating, without impairing sexual activity or ovulation rate during the subsequent breeding season.  相似文献
