The toxicity of avermectin B, (abamectin) and cypermethrin was determined against fourth instar larvae of Plutella xylostella L. reared on three cabbage cultivars which differed in their suitability as host plants. Cabbage cultivars were assessed as hosts for P. xylostella on the basis of larval and pupal weight and adult fecundity. Larvae reared on the best host, the cabbage cv. Offenham Flower of Spring were significantly (P > 0.01) less sensitive to topically-applied abamectin (4.7-fold at LD50) or cypermethrin (2.3-fold) when compared with larvae reared on the intermediate host, the Savoy cabbage cv. Aquarius F1. Larvae reared on Offenham Flower of Spring were also significantly (P > 0.01) less sensitive (4.5-fold) to topically-applied abamectin compared with larvae reared on the poorest host tested, the cabbage cv. Minicole Fl. In contrast, the residual/ingestion toxicity of abamectin against fourth instars was significantly (P > 0.01) greater (2.5-fold at LC50) on Offenham Flower of Spring than on Minicole F1. The results are discussed in terms of larval weight and larval feeding rates on the different cabbage cultivars.  相似文献

Abstract Biological activity of an extract of the root of Stellera chameajasme with ethanol by dip (SCEE) against 5 insect pests, Pieris rapae, Plutella xylostella, Spodoptera litura, Myzus persicae , and Ostrina fumalis as tested. The LD, of stomach poison of SCEE against the fifth instar larvae of P. rapae was 12. 32 μarvae day 2 after treatment. With SCEE at concentration of 5, 2. 5 and 50 mg/mL, the fifth instar larvae of P. rapae , the third instar larvae of P. xylostella , and the third instar larvae of S. litura by disc leaf dipped method, had corrected mortalities of 100%, 31. 03 % and 16. 67 % 7 days after treatment respectively. The LC50 of SCEE against M. persicae was 0. 599 2 mg/mL after day 2 treatment by leaf dipped method. With SCEE at 10 mg/mL for the third instar larvae of O. furnucalis by mixture pesticide method, the corrected mortalities of 65. 52% and 85. 72% days 7 and day 14 after treatments respectively. The results showed that SCEE possessed strong biological activity to P. rapae, O. furnacalis , and M. persicae , while possessed weak biological activity to S. litura and P. xylostella .  相似文献

ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Entomopathogenic fungi isolated from pine caterpillars, as biological control agents were evaluated against the 5th instar larvae of silkworms, bombyx mori . The body weights of silkworm larvae were reduced by entomopathogenic fungi. Virulence of the spores isolated from the insects was more stronger than that of the spores isolated from media. LD50 value of the pathogen was 6,464x103 spores/ml. Entomopathogenic fungi, Beauveria , isolated from dead pine caterpillars was possible agents for use in microbiological control.  相似文献

Environmental risks of Bt maize, particularly pollen drift from Bt maize, were assessed for nontarget lepidopteran larvae in maize field margins. In our experimental approach, we carried out 3-year field trials on 6 ha total. Three treatments were used in a randomized block design with eight replications resulting in 24 plots: (i) near-isogenic control variety without insecticide (control), (ii) near-isogenic control variety with chemical insecticide (Baytroid) and (iii) Bt maize expressing the recombinant toxin. We established a weed strip (20 x 1 m) in every plot consisting of a Chenopodium album (goosefoot)/Sinapis alba (mustard) mixture. In these strips we measured diversity and abundance of lepidopteran larvae during maize bloom and pollen shed. C. album hosted five species but all in very low densities; therefore data were not suitable for statistical analysis. S. alba hosted nine species in total. Most abundant were Plutella xylostella and Pieris rapae. For these species no differences were detected between the Bt treatment and the control, but the chemical insecticide treatment reduced larval abundance significantly. Conclusions regarding experimental methodology and results are discussed in regard to environmental risk assessment and monitoring of genetically modified organisms.  相似文献

Three Nucleopolyhedrovirus (NPVs) originally isolated from Heliothis armigera larvae, collected from Portugal (HearNPV-PO) and two places in Spain (HearNPV-SP1 and HearNPV-SP2), and three previously described NPVs were compared biochemically and biologically. Restriction endonuclease analysis of the virus genome with several enzymes revealed that isolates HearNPV-SP1 and HearNVP-SP2 are unique but closely related genotypes which represent two new strains of the NPVs of H. armigera. The DNA fragment profiles of HearNPV-PO were distinct from those of the HearNPV-SP1 and HearNPV-SP2, with all the enzymes used, while they were identical to the Mamestra brassicae NPV strain present in the commercial product MAMESTRIN®. Bioassays in third-instar H. armigera larvae showed that the LD50 value obtained for HearNPV-SP1 (68 occlusion bodies/larva) was about two- and six-times lower than those of HearNPV-SP2 and a Russian isolate, HearNPV-RU, respectively. The corresponding LT50 values were not found to differ significantly between these three virus isolates at comparable doses.  相似文献

Two tritrophic systems were experimentally coupled in the present study. One system consisted of a cabbage plant ( Brassica oleracea ), diamondback moth larvae ( Plutella xylostella ) and their parasitic wasp ( Cotesia plutellae ). The other system consisted of a cabbage plant, cabbage butterfly ( Pieris rapae ) larvae and their parasitic wasp ( Cotesia glomerata ). First, we demonstrated that parasitism by C. glomerata and C. plutellae increased and decreased, respectively, on plants infested by both herbivore species than on plants infested by their host larvae alone. We then demonstrated that adult Pl. xylostella oviposited preferentially on plants infested with Pi. rapae , whereas adult Pi. rapae revealed no significant preferences between uninfested plants or plants infested with Pl. xylostella . Based on the present results and those of our previous study, we discuss the oviposition preferences of herbivores in tritrophic contexts.  相似文献

The sap flow (Jv) and the osmotic pressure-dependent hydraulic conductance (L0) of detached exuding root systems from paprika pepper plants (cv. Albar) were measured. Plants stressed with NaCl (30 m M ) and with six times the macronutrients of the Hoagland nutrient solution (6×HNS) were compared with controls grown in complete Hoagland nutrient solution. Jv of +NaCl and +6×HNS plants decreased markedly, but recovered to values similar to those of controls after removal of the treatments. Hydraulic conductance L0 was always less in NaCl plants than in controls and 6×HNS. A total increase in the ion concentration of the xylem (except Na+ and Cl) was observed with both treatments. In control and 6×HNS plants, HgCl2 treatment (50 μ M ) caused a sharp decline in L0 to values similar to those of NaCl-stressed roots, but were restored by treating with 5 m M dithiothreitol (DTT). However, in NaCl roots only a slight effect of Hg2+ and DTT was observed. In each treatment, there was no difference in the flux of K+ into the xylem after HgCl2 and DTT application. The results suggest that NaCl decreased L0 of the roots by reducing either the activity or abundance of Hg-sensitive water channels. The putative reduction in water-channel function of NaCl-treated plants did not seem to be due to the osmotic effect.  相似文献

Cross-mating was performed between subspecies of cabbage butterfly Pieris rapae crucivora from Japan and P. rapae rapae from New Zealand, whose females are known to reflect and absorb ultraviolet (UV) light, respectively. In the female F 1 hybrids UV reflectance was intermediate between the two parent females. Further, the UV reflectance was significantly higher in the female F 1 hybrids derived from females of the New Zealand subspecies than in those derived from females of the Japanese subspecies.  相似文献

Abstract  Lycoriella ingenua is one of the major pests of cultivated mushrooms, Agaricus bisporus (Lange) Imbach . Insecticide resistance among mushroom sciarid populations has been reported from other countries, and there is a need to determine the toxicity of currently approved and potential pesticides to sustain control of mushroom sciarid populations in Australia. The present study investigated the toxicity of six commercial formulations of insecticides or biopesticides against third instar larvae of L .  ingenua using laboratory bioassays. Insecticide treatments were incorporated into the growing medium for sciarid larvae and the concentration of the pesticide, which killed 90% of the test population (LD90) determined the efficacy of selected insecticides. Triflumuron was the most effective insecticide against L. ingenua with an LD90 of 53.12 mg active ingredient (a.i.)/m2 followed by cyromazine (LD90, 179.68 mg a.i./m2) and diazinon (LD90, 261.72 mg a.i./m2). Abamectin and Bacillus thuringiensis ssp. israelensis were ineffective against L. ingenua . Steinernema feltiae , an entomopathogenic nematode, reduced the number of third instar larvae of L. ingenua only when applied at a higher rate (LD90, 732 422 nematodes/m2) than was recommended on the label.  相似文献

The susceptibility of Blattella germanica (L.) in the Republic of Korea (ROK) to insecticides was evaluated under laboratory conditions using 12 insecticides currently used by the local public health centers and/or pest control operators in the ROK. The insecticides included seven pyrethroids and five organophosphates. Based on their LD50 values, the order of susceptibility of B. germanica adults to the insecticides was chlorpyrifos-methyl, profenofos and chlorpyrifos with values of 0.07, 0.29 and 0.88 µg/♀, respectively. The least susceptibility was obtained with tetramethrin at LD50 of 7.39 µg/♀. In the comparative resistance test, the resistance ratios (RR) of 12 insecticides were compared to each other using field-collected B. germanica adults in Seoul between 1993 and 2007. Blattella germanica demonstrated higher RRs to pyrethroids such as λ-cyhalothrin, and low RRs among the organophosphates. Among the pyrethroids, λ-cyhalothrin had the highest RRs of 111- and 129-fold differences at LD50 and LD90 values, respectively. Among the organophosphates, profenofos was observed to have the highest RRs of 4- and 15-fold differences at LD50 and LD90 values, respectively. However, there were no significant differences in susceptibility to tetramethrin, chlorpyrifos and fenitrothion. Blattella germanica was more susceptible to pyridafenthion showing a 0.7-fold difference in a resistance ratio (RRLD50= LD50 value of 2007/LD50 value of 1993). Resistance ratio of tetramethrin was low, but susceptibility was also not high.  相似文献

Fork length was measured in two groups of salmon parr (32–139 mm, frozen in a straight posture and frozen in a curved posture) before (L1) and after (L2) freezing and thawing. All the fish shrank. The decrease in length was significantly greater in the curved fish than the straight fish. The absolute reduction in length (L1–L2) was related directly to L1, whereas the percentage reduction in length [(L1–L2)/L1× 100] was related inversely to L1.  相似文献

The turnip sawfly, Athalia rosae Linnaeus, is a pest on cruciferous crops. Larvae sequester secondary plant compounds, namely glucosinolates, in their haemolymph. When attacked, their integument is easily disrupted and a droplet of haemolymph is exuded ('easy bleeding'). This has been shown to be an effective, chemical-based, defence against invertebrate predators. The efficiency of this proposed defence was tested against a vertebrate predator, using groups of the iguanid lizard Anolis carolinensis Voigt as a model predator. Caterpillars of Pieris rapae Linnaeus and Pieris brassicae Linnaeus served as control prey species that do not sequester glucosinolates. Lizards attacked far fewer sawfly larvae than pierid caterpillars. Several of the sawfly larvae were rejected after an initial attack, demonstrating unpalatability to the lizards, while the Pieris larvae were not rejected. However, P. rapae larvae topically treated with extracts of haemolymph of A. rosae had no deterrent effect on the lizards and no avoidance learning occurred over a period of two weeks. Adult sawflies do not easy bleed but have glucosinolates carried over from the larval stage. Lizards attacked them at a higher rate than larvae and they were never rejected. The results suggest that for the defensive effectiveness of the pest sawfly species against vertebrates the chemical cue is not necessarily sufficient. Movement and colour may be important additional factors triggering the behaviour of vertebrate predators.  相似文献

Two pectic lyases, L1 and L2, from culture liquids of Aureobasidium pullulans LV 10 were partially purified by ultrafiltration, CM-Sepharose 6B, DEAE-cellulose and/or Sephadex G 100 column chromatography, and characterized. L1 and L2 showed optimum activity at pH 5 and 7.5 respectively, and at 40°C. The molecular weights of the enzymes determined by gel filtration were estimated to be 89000 1000 and 55000 1000 for L1 and L2 respectively. Both lyases were activated by Ca2+ ions. L1 attacked highly esterified pectins, L2 attacked low methoxy-pectins in preference to polygalacturonic acid.  相似文献

Abstract Virulent and avirulent strains of Aeromonas spp. were identified and virulence quantified using an animal model. Virulence was measured by determining a 50% lethal dose (LD50) 43 h after oral administration of live bacteria. The LD50 of virulent Aeromonas isolates ranged from log10 7.53 (mean) organisms to log10 8.88 (mean). Some isolates were avirulent in this model. Detection of cytotoxic activity in culture supernatants correlated with virulence (Fisher exact test, P = 0.0029). There was no correlation between LD50 and the source of the isolate, β-haemolysis or lipopolysaccharide (LPS) banding profile on SDS-PAGE. In this animal model, virulence was multifactorial in that: (i) bacterial multiplication in the gut was associated with fatal infection; (ii) the increase in bacterial numbers in the gut of mice administered a lethal dose of bacteria was accompanied by accumulation of fluid; and (iii) there was evidence of extraintestinal spread of infection. Protection of suckling mice by rabbit antiserum to Aeromonas cell envelopes was observed.  相似文献

Abstract  1. Chrysoperla carnea is an important predatory insect in maize. To assess the ecological effects of Bt-maize, expressing the Cry1Ab protein, on larvae of this predator, the following factors were examined: (1) the performance of three prey herbivores ( Rhopalosiphum padi , Tetranychus urticae , and Spodoptera littoralis ) on transgenic Bt and non‐transgenic maize plants; (2) the intake of the Cry1Ab toxin by the three herbivores; and (3) the effects on C. carnea when fed each of the prey species.
2. The intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm) was used as a measure of performance for R. padi and T. urticae . No difference in this parameter was observed between herbivores reared on Bt or non‐transgenic plants. In contrast, a higher mortality rate and a delay in development were observed in S. littoralis larvae when fed Bt-maize compared with those fed the control maize plants.
3. The ingestion of Cry1Ab toxin by the different herbivores was measured using an immunological assay (ELISA). Highest amounts of Cry1Ab toxin were detected in T. urticae , followed by S. littoralis , and only trace amounts detected in R. padi .
4. Feeding C. carnea with T. urticae , which were shown to contain the Cry1Ab toxin, or with R. padi , which do not ingest the toxin, did not affect survival, development, or weight of C. carnea . In contrast, a significant increase in mortality and a delay in development were observed when predators were fed S. littoralis larvae reared on Bt-maize.
5. A combined interaction of poor prey quality and Cry1Ab toxin may account for the negative effects observed on C. carnea when fed S. littoralis . The relevance of these findings to the ecological risks of Bt-maize on C. carnea is discussed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. According to the different reactions to the juvenoid Altosid®, the last larval instar (L5) of Laspeyresia pomonella (L.) (Tortricidae) reared under 'long day' conditions (constant light) was subdivided into three sensitive phases: an additional larval instar, a larval–pupal intermediate, or a pupa. Under short day conditions, the prothoracotropic effect of juvenile hormone (JH) in L5, which have a continuous high titre of JH during the whole instar, indicated that it is not a particular titre of JH but a rise in the titre that can induce the production of moulting hormone. Neck-ligation experiments showed that JH acts not directly on the prothoracic glands but via the head, probably via the neurosecretory system. The meaning of the JH-peak in mature L5 reared under long days was determined either by injections with the anti-JH, precocene II, in combination with applications of Altosid, or by forcing precocene-treated larvae to a precocious moult by injecting them with ecdysterone. Precocene delayed, and JH accelerated pupation if administered 4.5 days after the L5 -moult. JH was also found to stimulate the growth and differentiation of the imaginal discs. Moulting hormone in long-days reared insects was detected one day after the larvae had spun their cocoon, with a maximum on the second day after spinning. The hormone was also present in freshly moulted pupae. Neck-ligation of mature larvae indicated that the delay between activation of the prothoracic glands and the production of an effective amount of moulting hormone is less than one day.  相似文献

Abstract— A microscale modification for the preparation of subcellular fractions employing milligram and submilligram amounts of neuronal tissue (brain nuclei and autonomic ganglia) is described.
Electron microscope characterization and enzymic studies were carried out on the six subcellular fractions of sympathetic ganglia of cat thus prepared.
The synaptosomal preparations obtained from individual ganglia were poorer in their nerve ending content than those obtained from brain by previous investigators. The highest RSA for AChE was found in layer L2 which was rich in membranes and vesicle components. ChAc activity was also highly concentrated in layers L2 and L3 (membranes, nerve ending-like particles, mitochondria and 'ghosts'). MAO activity was particularly high in the layers L4 and L5 which contained a large number of mitochondria. Layer L1 (membrane fragments) and particularly layer L6 which contained mainly collagen fibres, were low in activity of all three enzymes.
After preganglionic denervation, both ChAc and AChE activities were significantly reduced in the purest nerve ending fraction, L3 while MAO activity was practically unchanged.  相似文献
