Summary The neurosecretory system of the freshwater snail Bulinus truncatus was investigated. With the Alcian blue-Alcian yellow (AB/AY) staining method at least 10 different types of neurosecretory cells (NSC) were distinguished in the ganglia of the central nervous system. The differences in staining properties of the NSC — with AB/AY the cells take on different shades of green and yellow — are borne out at the ultrastructural level: the NSC types contain different types of neurosecretory elementary granules.The neurosecretory system of B. truncatus is compared to that of Lymnaea stagnalis, the species which has received the most attention among the pulmonates. It appears from the comparison that the systems of both species show many similarities, although some differences are also apparent.  相似文献

The nucleotide sequence of a mitochondrial genome of the pulmonate gastropod molluscCepaea nemoralis has been determined. Contained within the 14,100 basepairs (bp) are the two ribosomal RNA genes and 13 protein coding genes typical of metazoan mitochondrial genomes. TheCepaea mtDNA does contain a gene for ATPase subunit 8, like the clausiliid pulmonate,Albinaria, and the chiton,Katharina, but unlike the bivalve mollusc,Mytilus. The mitochondrial genetic code ofCepaea is proposed to be the same as that ofMytilus, Katharina, andDrosophila. Only 14 putative tRNA genes are presented, although there is sufficient unassigned sequence to encode the remainder of the expected total of 22 tRNA genes. These 14 tRNA genes are a mixture of standard cloverleaf structures and nonstandard structures containing TV replacement loops as seen in nematode and mosquito mitochondrial genomes. If the eight unidentified tRNA genes are indeed present, very little unassigned sequence would remain to serve as a control region. Genes are transcribed from both strands of the molecule. Base composition is the least biased for any reported animal mitochondrial genome and is also very little skewed between strands using measures independent of base composition. TheCepaea mitochondrial gene order is quite unlike that of any other reported metazoan mtDNA, with the exception of the recently reported partial sequences ofAlbinaria. No gene bound-aries are shared among all the reported molluscan taxa, demonstrating a complete lack of conservation of mitochondrial gene order across the phylum Mollusca.  相似文献

A comprehensive study of the anatomy, ecology and distribution of the orthurethran genus Draparnaudia confirms its family-group status, and suggests a probable sister-group relationship with another Pacific family, the Partulidae; its previous position as a subfamily of the Enidae is refuted. Draparnaudia is endemic to New Caledonia, but records from the New Hebrides are thought to result from introductions. A total of six species are recognized in the taxonomic revision, including two new species. Spermatophores are recorded for the first time.  相似文献

We characterized 10 variable microsatellite loci in the freshwater snail Biomphalaria kuhniana, as well as conditions for multiplexing and co-loading sets of loci. Two to five alleles were detected per locus over the two studied populations in Venezuela. High inbreeding coefficients suggest high selfing rates. Cross-species amplification provided some variability at eight and three loci in the other species belonging to the Biomphalaria straminea complex (B. straminea and B. intermedia), but was unsuccessful in more divergent species.  相似文献

We characterized 15 new variable microsatellites in the freshwater snail Pseudosuccinea (Lymnaea) columella, as well as conditions for multiplexing and simultaneously genotyping sets of loci. Two to six alleles were detected per locus over the six populations studied. Gene diversity ranged from 0.000 to 0.498, but essentially no heterozygous individuals were observed. This resulted in extremely high F(IS) estimates, and therefore high selfing rates. The F(ST) estimates ranged from 0.18 to 1 among populations, but was generally high. These markers will constitute efficient tools for investigating the population structure of this invasive species. Cross-species amplification was on the whole unsuccessful.  相似文献

Stable isotope tracers are a promising tool for investigating the ecology of terrestrial slugs, including predator‐prey relationships, migration behaviour, nutrient turnover and dietary routing. The objective of the present feasibility study was to label two economically important slug groups, Deroceras reticulatum and keeled slugs (families Limacidae and Milacidae, respectively), with the stable isotope 15N under controlled laboratory conditions. Significant isotopic enrichment in slug tissue was detected after 4 days and persisted for at least 10 days after slugs had been fed on 15N enriched food for a period of 15 days. The time course of 15N uptake into slug tissues and its relation to food consumption were well described mathematically. Estimated mean 15N assimilation efficiencies from labelled maize mixed with unlabelled wheat bran were 30% and 38%, respectively, for the species groups studied. These findings suggest that slugs can be readily and efficiently labelled and that it is feasible to devise protocols for producing large numbers of isotopically labelled slugs for use in ecological studies. A simple method is described for the collection and analysis of cutaneous mucus from individual slugs which can be used to test uniformity of isotopic labelling.  相似文献

Two to 11 alleles were detected per locus over the five populations studied, and up to eight alleles per locus and population. The observed heterozygosity was extremely low, most probably as the consequence of high selfing rates. The genetic differentiation among populations was large. These markers will constitute efficient tools for investigating the population structure in fragmented habitats. Eleven microsatellites were isolated in the freshwater snail Bulinus forskalii, intermediate host for the medically important trematode Schistosoma intercalatum. Characterization in 60 snails from three populations of B. forskalii from Cameroon revealed 4 to 18 alleles per locus. Low observed heterozygosity but higher expected heterozygosity, high FIS estimates, significant departures from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium and genotypic linkage disequilibria all indicate that B. forskalii is a preferential selfer. High FST estimates suggest that effective dispersal is limited and genetic drift is an important determinant of genetic structure. The potential utility of the microsatellite primers in other closely related Bulinus species was explored.  相似文献

Whereas the vast majority of gastropods possess dextral shell and body organization, members of the Clausiliidae family are almost exclusively sinistral. Within this group a unique feature of the alpine genus Alopia is the comparable representation of sinistral and dextral taxa, and the existence of enantiomorph taxon pairs that appear to differ only in their chirality. We carried out a molecular phylogenetic study, using mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene sequences, in order to find out whether chiral inversions are more frequent in this genus than in other genera of land snails. Our results revealed multiple independent inversions in the evolutionary history of Alopia and a close genetic relationship between members of the enantiomorph pairs. The inferred COI phylogeny also provided valuable clues for the taxonomic division and zoogeographical evaluation of Alopia species. The high number of inverse forms indicates unstable fixation of the coiling direction. This deficiency and the availability of enantiomorph pairs may make Alopia species attractive experimental models for genetic studies aimed at elucidating the molecular basis of chiral stability. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London  相似文献

Homing ability ofAchatina fulica was studied in the field by mark-recapture experiments. Snails hid in resting sites in the day and crept out in the rain or at night. Young adults dispersed for longer distance than old adults. Old adults seldom changed resting sites, while young adults changed them left almost every day. It was only young adults that the study site or came in from other areas. In transfer experiments, old adults returned to the initial resting sites in 5 days. These results suggest that old adults have a homing ability, while young adults do not show it clearly. The homing ability ofA. fulica is age-dependent. These differences may be related to the maturation pattern of the reproductive organ.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of the pedal muscle of the Megalobulimus oblongus is described. This muscle consists of transverse, longitudinal and oblique bundles ensheathed in collagenous tissue. Each muscle cell is also ensheathed by collagen. The smooth muscle cells contain thin and thick filaments; the thin filaments are attached to dense bodies. These cells contain a simple system of sarcoplasmic reticulum, subsarcolemmal caveolae and mitochondria with dense granules in the matrix, and glycogen. Three types of muscle cells were identified. Type A cells exhibited densely packed myofilaments, abundant glycogen rosettes, numerous mitochondria and sarcoplasmic reticulum profiles. Type B cells exhibited scanty glycogen and mitochondria, few cisternae of sarcoplasmic reticulum and large intermyofibrillar spaces. Type C cells exhibited intermediate characteristics between type A and type B cells. Neither nexus nor desmosomes were observed between the muscle cell membranes. The muscle contains well developed connective tissue and blood vessels. These structures and the distribution of muscle cells are probably involved in the muscular-hydrostat system. The muscle is richly innervated, having neuromuscular junctions with clear and electron-dense synaptic vesicles. The clear vesicles probably contain acetylcholine because the axons to which they are connected arise from acetylcholinesterase positive neurones of the pedal ganglion. The other vesicles may secrete monoamines such as serotonin and/or neuropeptides such as substance P.  相似文献

Immune defenses have been shown to be heavily involved in the evolution of physiological trade-offs. In this study, we compared the internal defense systems in two subspecies of the land snail Cornu aspersum that exhibit contrasting life-history strategies. The "fast-living" Cornu aspersum subsp. aspersa is widespread throughout the world, especially in ecosystems disturbed by man, whereas natural populations of the giant Cornu aspersum subsp. maxima, characterized by a longer life span, are present only in north Africa. Snails were experimentally challenged with Escherichia coli; the measurements used to assess their internal defense for cell- and humoral-mediated immune responses were bacterial clearance, hemocyte density, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and plasma antibacterial activity. Both subspecies showed a similar ability to clear bacteria from their hemolymph; however, they varied in the robustness of different individual immune components. Cornu aspersum aspersa had higher ROS activity than did C. a. maxima and lower plasma bactericidal activity. These results suggest that ecological factors can sculpt the immune response. One interpretation is that shorter life span selects for immune defenses such as ROS that, although effective, can cause long-term damage. Such different immune patterns obviously entail various costs involved in the strong intraspecific variation of life-history trade-offs we previously observed. We also have to consider that such variation might be related to intraspecific differences in the relative strength of resistance and tolerance mechanisms.  相似文献

A correspondence analysis of shell measurements taken from 521 widely dispersed specimens of the African aquatic pulmonate snail Biomphalaria pfeifferi suggests the existence of eight morphological groups. These groups appear to relate to either ecophysiological factors or to factors associated with the stability of the freshwater system rather than to aspects of geographic distribution and genetic isolation.  相似文献

The life history of Oxychilus (Drouetia) brincki (Riedel, 1964), an endemic species from Santa Maria island (Azores), is addressed here for the first time. One population was analyzed for 1 year, to study the reproductive cycle and to assess the validity of three morphometric parameters as maturation diagnostic characters. The positive correlation between morphometric parameters (maximum diameter and number of whorls) can be useful to define the reproductive maturation status particularly during the active reproductive season. Oxychilus brincki is reproductively active between May and October/November; the residual values of mature oocytes between February and April allow reproduction to occur throughout the year. Our observations on gonadal maturation show that there is a functional protandric tendency and that photoperiod probably triggers the maturation process, whereas temperature acts mainly as a regulatory factor. Contrary to other terrestrial pulmonate snails that have a well demarcated reproductive cycle, Azorean species are gametogenically active throughout almost all the year.  相似文献

Abstract

Pallial systems are described for 10 athoracophorid species: Athoracophorus bitentaculatus, Pseudaneitea dendyi, P. gigantea, P. papillata, P. pallida, P. aspera, P. schauinslandi, P. multistriata, and Palliopodex verrucosus from the New Zealand and sub antarctic area; and Triboniophorus graeffei from Australia. In the New Zealand and subantarctic species the kidney is invariably bilobed, the ureter is extensively folded and connected to the intestine by an elongate tubule running initially through the lung, and the pneumostome, anus, and excretory pores are widely sepamted. Triboniophorus graeffei has the pneumostome, anus, and excretory pore closely associated, a compact kidney, and a more simply folded ureter. The New Zealand and subantarctic representatives are considered to be more advanced. Reasons for the development of the features they display are discussed, as is the function and evolution of the entire pallial system. An account of the variation in the pallial complex of Athoracophorus bitentaculatus is included.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to unravel the historical biogeography of the speciose land snail genus Chondrina. To this end phylogenetic hypotheses were tested using mitochondrial DNA sequence data.Mitochondrial DNA sequences of the Cytochrome Oxidase subunit I region were obtained for 89 individuals, representing just over 70% of the extant Chondrina species. The extent of molecular genetic diversity and phylogeographical patterns were investigated by using neighbour joining, parsimony and bayesian methods for phylogeny reconstructions. The resulting data were used to infer historical biogeographical patterns for the genus Chondrina.The three phylogenetic methods yielded congruent topologies for the phylogeny reconstruction. Six clades were identified, each of which with at least one taxon that is known from the Iberian peninsula. The most parsimonious scenario indicates at least three waves of dispersal out of the Iberian peninsula into the North and East of Europe and Northern Africa.The phylogenetic relationships combined with the distributional patterns of the various species, indicate that only vicariance events cannot explain the actual situation. Apparently, separate waves of dispersal and subsequent speciation occurred, each time starting from the southwestern part of the present generic range. Until recently, this was obscured by repetitive cases of parallel or convergent evolution in shell characters, as became evident with the use of molecular methods.  相似文献
