There are pronounced differences in kinetic and thermodynamic stability between human and horse hemoglobins. Since the amino acid sequences of the α, β dimers of horse and human hemoglobins differ in 61 locations, it is difficult to account for them in terms of specific direct or indirect effects of the sequence differences. Rhesus hemoglobin differs from human in only 12 locations and its stability resembles that of human more closely than does horse, although pronounced differences remain. The stabilities of rhesus ferrihemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin (Hb+ and Hb °) are intermediate between those of the corresponding high-spin forms of horse and human hemoglobin; but there are only small or negligible differences between the low-spin forms (carbonylhemoglobin and oxyhemoglobin) of the two species. The equilibrium isotherm between native and acid unfolded forms of rhesus Hb+ resembles that of horse more than that of human, but it is slightly more stable and slightly less cooperative. The effects of octanol on the rates of unfolding of rhesus ferrihemoglobin are only slightly smaller than with human. There is no effect of octanol on the unfolding rate of any of the CO hemoglobins. Unlike the equilibria of horse and human, octanol is also without effect on the unfolding equilibrium of rhesus ferrihemoglobin, and thus qualifies as a true catalyst of the initial stage of the acid unfolding reaction of the monkey ferriprotein. Differences in stability are tentatively attributed to a limited number of the 12 differences between the two proteins.  相似文献

This study focuses on ecological processes such as competition or predation from an evolutionary perspective. First, we attempt to test the idea that species with similar feeding requirements tend to coexist by separating morphologically or behaviourally. Then, the Barton–David test was applied to several carnivore communities (felids and canids) separated in time. Although the preservation bias of the fossil record renders our conclusions tentative, the general equal size–ratio pattern in most of the guilds examined indicates that inter-specific competition for prey species seems to be a good candidate to explain the evolution of guild composition and morphological traits throughout the Pleistocene for the two groups considered, felids and canids.  相似文献

This study answers the question: Are the variable and invariable codons of cytochrome c largely the same in all species? A method is presented for estimating the number of invariable (as opposed to unvaried) codons common to two taxa. The two taxa in this study were comprised of four fungi and four metazoans. Given the number of mutations fixed in each taxon, one calculates the number of codons that would be expected to have fixed mutations in both taxa, in one taxon only, in the other taxon only, and in neither taxon. This expectation depends upon the number of invariable codons that are assumed to be common to both taxa. In the present example, the assumption of 41 invariable codons in common leads to estimates that deviate by less than 2% from the values actually observed. This leads to the conclusion that there are 46 positions that are variable in one taxon but invariable in the other, thereby demonstrating that the invariable codons are not largely the same between the fungi and the metazoans.  相似文献

Routine analysis of urinary metabolites of estrogen and progesterone provided substantial information about the estrous cycle of bears. However, these data alone were not adequate to determine the precise timing of ovulation needed to maximize AI success rates, or to distinguish between pregnancy and pseudopregnancy. Therefore, there is a critical need to develop technologies that will enhance understanding of the reproductive mechanisms of ursids. Using the domestic dog as a model, three techniques were investigated for potential application to the propagation of captive endangered bears. In a modification of standard staining of bitch vaginal cells, trichrome staining of giant panda cells revealed two consistent chromic shifts 9 and 2 days prior to the periovulatory decrease in urinary estrone sulfate, enhancing the ability to predict ovarian events preceding ovulation. To further define the relationship between the decrease in estrogen and ovulation, the utility of a rapid immunochromatographic LH assay was investigated for giant pandas using a commercial LH kit canine serum. Serum collected during estrus exhibited positive test results, indicating the cross-reactivity of giant panda LH with canine LH antibodies, and preliminary data supported further development of the LH kit for the detection of LH in bear urine. Due to the limitations of hormone analysis for distinguishing pregnancy from pseudopregnancy in canids and ursids, forward-looking infrared thermography was evaluated as a method to visualize proliferating placental tissue, fetuses, or both. While further investigation is needed to confirm the utility of thermal imaging for pregnancy diagnosis in the domestic bitch, pregnancy and pseudopregnancy were successfully detected in two giant pandas.  相似文献

We explored the impact of body condition on vertical distributionof the carnivore copepod Pareuchaeta norvegica. Individualssampled in the upper part of the water column had lower dryweight and slightly shorter prosome than individuals sampleddeeper. Non-ovigerous females occurred higher in the water columnthan ovigerous females. Our results suggest that ovigerous femalesand individuals with large energy reserves to a large extentprioritize predator avoidance in deep water versus feeding inthe upper part of the water column compared to non-ovigerousfemales and individuals with low energy reserves. Adult femalescollected closest to the surface were less pigmented than thosefound deeper. This, however, proved to be a quickly adjustabletrait depending on prevailing light conditions.  相似文献

Factors influencing the social acceptability of large carnivore behaviours   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:1  
A survey on attitudes toward large carnivores was conducted in a representative sample of the Norwegian population (n = 3134). People were asked about the acceptability of carnivores living in remote wilderness, close to where people live, killing livestock, killing pets, or threatening humans. Large differences in acceptability appeared across the five situations. Wolves and bears were less acceptable than lynx and wolverines when observed close to where people live. Negative associations were found between acceptability and lack of personal control, economic loss, and respondents' age. Acceptability was higher among males than among females, and higher among urban than among rural residents. The results showed that general measures of attitudes alone toward large carnivores were of limited value in wildlife management. The situational and social specificity of these attitudes should be given more attention.  相似文献

Phylogenetic reconstruction of carnivore social organizations   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
It is generally assumed that carnivore social organizations evolved directionally from a solitary ancestor into progressively more advanced forms of group living. Although alternative explanations exist, this evolutionary hypothesis has never been tested. Here, I used literature data and maximum likelihood reconstruction on a complete carnivore phylogeny to test this hypothesis against two others: one assuming directional evolution from a non-solitary ancestor, and one assuming parallel evolutions from a socially flexible ancestor, that is, an ancestor with abilities to live in a variety of social organizations. The phylogenetic reconstructions did not support any of the three hypotheses of social evolution at the root of Carnivora. At the family level, however, there was support for a non-solitary and socially flexible ancestor to Canidae, a socially flexible or solitary ancestor to Mustelidae, a solitary or socially flexible ancestor to Mephitidae, a solitary or group living ancestor to Phocidae, a group living ancestor to Otariidae and a solitary ancestor to Ursidae, Felidae, Herpestidae and Viverridae. There was equivocal support for the ancestral state of Procyonidae and Hyaenidae. It is unclear whether the common occurrence of a solitary ancestry at the family level was caused by a solitary ancestor at the root of Carnivora or by multiple transitions into a solitary state. The failure to support a solitary ancestor to Carnivora calls for caution when using this hypothesis in an evolutionary framework, and I suggest continued investigations of the pathways of the evolution of carnivore social organizations.  相似文献
