At the Chimpanzee and Human Communication Institute, caregivers provide the 5 chimpanzees who reside there with many different forms of social, food, habitat, and object enrichment. In this study, we examined the chimpanzees' use of both semipermanent and temporary objects. Semipermanent objects included cargo nets, climbing structures, a treat mound, and other objects that were present at the chimpanzees' enclosure throughout the duration of this study. Each day, 50 temporary objects were placed in the chimpanzees' outdoor enclosure or indoor exercise rooms. Frequency of use was examined in 2 conditions: rotated and same. In the rotated condition, temporary objects were replaced with different temporary objects after 3 hr. In the same condition, temporary objects were presented for the entire day. Focal and scan sampling were used to record the chimpanzees' use of enrichment objects. Observers collected focal sample data to record the chimpanzees' initial reaction to objects when entering the indoor exercise rooms, outdoor enclosures, or both at 9:00 a.m. and 1.00 p.m. A total of 35 hr of focal data and 156 hr of scan data were collected over an 8-week period. Temporary object rotation in- creased the overall frequency of temporary object use both in the initial 15 min of focal sample data and during the following 6 hr of scan sample data for 4 of the chimpanzees. All of these chimpanzees used both semipermanent and temporary objects throughout the day. Each chimpanzee's pattern of use was unique. The results of this study emphasize the importance of temporary object rotation and presentation of both temporary and semipermanent objects to captive chimpanzee environments.  相似文献

Details are presented relating to chimpanzees' choices between two sympatric species of termites,Macrotermes lillijeborgi andM. vitrialatus, as food in the Campo Animal Reserve, southwest Cameroon, West Africa. An attempt was made to determine the various factors that affected such choices. The two species of termites seemed to have almost the same value in terms of ecological factors. However, chimpanzees fed almost exclusivelyonM. lillijeborgi, using digging sticks and fisching probes, during the study period which extended from the end of August to the middle of January, with their feeding activity showing peak at the beginning of the rainy season. By contrast,M. vitrialatus was rarely eaten in spite of the ease with which such prey could be obtained, namely, by desctruction of termite mounds by hand, without the need for tools. The reason that the chimpanzees discriminated between the two species of termite cannot be explained in terms of ecological factors such as size of prey, seasonal differences in termite activity, etc. Sticks used as tools were fairly uniform in size and character, mainly because of physical constraints related to the structure of termite mounds, and the brush-like ends of sticks seemed to be incidentaly byproducts of the chimpanzee's choice of plant species. Ecological factors could provide chimpanzees with a basis for the use of some kind of tool and help them modify it, while other factors, for example, something akin to leisure or the chimpanzee's interest in use of a tool, could provide an opportunity for inventing some tool-using behavior or for maintaining such behavior. These different factors, not being exclusive of one another, might affect the invention and maintenance of tool using-behavior at different phases. It is possible that chimpanzee's choice of prey may not always be the most efficient or appropriate in a given ecological situation.  相似文献

Planning has long been considered a uniquely human capacity. Lately, however, it has been shown that apes and a corvid species act now to derive a material future benefit. Since primates are highly social animals and their sociality is considered a strong selective force that resulted in complex cognitive capacities, planning is also expected in social situations. Unfortunately, prompting from social partners cannot be excluded in a social setting. Therefore, we controlled for this factor by testing the capacity to plan in chimpanzees using an exchange paradigm, that involves both a material and a social component, and a tool-use paradigm, similar to the one used on two other ape species. All chimpanzees failed to plan in the exchange task, but three individuals showed planning behavior in the tool-use task. Our methods controlled for the fact that chimpanzees were not prompted by the visibility of the reward at the moment of planning and also could not repeat a previously acquired routine. The best interpretation for our results is that chimpanzees can plan. However, planning was limited to the situation where the action to attain the future benefit only depended on a chimpanzee's own behavior.  相似文献

When a chimpanzee is presented with a mirror it initially responds with social behavior directed toward the reflection. After several hours of exposure to the mirror the social behavior decreases and the mirror is used to guide self-directed responses to previously unobservable parts of the body such as the face. When a distinctively colored mark is unobtrousively applied to the chimpanzee's face and the chimpanzee touches the mark while observing itself in the mirror, this behavior is said to indicate self-recognition. Such self-recognition has been considered to be a robust phenomenon in chimpanzees, with self-directed and mark-directed behaviors both appearing in all socially-housed adult chimpanzees tested. In our study 11 chimpanzees were given mirror exposure and tested with the mark test. Only one of the 11 chimpanzees touched the mark during test, although several showed self-directed behavior using the mirror to guide their movements. Such experimental factors as mirror size, position, or temporal spacing of the mirror exposure, and such subject variables as age, sex, previous social experience, and subspecies were insufficient to explain the difference between the present and previous findings. We suggest that there are individual differences in mirror recognition behavior in chimpanzees, and that further consideration of the factors contributing to this phenomenon, including the development of additional tests for self-recognition, is needed.  相似文献

Handclasp grooming is a unique social custom, known to occur regularly among some, but not all populations of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes). As with other cultural behaviors, it is assumed that this distinctive grooming posture is learned socially by one individual from another. However, statistical comparisons among factors thought to influence how a behavior spreads within a group have never, to our knowledge, been conducted. In the present study, the origination and spread of handclasp grooming in a group of captive chimpanzees was followed throughout more than 1,500 h of observation over a period of 12 years. We report on the frequency, bout duration, and number and demography of performers throughout the study period, and compare these findings to those reported for wild populations. We predicted that dyads with strong affiliative ties, measured by time spent in proximity to and grooming one another, were likely to develop a handclasp grooming partnership during the study period. A quadratic assignment procedure was used to compare correlations among observed frequencies of grooming and proximity with handclasp grooming in all possible dyads within the group. As predicted, the formation of new handclasp grooming dyads was positively correlated with the rate of overall grooming and proximity within a dyad. In addition, in nearly all dyads formed, at least one individual had been previously observed to handclasp groom. We concluded that affiliation and individual experience determines the transmission of handclasp grooming among captive chimpanzees.  相似文献

Cantanhez National Park in southern Guinea-Bissau is a mosaic of forest, mangrove, savanna, and agricultural fields, with a high prevalence of oil-palm trees (Elaeis guineensis). It hosts many different animal species, including the chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes verus). Very little is known about the ecology of chimpanzees inhabiting this area. The main aims of this study were to evaluate chimpanzee nesting behavior, define trends of habitat use, and estimate chimpanzee density in four separate forests by applying the marked nest counts methodology. From the 287 new nests counted, 92% were built in oil-palm trees with a significantly higher frequency of nests in the forest edge than in forest cores. Differences in nest detection rates were observed in the four monitored forests, with two forests being more important for chimpanzee's nesting demands. The number of nests documented in the forests seemed to be correlated with the frequency of other signs of chimpanzee activity. Although chimpanzees selected nests on the forest edge, they were most frequently observed in forest core areas. Constraints associated with estimating chimpanzee density through oil-palm nest counting are discussed.  相似文献

From May, 1964, to September, 1965, the author made ecological and sociological studies of wild chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) in Western Tanzania, East Africa. The vegetation of this area belongs to theBrachystegia andIsoberlinia savanna woodland. During the dry season, chimpanzees go out into the open forest and chiefly eat the hard seeds ofJulbernardia, Brachystegia, Isoberlinia, Pterocarpus, etc.The continuity of the group of chimpanzees is not stable but temporary, as has been reported byGoodall, etc. The author termed such a temporary group nomadic group. A big nomadic group, such as that consisting of 43 individuals at Filabanga, seems to be one unit of a chimpanzee's society.The nomadic range of the chimpanzees in the savanna woodland covers about 100 km2 (201 km2 in the Kasakati area). This is greater than that of the chimpanzees living in the forest, and such a large range has not been previously known among other non-human primates.This study was made possible by the Overseas Scientific Research Fund of the Ministry of Education.  相似文献

A population of wild chimpanzees in the Budongo Forest, Uganda, was studied between September, 1966, and March, 1967, by means of habituation and identification of each individual. This article deals with the grouping patterns, social units, and social organization of the chimpanzees in their natural habitat. Although parties of chimpanzees form groups of many patterns according to each particular situation and have no permanent membership, many chimpanzees live within a certain restricted area and gather to form parties consisting, in the main, of chimpanzees acquainted with each other. More than 50 individuals combined by social bonds in a loose regional population which is separated from other populations without recourse to geographical or physical barriers, though it maintains friendly contact with neighboring chimpanzee residents and with strangers. No particular individual group leader can be found, but any adult, especially a male, may act as a nucleus of each party.This study was carried out as a part of the Kyoto University Africa Primatological Expedition; the field work was financed mainly by a Grant for Scientific Research, Ministry of Education, and in part by the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research and by the economic world of Japan.  相似文献

This is the first study to investigate the short-term effects of high population density on captive chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes). Subjects of the study were 45 chimpanzees living in five different groups at the Yerkes Regional Primate Research Center. The groups were observed under two conditions: 1) when they had access to both the indoor and outdoor sections of their enclosures; 2) during cold days when they were locked into the indoor runs, which reduced the available space by more than half. Under the high-density condition, allogrooming and submissive greetings decreased, but juvenile play increased. Remarkably, the rate of various forms of agonistic behavior, such as aggression, bluff charge, bluff display, and hooting, occurred less frequently under the high-density condition. This general decrease in adult social activity, including agonistic behavior, can be interpreted as an inhibition strategy to reduce opportunities for conflict when interindividual distances are reduced. This strategy is probably effective only in the short run, however. Behavioral indicators of anxiety, such as rough scratching and yawning, showed elevated rates, suggesting increased social tension under the high-density condition. Am. J. It has been said that there is no stable and permanent social unit in a society of chimpanzees. From observations at Filabanga in Western Tanzania and some other observed cases, we concluded that a large-sized group consisting of 30–50 animals is a social unit common to chimpanzees, and pointed out that chimpanzees freely repeat grouping and dispersion within a large-sized group, and such changeability in grouping is the most characteristic nature of chimpanzee society. The size, composition, and various other characteristics of the large-sized group are discussed and compared with the group of Japanese monkey and gorilla. A large-sized group of chimpanzees is not a group basically consisting of a one-male group like a group of gorilla, but usually contains more than five adult males and more than ten adult females as its members, and when they gather to form a larger group, young adult males rarely join it. In a largesized group there is no stable social unit lower than the group itself. It may be considered that two or three large-sized groups concentrate in an area and form a community, but this problem and inter-large-sized group relations are important subjects to be solved in the future. We related these various characteristics of the social organization of chimpanzees to the developed behavior displayed by the chimpanzees, especially those living in the savanna woodland, and discussed one important stage in the evolution of society in non-human primates.The investigation has been supported by the Scientific Research Fund of the Ministry of Education since 1961.  相似文献

Meeting the psychological needs of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) can be a challenge given their aggressiveness on the one hand and the complexity of their social lives on the other. It is unclear how to balance the need to provide opportunities for species-appropriate behavior against potential risks of injury chimpanzees may inflict on each other. This study evaluates the suggestion that simpler social environments protect chimpanzees from wounding. Over a two-year period all visible injuries to 46 adult males, 64 adult females, and 25 immature chimpanzees were recorded at the Yerkes Regional Primate Research Center. Approximately half of the subjects were mother-reared, and the rest were nursery-reared. Housing included compounds containing about 20 chimpanzees, interconnected indoor-outdoor runs for groups of up to 12 individuals, and smaller indoor-outdoor runs for pairs and trios. Annual wounding rates were calculated for serious wounds (extensive injuries and all those requiring veterinary intervention) as well as for minor wounds. Compound-housed chimpanzees incurred the highest level of minor wounding, but serious wounding levels were not affected by housing condition. Even with a period of dominance instability and elevated levels of wounding in one compound, compound chimpanzees were not injured more than those in smaller social groups over the long term. Nursery-reared females in moderate-sized groups were wounded more than mother-reared females. Also, nursery-reared males and females were wounded less often when paired with mother-reared companions. Overall, this study indicates that maintaining chimpanzees in pairs and trios would not be an effective means for reducing injuries. The management of wounding in chimpanzee colonies is influenced more by the sex and rearing composition of a colony.  相似文献

Background

The evolution of altruism has been explained mainly from ultimate perspectives. However, it remains to be investigated from a proximate point of view how and in which situations such social propensity is achieved. We investigated chimpanzees'' targeted helping in a tool transfer paradigm, and discuss the similarities and differences in altruism between humans and chimpanzees. Previously it has been suggested that chimpanzees help human experimenters by retrieving an object which the experimenter is trying to reach. In the present study, we investigated the importance of communicative interactions between chimpanzees themselves and the influence of conspecific partner''s request on chimpanzees'' targeted helping.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We presented two tool-use situations (a stick-use situation and a straw-use situation) in two adjacent booths, and supplied non-corresponding tools to paired chimpanzees in the two booths. For example, a chimpanzee in the stick-use situation was supplied with a straw, and the partner in the straw-use situation possessed a stick. Spontaneous tool transfer was observed between paired chimpanzees. The tool transfer events occurred predominantly following recipients'' request. Even without any hope of reciprocation from the partner, the chimpanzees continued to help the partner as long as the partner required help.

Conclusions/Significance

These results provide further evidence for altruistic helping in chimpanzees in the absence of direct personal gain or even immediate reciprocation. Our findings additionally highlight the importance of request as a proximate mechanism motivating prosocial behavior in chimpanzees whether between kin or non-kin individuals and the possible confounding effect of dominance on the symmetry of such interactions. Finally, in contrast to humans, our study suggests that chimpanzees rarely perform acts of voluntary altruism. Voluntary altruism in chimpanzees is not necessarily prompted by simple observation of another''s struggle to attain a goal and therefore an accurate understanding of others'' desires in the absence of communicative signals.  相似文献

1967至1997的30年间,生活在非洲热带地区自然栖息地的野生黑猩猩数量由60万降至不足20万,至今这个数字仍在减少,因此引起了全球的关注并急需要开展迁地保护。笼养黑猩猩与野外种群一样营群居生活,为了有效进行野生黑猩猩的迁地保护,将野外捕获的野生黑猩猩个体成功引入已在动物园的黑猩猩群体中十分必要。2004年10月至2005年3月,乌干达野生动物研究中心首先开展了这一实验。同时为更好地了解外来黑猩猩融入笼养群体的过程,2006年9月至2007年1月间收集其活动数据。选取5只黑猩猩个体并记录它们的食性、行为、体重变化及身体健康状况。除直接观察和记录外,与兽医和研究中心管理人员进行合作,以获取较多笼养个体的信息。我们发现,野生个体比笼养个体多病,因此影响了它们的取食、社会行为及活动水平。尽管笼养黑猩猩有人照料,但仍具备野生个体的行为,所以,理解外来黑猩猩融入笼养群体的过程对于黑猩猩的迁地保护和就地保护是非常重要的。  相似文献

Although the pygmy chimpanzee is not smaller than a chimpanzee, it has long intrigued anthropologists with its more gracile build and greater arboreality. The social organization of the pygmy chimpanzee is unique among primates in showing female-bonding among nonrelatives, little male bonding despite male residence, and relative inability of males to outrank females. The crucial ecological basis for this difference from the male-bonded system of chimpanzees is that pygmy chimpanzees do not go through an extended season of low food availability during which party sizes fall to low levels.  相似文献

Wild and captive female bonobos exhibit a form of noncopulatory sexual behavior—genito-genital (GG) rubbing—in which 2 individuals rub their genital regions together. GG-rubbing in bonobos occurs in several contexts and may serve several functions, including tension reduction and reconciliation. It has not been reported for chimpanzees. In a study of captive, adolescent chimpanzees at the New Iberia Research Center, I observed that females rubbed genital regions at rates equivalent to those of bonobos, though the form of the behavior differed in significant ways from classic bonobo GG-rubbing. I describe the pattern of GG-rubbing in the chimpanzees and provide preliminary tests of 5 hypotheses for why the behavior occurs. All 4 females in the study group participated in GG-rubbing, though the frequency with which they initiated and participated varied. Females that GG-rubbed the most also groomed each other the most, supporting the hypothesis that GG-rubbing reinforces or at least reflects social bonds. The data do not support the hypothesis that females GG-rub to reconcile conflicts, to reduce tension during feeding, to signal social status, or to attract mates.  相似文献

The behavior of wild chimpanzees at Bossou, Guinea, was studied from November 1976 to May 1977 recognizing each chimpanzee without artificial feeding. During the study period some tool-using and tool-making behavior was observed, as follows: (1) Although water drinking using a “leaf-sponge” was not seen, that using a “leaf-spoon” was observed for taking water from the hollow of a tree. (2) “Termite fishing” was not seen in this group although there were many termite hills in the moving range of the chimpanzees. They dug termites from the hollow of a tree by pounding with a small stick. Similar use of a stick was made for digging up the resin from a tree. (3) “Aimed throwing” was frequently observed in adult males for attacking an observer, and in adolescents and juveniles as mischief against an observer or for their own play. (4) “Nut cracking” with a pair of stones was seen for removing the ovule from palm-seeds. Particular stones were repeatedly used by many chimpanzees for a long period. (5) “Branch hauling” represented difficult work. Patient and inventive manufacture of proper sticks was necessary for capturing branches which they were unable to reach normally. Local variations in the tool-using patterns and manufacturing ability of chimpanzees are discussed.  相似文献

Association partners of young chimpanzees at the Mahale Mountains National Park were analyzed. Juvenile and adolescent chimpanzees associated frequently with their mothers, although mother-offspring association decreased as the offspring grew up. Males tended to leave their mothers and associate with adult males, while females remained frequently associating with their mothers in early adolescence. In late adolescence and young adulthood, males usually associated with adult males and cycling adult females. Females may transfer into neighboring unit-groups in this stage. Although an immigrant female tended to be alone when her estrous cycle stopped, she associated with many individuals, in particular with adult males, when she resumed cycling. Some orphans were observed to associate frequently with particular adults. The findings were discussed in relation to the unique characteristics of chimpanzee social system.  相似文献

The chimpanzee's use of American Sign Language (ASL) to communicate with humans and with each other has been empirically demonstrated in several reports, but this is the first research to experimentally examine their use of sign language in a nonsocial fashion: private signing. This experiment examined the private signing behavior of five signing chimpanzees, using a remote videotaping technique with no human present. It was found that all five chimpanzees signed to themselves for a total of 368 instances. These instances of private signing were classified into nine different functional categories as has been done in the analysis of private speech and signing in hearing and deaf human children. Similar to humans, a few of the categories accounted for the majority of the instances of private signing. These findings empirically demonstrate a behavior similar to private speech and signing in humans.  相似文献

Field observations were carried out on chimpanzees, pygmy chimpanzees and eastern gorillas. Since the communicative behaviors which appear in group ranging are closely related to the grouping of the animals and to the social structure, the communicative behaviors of group ranging were compared in the above three species in order to elucidate the common and different characters of their three much diversified social structures. The following conclusions were drawn: (1) the common ancestor ofGorilla andPan had the territorial call “hoot” and behavior of display, and males were antagonistic between each other in the society; (2) the common ancestral species did not have any special long distance cohesive calling: the society was a small compact one, moving on the ground; and (3) the social structure of the pygmy chimpanzee is very different from the common ancestral social structure when compared with those of the gorilla and chimpanzee, in that the pygmy chimpanzee has lost the behaviors of strong antagonistic character between adult males.  相似文献

The author studied wild pygmy chimpanzees (Pan paniscus) for about eight months on two separate expeditions between 1975 and 1977, in the study area located at Wamba, Zone de Djolu, in the Republic of Zaire. Most of this paper is based on data obtained through observing the pygmy chimpanzees in their natural surroundings. However, some of them were provisioned and frequently visited the feeding area. Some portion of the data on groupings and food sharing were gathered there. Pygmy chimpanzees groupings, although similar to the common chimpanzee groupings, have larger temporary associations that are almost exclusively bisexual. At least in some greeting contexts, they exhibit patterns of behavior distinctly different from the common chimpanzee. A preliminary investigation of their social interactions revealed strong bonds between males and females, and high female sociability, in contrast to the strong male bonds and female unsociability seen among common chimpanzees.  相似文献
