Changes in the carotenoid content in gonads of two sea urchins species were investigated during maturation. The content of echinenones and carotenes, the two major carotenoid fractions in gonads, is highest for Strongylocentrotus intermedius at the spawning gametogenic stage of gonad maturation for both sexes. For S. nudus, the content of these pigments is highest at stages of active gametogenesis and spawning for males and at the growth stage for females. A comparison of the carotenoid content dynamics during maturation of gonads for males, females and animals at the resting (sexual inactivity) stage was also carried out.  相似文献

The annual and lunar reproductive cycle of the widely distributed edible sea urchin Tripneustes gratilla (L) was examined through measurements of gonad index, histological examination of gametogenesis, and induction of spawning with KCl injections. The population density and morphological characteristics of urchins at Diani, Kanamai, and Vipingo reef lagoons were also studied as well as the effects of seawater temperature and light on reproduction. Gonad growth started early during the northeast monsoon and reached a peak in June at the beginning of the southeast monsoon followed by a sharp decrease in gonad size of 50% in July and August towards the end of the southeast monsoons. Histological examination of gonads, revealed many different stages of gametogenesis with gametes present throughout the year, indicating continuous reproduction. There was a significant relationship between gonad index and lunar day with spawning occurring between lunar day 7 and 21, but spawning was not in perfect synchrony in the population. The population density of urchins at each reef is variable from year to year and was highest on average at Vipingo. Urchins at Kanamai had the lowest gonad indices, the largest jaws and smallest individuals an indication of food limitation. The gonads (roe) of T. gratilla at all three sites, were perpetually ‘runny’ an attribute that is not suitable for urchin fisheries. Studies to develop techniques to improve roe quality are recommended.  相似文献

Under natural conditions in the course of gametogenesis, the asynchronism in oocyte development in fish ovaries is observed on early stages of gonad maturation and mostly in species with batch spawning. When investigating gametogenesis in sterlet under conditions of a warm-water farm (Konakovsky sturgeon farm), rather uniform development of gametes is noted; asynchronism occurs in separate individuals and also in fishes grown under conditions of recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) at a constant high water temperature.  相似文献

An intense and generalized sporozoan infection was detected in every population of the queen conch, Strombus gigas through the Caribbean. In this contribution we establish the relationship between occurrences of an Apicomplexa: Emeriidae-like organism and reproductive activity at San Andres archipelago, Colombia. Occurrence of the parasites was estimated counting the feeding stage Merozoites and cysts Sporozoites at 40× magnification. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling analysis (NMDS) was made to correlate the parasites stages abundance with frequency of the reproductive stages. Gametogenesis and spawning were always low coinciding with high numbers of Merozoites, a positive correlation was established between parasite abundance with reabsorption and undifferentiated stages, and negative correlation was observed between parasite abundance with maturity and spawning stages. The nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) shows that gametogenesis, maturity and spawning increase as the number of parasites decrease, factor that could be threatening reproduction of S. gigas through the Caribbean.  相似文献

The need to propose recommendations for the management of over 80 species of bivalves and gastropod mollusks exploited commercially in Mexico, led to look for trends on the population and reproductive biology in relation to prevailing environmental conditions of the habitats where they are exploited. The reproductive cycle, growth parameters for the von Bertalanffy equation, mortality and recruitment of 18 populations of 14 species from 13 localities are compared and related to ambient temperature, precipitation, evaporation, geomorphology, tides, and water salinity and temperature. Localities were classified as influenced by landmasses or with marine influence, with a desert or tropical humid climate. With restricted or continuous communication to oceanic waters and with or without freshwater runoff. The reproductive cycles were classified in four groups in relation to intensity and duration of the spawning season: 1) limited to one annual spawning, 2) two or more defined spawning periods, 3) two or more extended spawning periods, and 4) continuous low intensity spawning. And three groups in relation to gonad recovery, and duration and intensity of gametogenesis: 1) post spawn and rest stages absent or restricted, 2) fast gametogenesis and a clear mature stage. and 3) extended gametogenesis and limited maturity stages. The population parameters were classified in relation to age structure and number of cohorts, intensity and duration of recruitment, and growth rates as expressed by infinity and K. In relation to their life cycle four types were found: 1) population represented by only one cohort, at least during part of the year, 2) with two or more cohorts at any time, 3) longevity under five years, and 4) longevity over live years. In relation to recruitment: 1) one recruitment period restricted to a short season, 2) two or more recruitment periods, 3) constant recruitment with one or more peaks, and 4) constant recruitment without periods of dominance.  相似文献

Insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) has been shown to be involved in pubertal activation of gonadotropin (GTH) secretion. The aim of this study was to determine if IGF-I directly stimulates synthesis and release of GTH at an early stage of gametogenesis. The effects of IGF-I on expression of genes encoding glycoprotein alpha (GPalpha), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) beta, and luteinizing hormone (LH) beta subunits and release of FSH and LH were examined using primary pituitary cells of masu salmon at three reproductive stages: early gametogenesis, maturing stage, and spawning. IGF-I alone or IGF-I + salmon GnRH (sGnRH) were added to the primary pituitary cell cultures. Amounts of GPalpha, FSHbeta, and LHbeta mRNAs were determined by real-time PCR. Plasma and medium levels of FSH and LH were determined by RIA. In males, IGF-I increased the amounts of all three subunit mRNAs early in gametogenesis in a dose-dependent manner, but not in the later stages. In females, IGF-I stimulated release of FSH and LH early in gametogenesis, whereas no stimulatory effects on the subunit mRNA levels were observed at any stage. IGF-I + sGnRH stimulated release of FSH and LH at all stages in both sexes, but had different effects on the subunit mRNA levels depending on subunit and stage. The present results suggest that IGF-I itself directly stimulates synthesis and release of GTH early in gametogenesis in masu salmon, possibly acting as a metabolic signal that triggers the onset of puberty.  相似文献

The oocytes of the abyssal Teleost, Hoplostethus mediterraneus were studied. Four stages of growth were observed and the oocytes of all the stages were surrounded by follicular cells and had several nucleoli in the nucleus. In the oocytes of the II degrees stage, vacuoles without contents, in oocytes of the III degrees stage several vacuoles with a basophilic contents and small yolk globules were identified. General and basic proteins, ribonucleoproteins, acid proteoglycans with -COOH groups were recognized in the cytoplasm, in the nucleoli of oocytes in the II degrees stage and in the vacuolar contents of oocytes in the III degrees stage. In the follicular cells, in the pellucid zone, in the yolk globules, from their beginning, glycoproteins were present. Positivity, for all lectins used, was revealed in the follicular cells and in the four stages of oocytes growth. alpha-D-glucose and alpha-D-mannose binding sites were in the pellucid zone and in the initial yolk globules. In the lather galactose and beta-N-acetyl glucosamine were present too. nNOS and VIP immunopositivity revealed at the periphery of the cytoplasm and at network of nerve fibres between oocytes, suggests NO is involved in a mechanism of regulation of the gametogenesis and of the spawning.  相似文献

Abstract. The germinal epithelium of sea urchin gonads contains two interdependent populations of cells: somatic cells called nutritive phagocytes (NPs) and germ cells—ovarian and testicular gonial cells and their derivatives, gametocytes and gametes. Annually, NPs vary their structure and function to produce a changing microenvironment for germ cells during gametogenesis and after spawning. Here, we describe seasonal changes in the NPs as they interact with germ cells during successive gametogenic stages in both sexes of the green sea urchin, Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis. Monthly samples were collected from the Gulf of Maine at a depth of 10 m and analyzed with light microscopy and stereology. Shorter day length and falling seawater temperatures were correlated with nutrient mobilization from NPs, initiation of gonial cell mitosis, and subsequent gametogenesis. During gametogenesis, NPs in both sexes were depleted of nutrients and eventually phagocytize residual ova or spermatozoa. Observations from this study are important for understanding both the cellular aspects of the reproductive biology of sea urchins and those environmental factors that affect the onset and progress of gametogenesis.  相似文献

This study was conducted at a high-latitude location (32°N; Kochi, Japan), where annual seawater temperatures show large fluctuations due to the meandering of the Kuroshio Current, providing a unique opportunity to examine the influence of temperature on coral reproduction. Annual spawning of individual colonies of four reef coral species-two Acropora species (Acropora hyacinthus and A. japonica) and two faviid species (Favites pentagona and Platygyra contorta)-was monitored in situ for 4 years in 2006-2009. The spawning of the four species always occurred around the last quarter moon in the local summer, July or August, irrespective of high annual variations in seawater temperatures (from 23.7 to 29.5 °C) and weather during the spawning period. However, the exact timing of spawning during the spawning period varied among the years and was correlated with the cumulative seawater temperature during the late period of gametogenesis (0-3 months before spawning). When seawater temperatures were higher, spawning occurred in the earlier spawning month (July) and vice versa, except in A. hyacinthus, which always spawned in July. In the case of the two Acropora species, higher (lower) temperatures led to spawning earlier (later) in the lunar cycle. Seawater temperature may have an influence on gametogenesis, causing the shift in spawning timing.  相似文献

When female winter flounder ( Pleuronectes americanus ) were subjected to periods of satiation feeding alternating with starvation it was found that the first part of their normal six-month feeding period could be associated with subsequent gametogenesis, whereas feeding in the later part of the normal feeding period was not necessary. Conversely if females were not fed during the first part of the normal feeding season they were likely to become non-reproductive, although high condition fish or a non-spawner could become gametogenic in spite of starvation at this time. Feeding restricted to the later part of the normal feeding season was therefore not generally associated with successful gametogenesis for the following year's spawn. When the first part of the feeding period was further subdivided with satiation feeding limited to one or more months within it, most fish became non-reproductive. The exceptions which became reproductive were females which had high post-spawn condition maintained in the month following the immediate spawning period for the individual fish. A nutritionally sensitive period for early gametogenesis in female winter flounder therefore appears to occur in the early part of the normal feeding season, close to the normal spawning period. The experimentally produced non-reproductive females were generally halted in a previtellogenic stage of development for the most advanced oocytes which is consistent with a nutritionally related inhibition of gametogenesis close to the previous spawning period.  相似文献

For the first time, aspects of the reproduction of the little-known rock-borer mollusc Petricola lithophaga (Retzius, 1788) are described. Specimens were studied during the period from June 2012 to June 2014 (Black Sea, Sevastopol Bay). Histological methods were used to describe gametogenesis stages and spawning of the molluscs. Sex differentiation process, determination of sexual strategy, and gametogenesis of the annual fish Austrolebias charrua are established. Evidence of histological sex differentiation in an antero-posterior gradient was observed in pre-hatching stages. Sexual strategy corresponds to the "differentiated gonochoric" pattern. Histological analyses of adult gonads showed an asynchronous spawning mode for females and continuous spawning for males. Mature oocytes presented fluid yolk. Testis organization corresponded to a restricted spermatogonial model. Herein, we report the ultrastructural organization of the vitelline envelope and the main features of the sperm of A. charrua. Taking together these results also contribute to phylogenetic studies and provide base line data to propose A. charrua as a biomonitor of contamination in a protected area.  相似文献

Climate variability and the rapid warming of seas undoubtedly have huge ramifications for biological processes such as reproduction. As such, gametogenesis and spawning were investigated at two sites over 200 km apart on the south coast of Ireland in an ecosystem engineer, the common cockle, Cerastoderma edule. Both sites are classed as Special Areas of Conservation (SACs), but are of different water quality. Cerastoderma edule plays a significant biological role by recycling nutrients and affecting sediment structure, with impacts upon assemblage biomass and functional diversity. It plays a key role in food webs, being a common foodstuff for a number of marine birds including the oystercatcher. Both before and during the study (early 2010–mid 2011), Ireland experienced its two coldest winters for 50 years. As the research demonstrated only slight variation in the spawning period between sites, despite site differences in water and environmental quality, temperature and variable climatic conditions were the dominant factor controlling gametogenesis. The most significant finding was that the spawning period in the cockle extended over a greater number of months compared with previous studies and that gametogenesis commenced over winter rather than in spring. Extremely cold winters may impact on the cockle by accelerating and extending the onset and development of gametogenesis. Whether this impact is positive or negative would depend on the associated events occurring on which the cockle depends, that is, presence of primary producers and spring blooms, which would facilitate conversion of this extended gametogenesis into successful recruitment.  相似文献

We studied protein synthesis in the oocytes and ovary of the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus intermedius at different stages of the reproductive cycle after treatment with estradiol dipropionate. During the early development of oocytes and active gametogenesis, this estrogen induced the incorporation of 3H-leucine in the oocytes. The changes in synthetic activity of cells were accompanied by an elevated efficient incorporation of free amino acid in proteins due to its increased pool, increased tissue permeability for precursors, and increased rate of protein synthesis. Before spawning, estradiol dipropionate did not cause any changes in protein synthesis. After estradiol dipropionate treatment, the inhibitors of protein synthesis, puromycin and actinomycin D, decreased the intensity of 3H-leucine incorporation in the oocytes and protein synthesis in the ovary. The involvement of estradiol dipropionate in the regulation of protein synthesis in the sea urchin gonad is discussed.  相似文献

Oogenesis, spermatogenesis, and the sexual cycle of the bivalve Corbicula japonica in the estuary of the Kievka River (Primorye, Sea of Japan) were studied. The stages of development of germ cells and the role of auxiliary cells in gonads during vitellogenesis were described. The features of sperm morphology were recorded. It was shown that the reproductive cycle in C. japonica is determined by the water temperature, that gametogenesis starts at the boundary between April and May, that spawning occurs from mid-July to mid-September, and that gonads are in a stage of relative sexual inactivity in the autumn and winter.  相似文献

Summary

The annual cycles of gametogenesis, spawning and fertilization biology were investigated in the South African polychaete Arenicola loveni loveni (Kinberg, 1866). Sexes are strictly separate (gonochoric) with a 1:1 ratio and gametogenesis takes place in the coelomic cavity. Reproduction is iteroparous and occurs during a synchronized annual epidemic spawning event during the summer months of February or March, which lasts no longer than 2 weeks at around the time of highest annual seawater temperatures. A slight inter-annual variation in spawning time was observed between 2003 and 2004. Annual fecundity was estimated as 311,200 (± 82,040 standard deviations) oocytes per female per year. Oocytes are arrested at prophase I of the first meiotic division and require a maturation step prior to spawning and subsequent fertilization. Mean spawned oocyte diameter was 141.16 μm ± 0.43 SE. Sperm develop as morulae in the coelomic cavity and also require a maturation step prior to spawning. Spawning can be achieved by injection of prostomial homogenate in both males and females and by injection with 8,11,14- e cosatrienoic acid for males and can be delayed by temperature manipulation. Oocyte maturation and sperm maturation can be induced in vitro by incubating in prostomial homogenate.  相似文献

This review concerns itself with two aspects of reproductive biology: commencement of gametogenesis and spawning. The activation of gametogenesis followed by gonadal growth, with a subsequent release of gametes. The gamete formation-spawning cycle varies in duration from weekly to yearly periods depending upon the species and geographical origin. The importance of exogenous factors is discussed. Among those exogenous factors which can be demonstrated to affect the gamete formation-spawning cycle are food, salinity, light and temperature. Gonad growth constitutes a more significant fraction of the entire reproductive cycle than does spawning and gametogenesis. The time during which gametes are released occupies a small fraction of the entire reproductive cycle. Since spawning is such a dramatic act, it has been described in detail for many species. Numerous investigators have shown interest in the factors and relationships which work to insure synchronization of spawning. These studies are fully discussed. Some considerations of larval ecology in relation to parental reproductive patterns are given. Finally, the possible mechanism involved in coordination of reproduction is presented.

Pacific oysters, Crassostrea gigas, living at a range of tidal heights, routinely encounter large fluctuations in temperature. We demonstrate that levels of heat shock proteins (HSP) and other stress proteins (metallothioneins, MTs) quantified by ELISA, remained similar in gills, mantle and digestive gland between oysters inhabiting low and high tidal heights. In contrast, endogenous HSPs and MTs levels in gonad changed significantly during gametogenesis. In female gonads, the constitutive form of HSP70 and the MTs increased from immature (or resting) to mature stages (about more than 3-fold) and decreased after spawning. In male gonads, the same expression patterns were observed, whereas proteins levels decreased once fully mature. Females presented higher concentration of HSP70 and MTs than males during the spawning period. No significant difference in HSPs and MTs patterns was found among oysters sampled at low and high tidal heights. We hypothesize that the high level of stress proteins in eggs may increase survival of oyster progeny.  相似文献

Two distinct gonadotropins (GTHs) have been demonstrated in a number of teleost fishes. Although the physiological roles of GTHs have been extensively studied in salmonids, little is known about their biological functions in nonsalmonid fishes. In this study, to elucidate the role of GTH-I and GTH-II in reproduction, we cloned the alpha-glycoprotein subunit (alphaGSU) and gonadotropin beta subunits (Ibeta and IIbeta) of red seabream using the 5'- and 3'-RACE methods and used these cDNA probes to reveal changes in mRNA levels of each subunit during sexual maturation of both male and female red seabream. The nucleotide sequences of alphaGSU, Ibeta, and IIbeta are 629, 531, and 557 base pairs long, encoding peptides of 117, 120, and 146 amino acids, respectively. The deduced amino acid sequence of each mature subunit showed high homology with those of other teleosts. Northern blot analysis showed that Ibeta mRNA levels of males increase in association with gonadal development, whereas those of females remain low throughout sexual maturation, indicating sexual dimorphism in the expression pattern of Ibeta. In contrast, IIbeta mRNA levels of both sexes are maintained at high levels from the beginning of gametogenesis to spawning season. These results are different than those of salmonids and suggest that GTH-I may have important roles in male, but not female, gametogenesis. GTH-II may be involved in regulation of early and late gametogenesis in both male and female red seabream.  相似文献
