Experimental infections of Galba truncatula with Paramphistomum daubneyi were carried out at 24 degrees C to study the dynamics of larval development in snails dissected at regular intervals and to determine if metacercarial production might be improved. When the shell height of snails (4, 5, 6 or 7 mm) at exposure increased (experiment A), the total number of metacercariae was significantly higher in the 6- and 7-mm snails than in the other two groups, and the differentiation period was shortened (the first cercariae encysted at day 35 post-exposure (p.e.) instead of day 40 in the 4- and 5-mm groups). When the number of miracidia (two, three or five) for each 6-mm high G. truncatula increased (experiment B), a significant decrease of snail survival at day 30 p.e., a significant augmentation of prevalence, and a significant increase of metacercarial production were noted. In the two- and three-miracidium groups, the number of metacercariae was close to that found in the 6-mm snails from experiment 1, whereas they showed slower growth from day 45 to day 65 in the five-miracidium group. In the two groups of lambs infected with metacercariae encysted at days 45 or 60 p.e., no difference in the numbers of adult worms was noted. In contrast, in the case of 35-day encysted larvae, the number of adult worms was clearly lower. Snail dissection allowed higher metacercarial production, a saving of 12-15 days at 24 degrees C to obtain these larvae, and a substantial decrease of their cost price for commercial production.  相似文献

Snails and freshwater fish were examined from four ponds in the Meinung township in which Clonorchis sinensis was known to be endemic 18 years ago. No metacercariae were found in 478 Tilapia nilotica, whereas of 451 Ctenopharyngodon idellus examined, 16.2%, 3.3% and 0.9% were found to be infected with Haplorchis pumilio, H. taichui and Clonorchis sinensis, respectively. In addition, there were some unidentified metacercariae in 12.0% of Ctenopharyngodon idellus examined. Overall, no positive correlation between infection rates and sizes of infected fish was shown. Six species of snails were collected in this survey and two frequently-occurring snails, Melanoides tuberculata and Thiara granifera were commonly infected with H. pumilio. Reasons for the prevalence of Haplorchis species and the absence of Clonorchis sinensis in fish and snail hosts in a previously reported endemic area for human clonorchiasis are discussed.  相似文献

As a test of the energy limitation hypothesis (ELH), we predicted that temperature would have a significant influence on the infectivity of metacercariae of the digenetic trematode Zygocotyle lunata. Snails infected with Z. lunata were collected from ponds near Crawfordsville, Indiana, isolated at room temperature, and examined for the release of cercariae. Newly encysted metacercariae were collected and incubated 1-30 days at 1 of 5 temperatures (0, 3, 25, 31, 37 C). Twenty-five cysts were fed to each of 5 or 10 mice per treatment group (temperature). At 17 days postinfection, mice were killed and worms were recovered; data were collected on levels of infection in each group and the total body area of each worm. No worms were found in mice fed cysts that had been held at 0 C or 37 C (after 30 days). There were no differences in prevalence, infectivity, or mean intensity among the 3, 25, and 31 C treatments. Infectivity of metacercariae incubated at 37 C for 1 day was significantly greater than in all other treatments, while infectivity of metacercariae in the 37 C/15-day treatment was significantly lower than in all others. Mean body area of worms at 37 C/15 days was significantly greater than at other temperatures, suggesting density-dependent increases in growth. These results, particularly those from the 37 C treatments, are consistent with the ELH; infectivity was lower at high temperatures or when incubated for more time at 1 temperature (fewer energy reserves). It is suggested that microhabitat conditions experienced by metacercariae of Z. lunata could contribute to longer larval life, thus influencing this parasite's temporal dispersal.  相似文献

Inducible defenses are important in the life strategies of many taxa. In some species of marine gastropods, water-borne chemical cues from potential predators induce defensive changes in shell form and differences in growth rate. We examined such phenotypic plasticity in the direct-developing snail, Littorina subrotundata (Carpenter, 1864). Among experimental field populations of L. subrotundata exposed to differing intensities of predation by the purple shore crab, Hemigrapsus nudus (Dana, 1851), snails collected from predation-intense environments often had more massive shells than closely related snails from adjacent environments where predation was negligible. Snails collected from both environments were raised in tanks containing cages of H. nudus that were feeding on conspecific snails and compared to a control group raised in the absence of this stimulus. Most snails developed significantly more massive shells in the presence of the crabs suggesting that adaptive phenotypic plasticity may account for some of the variation we observed in the field. In one case, snails from a predation-intense environment did not exhibit a statistically significant amount of plasticity, but instead grew a more massive shell irrespective of the laboratory stimulus. We interpret this as evidence for a genetic difference in the plasticity of shell form among experimental populations, caused by intense selection by H. nudus. There was no statistical difference in the growth rates of snails among treatments.  相似文献

In this study, we focused on the drivers of micro- and mesohabitat variation of drift in a small trout stream with the goal of understanding the factors that influence the abundance of prey for drift-feeding fish. We hypothesized that there would be a positive relationship between velocity and drift abundance (biomass concentration, mg/m3) across multiple spatial scales, and compared seasonal variation in abundance of drifting terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates in habitats that represent the fundamental constituents of stream channels (pools, glides, runs, and riffles). We also examined how drift abundance varied spatially within the water column. We found no relationship between drift concentration and velocity at the microhabitat scale within individual pools or riffles, suggesting that turbulence and short distances between high- and low-velocity microhabitats minimize changes in drift concentration through settlement in slower velocity microhabitats. There were also minimal differences in summer low-flow drift abundance at the mesohabitat scale, although drift concentration was highest in riffle habitats. Similarly, there was no differentiation of drifting invertebrate community structure among summer samples collected from pools, glides, runs, and riffles. Drift concentration was significantly higher in winter than in summer, and variation in drift within individual mesohabitat types (e.g., pools or riffles) was lower during winter high flows. As expected, summer surface samples also had a significantly higher proportion of terrestrial invertebrates and higher overall biomass than samples collected from within the water column. Our results suggest that turbulence and the short length of different habitat types in small streams tend to homogenize drift concentration, and that spatial variation in drift concentrations may be affected as much by fish predation as by entrainment rates from the benthos. Copper in the form of copper sulfate (CuSO4) decreases the survival of Biomphalaria glabrata snails, but the effects of this molluscicide on Echinostoma caproni and Echinostoma trivolvis, 2 species of digeneans that use B. glabrata as intermediate hosts, are not known. Studies were done on the effects of various concentrations of CuSO4 in artificial spring water (ASW) on the survival and infectivity of E. caproni and E. trivolvis cercariae. Solutions containing 1.0, 0.1, and 0.01% CuSO4 were 100% lethal within 2 hr of exposure for both species. Time to 50% mortality in 0.001% CuSO4 was 8 hr for E. caproni and 16 hr for E. trivolvis; at 24 hr, the controls showed 50 and 65% mortality, respectively. Treatment of cercariae of both species for 0.5 hr in 0.001% CuSO4 had no effect on the ability of cercariae to form normal cysts in juvenile B. glabrata snails. However, treatment with 0.01% CuSO4 for 0.5 hr caused a significant reduction in the ability of cercariae of both species to encyst in snails. Treatment of encysted metacercariae of both species in 0.001% CuSO4 for I hr had no effect on subsequent excystation of these echinostomes in a trypsin-bile salts medium, whereas concentrations of 1.0, 0.1, and 0.01% CuSO4 and 1.0 and 0.1% CuSO4 decreased chemical excystation of E. caproni and E. trivolvis cysts, respectively. Survival studies on the effects of CuSO4 in Locke's solution on chemically excysted metacercariae of both species were also done. Excysted metacercariae of both species were killed by 2 hr in either 0.1 or 0.01% CuSO4 in Locke's solution. However, time to 50% mortality for both species of excysted metacercariae in 0.001% CuSO4 was approximately 5 hr. Time to 50% mortality for the controls was about 12 hr. Survival of juvenile B. glabrata snails was also examined. All B. glabrata snails were dead by 6 hr in 1 and 0.1% CuSO4 in ASW. Biomphalaria glabrata snails showed 50% mortality by about 6 hr in 0.01% CuSO4 and about 80% were still alive at 24 hr in 0.001% CuSO4. All controls were alive at 24 hr, at which time the experiment was terminated. Concentrations greater than 0.001% CuSO4 increased snail mortality, as well as that of the cercariae and excysted metacercariae of E. caproni and E. trivolvis. Our findings suggest that concentrations of copper sufficient to eliminate juvenile B. glabratta snails are also sufficient to kill the cercariae and excysted metacercariae of these digeneans but not the encysted metacercariae, which may be protected by their cyst walls.  相似文献

Outside its native range, the invasive New Zealand mud snail (NZMS), Potamopyrgus antipodarum, is rarely reported to harbor parasites. To test this observation, 7 sites along the Snake River and Polecat Creek in the Grand Teton National Park/John D Rockefeller Memorial Parkway area (Wyoming) were surveyed for native aquatic snails, NZMS, and associated digenean trematodes, in July 2005. At 6 sites, native snails harbored patent digenean infections; within 2 hr, < or =10% of lymnaeid snails shed furcocercariae or xiphidiocercariae, and < or =42% of physid snails released furcocercariae or echinostome cercariae. Partial 18S rDNA sequences were recovered from several furcocercariae. Potamopyrgus antipodarum was present at, and collected from, 5 sites. Polymerase chain reaction assays targeting digenean rDNA sequences in DNA extracted from pools of 150 NZMS snails did not detect parasites. The examination of 960 NZMS by overnight shedding yielded 1 occurrence of (surface-encysted) metacercariae of an unclassified notocotylid (based on 18S and 28S rDNA sequences). The dissection of 150 ethanol-fixed NZMS (30/site) revealed 2 types of digenean metacercariae encysted in tissues of 5 snails from Polecat Creek. Thus, invasive NZMS may serve as first and second intermediate host for digenean parasites.  相似文献

High performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) was used to analyse the neutral lipids in the rediae, cercariae, and encysted metacercariae of Echinostoma caproni from Biomphalaria glabrata snails. Visual observations of the chromatograms showed that the most abundant lipid fraction in all stages was free sterol. Quantification of the free sterol revealed mean weights of 2.7 +/- 0.64 ng per redia, 0.53 +/- 0.023 ng per cercaria, and 0.081 +/- 0.0098 ng per encysted metacercaria. Oil Red O staining of the larval stages confirmed the presence of lipids within the rediae and cercariae but did not show lipids in the encysted metacercariae. The dimunition in neutral lipids from the cercarial to the encysted metacercarial stage does not support a previous observation that fat increases in successive phases of the digenean life cycle.  相似文献

Trematode cercariae inhabit predictable environments and respond to trigger cues with genetically fixed releaser responses when foraging for the upstream host. The effect of light and gravity on the transmission of Echinostoma caproni cercariae to Biomphalaria glabrata was investigated experimentally. Transmission chambers were constructed of clear polyvinyl chloride pipe. Snails were constrained within the chamber to prevent movement, while permitting the cercariae to swim freely. A trial consisted of 2 infected B. glabrata shedding E. caproni cercariae placed at the center of the chamber, with 5 uninfected B. glabrata placed 10 cm on either side (or above and below) of the shedding snails as sentinels. There was no significant difference in the prevalence of infection sentinel snails in either experiment (light vs. dark or top vs. bottom); however, mean intensity was significantly higher in sentinel snails in the dark portion of the chamber (42.5 vs. 10.4; P = 0.001) and the top of the transmission chamber (66.1 vs. 38.0; P = 0.0003). There was a high correlation between the number of metacercariae collected from sentinel snails and the total number of infective units (metacercariae + unsuccessful cercariae): r = 0.992 (light vs. dark) and r = 0.957 (top vs. bottom), respectively, at cercariae densities estimated from 22 to 3,304/L. The results suggest that cercariae of E. caproni exhibit negative photo- and geotaxis in searching for a second intermediate host. Stereotypical releaser responses to environmental trigger cues (light and gravity) allow E. caproni cercariae to exploit flexible strategies for completing the life cycle consistent with the broad range second intermediate and definitive hosts used by E. caproni cercariae and adults, respectively.  相似文献

The intertidal gastropod, Tegula funebralis (A. Adams) exhibits a shore-level size gradient with mean shell size increasing in a down-shore direction. Snails transferred to zones where they do not usually occur migrated back towards their original zone, thus re-establishing a size gradient and implying differential movement among size classes. Both large (≥2.1 cm shell width) and small (≤ 1.77 cm) snails were photonegative on a horizontal surface and geonegative in the laboratory; there were no statistical differences between size classes. Light, however, inhibited upward, or caused downward, movement of large snails on vertical surfaces. Small snails were unaffected, ranging higher on illuminated vertical surfaces than large snails. Both sizes exhibited similar distributions in the dark. In an experimental chamber providing both emersed and immersed surfaces, T. funebralis established vertical size gradients when the chamber was illuminated from above. It is suggested that light is an important factor in the formation and maintenance of Tegula's shore-level size gradient. In response to water-borne chemicals derived from the sea star Pisaster ochraceus (Brandt), large snails moved up vertical surfaces in greater proportion than small. In response to contact with the predator, large snails moved away faster than small and individuals collected from crevices in the field moved away slower than those collected from open rock faces. Although predation may select for a size gradient in Tegulafunebralis, it is unlikely that responses to predatory sea stars directly and proximally cause or maintain them over the short term.  相似文献

The shells of Lymnaea stagnalis show great morphological variability. This phenomenon has been described as the result of an environmental influence. The main object of the present study was to compare some biometric data from shells of naturally infected and uninfected snails from 25 different lakes in the central part of Poland. The height of the shell, the height of the spiral, and the width of the shell were measured. Some inter- and intrapopulation differences among individuals were found. Greater variability of shell shape was observed among snails parasitized with digenean larvae than in nonparasitized ones. Snails infected with Echinoparyphium aconiatum, Echinostoma revolutum, Diplostomum pseudospathaceum, and Opisthioglyphe ranae differed in shell shape compared with uninfected individuals. Snails infected with Plagiorchis elegans did not differ from uninfected individuals. The same was true of snails in which the commensal oligochaete, Chaetogaster limnei, was found. The results of the present study support the assumption that the deformation of shells of the snails under study was in some way influenced by the presence of certain species of digenetic trematodes.  相似文献

In freshwater systems, parasitological studies have mainly been carried out on vertebrates and molluscs, but little is known about parasites of aquatic insects. We describe the trematodes and nematodes parasitizing the benthic insects of an Andean Patagonian stream and the presence of parasites in the terrestrial adult stages. Members of 3 of 20 insect taxa were found to be parasitized by larval nematodes, and members of six taxa harbored metacercariae of digeneans. In benthic samples, chironomids, simuliids (Order Diptera), and baetids (Order Ephemeroptera) harbored mermithid larvae (Nematoda). The stonefly Antarctoperla michaelseni (Order Plecoptera), the caddisfly Smicridea annulicornis (Order Trichoptera), a watersnipe fly (Order Diptera: Athericidae), and three species of leptophlebiid mayflies (Order Ephemeroptera) were parasitized by encysted plagiorchiid metacercariae (Order Plagiorchiida). Most metacercariae were found in the three species of mayflies with prevalences ranging 15–63% and mean intensities ranging 1.2–4.9. Prevalence declined from summer to early winter, probably because of the emergence of infected nymphs and the recruitment of uninfected new cohorts. The imagos had live metacercariae with higher prevalences and intensities of infection than nymphs. We suggest that these plagiorchiids have an allogenic life cycle, involving a terrestrial definitive host.

A total of 4,298 snails Bradybaena similaris were collected from the rural area of Rio de Janeiro County and from the Counties of Paracambi and Itaguai, State of Rio de Janeiro. Two thousand and five of these snails had metacercariae in their pericardial cavity. The collecting was done between October 1983 and September 1986. The annual average prevalences were: 42.89% (1st year), 43.42% (2nd year) and 55.86% (3rd year). Experimental infection in chicks allowed the identification of these metacercariae as Postharmostomum gallinum. The small variation in size observed among metacercariae from the same host indicates that recruitment does not occur on a continuous basis. Statistical analysis showed no correlation between the snail size and the number of metacercariae in the pericardical cavity, and that the snail mortality observed in the laboratory was due to the parasitic infection.  相似文献

Invasive species can drive native organisms to extinction by limiting movement and accessibility to essential resources. The purpose of this study was to determine if zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) affect the burrowing ability and growth rate of a native snail, Campeloma decisum. Snails with and without zebra mussels were collected from Douglas Lake, MI, and burrowing depths were studied in both the laboratory and Douglas Lake. Growth rates were calculated as the amount of shell growth from 2004 to 2005. Both the tendency of snails to burrow and the depth to which they burrowed into the substrate were significantly decreased by the presence of zebra mussels on snail shells in both laboratory and lake experiments. There was no difference in the percentage of snails that exhibited growth as a function of zebra mussel presence. However, for those snails that grew, there was a 50% higher growth rate for snails without zebra mussels compared to snails with zebra mussels. These negative effects of zebra mussels on growth and burrowing ability will likely lead to decreases in snail population densities in the future. Handling editor: S. Wellekens  相似文献

We compared macroinvertebrate samples from submerged undercut banks with samples from rifles and pools in a low-gradient-meadow reach of a small stream on the Snowy Range, southeastern Wyoming, from July to September 1985. Macroinvertebrates collected from submerged undercut banks were similar to those collected from riffles and pools, but densities varied among the three habitat types. In July Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Trichoptera, Coleoptera, and Diptera, as well as Hydracarina, were all substantially more numerous in samples from undercut banks than from riffles or pools. By contrast in September little difference was observed in the abundance of macroinvertebrates in samples from submerged undercut banks, riffles and pools. While forming only 8.5% of the area of aquatic habitat within the study reach submerged undercut banks were estimated to contain 44% of the aquatic insects in July and 30% in August. Further, submerged undercut banks are macroinvertebrate habitat in this subalpine meadow stream, contributing to overall macroinvertebrate abundance and probably an additional food source for trout.  相似文献

The primary function of the gastropod shell is protection. However, shells that function well in one environment may be maladaptive in another. Upon infection, the snail shell protects internal parasites and it is to the parasite's advantage to optimize, or not interfere with, shell functionality. However, parasites, particularly trematodes, are often pathogenic and it is not clear if parasitism will induce environment‐dependent or ‐independent changes to gastropod shells. We conducted a field study and a complementary laboratory experiment to examine the effects of trematode parasitism on shell characteristics (shape, size, and crush resistance) of Physa acuta snails in flow and nonflow environments using geometric morphometrics and crush assays. Field results indicate wetland (nonflow) snails had large, crush resistant shells with narrow apertures and tall spires. In contrast, stream (flow) snails had small, weak shells with wide apertures and short spires. Parasitism had no apparent effect on the crush resistance of wetland snails but significantly reduced the crush resistance of stream snails. Parasitism had no significant effect on overall shell shape in stream or wetland snails. Similar to the results of our field study, nonflow tank snails had significantly more crush resistant shells than flow tank snails. Additionally, the shapes of flow and nonflow tank snails significantly differed where nonflow tank snails resembled wetland snails and flow tank snails resembled stream snails. For laboratory snails, parasitism reduced crush resistance regardless of flow/nonflow treatment. Our results demonstrate that habitat and/or flow treatment was the primary factor affecting P. acuta shell morphology and that trematode parasitism played a secondary role. J.
