Having argued that phenotypic variation with respect to the component of fitness involved in withstanding density stress is useful for the persistence of populations through time, the sources of such variation are described. Age differences and differences caused by the accidental encounters of dissimilar microenvironments are non-genetic in origin. Genetic bases for phenotypic variation can either be proximate (each individual having a unique genotype) or ultimate. The latter case is one in which the genotypes of individuals are such that the progeny they produce are phenotypically variable. Selection favouring such genotypes can be shown to be Darwinian; group selection is not required. A means for revealing instances of the ultimate genetic control of phenotypic variation is suggested: measures of what should be error variance prove to be larger than those which should, under normal circumstances, include error variance. The last increment of variation that causes what might otherwise be repetitive structures to differ can be ascribed to decisions that are genetically pre-set within developmental programmes.  相似文献

The role of stereology and morphometry (including image analysis) in histopathology is considered. Diagnostic histopathology has its own character, which should be considered when quantitative methods are applied. Three different types of studies in histopathology can be distinguished: prospective, retrospective and routine diagnostic studies. The variation in these studies is due to differences in the methods and differences in how the methods are applied. The overall variation is smallest in prospective studies and largest in routine diagnostic studies. Statistical classification of the overall variation does not cover all relevant aspects of the situation in which we study the sample from one individual patient. In that situation, we do not get support from the samples of other patients. In fact, we should speak about group morphometry (statistical morphometry) when samples from several patients are studied and diagnostic morphometry when the sample from one individual patient is under investigation. In the former case, simple morphometric methods may be applicable (the researcher is interested in mean values). In the latter case, one would often like to analyze the sample in more detail. This is why the diagnostic situation may benefit from computerized image analysis, which allows collection of large amounts of data in a short time. On the other hand, the great variation between the pathologic and the normal can allow the use of simple methods. The above basic principles need be considered before morphometric and stereologic methods are applied. These methods are simple in practice and they should be included in the training of all pathologists.  相似文献

芦苇生态幅极广,适生于多种生境类型。不同的环境选择压力如水深、盐度、养分、气候等交互影响致使芦苇个体及种群间发生不同程度的分化和变异,形成了形态、生理或遗传上互有差异、异地性的不同生态型。尽管基于芦苇表型变异以及遗传变异进行生态型划分的研究已开展很多,但针对芦苇生态型变异规律及其可能的形成机制的认知仍存在较多分歧。在总结近年来有关芦苇生态型研究文献的基础上,通过对影响芦苇生态型变异的主要因素——环境因素和遗传因素的分析,以期为芦苇生态型的划分及其可能的形成机制提供新的研究思路。(1)空间尺度的选择应成为研究者分析、划分芦苇生态型的首要定位。在较大的地理空间尺度上,高度异质性的生境导致某些性状的变异式样具有相对的不连续性,可作为不同芦苇生态型鉴别与描述的主要依据;(2)在合理的尺度定位、取样设计和统计分析的基础上开展的表型变异研究,及进一步基于种群水平的分子标记研究(分子指纹特征或特有等位基因),可为芦苇生态型的鉴定、划分提供更为可靠的参考数据,并且可以甄别生境差异(环境响应)和遗传变异对芦苇不同生态型分化的贡献;(3)应同时进行不同生态型的特定性状与功能(株高、茎粗、生物量、生理抗逆性、水体污染物净化能力等)的定位,推动优良基因型的选育与扩繁。  相似文献

The Evolutionarily Significant Unit (ESU) was conceptualized in 1986 as a conservation unit below the species level, theoretically applicable to a wide range of taxa. The concept has gained support, and various definitions or criteria, some of which are inconsistent with each other, have since been proposed. Recent critiques of the ESU have pointed out the dominance of definitions biased to the identification of long-term isolation or neutral genetic variation, which has largely ignored the adaptive components. We present here the validity of such claims and show how the ESU definitions have actually been applied in research. We surveyed scientific journals for original papers supporting ESU designations and determined who among the proponents of ESU definitions have gained wider support. Our results indicate that indeed there are inconsistencies with the original concept and with the existing definitions. Although the original concept recommended both ecological and genetic data as the basis for identification of ESUs, which reflect true evolutionary variation, recent definitions have become biased to either neutral genetic variation or adaptive variation. The definition which uses genetic data to assess neutral genetic variation (long-term isolation) has gained major support, and therefore validates the earlier claims. To bridge the gap between the original concept and the practical application, we propose the use of partial ESU and full ESU designations. The application of full ESU should be limited solely to when both information about neutral genetic variation and adaptive variation are available. In other cases, in which only a part of the variation is examined, we should use the term partial ESU (e.g., molecular-based ESU) and continue to investigate focal populations from other aspects of variations to designate full ESU.  相似文献

Using multi-fractal detrended fluctuation analysis (MF-DFA), the scaling features of wind speed time series (WSTS) could be explored. In this paper, we discuss the influence of sub-daily variation, which is a natural feature of wind, in MF-DFA of WSTS. First, the choice of the lower bound of the segment length, a significant parameter of MF-DFA, was studied. The results of expanding the lower bound into sub-daily scope shows that an abrupt declination and discrepancy of scaling exponents is caused by the inability to keep the whole diel process of wind in one single segment. Additionally, the specific value, which is effected by the sub-daily feature of local meteo-climatic, might be different. Second, the intra-day temporal order of wind was shuffled to determine the impact of diel variation on scaling exponents of MF-DFA. The results illustrate that disregarding diel variation leads to errors in scaling. We propose that during the MF-DFA of WSTS, the segment length should be longer than 1 day and the diel variation of wind should be maintained to avoid abnormal phenomena and discrepancy in scaling exponents.  相似文献

We present several predictions concerning the expression of genetic variation in, and covariation among, gender-related traits in perfect-flowered plant taxa with different breeding systems. We start with the inference that the pollen:ovule (P/O) ratio in obligately autogamous species (in which the ovules in a flower are fertilized only by the pollen it produces) should be under much stronger stabilizing selection than in outcrossing taxa. Consequently, we predict that obligately autogamous taxa should exhibit lower genetic coefficients of variation in the P/O ratio. Nevertheless, genetic variation in both pollen and ovule production per flower might persist within autogamous as well as outcrossing populations. In autogamous taxa, genotypes with relatively few pollen grains and ovules per flower (but producing relatively high numbers of flowers) and genotypes with comparatively high numbers of gametes per flower (but producing relatively few flowers) could co-exist if lifetime flower production is selectively neutral. In contrast, in outcrossers, the maintenance of genetic variation in ovule and pollen production per flower might result predominantly from their ability to maintain variation in phenotypic and functional gender. Given genetic variation in primary sexual traits, we predict that the genetic correlation between investment in male and female gametes per flower should qualitatively differ between selfers and outcrossers. We predict a positive genetic correlation between pollen and ovule production per flower in obligately autogamous taxa, primarily because strong stabilizing selection on the P/O ratio should select against the gender specialists that would be necessary to effect a negative genetic correlation between mean pollen and ovule production per flower. Moreover, the fact that autogamous individuals are 50% female and 50% male means that gender-biased phenotypes cannot be functionally gender-biased, preventing selection from favouring phenotypic extremes. In contrast, in outcrossing taxa, in which functionally male- and female-biased genotypes may co-exist, the maintenance of contrasting genders could contribute to the expression of negative genetic correlations between pollen and ovule production per flower. We discuss these and a number of corollary predictions, and we provide a preliminary empirical test of the first prediction. It has been suggested that patterns of craniodental variation in living hominids (Gorilla, Homo, Pan, and Pongo) may be useful for evaluating variation in fossil hominid assemblages. Using this approach, a fossil sample exhibiting a pattern of variation that deviates from one shared among living taxa would be regarded as taxonomically heterogeneous. Here we examine patterns of tooth crown size and shape variation in great apes and humans to determine 1) if these taxa share a pattern of dental variation, and 2) if such a pattern can reliably discriminate between samples that contain single species and those that contain multiple species. We use parametric and nonparametric correlation methods to establish the degree of pattern similarity among taxa, and randomization tests to assess their statistical significance. The results of this study show that extant hominids do not share a pattern of dental size variation, and thus these taxa cannot be used to generate expectations for patterns of size variation in fossil hominid species. The hominines (Gorilla, Homo, and Pan) do share a pattern of shape variation in the mandibular dentition; however, Pongo is distinct, and thus it is unclear which, if either, pattern should be expected in fossil hominids. Moreover, in this case, most combined-species samples exhibit patterns of shape variation that are similar to those for single hominine species samples. Thus, although a common pattern of shape variation is present in the mandibular dentition, it is not useful for recognizing taxonomically mixed paleontological samples.  相似文献

Evenness indices are numerous but the lack of knowledge of their properties is a limitation to their biological usefulness. 15 evenness indices, two of them being recently proposed, were studied in this work. We investigated the sensitivity of each index using (1) 189 macroinvertebrate communities sampled in the field, and (2) a set of communities modified in a controlled way. There is no single way to measure evenness. We demonstrated that a measure should be chosen considering (1) the kind of data analysed and, (2) the index properties wanted by users. Depending on the ecological data set the index should be more sensitive to variations in rare, median or abundant species. For most of macroinvertebrate community analyses, a convenient evenness index requirs to be symmetric, unsensitive to variation on rare taxa, with a large range of variation and can be compared with a diversity index. Depending on diversity measure used, five indices correspond to these criteria: EPielou, EHurlbert, E–ln(D), E1–D, EMI. Our results were summarized in a table which may help users to select a convenient evenness measure according to their specific data. Concerning index properties, three main features that an evenness index should meet are briefly discussed: dependence with richness, symmetry criteria and variation range. A revue of this controversial subject allowed a best understanding of values obtained with evenness measures depending on their own features.  相似文献

Many hoverflies (Syrphidae) mimic wasps or bees through colour or behavioural adaptations. The relationship between phenotypic variation in colour pattern and mimetic perfection (as determined by pigeons) was investigated in three species of Müllerian mimics (Vespula spp.) and 10 Batesian hoverfly mimics, plus two non-mimetic species of flies. Four predictions were tested: (i) Batesian mimics might be imperfect because they are in the process of evolving towards perfection, hence there should be a positive relationship between variation and imperfection; (ii) some Batesian mimics are imperfect because they do not have the appropriate genetic variation to improve and have evolved to be as good as possible, hence there should be no differences between species, all displaying a low level of variation; (iii) very common hoverflies should show the highest levels of variation because they outnumber their models, resulting in high predation and a breakdown in the mimetic relationship; and (iv) social wasps (Vespula) have such a powerful defence that anything resembling a wasp, both Müllerian and perfect Batesian mimics, would be avoided, resulting in relaxed selection and high variance. Poor mimics may still evolve to resemble wasps as well as possible and display lower levels of variation. The data only provided support for the fourth prediction. The Müllerian mimics, one of the most perfect Batesian mimics, and the non-mimetic flies displayed much higher levels of variation than the other species of Batesian mimics.  相似文献

Glycosylation of the conserved asparagine residue in the CH2 domain is the most common posttranslational modification of recombinant monoclonal antibodies. Ideally, a consistent oligosaccharide profile should be maintained from early clinical material to commercial material for the development of recombinant monoclonal therapeutics, though variation in the profile is a typical result of process changes. The risk of oligosaccharide variation posed to further development is required to be thoroughly evaluated based on its impact on antibody structure, stability, efficacy and safety. The variation should be controlled within a range so that there is no detrimental impact on safety and efficacy and thus allowing the use of early phase safety and efficacy data to support project advancement to later phase. This review article focuses on the current scientific understanding of the commonly observed oligosaccharides found in recombinant monoclonal antibodies and their impact on structure, stability and biological functions, which are the basis to evaluate safety and efficacy. 淫羊藿属是分类学上研究的热点和难点,其类群发表和修订均较频繁。为更清晰掌握淫羊藿属的性状变异,该文在查阅该属研究成果和标本的基础上,结合课题组野外调查和分析,对该属重要性状进行系统梳理。花瓣式样是淫羊藿属分类的最重要依据,但并非绝对稳定,种内花瓣形态可能存在丰富变异。花瓣颜色、花药颜色,甚至花的大小至少在部分类群中不宜作为分类的主要依据。根茎性状在多数类群中不失为一个有用的分类性状,但不能一概而论,应基于广泛调查。多数类群的花茎上叶的类型及小叶存在不同程度的变异,在实际应用中存在一定困难。非腺毛特征十分复杂,不同样本存在不同程度差异,不宜作为物种鉴别的关键依据。淫羊藿属植物栽培后植株普遍更矮小,提示开展自然生境下的调查和形态观测对掌握物种形态特征非常必要。中国淫羊藿属类群仍处于活跃进化中,其形态变异复杂,物种鉴定和资源利用时应足够谨慎。  相似文献

Individually distinct vocalizations play an important role in animal communication, allowing call recipients to respond differentially based on caller identity. However, which of the many calls in a species'' repertoire should have more acoustic variability and be more recognizable is less apparent. One proposed hypothesis is that calls used over long distances should be more distinct because visual cues are not available to identify the caller. An alternative hypothesis proposes that close calls should be more recognizable because of their importance in social interactions. To examine which hypothesis garners more support, the acoustic variation and individual distinctiveness of eight call types of six wild western gorilla (Gorilla gorilla) females were investigated. Acoustic recordings of gorilla calls were collected at the Mondika Research Center (Republic of Congo). Acoustic variability was high in all gorilla calls. Similar high inter-individual variation and potential for identity coding (PIC) was found for all call types. Discriminant function analyses confirmed that all call types were individually distinct (although for call types with lowest sample size - hum, grumble and scream - this result cannot be generalized), suggesting that neither the distance at which communication occurs nor the call social function alone can explain the evolution of identity signaling in western gorilla communication.  相似文献

Genomic data have the potential to revolutionize the delineation of conservation units (CUs) by allowing the detection of adaptive genetic variation, which is otherwise difficult for rare, endangered species. In contrast to previous recommendations, we propose that the use of neutral versus adaptive markers should not be viewed as alternatives. Rather, neutral and adaptive markers provide different types of information that should be combined to make optimal management decisions. Genetic patterns at neutral markers reflect the interaction of gene flow and genetic drift that affects genome-wide variation within and among populations. This population genetic structure is what natural selection operates on to cause adaptive divergence. Here, we provide a new framework to integrate data on neutral and adaptive markers to protect biodiversity.  相似文献

Spatial variation in phenology can occur at small spatial scales over which individuals can disperse or forage within one generation. Previous studies have assumed that variations in phenological peaks are caused by differences in abiotic environmental characteristics. However, environments should generally be similar among local habitats over small spatial scales. When the local population size is small, the phenological peak of the local population should be strongly affected by the variation in timing expressed by individuals. If a regional population consists of small local subpopulations (e.g., a metapopulation), the stochastic processes regulated by population sizes may explain the spatial variation in phenology. In this study, we quantitatively evaluated the extent of the spatial and annual variations in the breeding phenology of the forest green tree frog, Rhacophorus arboreus habiting a small area (<10 km2). The spatial variation in phenological peaks among 25 breeding sites was large over 6 years. This spatial variation was not explained by differences in air temperature or water depth. Randomization tests revealed that a large portion of the spatial variation could be explained by differences in population size, without considering site-specific factors. Annual variations in phenological peaks tended to be greater for smaller populations. These results imply that the stochastic process might have caused the spatial and annual variations in the phenological peaks of R. arboreus observed in the study region. Understanding spatiotemporal variation in phenology determined by stochastic process would be important to better predict interspecific interactions and (meta)population dynamics at small spatial scales.  相似文献

Theory predicts that natural selection will erode additive genetic variation in fitness-related traits. However, numerous studies have found considerable heritable variation in traits related to immune function, which should be closely linked to fitness. This could be due to trade-offs maintaining variation in these traits. We used the Egyptian cotton leafworm, Spodoptera littoralis, as a model system to examine the quantitative genetics of insect immune function. We estimated the heritabilities of several different measures of innate immunity and the genetic correlations between these immune traits and a number of life history traits. Our results provide the first evidence for a potential genetic trade-off within the insect immune system, with antibacterial activity (lysozyme-like) exhibiting a significant negative genetic correlation with haemocyte density, which itself is positively genetically correlated with both haemolymph phenoloxidase activity and cuticular melanization. We speculate on a potential trade-off between defence against parasites and predators, mediated by larval colour, and its role in maintaining genetic variation in traits under natural selection.  相似文献

Sexually antagonistic polymorphisms are polymorphisms in which the allele that is advantageous in one sex is deleterious in the other sex. In an influential 1984 paper, W. Rice hypothesized that such polymorphisms should be relatively common on the X chromosome (or on the W in female‐heterogametic species) but relatively rare on the autosomes. Here, I show that there are plausible assumptions under which the reverse is expected to be true, and point out recent studies that give evidence for sexually antagonistic variation on the autosomes. Although more work is needed to resolve the issue, it is premature to conclude that the X chromosome is a “hot spot” for the accumulation of sexually antagonistic variation.  相似文献

A model is developed which makes predictions about intraspecific variation in parental care patterns. The model assumes that animals can respond to predictable changes in conditions for rearing offspring, and can adjust the amount of parental care they provide. The following predictions are made: (1) Where the environment or the parent's condition varies predictably, animals should provide more care to successive broods under improving conditions, and less care under deteriorating conditions. (2) In stochastic environments, variation in brood success during the period of parental care should have a predictable effect on subsequent brood-care. (3) In non-uniform environments or populations, parents facing higher than average mortality risks of types independent of parental effort should increase care provided for current offspring. Parents whose mortality risks result from parental effort should provide less care for their offspring. These predictions are assessed in relation to the available empirical evidence. Much of this suggests that parental care patterns vary within species and may often be adjusted by individuals according to prevailing and projected conditions. Data could not be found to test all aspects of the theory, however, so further field studies would be valuable.  相似文献

Two models that explain variation in behaviour associated with locating and accepting different habitats (host plants) are described and analyzed. One model describes the dynamics of search-mode ontogeny in Battus philenor butterflies. This model predicts that the proportion of females using either of two search modes at any given time reflects an equilibrium between the rate at which females switch from using a narrow-leaf search mode to using a broad-leaf search mode and the rate at which the opposite switch is made. Preliminary data suggest that the model predicts reasonably well the observed seasonal change in predominant search mode in the field. The second model, really a set of related models, describes the dynamics of genes that influence searching behaviour. Several predictions of these models are: (1) gentic variation for proportional allocation of offspring to different habitats should be more common under soft-selection regimes than under hard-selection regimes. (2) Polyphagy should be more common under soft selection than under hard selection. (3) Whether changes in the relative abundances or relative quality of different habitats lead to evolutionary change in apportionment of offspring to habitats depends in a complex way on mode of population regulation, method of search, type of limitation of fecundity and genetic properties of loci affecting preference. Although the two types of models superficially appear to address different types of behavioural variation, they may be used in a complementary fashion to understand the evolution of habitat selection behaviour.  相似文献

An optimality model relating the rate of biosynthesis to body temperature and gene duplication is presented to account for several observed patterns of genome size variation. The model predicts (1) that poikilotherms living in a warm climate should have a smaller genome than poikilotherms living in a cold climate, (2) that homeotherms should have a small genome as well as a small variation in genome size relative to their poikilothermic ancestors, (3) that cold geological periods should favor the evolution of poikilotherms with a large genome and that warm geological periods should do the opposite, and (4) that poikilotherms with a small genome should be more sensitive to changes in temperature than poikilotherms with a large genome. The model also offers two explanations for the empirically documented trend that organisms with a large cell volume have larger genomes than those with a small cell volume. Relevant empirical evidence is summarized to support these predictions.   相似文献
