The theory of adaptive polymorphism predicts that species occupying broad ecological niches will be phenotypically and genotypically more varied than those occupying narrow niches. It is suggested that this theory has direct relevance to the epidemiology of microbial pathogens in that environmental pathogens inhabit a broader niche and should be expected to exhibit greater variation than pathogens that are obligate commensals. This proved to be the case when one obligate commensal, the pathogenic yeast Candida albicans, was compared with other Candida spp. and an environmental pathogen, Cryptococcus neoformans. Further evidence of this relationship is derived from the literature. This observation adds further support to the theory of adaptive polymorphism, although the mechanisms of maintenance of polymorphism is asexually reproducing populations must be different from those in sexually reproducing populations. This observation may give important clues to the epidemiology of those infections for which it is not already known.  相似文献

A study of the yeast flora of necrotic oranges and associatedDrosophila yielded a total of 221 isolates composed ofKloeckera apiculata (75),Pichia fermentans (75),Pichia kluyveri (50),Torulopsis stellata (17),Hanseniaspora uvarum (2),P. membranaefaciens (1), andCandida vini (1). The yeast species of all samples of oranges and adultDrosophila were very similar; however, the speciesof Drosophila contained a higher proportion ofP. fermentans and a lower proportion ofK. apiculata than was found in the rotting oranges.P. fermentans was subsequently found more frequently on the surface of the necrotic tissue, where the flies feed, than was found internally. SinceP. fermentans characteristically produces a pellicle and pseudomycelium andK. apiculata does not, it is concluded that the growth characteristics of the yeasts are an important factor determining adultDrosophila diets.  相似文献

Currently, invasive candidal infections represent an increasing cause of morbidity and mortality in seriously ill hospitalised patients. Because the accurate diagnosis of candidiasis remains difficult, a fast and reliable assay for characterization of fungal pathogens is critical for the early initiation of adequate antifungal therapy and/or for introduction of preventive measures. As novel molecular genetic techniques are continuously introduced, their role in the management of infectious diseases has also been growing. Today, molecular strategies complement conventional methods and provide more accurate and detailed insight. It can be expected that future technical development will improve their potential furthermore. In this article, we provide a critical review on the value and limitations of molecular tools in pathogenic Candida species identification and strain typing regarding their sensitivity, discriminatory power, reproducibility, cost and ease of performance.  相似文献

Mixing matrices can be used to describe subgroup interactions in mathematical models which have heterogeneity in population structure. A discussion is presented of two different approaches to the formulation of such mixing matrices. The relation between the two different methods is discussed, using examples based upon models of the transmission dynamics of HIV. There follows a discussion of the application of the mixing matrix approach to other areas in population biology, and a complementary overview of recent advances in theoretical ecology that may have applications in theoretical epidemiology.  相似文献

Interactions between killer yeasts and pathogenic fungi   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Abstract A total of 17 presumptive killer yeast strains were tested in vitro for growth inhibitory and killing activity against a range of fungal pathogens of agronomic, environmental and clinical significance. Several yeasts were identified which displayed significant activity against important pathogenic fungi. For example, isolates of the opportunistic human pathogen, Candida albicans , were generally very sensitive to Williopsis mrakii killer yeast activity, whilst killer strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Pichia anomala markedly inhibited the growth of certain wood decay basidiomycetes and plant pathogenic fungi. Results indicate that such yeasts, together with their killer toxins, may have potential as novel antimycotic biocontrol agents.  相似文献

In an investigation of Amazonian soil as a natural reservoir for pathogenic fungi, 1,949 soil samples collected from diverse geographical and ecological settings of the Brazilian Amazon Basin were analyzed for the presence of non-keratinophilic fungi by the indirect mouse inoculation procedure and for the presence of keratinophilic fungi by the hair bait technique. All soil samples were acidic with low pH values. From 12% of the soil samples, 241 yeast and yeastlike isolates pertaining to six genera and 82 species were recovered, of which 63% were Torulopsis and 26% were Candida species. Nine fungi with known pathogenic potentials were encountered among 43% (104) of the isolates: T. glabrata, C. guilliermondii, C. albicans, C. pseudotropicalis, C. stellatoidea, C. tropicalis, Rhodotorula rubra, and Wangiella dermatitidis. The yeast flora was marked by species diversity, low frequency of each species, random geographical distribution, and an apparent lack of species clustering. The composition and distribution of the yeast flora in soil differed from those of the yeast flora harbored by bats, suggesting that the Amazonian external environment and internal bat organs act as independent natural habitats for yeasts.  相似文献

High sensitivity rates to the activity of killer toxins produced by 25 species of yeasts belonging to the genera Candida, Hansenula, Pichia, Rhodotorula, Saccharomyces and Trichosporon have been observed among 112 yeast isolates (25 Cryptococcus neoformans, 29 C. glabrata, 16 C. parapsilosis, 20 C. pseudotropicalis and 22 C. tropicalis). The highest sensitivity has been observed among the C. parapsilosis isolates, the lowest in C. glabrata strains. Genera Pichia and Hansenula proved to have the greatest killer activity. A killer system, formerly used for differentiating C. albicans isolates within the species, proved to be valid as epidemiological marker when applied to 112 strains of pathogenic yeasts.  相似文献

A recent report by O'Connor et al. demonstrates that planktonic larval duration time declines with temperature, as predicted from metabolic theory. This observation enabled the authors to develop a unified model predicting the effects of temperature on planktonic larval duration and, therefore, dispersal potential in the marine environment. These results show metabolic theory to be a unifying ecological principle that bridges the marine and terrestrial divide, helping to address fundamental problems in marine biodiversity and conservation, as well as to understand the response of marine organisms to climate change.  相似文献

Many pathogenic yeast species are asexual and therefore not involved in intra- or interspecies mating. However, high-frequency transfer of plasmid DNA was observed when pathogenic and food-borne yeasts were grown together. Despite advances in antifungal prophylaxis and therapy, morbidity and mortality incurred by yeasts remain a significant burden. As pathogenic yeast species vary in their susceptibilities to antifungal agents, clinical microbiology laboratories face an important challenge to identify them rapidly and accurately. Although a vast array of phenotyping and genotyping methods has been developed, these are either unable to cover the whole spectrum of potential yeast pathogens or can do this only in a rather costly or laborious way. Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) fingerprinting was repeatedly demonstrated to be a convenient tool for species identification in pathogenic yeasts. However, its wider acceptance has been limited mainly due to special expertise and software needed for analysis and comparison of the resulting banding patterns. Based on a pilot study, we demonstrate here that a simple and rapid melting curve analysis of RAPD products can provide data for identification of five of the most medically important Candida species. We have termed this new approach melting curve of random amplified polymorphic DNA (McRAPD) to emphasize its rapidity and potential for automation, highly desirable features for a routine laboratory test.  相似文献

This paper deals mainly with the conidium ontogenesis and phylogenesis of black yeasts such as E. jeanselmei, E. gougerotii, E. dermatitidis and E. spinifera. The conidium ontogenesis of E. jeanselmei, E. gougerotii and E. dermatitidis was almost the same. One to five annellated tips were observed through a scanning microscope at the apices of conidiogenous cells, which were bottle- or jar-shaped. Annellations on the tips looked like fringes and the conidiogenous cells of these three species were annellides. Annellated projections occurred on hyphae and annelloconidia were also produced from them. Occasionally, secondary annellides occurred from primary ones. They looked like moniliform hyphae. Daughter conidia sometimes budded directly from mother cells. The shapes and sizes of the conidia of these species were very similar to each other. The conidium ontogenesis of E. spinifera was annellidic as well. However, a single annellated tip usually occurred on an annellide. The annellated tips of the fungus were long and more than 20 annellations were observed on their walls. The conidiogenesis of the four species of Exophiala is only annellidic. There were no differences in the biological examinations except KNO3 assimilation among these four species. The growth of E. jeanselmei and E. gougerotii was poor at 37 degrees C. The GC contents of E. jeanselmei 1171, E. gougerotii B-1800, E. dermatitidis MM-7 and E. spinifera DU-3342 were 54.6, 54.6, 56.6 and 59.7%, respectively.  相似文献

Ecological theory often fails applied ecologists in three ways: (1) Theory has little predictive value but is nevertheless applied in conservation with a risk of perverse outcomes, (2) individual theories have limited heuristic value for planning and framing research because they are narrowly focused, and (3) theory can lead to poor communication among scientists and hinder scientific progress through inconsistent use of terms and widespread redundancy. New approaches are therefore needed that improve the distillation, communication, and application of ecological theory. We advocate three approaches to resolve these problems: (1) improve prediction by reviewing theory across case studies to develop contingent theory where possible, (2) plan new research using a checklist of phenomena to avoid the narrow heuristic value of individual theories, and (3) improve communication among scientists by rationalizing theory associated with particular phenomena to purge redundancy and by developing definitions for key terms. We explored the extent to which these problems and solutions have been featured in two case studies of long-term ecological research programs in forests and plantations of southeastern Australia. We found that our main contentions were supported regarding the prediction, planning, and communication limitations of ecological theory. We illustrate how inappropriate application of theory can be overcome or avoided by investment in boundary-spanning actions. The case studies also demonstrate how some of our proposed solutions could work, particularly the use of theory in secondary case studies after developing primary case studies without theory. When properly coordinated and implemented through a widely agreed upon and broadly respected international collaboration, the framework that we present will help to speed the progress of ecological research and lead to better conservation decisions.  相似文献
