The effects of DDT and its metabolites on the reproductive health of two fish species (Clarias gariepinus and Oreochromis mossambicus) were studied using the gonadosomatic index (GSI), gonadal histology and computer assisted sperm analysis (CASA). DDT and its metabolites, DDE and DDD are endocrine disrupting chemicals posing estrogenic and anti‐androgenic properties, which have detrimental effects on growth and reproduction. Although DDT was banned internationally, it is still used for Malaria vector control in areas of South Africa. Both species were sampled at a reference site, Albasini dam (AD), (outside the DDT‐sprayed area, <0.01 μg L?1 of DDT) and at an exposed site, Xikundu weir (XW), in the same river ± 70 km within the DDT‐sprayed area, <0.01 μg L?1 of DDT. Gill nets were used to acquire a sample size of 10 male fish per site for each species. Both testes were dissected out and the GSI calculated. Uncontaminated milt was collected and analyzed using a novel CASA system based on open source software for characterization of sperm motility parameters. Testis tissue sampled for histology was fixed in Bouins and processed according to standard methods. The sample size obtained at the reference site (AD) was O. mossambicus n = 6, C. gariepinus n = 9; and at the exposed site (XW) was O. mossambicus n = 10, C. gariepinus n = 3. The GSI results showed a lower value for O. mossambicus at XW (0.06) (n = 13) than AD (0.12) (n = 6); U = 16.0, P = 0.044. However the opposite was true for C. gariepinus. Exposure to various environmental toxicants can result in gonadal changes such as decreased GSI, morphological alterations or both. Histological assessment showed histopathological alterations to testes tissue including intersex (only in O. mossambicus) and detachment of basal membranes. The CASA results showed a decrease in parameters from the reference site (AD) to the exposed site (XW) for both species. The decrease in percent motility (% MOT) for O. mossambicus from the reference site (AD) (n = 6) to the exposed site (XW) (n = 13) was statistically significant; U = 13.0, P = 0.023. C. gariepinus from the exposed site (XW) was most affected in terms of percent motility (10.00%) and velocity (67.94 μm s?1). Detailed assessment of the environmental effects of DDT in this area seems crucial before population impacts become evident.  相似文献

Synopsis The food and feeding habits of Clarias mossambicus in four habitat types in the northern Lake Victoria basin were studied. The importance of certain food types to this species varies from area to area. In the lake, rivers and swamps, C. mossambicus fed mainly on fish, particularly Haplochromis species. In the sewage ponds, Crustacea and insects were the main food items. The extent of ingestion by C. mossambicus of a given food type presumably reflects the availability and abundance of the food in the habitat. This constitutes a shift in the food habits which is of vital importance in this migratory fish. By employing several feeding methods, i.e. hunting, bottom feeding, surface feeding and filter feeding, C. mossambicus exploits a broad spectrum of food resources in the various habitats. Many modern workers consider Clarias mossambicus conspecific with C. gariepinus and a junior synonym of the latter (Editor)  相似文献

The ability to utilise dietary components differs among fish species. Digestive enzymes may be used to determine the efficiency of the digestive process. In this study, the activities of the digestive enzymes in Tilapia rendalli, Oreochromis mossambicus and Clarias gariepinus were explored. Protease, amylase, lipase and cellulase activities were measured in different parts of the digestive tract of the three fish species. The pH dynamics along the digestive tract were monitored. In all fish species, the presence of food led to a reduction in stomach pH, whereby pH values of 1.54, 1.58 and 2.01 were recorded 12 h after feeding in O. mossambicus, T. rendalli and C. gariepinus, respectively. Protease and amylase activities were significantly higher (P < 0.05, anova ) in the tilapias than in C. gariepinus. The tilapias may be pre‐adapted to produce more protease and amylase to digest plant material, which is more difficult to digest than animal matter. In all species amylase activity was significantly higher in the proximal intestine than in the other parts of the digestive tract (P < 0.05, anova ). The highest protease activity was recorded in the distal intestines. This is because of the alkaline pH recorded in the proximal and distal intestines, which favours amylase and protease activity, respectively. Lipase activities were significantly higher (P > 0.05) in C. gariepinus than in both tilapias. Marginal cellulase activities were recorded in all species. It is inferred here that phylogeny and not diet may be the main factor influencing enzyme activities, as all fish were fed a similar diet.  相似文献

During 2006 to 2008, the water, sediment and fish in Albasini Dam, used as a reference site outside a DDT-sprayed area, had been found to be as affected as those in the nearby DDT-sprayed area were. Accordingly, the aim of the current study, conducted in 2014, was to determine the health status of fish from Albasini Dam by means of a histology-based fish health assessment protocol. High levels of nitrates, as well as the organochlorine pesticides aldrin, dieldrin, chlordane and methoxychlor, were found in the water. Fish muscle tissue contained pesticides, including methoxychlor. A semi-quantitative histological assessment on Clarias gariepinus, Coptodon rendalli and Oreochromis mossambicus showed diverse histopathology in selected target organs, with the gills being most affected. Notably, the testis tissue of one C. rendalli was filled with eosinophilic liquid, characteristic of necrosis. Microscopic intersex was found in two of the nine O. mossambicus sampled. This is the second time that intersex as microscopic testicular oocytes has been reported in O. mossambicus in South Africa. This finding perhaps indicates that reproduction may be compromised and this will be investigated further. The presence of intersex and other histopathology in organs could be early warning signs of the declining water quality in this dam.  相似文献

Tilapiine fish are known to become stunted under different environmental conditions. Of the tilapia, Oreochromis mossambicus (Peters), once considered to be the aquatic chicken, is now treated as a nuisance species in some countries because of its tendency to stunt easily. O. mossambicus is the mainstay of the commercial gillnet fishery in existence in the multitude of reservoirs in Sri Lanka for over 35 years. Published and new evidence on O. mossambicus population traits are presented with a view to evaluating whether the populations in Sri Lankan reservoirs are stunted or not. The main lines of evidence considered are the mean size at maturity (Lm), the proportion of individuals below 20 cm total length in the commercial landings, and growth performance of the individual reservoir populations. Statistically valid inter-relationships exist between the mean length at maturity and the proportion of undersized individuals (below 20 cm) in the landings, and the ratio of the reservoir catchment or watershed area to surface area. Evidence on Lm indicate that there is a tendency for O. mossambicus populations to stunt, however, evidence on growth and mean landing size do not indicate stunting.  相似文献

Three aquatic ecosystems in South Africa, the Hartbeespoort, Klipvoor and Bospoort Dams, are classified as hyper-eutrophic, because of high nutrient loads and chemical pollution. Water and two fish species, Clarias gariepinus and Cyprinus carpio, were collected from these dams to assess the impact of eutrophication and chemical pollutants on their health status. Water and muscle samples were analysed for organic and inorganic chemicals. Condition factor was determined and a necropsy performed to note any macroscopic abnormalities. A histology-based fish health assessment was done on the liver, kidney, gills and gonads. A number of fish from the three dams exhibited livers with fatty change and focal discoloration, skin lesions and parasites within the visceral cavity. The prevalence and severity of histopathology in the liver resulted in higher liver index values than the index values for kidneys and gills. Aluminium, silicon and chromium were detected in the water and muscle tissue. The DDT metabolite p,p’-DDE was present in both species, as well as in fish from the reference site, Marico-Bosveld Dam. Only C. gariepinus from Hartbeespoort Dam had p,p’-DDD levels higher than 5 µg g?1 per edible portion. Water from hyper-eutrophic dams adversely affects the health of freshwater fish.  相似文献

This study describes experimental herbivory and detritivory of three common native aquatic macrophyte species by the introduced Mozambique tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus (Peters) (Pisces: Cichlidae), and its physiological response to their consumption. There was a highly significant effect of fish herbivory on plant weight for each of the macrophyte species, but this effect was not influenced by any preference for periphyton. Despite the herbivory, there was a highly significant loss of fish body weight across all plant species and weight could only be maintained by supplementary feeding of a high protein fish flake. These results suggest that despite eating these plants, an alternative food resource may be needed for survival and may trigger trophic plasticity in O. mossambicus.  相似文献

The stomach contents of eight species of predatory or omnivorous fish caught in gillnets in the Kafue River in May and June 2010 were examined to determine the relative importance, expressed as ‘prominence value’ (PV), of crayfish Cherax quadricarinatus in their diet. Four species, Clarias gariepinus, Schilbe intermedius, Serranochromis robustus and Serranochromis angusticeps, had fed on C. quadricarinatus. The PV of C. quadricarinatus was highest in C. gariepinus, in which the quantity and size of crayfish eaten was significantly correlated with standard length (SL) of fish >200 mm SL. Predated C. quadricarinatus were significantly smaller (mean carapace length [CL] 30 mm; SE 1.2) than those caught in gillnets (mean CL 76 mm; SE 0.9). No C. quadricarinatus remains were found in the stomachs of Oreochromis andersonii, Synodontis macrostigma, Serranochromis macrocephalus or Mormyrus lacerda.  相似文献

Plants and seedlings of Potamogeton pectinatus were obtained from tubers grown under laboratory conditions. Four plants (mean total length: 14.3 m) and two seedlings (mean height: 10.9 cm) were placed in each of twenty 1001 aquaria illuminated with fluorescent lighting. A 5 cm-thick layer of muddy sediment was then put in each aquarium together with two size-matched fish (mean size classes: 6.8, 14.1 and 23.0 g) of the species Cyprinus carpio. After four weeks, the total length of the plants in the control and small fish aquaria had increased by 71% and 3% respectively, whereas plant total length in the aquaria with medium and large fish had diminished by 33% and 76%, respectively. Few seedlings survived in the presence of the fish. The reduction in plant growth was associated with an increase in water turbidity in all treatments as a result of the benthic feeding habit of C. carpio, and of direct herbivory action in the case of medium- and large-sized fish.  相似文献

Tilapia is native to Africa, and one of the most cultivated fish in the world. The goal of this research was to evaluate the genetic diversity of tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus from the Limpopo, Incomati, Umbeluzi and Sabié rivers in Mozambique. Microsatellite markers were used to assess the genetic structure and to compare the genetic variability of wild populations of O. mossambicus. DNA samples from 200 specimens were analyzed. All five loci (UNH104, UNH129, UNH142, UNH222 and UNH231) used in this study were polymorphic, with observed heterozygosity ranging from 0.940 to 1.000 and the allelic richness average (Ar) ranging from 8.937 to 15.751. All of the stocks exhibited a remarkably significant excess of heterozygosity relative to the Hardy‐Weinberg Equilibrium. Evidence of a genetic bottleneck was found in the four populations evaluated herein. The genetic structure of the population was investigated using the analogues FST and DEST. The most genetic variability occurred within populations. Differentiation among populations ranged from low to moderate levels. No significant correlation was found between geographic and genetic distances. Implications of these findings for management and conservation of O. mossambicus stocks are discussed.  相似文献

The stable isotope ratio and seasonal changes in diet of two indigenous (Oreochromis mossambicus, Tilapia rendalli) and one exotic (Oreochromis niloticus) tilapiine cichlids in the subtropical Limpopo River, South Africa were investigated to determine patterns of resource partitioning. Stomach contents of O. niloticus and O. mossambicus indicated high dietary overlap across size class, habitat and season, with both species primarily feeding on vegetative detritus. However, stable isotope analysis revealed that the two Oreochromis species had different stable isotope ratios derived from different food sources. The relatively δ13C-depleted O. niloticus indicates a phytoplankton-based diet, while the δ13C-enriched O. mossambicus indicates a macrophagous diet dominated by vegetative detritus and periphyton. The high similarity in stomach contents and the interspecific differences in isotopic composition reveal fine-scale patterns of food resource partitioning that could be achieved through selective feeding. Tilapia rendalli was largely macrophagous and fed mainly on aquatic macrophytes and had a low dietary overlap with both O. niloticus and O. mossambicus. In the Limpopo River, detritus and algae are probably the most abundant food resources and the causal factors responsible for the observed patterns of resource partitioning among the tilapiines are usually difficult to ascertain. Fish may be able to perceive food resources in terms of the dynamics that determine their availability. Detailed studies of variation in food resource availability and fish habitat use within the system are needed to evaluate this hypothesis.  相似文献

Observations made over a three-year period at the Fish Diseases Laboratory of the African Regional Aquaculture Centre (ARAC), Nigeria, revealed the gradual emergence of a new, highly infectious septicaemic condition in some widely cultivated freshwater fish species. The broad host range included: Heterobanchus bidorsalis, Clarias gariepinus, “Heteroclarias” (a hybrid of these two species, male and female respectively), Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus, and Cyprinus carpio. Clinical signs and pathological lesions associated with the condition were tyical, irrespective of the fish species affected; natural outbreaks apeared to be associated with stress due to environmental factors. The bacterium isolated from moribund and freshly-dead fishes was identified as a Bacillus sp., based on the observed cultural, morphological and biochemical characteristics. Fish reinfection trials confirmed that the isolate was the causative agent of the condition. Antibiotic sensitivity tests showed that the organism was sensitive to tetracycline hydrochloride.  相似文献

Cyprinid fish of different mature age classes (3+ -4+) and stocks (100, 300 and 500 kg/ha) were introduced into each of three experimental ponds with area of 0.3 ha (average depth ca 1.7 m) while the fourth pond was left free of fish. Bream (Abramis brama L.), white bream (Blicca bjoerkna L.) and roach (Rutilus rutilus L.) made up 75% of the total cyprinid biomass, with wild carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) as the remaining 25%. The introduced fish spawned successfully. The high (above 300 kg/ha) planktivorous and benthivorous fish stocks resulted in several qualitative and quantitative alterations of the food chain structure in our simulation pond experiments. These alterations must primarily be assigned to changes caused by both the zooplanktivory and benthivory nature of the stocked fish populations. At the higher levels of fish biomass, Secchi depth was influenced significantly by chlorophyll-a concentration. Most of the variance in suspended solids concentration could be explained by the biomass ratio of the mature benthivorous fish. There was a clear shift in algal cell size in the ponds with the higher fish stocks: ponds with more fish had larger cells later in the summer. The relative influence of young cyprinid fish on crustaceans species composition and biomass, and mature populations on benthic fauna abundance and biomass, was sufficiently greater at higher (300–500 kg/ha) fish stock rates.  相似文献

The Salton Sea is a highly saline lake that has long supported sportfishery and large populations of fish-eating birds. A study was initiated in 1999 to assess the status of orangemouth corvina (Cynoscion xanthulus), bairdiella (Bairdiella icistia) and tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus × O. urolepis). Multimesh (50 × 2 m) gillnets were set at nine stations in 1999, ten stations in 2000 and six stations in 2002. These stations were sampled every two months in 1999, every three months in 2000 and once in 2002. O. mossambicus was the most abundant of the four species, with a maximum mean catch per unit effort (CPUE) 13.8 kg net−1 h−1 or 29.9 fish net−1 h−1 being observed at the river mouth stations in August 1999. From spring to summer, tilapia CPUE increased at nearshore and river mouth stations and decreased at pelagic stations, apparently reflecting migration away from midlake areas in response to anoxia or hypoxia caused by periodic springtime overturn events in deep waters. Tilapia catches in nearshore, river mouth and pelagic habitats were 83 and 60% males in 1999 and 2000, respectively. Tilapia catches in rivers in August 1999 averaged only 6% male. During 1999–2000, the tilapia population consisted essentially of only the 1995 and 2000 year classes. Harsh conditions at the Salton Sea have led to erratic reproduction and survival rates and unstable age structures for its resident fishes. Massive parasite infestations of fry and physiological stressors such as anoxia, high sulfide levels, high salinity and high and low temperatures are potential causes of the irregular recruitment and periodic dieoffs of tilapia. The abundance of all fish species declined over the years of study. Between 1999 and 2002, the late summer mean CPUEs for tilapia, bairdiella and orangemouth corvina at four nearshore stations dropped from 16 fish to 0.02 fish, from 4.7 fish net to 0.23 fish, and from 0.08 fish to 0.02 fish, respectively. During 2000–2003, parallel declines occurred in estimated numbers of adult fish involved in mass mortality events at the Sea. The boom-and-bust dynamics of tilapia and other fish populations in the Sea have major consequences for fish-eating bird populations, for other components of the ecosystem, and for the recreational value of the lake. A total of 298 fish specimens belonging to seven families were caught during ichthyoplanktonic survey of three rivers within the Ewekoro cement facility catchment area located in southwestern Nigeria. The highest numbers of specimens were caught from Alaguntan (37.0%) and Elebute (36.6%) rivers while 28.9% of the fish samples were collected from Itori River. The fish population and species diversity recorded in the catchment rivers were significantly lower (p < 0.05) than comparative catches from Ewekoro River located about 30 km downstream of the factory operational area. The food items ingested by the specimens across the seasons in the catchment rivers revealed obvious differences in diet with some degree of overlap in the fish trophic preferences. However, the omnivorous species dominated the catches in each of the rivers, irrespective of season. Categorization of the fish specimens based on habitat-related adaptive physiology showed that a significant number of the fish from Alaguntan and Itori Rivers have accessory respiratory organs. The four species with accessory respiratory organs were Polypterus senegalus Curv., Clarias gariepinus C. & V., Ctenopoma kingslayae Gun. and Channa obscura Smith. Of the 12 fish species recorded in the Ewekoro cement facility catchment rivers, only P. senegalus, C. gariepinus, C. obscura and Oreochromis niloticus (Trew.) are valuable food fishes in southwestern Nigeria.  相似文献

Synopsis Survival and competitive ability of juvenile fish is often dependent on their growth rate. Temperature is the physical component of their environment which most affects growth rate. To determine the effect of temperature on the growth rate of two exotic warm water species we measured growth of Oreochromis mossambicus and Sarotherodon melanotheron at 25, 30 and 35°C. There was a significant interaction of species and temperature on growth. The growth rate of O. mossambicus was faster than that of S. melanotheron at 25 and 30°C but slower at 35°C. Weight gain of S. melanotheron was significantly greater at 30°C than at 25°C. Weight gain of O. mossambicus at 25 and 30°C was significantly greater than at 35°C. Temperature had no effect on the weight-length relationship of either species.Scientific Series No. 1546-AEL from UM-CEES, Appalachian Environmental Laboratory  相似文献

The concentrations of selected hydroxylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OH-PAHs) were determined in the bile of the African sharptooth catfish Clarias gariepinus from impoundments in the urban impacted Klip River system in Soweto, South Africa. Fish were sampled from three impoundments (Lenasia, Fleurhof, and Orlando dams) during the early high-flow season (September/October) of 2013. Biliary OH-PAHs were analysed using a high-pressure liquid chromatograph coupled to a tandem mass spectrometer (HPLC-MS/MS). Seven of the thirteen targeted metabolites were present in the fish of Soweto. The ΣOH-PAHs ranged between 0.1 and 1 876 ng ml?1, with greatest ΣOH-PAH mean at Orlando (947 ng ml?1) followed by Fleurhof (371 ng ml?1). The most dominant metabolite in the sampling area was 2–,3–OH fluorene, ranging between not detected and 1 429 ng ml?1, with the greatest mean at Orlando (709 ng ml?1). PAH metabolites quantified in C. gariepinus most likely originated from the sediments. The hepatosomatic index of the C. gariepinus increased proportionally with the biliary OH-PAH concentrations. To the authors’ knowledge this data on biliary OH-PAH for fish is the first for South Africa.  相似文献

Habitat suitability indices indicate how fish species respond to different habitat types. We assessed effects of habitat characteristics on fish distribution in an equatorial lake, Lake Naivasha, Kenya, where habitats vary according to substrate, depth and turbidity. Using monthly data between 2008 and 2010 using multi-mesh gill nets, catch per unit effort was used as a relative abundance measure to identify how habitat variables drive fish distribution. The focus was on commercial fishes: two introduced species (Cyprinus carpio and Micropterus salmoides) and two naturalised species (Oreochromis leucostictus and Tilapia zillii). Analyses revealed distinct preferences for different habitat variables by all commercial species except for C. carpio. For example, O. leucostictus preferred shallow waters with silt–clay substrates whilst M. salmoides preferred deeper waters with sandy/rocky substrates. Conversely, C. carpio showed no specialised habitat requirements. Niche overlaps were significantly lower between O. leucostictus and its respective sympatric species than between other species, a likely result of its territorial behaviour. The continued environmental degradation of Lake Naivasha may imperil the preferred habitats of the niche restricted M. salmoides, O. leucostictus and T. zillii. By contrast, the ubiquity of C. carpio may facilitate their invasion, and consequently sustain their dominance in the lake’s commercial fishery.  相似文献

A histology-based fish health assessment protocol was used in 2009–2010 to assess the health status of Clarias gariepinus from Pongolapoort Dam, South Africa. Nineteen fish were collected by angling. The histology of liver, kidney, gills and testes or ovaries was semi-quantitatively assessed and compared to that of fish from a reference site in the Okavango Panhandle, Botswana. Necropsy observations indicated that C. gariepinus from Pongolapoort Dam were in poorer condition than those from the Okavango Panhandle. Microscopic analysis showed that the mean liver index (I L), gill index (I G), testis index (I T) and ovary index (I O) were higher, although not statistically significant, in fish from the Okavango Panhandle. The difference in the results between the necropsy-based observations and semi-quantitative histological results was due to the external abnormalities detected in the necropsy analysis, including parasites and skin lesions, not expressing as changes to cell and tissue structure. According to the parameters measured, C. gariepinus from Pongolapoort Dam were in a healthy state.  相似文献
