The Responses of Field-grown Sunflower and Maize to Mechanical Support   总被引:4,自引:1,他引:4
The effects of mechanical support on two contrasting speciesof herbaceous annual, the dicot sunflower (Helianthus annuusL.) and the monocot maize (Zea mays L.), were investigated bycomparing the growth and mechanical properties of supportedplants and those which were left to sway freely in the wind. Providing support had its greatest effect on the more highly-stressedbasal areas of the plants, such as the lower stem and the baseof the lateral roots. The diameter of the stem bases of bothspecies was approx. 10% lower in supported plants, but therewas no difference between treatments in the diameter of thestem above 50 cm. Roots of both species also showed a reductionin rigidity and bending strength of 40–50% in the supportedplants compared with freely swaying plants. There was a significantreduction in the partitioning of biomass to the root systemsof supported plants of both species. There were differences in the way in which sunflower and maizeresponded to the provision of support; in sunflower, the reductionin lateral diameter was about twice that in maize, whereas inmaize the decrease in the number of first-order laterals wastwice that of sunflower. This study suggests that thigmomorphogenesismay be a localized response, but that different species canrespond in different ways to mechanical stimulation. Etiolated seedlings of Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) weresubjected to mechanical stress by longitudinally compressingthe hypocotyl with approx. 0·05 N force (equivalent to0·025 MPa for a 1·6 mm diameter hypocotyl). Thisrelatively low compressive stress effected an increase in relativegrowth rates (RGR) of the hypocotyl for a period of 1-2 h, followingwhich RGR returned to the pretreatment rate. RGR was also increasedby an equivalent compressive stress treatment (0·025MPa) for 4 h in water or in 10-10 mol l-1 IAA. These resultsare discussed in the context of a possible role for mechanicallyinduced stress in the initiation and maintenance of nutationalgrowth movements.Copyright 1994, 1999 Academic Press Helianthus annuus, Sunflower, hypocotyl growth, mechanical stress, seedling growth, nutational growth movements, circumnutation  相似文献

The effects of phosphate concentration on plant growth and photosyntheticprocesses in primary leaves of young sunflower (Helianthus annuusL.) plants were examined. Plants were grown for 3 weeks on half-strengthHoagland's solution containing 0, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, and 3.0 molm–3 orthophosphate (Pi). It was shown that optimal photosynthesisand the highest light utilization capacity were achieved at0.5 mol m–3 Pi in the growth medium, which was in goodagreement with the maximum content of organic phosphorus inthe leaves. Low phosphate in the medium inhibited plant growthrate. Phosphate deficiency appreciably decreased photosyntheticoxygen evolution by leaves, the efficiency of photosystem two(PSII) photochemistry and quantum efficiency of PSII electrontransport. High oxidation state of PSII primary electron acceptorQA, at 0.1 mol m–3 Pi, however, indicates that photosyntheticelectron transport through PSII did not limit photosynthesisin Pi-deficient leaves. The results indicate that diminishedphotosynthesis under sub- and supra-optimal Pi was caused mainlyby a reduced efficiency of ribulose 1, 5-bisphosphate (RuBP)regeneration at high light intensities. These results suggestthat, under non-limiting C02 and irradiance, photosynthesisof the first pair of leaves could be diminished by both sub-and supra-optimal phosphorus nutrition of sunflower plants. Stem from three- and four-week-old Soyabean [Glycine max (L.)Merr. cv. Tracy] plants reduced from 0.3 to 0.7 µmol nitrateh–l g–l f. wt. Leaf activity was 4.7–7.6 µmolnitrate h–l g–l f. wt. Outer stem was two to fourtimes more active at reducing nitrate than was inner stem. Plantnitrate nutrition had a strong effect upon the ratio of activitypresent in stem and leaf. More nitrate increased the proportionpresent in leaves. Glycine max L., soyabean, nitrate assimilation, nitrogen metabolism, Rhizobium japonicum  相似文献

The absorption and distribution of Cu in red clover (Trifoliumpratense L.) were measured in plants grown in flowing solutionculture with Cu maintained throughout at 0.5 µg 1–1and N supplied either as nitrate or through symbiotic fixation.Although there was a decrease in Cu absorption, both with time, and with a depleted nitrate supply, it increased to its formerrate when nitrate was adjusted to 10 mg N 1–1 after aperiod of depletion. Differences in absorption between plantsdependent upon fixation and those supplied with nitrate wererelated to the slower initial growth of the plants fixing N.Considerable proportions (> 30 per cent) of the absorbedCu were retained by the roots. At the final harvest, and withthe exception of plants grown with nitrate adjusted to 0.1 mgN 1–1 after a period of depletion, the proportion of theCu retained was related to the concentration of N in the roots. The different N treatments produced differences in Cu concentrationin the shoots, and the effects were greater in the youngestfully expanded leaves than in older leaves. Plants of Phaseolus vulgaris grown at 7 and 28 W m–2 showedno differences in rate of development of leaves or flowers. At 7 W m-Z plants had longer internodes, more succulent stemsand leaves, higher ratios of shoot:root and greater leaf areasthat those at 28 W m–2. These differences were establishedprior to detectable differences in photosynthesis and couldpartly be attributed to an increased proportion of far-red light. Although the final d. wt, carbon content, and fruit yield werehigher at 28 W m–2, plants at 7 W m–2 apparentlyhad similar relative growth rates and greater photosyntheticefficiency. Dry weight differences are most easily interpretedas resulting from the establishment of an earlier net carbongain at 28 W m–2 than at 7 W m–2.  相似文献

Simulated mixed swards of Perennial Ryegrass (Lolium perenneL.) cv. S23 and White clover (Trifolium repens L.) cv. S100were grown from seed under a constant 20 °C day/15 °Cnight temperature regime and their growth and carbon economyexamined. The swards received a nutrient solution daily, whichcontained either High (220 mg l1) or Low (10 mg l–1)nitrate N. Rates of canopy photosynthesis and respiration, and final drymatter yields were similar in the two treatments although theproportions of grass and clover differed greatly. The Low-Nswards were made up largely of clover. The grass plants in theseswards had high root: shoot ratios and low relative photosyntheticrates – both signs of N deficiency – and were clearlyunable to compete with the vigorously growing Low-N clover plants. These had higher relative growth rates and dry matter yieldsthan their High-N counterparts. In the High-N swards clovercontributed around 50 per cent to the sward dry weight throughoutthe measurement period despite having a smaller proportion ofits dry weight in photosynthetic tissue (laminae) than grassover much of it. The latter was compensated for, initially bya higher specific leaf area than grass, and later by a higherphotosynthetic rate per unit leaf weight. The results are discussedin relation to observed declines in the clover content of swardsafter the addition of nitrogen fertilizer in the field. The growth of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) in conditionstypical of April in Southern England (8 °C day/4 °Cnight, 12 h photoperiod of 90 J m–2 s–1 visibleradiation) was extremely slow, whether the plants were dependentfor nitrogen on fixation by their root nodules or were suppliedwith abundant nitrate; although growth was slower in the nodulatedplants. The reasons for slow growth were a large root: shootratio and a small leaf area, particularly in the nodulated plants, and a low photosynthetic rate in all plants. The probable effectsof these characteristics on the growth of white clover withgrasses in mixed pastures are discussed. Distribution of Nitrogen during Growth of Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The accumulation, distribution and redistribution of dry matterand nitrogen is described for Helianthus annuus L. cv. Hysun21 grown on 6 mM urea in glasshouse culture. Seed dry matterand nitrogen were transferred to seedlings with net efficienciesof 40 and 86 per cent respectively. At flowering, the stem hadmost of the plant's dry matter and the leaves most of its nitrogen.About 35 per cent of the plant's nitrogen accumulated afterthree-row anthesis. The amount of protein in vegetative parts, especially leaves, declined after flowering. Concentrationsof free amino compounds also decreased during growth. Matureseeds had 38 per cent of the total plant dry weight and 68 percent of the total nitrogen. Seeds acquired 33 per cent of theirdry matter and nitrogen from redistribution from above-groundplant parts. The stem was most important for storage of carbohydrate, leaves the most important for nitrogen. Over 50 per cent ofthe nitrogen in the stem and leaves was redistributed. Plantsthat received 6 mM nitrate accumulated more dry matter thanurea-grown plants. Seeds from nitrate-grown plants were heavier(58 mg) than those of urea-grown plants (46 mg), and their percentageoil was greater (50 and 41 respectively). The amount of nitrogenper seed was the same. Little or no urea was detected in xylem sap of plants suppliedwith 5 mM urea, but it was detected in sap of plants which received25 mM. Concentrations of urea and amino compounds in the sapdecreased up the stem. Plants supplied with nitrate had mostof the nitrogen in xylem sap as NO2, suggesting littlenitrate reduction in roots. Plants grown on 6 mM nitrate andchanged to high levels of urea-nitrogen for 14 days still hadhigh levels of nitrate; little nitrate remained in plants receivinglow levels of urea. When urea is applied in irrigation waterto field-grown sunflower, the nitrogen is subsequently takenup as nitrate due to rapid nitrogen transformations in the soil. Forage maize (Zea mays L.) was grown in monocultures at populationdensities ranging from 4·9 to 11·1 plants m–2.Data for plant growth analysis were obtained from six harvestscarried out from 21 to 115 d after planting. Conventional plantgrowth analysis indicated that improvements in forage productivityper unit land area by high population density resulted directlyfrom increased plant presence. Reduction in dry weight per shootat high population density was associated with reduced unitleaf rate. Leaf area ratio was little affected, which may implythat competition for soil nutrients or oxygen was the chiefcause of plant interference. Yield component analysis demonstratedthe increasing importance of population density treatments asa source of variation as growth progressed. Direct relationshipsbetween variation in yield per plant and variation in two yieldcomponents, stem diameter and the inverse of leaf area ratio, were demonstrated. Both conventional plant growth analysis andyield component analysis indicated complex physiological andmorphological adjustments to species population density. The ability of Betula pubescens seedlings to acclimate to arange of quantum flux densities is examined, paying particularattention to the quantity, rate and type of wood produced. Betulapubescens seedlings were germinated and grown for 2 months ata quantum flux density of 440 µmol m–2 s–1,then transferred to 440, 244 or 89 µmol m–2 s–1. Seedlings transferred to reduced fluence rates were able tosurvive and grow. Acclimation was associated with an increasedallocation of carbon to stem elongation and leaf-area production, this occurred at the expense of root storage carbohydrate androot growth. The rate of wood production was shown to be directlyrelated to quantum flux density. Stem wood structure at smallquantum flux density showed an increase in proportion of fibres, while root wood structure in this regime showed a greater proportionof vessels. In general the activity of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase(PAL) showed little significant difference between treatments. The implications of these changes in wood structure are discussedand related to wood production and PAL activity. Seismic Stress Responses of Soybean to Different Photosynthetic Photon Flux   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Physical agitation applied as periodic seismic stress (shaking)reduced stem clongation, leaf expansion, and biomass accumulationby vegetative soybeans. Level of photon flux (PPF) influencedthe type and extent of plant response to mechanical stress.Plant parts responded differently as PPF varied between 135and 592 µmol m–2 S–1. Stem length was significantlyreduced by seismic stress at 135 µmol m–2 s–1but this effect was insignificant at higher PPFs. Reduced stemlength resulted from an inhibition of internode elongation.Stem diameter was unaffected by stress at the PPFs tested. Incontrast to effects on stem elongation, leaf area was insensitiveto stress treatments at 135 µmol m–2 S–1 butwas progressively inhibited by stress as PPF increased. Statisticallysignificant reductions in shoot f. wt and d. wt by seismic stressoccurred only at 295 µmol m–2 S–1. Root biomassaccumulation was not affected by seismic stress at any PPF usedin this study. Glycine max (L.) Merr. cv. Although it is well established that the root growth in manyspecies is very sensitive to mechanical impedance or to confinementin small volumes, little is known about the consequent effectson growth of the whole plant and the mechanisms involved. Thiswork investigated the effects of root confinement on the waterrelations, growth and assimilate partitioning of tomato (Lycopersiconesculentum Mill) grown in solution culture. Six-week old plants were transferred to either 4500 ml or 75ml containers filled with nutrient solution, and allowed togrow for 14 d. Transpiration, leaf-air temperature differences, and leaf diffusive resistances were measured frequently. Leaf, stem and shoot dry masses, leaf area and root length, were estimatedwhen the treatments were imposed and at the end of the experiment. After 14 d growth the root and shoot hydraulic resistances wereestimated from measurements of leaf water potential and transpirationrate, using a steady-state technique. Confining root growth to the small containers substantiallyreduced shoot and root growth and increased the proportion oftotal dry matter present in the stems. These effects were dueto drought stress. The hydraulic resistance of the root systemwas greatest in the confined plants. This led to more negativeleaf water potentials, increased leaf diffusive resistance, and reduced the net assimilation rate by a factor of 2.5. Transpirationper unit leaf area was less affected. However, cumulative transpirationwas also reduced by a factor of 2.5. mostly because of the smallerleaf area on the confined plants. Root hydraulic resistivitywas measured at 3.1 x 1012s m–1 in the control treatment, but increased to 3.9 x 1012 s m–1 for roots in the smallcontainer. The mechanisms by which root confinement caused drought stressand disrupted the pattern of assimilate partitioning are discussedin detail. The growth of lucerne var. Europe was examined in the fieldduring 1976. The annual dry matter production of unirrigatedlucerne during 1976, with no nitrogen fertilizer application, was 82.5 per cent greater than unirrigated S.24 perennial ryegrass, with a nitrogen application of 384 kg ha–1. The mean aboveground growth rate of lucerne was 7.3 g DM m–2 day–1between March and early June, of which stem material contributeda maximum of 76.5 per cent. Significant losses of leaves andstems occurred from the end of April, indicating a loss of potentialforage material. Nitrogen analyses of the above ground crop suggested that in56 days lucerne yielded 10.7 per cent more nitrogen than didS.24 annually with a nitrogen fertilizer addition of 280 kgha–1. Between 13 and 57 per cent of the daily photosynthate is translocatedbelow ground. Medicago sativaL, lucerne, dry matter production, canopy structure, nitrogen analyses  相似文献

Barley (Hordeum vulgare L., cvs Golf, Mette, and Laevigatum)was grown under nitrogen limitation in solution culture untilnear maturity. Three different nitrogen addition regimes wereused: in the ‘HN’ culture the relative rate of nitrate-Naddition (RA) was 0·08 d–1 until day 48 and thendecreased stepwise to, finally, 0·005 d–1 duringgrain-filling; the ‘LN’ culture received 45% ofthe nitrogen added in HN; the ‘CN’ culture was maintainedat RA 0·0375 d–1 throughout. Kinetics of net nitrateuptake were measured during ontogeny at 30 to 150 mmol m–3external nitrate. Vmax (which is argued to reflect the maximuminflux rate in these plants) declined with age in both HN andLN cultures. A pronounced transient drop was observed just beforeanthesis, which correlated in time with a peak in root nitrateconcentration. Similar, but less pronounced, trends were observedin CN. The relative Vmax (unit nitrogen taken up per unit nitrogenin plants and day) in all three cultures declined from 1·3–2·3d–1 during vegetative growth to 0·1–0·7d–1 during generative growth. These values are in HN andLN cultures 15- to more than 100-fold in excess of the demandset by growth rates throughout ontogeny. Predicted balancingnitrate concentrations (defined as the nitrate concentrationrequired to support the observed rate of growth) were below6·0 mmol m–3 in HN and LN cultures before anthesisand then decreased during ontogeny. In CN cultures the balancingnitrate concentration increased during grain-filling. Apartfrom the transient decline during anthesis, most of the effectof ageing on relative Vmax can be explained in terms of reducedcontribution of roots to total biomass (R:T). The loss in uptakeper unit root weight is largely compensated for by the declinewith time in average tissue nitrogen concentrations. The quantitativerelationships between relative Vmax and R:T in ageing plantsare similar to those observed for vegetative plants culturedat different RAs. The data support the contention that the capacity for nitrateacquisition in N-limited plants is under general growth control, rather than controlled by specific regulation of the biochemicalpathway of nitrate assimilation. The effects of different applied NO3 concentrations onextension growth and final length and area of leaves 1–4of five cereals and six pasture grasses of temperate originwere examined. Increased applied NO3 in the range 0.1–0.5.0mol m–3 caused decreased duration of growth but increasedgrowth rate and final length of leaves 2–4 of the cerealsAvena saliva, Hordeum vulgare, Secale cereale, x Triticosecaleand Triticum aestivum. For all cereals, increased NO3resulted in increased area of leaves 1–4. Pasture grasseswere supplied either 0.5 or 50 mol m–3 NO3. Increasedapplied NO3 (0.5–5.0 mol m–3) resulted indecreased duration of growth and increased growth rate and finalarea of leaves 1–4 of Bromus wiltdenowii, leaves 2–4ofFestuca arundinaceae and leaves 3 and 4 of Lolium muitiflorum. In addition, length of leaves 3 and 4 of B. witidenowii increasedwith increased NO3. Increased NO3 resulted inincreased area of leaves 2–4 of Dactylis gtomerata andLolium perenne and leaves 3 and 4 of Phalaris aquaiica but hadno effect on extension growth of all three species. Low temperature (6 C) growth was examined in two cultivarsof Vicia faba L. supplied with 4 and 20 mol m–3 N as nitrateor urea. Both cultivars showed similar growth responses to increasedapplied-N concentration regardless of N-form. Total leaf areaincreased, as did root, stem and leaf dry weight, total carboncontent and total nitrogen content. In contrast to findingsat higher growth temperatures, 20 mol m–3 urea-N gavesubstantially greater growth (all parameters measured) than20 mol m–3 nitrate-N. The increased carbon content per plant associated with increasedapplied nitrate or urea concentration, or with urea in comparisonto nitrate, was due to a greater leaf area per plant for CO2uptake and not an increased CO2, uptake per unit area, carbon, chlorophyll or dry weight, all of which either remained constantor decreased. Nitrate reductase activity was substantial inplants given nitrate but negligible in plants given urea. Neitherfree nitrate nor free urea contributed greatly to nitrogen levelsin plant tissues. It is concluded that there is no evidence for a restrictionin nitrate reduction at 6 C, and it is likely that urea givesgreater growth than nitrate because of greater rates of uptake. The effects of various levels of copper on the uptake and distributionof copper in Chrysanthemum morifolium grown in solution cultureand peat-sand have been examined. Whole plants growing in shortdays were sampled at regular intervals, divided into roots, stem, leaves and lateral shoots, and analysed for copper. Thepartitioning of copper between these tissues showed that a relativelylarge proportion (30–40 per cent) of the total plant copperwas accumulated in the roots of normal plants during the harvestingperiod, compared with approximately 10 per cent in the rootsof copper deficient plants. Whilst the copper content (ug g–1) of leaves and stemfrom normal plants was negatively correlated with the amountof dry matter produced (P < 0·001), the correspondingcopper deficient tissues showed little variation in copper contentwith increases in tissue dry weight. A more detailed investigationof the copper content of leaves from normal plants showed thatgradients existed within the plant with respect to both leafposition and time of harvest which could be described by a singlecubic surface equation (P < 0·001).  相似文献

The relative importance of explant type, genotype and growthregulator regime in the determination of shoot regenerationfrequencies from complex explants of Brassica napus L. has beenevaluated. Cotyledon, hypocotyl and stem sections taken fromone spring (Westar) and three winter (Ariana, Cobra, Libravo)varieties of B. napus were cultured on three different growthregulator regimes, 0.5 mg dm–3 NAA + 2.0mg dm–3BAP, 0.5 mg dm–3 NAA + 4.0mg dm–3 BAP and 1.0mgdm–3 NAA + 4.0mg dm–3 BAP. The most significanteffects on shoot regeneration were due to explant type and variety. The regeneration from stem segments was not only two to threetimes higher than from hypocotyls or cotyledons, in all varieties, but the response was also more uniform across the varieties. The explant effect accounted for 44–95% of the regenerationresponse. In contrast, the contribution of growth regulatorregime was negligible. Although the growth regulator regimeas an independent effect was unimportant, regeneration fromboth Ariana and Libravo was significantly affected by the interactionof genotype with growth regulator regime. The importance ofboth the high shoot regeneration frequency from stem segmentsand the relative uniformity of response across the four testedgenotypes is discussed with respect to the potential benefitsof using this explant source in Agrobacterium-based transformationexperiments. Maize (Zea mays L.) and sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) plantswere grown in large volumes of soil and leaf growth rate wasmonitored on a daily basis. Half the plants were given a soildrying treatment and when they showed a significant restrictionof growth rate (compared to both their daily growth rate beforedrying and the average growth rate of well-watered plants onthe same day), leaf water relations were measured and xylemsap was extracted using several techniques. There was a significant negative log-linear relationship betweenthe rate of leaf growth and the concentration of ABA in thexylem for both species. There was no clear relationship betweenleaf growth rate and leaf water potential or turgor for eitherspecies. Assessment of different methods for sampling xylemsap suggests that exudates collected from stem stumps or samplescollected by pressurizing the whole root system are suitablefor estimating ABA concentration in xylem, at least with largeplants of maize or sunflower, provided the first few hundredcubic millimetres of collected sap are used for the assay. Centrifugationof sections of stems resulted in dilution of ABA in the xylemsap with sap squeezed from parenchyma tissue. This is because,at least in plants subjected to mild soil drying, the concentrationof the ABA in the xylem is far higher than that in the cellsap of stem tissue. Results support the proposal that ABA plays a major role asa chemical signal involved in the root-to-shoot communicationof the effects of soil drying. The non-hydraulic restrictionof leaf growth by a chemical signal can be explained by theextra root-sourced ABA in the xylem and may be an importantcomponent of the modification of growth and development whichresults from prolonged soil drought.
