Background

Observers respond more accurately to targets in visual search tasks that share properties with previously presented items, and transient attention can learn featural consistencies on a precue, irrespective of its absolute location.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We investigated whether such attentional benefits also apply to temporal consistencies. Would performance on a precued Vernier acuity discrimination task, followed by a mask, improve if the cue-lead times (CLTs; 50, 100, 150 or 200 ms) remained constant between trials compared to when they changed? The results showed that if CLTs remained constant for a few trials in a row, Vernier acuity performance gradually improved while changes in CLT from one trial to the next led to worse than average discrimination performance. The results show that transient attention can quickly adjust to temporal regularities, similarly to spatial and featural regularities. Further experiments show that this form of learning is not under voluntary control.

Conclusions/Significance

The results add to a growing literature showing how consistency in visual presentation improves visual performance, in this case temporal consistency.  相似文献

The equations governing the time course of the exchange of substances between the blood in the capillaries and the extracellular space are solved for the case of substances which do not penetrate the cells. The equations given relate the time course of the exchange process to the various tissue and circulation parameters such as the specific capillary wall area, the pore area, the inter-capillary distance, the size of the extra-vascular, extra-cellular space, the diffusion coefficient in this space, and the velocity of blood in the capillaries. Some experimental work on capillary exchange is discussed in relation to the theory and estimates are made of the relative importance of the various tissue and circulation parameters in the exchange of substances in different tissues.  相似文献

Bundles of 10-100 fibers were dissected from the extensor digitorum longus muscle of mouse, mounted in an apparatus for optical recording, and stretched to long sarcomere length (> or = 3.6 microns). One fiber within the bundle was microinjected with furaptra, a fluorescent indicator that responds rapidly to changes in myoplasmic free [Ca2+] (delta [Ca2+]). Twitches and brief tetani were initiated by external stimulation. At myoplasmic furaptra concentrations of approximately 0.1 mM, the indicator's fluorescence signal during fiber activity (delta F/F) was well resolved. delta F/F was converted to delta [Ca2+] under the assumption that furaptra's myoplasmic dissociation constant for Ca2+ is 98 microM at 16 degrees C and 109 microM at 28 degrees C. At 16 degrees C, the peak amplitude of delta [Ca2+] during a twitch was 17.8 +/- 0.4 microM (+/-SEM; n = 8) and the half-width of delta [Ca2+] was 4.6 +/- 0.3 ms. At 28 degrees C, the peak and half-width values were 22.1 +/- 1.8 microM and 2.0 +/- 0.1 ms, respectively (n = 4). During a brief high-frequency tetanus, individual peaks of delta [Ca2+] were also well resolved and reached approximately the same amplitude that resulted from a single shock; the initial decays of delta [Ca2+] from peak slowed substantially during the tetanus. For a single twitch at 16 degrees C, the amplitude of delta [Ca2+] in fast-twitch fibers of mouse is not significantly different from that recently measured in fast- twitch fibers of frog (16.5 +/- 0.9 microM; Zhao, M., S. Hollingworth, and S.M. Baylor. 1996. Biophys. J. 70:896-916); in contrast, the half- width of delta [Ca2+] is surprisingly brief in mouse fibers, only about half that measured in frog (9.6 +/- 0.6 ms). The estimated peak rate at which Ca2+ is released from the sarcoplasmic reticulum in response to an action potential is also similar in mouse and frog, 140-150 microM/ms (16 degrees C).  相似文献

The transient properties of balancing selection in large, but finite, populations are described by means of an asymptotic analysis. Heterotic selection is shown to retard the rate of loss of genetic variation while random environment selection is shown to retard the rate of loss of variation when the initial variant is a rare mutant. Otherwise random environment selection can speed up the loss of variation for certain parametric cases. The asymptotic analysis leads to a particularly simple conceptualization of the selection process which allows the computation of asymptotic forms of the dominant eigenvalue of the process.  相似文献

Time course studies with microarray techniques and experimental replicates are very useful in biomedical research. We present, in replicate experiments, an alternative approach to select and cluster genes according to a new measure for association between genes. First, the procedure normalizes and standardizes the expression profile of each gene, and then, identifies scaling parameters that will further minimize the distance between replicates of the same gene. Then, the procedure filters out genes with a flat profile, detects differences between replicates, and separates genes without significant differences from the rest. For this last group of genes, we define a mean profile for each gene and use it to compute the distance between two genes. Next, a hierarchical clustering procedure is proposed, a statistic is computed for each cluster to determine its compactness, and the total number of classes is determined. For the rest of the genes, those with significant differences between replicates, the procedure detects where the differences between replicates lie, and assigns each gene to the best fitting previously identified profile or defines a new profile. We illustrate this new procedure using simulated data and a representative data set arising from a microarray experiment with replication, and report interesting results.  相似文献

Selection gradient analysis examines the strength and direction of phenotypic selection as well as the curvature of fitness functions, allowing predictions on and insights into the process of evolution in natural populations. However, traditional linear and quadratic selection analyses are not capable of detecting other features of fitness functions, such as asymmetry or thresholds, which may be relevant for understanding key aspects of selection on many traits. In these cases, additional analyses are needed to test specific hypotheses about fitness functions. In this study we used several approaches to analyze selection on a major life-history trait—flowering time—in the annual plant Brassica rapa subjected to experimentally abbreviated and lengthened growing seasons. We used a model that incorporated a tradeoff between the time allocated to growth versus the time allocated to reproduction in order to predict fitness function shape. The model predicted that optimal flowering time shifts to earlier and later dates as the growing season contracts and expands. It also showed the flowering time fitness function to be asymmetrical: reproductive output increases modestly between the earliest and the optimal flowering date, but then falls sharply with later dates, truncating in a ‘tail of zeros’. Our experimental results strongly supported selection for early flowering in short season and selection for late flowering in long season conditions. We also found support for the predicted asymmetry of the flowering time fitness function, including a ‘tail of zeros’ at later flowering dates. The form of the fitness function revealed here has implications for interpreting estimates of selection on flowering time in natural populations and for refining predictions on evolutionary response to climate change. More generally, this study illustrates the value of diverse statistical approaches to understanding mechanisms of natural selection.  相似文献

The time course of sebum secretion in the guinea-pig (Cavia porcellus) was determined by intradermal injection of [1-14C]acetate followed by daily collection of the skin surface lipids at the injection site. The skin surface lipids reached a peak of radioactivity at 5-6 days, indicating that this is the time which elapses between the synthesis of sebum and the surface excretion of the sebaceous lipids. Of the three major skin surface lipid components, the sterol esters (25%) and the wax diesters (25%) showed similar peaks of radioactivity after labelling, but the glycerol ether diesters (30%) showed no radioactivity at any time, suggesting that this lipid is not produced in the skin.  相似文献

Feature-based attention (FBA) enhances the representation of image characteristics throughout the visual field, a mechanism that is particularly useful when searching for a specific stimulus feature. Even though most theories of visual search implicitly or explicitly assume that FBA is under top-down control, we argue that the role of top-down processing in FBA may be limited. Our review of the literature indicates that all behavioural and neuro-imaging studies investigating FBA suffer from the shortcoming that they cannot rule out an effect of priming. The mere attending to a feature enhances the mandatory processing of that feature across the visual field, an effect that is likely to occur in an automatic, bottom-up way. Studies that have investigated the feasibility of FBA by means of cueing paradigms suggest that the role of top-down processing in FBA is limited (e.g. prepare for red). Instead, the actual processing of the stimulus is needed to cause the mandatory tuning of responses throughout the visual field. We conclude that it is likely that all FBA effects reported previously are the result of bottom-up priming.  相似文献

In stem cell biology, there is a growing need for advanced technologies that may help to unravel the molecular mechanisms of self-renewal and differentiation. Proteomics, the comprehensive analysis of proteins, is such an emerging technique. To facilitate interactions between specialists in proteomics and stem cell biology,a new initiative has been undertaken, supported by the Human Proteome Organization (HUPO) and the International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR). Since photosystem II (PS II) performs the demanding function of water oxidation using light energy, it is susceptible to photoinactivation during photosynthesis. The time course of photoinactivation of PS II yields useful information about the process. Depending on how PS II function is assayed, however, the time course seems to differ. Here, we revisit this problem by using two additional assays: (1) the quantum yield of oxygen evolution in limiting, continuous light and (2) the flash-induced cumulative delivery of PS II electrons to the oxidized primary donor (P700(+)) in PS I measured as a 'P700 kinetics area'. The P700 kinetics area is based on the fact that the two photosystems function in series: when P700 is completely photo-oxidized by a flash added to continuous far-red light, electrons delivered from PS II to PS I by the flash tend to re-reduce P700(+) transiently to an extent depending on the PS II functionality, while the far-red light photo-oxidizes P700 back to the steady-state concentration. The quantum yield of oxygen evolution in limiting, continuous light indeed decreased in a way that deviated from a single-negative exponential. However, measurement of the quantum yield of oxygen in limiting light may be complicated by changes in mitochondrial respiration between darkness and limiting light. Similarly, an assay based on chlorophyll fluorescence may be complicated by the varying depth in leaf tissue from which the signal is detected after progressive photoinactivation of PS II. On the other hand, the P700 kinetics area appears to be a reasonable assay, which is a measure of functional PS II in the whole leaf tissue and independent of changes in mitochondrial respiration. The P700 kinetics area decreased in a single-negative exponential fashion during progressive photoinactivation of PS II in a number of plant species, at least at functional PS II contents ≥6?% of the initial value, in agreement with the conclusion of Sarvikas et al. (Photosynth Res 103:7-17, 2010). That is, the single-negative-exponential time course does not provide evidence for photoprotection of functional PS II complexes by photoinactivated, connected neighbours.  相似文献
