The longer lactation period required in organic piglet producing herds reduces the potential number of produced litters per sow per year compared with that of conventional production. Induction and use of lactational estrus may be a way to increase the productivity in organic production. However, if lactational estrus is to be beneficial under practical husbandry conditions, it is crucial that the majority of sows are successfully mated within a few days to make batch farrowing procedures possible. The objective of this study was to investigate the occurrence and timing of lactational estrus in an organic outdoor system based on ad libitum feeding, individual housing until Day 35 in lactation, followed by grouping and introduction of a boar and weaning of piglets after 8 wk. Five groups with four sows ((Danish Yorkshire × Danish Landrace) × Danish Duroc) in each were observed, and rank was determined by a food competition test. All sows showed lactational estrus, and 84% of these sows showed estrus within 1 wk, on average 43.5 d and 7.3 d after farrowing and boar introduction, respectively. The number of days from boar introduction to estrus increased significantly with increasing feed competition rank (the lowest number being the top rank position). Eighty-four percent of all sows were diagnosed pregnant 5 wk after estrus. Behavioral observations revealed that the average total number of copulations per estrus sow was 2.3 with a range of 0 to 5 copulations. The findings of the current study indicate that it is possible to combine lactational estrus and batch farrowing procedures to increase the number of weaned piglets per year per sow in organic piglet production based on 8 wk of lactation or more. 相似文献

Evidence is growing that an individual's propensity to takerisks in the presence of a predator is correlated to behaviorsthat can affect individual fitness. We examined whether risk-takingbehavior predicts aggression, surface activity levels, and matingsuccess in male fiddler crabs, Uca mjoebergi. Risk-taking behaviorwas highly consistent among individuals, remained stable overtime, and was unrelated to male size. We found that males thattook greater risks in the presence of a potential predator alsobehaved more aggressively when searching for a new territory.In addition, bold males exhibited higher surface activity levelsand spent more time courting females compared with their shycounterparts. Although risk-taking behavior was independentof other sexually selected traits, it accurately predicted malemating success in U. mjoebergi. We suggest nonsexually selectedtraits, such as risk taking, may represent important behavioralpredictors of success in other species. 相似文献

Accounts in the literature of precopulatory mate-guarding in gammaridean amphipods are that males use one of two strategies for mating: either they mate-guard by carrying or attending their mates until they are ready to molt and be fertilized, or they do not guard, instead searching benthically or swarming pelagically at the time that females are ready to molt. Mate-guarding by carrying has been documented for species of the superfamilies Gammaroidea, Talitroidea, and Hadzioidea. Mate-guarding by attending has been found in the more sedentary Corophioidea and Caprellidea. Non-mate-guarders that search pelagically are species of Ampeliscoidea, Lysianassoidea, Phoxocephaloidea, Oedicerotoidea, and Pontoporeioidea. Non-mate-guarders that mate-search benthically are species of Eusiroidea, Crangonyctoidea, and Haustorioidea. Mate-guarding and non-mate-guarding males develop different secondary sex characters at maturity. Mate-guarding males have enhancements for fighting and signalling. These alterations are more elaborate in males that attend their mates than in males that carry their mates. Non-mate-guarders that search pelagically develop enhancements for swimming and sensing. Non-mate-guarders that remain benthic exhibit little change at maturity. Most mate-guarding males develop their secondary sexual characters over several molts and mate over more than one instar. Pelagic mate-searchers develop their secondary sexual characters at the last molt and mating is confined to the last instar. Females of most mate-guarding species are iteroparous, while fewer than half of non-mate-guarding species are so. It is hypothesized that mate-guarding arose more than once in the evolutionary history of amphipod Crustacea. 相似文献

Summary This study examined how assortative mating (without selection) based on linear combinations of two traits could be used to change genetic parameters so as to increase efficiency of selection. The efficiency of the Smith-Hazel index for improvement of multiple traits is a function of phenotypic and genetic variances and covariances, and of the relative economic values of the traits involved. Assortative mating is known to change genetic variances and covariances. Recursive formulae were derived to obtain these variances and covariances after t generations of assortative mating on linear combinations (mating rules) of phenotypic values for two traits, with a given correlation between mates. Selection efficiency after t generations of assortative mating without selection was expressed as a function of random mating genetic parameters, economic values, the mating rule, and the correlation between mates. Selection efficiency was maximized with respect to the coefficients in the mating rule. Because the objective function was nonlinear, a computer routine was used for maximizing it. Two cases were considered. When random mating heritabilities for the two traits were h X2=0.25 and h Y2=0.50, the genetic correlation r XY=-0.60, and the economic values were a X=3 and a Y=1, continued assortative mating based on the optimal mating rule for 31 generations (with a correlation of 0.80 between mates) increased selection efficiency by 29%. Heritabilities changed to 0.38 and 0.66, respectively, and the genetic correlation became – 0.79. When h X2=0.60, h Y2=0.60, r XY=– 0.20, a 1=1 and a 2=1, 36 generations of continued assortative mating with the optimal mating rule increased the efficiency of selection by 17%, heritabilities became h X2= h Y2=0.71, and the genetic correlation changed to 0.25. Most studies in alpaca reproductive biology have been focused on female physiology. Only recent research is being conducted in order to increase the knowledge on males. Semen characteristics during breeding periods will contribute to understanding the poor fertility rates in alpaca. Ten adult male alpacas were distributed randomly into two groups and submitted alternatively to two regimens of semen collection of 12 days duration (day 1, initial day of semen collection). Semen samples were collected using an artificial vagina and a receptive, non-pregnant female. With regimen 1, males were maintained with females except for the days of sexual rest (6 and 7). Semen was collected on days 1, 5, 8 and 12. With regimen 2, males were exposed to females for daily semen collection only, before and after sexual rest. Mating duration, color and volume of ejaculates, spermatozoa concentration and morphology were evaluated. No statistical differences for the variables were found between regimens that were used for semen collection. With respect to influence of day, however, the total numbers of spermatozoa ejaculated on days 1 and 5 of semen collection were statistically different (p < 0.05). Azoospermic samples increased on days 5 and 12 of semen collection. Partial recovery in spermatozoa concentration and number of spermatozoa ejaculated were observed after sexual rest. Although normal spermatozoa percentage was less on day 1 (p < 0.05) as compared with values found in the following ejaculates (days 5 and 12), the total number of normal spermatozoa was greater. These results support the conclusion that when male alpaca have a daily ejaculation during five consecutive days, they might copulate without having enough spermatozoa for fertilization towards the end of the mating period. 相似文献

Summary The intact male nymph cricket, Gryllus bimaculatus DeGeer, was found to show mating-like behavior, that is, courtship-like behavior (CSLB) and copulation-like behavior (CPLB), in the 7th and 8th (last) instars. The 8th instar nymph exhibited less CSLB and CPLB than the adult but much more than the 7th instar nymph. The movement patterns of CSLB and CPLB were essentially the same as those of adults except for motor acts requiring the use of the genitalia. CSLB was short and often ceased spontaneously before it switched to CPLB. CPLB also ended earlier than in adults. The occurrence of CSLB and CPLB was almost zero the few days around ecdysis. The nymph was very sensitive to disturbance, so that he often stopped courtship for more than 30 min after stimulation. CSLB was similarly induced in the male nymph (8th instar) by pairing with a female adult, male adult, female nymph (8th) and male nymph (8th). The female nymph (8th) was observed to mount not only the male adult but also the male nymph (8th). A fixed time sexual refractoriness forming a basis of cyclical mating activity was not present after CPLB in the nymph. It appeared in association with the emergence of spermatophore protrusion behavior around day 3 after the imaginal molt. In fledglings, there were some transitions during the sexual maturation process, such as failures in hook hanging, spermatophore extrusion, and spermatophore transfer to the female. The decerebration experiments on nymphs and fresh adults agreed with behavioral observations. These results suggest that the development of mating behavior in the male cricket is a process of enhancement of basic motor patterns but not a process of addition of new movements by changes in pattern generation circuits in the central nervous system.Abbreviations

Daily urinary estrogen excretion in six singly housed adult female cottontopped tamarins was measured by radioimmunoassay.
Each female was paired with a male for 1 hr every day, during which behavioral observations were conducted on the pair from
behind a oneway glass screen. During each observation period the duration or frequency of occurrence of various behaviors
was recorded. In this paper, the daily variations of (1) total frequency of male mounting, (2) total frequency of male mounting
with thrusting, and (3) latency to first male mount are presented in relation to the measured pattern of female estrogen excretion.
The results reveal a high degree of behavioral variation between pairs, although a relationship between rhythmic changes in
sexual activity and female estrogen excretion in individual pairs is apparent. Mating occurs throughout the female cycle and
also during at least the first 2–3 weeks of pregnancy. A gestation period of 170–172 days is estimated in respect of one female,
in agreement with a previous observation of one gestation of at least 166 days. The high frequency and intensity of mating
recorded in this controlledintroduction study give support to the proposition that mating is important in pairbonding in this
monogamous species. It is concluded that under the experimental procedure followed, mating behavior did not reliably reflect

This paper explores the effect that a dependent rhesus macaque infant ( Macaca mulatta) has on the timing of its mother's resumption of mating. Toward this end, behavioral data from the rhesus populations at Tughlaqabad, India, and Cayo Santiago, Puerto Rico, are compared. Specifically, the intervals between parturition and subsequent resumption of mating for individual parous females are examined in order to shed light on the relative importance of environmental and internal factors (such as lactational infertility) in the control of rhesus mating behvior. At both study sites it was found that the later a given female gave birth during a birth season the shorter was her parturition-mating interval and the younger was her infant when she resumed mating activity. It is suggested that this finding is the result of an interaction of environmental and internal factors; both act in concert to determine how soon after parturition a particular rhesus female will resume mating activity. 相似文献

Paced, but not nonpaced, mating behavior is reported to induce a conditioned place preference (CPP) in female rats. Contrary to these previous findings, Experiment 1 showed that female rats that received 15 intromissions from a single male rat during each of five conditioning sessions exhibited a CPP for the compartment associated with mating when the intromissions were delivered via a paced or nonpaced paradigm. Experiment 2 demonstrated that nonpaced mating induced a CPP when a single male delivered the 15 intromissions but not when the male was replaced following ejaculation and a new male allowed to complete the requisite number of intromissions. These findings invite reevaluation of the reinforcing aspects of mating behavior in female rats. 相似文献

Synopsis The evolutionary stability of simultaneous hermaphroditism depends in part on the existence of constraints on the potential for male mating success. In the seabasses (Serranidae), several species of simultaneous hermaphrodites divide each day's clutch of eggs into parcels that are spawned sequentially and alternately with a partner. This behavior is thought to be one source of constraint on male mating success. A possible related source is the pattern of egg production. A study was therefore performed on the chalk bass, Serranus tortugarum, to examine this pattern. The results indicate that eggs are readied for spawning gradually over the course of the daily spawning period. The pattern of egg production acts jointly with spawning behavior in constraining male mating success. This pattern may be a pre-existing state to which the mating system has been adjusted, or it may have co-evolved with the mating system. 相似文献

We report the isolation of a cDNA clone encoding a neuropeptide precursor named preproGFAD from the central nervous system (CNS) of the snail Helix lucorum. Analysis of the expression of this gene shows that it is neurospecific and expressed in several groups of CNS neurons. Most notable is the expression of preproGFAD gene in the right mesocerebrum, where the neurons controlling mating behavior are located. The expression in this particular region is observed in adult animals but not in juvenile ones. The preprohormone is 108 amino acids long and contains a hydrophobic leader peptide and eight Lys-Arg recognition sites for endoproteolysis. The post-translational processing of the prohormone may lead to the generation of seven tetrapeptides, Gly-Phe-Ala-Asp-COOH (GFAD). This peptide has the same sequence as two previously isolated peptides from a related snail, Achatina fulica. The first of them (achatin-I) contains D-Phe; the second (achatin-II) is its L-Phe-containing stereoisomer. Injection of synthetic D-GFAD in nanomolar concentrations into intact animals caused an increase of the heartbeat rate and opening of the genital atrium. In preparations containing CNS with intact innervation of reproductive organs, bath application of D-GFAD caused extensive movements of the penis but not of other reproductive organs. Intracellular activation of individual neurons expressing the preproGFAD gene also elicited penis movements. D-GFAD also suppressed activity of neurons modulating feeding behavior. Our data therefore indicate that the preproGFAD gene encodes the precursor of a neuropeptide that participates in the regulation of male mating behavior. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Great-tailed grackles ( Quiscalus mexicanus) are sexually dimorphic,dichromatic, colonially nesting blackbirds. In this study, males
pursued three basic types of conditional mating strategies,each of which employed a different set of mating tactics. Territorialmales defended one or more trees in which several females nested.They achieved reproductive success by siring the offspringof their social mates and through extrapair fertilization.Resident males lived in the colony but did not defend territoriesor have social mates. Transient males passed through the colony,
staying no more than a few days, and probably visited more thanone colony. Residents appeared to queue for access to territories,but transients did not. Residents and transients gained allpaternity through extrapair fertilizations and provided noparental care. Territorial males sired the majority of offspring,but residents and transients also sired small numbers of nestlings.
Territorial males were larger and had longer tails than nonterritorialmales. The number of social mates was related to body size,and males that sired nestlings were heavier and had longertails than males with no genetic reproductive success. Malesthat gained paternity through extrapair fertilization wereheavier and had longer tails than males that did not. The matingsystem of great-tailed grackles can best be categorized as

Summary Repeatability, a concept derived from quantitative genetics theory, is a statistic that describes the degree to which variation within individuals contributes to total variation in a population. Its usual application has been to set an upper limit on heritability but it may also be useful for studies of stereotypy of behavior. The repeatability of the production of male mating signals gives information both about whether males differ sufficiently for selection to act and whether the differences could be appreciably heritable. Measures of the repeatability of female mating preferences will provide data that can describe the preference functions used in mathematical models of the evolution of sexually selected traits, as well as putting an upper bound on the heritability of preferences. A survey of the few measures in the literature shows that the repeatability of male signal production varies substantially (range 0.21–0.85) and does not necessarily reflect heritability. The repeatabilities of female preferences have not been published previously: for the response to conspecific pheromones by female flour beetles ( Tribolium castaneum), my best estimate is zero. Measuring the repeatability of other traits such as parental care and foraging behavior may also lead to insights about selection on and the evolution of these traits. 相似文献

The role of phototactic behavior of gametes was tested experimentally in the slightly anisogamous marine green alga Monostroma angicava Kjellman, and the effect of phototaxis on mating efficiency was discovered. Both male and female gametes showed positive
phototaxis in response to a white light source. In contrast, they did not respond to a red light source. Their swimming velocity
did not differ between these two illuminating light sources. It was, therefore, suggested that the search ability of the gamete
itself might not vary between phototactic and non-phototactic conditions. The number of zygotes formed during the mating process
may be expressed as the product of the number of encounters between male and female gametes and the fraction of encounters
that result in sexual fusion. In this study, with high densities of male and female gametes mixed in test tubes, almost all
minor (fewer in number) gametes fused sexually within 10 min. After dilution of the gamete suspensions by half, mating efficiency
in test tubes illuminated by white light from above was higher than that in dark controls. This suggests that male and female
gametes gathered at the water surface through their positive phototaxis, thus increasing the rate of encounters. Mating efficiency
also decreased if the test tubes were illuminated from above by white light and also shaken. Since negative phototaxis is
clearly shown in planozygotes, we suggest that positive phototaxis of male and female gametes in M. angicava is an adaptive trait for increasing the rate of gametic encounters rather than for the dispersal of zygotes as previously
reported for zoospores of some marine algae.

Abstract. Laboratory experiments were carried out to determine the role and characteristics of male scent scales (androconia), located in patches (stigmata) on the forewings of Thymelicus lineola (Ochsenheimer) (Lepidoptera: Hesperiidae). In behavioural tests, there were 30—40% fewer matings of virgin females by males with the stigmata removed or where females had their antennal sensilla covered with nail polish, when compared to sham-treated controls. These reductions occurred despite a large increase in male courtship activity. No physical contact was observed between male wings and female antennae during mating. A scanning electron microscope study of male wings and female antennae showed that: (1) lysis zones form over time on the androconia and pieces (osmo-phores) distal to these zones break off; (2) while few of these zones are present at emergence they are numerous in-day-old males; (3) during a single episode of courtship and mating approximately two-thirds of the available osmophores break off, yet the commonly observed courtship between males does not appear to result in osmophore release; and (4) osmophores were never observed on the female antennae. Electroantennogram recordings (EAGs) indicated that: (1) female antennae responded strongly to odours from male forewings but not from other parts of either males or females; (2) female antennae responded more strongly to young field-collected males than to newly-emerged or old, field-collected males; (3) female antennal response to male forewings was reduced if the androconia were scraped off, and was eliminated if the stigmata were removed; (4) male antennae gave weak EAG responses to both male and female forewings. We conclude that males release pheromone via the breakage of osmophores during courtship. We propose that the frequently observed refusals by females of courting males are at least partially dependent on the quantity or quality of male pheromone released, which are in turn correlated with the male's age and mating status. 相似文献

We report the findings of a phylogenetic comparative analysisexamining patterns and frequency of occurrence of same-sex courtshipand mounting behavior in birds. Our analysis has shown associationsbetween same-sex sexual behavior and both mating system anddegree of precociousness at hatching. The patterns of expressionand frequency of occurrence of same-sex sexual behavior differedmarkedly for males and females. Patterns of same-sex sexualexpression reflected the competitive sexes that actively solicitsexual interactions in heterosexual encounters. Malemale(MM) sexual behavior occurred across all mating systems, butMM mounting was significantly more prevalent in those specieswith facultative polygamy. The frequency of MM sexual behaviorincreased with degree of polygamy. Femalefemale (FF)sexual behavior (especially courtship) occurred most frequentlyin socially monogamous species and rarely occurred in speciesthat display obligate polygamy (predominantly polygynous species).Both expression and frequency of FF sexual behavior was stronglyrelated to the precocial state of development at hatching. FFsexual behavior is more likely to occur in species in whichmonogamy occurs together with the production of precocial offspring;that is, in monogamous species that are exceptions to the morecommon altricial mode of development. We suggest that requirementof biparental care in monogamous species may influence the greaterexpression of FF sexual behavior and longer term associations.Both spatial and behavioral dispersion of females and engagementin uniparental care may be important in explaining the lowerincidence of FF sexual behavior in polygynous species. Socialcontexts where males congregate at communal leks or displayareas may influence the greater expression and frequency ofMM sexual behavior in polygynous species. 相似文献

What was the precultural human mating system? This paper uses primate cross-species comparisons to arrive at a plausible answer which challenges many current theories. The results of this investigation suggest that (1) our precultural ancestors resided in multimale, multifemale communities; (2) the male-female consortships of our ancestors were genetically programmed to last for a short period, i.e., a few months or less; and, most importantly, (3) the precultural human mating system was a form of «selective promiscuity.» Also, it is suggested that our precultural mating system is a continuing fundamental tendency within us that is being suppressed and modified by culture. 相似文献

Summary Mating systems in two pairs of old-growth uncut and adjacent shelterwood stands of Douglas-fir ( Pseudotsuga menziesii var. menziesii) were compared by estimating the proportions of viable progenies due to outcrossing (t) with both single-locus and multilocus techniques. Single-locus population estimates ( s), ranging from 0.41 to 1.16, were significantly ( P<0.05) heterogeneous among loci in three of four stands; mean single-locus estimates for shelterwoods were not significantly different from those for uncut stands. Multilocus population estimates ( m) ranged from 0.94 to 1.00; again, estimates for shelterwoods were not significantly different from those for uncut stands. Multilocus estimates were slightly higher than mean single-locus estimates for uncut stands but were nearly equivalent for shelterwoods, suggesting that related matings other than selfs may be associated with uncut stands, but not shelterwoods. Individual-tree outcrossing rates ( m
i), estimated for six trees in each shelterwood, ranged from 0.90 to 1.10 and were significantly heterogeneous among trees at one of the two shelterwoods.
