A new dicranophorid rotifer, Encentrum (Parencentrum) walterkostei n.sp., is described from an oligotrophic alpine lake. The species was abundant in the psammolittoral of the Unterer Schwarzhornsee, 2543 m above sea level. The main distinguishing taxonomic features of the new species are long, swordshaped toes and only four vitellary nuclei. Its known occurrence in the sandy substrate of only one lake suggests a stenobiontic nature of this apparently oligothermic new species. Taxonomic problems associated with the Encentrum/Dicranophorus group are briefly discussed.  相似文献

This study presents the first phylogenetic analysis of Dicranophoridae (Rotifera: Monogononta), a species rich rotifer family of about 230 species currently recognized. It is based on a maximum parsimony analysis including 77 selected ingroup and three outgroup taxa and a total of 59 phylogenetically informative morphological characters. Character coding is based on personal investigation of material collected by the authors and an extensive survey of the literature. Apart from covering general body organization, character coding primarily relies on scanning electron microscopic preparations of the mastax jaw elements. Our study suggests monophyly of Dicranophoridae with a clade of Dicranophorus and Dorria as the sister taxon of all other dicranophorid species. Monophyly of Encentrum , the most species rich genus within Dicranophoridae, cannot be demonstrated. Within Dicranophoridae our study identifies the monophyletic taxa Caudosubbasifenestrata, Intramalleata, Praeuncinata and Proventriculata, each based on unambiguous character transformations evolved in their stem lineages. However, resolution within Praeuncinata and Proventriculata is very limited. Although some terminal clades within Praeuncinata and Proventriculata are recognized, basal splits remain obscure. Probably, other characters such as DNA sequence data are needed to further our understanding of phylogenetic relationships within these poorly resolved taxa.  相似文献

Evidence is given that the colourless flagellate Oxyrrhis marina is a natural source of tryptophan in the diet of the rotifer Encentrum linnhei, which inhabits coastal rockpools in western Scotland. The rotifer feeds on this flagellate in addition to the photosynthetic alga Brachiomonas submarina. This study also shows that tryptophan excreted by one alga can be taken up by another and made available to Encentrum, a process which allows the rotifer to grow on combinations of algae which, individually, are nutritionally deficient.  相似文献

Many rotifer species live in close association with plants or other animals. Most of these associations are of a commensal or synoecious nature, some rotifer species having lost the ability to live independently. Few rotifers are true parasites, actually harming their hosts.The Seisonidae, Monogononta and Bdelloidea include epizoic and parasitic species. The most widely known are probably the parasites of colonial and filamentous algae (e.g. Volvox, Vaucheria). However, rotifers are also found on a wide range of invertebrates: colonial, sessile Protozoa; Porifera; Rotifera; Annelida; Bryozoa; Echinodermata; Mollusca, especially on the shells and egg masses of aquatic gastropods; Crustacea, including the lower forms (e.g. Daphnia, Asellus, Gammarus) and in the gill chambers of Astacus and Chasmagnathus; the aquatic larvae of insects. There appear to be few records of epizoic or parasitic rotifers among vertebrates, apart from Encentrum kozminskii on carp, Limnias ceratophylli on the Amazonian crocodile, Melanosuchus niger, and an unidentified Bdelloid apparently living as a pathogenic rotifer in Man.  相似文献

The evolution of rotifer feeding/ nutritional studies is discussed together with their relevance to ecological observations. Aseptic conditions and initially synxenic cultures are regarded as a basis for nutritional work. The marine rotifer Encentrum linnhei requires the amino acid dl-tryptophan as a supplement to the food-alga Brachiomonas submarina. Observations on feeding rotifers in natural water samples, together with the morphology of their feeding mechanisms, show Encentrum to be an omnivore; a natural source of tryptophan is suggested. Vitamin B12 and thiamine requirements of Encentrum and Brachionus plicatilis are examined and evidence shown for the quantitative control of the former vitamin by the rotifer's food algae. Axenic cultivation of rotifers is discussed and restricted growth of Brachionus reported under such conditions.  相似文献

Changes in rotifer soil communities along a primary succession chronosequence was studied on brown coal post mining areas near Sokolov, NW part of the Czech Republic. The chronosequence of unreclaimed plots was 2, 11, 14, 20, 43 years old. The rotifers were extracted from soil samples using a modification of the Baermann funnel method with combined light and temperature gradients. In total, 34 taxa of soil rotifers were identified throughout the study. The most common species were Encentrum arvicola, Adineta vaga, A. steineri, Habrotrocha rosa, H. elegans, H. filum, Macrotrachela quadricornifera and M. nana. Rotifer abundance varied from 4 ± 2 · 103 to 516 ± 488 · 103 individuals m–2. Species number per sample increased with age of the plot (r = 0.45, P = 0.003). The most important environmental variables which significantly affected rotifer community were wood cover, sodium concentration and age of the plot. Pioneer plant species occupied 2 and 11 year old plots, 14–20 year old plots were covered by Salix caprea shrubs and a forest formed by Betula pendula and Populus tremuloides developed on the 43 year old plot. Some species were ubiquitous and present throughout the chronosequence (Macrotrachela quadricornifera). Among the pioneer species were Encentrum incisum, Habrotrocha rosa and Macrotrachela papillosa, 14–20 years old plots were preferred by Adineta vaga, E. arvicola, H. filum and M. nana, while the oldest plot was dominated by Adineta steineri and Encentrum mucronatum. Five small ponds on Cape Herschel, Ellesmere Island, N.W.T. (latitude 78° 37 N; 74° 42 W) were investigated, and their rotifer fauna discussed. Although the number of individuals is very low, the rotifer assemblage is remarkably rich (33 species), especially considering the harsh environmental conditions, and the short ice-free period of only six weeks. The shallow ponds are all alkaline, and the rotifer species are either cosmopolitan, or very rare. It is often assumed that the use of a two-stage chemostat yields algal food with a well-defined nutritional composition that can maintain herbivores in a steady state of growth. In this study I investigated two bacteriafree culture techniques, continuous flow chemostats and batch cultures, to determine whether the biochemical composition of the rotifer Encentrum linnhei differed in the two cultures. Changes in the biochemical composition and calorific content of the algal food were also examined. In the rotifer reaction vessel only the lipid content of the algal food increased significantly with dilution rates, while significant decreases in protein and carbohydrates were detected at increasing algal densities. A different pattern was observed in the response of the unused algal cells to variables such as dilution, algal input and algal densities in the sump of the rotifer chemostat. In the chemostat the biochemical composition of the rotifers varied as expected with dilution rates, algal input and food availability but significant differences were found in the biochemical composition of the animals growing in the reaction vessel and those collected from the sump. In contrast, the biochemical content of batch-grown E. linnhei varied with time in a way that depended upon food availability and also on the biochemical state of the algal food. However, at the end of the exponential phase of growth, when maximum densities had been achieved, batch-grown rotifers were more biochemically nutritious than chemostat-grown animals in their steady-state phase.  相似文献

One-hundred five rotifer species were identified from a sandy, plains river in Kansas, USA (the Ninnescah river). Of those rotifers identified, eighty occurred only in the interstitial sand, fifty-six in only the flow as plankton, and thirty-one from both habitats. Most species can be characterized as being more commonly found in littoral habitats, and not the interstitial or plankton. Lecane inermis (Bryce, 1892) had the highest density in the hygropsammon interstitial with an average 401 ind. 10 cm−3 at 1–3 cm depth in September 1993. New records for the US include Encentrum wiszniewski Wulfert (1939), E. longidens Donner (1943) ant E. (Parencentrum) longipes Wulfert (1960). A small form of Lecane levistyla Olofsson (1917) is further examined and discussed.  相似文献

Rotifers were sampled at monthly intervals for a year at four monitoring stations in Rapel Reservoir (a hydroelectric impoundment) in Central Chile (34°02S; 71°35W). Fifteen species were identified, but only Keratella cochlearis was consistently found at each station, it usually was the most abundant (> 50% of total rotifers). Marked differences were found among sites; stations I and 2, those nearest to the dam, showed greatest rotifer densities in spring and autumn. Station 4, that nearest to the inflowing rivers, had its highest rotifer abundance in summer. Station 8 had the highest mean density but the least marked seasonal changes in rotifer numbers.The impoundment water dynamics and the relative locations within the lake (distance from the dam or from the rivers) are suggested as determinants for different rotifer assemblages and, probably, for most other planktonic organisms.  相似文献

In the eutrophic Lake Võrtsjärv (Central Estonia, area 270 km2, mean depth 2.8 m) rotifers form ca. 90% of total abundance and 80% of biomass in winter zooplankton community. The winter rotifer assemblage was dominated by Polyarthra dolichoptera, both in abundance and in biomass. Synchaeta verrucosa and Keratella quadrata were the sub-dominants. Thus, winter rotifer community had low diversity and high dominance of a few species. This pattern probably refers to the period of extreme environmental conditions where the rotifer assemblage is composed of few well-adapted species, and the low diversity here was not indicating instability of community structure, but the scarcity of suitable niches. These community structure indices indicate that the winter rotifer assemblage of L. Võrtsjärv was very similar to autumn assemblage, but very different from the spring one. In winter, small raptors were the most important functional group. The second place is occupied by larger raptors. Marginal role of fine particle sedimentators, absence of suckers and high proportion of large raptors were contrasting features of the winter trophic structure in comparison with the other seasons. Changes have taken place in the winter rotifer assemblage in L. Võrtsjärv in 1990–2007. Against the background of diminishing rotifer abundance, the dominant species has become even more prevalent, and the diversity of the winter rotifer assemblage has decreased. Each rotifer is described in detail, and several are accompanied by illustrations and mensuration data. Geographic distribution and individual habitats of the rotifers are also discussed. An effect of age of quarry lakes on rotifer abundance and species composition has been evaluated. Rotifers occurred in all lakes under study. They were even found in the youngest (2 years of age) one, Rogonica 4, but both rotifer density and species richness were low there. Rotifer communities of much higher density and species diversity were noted in lakes only 4–6 years older. Lakes of over 30 years of age were strongly differentiated in rotifer numbers and species structure. In general, age of quarry lakes has an impact on rotifer communities only at the very beginning of the process of colonization. Several years later other factors become more important, e.g., depth or trophic state of the lakes.  相似文献

Two new rotifer species, Lecane (Monostyla) aliger n.sp. and Proales pugio n.sp. are described from the Bahama Islands, Florida and California, and their autecology outlined. Some other rare rotifers are discussed which also prefer subtropical conditions. They are: Epiphanes clavulata, Epiphanes brachionus spinosus, Lecane crepida and Proalides tentaculatus tentaculatus. A new species of planktonic rotifer, Keratella sinensis n.sp.is described from Lake Yaoquan, Heilongjiang, P.R. China. Itprobably also occurs in the Republic of Korea and Japan. The newmorphospecies is characterised by an unusually smooth lorica, andstrongly reduced lateral anterior spines.
