The patterns of use of marine and freshwater habitats by the tropical anguillid eels Anguilla marmorata and A. bicolor pacifica were examined by analysing the otolith strontium (Sr) and calcium (Ca) concentrations of yellow (immature) and silver (mature) stage eels collected in Vietnamese waters. In A. marmorata, the change in the Sr:Ca ratios outside the high Sr:Ca core was generally divided into three patterns: (1) typical catadromous life history pattern; (2) constant residence in brackish water; and (3) habitat shifting between sea and brackish waters with no freshwater life. In A. bicolor pacifica, no eels had a general life history as freshwater residents. The eels were also divided into three patterns: (1) constant residence in sea water; (2) constantly living in brackish water; and (3) habitat shifting from brackish to sea water with no freshwater residence. The mean Sr:Ca ratio value after recruitment to coastal waters ranged from 1.73 to 5.67 × 10?3 (mean 3.2 × 10?3) in A. marmorata and from 2.53 to 6.32 × 10?3 (mean 4.3 × 10?3) in A. bicolor pacifica. The wide range of otolith Sr:Ca ratios in both species indicated that the habitat use of these tropical eels was facultative among fresh, brackish, and marine waters during their growth phases after recruitment to coastal areas. Tropical eel species may have the same behavioural plasticity as temperate anguillid species regarding whether to enter freshwater or to remain in estuarine and marine environments.  相似文献

To evaluate trends in the osmoregulatory behavior of neotropical, palaemonid shrimps, we investigated osmotic and ionic regulatory patterns in five species of Palaemon or Macrobrachium. The species' life histories depend on saline water to differing degrees, their habitats ranging from the marine/intertidal (P. northropi), through estuaries (P. pandaliformis) to coastal, freshwater streams (M. olfersii, M. potiuna) and inland, continental river systems (M. brasiliense). Hemolymph osmolality, chloride, sodium and magnesium concentrations were measured in shrimps exposed to experimental media ranging from fresh water (<0.5 per thousand ) to concentrated seawater (42 per thousand ) for up to 10 days. The marine and estuarine Palaemon species exhibit well-developed hyper/hypo-osmotic, sodium and chloride regulatory capabilities in mid-range salinities, tending to hyperconform in low salinities. The freshwater Macrobrachium species show variable hyperosmotic, sodium and chloride regulatory capacities, tending to hypoconform or unable to survive at higher salinities. All species hyper-regulate magnesium in fresh water, but hyporegulate strongly in saline media. Palaemonids from the saline habitats show the strongest osmoregulatory capabilities, and fresh water may have been gradually invaded by ancestral species with similar regulatory capacity. However, this regulatory plasticity has been lost to varying degrees in extant freshwater species.  相似文献

The freshwater eels of the genus Anguilla, which are catadromous, migrate between freshwater growth habitats and offshore spawning areas. A number of recent studies, however, found examples of the temperate species Anguilla anguilla, Anguilla rostrata, Anguilla japonica, Anguilla australis and Anguilla dieffenbachii that have never migrated into fresh water, spending their entire life history in the ocean. Furthermore, those studies found an intermediate type between marine and freshwater residents, which appear to frequently move between different environments during their growth phase. The discovery of marine and brackish-water residents Anguilla spp. suggests that they do not all have to be catadromous, and it calls into question the generalized classification of diadromous fishes. There has been little available information, however, concerning migration in tropical Anguilla spp. Anguilla marmorata, shows three fluctuation patterns: (1) continuous residence in fresh water, (2) continuous residence in brackish water and (3) residence in fresh water after recruitment, while returning to brackish water. Such migratory patterns were found in other tropical species, Anguilla bicolor bicolor and Anguilla bicolor pacifica. In A. b. bicolor collected in a coastal lagoon of Indonesia, two further patterns of habitat use were found: (1) constantly living in either brackish water or sea water with no freshwater life and (2) habitat shift from fresh water to brackish water or sea water. The wide range of environmental habitat use indicates that migratory behaviour of tropical Anguilla spp. is facultative among fresh, brackish and marine waters during their growth phases after recruitment to the coastal areas. Further, the migratory behaviours of tropical Anguilla spp. appear to differ in each habitat in response to inter and intra-specific competition. The results suggest that tropical Anguilla spp. have a flexible pattern of migration, with an ability to adapt to various habitats and salinities. The ability of anguillids to reside in environments of various salinities would be a common feature between tropical and temperate species without a latitudinal cline. Thus, the migration of Anguilla spp. into fresh water is clearly not an obligatory behaviour. This evidence of geographical variability among Anguilla spp. suggests that habitat use is determined by environmental conditions in each site.  相似文献

Summary Twenty species of Fungi imperfecti, including strains from freshwater, estuarine and marine habitats in the environs of the middle and lower Neretve River, Yugoslavia, were collected, purified and identified. Strains of nine species from fresh, brackish, and sea water were grown on various NaCl concentrations. These fungi exhibited a wide amplitude of salt tolerance. In general, the strains from fresh water grew best at or were able to tolerate the lower NaCl concentrations. The sea-water strains grew best at and could tolerate the higher NaCl concentrations. Brackish-water strains were found to be more like strains isolated from fresh water than from sea water. Brackish-water strains were able to grow well in zero or low concentrations of NaCl, but they could not do as well at the higher NaCl concentrations. The results of the laboratory experiments with NaCl concentrations support the findings in nature. All twenty species of these fungi were tested for their ability to decompose lignin, utilize phosphate and degrade lecithin. Five species gave a positive reaction on gallic acid medium; five species were able to utilize lecithin; and seven species were active in utilizing tribasic calcium phosphate.  相似文献

Summary Larvae of the marine mosquito,Aëdes togoi Theobald, tolerate environmental salinities ranging from fresh water to 300% sea water. When they were transferred from fresh water to sea water, sodium concentration in the haemolymph increased for the first 2 days and decreased to the seawater-adapted level within 4 days. When transferred from sea water to fresh water, the sodium concentration decreased markedly for the first 2 days and attained the freshwater adapted level after 4 days. When the larvae in sea water were ligated near the anus, they died within 3 days, showing an increased sodium level in the haemolymph. The larvae ligated at the neck lost considerable body weight and died within 4 days. When the anal portion, a terminal portion of the hindgut, was catheterized, the larvae maintained in sea water showed an increase in haemolymph sodium. The anal portion epithelium of the larvae adapted to 100 and 150% sea water demonstrated a strong positive reaction to the histochemical assay for chloride ions, whereas the reaction was negative or weakly positive in freshwater adapted larvae. In the larvae with the anal papillae ligated, a slight increase in haemolymph sodium occurred while in sea water. The anal papillae were weakly positive to chloride ions. Unlike salt-water mosquito larvae of the other species, in which the rectum is considered to be involved in hyperosmotic urine production and the anal papillae appear to be the extrarenal organ, the anal portion inA. togoi larvae seems to play an important role in excretion of excess ions when placed in hyperosmotic media.  相似文献

The life histories of the pond smelt Hypomesus nipponensis collected from Japanese fresh waters and brackish (sea) waters were studied by examining the strontium (Sr) and calcium (Ca) concentrations in their otoliths. The Sr:Ca ratios in the otoliths changed with the salinity of the habitat. The pond smelt living in a freshwater environment showed consistently low Sr:Ca ratios throughout the otolith, averaging 1·2–1·3 × 10−3. These samples were identified as a standard freshwater type. In contrast, fish collected from the intertidal zone showed higher otolith Sr:Ca ratios than those in the standard freshwater type, and the ratios fluctuated along the growth phase. In addition to the two representative life‐history types of H. nipponensis , i. e . freshwater and anadromous life‐history types, other pond smelts were found to have an estuarine resident life history‐type with no freshwater phase, indicating that the pond smelt has a flexible migration strategy with a high degree of behavioural plasticity and an ability to utilize the full range of salinity in its life history.  相似文献

The Holocene evolution of eight South African coastal lakes and lagoons is examined and related to changes in fish composition over that period. Historical and current connectivity with riverine and marine environments are the primary determinants of present‐day fish assemblages in these systems. A small and remarkably consistent group of relict estuarine species have persisted in these coastal lakes and lagoons. The loss or reduction of connectivity with the sea has impacted on the diversity of marine fishes in all eight study systems, with no marine fishes occurring in those water bodies where connectivity has been completely broken (e.g. Sibaya, Groenvlei). In systems that have retained tenuous linkages with the sea (e.g., Verlorenvlei, Wilderness lakes), elements of the marine fish assemblage have persisted, especially the presence of facultative catadromous species. Freshwater fish diversity in coastal lakes and lagoons is a function of historical and present biogeography and salinity. From a freshwater biogeography perspective, the inflowing rivers of the four temperate systems reviewed here contain three or fewer native freshwater fishes, while the subtropical lakes that are fed by river systems contain up to 40 freshwater fish species. Thus, the significantly higher fish species diversity in subtropical versus temperate coastal lakes and lagoons comes as no surprise. Fish species diversity has been increased further in some systems (e.g., Groenvlei) by alien fish introductions. However, the impacts of fish introductions and translocations have not been studied in the coastal lakes and lagoons of South Africa. In these closed systems, it is probable that predation impacts on small estuarine fishes are significant. The recent alien fish introductions is an example of the growing threats to these systems during the Anthropocene, a period when human activities have had significant negative impacts and show potential to match the changes recorded during the entire Holocene.  相似文献

Temporal patterns in otolith Sr:Ca and Ba:Ca ratio values of American eels Anguilla rostrata from two sites in western Newfoundland gave insight into the use of freshwater and saline habitats. Mean Sr:Ca and Ba:Ca values at the core zone did not differ between sites, indicative of a common oceanic origin. At the otolith edge, representing continental life, both Sr:Ca and Ba:Ca values varied between sites consistent with ambient element:Ca ratio values and salinity, with typically higher Sr:Ca and lower Ba:Ca values in saline than in fresh waters. Most eels (73%) from Muddy Hole, an estuarine site, were evaluated as estuarine residents while most (70%) eels from Castors River, a freshwater site, were evaluated as freshwater residents, with the remaining eels from each site evaluated as inter-habitat migrants. An otolith element:Ca critical value appropriate for distinguishing between fresh and saline water residence is fundamental for estimating the proportion of eel residence in freshwater and their subsequent classification into habitat residence groups. Such classification is moderately robust to the critical value selected. For inter-habitat migrants, moderate otolith Sr:Ca values between the elver check and otolith edge suggestive of estuarine residence may coincide with Ba:Ca values suggestive of freshwater residence. No general critical value for separating fresh and estuarine habitats was found for otolith Ba:Ca. Otolith Ba:Ca temporal patterns may assist the use of Sr:Ca in the evaluation of historical habitat residence and inter-habitat movement but the use of otolith Ba:Ca values should be applied cautiously for American eels and perhaps of other estuarine/freshwater migratory fishes.  相似文献

Species richness in freshwater bony fishes depends on two main processes: the transition into and the diversification within freshwater habitats. In contrast to bony fishes, only few cartilaginous fishes, mostly stingrays (Myliobatoidei), were able to colonize fresh water. Respective transition processes have been mainly assessed from a physiological and morphological perspective, indicating that the freshwater lifestyle is strongly limited by the ability to perform osmoregulatory adaptations. However, the transition history and the effect of physiological constraints on the diversification in stingrays remain poorly understood. Herein, we estimated the geographic pathways of freshwater colonization and inferred the mode of habitat transitions. Further, we assessed habitat‐related speciation rates in a time‐calibrated phylogenetic framework to understand factors driving the transition of stingrays into and the diversification within fresh water. Using South American and Southeast Asian freshwater taxa as model organisms, we found one independent freshwater colonization event by stingrays in South America and at least three in Southeast Asia. We revealed that vicariant processes most likely caused freshwater transition during the time of major marine incursions. The habitat transition rates indicate that brackish water species switch preferably back into marine than forth into freshwater habitats. Moreover, our results showed significantly lower diversification rates in brackish water lineages, whereas freshwater and marine lineages exhibit similar rates. Thus, brackish water habitats may have functioned as evolutionary bottlenecks for the colonization of fresh water by stingrays, probably because of the higher variability of environmental conditions in brackish water.  相似文献

Recent investigations of water balance in sea snakes demonstrated that amphibious sea kraits (Laticauda spp.) dehydrate in seawater and require fresh water to restore deficits in body water. Here, we report similar findings for Pelamis platurus, a viviparous, pelagic, entirely marine species of hydrophiine ("true") sea snake. We sampled snakes at Golfo de Papagayo, Guanacaste, Costa Rica and demonstrated they do not drink seawater but fresh water at variable deficits of body water incurred by dehydration. The threshold dehydration at which snakes first drink fresh water is -18.3 ± 1.1 % (mean ± SE) loss of body mass, which is roughly twice the magnitude of mass deficit at which sea kraits drink fresh water. Compared to sea kraits, Pelamis drink relatively larger volumes of water and make up a larger percentage of the dehydration deficit. Some dehydrated Pelamis also were shown to drink brackish water up to 50% seawater, but most drank at lower brackish values and 20% of the snakes tested did not drink at all. Like sea kraits, Pelamis dehydrate when kept in seawater in the laboratory. Moreover, some individuals drank fresh water immediately following capture, providing preliminary evidence that Pelamis dehydrate at sea. Thus, this widely distributed pelagic species remains subject to dehydration in marine environments where it retains a capacity to sense and to drink fresh water. In comparison with sea kraits, however, Pelamis represents a more advanced stage in the evolutionary transition to a fully marine life and appears to be less dependent on fresh water.  相似文献

An unusual saltwater population of the freshwater crocodilian, Crocodylus johnstoni, was studied in the estuary of the Limmen Bight River in Australia's Northern Territory and compared with populations in permanently freshwater habitats. Crocodiles in the river were found across a large salinity gradient, from fresh water to a salinity of 24 mg · ml-1, more than twice the body fluid concentration. Plasma osmolarity, concentrations of plasma Na+, Cl-, and K+, and exchangeable Na+ pools were all remarkably constant across the salinity spectrum and were not substantially higher or more variable than those in crocodiles from permanently freshwater habitats. Body fluid volume did not vary; condition factor and hydration status of crocodiles were not correlated with salinity and were not different from those of crocodiles from permanently fresh water. C. johnstoni clearly has considerable powers of osmoregulation in waters of low to medium salinity. Whether this osmoregulatory competence extends to continuously hyperosmotic environments is not known, but distributional data suggest that C. johnstoni in hyperosmotic conditions may require periodic access to hypoosmotic water. The study demonstrates a physiological capacity for colonisation of at least some estuarine waters by this normally stenohaline freshwater crocodilian.Abbreviations ANOCOVA analysis of covariance - BW body weight - CF condition factor - ExNa exchangeable sodium - HF hydration factor - SVL snout-vent length - TBW total body water - THO tritiated water  相似文献

The compartmentalization of body fluids was measured in three species of ducks that differ in saline tolerance. Half of the birds of each species drank freshwater, while the other half drank saline (300 mM NaCl). Among ducks that drank freshwater, total body water (TBW) was similar among all species, but Barrow's goldeneyes (Bucephala islandica), the most marine species, had larger extracellular fluid volume (ECFV) than freshwater mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) or estuarine canvasbacks (Aythya valisineria). When acclimated to saline, only goldeneyes shifted extracellular water and Na+ into the intracellular compartment. ECFV was correlated with plasma aldosterone concentration in goldeneyes, but not in canvasbacks (aldosterone was not measured in mallards). Data summarized from the literature showed that TBW does not differ among terrestrial, freshwater, or marine species, but marine species have a larger part of their TBW in the extracellular compartment. Saline induced movement of extracellular water and Na+ into the cells only in goldeneyes. ECFV and redistribution of extracellular water and Na+ into the cells may be important components in saline tolerance of marine birds.  相似文献

Pacific salmon are noted for their lengthy foraging migrations and for their precise homing ability. Extensive sampling has documented the general migratory patterns of the major populations, but many basic aspects of their marine ecology are still poorly understood. Their life history pattern has been interpreted as an adaptation to exploit the higher productivity of the marine environment over that in fresh water. The adaptive significance of homing is implied by the specializations of populations for their natal habitat and the competitive superiority of locally adapted populations over transplants from other rivers. However, the establishment of new populations by strays and the levels of gene flow between natural populations have only recently received much attention. Research on salmon migrations has also focused on the mechanisms that guide homing at sea and in fresh water. While salmon have highly developed sensory systems, the ways in which inputs are integrated to guide migration through diverse and complex habitats are still being investigated.  相似文献

Recent studies have shown that sea kraits (Laticauda spp.)--amphibious sea snakes--dehydrate without a source of fresh water, drink only fresh water or very dilute brackish water, and have a spatial distribution of abundance that correlates with freshwater sites in Taiwan. The spatial distribution correlates with sites where there is a source of fresh water in addition to local precipitation. Here we report six years of longitudinal data on the abundance of sea kraits related to precipitation at sites where these snakes are normally abundant in the coastal waters of Lanyu (Orchid Island), Taiwan. The number of observed sea kraits varies from year-to-year and correlates positively with previous 6-mo cumulative rainfall, which serves as an inverse index of drought. Grouped data for snake counts indicate that mean abundance in wet years is nearly 3-fold greater than in dry years, and this difference is significant. These data corroborate previous findings and suggest that freshwater dependence influences the abundance or activity of sea kraits on both spatial and temporal scales. The increasing evidence for freshwater dependence in these and other marine species have important implications for the possible impact of climate change on sea snake distributions.  相似文献

Speciation problems are reviewed in the context of biogeography of fresh-water algae. Currently accepted species concept in phycology is based on morphological characters, and according to this concept, most freshwater algal species are considered cosmopolitan. This implies whether they have a highly efficient means of dispersal or their morphological characters are very static through a long evolutionary time. Recent studies of reproductive isolation show that some biological species of fresh-water algae are not so static or may not have such a high power of dispersal means, though some are indeed very static in morphological characters. The life cycle of most freshwater algae is composed of a vegetative cycle of growth and reproduction and a sexual cycle of gametic fusion and meiosis in the zygote, which forms a dormant spore-like structure. Since any freshwater habitat is ephemeral in terms of evolutionary time scale, each species has a capacity of forming germlings from a dormant cell in order to recycle its life history. The genome of freshwater algae, therefore, contains various coadapted gene systems, at least two, for the vegetative and for the sexual cycle. Homothallism and heterothallism are two contrasting mating systems that represent two opposing ways of life to harmonize antagonism between the vegetative stage of growth and reproduction and the sexual and dormant stage. Geographic and ecological distribution, polyploidy, and sex determination are discussed in conjunction with sexual and postzygotic isolating mechanisms.  相似文献

This study employed a combination of otolith microchemistry to indicate the recent habitat use, and plasma concentrations of the hormone insulin‐like growth factor 1 (IGF1) as an index of recent growth rate, to demonstrate differences in growth and habitat use by Dolly Varden Salvelinus malma occupying both freshwater and estuarine habitats in south‐west Alaska. Extensive sampling in all habitats revealed that fish had higher IGF1 levels in estuarine compared to lake habitats throughout the summer, and that the growth rates in different habitats within the estuary varied seasonally. In addition, otolith microchemistry indicated differentiation in estuarine habitat use among individual S. malma throughout summer months. Although growth in the estuary was higher than in fresh water in nearly all sites and months, the benefits and use of the estuarine habitats varied on finer spatial scales. Therefore, this study further illustrates the diverse life histories of S. malma and indicates an evaluation of the benefits of marine waters needs to include sub‐estuary scale habitat use.  相似文献

Individual migration behaviour during the juvenile and adult life phase of the anadromous twaite shad Alosa fallax in the Elbe estuary was examined using otolith Sr:Ca and Ba:Ca profiles. Between hatching and the end of the first year of life, juveniles showed two migration patterns. Pattern one exhibited a single downstream migration from fresh water to the sea with no return into fresh water. In contrast, pattern two showed a first migration into the sea, then a return into fresh water and, finally, a second downstream migration into marine water. This first report of migration plasticity for A. fallax points to different exposure times to estuarine threats depending on the migration strategy. In adults, high Sr:Ca and low Ba:Ca in the majority of individuals confirmed prior reports of a primarily marine habitat use. Patterns reflecting spawning migrations were rarely observed on otoliths, possibly due to the short duration of visits to fresh water.  相似文献

The transition from marine to freshwater habitats is one of the major steps in the evolution of life. In the decapod crustaceans, four groups have colonized fresh water at different geological times since the Triassic, the freshwater shrimps, freshwater crayfish, freshwater crabs and freshwater anomurans. Some families have even colonized terrestrial habitats via the freshwater route or directly via the sea shore. Since none of these taxa has ever reinvaded its environment of origin the Decapoda appear particularly suitable to investigate life‐history adaptations to fresh water. Evolutionary comparison of marine, freshwater and terrestrial decapods suggests that the reduction of egg number, abbreviation of larval development, extension of brood care and lecithotrophy of the first posthatching life stages are key adaptations to fresh water. Marine decapods usually have high numbers of small eggs and develop through a prolonged planktonic larval cycle, whereas the production of small numbers of large eggs, direct development and extended brood care until the juvenile stage is the rule in freshwater crayfish, primary freshwater crabs and aeglid anomurans. The amphidromous freshwater shrimp and freshwater crab species and all terrestrial decapods that invaded land via the sea shore have retained ocean‐type planktonic development. Abbreviation of larval development and extension of brood care are interpreted as adaptations to the particularly strong variations of hydrodynamic parameters, physico‐chemical factors and phytoplankton availability in freshwater habitats. These life‐history changes increase fitness of the offspring and are obviously favoured by natural selection, explaining their multiple origins in fresh water. There is no evidence for their early evolution in the marine ancestors of the extant freshwater groups and a preadaptive role for the conquest of fresh water. The costs of the shift from relative r‐ to K‐strategy in freshwater decapods are traded‐off against fecundity, future reproduction and growth of females and perhaps against size of species but not against longevity of species. Direct development and extension of brood care is associated with the reduction of dispersal and gene flow among populations, which may explain the high degree of speciation and endemism in directly developing freshwater decapods. Direct development and extended brood care also favour the evolution of social systems, which in freshwater decapods range from simple subsocial organization to eusociality. Hermaphroditism and parthenogenesis, which have evolved in some terrestrial crayfish burrowers and invasive open water crayfish, respectively, may enable populations to adapt to restrictive or new environments by spatio‐temporal alteration of their socio‐ecological characteristics. Under conditions of rapid habitat loss, environmental pollution and global warming, the reduced dispersal ability of direct developers may turn into a severe disadvantage, posing a higher threat of extinction to freshwater crayfish, primary freshwater crabs, aeglids and landlocked freshwater shrimps as compared to amphidromous freshwater shrimps and secondary freshwater crabs.  相似文献

Dehydration and procurement of water are key problems for vertebrates that have secondarily invaded marine environments. Sea snakes and other marine reptiles are thought to remain in water balance without consuming freshwater, owing to the ability of extrarenal salt glands to excrete excess salts obtained either from prey or from drinking seawater directly. Contrary to this long-standing dogma, we report that three species of sea snake actually dehydrate in marine environments. We investigated dehydration and drinking behaviors in three species of amphibious sea kraits (Laticauda spp.) representing a range of habits from semiterrestrial to very highly marine. Snakes that we dehydrated either in air or in seawater refused to drink seawater but drank freshwater or very dilute brackish water (10%-30% seawater) to remain in water balance. We further show that Laticauda spp. can dehydrate severely in the wild and are far more abundant at sites where there are sources of freshwater. A more global examination of all sea snakes demonstrates that species richness correlates positively with mean annual precipitation within the Indo-West Pacific tropical region. The dependence of Laticauda spp. on freshwater might explain the characteristically patchy distributions of these reptiles and is relevant to understanding patterns of extinctions and possible future responses to changes in precipitation related to global warming. In particular, metapopulation dynamics of the Laticauda group of sea snakes are expected to change in relation to projected reductions of tropical dry-season precipitation.  相似文献
